happy 176th victory point note day to all who celebrate!

25th April 1848

HMShips Terror and Erebus were deserted on the 22nd April 5 leagues NNW of this having been beset since 12th Sept 1846.

The officers and crews consisting of 105 souls under the command of Captain F. R. M. Crozier landed here — in Lat. 69°37’42’’ Long. 98°41’

This paper was found by Lt. Irving under the cairn supposed to have been built by Sir James Ross in 1831 — 4 miles to the Northward — where it had been deposited by the late Commander Gore in May June 1847.

Sir James Ross’ pillar has not however been found and the paper has been transferred to this position which is that in which Sir J. Ross’ pillar was erected.

Sir John Franklin died on the 11th of June 1847 and the total loss by deaths in the Expedition has been to this date 9 officers and 15 men.

Join us in reading The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley (aka the Graham Gore sci-fi romance novel) this summer!

Whether you're an og fan of prestige classic The Terror, love book clubs, always wanted to read a romance novel about Graham Gore, a combination of these, or none of the above — join us in reading The Ministry of Time.

How does the book club work?

We have set up a meeting time availability survey to find a time that works best for everyone who wants to join.

The book comes out May 7th. To give everyone some time to get their hands on a copy, we will kick off the book club in the week of May 20th.

Gambier spoon (1818)

I obtained a silver fiddle pattern spoon made in 1818 with Gambier heraldry, showing an 'eagle displayed'. Crazy to think that this spoon was made when Fitzjames was 5 years old. It's so cool to have this!

Somehow one of the forks that John Rae brought back from the Arctic in 1854 was attributed as having belonged to Fitzjames. It didn't have the Gambier eagle but rather a cockatrice which belongs to a different family. But being illegitimate Fitzjames did not get to use a family crest or heraldry anyway unless he created his own variation. One of the things I'm researching is how the fork misattribution came about. The fork is in the collection of the National Museum of Scotland, where it's on display:

Comparisons of the same areas aboard the HMS Erebus wreck (left) and the HMS Terror wreck (right)

HMS Terror is in pristine condition and I get so excited thinking about what we'll learn once Parks Canada is able to more fully explore the wreck and gather more artifacts. I believe they'll be doing more work on Terror this year if weather permits.
