Fuck it, I listened to Good&Great! Y'all know I can't resist Key's jams LMAO

Good&Great as a single is such a good exercise in simplicity for me. Its straight forward in its message, execution, and atmosphere. It does exactly as intended of its message and the vocal melody is just perfect in its catchiness. But I love the lil flairs to keep it interesting such as the cool lil buried guitar riffs in the later half of the track and those kind of womping synths behind the lead synth line. My only criticism is, I dislike how the track just ends on a cut, especially because Key is doing these fantastic vocal runs at the very end and your brain wants to hear the end of it because it feels like those runs don't get proper space to expand! I would've extended the instrumental just a few seconds to phase them out with the runs ending isolated for a few seconds with a phase out on them too as well

Can't Say Goodbye is such a solid funk groove. It actually reminds me so much of what Alex Anwandter had going on in his earlier albums and like say more toned back Daft Punk funk tracks. I love anything with a fat bass line honestly. I love the vocal lines on this one and again theres these lil bass riffs behind the main rhythm during the second half of the chorus I believe that are like treats. Also the rolling drums near the eeenndd!!! This sound is just classic.

Intoxicating, the way she looks in my head is gorgeous, I'm so tempted to paint this!! Theres like all these lil sounds that just mesh soo well like choreographed confetti and streamers is how I'd describe it? I do feel that lil tone switch hit me a lil abruptly but Key's vocal peak starting there makes it less noticeable. Theres something about all the lil electronix flourishes in this that I cant describe for some reason, but I adore them and it elevates this outside the territory of filler track.

Live Without You, I genuinely love the consistent rolling bass lines through this entire album, it adds a nice cohesion to the over all album, this track included. This is a perfect track for playing on a car ride home at night. She's broody and sort of melancholy in her sexiness lol love that bit where the bass beat just descends into these crazy deep dark sounds before another chorus hits.

CoolAs OK OK I get why the girls are losing their goddamn minds over this one. She is THE track. Goddamn cosmic disco perfection!! 😭😭😭😭 That spoken chorus is soooo clever, so cool, and you wanna chant along when it hits. Also adore the vocal melody in the versus like it's got that operatic touch in old disco tracks. Damn this really is THE best track on the whole EP.

Mirror, Mirror is a good lil closer. There's something very subtly twinkly and dreamy about this one. By that, I mean there aren't obvious sharp twinkling sounds that catch in the ear, but instead there's more subdued rolling and sparkling sounds that are layered over each other so well that are far more soothing than making one prone to sigh dreamily.

Over all she gets like an 8/10 for me. As dancy and bass heavy as this ep is theres isn't like a very EXPLOSIVE or bombastic peak. Even it's most powerful track, CoolAs feels subdued. But it's a sort of subdued that isnt a bummer; theres something mature, calm, and yet sophisticated in this EP's dancibility and groove that I absolutely appreciate. It feels like a matured and aged pallet within Key's colors thats more confident in its simplicity if that makes sense?

Fetenhits: Neue Deutsche Welle 1998 Neue Deutsche Welle / New Wave / Synthpop / Post-Punk / Pop-Rock / Pop

Only a small handful of songs from Germany's new wave scene (neue Deutsche welle, or NDW for short) ever really successfully spilled over onto the US charts; I mean, all we ever really got were Nena's "99 Luftballons," Peter Schilling's English-language version of "Major Tom," and Falco's "Rock Me, Amadeus," which are all excellent musts for any 80s new wave/synthpop classics playlist. But beyond those few, not much else really comes to mind.

But as this 1998 double-disc set from the Polystar label's Fetenhits series clearly demonstrates, the greatness that was NDW went far beyond just that small crop of tunes. And if you love new wave music—that is, lighthearted, positively upbeat, adorably goofy and dancy fusions of rock guitar with simple synth melodies from the 80s—then you will cherish this release, because that's exactly what it's made of. And 97.5% of it (I pulled out a calculator to get that number) happens to be sung in German, a language whose vocalists on this release seem to be fully cognizant is not the most elegant of tongues, which is something that they tend to gleefully lean in to, thus further enhancing this album's overall charm.

Take "Ich will Spaß" by German one-hit wonder Markus, for example. This guy sounds like he's singing this thing with a smile on his face because he knows just how ridiculous he sounds in both his voice and language. But there's this sheen of silly irresistibility to it all anyway, thanks to not only his own singing, but the naturally nostalgia-triggering synth work that goes along with it. And evidently, the Germans loved this song a lot, having pushed it all the way to #1, and now too, so do I; it’s really catchy.

