lisbon, jane, houses - and home
I was thinking a while ago about Lisbon and her childhood. I was thinking what it meant to lose her mother at a young age, to live with an abusive father for years, to then lose that father and to have to take care of her brothers for most of her formative years.
I was thinking about how that house must have been for her. We've seen a bit of it in S7E7. I was thinking about its creaking stairs and her room. I was thinking about her being in a music band - whether it was because it was a respite from the whole situation at home, or because she enjoyed it or both. Probably both, she seems to enjoy music, although we've never really heard her as much as humming a song.
And then I thought about her house during her CBI time. How impersonal it seems. My friend @wardrobemoments made a post (here) taking about her apartment and how it really doesn't make sense (which it doesn't.) i think most people know and expect that she's more focused on her work rather her home, so it doesn't really need to make a lot of sense. It's possible it's the layout that the owner or previous renter made (we have no argument proving otherwise. We barely see this apartment). We barely see the apartment she lives in during those two years, or the apartment she lives in when being employed by the FBI. I wonder how it might've felt for her to keep moving.
And then I thought about Jane. About Jane who did not have a stable home all of his childhood and who lived in foster care for a while. His first home is full of posters with himself and his accomplishments - a constant reminder that he is worthy, maybe. And then it's stripped bare after the death of his wife and child. What might he have felt? That they're mocking him now, that he was too focused on his greatness that he neglected his family? I'm purely speculating here. Maybe he just hated himself so much he couldn't stand to look at his own face anymore.
For the next 10 years, he doesn't have home. It is implied he lives/sleeps in hotels or at the CBI, mostly. (Especially past S3, he sleeps in the CBI attic) Then he has a home for those two years when he's on the run, but it's still, mostly fulfilling his basic necessities (A bed for sleep, a stove for tea, a small desk for writing and keeping a few spare books). When he returns to USA, he lives in an RVs. (Which by definition is moving, not stable.)
He finds their house when he's lost and trying to cope with the possibility of losing Lisbon. To me, it is only fitting that his next project would be the building of their new home. He focuses on creating something stable and lasting (also as a way to promise her that he's not running away, he's committed). He's entirely involved in the process.
All this text just to say: Jane and Lisbon learn together a healthy meaning for home.

Kitchens
In Paris...
Due to the limited size of her apartment, she essentially has a galley kitchen. In keeping with her lease, she hasn’t made any permanent cosmetic changes to it, so it’s all white paint and nondescript contemporary hardware. She travels too much to maintain actual, living plants, but she does have faux flora adorning the ends of open shelves and window sills for a pop of color. The portion of the Paris kitchen that is mostly Darcy’s decor is the little breakfast nook/dining room right next to it, with a relatively small--by American standards--circular table with three chairs that’s typically covered in whatever Darcy’s working on at the time. When she gets on a health kick, she’ll add a small fruit bowl for her to pick out of.
It’s fair to say that spends more time in the nook than she does the kitchen proper, but the ever present coffee maker is well-loved, and there’s a colorful menagerie of mugs she’s collected over time adorning her shelves.
What did take a little getting used to was the laundry machine in the kitchen, even though it made sense for old building plumbing restrictions. It wasn’t something she hadn’t come across before--Jane Foster’s mother had the same set-up in England--but it was something she had to adjust to since it was a departure from her living situation in New York, for example.
In New Mexico...
She had very little to do with the layout of the Osprey’s kitchen, though she fancies the idea that it was built specifically with her in mind. The open plan and colossal island and farmhouse sink are right up her alley, even with the hidden panic room beneath said colossal island.
There are floating shelves to the left of the six-burner range--which hilariously hides a small armory of guns and knives when prompted by the proper security code--which she’s used to display some of the more craft fair-exclusive dishes she’s found during trips to farmers’ markets, thrift shops, and fleas.
The large fridge is almost always fully stocked--not just for her, but for at least hear and five other fully grown men on high-calorie diets given the nature of agent work and the energy required for healing. There’s also a menagerie of dumb little magnets from tourist traps and cities all over the globe. It took a full rotation of STRIKE agents through the Osprey before they had begun to come to the Osprey with magnet offerings for her, so it’s a steadily growing collection that’s turned into a competition among the agents.
On the six-burner range, there’s almost always a copper kettle and a cast-iron skillet--one of the biggest ones she could get her hands on at a hefty 15″--waiting to be used as with the largest reservations she tends to cook enough for a small army, which is appropriate all things considered.
There’s also a knife block with a discrete biometric scanner build into the base so only authorized personnel can even take a blade from it without sounding the alarm tucked neatly in the corner and lightly obfuscated by a draping fake string-of-pearls succulent.
In Washington, D.C...
Ironically, the kitchen that has the most copper accents is not the Copper Osprey in New Mexico, but Darcy’s kitchen in Washington. She has butcher block countertops and an emerald green subway tile backsplash. She’s left the cabinets and walls a satin finish eggshell white, as a counterbalance to the jewel tone and copper hardware.
