Thinking about Julie's habit of doodling.
She loves doodling; she loves decorating plain objects to give them a personal touch. But sometimes, she gets carried away, drawing on any surface that crosses her path. And she just finishes the last stroke when she realizes what she was drawing on: One of Luke's guitar picks. So Julie panics. Deep down, she knows it's not a big deal. Luke's got plenty of guitar picks, and it's partly his fault for letting it lie around in her room. (How did it even get there?) But she knows how possessive he can be about anything related to his music/instruments, and she shouldn't have done it without his permission.
So she profusely apologizes to him. While she speaks, Luke's scarily silent. He just stares at the guitar pick that now sports a ghost with a guitar that seems to be dancing with a purple butterfly.
Julie interprets his silence as anger and cautiously takes a step back. But Luke follows her until she's backed against a wall. He doesn't say a word, his gaze is oddly intense, and Julie gulps. And then, all of a sudden, Luke starts digging through all his pockets, producing five guitar picks. He literally begs her to put little doodles on them too.
And Julie is just ... 😵🫠🥹
(Luke's brain just short-circuited after seeing the picture and he had no idea what he was doing.)
Later Luke gets her an entire box, and he never loses a guitar pick ever again in his entire afterlife. Even when they're unusable, he keeps them, hoarding them like a treasure.
(Reggie and Alex joke about it, but they're just lowkey jealous. Until Alex gets an upgrade for drumsticks from Julie, and Reggie's white shirt gets bedazzled with glittery butterflies that he adores. (Alex coughs, "butterflies and glitter", and gets kicked in the shin by Reggie and Luke.))

Just a few thoughts-
Y’know how Caleb says how the Hollywood Ghost Club has everything the boys want?
WRONG.
The Ghost Club doesn’t have Julie-
Also how Luke and Julie hold each other’s faces when they can feel each other- 😭🥹
Um, anyway, happy Juke Jeudi?

just thinking about an au where Julie works for her Tia's housekeeping company. they have contracts with one of the prominent labels in LA
it's a summer job maybe?
but she's getting the hang of dusting, cleaning glass, collecting trash and recycling, restroom maintenance, breakroom scrubbing, the works
when one day, one of the higher ups at the company seeks out her Tia for an unorthodox tasking
They need someone to go to an apartment and clean it up ASAP
Tia selects Julie because she knows she can trust her to work unsupervised as well as she can get the T-E-A later after the workday is over.
Once inside, it's got the musty smell of a place that hasn't been entered in a while and there is a light layer of dust on everything, including a very nice sound system connected to a high-end combination cd/tape/turntable with impressive library of cds, records, and the occasional tapes
Deciding that she doesn't have to work in silence, and whoever lives here won't be back before she's gone. she picks out a record to jam out to while she cleans, then throws open the windows she can and gets to work. She washes the linens, dusts, scrubs the bathroom, dusts, wipes down the kitchen, dusts, and when she finishes with all of that she can vacuum!
As she dusts in the living room, there are guitars on the wall and she can't help but notice 2 are missing
when one record ends, she switches it to something new, excited by the selection whoever lives here has curated
it's honestly hard to pick what's next but then in the CDs, down in the S's, she notices a rare gem from the music world!
They have Sunset Curve's first ever EP
It's a no brainer, she puts the CD into the tray and hits play as she picks up the rag she was using to wipe out the refrigerator. The guitars sound out the beginning of Now or Never and she's leaning inside the fridge, the french doors splayed open as she sings along to the song when a loud THUD startles her out and THERE IS A MAN and she is YELLING, and then he is yelling
and that is how she met Luke Patterson of Sunset Curve, freshly returned from their european summer circuit, as she explains to Flynn later
Once they'd stopped yelling, she had apologized, rushed to turn the music off and explained that she was almost done and to "please, settle in and pretend i'm not here. I will be gone in 10 minutes"
and he had, looking dead on his feet, probably from the time change (also very stunned from hearing a wrecking ball of a voice singing his lyrics from inside his fridge, but she doesn't know that) and then she was gone.
time passes and she keeps working the normal duties from the contracts at the company, only once did she see Sunset Curve and she did an about face and took an alternate route to the task she was doing.
but then Toby gets tendonitis or something and now Tia needs someone to cover the part of the building that features all the studios for the different bands in LA that are signed to the label and it has to be someone trustworthy because they might see or hear music that CANNOT be leaked or the whole cleaning service loses the contract. So trustworthy niece gets picked
Given a schedule each week of what bands will be in and when (ish) she is able to clean unobtrusively for the most part
It's the end of the day and she just needs to gather trash from the rooms that were used that day when she gets a bit thrown off by the set up in SC's studio. Everything is pushed to the edges of the small room and a keyboard is set up front and center.
