How an animated series saved Remy LeBeau (again)
Tumblr media
It's a bit of a hyperbolic title, but catchy, non?
I was looking over my comic collection as I've decided to reread X-Men's 60 year history over the course of the summer. And it got me thinking about a dead period of 616 canon that I've never actually read. Around the time Rogue hooked up with Magneto and scooted off to the Avengers, I decided I'd be done with comics for a while. And didn't start again until Rogue (and Gambit) came back to the X-books in 2017's Astonishing X-Men. But it made me wonder -- What happened to Gambit in that time??
Well, after his solo ended, he flitted around to X-Factor and hung out with X-23 and then kind of went 'poof' for a good long while.
Why? I can only guess the same reason this is a running motif with Gambit. There's something about him that drives the X-Office crazy. I'm not here to speculate what or how or who of it all. I don't know enough about the back end of Marvel to give concrete answers. But I think what has surprised me (recently) is that he's definitely a fan favorite character.
[Yes, I know he can be a divisive character. Yes, I know elements of his character from the 90s have not aged well. Yes, I know there are those of you who can't stand him. Don't really care - you can get off my lawn, thank you.]
Which got me thinking -- Gambit's original popularity, I believe, stemmed from the original X-Men Animated Series. He had just started showing up in the comics at the time, and had barely any kind of page time. And the X-Men TAS swung and was a hit. And so was Gambit.
I don't really know that Gambit would be around today if TAS hadn't done its thing. Would the X-Office have kept him around? I really have no idea.
But they did try to get rid of him. That was the point of leaving him in Antarctica. And things were just never the same after that. Claremont tried his best in the early 2000s. And then Deathbit happened. Carey's run wasn't bad. But Carey clearly had an agenda for other things... And then, Gambit just kind of faded into the background. (I hear his run as a side character for Laura (X-23) was good - but I haven't read that.)
Bless Kelly Thompson (always) for sparking life back into him with (and his relationship with Rogue). And bless the fact that she actually married him to Rogue. Yes, I understand comics -- my god look what they did to Peter and MJ, no one really gets to be happily married except Sue and Reed. He and Rogue are now really tied together in a way that I don't think is going to be undone any time soon.
Even if the X-Office still isn't thrilled with the guy. Krakoa era has been less than ideal. (I can't comment on it fully - I haven't read much of it, as I'm behind on my comic reading.) But I've heard rumors that one reason Thompson was let go was that she didn't want Gambit killed off. And she didn't like the direction they wanted to take the character.
Which leads me to X-Men 97. Killing him off sucked. Really. As a fan, it really sucked. But - my god, the reaction to it. Gambit was amazing. And all I've heard lately is good things about the character. There's been a Gambit resurgence in the best way. He may have went out -- but he went out with a bang. X-Men 97 made an emotional impact with people. And that changes things.
Gambit is cool again.
And I love it.
What's even more exciting is the fact that the X-Office has changed hands again and Gail Simone on Uncanny who (if her Twitter/X feed is to be believed) is really enjoying writing the character. Which means (hopefully) at least another year or two in the comics of some (hopefully) great Gambit stuff.
And maybe there will be some changing of hearts and minds in the X-Office.
It's actually very exciting.
And, guys, I really (really, really) doubt he'll be completely gone from X-Men 97, too.
Because Remy LeBeau never stays down for long.
But as a fan, it's nice to see him be on top again. And I don't think he's going anywhere anytime soon.

Here's something cute for you, don't mind me I just had this scene in my head and wanted to share it =3
It was quiet in the new hotel, everyone had returned to their new rooms after a long day. Charlie kicked off her shoes to release her red hooves, sitting down on a chair as she rubs her ankle. "I don't know how she does it managing this place. I can't feel my hooves from all the work I had to do." The princess sighed removing her red jacket and setting it on the chair she was sitting on.
Charlie smiled a little at the photo of her and Vaggie on the nightstand. "Vaggie said she needed the day off but wouldn't say why..." The blonde leaned back thinking of her beautiful angel girlfriend. Though those thoughts were interrupted when Razzle wandered over holding a box. "Whatcha got there?" Charlie blinked tilting her head as she noticed a small note ontop of it.
"Baaap!" Razzle gleefully handed his mistress the box letting her read the note before scurrying off again.
"I saw this and figured you'd look really nice in it, so wear it for me and come to the new courtyard. Love Vaggie." Charlie read the note aloud and blushed. Her excitement grew when she undid the ribbon on the box and looked inside. "Oh wow!"
Inside was a rather nice maroon colored suit, with black cuffs and matching slacks as well. Charlie smiled softly, seeing the beautiful little pin on top of the garment. It was an apple with grey wings. "Better not keep her waiting." She smirked with a cute squee.
Once dressed, Charlie made her way down to the back of the hotel, which had a beautiful new courtyard that her father Lucifer had designed with the pin attached to her coat. Her eyes wandered around, taking in the gorgeous scenery as roses of all colors bloomed alongside some plants from all over Hell. Though what made her eyes go wide was past the beautiful rose arch.
It was a beautifully set up romantic dinner, and most of all, Charlie's eyes landed on the gorgeous angel standing by the table, looking rather shyly. Vaggie smiled at her though the outfit she wore was just breathtaking, the dress matched Charlie's suit with its lovely maroon, and black motif with it being a backless dress so her wings could pop out if she wanted to. "Surprise hon... Do you like it?" The woman replied as Charlie looked at her stunned.
"Oh wow... Y-you did all this?" Charlie shook her head to regain composure. She clearly must've been staring for too long since Vaggie had a darker shade of blush tinting her dusky cheeks. "Vaggie it's so wonderful, thank you." Charlie beamed walking over.
Razzle scurried over as the little goat demon poured the two some sparkling apple cider. "Well, I can't exactly lie to save my life, so I had to keep you busy somehow." Vaggie giggled as she and Charlie sat down at the table. "So I enlisted some help." She smiled a bit at Razzle, who politely bowed.
"And here I thought you wanted a break love?" Charlie smirked playfully, since this romantic dinner did take a lot of work.
"Hon this is my break. I get to have a date with the women I love." Vaggie replied sharing an equally as playful smile.
Charlie couldn't help but blush at that cute smile, she always loved it when her girlfriend smiled. Though she was curious at how Vaggie pulled this off without her noticing, then she noticed Razzle wheeling in their dinner, a delicious turkey feast. "You had Razzle do most of it didn't you?" She chuckled as Vaggie nodded.
"Only some things like cooking and setting up." The angel replied brushing some hair away. "I went into town to find the outfits for tonight."
"You chose Maroon because it blends yours and my favorite colors, right?" Charlie giggled since she did like red and pink while Vaggie was more so a purple kind of girl. "And this?" She motioned to the pin.
"I had your dad's help with that one." Vaggie stated as around her neck was the same one but in necklace form. "He seemed thrilled about it."
Charlie rolled her eyes but smiled. "I like the fact we're matching now with these. I'll treasure it always, my beautiful angel." Her voice sounded loving and sweet with a soft purr. Vaggie couldn't help but blush at that.
The two talked and enjoyed their dinner as soon Vaggie finished and stood. Her stride elegant from her training with Carmilla Carmine. "Care to dance with mi amor?" Her gaze soft as pink looked into red.
"I'd love to, but babe, where's the music?" Charlie chuckled standing up and taking Vaggie's hand. She then looked over as Razzle sped back over with a CD player and turned it on before leaving the girls alone again. "Well that answers my question."
With the soft tempo, the two began to waltz. Of course, Charlie slightly fumbled it, but Vaggie made sure she didn't fall. It felt like nothing else was there in Hell as the two moved around the beautiful greenery of the garden. Charlie smirked and twirled her small girlfriend, making the angel laugh. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you love to dance?" She giggled noticing how fluent her girlfriend was.
"Couldn't exactly find the right partner before to do this with. So I was often alone back up in heaven..." Vaggie's fell slightly but perked back up again when Charlie lifted her up. "Whoa hey!"
Charlie smirked and playfully set Vaggie back down before kissing her angel on the cheek. "You're not alone anymore, though. So please don't hesitate if you ever want to go dancing ok? I'd love to be your dance partner." The princess smiled nuzzling her girlfriend.
Vaggie couldn't help but stay close as the tempo of the music granted her the slow dance. "Oh Charlie... Thank you." She leaned into her taller girlfriend's chest, smiling. "I feel more at home down here with you than I'd ever had back up there."
The princess felt heat rise to her cheeks again but smirked as the music picked up the beat again. "I'm glad, and can I tell you a little secret?" She playfully dipped Vaggie, who yelped in surprise. "You're the only one who makes me feel so free and safe. My title, my parents, none of it changed your view of me." She started leading the dance as she spoke, making Vaggie a little stunned. Charlie lifted Vaggie up again, smiling the biggest grin. "You supported my dreams and even gave me feedback on them too. You lifted me up when I felt sad or lonely, and above it all, you saw me for me." Vaggie blushed harder than ever as she was perched in those loving arms staring down at her loving princess.
"Charlie..." Vaggie started but couldn't find the words.
"How in hell did I get such a strong, hot, and wonderful girlfriend is beyond me. But I do know I love her more than anything." Charlie giggled as she then blinked her eyes sparkling as her angel spread her wings while wearing the brightest shade of golden blush on her face. The princess saw those wings shimmer in Hell's light as she smiled letting her own demonic form peek through as red horns and a long black tail came out.
Vaggie watched those eyes shift from ruby red to a bright yellow and smiled. "I love you too, mi amor.." She leaned down cupping Charlie's cheek with her hand and planted a kiss on those beautiful lips.
The two remained like that for awhile until Vaggie moved back and lovingly held those cheeks. However she noticed that beautiful devilish glint in those eyes. "I think I'll show you my surprise then, shall we return to our room?" Charlie giggled and shifted around so she'd have Vaggie in her arms princess carry style. "I think you'll love it."
"Whatever it is, I think I might." Vaggie chuckled cuddling her girlfriend as the two came back to the bedroom. Though Vaggie was confused when Charlie didn't immediately squish her into their mattress. She watched her princess put her down on the comfy bed and move to the vanity. "Hmm?"
Charlie looked nervous as her tail twitched, but she gulped and pulled something out from the drawer. She soon walked over with a loving yet nervous smile. Vaggie tilted her head as Charlie whispered to herself, "You can do this." And proceeded to kneel down to the beautiful angel on the bed. "Vaggie... Would you.. Do me the honors of becoming my queen? My... Wife?" Charlie presented her a ring. It was golden with a vine motif and a brilliant apple center fixated with what looked to be an amythst.
Vaggie gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. Tears began to form as she just tackled Charlie. "Yes, I'd love to, hon!" She replied making Charlie beam and also start to cry.
"Hey I nearly dropped the ring silly! At least let me slip it onto you first!" She was laughing and a sobbing mess. Vaggie moved back enough to let Charlie slip the ring onto her finger as the two giggled. "I never knew I could get this happy."
"Me neither mi amor..." Vaggie then pulled Charlie in for a deep kiss. The latter returned it equally as it became passionate. The two slipped onto the bed as their night had just began.
(And cut! Hope you guys enjoy my Chaggie fic! I've seen stuff where Vaggie teaches Charlie to dance and where she also gives Charlie a ring too. Made me squee and want to try my hand at it.)