It’s ostensibly the iteration with the most outward personality as far as decor is concerned, however, it’s also the one Darcy spends the least amount of time in given her busy schedule as a senator. Which is why it’s also the tidiest of her main verses’ kitchens. Journalists writing fluff pieces like to take an abundance of photos and videos, and Darcy’s savvy enough to recognize that. So it’s ultimately a staged kitchen; something functional that looks great for cameras, but it’s virtually a backdrop in a stage production.
The single most used appliance is the very reliable coffee maker, naturally. As such it’s the area on her countertop that must be cleaned the most regularly lest the coffee spills and grounds stain the block. Accompanying this much beloved and necessary device are a series of mugs that are less a cup and more bowl, and a rotation of travel mugs for her to fill prior to venturing to the Hill.
Additionally, there’s a stand-mixer tucked into a corner for when she’s trying to work through a particularly vexing problem by baking. Her staff--a motley crew intent on saving the world the best way the know how barring superpowers--are especially appreciative when such occasions arise as they get to enjoy the fruits of her labor. Flanking this mixer is a hanging rack of related baking utensils, and the shelf above it--with a warmly colored live edge to it, to compliment the warmth of the butcher block--hosts her mostly robins’ egg blue bakeware.
In terms of legitimate home cooking, Darcy tends to favor take-out and reserve cooking for special occasions. Sometimes, she’ll trade off dinner responsibilities with her brother when their wildly conflicting schedules allow, but mostly she’s either at a work dinner or picking up meals from a short-list of local businesses she’s found and pretends she’s a better meal planner and chef by using actual plates and owls to eat it from. There’s a lot of Asian cuisine, so there’s also a little handle-less tea mug--reminiscent of the ones she always used to see her Japanese neighbors in Portland drink from--used to hold all of the chopsticks she has. There’s a good amount of it that consist of the cheap bamboo ones a lot of restaurants include in her orders, but there’s also a smattering of less disposable ones mixed in for a bit of color.
Keeping with that theme, Darcy’s hung a few suncatchers in the window over the kitchen sink, mostly the little chains of stained and beveled glass to redirect sunlight and toss a smear of sea green or tangerine orange across the blank cabinets.

The Mighty Valkyries #1
Tumblr media
The Mighty Valkyries #1 Marvel Comics 2021 Written by Jason Aaron & Torunn Grønbekk Illustrated by Mattia De Iulis & Erica D’Urso Coloured by Mattia De Iulis & Marcio Menyz Lettered by VC’s Joe Sabino    Jane Foster believed she was the only Valkyrie left – but the fight against Knull, the King in Black, proved her wrong. Now the Valkyries must redefine their roles in a changing world – and Asgard’s not going to make it easy. When Loki comes to Jane with rumors of a beast stalking the souls of Midgard, she leaps into action – but she’s not the only one after the strange wolf’s hide. She’ll need backup...but her ancient coworker has other priorities. Years ago, the warrior made a promise to a woman she loved. And now, it’s time to follow through.    Well i have to say that this issue is just chock full of surprises and that’s precisely why I love it so.  While Jane seems to be just about everywhere these days my real love for the Valkyries comes from Dani Moonstar when she became one in the New Mutants Special when they were scattered across Asgard.  So I am hoping that any book about the group will include this vivacious and fierce young lady.      I am rather enjoying the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  The opening alone is more than enough to grab the readers attention instilling within them the desire to know more.  The character development that we see throughout thanks to the dialogue as well as how the characters act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter is what really fleshes them out as people.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story and those taking part in it it’s very easy to get caught up in this uncontrollable force.    How we see this being structured and the layers within continue from previous arcs as well as those which premiere here set the stage beautifully for what we can expect to see.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is extremely nice to see.    The interiors here are stunning to see.  Mattia’s work on the first story is beyond gorgeous as just the style that we see here brings us this sense of realism that captures faces, facial expressions and body language in ways that further the characterisation at a glance.  I’d like to see more backgrounds but the way that we see depth perception, a sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the story is downright astonishing.  Not to leave Erica out of this either because her work is just as impressive in how she brings all this to us as well.  With the utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels we see two sets of eyes that are sensational storytellers.  The colour work is beautifully rendered as well.  How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is exceptionally well done.     There is some really nice depth and complexity to the storytelling that sets itself apart from the normal Marvel storytelling we’re currently seeing.  Alas it is also this kind of storytelling that tends to get swept under the run from Marvel in favour of the same old, same old that befalls the Avengers and the X-Men which is the real shame here.  So enjoy this while you can because this is the kind of smart, intelligent storytelling that I wish we’d see a heck of a lot more of.

For the week of 21 October 2019
Quick Bits:
Action Comics #1016 continues brilliantly integrating Naomi into the broader DC Universe as she helps Superman with the Red Cloud and introduces Batman to her mom. Some very nice double-page spreads in this one from Szymon Kudranski and Brad Anderson, with a nice structure from Brian Michael Bendis in the form of a investigative journalist format.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
The Amazing Mary Jane #1 is an interesting debut from Leah Williams, Carlos Gomez, Carlos Lopez, and Joe Caramagna. It plays upon MJ’s resumed career as an actress and a different turn for Mysterio (I need to go back and read some of his stuff with Kindred, because something seems off).