Looking for where they'd moved the trash can, her eyes keep flicking back to the keyboard and she can't help brushing her fingers over the keys gently before she leaves. Only for someone to be in the doorway, making her jump!
It's luke and he apologizes for startling her but she is in "oh crap oh crap don't bother the clients" mode and so she apologizes and skidaddles out of there
and then and then
Suddenly on the schedule of when bands will be in, there is a request for her to clean SC's room at a specific time during the lunch hour that day. and when she arrives, the rooms is well, not spotless, but cleaner than it should be and there is a note on the keyboard saying to have fun for an hour maybe
and it keeps happening?
julie starts taking luke up on the opportunity to play around on the piano
and then suddenly luke is there but like "don't mind me, keep doing your thing!" and she very much does her own thing but that is grilling him about what is happening annnnnnnnnnnnd
they get closer as time passes
and eventually it becomes helping luke with a song which then becomes working on a new song together
and then excited about the song, luke shares it with the guys and they begin workshopping their instruments into it and Julie happens to hear it happening and thinks that Luke just used her for the music and stole the song they'd been working on for his band
so she stops showing up during that hour, instead working in a room somewhere else where he can't find her
annd she avoids him in the hallways, always turning and going the opposite direction if she sees him or the band
and finally Toby's arm is doing better and can come back to work so she is quick to relent the studio section back to them
Tia notices she doesn't even hum while working anymore and then one day she is cleaning a conference room, and
The door opens behind her. Reggie and Alex walk in. She can't run out, so she just keeps wiping down the windows.
"Did Luke do something wrong?" It could be just his friends trying to help a guy out but there is steel in alex's voice that lets Julie know that they will 100% be on her side if she told them Luke did anything royally stupid and offensive.
"No."
"Oh...okay. Do you think you'd want to write with him again?" the question is unsure. like alex doesn't know if he should even ask it.
Now Julie is mad. "I'm not paid to write songs. I'm paid to clean. I don't have time for this."
"a shame. That was a killer song you two wrote" Reggie hesitantly says.
"yeah. I heard you guys playing it. Hope it does well on your next album" she fails to keep any of her anger out of her voice. and since she doesn't want to get fired for fighting the labels talent, she grabs her supplies and leaves out the secondary door.
and then the guys realize that Julie may have a misunderstanding about what's going on with the song she wrote with Luke
but before luke can fix it, SC has to travel again, this time to Australia and then Canada.
so it's at least 3 weeks before they are back in LA
I don't know how this ends. How does Luke make things right with Julie? Any ideas? Would love to see your thoughts.

I heard you calling
Julie dug her hands into the sand again and again as the light slowly faded from the sky.
It had been a shit day of an even crappier week and she just wanted to hide away from the world for a little while. It was why she’d told her dad she was studying at Flynn’s and then told Flynn she was tired and was going to call it an early night.
It’d taken her nearly an hour to ride her bike out to the beach but it had been worth it to let go of her thoughts in the sound of the waves and ground herself in the sand under her feet.
It’s not like she could hide in the studio.
That had been occupied by three ghost himbos for almost six months now.
Don’t get her wrong, she loved the guys and Flynn and her dad and even Carlos, for the most part, but sometimes a girl just needed to wallow in some self-pity by herself.
Her tears had dried a while ago and she was just staring out at the waves and the retreating sun when she heard the unmistakable sound of a ghost poofing in near her.
She didn’t even turn to look at him as he kicked off his vans and plopped down beside her scattering some sand on her own bare feet.
“Hey.”
Julie sighed and started digging in the sand again. “How’d you find me?” She looked down at the sand she was playing in, in case anyone was watching.
“You called me.”
She turned to Luke with a frown, the thought of anyone thinking she was crazy for talking to air flying right out of her head at his words.
“I did not!” She hissed. “I’ve only talked to my dad and Flynn. I certainly didn’t call the band phone. I was actually trying to be alone for a change.”
He shrank a little at her ire before shaking it off and leaning back on his hands. “I don’t know what to tell you Jules.” He shrugged. “I heard you call.”
She looked at him skeptically, “You heard me in your head, calling your name?” That would be new and weird and she wasn’t sure she wanted that ability, especially if she hadn’t meant to do it.