*poke poke* hey. Hey. Since you have overture on the brain, master ghost ideas for the other characters? Hmm??
Ohhh wow, now this is something we could be on all day, huh? So many options! So many opportunities to pick through a character and who they are.
-Dizzy is an easy start, I think. A counterpart to Ky. It's sort of like their treasures in Johnny's Xrd special being a family photo and a picture of Dizzy holding baby Sin. It'd be Ky holding him, or all of them together. Though since she has so much association with the Grove, instead of the church building imagery that Ky has in the detailing of his masterghost, hers would be more organic, trees and flowers and the like framing everything
-Also, let's give one to Sin! He can also have a lot of the same motifs, since he's young at the time a lot of it is more literal and self-centered because that's how a younger kid's mind works. It's a rather exaggerated depiction of himself, standing atop a mountain with a flag waving in victory. Dizzy gets a lot of focus as well, and Sol has an appearance too. You have to be very careful when looking, but if you poke your head in near the back, you can see Ky watching on too. Even if it's a less conscious part of his mind, Sin still loves his father and acknowledges him as part of his life
-As long as he's already here, too, let's give Raven his own one as well instead of having to share with Valentine. I feel his motifs are similarly easy, lots of gothic architecture and torture tools strewn about. The centerpiece is himself, mutilated and stabbed in several place, hanging from an upside-down crucifix. The inverted cross is commonly associated with other satanic motifs, like how Raven appears to be a violent individual whose fundamental existence goes against the natural order of nature, but in actuality, the symbol is related to martyrdom, specifically that of Apostle Peter, who felt unworthy being crucified in the same way as Jesus, tying into how Raven is ultimately a well-intentioned man who rejected being treated as a god.
-For some reason I want to do Axl next. Maybe just because he has a lot of obvious motifs as well. His is a little snapshot of home, similarly to how his stages have a lot of archetypical British motifs. Tall buildings, a clocktower, and a train cutting through the whole thing. All the components move, but they start and stop rather jarringly, like the playback is glitching out. Nothing is operating in synch, and none of the structures are quite 'correct,' being exaggerated echoes based on memory
-Might as well do I-no, too, though hers would be tricky. I could see most of it being shrouded in a veil of fog, being something not even she knows the true meaning of. Maybe it's in some sort of big fancy bottle, with the impression that it's going to be released and fulfill some grand potential someday, but in its present form it exists confined and limited. If you listen closely, sometimes you can hear something thumping against the walls...

Part 5 of "Breathe, everything will be fine"
Tumblr media

Masterlist: here
Abstract : The arrival of a dragon in the north is not common, Daemon on his back was even more surprising.
Pairing: Daemon x Fem Chubby reader
Edit : I just edited several errors and a paragraph doubled by errors I hope it will be more readable

