From a new interview with Gordon Morris (John Weekes):
Dr Potter was so impressed that he is now in discussions with The Terror creator, David Kajganich, about putting together an audio CD that would include other key cast members alongside Gordon reading from the letters of the characters they portrayed.
Again, not too much to say with this one actually. There’s mention of Sir John ordering all sorts of poles and way-markers pounded into the ice while they’re frozen in at Beechey Island but having them constantly smashed up and ruined by the shifting ice which is very symbolic, I think.
There’s a great and chilling description of John Hartnell’s death that sees him coughing up blood just like David Young and being dead within minutes. Interestingly, it’s specifically Fitzjames that blocks the sickbay during the autopsy - “None of them could abide the idea that the ship’s surgeons were cutting into the body. Now only the bulk, rank, and demeanour of Commander Fitzjames stood between the angry brother, confused seamen, and our Sick Bay.”
Chapter Seven: Franklin
“Franklin’s private privy was almost exactly the size of Captain Crozier’s and all the other officer’s entire cabins.” Need I say more? I have to wonder if this was actually true irl - it wouldn’t surprise me if it was.
One of the many things that’s annoying me thus far about Simmons’ writing is the lack of appropriate lingo and characterisation for the regular seamen.
Every single one of them so far speaks like an overly-enthusiastic wee Cockney orphan and it’s really irking me - especially the big screed of dialogue in this chapter for Erebus’ Ice Master Reid. Like, Dan, you don’t need to write him och-aye-the-noo-ing or chuntering away in Doric or anything but the man was Aberdonian - you could make even a cursory attempt to write him as such!
This just in! Edward Little makes a joke in this chapter! It’s a rubbish joke but everyone laughs anyway! Love that for him!
There’s mention of Sir John ordering the men into harnesses to try to bodily haul the damned ship itself through the ice as the lead are closing off! Is that not the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever heard?! I for one will be reeling over it for days!