He leaned forward crossing his legs and bit his lip.
He ducked his head and was quiet for a moment before shaking it and looking back up at her through his lashes, “No, not in my head.”
The sun had nearly set and she could barely see his eyes in the fading light but he looked nervous all of a sudden like the answer was something she wouldn’t like.
As annoyed as she’d immediately been on his intrusion to her pity party she couldn’t help sliding her hand closer to his in the sand until their pinkies touched in a silent peace offering.
He wrapped his pinky around hers with a little tug.
The moment they touched Luke’s eyes cleared of their worry and she felt the tightness that had been pressing on her chest all day ease slightly.
Julie pulled her knees up to her chest and laid her head on them before she whispered. “Explain, please?”
He sighed as he turned to face her a little more directly, careful not to move their hands still touching in the sand. “Ok, I guess heard is the wrong word…”
“Luke,” she sighed and squeezed his pinky. “Just spit it out. Why are you being weird?”
“Cause it is weird Jules.” He reached up to rub the back of his neck with his free hand. “I’ve had this feeling in my chest all day that something was wrong.” He dropped the hand on his neck to press against his chest like he was showing her where it hurt. “I asked the other guys if they felt it and they didn’t and…” He dropped the hand on his chest to lay on top of hers in the sand and fiddled with her rings. “I just knew you were sad or upset or something and I’ve wanted to check on you all day but you’ve told us not to come to the school anymore and then when you didn’t come out to the studio to see us this afternoon I…”
She flipped her hand over slowly and laced their fingers together keeping her head on her knees and her eyes on Luke. He looked up at her as a smile finally started to tug on his lips.
Julie and Luke had always been more in tune with each other than the other guys. She’d thought it had something to do with how they had shared pain about being disconnected from their moms or how they wrote music together like they shared a brain, but maybe it was more than that.
“Ok,” she nodded slightly. “Let’s disregard that you knew I was having a terrible day, we can analyze that later. That still doesn’t explain how you found me.”
He sighed, “I’m not sure explaining how I found you will be less weird. Honestly it was like some wizard shit.”
Julie giggled pressing her mouth to her knee trying to muffle the sound. Her giggles set his off and before long they were both shaking with laughter.
She unfolded herself and laid back on the sand keeping hold of Luke’s hand and he laid down beside her.
“Ok, I still need you to explain the wizard shit even if it is weird.”
“Ok, ok, I said that because you know in Harry Potter, in one of the last movies that part where Ron leaves and then finds his way back to them, back to Hermonie, with the little light in his chest telling him where to go?”
Julie frowned trying to follow his ramble. “You followed a light in your chest?”
“I mean kinda.” He groaned and rubbed his face. “I’d been feeling so off all day and when you didn’t come see us after school I started to get even more worried and then dinner time passed and we still hadn’t seen you. I needed to know you were ok.” He dropped the hand that had been on his head to his side and looked at her with so much concern. “I needed to find you so I just… did.”
He just did. It made a weird sort of sense. “So you just, what, closed your eyes and thought about me and here you are?”
He nodded, his eyes wide, “Yeah, exactly.”
They looked at each other a long time as they lay in the sand side by side holding hands. She briefly wondered what she looked like to anyone glancing in her direction.
“I’m sorry I worried you so much today. I’m ok, really.” She squeezed his hand. “I had no idea you knew how bad my day had gotten or I would have come to see you before I left.”
“Julie,” he rolled on his side to face her. “You didn’t know and really…” He dropped his eyes and stared hard at her shoulder. “It’s not your job to make sure I’m ok.”
She squeezed his hand again and he looked up at her with those sad puppy eyes and she melted like she always did. “Ditto.”
He grinned and shook his head. “I couldn’t help it.”
“You could have texted me.” She let go of his hand and rolled onto her side propping her head up on her hand. “You could have texted me.” She bit her lip. “What if I’d been in a bathroom or something when you came looking for me?”
He gaped at her. “I…I…” he started to laugh. “That would have been mortifying!”
“You think?” Julie giggled. “So text first…please.” She laid her hand on his in the sand. “I promise I’ll reply. Especially now that I know…”
Luke nodded, ducking his head. “Just so you know…” He started fiddling with her rings again. “Sometimes I know when you’re extra happy too.”
“Yeah?” She grinned at him and kicked his leg. “You don’t come find me then do you?”
He shook his head and looked up at her biting his lip. “We’re usually together.”
She laughed, of course they were. Luke wasn’t the only person that made her happy but ever since he fell into her life she couldn’t deny that she had more than friendly feelings for him.