The night was dark, clouds covered the sky, the light wind coming from the north took the cold of the wall to the castle, the window of your room was open, you looked outside. The branches of the trees moved in heart, only the torches of the guards illuminated the earth, the few distant houses had their lights off for several hours.
The serenity of the places allowed you to find a form of calm, you tried to recapitulate the past events, see where you could have been at fault, you tried to understand, but did not succeed completely. You tried not to mope about yourself, life went on and the future could be positive, you just had to believe strongly enough.
For several weeks you watched the arrival of heralds and crows, all were intercepted by the guards, you tried to read the messages, but Suzanne always found a way to get away from your objective, whether by taking you to another section of the castle to find books, or by going through the kitchens, offering you a new embroidery motif, etc. at a rare moment you heard your father shouting through the door leading to the great hall.
«Never!... Can... dream»
Watching the heralds, you could see that they were messengers from the capital. It was true that you no longer received crows from Daemon and that worried you. Not for yourself or that he has indeed manipulated you, but of a possible conflict that would be played out in the capital, because between the conflict north of the wall and another at King’s Landing, the north would have been torn.
Suzanne had you insured two days before, King’s Landing wasn’t in danger. The same morning she heard your parents talking in the large room after the visit of a first herald. According to her, their discussions were heated, the main cause being the prince.
“Apparently, the prince will ask for your hand, he has made several proposals.” Suzanne was focused on her embroidery, a shy smile on her lips.
"Really?" You were looking at Suzanne, both surprised and doubtful.
“Recently, the king himself would have sent messengers. Daemon would be visibly furious. That’s all I could hear.”
"Furious?"
"Who knows my lady, perhaps he is truly in love with you. You know the prince’s temperament better than anyone in this castle."
“He’s not unconscious either, Suzanne.”
“Perhaps your union will ease the trials between your two families?”
Suzanne had a point, you were hoping she was right.
That night, it was late when a noise came out of your contemplation, it seemed to you to be a great cry, it did not seem human to you, rather like a very big animal, much larger than the bears living in the forest bordering the castle. A few minutes later, a warm wind was felt, you looked out your window, the guards hurried out of the castle, the few servants still standing and outside entering the castle. When once again the roar was heard, this time you were looking in its direction, the darkness that reigned because of the cloudy sky, was illuminated in an instant, huge flames split the air. With wide eyes you watched the scene, a dragon passed in the north, it seemed for a long time that a dragon was so far in the north, from Aegon the conqueror if you remembered the writings of the books of Red Keep.
Your heart began to palpate, your hands became moist, your mouth dry, why would a dragon fly so far? The answer was quickly found when he landed, frightening the guards, armed with their swords, trembling but remaining in formation. A movement on the dragon made you observe it more assiduously, this form was humanoid, he rose from what seemed to be a saddle, he descended with ease from the animal. The form approached the guards and it was there that you could distinguish a hair, long and clear hair, a dragon with a long neck. It was to be none other than a certain prince.
Daemon came in person to the castle, your first reflex was to want to get out of your room, to be at his side. Placing your hand on the clinch of the door and opening it, you were greeted by Sir Geubert, standing in front of your room, his back was facing you.
"Stay inside your room lady Y/n. please." Sir Geubert was on his guard.
“Good.”
You closed the door, returning to your window, Caraxes was lying on the ground, his head staring at the guards, Daemon entered the castle accompanied by several knights of your house. But you were looking for an excuse to go out for any reason.
Your parents were awakened by servants, your father was bitterly hurried, your mother was wearing her dressing gown and a long robe adapted to the cold climate of the northern night.
The great hall, whose walls adorned with enormous stone block, was lit by a few torches, a fire was lit in haste. Daemon was standing in the room, looking around him, the walls were adorned with torches, some flags and tapestries in the colors of your house. The ceiling was adorned with a large chandelier made of wood from trees and deer, heavy candles were placed there. The lighting gave warm tones to the room, but the large shadows which the torches created brought a gloomy side to the place. If for you it was the house, for Daemon, the place was freezing.
The door opened revealing your father, dressing in dark trousers and a tunic with the main color of your family, resting on a shirt of an off-white. His features were drawn by lack of sleep, his gaze fell on the prince, he stared at him for several minutes. Before entering the room. Your father standing in front of the chair being dedicated to him at the big table, when he spoke.
"What are you doing here, Prince Daemon?" There was a kind of disdain in his voice.
“You know the answer to this question.”
“So you can parade around the city?  What did you put in her head?”
"What am I putting? Nothing that wasn’t there already."
"You have corrupted her!"
“Oh, I can’t be accused of that.”
Daemon was having fun with your father’s anger. But he was here for something more important, if he couldn’t use the same technique he used for his brother, he had to be more honest with your father. He had learned of the pride of the north, of their loyalty and courage, but all this could be eroded when honour was tainted.
“I came to marry Y/n." Daemon spoke calmly, too calmly.
"You will never have her hand!"
“If not me, who? Stark? His child is too young for her and the Lord is old. Bolton? Bastard who already humiliated her?! I’ll burn it alive. Oh maybe Baratheon? Or Lannister? Your house is too small for their own ambitions.”
Your father was furious from the inside, veins were beginning to appear/grown on his face.
“How many suitors showed interest? How many at least try to court her?”
Daemon was staring at your father, several times you had explained to him the arrangements between your family and others. How just one interview ended quickly, how young men hardly looked at you, rare were those who forced themselves to be kind, they did not see beyond their cock, Daemon often said to himself, they did not see what he saw. In the silence of your father Daemon resumed.
“How do you think she feels? Have you bothered to look beyond your own ambition?”
"This is my daughter!"
“What confuses your mind, although I see that there is not only a desire for power, you would have already accepted my demands.”
"She will not marry, a person of your family to degenerate! You Targaryens, the inbreds! Your line is doomed to the darkness of this world! But not her!"
Daemon will be fists, clenched his jaw. That he insulted him, but not his house.
“Even on my deathbed, you don’t marry her! I’d marry her to a peasant, you don’t! May she be happy or not!”
Daemon advanced with a fast and dangerous step, his hand resting on the knob of Dark sister. Knights were rushing to the door to intervene. But this did not bring back the anger that reigned in the room. Your father caught in his alas continued.
“What matters is that she has an heir! No matter who she marries, they just didn’t understand that it was just that! I don’t care if they go somewhere else! Get out of my house!"
Your father kept screaming, Daemon’s blood was bubbling in his veins, how could he speak so of you? He looked at the two guards in front of him, it would have been easy for him to disarm them, then he looked towards the open door, there were several knights posted there, he recognized this young knight whom he had beaten at the tournament and who was left beside you. Sir Gaubet? Goubert?
The gaze of Daemon was drawn by a round shape half hidden behind the knight, the prince’s anger was coming down at full speed, he had become worried. How long have you been a spectator? He was watching you, your eyes were red, your lower lip was shaking. The rage that Daemon felt began to multiply, you did not look at him, the wounded look was not intended for him, this look was intended for another man. Daemon turned to your father. As he was about to speak another voice interrupted him. A woman’s voice.
"Husband! That’s enough!"
Your mother had just entered the room, forcing you to enter.
"We shall speak again tomorrow, your words are foolish." She turned to the prince. “If you allow it, you will spend the night at the castle or you can still sleep with your dragon outside.”
Daemon turned to the door and walked towards it, he approached you, his gaze had softened while watching you, but you ran away not paying attention to those around you. Geubert left after you, Daemon followed him closely, the others could fuck off, you were important to him. Far more important than you could have imagined, Westeros could burn if it allowed him to be by your side.
The end of the night was agitated, Geubert kept your door, preventing the prince from approaching you, which enraged the prince.
“I know you’re loyal to this house, but she doesn’t need a guard.”
“How can you know what she wants or needs?”
The sound of the door opening made them turn in this direction.
"Sir Geubert, they will know nothing, let him in."
“They will know at some point.”
“You’re not going to the night watch.”
“That’s not my concern, Lady Y/N.”
“Please.” Your voice was just a whisper
“Very good.”
Sir Geubert shifted, letting Daemon into your room. He sighed, this situation hurt him, he didn’t want anything bad to happen to you. He wouldn’t forgive himself.
Your room was changing from the apartments in King’s Landing, it was much smaller, but large enough to have organized a full-foot wardrobe, a table where there were several heavy books, an oak chair engraved on the feet. A fairly large window adorned with a thick and dark curtain, to are opposite was a small chimney, from which embers slowly lighted the ground near. Two carpets covered the floor with wood, one near the table and the other covering the floor near your bed. This one was large, covered with several pillows as well as heavy blankets and fur.
You were standing in the middle of the room. Daemon looked at you, his heart was palpitating. Several months had passed since that night. Didn’t have time to talk to you properly, had any news. You were the first to break the stillness of the moment by placing your arms around his torso and placing your head against his torso. He hastened to hold you against him,
“I was so worried, I didn’t hear from you…”
"I have sent you many crows," he placed his hands on your face, raising your head towards him.
“They must have intercepted them…”
With his thumb he began to caress your cheek, smiling at you, finally you were reunited. Looking at him you could see the Daemon you knew, the soft look, a smile you never want him to go from his lips. In the great hall you could only witness the cries of your father and his hurtful words. A moment of doubt settled in you.
"Why do you want to marry me?" Your words were barely whispered, you were surprised when Daemon answered you.
"Do you still not know? Or is it their words that cloud your mind? I love you Y/n. He laid his forehead against yours. “Avy jorrāelan tolī than mirros else isse se vys”
“I love you too, Daemon.”
Your words were so simple to say to him, his few words gave you the impression of having less weight on your shoulders, your lips were gently touching before a kiss was exchanged. It was as if time had not passed since the tournament. You placed a hand in her hair, one of his hands came down from your face and into the hollow of your kidneys. Seconds are minutes, minutes are hours. Still dressed, you sat on the bed, your head against his chest, you listened to him talk about his last weeks at the Red Keep, how he had made the decision to see you against his brother’s advice.
"Fuck the lords, they think what they want."
You fall asleep in his arms, the sound of his voice relaxing you enough to be able to sleep.
It was the rays of the sun that woke you, in the mist between sleep and awakening, you felt a mass around your bust. You gently raised your head and saw an arm, following his arm, you noticed long silver wire against your shoulder. Daemon had spent the night at your side. You turned slowly and gently, to face him. His facial features were relaxed, his breathing calm, his hair was on the pillow, giving your pillow y/f/c silver tones. Daemon was undressing during the night leaving himself only in trousers.
You put your hand against one of his shoulders, the warmth that Daemon gave off, contrasted with the sweet morning ice break. Slowly, you began to caress his shoulder with your fingertips, rising very slowly towards his neck, then his cheek. You didn’t want to wake him up, since the time you imagined waking up with him, you wanted this moment to last as long as possible.
This was without counting on Suzanne and Sir Geubert.
Suzanne knocked on the door, it was time to prepare for the day to come, Sir Geubert was the first to open the door, hand on the knob of his sword. The sound of the door awakened Daemon, who jumped up.
"Sir Geubert?" You looked at the knight, worried.
“Your servant arrived, The prince better get out before there are more servants in the halls.” Geubert was on the defensive.
Daemon, hair tangled, looked at the knight, a mixture of disdain and fatigue.
“He’s not wrong, Daemon…”
"Fuck the servants."
“I know… but let’s not have accusations…please.” You looked at Daemon with all the sweetness that anything could show her.
Daemon sighed, grabbing his shirt and shoes, he got dressed and started leaving your room not without a kiss on your forehead.
The night was not great advice for your father, he continued to rant during the interview with Daemon, your mother was present too.
You were in the hallway leading to the big room, sitting on one of the benches there. One of your legs was shaking, you were looking at the door closed, Suzanne kept you company, embroidering and trying to reassure you with her words. But it did not help you, no words beyond the door were audible, nothing could predict whether what was being played would be good or bad.
Many of the knights posted at the door and in the corridor could see very clearly, the anxiety that was gnawing at you, many felt bad for you, they knew how your father was.
It was only in the early afternoon that the door was opened, you stood up with your hands clasped in the centre of your chest.
Sir Reinfrid, who was inside, looked at you and shook his head, they couldn’t come to an agreement.
It was outside the castle that you found Daemon, He was observing the landscape that you were so familiar with. You’re taking a step back, not wanting to be too much on him.
“I want to marry you according to the Valyrian tradition, no one can contradict our union.”
Daemon had begun to speak, always looking at the horizon. Your heart began to beat faster, you approached him, placing one hand on his shoulder. Daemon turned towards you, pushing a hand on your cheek.
“Let’s go, we’ll go wherever you want, Caraxes can take us away from Westeros if that’s what you want.”
“Daemon…”
“Be my wife.”
Daemon’s voice was tender, it is true that you wanted above all to be at his side, but your family was also important. Daemon took you in his arms, you could smell him, it relaxed you. The decision was not easy to make, but he filled you in a way that no one could do it that you listened to your heart rather than reason. You agreed.
In no time, you and Daemon found yourself in front of Caraxes and before you even understood it, you were on the back of the dragon, Daemon in front of you, holding the Carax straps. The takeoff was fast, you were holding on to Daemon, trying not to scream, your heart beating so fast that you thought it would explode. The cold north wind pricked your face, you buried it in his back.
You didn’t notice that beneath you, as you left the shimmering room, knights galloped towards the castle, the Stark standard floating.