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Amazing Spider-Man #32 begins the next stage in Marvel’s seeming neverending onslaught of event after event with the prelude into the upcoming 2099 thing, including the Marvel debut of Patrick Gleason providing line art. The thing that gets you is that it’s good. Nick Spencer, Gleason, Matthew Wilson, and Joe Caramagna give us an interesting hook in a future and a present that have apparently gone wrong, but we’re really unsure what’s happened yet, just that a seemingly powerless Miguel, back in his original costume, needs to find Peter. It’s compelling.

Tumblr media
Amazing Spider-Man: Full Circle #1 is a rather fun and funny story that you really have to go into blind in terms of most content. It’s better to be surprised by the experience. It’s an all-star team of talent including Jonathan Hickman, Chris Bachalo, Gerry Duggan, Greg Smallwood, Nick Spencer, Mike Allred, Kelly Thompson, Valerio Schiti, Al Ewing, Chris Sprouse, Chip Zdarsky, Rachael Stott, Jason Aaron, Cameron Stewart, Mark Bagley, Tim Townsend, Al Vey, Karl Story, John Dell, Laura Allred, Mattia Iacono, Dave McCaig, Tríona Farrell, Nathan Fairbairn, Frank D’Armata, and Joe Caramagna playing a game of exquisite corpse, with each team coming up with a more outlandish cliffhanger for the next team to extricate Spider-Man from. It’s hilarious and incredibly well done.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Angel #6 gives us another perspective on the “Hellmouth” crossover event, as a dejected Spike is tracked down by Fred and Gunn. I really like how Bryan Edward Hill, Gleb Melnikov, Roman Titov, and Ed Dukeshire are continuing the ongoing narrative of the series, while still dovetailing seamlessly into the event. It doesn’t miss a beat on either side of the equation, while still presenting an entertaining story in its own right regardless of whether you’ve read anything previously. All while introducing another player that’s already causing complications. Very nice layered storytelling here.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Tumblr media
Aquaman Annual #2 seems to have been oddly scheduled, with a story taking place after the still ongoing “Amnesty” arc in the main series, but Kelly Sue DeConnick, Vita Ayala, Victor Ibáñez, Jay David Ramos, and Clayton Cowles still deliver an entertaining story that plays into the DOOM that’s been spread by the Legion of Doom and Perpetua. There’s an undercurrent of animosity, anger, and paranoia that seems to be fostered by the doom mark hanging in the sky, and this story nicely builds on it.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Ascender #6 begins the next arc, though it is much more a direct continuation from the story unfolding, with Andy captured and Mila on the run by boat. Jeff Lemire continues to inject humour into this story through the sheer ineptitude from the vampires. It’s a wonder that they can control anything.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Avengers #25 is the finale to “Challenge of the Ghost Riders” from Jason Aaron, Stefano Caselli, Jason Keith, Erick Arciniega, and Cory Petit. It does a good job of building Robbie back up, while showing more of the cracks that we’re seeing in Johnny Blaze that were shored up in Ghost Rider.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Bad Reception #3 goes hard into more traditional themes around horror and, more specifically, slasher films and it’s absolutely wonderful. Juan Doe is giving us a very compelling mystery here, adding more layers as to why the killer is doing this and adding complications through the different characters. Great stuff.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
Batgirl #40 escalates Oracle’s plans as she launches an offensive on Burnside in order to draw out Batgirl. The art this issue from Carmine Di Giandomenico and Jordie Bellaire gets taken to a completely new level. They layouts and colours are absolutely beautiful.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Batman/Superman #3 goes deeper into the Batman Who Laughs’ machinations for the Infected and what he’s trying to unleash on the DC Universe. Joshua Williamson, David Marquez, Alejandro Sanchez, and John J. Hill are very nicely executing this story, playing with the darker elements that have been bubbling since Metal, but presenting it in such a way that it’s not a dour, grim and gritty story. Also, though it doesn’t have the branding, this is still absolutely integral to the overall “Year of the Villain” event.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Black Adam: Year of the Villain #1 aims the infected Shazam at Khandaq at lets explosions ensue from Paul Jenkins, Inaki Miranda, Hi-Fi, and Tom Napolitano. This gives us an interesting look at leadership, humility, and responsibility, seemingly entrenching Black Adam again as a somewhat heroic figure.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Bloodborne #16 concludes “The Veil, Torn Asunder”, revelling in some of the madness that really grips the world. There’s a real unnerving sense of reality crumbling here, somewhat more horrific than what we’ve seen before. Great art from Piotr Kowalski and Brad Simpson.