Feelings that made her almost irrationally happy sometimes.
Luke smiled and pressed his hand against his chest. “You’re happy again now.”
“You seem to have that affect on me.” She bit her lip and ducked her head as she felt her cheeks heating up.
“Hey,” Luke tugged on her chin, gently forcing her to look at him. “You make me happy too Jules.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah…” Luke ducked his head and rubbed the back of his neck. It was too dark to know for sure but she thought he might be blushing like she had too. “I don’t know what I’d do without you boss.”
They looked at each other for a long time, neither wanting to say any more than they already had.
It was enough… for now.
Julie took a deep breath and blew it out hard. It was time to head back home, back to reality which luckily included three ghost boys that made amazing music with her and one that she…
“Alright, party’s over,” Julie said pulling herself up from the sand and dusting her jeans off. “It’s gonna take forever for me to bike home.”
Luke stood up with her, keeping her hand in his. It was fully dark now. Anyone would be hard pressed to notice how Julie’s hand might look like it was holding something invisible.
“Mind if I go with you?” He chewed on his lip. “I really don’t like the idea of you being alone in the dark like this all the way home.”
“I’ll have to walk.” She chuckled, “Unless you wanna run beside me?”
He laughed, “I’ll run for a bit and then you can sit on the handlebars and I’ll bike.”
Julie burst out laughing. “That would look crazy!”
“Exactly,” Luke grinned. “Anyone that saw you would think they were nuts.”
She bit her lip and shook her head at him as they headed off the sand toward her bike. There was a stretch of neighborhood they would need to go through where very few people were likely to see them.
“We’ll see.” She winked as she slipped her shoes on after unlocking her bike from the stand.
She glanced over at Luke as they left the beach area. Maybe she would let him bike for a bit. What did it matter if some stranger thought she was crazy, or they were?
She was already feeling pretty reckless… after all…
Julie looked over at Luke again to see him already looking back at her.
She was in love with a ghost.

I’m bad with titles and just wanted to post this finally! Happy Juke Jeudi! 🥳
I really had this just sitting in my Notes app 🤧 There was more to it, but if I kept going I don’t think I’d ever finish…
part two to this.
~
It starts with secret meetings in the castle gardens after dark, with Rose keeping Ray busy while Julie slips out for an “evening walk” on her own as long as she stays within the palace’s boundaries.
Then it’s meetings in town where Julie dresses like the next plain-clothed young woman with a red baseball cap and dark sunglasses obscuring her features as Luke whisks her into the little coffee shop that he works at with Reggie who also keeps an eye out for the royal security or anyone who might get Julie in trouble.
It can only happen while Rose runs her daily errands and the guards are occupied. Ray thinks Julie is with her mother, and neither Molina woman lets him know any different. Rose knows Luke will keep Julie safe and she trusts Julie not to do anything that would put herself in harm’s way.
And it’s perfect until it’s not.
Julie and Rose are out one night to attend a music charity gala—naturally they both are excited to go and Luke gets a selfie of the two of them from Julie just before they head out. It’s the last time he talks to her for the night, until he’s awoken out of his sleep by his phone buzzing incessantly.
The stormy weather made for a turbulent trip and there is a terrible car accident from which the queen doesn’t survive. The Molina family, along with most of the country but specifically the capital city, is absolutely devastated. Queen Rose brought so much life and love into the lives of everyone around her. She ruled the Costa de Estrella with a firm yet caring hand, and her absence is felt throughout the country.
Julie takes it the worst, walking away from the crash with only a few scratches and a broken wrist, but her heart is shattered into a billion painful pieces. She disappears from the public eye, and though Luke had every intention of coming to see her, he hasn’t been able to sneak inside the palace since it happened.
Her physical injuries heal with time, but Julie has felt like she’s been underwater ever since that night. Most nights she calls Luke because she can’t sleep, and she falls asleep listening to him talk or sing or play guitar, even though they both wish they could be together. Her father and Parliament are strangely understanding, allowing her time off her usual duties to grieve.
Until a month later, and the Council has already planned a ball for her to host–her father’s idea–as part of her search for a suitable partner. Julie is immediately against the idea and when she confronts Ray, they have their worst argument yet and she hasn’t spoken to him since.
Julie hasn’t spoken much to anyone besides Carlos and Luke if the few texts they manage to exchange count. (Ever since they announced the ball, the Council has been keeping Julie extra busy with preparations so she hasn’t had much of a chance to breathe, much less check her phone.)