pagan min as a dragon.............this idea has been in my head for so long i’ve got like prototype pagan dragons and shit but this is my final design for him
if you want to see me go in-depth about him for reasons that are related to mental illness (i have it and it is his fault) there is more :)
okay so. i’m going to explain his entire design since it makes me happy and i’m going to start with the colors
obviously he’s super flashy and extravagant in canon so i couldn’t just Not let that cross over here. i tried to make him look like a living rainbow without actually making him a rainbow BUT i do have my reasons for each of the colors.
the golden orange-y and yellow parts are obviously, well, to represent gold and the fact that he is ummmmmmm Technically royalty despite stealing the throne? the combination of blue on gold is relative to the golden path and how he and ishwari were a thing yada yada . red is for the primary color his army wears and for lakshmana because her whole shrine is decked out in the color red and pink is for his lovely suit:)
...i couldn’t make it that vibrant pink his suit actually is or it wouldn’t have fit as well into the rest of the colors. also. all the colors are taken off the rakshasa pagan thingy but i gave them meaning to make it fancier ++++ it wasn’t my intention but the way his colors fade into each other reminds me of all the colorful ?dust (i don’t know what it is. is it just powder) in far cry 4 so that makes me happy
speaking of rakshasa pagan, the other parts of his design are very much based off of it. specifically, the bird one in shangri-la. i included the way pagan’s rakshasa face looks as best as i could but the rest of the little intricate details i all sponged off of the bird, like the armor and the crown and the huge talons. the crown i felt especially needed to be included if nothing else bc well. y’know LMAO
the vaguely peacock-looking feathers are because that seems to be his motif for himself and his army and kyrat or whatever tf i don’t really know. all i know is i see peacocks associated with him and BAM he gets some pretty feathers
p.s. ik the pose is weird in that image let’s all hold hands and pretend that he’s climbing down from something
Tumblr media
okay bear with me . the wing size might be inconsistent but shhh don’t look at that it isn’t there also thanks to tumblr for maybe tanking the quality of these (we’ll see) . ANYWAY
he gets multiple limbs because of the golden statues (or statue singular? is there just one? i haven’t played it but god i want to) that are in his dlc and it gives me another reason to stretch the definition of “dragon” which is always super fun for me :)
his face is mostly immobile aside from being able to blink and breathe and close/open his mouth but it’s like his jaw is on hinges with the way it can only move up and down (and stiffly) because i want it to really feel like he’s got a mask on or something. like if you look at the rakshasa bird its face isn’t all that. mobile. it is made of some kind of metal i think and i tried to mimic that effect + the idea of his mask in the dlc
another p.s.! let’s all keep holding hands and pretending . this time he’s landing after flying. he doesn’t normally stand on two feet
Tumblr media
his wings are heavy to the point that his front legs can’t really support him properly sometimes even though he’s got two pairs, so he often uses his wings as support to walk like how wyverns do. he feels like it’s inconvenient because he doesn’t want to get his feathers dirty and without a beak/easy way to close his mouth it’s annoying for him to preen them but that’s just an L he has to take
Tumblr media
and this is just him flying 4 literally no reason. i struggle drawing animals/beings that have wings in flight (and also i struggle with the tucked-in legs that come with those) so i wanted to see if i could. i think it turned out okay? maybe
i hope this made sense and that i wasn’t totally incoherent about this! thank you for reading (if you did) (and perhaps expect more dragons... i’m a big fan of them lol)