And that's just one example of the early 80s fun that's on here. Nena also end up delivering two other great songs in addition to "99 Luftballons": their debut single, "Nur geträumt" and their epic "Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann," which starts out sounding like an 80s action movie or Miami Vice-type score with its extended instrumental intro before transitioning into the band's exquisite brand of synthpop-rock that they became especially known for conjuring.

Somewhat surprisingly though, Falco's aforementioned "Rock Me Amadeus" isn't on here, but "Der Kommissar" is, and I'm willing to bet that if you're from an English-speaking country, then you're far more likely to be familiar with the English-language cover by After the Fire that got put into heavy rotation on MTV than you are the original German-language version by Falco himself. It's great and it also happens to be currently rolling around in my head as I write this post 😄.

Other things worth mentioning? Well, there's this bit of sci-fi futurism called "Codo" by a band named DÖF that starts to sport this backing vocal melody at the 50-second mark that actually sounds eerily similar to the lead melody from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer theme song, which came out more than a decade after the NDW hit did. Queue it up and you'll hear it. And also, if you're wondering why on earth there's a polar bear featured on the cover of this album, it's solely because of Grauzone's beautifully strange "Eisbär," which translates to "polar bear" and is phonetically pronounced simply as "ice bear." Minimal verses and clattering choruses of discordantly clanging guitar and bleep-bloop synths on that one; just some lovely, distinctively German stuff right there 🥰.

I've never really delved into much NDW before, but this release feels like as good an entry point as any. And it seems like an excellent retrospective on the whole era too. Don't sleep on Joachim Witt, Hubert Kah, or Ideal either. Lots of great acts on here that represent this German wing of mostly early 80s new wave.

Current album obsession: The Book of Broken Glass By Sarah and the safeword

Something totally new and weird that I'm gonna try to do when i have feelings about albums I'm gonna break them down track by track and talk about them

Sarah and the Safe Word is a dark cabaret band from Atlanta Georgia fronted by Sarah Rose. they are currently my favorite band and I wanted to break down this album and talk about it so if what I have to say about it seems interesting please give The Book of Broken Glass a listen

Track one: A Wake, Violet Makes Her Wish The opener to our album setting the mood with a simple poem "Several years of sorrow without breathing Mourn the dead Lamps are out of midnight oil Lost lovers and lost friends Now, the jury's hung No kingdom come Sold bones to pay the rent Let us gather 'round the fire once more and sing Sing while light is left" Its simple and sets the mood as our main character violet attends a funeral and starts our story

Track two: Ruby Off The Rails Track two introduces us to Ruby Violets mother and and delves into a ritual used to summon Something that isn't fully explained delving into the occult and gothic themes of the album

Track Three: Old Lace Old lace leans heavy into the dark cabaret sound that the band has established in previous albums the song deals with feelings of ego death and the loss of identity.

Track Four: A Little Evil Never Hurt Anyone The Sluttiest song on this album its dancy its fun and its all about doing things you know you shouldn't. its meaning is in the title and the chorus "Just do it in anger Just do it for fun A little evil never hurt anyone"

Track Five: No One’s Home My interpretation of this song is that it delves into Sarah finding out more information about her father learning that he wasn't what he seems that he's something not human and so is she.

Track Six: But Tonight! We Dance! Ft. Dog Park Dissidents This song is fantastic and Dancy and features queer punk duo Dog Park Dissidents its also in my interpretation of the album when Violet starts to die

Track Seven: Too Dressed Up To Die THE STRINGS IN THIS SONG!! the violin work in the song is by far the best part its really all i can gush about as far as the story of the album goes violet is absolutely dying here

Track Eight: Soldiers Of Rock N’ Roll Ft. Chumbawamba No really it features Chumbawamba and it fucks it is an amazing song and starts pushing into a heavier sound before the next song does a full Genre switch. Story wise something is absolutely saving Violet here

Track Nine: All The Rage Ft. Jamee Cornelia Here we have a genre switch to a Nu Metal song and that's not me being discouraging its amazingly done you don't notice that's what happened till the rap breakdown hits but then it hits and its mind blowing

Track Ten: Broken Crowns, Forgotten Pageants Sarah Rose Flexes everything her voice can do here. this song really Transends influence in my mind it is Sarah rose and nothing else and it is beautiful.