| Published by Titan
Tumblr media
Contagion #4 gets darker in this penultimate chapter from Ed Brisson, Damian Couceiro, Veronica Gandini, and Cory Petit. Things get even more grim as more and more of the heroes fall and we’re left with a rag tag band of street-level heroes and the z-list ring of magicians.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Count Crowley: Reluctant Monster Hunter #1 is an entertaining debut from David Dastmalchian, Lukas Ketner, Lauren Affe, and Frank Cvetkovic. It revels beautifully in the low budget local network horror programming of the ‘70s and ‘80s, following an alcoholic reporter who gets fired for her behaviour, before taking the job as the host to a b-movie segment like Elvira. Great stuff here.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Criminal #9 distances us a bit from Jane and that story in this chapter of “Cruel Summer”, instead giving us a look at what Leo is up to as his father plans a heist and Ricky’s recklessness. It’s a nice side track, giving us a different perspective again along with a seriously messed up robbery. Love the washes for the flashbacks from Jacob Phillips.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Detective Comics #1014 brings Nora Fries back. And aside from just the extreme lengths that Victor has gone to in order to accomplish it, something about all of this feels very, very wrong and that some new horror is about to be unleashed on Gotham. Beautiful artwork from Doug Mahnke, Christian Alamy, Mark Irwin, and David Baron.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Dial H for HERO #8 gives us the origin stories for The Operator and Mister Thunderbolt from Sam Humphries, Paulina Ganucheau, Joe Quinones, Jordan Gibson, and Dave Sharpe. There’s a rather neat format for the storytelling here as we get parallel stories of The Operator and Mister Thunderbolt, told forwards for one and then backwards for the other.
| Published by DC Comics / Wonder Comics
Tumblr media
Doctor Mirage #3 has some gorgeous and trippy art from Nick Robles and Jordie Bellaire. The oddity in the colours and the impressive layouts and double page spreads really adds to the overall feel and atmosphere of the story, immersing you into the surrealism and unsettling feel that even Doctor Mirage herself is feeling.
| Published by Valiant
Tumblr media
The Flash #81 concludes “Death and the Speed Force” from Joshua Williamson, Scott Kolins, Luis Guerrero, and Steve Wands. There are some major ramifications here for the DC Universe as a whole and some interesting developments for Hunter Zolomon himself. Like last issue, it’s pretty fitting that this is being handled with Kolins’ art. Also, we see a bit of what might be happening because DOOM won.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Ghost Spider #3 keeps things interesting as we get a continued build for two different Miles Warren stories on both Earths-65 and -615, from Seanan McGuire, Takeshi Miyazawa, Rosi Kämpe, Ian Herring, and Clayton Cowles. There’s also a feeling that through school and superheroics across two realities, Gwen might be wearing herself out more than she already has been with a hungry costume, which is a compelling fact that might feed into to forthcoming stories.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
GI Joe #2 takes a bit of a step back from the explosions of the first issue, still following Tiger, but in a much more introspective and measured way as he keeps getting his ass handed to him by Scarlett. Paul Allor, Chris Evenhuis, Brittany Peer, and Neil Uyetake are giving this a very different feel from any previous GI Joe incarnation and it’s very interesting. Some neat twists and some very welcome humour.
| Published by IDW
Tumblr media
Hellboy and the BPRD: Saturn Returns #3 concludes this excellent mini-series from Mike Mignola, Scott Allie, Christopher Mitten, Brennan Wagner, and Clem Robins. I quite like this new approach to the historical series, giving a broader view of the previous years. Also, the development of Liz and Hellboy is wonderful, just great character building.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Immortal Hulk #25 is very strange. Very, very strange. The lead story is set in the future where the Hulk has become the Breaker of Worlds and everything is slated for destruction. A pair of former lovers are trying to stop him. From Al Ewing, Germán García, Chris O’Halloran, and Cory Petit. There’s a lot of your usual dystopian future stuff, plus sending something back to save the future, but there’s more to this. The set up plays into some of the Kabbalistic themes and ideas that Al Ewing has been using through this series and we get an interesting interpretation of Binah and Chokhmah here. Though it might be more appropriate to consider them as their Qliphoth. Granted, you don’t need to get into any of this to enjoy the comic. Especially since it will appear much more straightforward in the present as the usual team of Ewing, Joe Bennett, Ruy José, Paul Mounts, and Petit reintroduce a familiar evil face.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Josie and the Pussycats in Space #1 is a digital original from Alex de Campi, Devaki Neogi, Lee Loughridge, and Jack Morelli. It’s a pretty damn good reimagining of the characters, putting them on an intergalactic USO tour, and then eventually cranking up the weird and the horror.