Arcane Detail Dive: Shape in the Stone
I will do another long-ass episode analysis post, I promise, but in the meantime, here are some little details from the opening credits that I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time dwelling on.
Spoilers for season 1 of Arcane: League of Legends. Warning for Flashing GIFs below the cut
Edited to fix my stupid typos and added ALT text.
Tumblr media
Bless the internet for allowing us to see the various cool alternative concepts for the Arcane opening credits. I will readily admit it took me a minute to love the one that we ended up with instead. A number of different ideas were put forward, but the essential focus in all of them remains the same: meeting our characters up close. Inside about a minute, we need to get a sense of who these people are.
For an animated show with such flash and fluidity of motion, the intro is surprisingly static. We are given these momentary snapshots of our characters in near-stillness, the “camera” doing the motion instead. It’s not totally clear what material these models are made of. At first it looks like it might be stone. But when the light shifts, we can see crosshatching and scrape marks as if someone has lovingly moulded them from clay. No one is immovable, unchangeable; and like any narrative worth its salt, everyone ends the season somewhere different than where they started.
The thing that struck me most — and I didn’t really connect the dots as to why until the end of season 1 — is how differently Powder and Viktor are represented compared to everyone else.
Tumblr media
Powder stands back to back with her sister. She is this nebulous stone shape until the camera pans over Vi’s shoulder. Only when the light shifts from pink to blue and Vi’s face is cast in total shadow is Powder’s face rendered clearly, fading slowly into view. Though they are back to back, Powder’s gaze is aimed at Vi. Looking for guidance that never comes. We first meet Powder when she is still in the stages of becoming herself and it is only in the absence of Vi that her personality is formed and solidified, for better or worse. Powder becomes Jinx. Even though the sisters are physically joined, like they are carved from the same piece of whatever, already they are being set apart.
Tumblr media
I also really love the little overlay flashes we see, a motif that repeats throughout the series when Jinx is dealing with her inner turmoil. Her relationship with Vi and its breakdown is the thing that most shapes her. One of the textures you can see (for like a whole 2 frames) is a film negative — and how fucking great a visual metaphor is that for Jinx’s maladaptive memory? The more you play a negative (or revisit a memory while in the throes of mental illness), the more distorted it becomes, and eventually it will degrade and become unwatchable. Or at the very least, nothing like it was before. Once the damage is done, it’s done, even if the underlying intent was positive.
Following the quiet stillness of Jayce studying the hex crystal, we next meet Viktor in more rapid fashion.
Tumblr media
Like Powder, Viktor begins indistinct. In short, staggered bursts he is chiselled into detail; perhaps one for each arc of the season, each definitive change that shapes him. Discovering hextech, his death sentence and the resulting desperation, his glorious and awful transmutation. I think it’s interesting though that his feet remain part of the stone. The shape of him isn’t fully clear. Viktor undergoes vast changes in season 1, physically and mentally… but of course, he isn’t done yet.
Look at the way the light shifts and passes over him so quickly too. In seconds, we see him in so many different lights in a way no other character is portrayed here. I think it’s a brilliant representation of the speed at which his mind works, of the way he can at turns be both impulsive and considered.
Tumblr media
We will come to know Viktor and Jayce as partners, but from the get-go they are painted in opposition. The stillness and blue hues of Jayce’s introduction are abruptly contrasted with the warmer coloured light and speed of Viktor’s. There are so many opposites in these brief glimpses alone. We’re so close up on Jayce we can’t even see his whole face, just his unwavering gaze on the crystal, whereas with Viktor we’re zoomed out and can see the whole picture. And what an indicator that is of the differing perspectives they have. Jayce deals with the thing that’s right in front of him at any given moment and probably dwells too long on the wrong thing; Viktor is a ruminator who thinks big-picture. And what he’s studying in this intro is Jayce’s notebook. Wherever their narratives end up, we know for sure that they will be in some way intertwined.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unlike all the others in this sequence, Powder and Viktor begin formless. They are the characters who undergo the most significant changes, who have (I would argue) the most harrowing personal journeys to contend with in season 1. They don't arrive with the certainty of, say, Heimerdinger or Mel who both appear solid and sure.
Tumblr media
Honourable shout-out to this shot of Caitlyn also. Shifting from the shadows of her privileged ignorance and literally being enlightened by the redness that is often coded with Vi. You love to see it. As with this fresco there is far more depth to Cait than first appears.
I'll be interested to see if and how the intro might change for season 2...

MfLDoP #3 - Inland Empire
Not the Disco Elysium skill, the David Lynch and Laura Dern film!
@sev-wildfang and I sat down together this evening to watch it. We were unsure at the beginning - still finding our footing in its tonal and technical idiosyncrasies - but soon we got extremely into it, and both left it saying it may be our new favourite movie.
Having recovered from the adrenaline rush, jury’s kind of out on that until I give it a rewatch. What I do know is that it’s my new favourite thing Lynch has participated in - moreso even than Twin Peaks.
More under the cut - spoilers throughout.
Inland Empire may just be Peak Lynch for me. Here is where his work culminated, and from here, it scatters out again. Having seen Twin Peaks: The Return earlier in the pandemic, I loved a lot of what it was doing, but felt it was bogged down by its connections to what came before, as self-aware and critical as it was about them. Sev said it after our watch - Inland Empire is free of any sequel baggage, it gets to be itself: Self-contained and decently long, but not so long that it becomes drawn-out.
There is a lot to love about Inland Empire’s cinematography - at least if you can take that kind of thing for what it is, not what it’s “supposed” to be. For one, the frame rate of the version we watched was unedited: The film was 60 FPS, which was immediately noticeable in a perturbing way.
Being shot on 2000s-era digital cameras, a constant air of hyperreality sat on everything: It felt like we were looking at a documentary, or at somebody’s wedding recordings - not a film. It felt more real than Lynch’s movies ever did, and that’s what made it horrifying.
Usually, you get to pat yourself on the back a bit, after viewing a Lynch film, and say: “Nothing this nightmarish could ever happen in the real world. People don’t act like that.” That, of course, is a lie we tell ourselves to be able to stash away the discomfort over very real problems often featured in those films- But for a hard-to-describe reason, seeing the characters and their perturbing actions displayed in 60 FPS, and with the aesthetic of a home video, puts them in a different, more immediate light.
Speaking of light: An important motif in the movie. It’s frequently used to determine era, location, mood, psychological space and otherwise. Hell, near the end, somebody is shot with a gun that shoots light - not as in a laser, but as in a spotlight that manages to kill a character.
Another thing that lent the film more flavour, and I think improved it for me, was some of the stage-like set designs featured in it, as well as the fact that it, unlike most other David Lynch-directed movies, didn’t exclusively take place in the U.S. Something about seeing European actors on-screen speak a European language (Polish), and some scenes - apparently - being shot in a European city made it all less drab and uniform, stand out from the others. Lynch’s Americana is nice and all, but it’s good to know that he has - at one point at least - done something else, too.
Laura Dern’s performance was intense! Not exactly nuanced, but very intense. Often, she was just reacting to things, and her face-acting for those close-ups was pretty challenging, if occasionally excessive. The coolest stuff from an acting perspective is mostly front-loaded in the movie, when she, playing Nikki Grace, plays a character as Nikki Grace. Lying while lying is always tough; she does it pretty well, and even later when her performance turns more reactive, it occasionally returns.
Plot was this movie’s least interesting aspect - at least what was intelligible of it on a first watch. The usual skewed portrayal of women rears its head, sudden violence, ableism... It’s more subdued than in other Lynch movies, but it’s still there in parts of the plot, and as elsewhere, it’s been used by Lynch so frequently that it becomes hard to know whether he is condemning or reveling in what he’s portrayed.
Finally, the ending it left us with was... interesting? In a strange way, it felt like what we were seeing was a happy end, though why we felt a sense of closure from it, neither Sev and I could - at first - say. The ending felt pleasant, and like an appropriate come-down after the tour-de-force before it.
Absolutely would recommend.

New Star Trek book review!
Diane Duane is one of the only people I trust with Spock’s character. Besides Original Series writer Dorothy Fontana and Leonard Nimoy himself, nobody else captures Spock in the way I see him. So obviously Duane’s novel Spock’s World is essential reading for me.
This book takes a very literal approach to the title, splitting its time between the present day plot and an account of Vulcan’s history going as far back to the literal formation of the planet. The “Enterprise” plotline focuses on the current tensions on Vulcan, whose government is teetering on the edge of seceding from the Federation. Each chapter of the “Vulcan” plotline follows people (all implied to be Spock’s ancestors) living during critical points in Vulcan’s history, from the planet’s genesis to Spock’s birth.
It was really interesting to see Duane’s take on Vulcan’s history. We don’t know much from canon besides the fact that Vulcan’s history was very war-torn until Surak’s philosophies of logic and embracing diversity caught on. In my head, I always imagined that following Surak’s teachings allowed the Vulcans to finally reconcile their differences and work together to achieve all of their technologies and space travel. But Duane posits that Vulcan had already developed many advanced technologies and was using them for intraspecies destruction long before Surak. It was these technologies’ horrifying power that jolted Surak awake and inspired his future teachings. Duane also claims that the Romulan split was post-Surak, which… idk, that just seems way too recent to me. I’m not buying that bit. But my favorite aspect of the “Vulcan” chapters was the visual motif of Vulcan’s sister planet T’Khut standing watch over all Vulcans, and Vulcans in turn looking to her for guidance and inspiration. I could picture the looming T’Khut’s sunset visage so vividly. Wonderful imagery.
While the “Vulcan” plotline shows us Vulcan’s past, the “Enterprise” plotline shows us the threat of its possible future outside of the Federation. Despite the popularity of Surak’s “infinite diversity in infinite combinations” philosophy, xenophobia is very much alive amongst the Vulcan population. Certain individuals (I won’t give it away, but I will say I think it’s VERY contrived) have taken advantage of the population’s anti-human sentiments to leverage their own agendas. It’s up to Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sarek, and others to convince the public that secession is not the answer. McCoy in particular really shines in this story. Despite how often he gripes and pokes fun at Spock’s Vulcanisms in the show, he adamantly believes that the relationship between humans and Vulcans benefits everyone and is a crucial part of what made the Federation the utopia it has become. Everybody clap for character growth! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 There are also many delightful moments of the triumvirate just hanging out and chatting while they’re on Vulcan and the Enterprise, which we love to see.
My main gripe with this book (besides the contrived antagonist) is that there’s not enough Spock content! For a book called Spock’s World, I expected it to be from his perspective. There are a couple of scenes from Spock’s POV, but Kirk is the main perspective here. And though Kirk is great, Spock is who I’m really here for. I wanted to get deep into his feelings about the situation given he’s a child of both worlds. But I guess I’ll stick to AO3 for the truly emotional fanfiction.
Other than that though, Spock’s World is full of great character moments and interesting exploration of Vulcan’s history. A must-read Trek novel. Thank you, @dianeduane !