The night of the ball, the door to her bedroom slams open, startling her in her seat in front of her vanity. “Geeze, Flynn!”
Oh, and she talks to Flynn. But Flynn won’t hear of anything differently.
Flynn Taylor is one of Julie’s ladies in waiting but they both have always made faces at that title because Flynn has always been much more than that to Julie. Though Flynn works as her assistant, Julie knows that Flynn has her back more than anyone.
“Sorry, you know I’ve got to make a grand entrance,” Flynn apologized as she rushes over to where Julie is sitting. “But I’ve got very important updates.” She brings her arm out from around her back, placing an elegant white lace mask over Julie’s eyes.
“A mask?”
“Yes, my dear princess Julienna, because I have convinced Victoria to make tonight’s ball a masquerade.” Flynn’s smile as she meets Julie’s gaze in the mirror tells her Flynn is not only excited but also incredibly pleased with herself, but Julie is still confused.
“But… why?” Julie removes the mask from her face to turn and look at her best friend.
“Just trust me on this one, J. I promise it’s worth it. And it matches your absolutely stunning gown.”
“Except I don’t want to look stunning,” Julie says, turning away from the mirror to face her friend. “This whole ball is to look for a partner, Flynn. But I have Luke.” She knows she sounds whiny and maybe ungrateful, but the idea of looking for a partner that her father and the Council deems suitable feels ridiculous, not to mention wrong. There’s no reason to look for someone else when her heart already belongs to Luke who would do just about anything to protect it and her.
Flynn’s smile turns into a sympathetic look before she gives her a small grin. “I promise, it’s all going to work out.” She squeezes her shoulders before offering to help Julie finish getting ready.
By the time Flynn leads her to the ballroom doors to make her grand entrance, anger and sadness are warring within Julie, making her incredibly grumpy and on edge.
This shouldn’t be happening.
Her mother should be here and this shouldn’t be happening. Though if Rose was still here, this would’ve never made it past a mere mention among the Council.
And the thought makes her stomach drop just as the doors open.
Julie plasters on a fake smile as she makes her way over to where her father and Carlos are waiting. Her father says a few words, thanking everyone for coming  and plenty of other things Julie doesn’t really hear. She accepts dances from a few different men, and it isn’t so bad, but all she can think about is how she’d rather be dancing with Luke.
She has to hand it to Flynn though, the masks do add an air of mystery and elegance to the night, though she’s not entirely sure how she’s supposed to tell who exactly she dances with.
Julie finally catches a break between dances when a man walks up to her in a deep, navy blue suit and a matching black mask.
He bows, as is customary when someone below nobility approaches Julie. When he straightens up he takes her hand and brings it to his mouth to press a kiss to her knuckles.
Her immediate response is to give this man a piece of her mind, until he leans toward her, his whisper clear as day over the noise of the rest of the party, “May I have this dance, Princess?”
Julie’s eyes widen as she meets the eyes of the masked stranger in front of her. “Luke?”
Despite the mask covering the top half of his face, Julie would recognize the bright, perfect smile on his face anywhere. “It’s me, boss,” he confirms as she reaches up to cradle both sides of his face.
“How are you here?” she whispers with tears gathering in her eyes.
“Flynn convinced Victoria to make the ball a masquerade. Your dad can’t kick me out if he doesn’t know its me.”
Julie takes a moment to take Luke in. Between the tux, the mask, and…his hair was done??? “Your hair,” she giggles, reaching up to brush her fingers over it.
“Flynn said it would help with the nobody recognizing me thing,” Luke says with a sheepish grin. She definitely owes Flynn for this.
A watery smile spreads across her face. “I missed you so much.” She hadn’t realized until he’s standing right in front of her just how much.
“I missed you too, Jules. You have no idea how much.” He reaches up to wipe away a few tears she hadn’t realized were falling, and ends up cradling her face like it’s the most precious thing he’s ever seen.
Like she’s the most precious thing he’s ever seen.
And suddenly none of it matters: the ball, her deteriorating relationship with her father, or looking for a partner. As long as she has Luke by her side, they’ll figure it out somehow.

ugh. i wish I could make GIFs.
I OBVIOUSLY love the major Juke moments. they're my favourite parts of the show but...
The way Luke IMMEDIATELY and excitedly gives in to Julie's request to see their music *now* in i got the music?
The way Luke bounces up from the chair in finally free after returning from his parents?
The linger before poofing away at her window in finally free?