Track Eleven: Sky On Fire Another beautiful song with fantastic work from the violins The line in this song that really stands out to me in relation to the story of the album is "But if I ever had a father Then I know his name was John" her grappling with her memory's of her father and finding out what he really was

Track Twelve: A Sleep: The Owl Makes His Offer We opened with a wake and close with a sleep this is the best song on the album bar none but for it to hit properly you have to listen to the rest of the album all i can say about it is that its possibly the best song I've ever heard and it ends with the same poem that we opened this album with.

Track Thirteen: X So this song requires some context Sarah Rose is a transgender woman and this song is Violet regretting never coming out to her father as trans and her transitioning "And all that I want is your chance to see tomorrow In a skin that I can live in Or a life that wasn't borrowed" the song is a beautiful way to end the album and that's the album give it a listen and feel free to rb with your thoughts and opinions

idoltalking in ur inbox again but switch got a new song and the mv is soooo good????? it's called romancing cruise!!

switch is a unit with "magic" as their whole vibe!! they call themselves magicians who bring happiness :) their leader, natsume is a witch, too!! switch as a unit isn't one of the major players in the plot, but they still are really lore-heavy because of natsume and tsumugi. natsume is one of the five eccentrics and tsumugi was part of ex-fine!! they also used to know each other as kids. because of their affiliations in the war era, they were at odds with each other to put it simply. i'm not too knowledgeable about their past bc i haven't gotten to reading any major stories about them, but they are super interesting to me!! their third member, sora, is natsume's apprentice!!

their music is very upbeat and they usually use lots of brights colors in their outfits and stage lighting!! switch is also one of the units that consistently has fun choreography :) some of the other units (undead) literally just stand there during their mvs so the dancy units are always fun to watch!!

overall, switch has a pretty playful vibe!! they have their magic motif, and their songs use really energetic synths, so their new song, romancing cruise, really!! caught me off guard!! they still used their typical synths, but the song was slower than they normally use, and it had a much more mature vibe!! i'm pretty sure that's helped along with the more formal outfits they're wearing and the color lighting being a calmer color. in romancing cruise the lights are mostly a deeper blue, as opposed to the lime green that's in most of their mvs!! the effects and set are so super cool too, and the outfits have sparkly lapels which like. fave evers. natsume has some really good expressions in it too!!!

natsume is the red one, sora is the yellow one, and tsumugi's blue!! tsumu didn't have as many cool parts this time around, but that makes sense bc he was the center for their last song, brilliant smile (i LOVE brilliant smile so bad)

RN Breakfast

Back to sunny Australia I listened to another talkshow but this time it was breakfast the breakfast shows always need to be quite talky cause not many people want to be listening to dancy music first thing from waking up.

This breakfast show was news based catching people up on what's happening around not only Australia but also the world it dealt with topics such as workplace culture issues within the Australian artic research station aswell as heavy hitting issues as the Israel, Gaza, Hama's conflict here in the UK typically we outsource out news to a station and they read it for us, and that is how we distance ourselves from heavy topics especially stations such as capital and such.

The reason I mention this is as OFCOM has a considerable amount of rules we follow and Australia doesn't so if we were to cover this topic it requires alot of research to make sure to cover these topics without breaking these rules. It's what give Australian radio it's charm to me. Being able to talk about any sort of topics is fun to hear, although I say any sort of course Australian radio has many rules I am not aware as but they certainly have more freedom than that of the UK.

The playlist again isn't much to say and as my previous post this presenter is a great interviewer being aware of time constraints aswell as viewer attention, making sure not to have the interviews last to long but not jumping in and cutting the interviewee off. My only criticism is that its so much so fast and it doesn't stop for a breather.

yes i do, it involves wattpad, zodiac shippings, 9 yr olds writing romance and end up with reposting anime arts they found pretty and canon with the character. dark time.

of course! solangelo soulmate au where you cant feel certain emotions until you meet your soulmate. will doesn’t know how to be happy (cant laugh cant smile, he can fake it but everyone will know) and nico doesn’t know how to be sad (he can cry, but its not natural, he's not gonna feel a thing, it only wetted his face. meaning he cant grief or sad about his mother and bianca's death, he feels empty)

(sike this is actually a one-shot, here u go)

will was going to practicing his guitar with some of his college-band friends like the usual. then this black hair guy unexpectedly joined in out of nowhere, he doesn’t do music, not a member, only friends of will’s bass guy (jason), he sits in a corner, often moving his pencil around, writing, drawing, in his full-of-sticky-notes journal, very quiet. he leaves them alone and they leave him alone.