I got a new 3d so i started playing etrian odyssey V again and uhhh
Here be ocs
Under cut is random info on the ocs and pic of the 3ds lol
Tumblr media
First off! Nevermore the warlock (he/him)
He has a raven looking skull on his head (because i thought it was funny)
He is very confident in his ability and is the leader of the team. He is extremely afraid of snakes.
Second across is Amani the masurao! (She/her sometimes buns/bunself
She is extremely powerful but very kind. Looks like they could kill you but is actually a cinnamon roll sorta vibe. She hums and sings to herself a lot. T-rex arms for the win. She has a hugee sweet tooth and will eat almost any lolly you give her.
Thirdly we have Namir (they/them) the rover and their goodest boy mame (pronounced mah-may)
They are mute. They communicate through sign language. They love a good dad joke and will be the first to make a corny joke given even the most dire of situations. They may or may not have made some deal with some sort of god or demon to allow mame to allow them to live as long as they live.
Even the team has never seen them with their bandana down. They will wait until everyone else is asleep or move to a secluded area to eat and drink. No one really knows why they wear the bandana around their face but with the ygdrasill being as dangerous as it is, most people dont dare to ask because they fear what they may see.
Next is Dreiax the botanist (he/they)
Dreiax and Lucian are siblings! Drei had a tendency to get sick a lot so when they were growing up, they learnt to make more and more food and drink with healing capabilities. They dont have traditional sort of magical skills. All their healing is medical related through medicinal plants and stuff. They love tea and are a stop and smell the roses kinda guy (and then promptly freaking out when they realise that is in fact not a rose and is in fact an enemy) they are very optimistic and are usually the last one standing in a battle due to them keeping back from the battle to make sure everyone is ok.
If you are sick, he is the type of person to have the perfect recipe to make you feel better.
His recipe book actually doubles as a sketchbook. He loves to sit on the lower levels of the ygdrasill and just sit there and draw.
(Drei is also the most fleshed out oc here, this version of him is more like an au version lol)
Last but certainly not least is Lucian the shaman (he/they)
Lucian is the older brother by a few years. He used his magic to try and heal drei whenever he got hurt since drei never really developed magic. Their parents travelled a lot to sell from town to town so they sorta raised themselves. When they were kids and drei was still learning to cook the accidentally spilt some hot water on Lucian and burnt his face. Due to his magic he was able to heal most of it but it never fully healed. Lucian almost blames himself for the accident, for not being more observant. He does not blame drei at all.
Their favorite pass time is stargazing. They love watching constilations at night and watching the world pass by. Because of this facination, his outfit is adorned with sun, moon and stat motifs.
When they perform their magic their horns, scar and the tips of their ears and fingers glow a cyan colour. Also their hair is not naturally blue its blonde like their sibling.
Despite dealing with cards for his magic. He is notoriously bad at card games.
And i think that's about it
Anyways cool minecraft 3ds go brr

❝QUITE TRUE! YOU WOULD not desire for me to die of boredom, would you?❞ He could not help the laughter that slipped from him at her jest, pleased with the ease of it when so rarely did others attempt such in his presence. As the discussion went back to memories and change, he mulled over what was said quietly once again, expression once more pensive. ❝Mm…perhaps. One thing I can say with utmost certainty, is that whether the Nile is different from what I recall or not, looking upon its waters would still fill me with nostalgia and warmth, I think.❞ Even if he had a chance to walk about his homeland, he was sure that despite all the changes, he would still feel a great fondness for it all. To see his people still flourishing was all that any ruler would desire, or at least, he believed that they should desire. That aside, he was getting too deep into his own thoughts now, and in front of another at that. Ozymandias could go and ponder all of this at a later time. For now, he would put his attention upon his summoner. How blessed they were to have his gaze upon them for so long!
A smirk tugged upon his lips, content flashing within golden eyes. ❝By all means. I leave the purchasing to you and your discerning eye.❞ Ah…that lantern with the lotus… He would never refuse that one. The moment he had looked upon it, his thoughts had drifted home. There was nothing more beautiful than catching sight of a lotus beneath the rays of the sun or beneath the cool light of the moon. ❝I love the sun, for I am the sun. However, the moon is a sight that even the sun itself would feel moved to look upon. It is soothing in a way that the sun is not in all its quiet splendor. By all means, select that one. The sun and moon motif is good too, but that one…yes…I prefer it.❞ He gave a small nod, his head turning back towards the stand as if to gesture for her to go right ahead and do what she set out to do.

the end... it begins...
The Final Chapter:
Aestia arrives after a long boat ride in the town of Riseridge
Not a lot happens here save for one thing
Asking around, Aestia happens upon the town magistrate, who says that a large group of people passed through here the day prior
One was clearly the leader, flanked by a larger person and a smaller one, followed by 9-10 others, all cloaked
HMM I WONDER WHO THAT WAS
Aestia is astonished that Sir Eldroy yet lives - he must be the larger one
Upon further questioning, the magistrate reveals that the larger one carried a stone and had a noticeable limp
With that knowledge, progress very quickly into…
The Final Dungeon: The Spire of Beginnings
Prompt as you enter: [Please assemble a team of four before entering this dungeon]
This guy is a MAZE, mate
All sorts of dead ends and weird passageways
Ladders and platforms and ropes everywhere
Markings on the walls very reminiscent of the Gate of Finis, music also includes motifs from it
No boss rush, thankfully
This guy’s a lot simpler than the Masterless Wood
At one point there’s a large rope bridge, which triggers a cutscene (this one features your real actual party! yep!)
Aestia says she’ll go across first to see if it’s safe
Once she reaches the end, Aestia turns back, apologises, and cuts the bridge
“I’ll be back soon. Thank you for everything, and goodbye.”
The characters probably have one line each, tops (this is still octopath, can’t have them too involved)
Aestia journeys through the final leg of the cavern alone
At the end lies an enormous cavern with a great sweeping entranceway, almost like a large set of double doors were supposed to be fitted in it
Cutscene triggers as you approach: a cloaked figure stands at the door
Aestia tries to speak to them, they do not answer
She gets closer and they lunge at her
She’s able to dodge a few attacks before knocking off the cloak and triggering a fight (sort of like the General Ritsu fight from Hikari’s route) against…
The Penultimate Boss: Eldroy, Extinguished
That’s right he’s back and he is FUCKED UP
Eldroy is a knight no longer. His armour is clouded over with soot, his sword notched, and the metal that once protected him is mostly twisted away
And his body. Oh god, his body.
Eldroy has been burnt to a crisp. He’s even got that classic hole in the cheek exposing teeth. No eyes. Finger bones all but falling off of him. Wreathed once more in a green fire but it is the only thing keeping him from completely falling apart
In life, he was a bit of a showboat. He liked to gloat maybe a little too much. This thing is not that. It is as silent as the death that has already taken it.
It has the same moveset as Eldroy, Ablaze, only weaker
Same weaknesses (this does include Staffs and Wind, don’t worry), six shields
It goes down extremely easily. This isn’t a fight. This is a moment in the narrative.
It goes down without a word. Without a sound. It’s simply gone.
Taking a break before launching into the final sequence of the story so you’re getting this early :)
Tumblr media
AESTIA!!!!!! AESTIA WHY!!!!!!!!!!
chaotic there are TOO many things I want to point out in this but. FBATSBTA…. I LOVE THIS ITS AMAZING

the dog - whether it’s the way you bare your teeth when backed in a corner, your loyalty, or your tendency to act on instinct, your reoccurring theme is the dog. like mitski said “i get mean when im nervous, like a bad dog” or how halsey said “i won’t smile but i’ll show you my teeth” even when migos said “dance with my dogs in the night time” the essence of the dog runs through you. you’re tough and a quick draw on the outside, but if we got down to it we’d see you’re acting the only way you’ve ever known how. it doesn’t make you bad, survival is natural, your loyalty and determination is commendable. i don’t blame you for the way you act when your back is against a wall, but please remember to not bite the hand that feeds.