I know there are more but these are top of mind and I am NOT doing a full rewatch right now to dig them all out (lies she tells herself).
Gosh, these subtle and underrated moments make my heart all melty. fuck i love this show and his character so much.

winter wonderland
For @story-courty and @bex2313 because I can't send snow in the mail. It would melt. And make a big mess. And for @missjoolee and @claire8216 because you don't need me to send you snow, but I'd send you some anyways, if I could.
“Julie,” Luke whines, drawing out the vowels from where he’s sprawled on the couch in the studio, “I know I’m supposed to be the music obsessed one, but I need to eat something. Now.”
The last word is punctuated by a stomach growl she can hear all the way over at the piano, so she decides to take pity on him.
“Fine, Luke, you know where the kitchen is. I’m just going to finish writing out these changes and I’ll be right in,” she can’t help but smile as he practically bounces off the couch and rushes towards the door.
A few minutes later, satisfied that she’s recorded all the changes they’d made to their newest song, Julie closes up the notebook. As she’s about to leave the studio she grabs Luke’s abandoned flannel and pulls it around her shoulders. It had started snowing at some point during their writing session and though the distance between the studio and house are short, it’s below freezing outside and Julie isn’t acclimated to the cold yet.
As she pushes the studio doors open she’s shocked by how much snow has actually accumulated. There’s a good inch or more on the ground already and the flakes are still falling. She takes extra care latching the studio doors so as not to let the heat out.
Just as she’s trying not to get her hopes up for a snow day tomorrow she hears a rustle up by the house, “I said I was coming, Luke, you didn’t have to-,” but her sentence is cut short when she’s struck in the shoulder by a snowball.
Before she can react much more than to breathe out a, “what the-,” she’s pelted by two more snowballs in quick succession. One hits her torso and the other just below her knee, the wet snow soaking her jeans. She looks up just in time to see Luke ducking behind the porch pillar.
“Oh it is on, Patterson,” she yells as she jogs up the path, gathering snow off of the large, flat rocks there as she goes.
She times her throw just right, ducking down a little behind the bushes as Luke tentatively creeps out from behind the pillar. The snowball makes contact with his right shoulder, snow spraying up into his face and sticking in his bangs under his gray beanie.
Julie hardly has time to celebrate though because Luke had spent his time waiting for her to finish up wisely. He has a neat little pile of snowballs stacked up on the porch railing and he barely misses a beat as he throws one her way. She can hear it hit the ground behind her as she ducks, trying to rapidly form as many snowballs as possible, gathering them in her arms as she sneaks further up the path, using the snow covered bushes as cover.
Her uncovered hands are freezing, but she isn’t going to let Luke get away with this sneak attack. She dodges another snowball before a second one just catches her forearm. As she continues towards the porch, she lets a couple more snowballs fly through the air, not caring so much if they hit her target. She’s almost reached the steps and they’ll be on level ground soon enough.
Just as Luke steps behind the pillar again, Julie sees he’s made a fatal error in judgement. His stockpile of snowballs is depleted, and from where he stands on the covered porch, there’s no snow for him to make more. She bites her bottom lip as she ascends the stairs, scooping up more snow as she goes.
“I’ve got you now,” she taunts, packing the snow in her hands a little tighter so it keeps it’s shape, “there’s nowhere to run.”
Julie has reached the top step now, drawing her arm back to let her final snowball fly and claim victory for herself. She turns to the left, ready to let her snowball go and just catches the blur of white as a snowball flies directly towards her. Luke must have had one more in his hand, and he saved it for when she was close enough to ensure a direct hit.
Julie gasps as the wet snow makes contact with her already cold cheek, her eyes going wide in surprise as she lets the snow in her hand drop to the ground with a plop. She might be more upset if she wasn’t met with Luke’s comically shocked face, she’s never seen his eyes so wide or his mouth in such a perfectly round “o” before.
He trips over his words as he rushes towards her, “Oh my god, Jules I am so sorry! So, so sorry!” Luke holds out his hands cautiously towards her, “I didn’t mean to, I swear!”
Julie frowns as she reaches up to brush the water away from her cheek, and then takes pity on poor Luke, still floundering in front of her, and grabs his hands. They’re colder than hers, and she instinctively brings them closer to her body in an attempt to warm them against the now snow-damp flannel.
He’s still gaping a little like a fish when she says, “You’re really going to have to make it up to me, Patterson,” her face relaxing into a smile as she lets a giggle escape.
