Caleb sipped his whiskey, making polite chit chat with whatever hoi polloi he was supposed to be entertaining-though in all honesty he could care less what this inane woman had to say. He was sure the new Manhattan Ghost Club would be worth it, and that meant investors.
Finally he was blessedly free and immediately made his way to the bar. "Another one of these please and if you could make it a triple I'd be much obliged."
Only the bar staff were huddled around a phone, and god Caleb hoped he wasn't being ignored for yet another sports games-he'd have to have a heavy hand in hiring staff here apparently if this lax work ethic was allowed. "Excuse me?"
A bartender looked up, rushing over with an apologetic look. "Sorry sir, we were distracted by the news out West. What can I get you?"
A chill went up Caleb's neck at that-"What's happening out West?"
"Major earthquake," the bartender replied. "Hit downtown LA like a Mack truck."
Caleb ran at that, finding a quiet corner, frantically dialling a number on his phone, feet tapping a mile a minute as he urged the person on the other line to pick up.
"Dad?"
Caleb breathed a sigh of relief. "Willie, thank god. Where are you?"
"I just left Alex's place, on my way home. WHy? Not like you to worry."
"There was an earthquake," Caleb replied.
"It's LA, there's always earthquakes," Willie replied non-chalantly.
"They say it wiped out downtown," Caleb stated. "I know you're not close to there but there's always aftershocks and looters and-"
"Dad. Chill, I'm headed straight home, I'll be okay, I promise." Caleb could hear Willie's smile in his reply and he wished that could reassure him. Cursing his being on the other side of the country and not home where he longed to be.
"Please let me know when you get home safe," Caleb urged. "I'll worry until I hear from you again."
"Are you sure you're okay?" Willie asked. "You're kind of freaking me out."
"I'm sorry, sorry," Caleb apologized, trying to regulate his breathing. "It's just... If anything happened, and I'm not there..."
Willie was silent for a moment at that. He was used to Caleb travelling for work, to being independent-but never when there was a natural disaster happening. Not when Caleb couldn't get home in the space of a blink to help him, to hold him. Offer comfort through a rare hug and a pack of Oreos.
No wonder he was worried.
"I'll be safe," Willie vowed. "I can stay on the line if you want?"
"Don't drain your battery on my account, save it for if there's an emergency," Caleb urged. "Just... call when you're home, and I'll get there as soon as I can okay?"
"Okay," Willie replied. "Love you dad."
"Yeah, you too."
No, that wasn't good enough. Caleb wasn't usually demonstrative, his love was understood-no need to state it. But maybe that needed to change. "Willie?"
"Yeah dad?"
"Love you."
Willie sniffled down the line. "You too. Call when I'm home."
Caleb nodded even as the line went dead, clutching the phone until it rang once more-but he's sure his breathing won't return to normal until he's back in LA, holding his son in his arms once more.
And wonders which one of these rich assholes had a private jet he can commandeer.

Oh dear...
Alex is attending one of the most prestigious magic academies in the country, on the orders of his parents of course. Even though Laiz Fier Academy reviles even the name of the only type of magic he's ever been good at. His parents swore he'd find another specialty here, and he'd let himself believe them, like the idiot he is. He's scraping by in classes. Barely. At least he's managed to make a couple of friends and figure out how to sneak into the library stacks to find books that will actually help him hone his skills.
However, Alex realizes now there's a reason why it's not recommended to do your first summoning alone. Because, while he does manage to summon a demon, it doesn't exactly end up in the silvery urn he'd laid in the center of the pentagram.
So now he has a talking, demonic Furby to hide. One that, despite its too-wide eyes and disconcertingly smooth voice, Alex thinks he might be developing feelings for.