the orange - whether it’s your sweet nature, breakaway cover, or your natural displays of intimacy, you have the undercurrent of the orange. a love language in itself, your nature makes others want to take a bite and enjoy the tang that you leave behind with your laughter. you remind others of a summer day, hot air, long nights, always hopeful you’ll never go away. in her poem “the orange” by wendy cope she said “i peeled it and shared it with robert and dave, they had quarters and i had a half” you’re generous and have much to give. she also said “this is peace and contentment, it’s new” well i say, it’s you.

the bread - whether it’s your ability to rise against the odds, provide comfort, or be a staple in lives, your undercurrent is bread. you’re made from love and you carry it your whole life, to give on to others in any way you can. you’re delicate and it doesn’t take a lot to break you, but still you rise up and that is more important than what took you down. be careful with your heart, it’s so full of love that it needs to be treated delicately. you’re a staple in lives, a necessity, but not always as appreciated as you should be. so here is a thanks to you. m.f.k fisher said “ the smell of good bread baking, like the sound of lightly flowing water, is indescribable in its evocation of innocence and delight” and that my friend, that is you.

Bvlgari Girls's Baggage
So let's have a look at what ANN readers consider the better of the season. A tribute to video game pioneer Masayuki Uemura, a welcome bunch of fighting game updates, and... Heidi breaks it all down in today's beef-sized column. https://phoenet.tw/bvlgari-replica.html "One factor is, everybody has all sorts of sides to who they are. In your complete life, there are totally different occasions within the day where you modify." - Screenwriter Keiko Nobumoto at NYCC 2018. In 1995, Bulgari pushed ahead with an aggressive programme for progress, becoming listed on the Milan Stock Exchange for the first time. In 1996, the model launched its first accessories assortment, beginning with silk scarves before growing a spread of leather equipment and eyewear. In 1999, the model launched the B.zero1 ring. Greek designer Mary Katrantzou has partnered with BVLGARI to revamp the accent brand’s basic Serpenti bags. Applying her signature kaleidoscopic prints to the snake-accented purses, Katrantzou presents a novel tackle a BVLGARI favourite. Still, the various segments and card pockets make it straightforward to maintain all of your essentials organised. I see a lot of baggage, naturally, but only a few tactfully combine the art of jewellery and leather in addition to Bvlgari. Please take a second to flick thru my hand-picked assortment of elegant designer handbags. Before you go, I truly have put together a evaluate of the most elegant designer purses in a collection that I suppose you'll get pleasure from. What draws you to incest ?
Tumblr media
*sighs* Ok, here we go. I'm a real card carrying Jonsa now aren't I?
Anon, listen. I know this is an anti question that gets bandied about a lot, aimed at provoking, etc, when we all know no Jonsa is out here being all you know what, it really is the incest, and the incest alone, that draws me in. I mean, come on now. Grow up.
If I was "drawn" to incest I'd be a fan of Cersei x Jaime, Lucrezia x Cesare, hell Oedipus x Jocasta etc... but I haven't displayed any interest in them now, have I? So, huh, it can't be that.
Frankly, it's a derivitive question that is really missing the mark. I'm not "drawn" to it, though yeah, it is an unavoidable element of Jonsa. The real question you should be asking though, is what draws GRRM to it? Because he obviously is drawn to it, specifically what is termed the "incest motif" in academic and literary scholarship. That is a far more worthwhile avenue of thinking and questioning, compared with asking me. Luckily for you though anon, I sort of anticipated getting this kind of question so had something in my drafts on standby...
You really don't have to look far, or that deeply, to be hit over the head by the connection between GRRM's literary influences and the incest motif. I mean, let's start with the big cheese himself, Tolkein:
Tolkein + Quenta Silmarillion
We know for definite that GRRM has been influenced by Tolkein, and in The Silmarillion you notably have a case of unintentional incest in Quenta Silmarillion, where Túrin Turambar, under the power of a curse, unwittingly murders his friend, as well as marries and impregnates his sister, Nienor Níniel, who herself had lost her memory due to an enchantment.
Mr Tolkein, "what draws you to incest?"
Old Norse + Völsunga saga
Tolkein, as a professor of Anglo-Saxon, was hugely influenced by Old English and Old Norse literature. The story of the ring Andvaranaut, told in Völsunga saga, is strongly thought to have been a key influence behind The Lord of the Rings. Also featured within this legendary saga is the relationship between the twins Signy and Sigmund — at one point in the saga, Signy tricks her brother into sleeping with her, which produces a son, Sinfjotli, of pure Völsung blood, raised with the singular purpose of enacting vengence.
Anonymous Norse saga writer, "what draws you to incest?"
Medieval Literature as a whole
A lot is made of how "true" to the storied past ASOIAF is, how reflective it is of medieval society (and earlier), its power structures, its ideals and martial values etc. ASOIAF, however, is not attempting historical accuracy, and should not be read as such. Yet it is clearly drawing from a version of the past, as depicted in medieval romances and pre-Christian mythology for instance, as well as dusty tomes on warfare strategy. As noted by Elizabeth Archibald in her article Incest in Medieval Literature and Society (1989):
Of course the Middle Ages inherited and retold a number of incest stories from the classical world. Through Statius they knew Oedipus, through Ovid they knew the stories of Canace, Byblis, Myrrha and Phaedra. All these stories end more or less tragically: the main characters either die or suffer metamorphosis. Medieval readers also knew the classical tradition of incest as a polemical accusation,* for instance the charges against Caligula and Nero. – p. 2
The word "polemic" is connected to controversy, to debate and dispute, therefore these classical texts were exploring the incest motif in order to create discussion on a controversial topic. In a way, your question of "what draws you to incest?" has a whiff of polemical accusation to it, but as I stated, you're missing the bigger question.
Moving back to the Middle Ages, however, it is interesting that we do see a trend of more incest stories appearing within new narratives between the 11th and 13th centuries, according to Archibald:
The texts I am thinking of include the legend of Judas, which makes him commit patricide and then incest before betraying Christ; the legend of Gregorius, product of sibling incest who marries his own mother, but after years of rigorous penance finally becomes a much respected pope; the legend of St Albanus, product of father-daughter incest, who marries his mother, does penance with both his parents but kills them when they relapse into sin, and after further penance dies a holy man; the exemplary stories about women who sleep with their sons, and bear children (whom they sometimes kill), but refuse to confess until the Virgin intervenes to save them; the legends of the incestuous begetting of Roland by Charlemagne and of Mordred by Arthur; and finally the Incestuous Father romances about calumniated wives, which resemble Chaucer's Man of Law's Tale except that the heroine's adventures begin when she runs away from home to escape her father's unwelcome advances. – p. 2
I mean... that last bit sounds eerily quite close to what we have going on with Petyr Baelish and Sansa Stark. But I digress. What I'm trying to say is that from a medieval and classical standpoint... GRRM is not unique in his exploration of the incest motif, far from it.
Sophocles, Ovid, Hartmann von Aue, Thomas Malory, etc., "what draws you to incest?"
Faulkner + The Sound and the Fury, and more!
Moving on to more modern influences though, when talking about the writing ethos at the heart of his work, GRRM has famously quoted William Faulker:
His mantra has always been William Faulkner’s comment in his Nobel prize acceptance speech, that only the “human heart in conflict with itself… is worth writing about”. [source]
I’ve never read any Faulker, so I did just a quick search on “Faulkner and incest” and I pulled up this article on JSTOR, called Faulkner and the Politics of Incest (1998). Apparently, Faulkner explores the incest motif in at least five novels, therefore it was enough of a distinctive theme in his work to warrant academic analysis. In this journal article, Karl F. Zender notes that:
[...] incest for Faulkner always remains tragic [...] – p. 746
Ah, we can see a bit of running theme here, can't we? But obviously, GRRM (one would hope) doesn’t just appreciate Faulkner’s writing for his extensive exploration of incest. This quote possibly sums up the potential artistic crossover between the two:
Beyond each level of achieved empathy in Faulkner's fiction stands a further level of exclusion and marginalization. – pp. 759–60
To me, the above parallels somewhat GRRM’s own interest in outcasts, in personal struggle (which incest also fits into):
I am attracted to bastards, cripples and broken things as is reflected in the book. Outcasts, second-class citizens for whatever reason. There’s more drama in characters like that, more to struggle with. [source]
Interestingly, however, this essay on Faulkner also connects his interest in the incest motif with the romantic poets, such as Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron:
As Peter Thorslev says in an important study of romantic representations of incest, " [p]arent-child incest is universally condemned in Romantic literature...; sibling incest, on the other hand, is invariably made sympathetic, is sometimes exonerated, and, in Byron's and Shelley's works, is definitely idealized.” – p. 741
Faulkner, "what draws you to incest?" ... I mean, that article gives some good explanations, actually.
Lord Byron, Manfred + The Bride of Abydos
Which brings us onto GRRM interest in the Romantics:
I was always intensely Romantic, even when I was too young to understand what that meant. But Romanticism has its dark side, as any Romantic soon discovers... which is where the melancholy comes in, I suppose. I don't know if this is a matter of artistic influences so much as it is of temperament. But there's always been something in a twilight that moves me, and a sunset speaks to me in a way that no sunrise ever has. [source]
I'm already in the process of writing a long meta about the influence of Lord Byron in ASOIAF, specifically examining this quote by GRRM:
The character I’m probably most like in real life is Samwell Tarly. Good old Sam. And the character I’d want to be? Well who wouldn’t want to be Jon Snow — the brooding, Byronic, romantic hero whom all the girls love. Theon [Greyjoy] is the one I’d fear becoming. Theon wants to be Jon Snow, but he can’t do it. He keeps making the wrong decisions. He keeps giving into his own selfish, worst impulses. [source]
Lord Byron, "what draws you to—", oh, um, right. Nevermind.
I'm not going to repeat myself here, but it's worth noting that there is a clear through line between GRRM and the Romantic writers, besides perhaps melancholic "temperament"... and it's incest.
But look, is choosing to explore the incest motif...well, a choice? Yeah, and an uncomfortable one at that, but it’s obvious that that is what GRRM is doing. I think it’s frankly a bit naive of some people to argue that GRRM would never do Jonsa because it’s pseudo-incest and therefore morally repugnant, no ifs, no buts. I’m sorry, as icky as it may be to our modern eyes, GRRM has set the president for it in his writing with the Targaryens and the Lannister twins.
The difference with them is that they knowingly commit incest, basing it in their own sense of exceptionalism, and there are/will be bad consequences — this arguably parallels the medieval narratives in which incest always ends badly, unless some kind of real penance is involved. For Jon and Sansa, however, the Jonsa argument is that they will choose not to commit incest, despite a confused attraction, and then will be rewarded in the narrative through the parentage reveal, a la Byron’s The Bride of Abydos. The Targaryens and Lannisters, in several ways excluding the incest (geez the amount of times I’ve written incest in this post), are foils for the Starks, and in particular, Jon and Sansa. Exploring the incest motif has been on the cards since the very beginning — just look at that infamous "original" outline — regardless of whether we personally consider that an interesting writing choice, or a morally inexcusable one.
Word of advice, or rather, warning... don't think you can catch me out with these kinds of questions. I have access to a university database, so if I feel like procrastinating my real academic work, I can and will pull out highly researched articles to school you, lmao.
But you know, thanks for the ask anyway, I guess.