Luke deflates when he sees her smiling up at him, and he extracts a hand from hers to touch her face, where the offending snowball had left her right cheek a little redder than the left one. Julie’s breath hitches a little at the contact, and she hopes he doesn’t notice or that he’ll believe her when she blames it on the cold.
“Does it hurt?” He asks, concern and something else she can’t quite place, lacing his voice.
“Not really,” she shrugs. She raises her eyes to meet his, suddenly feeling a little emboldened by their close proximity and the quiet atmosphere created by the falling snow illuminated by the porch lights, “Nothing a kiss wouldn’t fix.”
She swears Luke stops breathing as the words leave her mouth, his hand still resting on her cheek stills.
And just as she’s about to regret it, about to tell him she’s just joking, she hears his sharp intake of breath. Then, he’s leaning down towards her, ducking his head to the side and brushing his lips over her frost-bitten cheek and it’s her turn to stop breathing. His lips only linger against her skin for a moment, warm and soft, and if she hadn’t already spent more time than she’d like to admit wondering what they’d feel like against her own she’d sure be wondering now. He pulls away slowly, and she finally remembers how to breathe again.
“Is that better?” he asks, voice barely above a whisper.
And Julie doesn’t know what possesses her to say it, but before she can second guess herself she whispers back, “Actually, that wasn’t the exactly the type of kiss I had in mind.”
She barely hears his breathed, “oh” as she lifts her chin, bringing their faces unfathomably closer, hoping he gets the message.
Thankfully, he does.
The hand still on her face moves to cup her neck, thumb resting just under her ear. She can feel his warm breath ghost over her face as he ducks down once more. Only this time, his lips don’t brush over her cheek.
This time, they make contact with her own.
His lips are somehow warmer and softer than they had been against her cheek, as they press gently against her own. And as she melts into the kiss, her cold hands warming against the fabric of his hoodie as she grips it between them, she thanks her lucky stars that she doesn’t have to wonder what it’s like to kiss Luke Patterson any longer.

The Parents He Deserves
Luke rang the doorbell and pulled his collar away from his neck for the third time since he’d gotten out of the car.
To say he was nervous was an understatement.
Rose opened the door looking ready for a quiet evening in with her husband dressed in baggy sweats rolled down at the waist and up at her ankles, probably Ray’s, and an old band t-shirt. She was holding a glass of red wine and she smiled at him, like she always did, when she saw him standing there.
“Luke! What are you doing here?” She waved him in before he could answer.
“Sorry to bother you guys,” he fiddled with the flowers in his hand he was trying not to crush. “Here,” he said pushing them toward her. “These are for you.”
“Thank you Luke,” she laughed as she sat her wine down on the table by the door and took them from him. She buried her nose in the petals taking a long whiff, “Dahlias, my favorite.”
“Hey Luke,” Ray came around the corner from the kitchen dressed down like his wife in sweats and a plain black tee wiping his hands on a towel and giving him the same easy grin he’d been giving him for years.
He cringed realizing he was probably interrupting their dinner.
“What are you doing here? I thought you and the guys were having a boy’s night, that’s what Julie told us before she headed out with Flynn and Carrie.” He said stopping in front of him and tossing the towel on his shoulder.
That had been the story he told Julie but she was the only one of their friends that thought that’s what he was actually doing tonight.
It’d be a miracle if no one spilled the beans before he got to the real reason he was lying to his girlfriend, but one step at a time.
He bounced on his heels. “I need to talk to the two of you if you have a minute.”
“Ok,” Ray said glancing at Rose who bit back a smile before turning back to him.
“Come on in the living room Luke and tell us how we can help.” she said nodding in that direction.
He nodded in return and followed them down the hall to the family room he’d spent many nights hanging out with Julie and her family watching movies and playing games.
Rose laid the flowers on the coffee table and took a seat on the sofa next to Ray. They both looked up at him as he continued to stand across from them.
He thought he might vibrate out of his skin if he stopped moving.
He just needed to get this out.
“Luke?” Rose was grinning at him again. “You seem to have something important to ask us.”
“He does?” Ray sat up a little straighter and frowned at his wife.
“Ray…” she rolled her eyes. “He’s wearing a shirt with sleeves.”
Luke only peripherally noticed Ray raise his eyebrows at Rose as he started to pace back and forth in front of them pulling at his collar again and giving in to his need to move. This was the first time he truly understood why Alex paced when he was anxious.
Luke had never been more anxious in his life.
“Mijo?” Ray questioned.
He’d had a plan, a speech but he couldn’t recall a word of it now.