| Published by Archie Comics
Tumblr media
Justice League Dark #16 is incredible. “The Witching War” continues in this story from James Tynion IV, Alvaro Martínez Bueno, Fernando Blanco, Raul Fernandez, Brad Anderson, and Rob Leigh as Wonder Woman confronts Circe and everything gets doomed. The stakes here feel real, especially as the team continues to fall apart.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
King Thor #2 is as epic as the first issue with Jason Aaron, Esad Ribić, Ive Svorcina, and Joe Sabino seriously bringing the thunder here. The artwork is drop dead gorgeous and the magnitude of the confrontation between Thor, Loki, and Gorr is massive.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Marauders #1 gives us our first look at an X-book in “Dawn of X” without Jonathan Hickman at the helm. It’s really good. Gerry Duggan, Matteo Lolli, Federico Blee, and Cory Petit give us a somewhat more lighthearted approach to some of the concepts, featuring a Kate Pryde who for some reason can’t go through the Krakoan gates, so is recruited by Emma to helm a vessel for the Hellfire Trading Company. It then sets up the more serious element of rescuing mutants who wish to accept Xavier’s offer, but are stuck in hostile regimes. Very nice humour here.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Martian Manhunter #9 rounds the corner for the homestretch, with Steve Orlando, Riley Rossmo, Ivan Plascencia, and Deron Bennett plumbing the depths of one of Charnn’s victims and discovering a bit of a plan for what’s to come. The artwork from Rossmo and Plascencia remains some of the most inventive currently on the stands.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Middlewest #12 puts together the pieces of where Abel and Bobby have been taken and gives us an introductory glance at the horrible place that they’re being forced to work. Skottie Young, Jorge Corona, Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and Nate Piekos continue to work magic on this story.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Money Shot #1 is definitely unique. Tim Seeley, Sarah Beattie, Rebekah Isaacs, Kurt Michael Russell, and Crank! give us a story of a group of scientists who turn to making alien porn in order to fund their science projects. There’s humour and a lot of oddity here. Also, alien sex.
| Published by Vault
Tumblr media
Punisher Kill Krew #4 sees the Black Knight enlisted to the team as they continue to navigate the Ten Realms to get vengeance for the orphaned war children. The art from Juan Ferreyra is absolutely gorgeous.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Resonant #4 dives into the two new regions of Honcho’s island and the Congregation. It’s interesting to see how other areas are dealing with the waves, even in horrifying ways. The art from Alejandro Aragon and Jason Wordie is incredible.
| Published by Vault
Tumblr media
Second Coming #4 sees Sunstar enlist help to find Jesus, while Jesus laments Christians with his new friend Larry in jail, from Mark Russell, Richard Pace, Leonard Kirk, Andy Troy, and Rob Steen. Some very interesting ideas presented here about how a religion can get away from apparent foundational messages. This issue is rounded out by the usual text pieces and short stories.
| Published by Ahoy
Tumblr media
Sera and the Royal Stars #4 has us still in the underworld, from Jon Tsuei, Audrey Mok, Raul Angulo, and Jim Campbell. It’s very interesting to see the zodiacals interacting with variations on various deities. Also, Mok and Angulo remind us that they’re an incredible art team. The visual shifts throughout this issue are beautiful.
| Published by Vault
Tumblr media
Star Wars Adventures: Return to Vader’s Castle #4 gives us a central tale featuring Jabba the Hutt’s extended family and a bunch of disembodied brains, as illustrated by Nicoletta Baldari. We’re also getting to the end of the framing tale from Cavan Scott, Francesco Francavilla, and AndWorld Design and this issue gives us an interesting cliffhanger to take us home.
| Published by IDW
Tumblr media
Strikeforce #2 maintains the high level of storytelling from the first issue, continuing to keep us on our toes about this oddball group, and deepens the threat of the Vridai as the team heads to Satana in Vegas. Tini Howard, Germán Peralta, Miroslav Mrva, and Joe Sabino have hit on a winning combination here and it just keeps getting better.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Unbound #1 is kind of a cyberpunk/fantasy series with this first issue focusing on Lukas, a famous hunter who takes on a helper for his current hunt, from Ralph Tedesco, Oliver Borges, Leonardo Paciarotti, and Carlos M. Mangual. There’s some nice world-building here, but the real hook comes later in the story that’s really compelling. I won’t spoil it, but it definitely takes it above what you’d expect.
| Published by Zenescope
Tumblr media
Valkyrie #4 unveils a lot more of the context of what happened in the first three issues in a rather interesting way, while bringing back a trio of really old Dr. Strange villains. One of whom will be familiar to moviegoers. Al Ewing, Jason Aaron, CAFU, Jesus Aburtov, and Joe Sabino are telling a very interesting story here with some great twists and gorgeous art.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Wonder Woman #81 concludes “Loveless” and with it G. Willow Wilson’s run on the title, here with Tom Derenick, Trevor Scott, Scott Hanna, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Pat Brosseau. It’s not bad, progressing with a few changes and setting up Steve Orlando’s incoming arc.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
You Are Obsolete #2 gets creepier, playing up even more of the Midwich Cuckoos vibes and revealing that the kids are actively spying on people, with the implication that they’d use more salacious details to their benefit as potential blackmail. We’re still not entirely sure why anything is going on, but the series is definitely setting up a creepy atmosphere.

One Broken, One Lost
Pairing: Tony Stark x Reader
Category/Warnings: Angst, sad!Tony, sad!Reader
Word Count: 1,438 (got carried away)
Note/s: I just read this challenge last night but as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to join. So here’s a little something. (If you liked this and want to read more about the characters here, let me know! Maybe they could connect to the other prompts for further exploration.)