the guy hangs out with them a lot, keeps minimum talking, works mainly. today just like others, instruments, sketching pencils, the black hair guy's musical voice, probably Italian, too bad he's not a singer, will off-minded thought, the usual.

but today, no so-so. unusual things happen, unfortunately.

when the band's having a break, nico (jason said once), suddenly asked, “what some fancy words can you think of?” jason looks at him immediately, “um...fancy like, what?” nico shrugs, “medical-related”

the member shift their gazes at jason, making him a little on edge, will thumps on his guitar, pitied the guy, “gosh i dont know! uh, crispy....critter?”

“that’s not even fancy”

“well, it’s medical-related. it means......" jails off, jason doing his little dancie-dance, then drops it and says with a stoic face, "sorry i forgot” nico scoffs, rolls his eyes annoyingly. will feels strange things starting in his stomach, he blames them on lou's tomato sandwich.

don't know what drives him, but will calmly says, surprises even himself, "it means you have severe burns on your body"

"oh? i thought it just jace's occasionally kick-the-brain thinking or something, thanks" will had never heard him talk this much in a sentence before, it's quite nice. "see jace, your guitar guy is way more superior than you"

"hey!" nico chuckles, mischievously. he makes will's guitar thumping misses some beats, "great, now he likes you, good luck with that" he doesnt know what's that about, but somehow pleased with it. nico tilts his head, smugs "can't blame me for liking awesome people, jace. what? jealous cause i dont like you just as same?"

nico is full of unexpected things. a moment ago you thought of him as some emo guy with 'dont talk to me' aura, then now you have this charming cool chad that can punch and persuade you its his way to show affection.

nico casually stands up, with a cat-smirk on his face, professionally spins his pencil, then points at their drummer (piper), "pretty drummer. you. next"

"oh ok um, what's that word again. netter, nectar—noctor! it's uh...yeah, same to jason"

"will, can you please?" hearing his name come from nico's lips sound nice but also, rare. he shouldn't get used to it this easily, really, but somehow it's felt natural, a worth spoking fact, "it's a mix between nurse and doctor. nurses who think they are doctors"

"extraordinary. wonderful. fascinating. truly the best. this guy" jason looks at him and nico incredulously, will confusingly looks back at him, "you dont even know if he's right or wrong—" brings a small laugh out of nico, "well i have the wifi password, so joke on you jass"

jason and the gang gape in horror at nico, will too, but he doesn't seem so with his poker face, "wtf nico we've been here way longer than you. Mr.D had us bc my dad forced him to so he hates everything thats involved us, means, you too, but how come you get to be the exception? and you didn't even tell us?"

someone says 'we dont stan'

nico taps unnaturally fast on his phone, "n-o-c-t-o-r, he's right. good job will" and gives him two thumbs up, annoying jason, "if you had a phone this whole time, you could have just googled it, why asked us?"

"jass, you horrible nut-toes! you cant always google things, you have to find true inspirations and stupidity. crispy critter cant suddenly appear in your head and have you searched for it", he has a point. veins pop on jason's forehead, he's massaging his eyes, equally giving up.

wow this nico dude is annoying, and cute, it's unexpected, he's quite the loved-extrovert, "anyways. next. dude with weird satanic stuff on his blue t-shirt."

"for god's sake they are not weird satanic stuff, they are poseidon's symbols! what's s wrong with you? "

"everything, say the word, king"

"butts"

"you're canceled. peasant. disgustingly mushy slice of apple will catch you in your dream tonight" nico spins nicely on his feet, "you. who looks like a sad man that would eat sharpies for attention"

leo, face scrunched up entirely, expressively saying 'i am going to strangle and kiss you', "pregnanc—"

"gods no. straight people. furry mfs" nico sighs, exaggerated, watches the band as if they just broke into his house, only stealing his nuttela jar to eat it with microwaved-pizza, true disappointment, "will, you're my last hope, say the thing"

the thing, he said. will thought a little in his head, weird movements on his mouth, threaten to break, "there's one. it's a type of lung disease, that's caused by inhaling volcanic ash and sand dust"

everyone looks at him expectedly, he tenses a bit at, the attention, especially with nico's burning gaze.

"pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis"

"..."

"...wtf did y—"

"will, dude, what's the gibberish is that...?"

