Most people would say that freshman year is the worst year of High School but Julie disagreed with that sentiment.
Until she didn’t.
See, for the most part, freshman year of high school was pretty great. She was accepted into the music program, where she got to spend a good portion of her day playing the piano and singing, which made school more bearable. Even though she was a straight-A student, Julie was very bored in most of her classes that weren’t music related.
She also had a best friend, Carrie, who along with their other four more distant friends, completed a whole lunch table in the cafeteria, where many couldn’t say the same. Most people liked her and she always had someone to talk to in her general classes, and a ton of people she would socialize with within her music classes. She even had a great lab partner, Flynn, who she might even start considering to be her friend as well.
Julie was enjoying the high school experience for the most part. Don’t get her wrong, she already had that graduation countdown on her phone, but she wasn’t miserable.
She couldn’t pinpoint the exact time that everything started to change. She knew it was late winter, almost spring (which in southern California didn’t really make a difference), but she couldn’t list a date or anything.
The first time she really noticed it though was towards the end of February.
“I think we should totally change our go-to-place to there. They had so many more toppings,” Kayla, one of Julie and Carrie’s friends, told the group that was all gathered around Carrie’s locker. Julie was walking towards the group, the last to arrive, but she could still hear them all a few steps away.
“Plus the cashier was super cute,” Chanel, another one of their friends, added.
“What are we talking about?” Julie asked, finally joining the group. She had her hands wrapped around the straps of her backpack, taking some of the load off of her shoulders. She bounced forward on the front of her toes.
“Oh, just the frozen yogurt place we went to last night. It was so much better than the usual place,” Kayla explained.
“Yeah, it was a blast,” Chanel told her. “You really missed out.”
Julie was confused. She had never gotten an invite. Maybe she missed it? She must have because Chanel told her that she missed out so they must have thought that she wasn’t able to go, right? They always all hung out.
Before she racked her brain for more ideas of what the hell was going on, the bell rang, signaling that it was time for their next class.
Kayla, Chanel, and their two other friends headed toward their different classes, leaving just Julie and Carrie.
Julie opened her mouth to ask Carrie about the frozen yogurt thing, just to figure out what was going on, but before she could get a word out, Carrie smiled at her and closed her locker.
“Well, I have to get to geometry. Talk to you later.” And with that, took off down the hallway towards the science and math wing of the school.
Julie was even more confused. She walked in a fog to her next class, biology, with her head in her phone, searching to see if she had missed the invitation. She checked every way that her friends could have contacted her; texts, calls, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, hell she even checked her email.
There wasn’t anything.

Julie Molina, 3rd generation legacy and senior at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women.
Luke Patterson, prodigy of the Blackthorne Institue for Boys.
The two first met last year during their spring final exam. He flirted. She used him. They both lied. But Luke cheated and Julie hasn’t forgiven it, she definitely hasn’t forgotten, and she can’t quite shake the blow to her confidence the encounter left.
But what was supposed to be a one off, turns out to be a lot more when Blackthorne joins Gallagher Academy for the year and suddenly Luke is everywhere. He’s cocky, charming, and drives her crazy but the look in his eyes when she aces a test or hands him is ass in gym sends butterflies fluttering through her stomach.
Which is stupid because Julie has more important things to worry about. Like passing her classes and getting through her final year. Like why her mothers been acting so weird, stress lining her eyes. Like why exactly the Blackthorne boys are here this year and what exactly happened to Headmaster Covington. Like what she’s going to do after graduation… if they even get there, because the mystery of Blackthorne is far more dangerous than they could have ever guessed.