Prompt: Day 1: Re-encounter after 3 years from @ibwhellospring ‘s Spring Short Story Writing Event
Jane Foster gives you a pointed look as you stare back at her in the back seat of the limo. It’s dark in here but a burst of colorful lights from the building in front of you illuminate her features.
“We’re already here, Y/N. There’s no point in backing out. We talked about this.”
You shake your head in resignation. “I know. Doesn’t make it less awful.”
“If Erik doesn’t smack you in the head for that, I will.” Jane says. “Remember, we’re here for him.”
You grumble. “Alright. Better get it over with then.”
Tumblr media
You take everything in as you enter the massive foyer. The place evolves as it usually does during these affairs, the staircase transforming into an elegant welcome of lush carpet and golden decor.
You and Jane ascend the stairs; every step familiar and different at the same time. There was a time, a long time ago, when climbing these stairs was the best part of your day--done with the mission, finally home. But those days were gone now.
The full blast of the festivities greet you as you reach the top. A sea of unfamiliar faces weave through the floor and for the first time since the ride over, you feel relieved. Maybe this night wouldn’t be so bad after all. With your worry slowly dissipating, you finally appreciate the music thumping in the background. As long as we encounter strangers all night, I can just make it through.
Echoing your thoughts, Jane murmurs beside you. “Okay,” she says through deep breaths. “So far so good. We don’t know these people and they don’t know us.”
You nod, grateful that despite this being her idea she feels the same. “Now we just have to find our old man.”
“I’ll call him,” Jane says, already dialing.
You steer her towards a less crowded space when you freeze. You realize your mistake as soon as you get a view of the expansive bar.
“He’s not answering,” Jane says beside you, confused, and instead taps a text message.
“Uhm, Jane?” You say looking ahead as you make eye contact with the blue-eyed, blonde god across the room, recognition in his eyes. His jaw drops as his gaze travels from you, then Jane.
“He just called me on our way over, how can he not be answering now?” Jane whispers through gritted teeth as she continues texting away, oblivious.
You grip her arm in panic as Thor makes his way to where you both are.
“What?” She asks, but Thor is already closing the distance until he’s right in front of her.
“Jane,” he speaks, reciting the name full with emotion. She looks up at him, dumbstruck. You feel her skin turn cold under your touch and you let go.
Thor turns to you for a while. “Y/N. It’s good to see you.”
“Yeah, good to see you too,” you reply, voice barely above a whisper.
He looks at you meaningfully--pleading--but a quick glance at Jane makes you stand your ground. “Sorry, Thor. If Jane doesn’t want to be alone with you then I’m not leaving her side.”
He nods in understanding, but there’s agony in his eyes. “It’s been so long since we’ve last seen each other.” He takes a step back. “But I respect your wishes.” He looks at her, pained, and turns to walk the way he came.
“Wait!” Jane croaks. She clears her throat. “Thor.” Thor is back before she could say his name. Jane glances at you with a nervous expression but says, “It’s okay, Y/N. I’ll meet you later with Erik?”
You nod. “Sure, Jane. You got it.” You turn to Thor. “Would you happen to know where the elusive Dr. Selvig is?”
Thor scrunches his face. “Now that I think about it, I haven’t seen him this evening yet. Either he’s still working, in which case you can find him in his office.”
“Yep, that’s more like him.” You nod at the two of them. “See you guys later.”
--
A strange feeling washes over you as you take the lift to the floor of the offices and the labs. Once upon a time, this was the same route you took.
The hall is deserted when you reach the floor and the lights have been dimmed. For a bit you regret having come up here, but sensing that there’s no one around, you settle that this is a better option than mingling with the people at the party below.
You walk left and trace the dark corridor. If he hasn’t changed offices then he’d probably still be at the far end of this stretch. A soft glow coming from the very last door gives you hope. Predictable. “Who ditches a party thrown for them?” You mutter to yourself. “Oh, that’s right. Probably the same guy who’d run around naked at the Ston--”
You’re cut off by what you see embossed on the door on your left.
Y/N Y/L/N
What? That’s… You step closer, peering inside the dark office. You strain to see but as soon as you get a faint glimpse of the layout, you know. Wha--They haven’t touched any of it?
Suddenly, there’s a tightening in your chest and you’re having a hard time breathing. You don’t want to be here anymore. You continue three doors down to where Dr. Selvig’s office is and find that the glow you saw was indeed from one of his table lamps.
The door opens as you try the knob and you step inside. Though the lamp is on, you can see that all monitors are shut off. No sign of Dr. Selvig. No sign of life. Until someone speaks.
Tumblr media
“I never thought you’d come back.”
You gasp, startled, and by instinct takes a step away from where the voice came from. No no no no no… This was a bad idea. I never should’ve…
Your heart pounds in your chest and you feel cold when he steps out of the shadows. He looks the same, really, if not a bit older. But something’s different. He’s dashing in his suit--always dressed for the party, you think--but there’s nothing in his eyes. It’s as if it’s empty. But maybe that’s just the dark.