"you 'idnt catch? pneumonoultr-"

"no stop"

and will chuckles gently, half-heartedly, too quiet but still clear as the sky with no clouds.

then when he realized it, he stops, snaps out of it immediately, his eyes blown wide, and he coughs, heavily. something rumbling under his throat, welcome, ticklish, new, strange...refreshing. he couldn't stop, and it spills, continue to spill, more and more, and he has a hard time breathing.

will is laughing now, everyone gawks at him, cracked, shocked, confused, amazed. they have never seen him smile, least laugh.

nico has a misty expression on his face. like a shutdown computer, he's loading. and will finds it funny, gosh, it looks hilarious to him.

will looks up at nico and the other, can't contain his giggles. shoulder shaking, cheek blushing. something blooms in his heart, connected, full, new, loved. it's weird, but not in an unpleasant way, he likes it, adores it, loves it. it's nice, so nice.

whats happening to him, will thought. his cheeks are starting to hurt and his heart is starting to feel vulnerable.

"n-nico? you ok?"

nico's still standing there.

and he slowly, steady, turns his face to will.

then, tears.

too slow. too big. too much. too natural. too clean, tears.

he's crying. nico's crying.

"...w-what's happening to me—?"

How do you think the love interests look ?

Oh man this changes from time to time, but currently I see them like:

Alex to me has that strawberry blonde kind of ginger. Fem Alex keeps it in a braid, masc Alex can let his get pretty long before he cuts it at time. Probably about 5ft10, with some toned muscles. A bit stocky in terms of physique, which is very useful for being on a farm. Their face is round in shape, they have freckles that run down their neck and spread across their shoulders. When they blush, it's a full body blush. Bright blue eyes, their eyes have a happy look to them. Skin has a nice tan to it, classic farmers tan though. Mostly dressed in work clothes (overalls, boots, shirts etc).

Avery has very well groomed, slightly greying hair. It's is always done in a professional way. Eyeliner sharper than Kylar's knives. In order to keep themselves as presentable as possible, you'll find them at the gym at least three times a week. They have a four pack, lean muscles. Probably about 6ft2, with their face having more angular features. Their eyes look almost cruel at times with an Amber colour to them. Could see them as having south Asian heritage. Typically in all black suits (pencil skirts for fem) and doesn't know what the word casual means.

Black Wolf is, well, covered in black fur. Hair is very unruly and long, could use some grooming. Tall and built (since they have best food privilege). I'm thinking they might be around 6ft4. Extremely intimidating gaze, their yellow eyes just pierce right into you in a way that makes you think they can tell how scared you are (they can).

Eden I see as rugged. Their hair is brown, left in a messy wolf-cut kind of mullet. Will use a headband to push the fringe out of their eyes if they can't be bothered to cut it. About 6ft4, and they're fucking ripped. Covered in scars, has a snail trail and masc Eden has some hair on his chest. He also has some light stubble on his face (even when he shaves in the morning it seems to grow back straight away). They have a scar on their left cheek, and their face is usually set in a scowl. Prominent jaw. Their eyes are brown and look very tired when you catch them in a vulnerable moment. Has a tan to their skin, and usually covered in dirt after a hunt. I do hc them as looking a little like Hugh Dancy and Zach McGowan (especially as Roan). Wears earthy tones, typically wool, fur and leather.

Great Hawk has these almost golden feathers (and hair, in harpy form). Doesnt cut their hair, so it's incredibly long but they groom well. Tall, but lanky at about 6ft5. Very slim form, but its heavily muscled. The talons on their feet are as long and sharp as a kassowary's. Eyes are golden brown. Another LI with very angular features.

Kylar has their black hair in a very mop like form. Short king/queen, about 5ft3. This gamer has a squishy tummy! They spend all of their time drawing and playing games, no way do they have toned muscles. Makes them very scrappy in a fight. Their green eyes are wide, kind of like Elijah Woods eyes. Makes them look even more youthful than they already do. Very soft skin, too. I'm thinking Caribbean descent? Lives in a black hoodie and sweats, but I can't decide if they're converse or vans.

Robin is very boy/girl next door. For male Robin, go look up Alex Pettyfer in Storm Chaser, thats him. Fem Robin keeps her hair at her shoulders, no fringe. Hair is pretty straight and dirty blonde. About 5ft8. Has a fairly average body type, you can feel some muscle and there's pudge, but they don't put much more effort in to their physique. More of a square face shape. Likes wearing bright colours.