“Luke, carino,” Rose called him back from his racing thoughts.
“I’m sorry,” he stopped in front of them and ran a shaky hand through his hair. “I don’t know why I’m so nervous.” Actually he did know. He’d already been by his parent’s house and told them his news and they had not taken it well at all.
He stopped pacing and really looked at Rose and Ray Molina sitting on their sofa, holding hands, calmly waiting for him to tell them why he was here.
He took a deep breath and reminded himself, not for the first time, that they were not Emily and Mitch Patterson.
“I’m planning to ask Julie to marry me and I’d like your blessing.”
Rose screamed and jumped up climbing over the coffee table to pull him into a hug. “Of course mijo!” she leaned back to grin at him. “Of course you have our blessing!” Then she pulled him into an even tighter hug.
Luke was still laughing at Rose’s exuberance when he felt Ray’s hand on his shoulder and turned to look up at the big man. He had tears in his eyes.
“Mijo,” he put his arms around both him and his wife. “We’ve known this day was coming since you followed Julie home from her first day of high school.”
“Yeah?” He chuckled.
It was true that he’d been completely smitten with Julie from the very first day she set foot in Los Fez and his music class. He’d been a little in love with her before she’d even opened her mouth. Captivated by her smile, her eyes and the way she looked around the room like she was assessing who she wanted to work with. Like she wasn’t the new kid but had been there all along. He’d never known anyone with that much confidence with their music, besides himself, before that day.
Then she’d sat down at the piano and he was hers if she’d have him.
“Of course Luke,” Ray smiled down at him, his arms still wrapped around him and Rose. “A blind man could see how much you love our ninita.”
Luke nodded his eyes filling up with tears. He did love her. God he loved her, more than anyone but apparently that wasn’t enough for his parents.
He swallowed the lump in his throat. “You don’t think we’re too young?”
“No mijo.” Rose shook her head as she reached up and wiped the tear that has escaped down his cheek. “I was only a year older than Julie when Ray and I got married.” She grinned at Ray over his head. “The only reason I wasn’t younger was because we’d only known each other a year.”
“Luke,” Ray squeezed his shoulder. “You’re both adults and we will support your decisions.”
He bit his lip and nodded.
They were adults no matter what his mother said. He had a place with the guys and a job. The band was booking more gigs every week and Julie would be graduating early from college in just a few months.
All of them worked so hard to make their dreams come true but none more than Julie. He was so proud of her and she inspired him every day to be a better man.
He had no doubt they’d have a recording contract within the year and he wanted her to be his wife when they made it big. Why couldn’t his parents see that?
“Thank you both.” He took a deep breath trying to calm back down from the anticipation of telling them about the proposal. He was going to propose no matter what they’d said but having their blessing meant the world to him and he knew it would mean the world to Julie.
“Your support means so much.” He looked back and forth between them and smiled. “It always has.”
Rose kissed him on the cheek, making him laugh, before stepping back. “Of course Luke,” she grabbed his hand and pulled him back toward the kitchen. “No matter what happens, you and Julie will always have a place here.”
“Where are you taking me?” he smiled as she kept pulling him out of the room.
She winked, “To eat.”
He looked back at Ray who was just standing back up from retrieving Rose’s flowers she's knocked off the coffee table in her rush to get to him. “I don’t want to disrupt your evening even more than I already have.”
“Nonsense!” Ray waved away his worry. “Stay and catch us up on what’s been going on with you, Reggie and Alex.”
He chuckled. It had been a while since they’d all been over to visit. Julie’s time was already split between school, him, the band and her parents so even she probably didn’t know everything that was going on with the guys right now.
Rose tugged on his hand pulling his attention back to her as they entered the kitchen, “And maybe tell us how you’re planning to propose?”
He bit back a grin as she left him sitting at the kitchen table while she moved around grabbing the food off the counters and Ray pulled out a vase to put the flowers in.
Maybe his parents hadn’t reacted the way he’d hoped they would when he told them he was going to ask Julie to marry him but Ray and Rose had more than made up for their disapproval with their overwhelming support.
Just like they always did.
He hoped on day his parents would see what he saw in his future.
“So…” Ray passed him a bowl full of rice. “Is Alex going to propose to Willie anytime soon?”
“Oh! Double wedding!” Rose exclaimed as she took the bowl from him.
He laughed.
If his own parents never came around he already had the best parents in the world, who would officially be his parents too one day soon… if Julie said yes.
This was inspired by @missjoolee's fic If You Could Only See