You want to run, run very far away from here and never look back, but you’re frozen in place, unable to think, unable to speak. It’s like chains, the way he’s looking at you, and you’re captive.
“Y/N.” He says simply but the way it rolls in his tongue brings back a lot--the smell of his cologne, of metal and oil, blood and tears in your mouth, memories, of begging No, please, God no, clutching soft fabric in your hands for days feeling nothing--and it’s too much.
“Tony.” You’re surprised you’re even able to say it, say his name that meant a lot--used to in a far away dream--then a name you’d latch on every bit of anger you felt.
“How long has it been? Three years?” He asks.
“I don’t know, I didn’t keep track.” I did. And none of those years eased the pain.
A sly smile dominates his face but there’s no humor there.
“Right. My bad. I forgot how none of us meant to you.” He laughs to himself and it’s nothing like you’ve ever heard before. “How I meant nothing to you.” He almost spits the words out.
Anger boils deep down your chest and you know you promised to keep your cool, to leave everything behind, but you didn’t count that seeing him would mean this much, still.
“You and I remember the past very differently, Tony, so let me refresh your memory. You and I always meant nothing to each other.”
His jaw clenches and his facade crumbles. Hurt and betrayal burn in his gaze, the fire fueling your own.
You stare each other down, hearts out in the open, one broken and one lost forever. The world stands still and the silence rings in your ears.
Then the sound of rushed footsteps in the hall shatters the moment.
Surprisingly, you don’t cry, at least not where he can see.
The footsteps, closer now.
You turn just in time to see Jane, Steve and Bucky fill the room.
“Y/N,” Jane’s voice quivers as she looks at you and the man who has haunted your memories for the last three years.
You want to cry and breakdown and let it all out. But you know you’d kill yourself first before Tony sees you shed even a tear in this place.
“I want to go home,” you tell Jane.

Extra Security- Bucky/Jane/Steve
03: Enemies (Bucky/Jane/Steve)
It’s not like Jane didn’t realize her research might attract the wrong people, but this was getting scary.
Jane was attacked backstage before giving her speech at the International Scientific Summit. The assailant did not have a gun, which was a pleasant surprise, but the near hits he got with his knife before security tackled him sent the message loud and clear. There was a big, red target painted on her back, and certain people who didn’t want Jane’s research to get out would do anything to hit a bullseye.
That was how she found herself sandwiched between a pair of super soldiers on her way to the Annual Astrophysics Conference at Yale.
“We’re going to be backstage while you’re speaking, and we’ll have eyes and ears all around the auditorium,” Steve said. “Nobody’s getting in without being thoroughly vetted.”
“Don’t you think that’s a little extreme?” Jane asked. The last time she was under security this tight, she’d had an ancient mystical power slithering through her veins.
“Extreme would be keeping sniper rifles trained on anyone who looks suspicious,” said Bucky as he loaded one of the many weapons hidden on his person. “The college wouldn’t let us set up nests, though.”
Jane chuckled. “As if you guys actually would’ve done something like that… you wouldn’t have, right?”
The two men remained completely silent.
They arrived at the campus with just enough time for Jane to go over her notes and for Steve to brief her one more time about their emergency exit strategy.
“Once we've confirmed the threat has passed, we’ll leave out the south entrance.” If he had the entire layout of the building memorized, Jane wouldn’t be surprised. “Now while you’re on stage Buck will be-”
“Bucky’s covering my left, you’ve got my right. Twenty guys in the audience. Two cars parked out front. Fifteen more guys at the back gate and north entrances. I got it, Steve.”
“Yeah, Steve,” Bucky said, punching his partner’s arm. “Don’t be such a mom. Last I checked, that was my job.”
Steve punched him back, but their friendly ribbing had to be cut short as the head of the science department arrived to formally greet Jane. After introductions had been made, Jane joined her colleagues on the panel before a growing crowd of students. The conference was set to start at four and go on until six. Cocktails and dinner would be provided afterward for the speakers. Whether or not Jane stayed for that part depended on how paranoid Steve and Bucky were when the Q&A ended.
“Welcome everyone to today’s conference,” the moderator said at 4:02 on the dot. “Thank you all for coming, and please join me in welcoming our very special guest, Dr. Jane Foster.”
This was met with a roar of applause. Jane waved politely, her tight-lipped smile masking the crippling anxiety just barely seeping through the cracks. Five years ago, she was nothing but a quack and the butt of every other astrophysicists’ jokes. Now she was a leading authority in her field, respected and admired by all. Sometimes, it didn’t feel real. Like any moment now, the other shoe would drop.
Or perhaps a banner would drop. The banner just over her head specifically. It came crashing to earth amid a symphony of gunshots coming from all directions. Jane ducked under the table, reaching into her bag as the rest of the speakers huddled in terror beside her. As far as she could tell, none of them were injured. She checked herself and found no blood. The shooters were either stupid or not aiming at her.