Whitney is vain. Sandy blonde, has the signature over the eye fringe. Masc Whitney has an undercut, fem keeps hers in a messy ponytail. About 5ft11 (says they're 6ft), very athletic body type that they try to maintain as much as possible. Very quick. Has a diamond face shape, brown eyes. Looks kind when they aren't glaring (which the do most of the time). Very full lips. Paler skin, burns pretty easily in the sun. Multiple ear piercings. Sense of fashion is very messy on purpose. Wears a chain around their neck at times. And I mean a real chain, not a cheap jewelry one. Its heavy and has been used as a weapon.

Hey, I missed some Sackler and thought of this, surprise surprise, instead of sleeping. It’s currently 2 am where I live and here I am. Anyway, hope you enjoy it!

Summary: the last time you had seen him made you wish you would never do it again

Sitting in the chair next to the play director, you waited patiently as the actors one by one performed for their audition, it was boring, frustrating and you were almost throwing a chair at the stage. Full-time TV goddess and part-time television detective Gillian Anderson is never far from our minds. Here are nine of our favorite TV roles from the actress, whose on-screen legacy reaches far past The X-Files franchise to British period dramas, eccentric Bryan Fuller shows, and animated snarkiness.

Dana Scully in The X-Files

Let’s just get this way out of the way, shall we? Not because Anderson’s turn as Agent Dana Scully over the course of 11 seasons (and counting?) of The X-Files TV show and two The X-Files movies should or could be diminished, but because most everyone is familiar with Anderson’s turn as the chronically skeptical FBI agent.

Dana Katherine Scully is more than a TV character. She’s an institution. I grew up watching The X-Files and having a female character who wasn’t the same cookie-cutter example of what it was to be a woman made me feel like much more was possible. Gillian Anderson’s understated, yet affecting portrayal of the character was a large part of that.

Scully was (and still is) complex and flawed. She is a scientist with a commitment to her Catholic faith. She is a skeptic who, nonetheless, believes in Mulder. And she is funny as anything—much of that down to Anderson’s dry, deadpan delivery (“Bad Blood” being a great, oft-cited example). If Gillian Anderson had to have one character define her career, she could do a lot worse that Scully.

Miss Havisham in Great Expectations

If you’re looking for a great Great Expectations adaptation, the 2011 BBC/PBS miniseries is not your best bet. If you’re looking for a role in which Gillian Anderson gets to chew up the scenery in a miniseries-stealing performance, this three-part series is for you.

Anderson is so often cast in understated roles, and she plays them incredibly well, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t gratifying to see her make moves as a completely over-the-top villainous character, like her turn as the bitter, mentally unstable, and highly-flammable Miss Havisham. As they should probably start saying in England: Come for the Dickens, stay for the Anderson.

Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier in Hannibal

Hannibal is not a show for the faint of heart, but it rewards viewers endlessly with its sumptuous visuals, unpredictably gruesome plot, and its ridiculously stellar cast. Gillian Anderson is only one of the many talented actors who make up this ensemble — including Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne, and Gina Torres.

Remember how we were talking about how Anderson often plays understated characters? Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier may be the most understated of the bunch. Perhaps the most enigmatic character on a show filled with enigmatic characters, Anderson manages to imbue the sly, clever Bedelia with a complex vulnerability that her cold, proper surface only occasionally lets through. If you are a fan of Gillian Anderson or good TV, Hannibalis a must-watch.

Lady Dedlock in Bleak House

A big part of Gillian Anderson’s career renaissance has been Dickensian adaptations and this is, perhaps, the best example. The BBC did a 15-part (eight-hour) adaptation of Bleak House in 2015. Anderson took on the role of the cold, secretive Lady Dedlock and she is one of many deft moving parts in this brilliant retelling of the Dickens classic, which is much more fun than its lawyer-heavy premise might suggest.

Anderson seemingly agrees. She spoke with The Daily Beast about finding an appreciation for Dickens through her acting, saying:

One of the only things that I have regrets about in my life is my experience of school and education. I wish I had known how important it was to pay attention … My first foray into a lot of the classics has been through my work. It’s only after falling in love with the screenplay or adaptation that I’ve then gone on to read the novels themselves.

Stella Gibson in The Fall

If you’re and Anderson fan and haven’t yet watched The Fall,a Northern Ireland-set crime drama about the cat-and-mouse game between Detective Inspector Stella Gibson and serial killer Paul Spector (played by Jamie Dornan), then stop reading this and go do so now. Anderson plays Stella Gibson, an English DI who is brought to Belfast to stop the series of murders of young professional women that have been occurring in the city. The Fall has been celebrated for the fact that Anderson plays a character who is almost always male. She is extremely focused (and good at) her job, sees sex as a primarily casual habit, and doesn’t have the most robust of personal lives.

Anderson’s nuanced performance makes Stella a strong and sympathetic character — one who is deeply affected by the way that men take out their anger and frustrations out on women, and who knows how to navigate a world and professional space riddled with misogyny and casual sexism. Anderson has called Stella Gibson her favorite role, and it’s easy to see why. The actress is asked to do a lot in the BBC drama—and she more than steps up to the challenge.

Dana Scully in The Simpsons

Sure, this is really just a guest starring role on someone else’s TV show, but how could we not include at least one of Gillian Anderson’s animated turns? (She also appears briefly on Robot Chicken,as Fiona.) This X-Files spoof episode—”The Springfield Files”—comes in The Simpson’s eighth season and it is filled with in-jokes about the paranormal drama. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson basically just voice their characters, but — as A.V. Club‘s review notes — “Anderson is, if anything, even more restrained than she is on The X-Files, which makes her lines funnier.”

“The Springfield Files” is far from the best episode of The Simpsons, but it is another great example of the kind of range Anderson has. Sure, she may be playing another version of her most well-known character, but getting that same character across in voice work is far different from getting that character across on live-action TV. Anderson nails it.

Media in American Gods

Sadly, Gillian Anderson is no longer on American Gods, which has suffered a series of high-profile “departures” that began with the “exit” of showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green before Season 2. But we will always have one season of Anderson as Media, the mouthpiece of the New Gods, in this Starz adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s bestselling novel. As Media takes on the form of various celebrities and lives off the worship people give to their various screens, we got to see Anderson transform herself into people like Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball, and David Bowie—a smorgasbord of eclectic Anderson performances all in one show! For one season, we truly were blessed.

Jean Milburn in Sex Education

For a show that is mostly about The Youths, Anderson certainly makes her presence felt in Netflix’s British dramedy Sex Education. Anderson plays Jean Milburn, a single mom to teen protagonist Otis (Asa Butterfield), and a sex therapist. When Otis somewhat accidentally shares some of the sex education his mother has been feeding him presumably for his entire adolescence to a school bully, he falls into the sex advice business, helping his classmates with their sexual struggles. As Jean, Anderson gets to be both wise and neurotic, a mother and not defined by it. She also gets to regularly deliver lines like: “Why don’t you start by telling me your earliest memory of your scrotum.” Honestly, we deserve this show and its brilliant casting of Gillian Anderson.

Anna Pavlovna in War & Peace

Still have room for one more Gillian Anderson-starring period drama? (You know you do.) In this lush yet somewhat soulless 2016 adaptation of Tolstoy’s tome, Anderson plays “glittering society hostess” Anna Pavlovna. Written by period adaptation master Andrew Davies and directed by Peaky Blinders‘ Tom Harper and featuring a cast that also includes Paul Dano, Lily James, and James Norton, War & Peace has a lot going for it even if it never fully capitalizes on its deep reserves of talent and, honestly, with such an expansive cast and Anderson in a supporting role, our fave only gets a small amount of screen time. But, per the usual, Anderson steals the show.

Hugh Dancy Biography from the BBC 'Daniel Deronda' website.

It was the scope of his role as the eponymous hero of George Eliot's passionate love story, adapted for BBC One by award-winning Andrew Davies, which initially attracted Hugh. "I've read the book - a long time before I got the script - and my residual memory from that was the breadth of the story. And Daniel covers that whole story - it is, in a sense, his story, the progression that he goes through and what he learns about himself." It was at Oxford, where he read English Language and Literature, that Hugh first discovered the character he would one day bring to life on screen. "I read it perhaps with less attention than the novel actually deserves," He confesses, a twinkle in his pool-deep, blue-grey eyes. "I was horrified when I went back to look at it again, to remember how quickly I read it the first time, because its not a novel that you can approach light-heartedly. That's not to say it's a heavy story, but its involving and engaging. Its a roller-coaster."