Two men dressed in Yale sweaters flew across the stage, thrown by an incensed Bucky Barnes. They struggled to find their weapons but were too slow to avoid Bucky’s expert shooting skills. On Jane’s right, Steve slammed his shield into the face of the moderator, who seconds before had whipped a semi-automatic pistol out from behind the curtains and aimed at the table.
“I knew there was something off about that guy,” one of the other speakers whispered. “Who pairs plaid socks with a striped tie?”
While Steve, Bucky, and the rest of their men were distracted, one large fellow bounded towards the stage. He leaped over the podium and turned the table over, much to the horror of Jane and her peers. They screamed and clung to each other for dear life. With greater reflexes than she knew she had, Jane whipped out a gun-shaped object and fired at the man. From her vantage point, she couldn’t aim for his chest like she would’ve otherwise. The pin caught something much lower instead.
Every man in the room and a few of the women winced sympathetically as the man went down, fifty thousands volts of electricity coursed through his groin. Jane released the trigger just as Bucky finished up with the last of the assassins.
“Lucky she got to you before I did,” he growled at the man, kicking him in the ribs. “Trust me. That was a mercy.”
“Okay, Bucky, we all know how badass you are,” Jane said. “Please just put him with the rest.”
The living assassins, all two of them, were transferred into police custody to be held until further notice. Interrogations would have to be conducted to find out who they were working for and how they smuggled their weapons in, but for now, Jane’s knights in shining armor led her off campus, as far as their nondescript rental car would allow.
“Where’d you even get that thing?” Bucky asked as Jane stored her taser back in her bag.
Jane shrugged. “Darcy thought I should have one. After the last time and all.”
“Remind me to thank Darcy later,” Steve said from the front seat. “You okay back there, doll?”
“I will be once the adrenaline wears off. And after I get something to eat.” Jane rubbed her stomach. “All that fighting for my life sure makes me hungry.”
“I told you we weren’t being extreme,” Bucky muttered, grinning innocently when Jane shot him a glare.
“How does McDonald’s sound? I could go for a Big Mac,” said Steve.
“Works for me,” Jane said. “As long as Bucky doesn’t steal all my fries this time.”
“I make no promises.”

Here we go. Tag for this liveblog is "lulu reads mighty thor"; my general tag for The Mighty Thor is "jane foster is a magical girl." I'll add links when I'm not on mobile. Like, I love this cover. I love Thor's outfit, and I love that her arms are ridiculously huge. It brings me joy. I like the layout, with tiny, fragile Jane Foster dwarfed by all these larger-than-life magical shenanigans, yet unquestionably at the center of it all. I love Odinson's luscious booty, front and center. I love the Mucha-style hair. I love the Thor title with Mjolnir in there. The Bifrost winding through the whole thing. Heimdall. Loki lookin' nice and stabby. Laufey's ugly-ass pinky with the dark elf peekin' over it. Malekith in there tryin' to make the MCU regret crushing him with a spaceship and also casting Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster. Dislikes: I am not a fan of Beta-Ray Bill. Not for any particular reason. I'm sure he's a great guy, but he's ugly and his name sounds like a cowboy. Also looks like Odin's bein' a bitch again. Anyway that's an absurd amount of words to spend in the cover but here I am.

TRDL 2018 Series - 1801 Thor [Jane Foster]
TRDL 2018 Series - 1801 Thor [Jane Foster]
This piece was done as a special commission for a client I met in Portland at the Heroes and Villains Fanfest/ Walker Stalker Con. I had wanted to do a Jane Foster Thor for a few years but hadn't had a chance yet, so this was good timing. This one is a nice companion piece to my Valkyrie as Thor Redesign [Tessa Thompson] and my two Lady Sif pieces. Strong women!

Last but not least are games! Board and card games make the perfect gift for so many people! They usually make great gift-exchange ideas and are perfect for anyone young at heart.
Sushi Go: First, this is a simple and fun card game perfect for 2-5 players. It involves picking one card, then passing it to the next player until all the cards have been picked.
One Night Ultimate Werewolf: This is such a fun party game! It is for 3-10 players and involves everyone closing their eyes and listening to the game app for instructions, then you must figure out who the werewolf is!
Flux: This classic 2-5 player game is a quick and fun draw-one-play-one card game.
Exploding Kittens: This is another fun card game where you loose if you find an exploding kitten. Super fun!
We Didnt Play Test This: This is a ridiculous 2-10 player card game that only takes about 1-5 minutes to play with very simple, yet strange rules.
Uno: Next, Uno is such a classic game I had to add it. It is perfect to throw into someones glove box for a rainy day or to add to anyones game collection.

Exit The Game: SO. MUCH. FUN. This is like having an escape room in your own home!
Catchphrase: This classic timed game is perfect for parties and is always a blast to play!
Punderdome: This is a fun card game for pun-lovers.
Joking Hazard: Another fun card game that allows you to move comic-style cards around into a fun story!