Daniel, explains Hugh, is a young man aware of how little he knows about himself. "He's incorporated that into his understanding of who he is in the world and he's covered it up, its like a pain thats hidden. What you see during the course of the story is him unfolding and opening up, from being a relatively closed person to somebody who sees all the potential that lies in front of him." "Her intelligence in her novels is so strong that you can't help but feel that youre being addressed on an intellectual level," he muses. "But, when you strip that away, the stories themselves are very human, very emotional, and that's what comes through in the adaptation. "I remember watching the BBCs Middlemarch and thinking that even the dry and intellectual character of Casaubon was nonetheless treated as a very real human being: and the same is true of Daniel Deronda. He continues: "Everybody knows that if you adapt a novel for television or for the screen, youre involved in a work of translation and, like any kind of translation, youre going to have a different product at the end. But with Andrew Davies attached, and other people who were involved with Middlemarch [including producer Louis Marks], they're not about to introduce some theme that isn't there. Nor are they going to split it down the middle and just keep the nice bits. "You have to have faith in the original work of art, and they have. A lot of our discussions when we were on set would involve going back to the book, because you have this perfect blueprint." The magnetic appeal of period drama on the small screen is three-fold, believes the dark-haired young actor, who stands just a sliver under 6 ft. "There's a huge body of classics out there and nobody's read them all," he declares. "So, if you haven't read it, its a nice way in and, if you have read it, there's a kind of curiosity. "There's also an escapist quality to the classics; they open up beautiful worlds. There's a wealth of brilliant stories, created at a time when we didn't have television or film, so the primary form of regular family entertainment came from these writers. Its like a bank vault full of opportunity." Hugh, who also starred in the BBCs Madame Bovary [with Hugh Bonneville] and Dangerfield, Ridley Scott's Hollywood blockbuster 'Black Hawk Down' and Sam Mendes's play 'To The Green Fields Beyond' at Londons Donmar Warehouse, first fell under the spell of the spotlight when he was a 13-year-old schoolboy. "Like a lot of people, I just practically stumbled into a theatre and somebody gave me something to do. The next thing, that was what I was doing all the time and I loved it. Then I went to university instead of going to drama school, which was a conscious and deliberate choice. The main jump then is to be able to do it professionally and thankfully I was lucky.. After I left university I met an agent who took me on with the caveat that if it wasn't working after a certain amount of time, wed part ways - but it went fine." As the son of a Professor of Philosphy, Hugh, who has a younger brother and sister, might have been expected to take the road to academia. "My father's an academic and both of my grandfathers taught Classics. It's something to do with being the eldest son, but I reacted quite strongly against that world quite early on and I didn't want to go into it. "From 13 through to 18, in a traditional adolescent way, I couldn't understand what my father was doing. Now I respect it immensely. But I still don't think Id be cut out for it." Hugh is adept at such tongue-twisting accents as Scots, Welsh, South African and the Southern States of America, among others. "My only theory about that is that I was brought up in the Midlands, coming from a family who broadly originate from the south of England, so while I was there I was very much the kid with a slightly out-of-place accent. Then, when I was 10, I went to boarding school in the south, having by that time developed quite a strong Midlands accent which, in turn, I had to defensively smooth out in order to fit in. And I think if you do that kind of thing at an early age, you kind of develop an ear for it." Much of the filming for Daniel Deronda took place in stately homes. "So the majority of people were completely blasé because theyd seen it all before - film sets and film crews come and go," says Hugh. And he reveals: "For a few days we were at Wrotham Park in Hertfordshire, where Robert Altmans Oscar-winning Gosford Park was filmed, and I realised they were only ever filming in one direction in the hallway - because on the other side of the hall were paintings so famous that people would have realised they were from the wrong period." Soon to be seen in the thriller Tempo with Melanie Griffith, Hugh is currently filming in Dublin for his next role in the movie Ella Enchanted, a traditional fairy tale with a slightly more modern slant, which Hugh believes is aimed at Shrek audiences. "It's set in a fairy-tale kingdom and buys into that whole fantasy world, but its a bit tongue-in-cheek as well," he explains. Some filming for the drama took place in Malta. The searing, 40-degree heat was a tourists paradise, but for Hugh it was location hell. "It was absolutely baking," says Hugh. "It was about 40 on the hottest day. And, of course, the Maltese know what side their breads buttered - they all go to sleep between 1 and 3, but not the British. It's the old saying - mad dogs and Englishmen and film crews!" To preserve his fair complexion for his 19th-century role, Hugh wasn't allowed to get a tan. "So the rest of the crew were there, stripped to the waist, and Rom (co-star Romola Garai) and I were larded up with sun cream and big hats. It was very frustrating."