Calamity Trio Motifs
youtube
I really appreciate this compilation of the calamity trio’s themes- now I can finally recognize everyone’s motifs! (The better to have some heartbreak if, say, Marcy’s theme plays while Anne finally comes clean with her parents about what happened those last few moments in Amphibia and has to deal with it, or some other aching juxtaposition). And I (whoops!) have a bunch of thoughts on the possible implications of the composition choices in each.
Each of the girls’ themes is pretty simple: a short series of notes that hangs around 1 in the scale (as in do in “do re mi,” 1-2-3, etc.) and moves around stepwise or in (usually) small leaps. This means that they should be pretty straightforward to mash up at exciting moments in the show where they’re all together, like when they battled the volcakeno hornets in The Dinner.
Sasha:
Sasha has two themes: the first is an ominous, calm, and quiet series of two alternate chords: a minor 1 and a diminished 7 (super discordant), while the melody just moves stepwise between 1, 2, and 3, played on something like a celeste. It gives a feeling of subtle and contained but sinister cunning. This plays when she’s plotting or being manipulative. It doesn’t go anywhere, it just loops around without changing or growing, like how for so long she’s stuck in her habits of always being in control and using other people to get what she wants.
Her second theme is Heartstomper. As it appears in Battle of the Bands and its full version (on Spotify and YT, definitely check out if you haven’t!), it’s an upbeat “I am” song where Sasha playfully casts herself as a regret-free villain (I think? I’m sure there are different interpretations of how self-aware she is here- it’s entirely possible she doesn’t see anything wrong with being a “heartstomper”). This is an interesting contrast to how she seems to see herself, or wants to be seen: until Anne starts standing up to her, there’s not really any sign that she thinks she’s in the wrong. It’s also surprisingly complex and aggressively major key, including chords that aren’t naturally major when 1 is major too- we have M1, M4, M1; M1, M6, M5; M7b, M6, M1; M1, M5, m3 (where M indicates a major chord rooted in the scale’s 1st, 2nd, etc. note, and m means a minor chord). An instrumental version of this theme feels heroic and determined and plays when she protects others or during feats of strength (think: beating the end of the third temple & baby Sasha standing up for baby Anne and Marcy). Biggest interval leap: 1 to 5. One thing I really like is that each phrase ascends: it ends at a higher note than it begins. This could symbolize how Sasha wants to improve, to be better for the people around her.
Marcy:
Marcy’s theme is most recognizable and I believe longest during the compilations of her being clumsy/oblivious back home (from Marcy at the Gates & First Temple). Its phrases always descend: they end on a lower note than they begin. Again, could be reading way too much into this, but it could be foreshadowing that even though Marcy seems to be doing well and is on top of everything, there’s a darkness beneath and an incoming or past fall. It initially is upbeat and synth-y after her love of video games, but its variations include epic sweeping orchestral (season 2B trailer) and melancholy (when her secret is finally revealed in True Colors). It’s also arguably the most complex: the other girls’ instrumental themes really keep to the 1 or 1-4-5-6 in terms of chords, but Marcy’s goes through M4 M3 m6 M5 (with a M2 in the jazzy extension ! wow ! also, o shit there’s no M1, so the theme doesn’t ever go to to the root, like Marcy doesn’t want to go home, or the other two have a sense of who they are and she doesn’t ???  yeesh). It also has one of the highest interval leaps, a 6, between the first two notes.
Anne:
Anne also has two main themes: the first is most recognizably in the end credits themes. The melody starts at the root (1), leaps up to 4, descends stepwise back to 1, leaps up to 5, comes back down to 1, leaps up to 3, back down, and circles around the 1. Her notes jump up but always return where they came- there’s adaptability, but also stability. The lower countermelody ascends when the upper melody descends, balancing it out- maybe like how the Plantars and Wartwood community support Anne in her times of need? Anne meets all the challenges that come her way, and she grows, but she doesn’t lose herself. This theme comes up at moments of connection, rising up to a challenge, and learning and growth.
Her other theme is arguably No Big Deal. It’s first introduced in Battle of the Bands as an upbeat, joyful declaration that even in a wild and completely unforeseeable situation, she’s doing all right and can manage: she’s coming into her own, she’s comfortable in her own skin. She’s back with her friends, she’s been able to deal with everything that’s been thrown at her, and her adventure is almost done. Unlike all of the other themes, in which notes mostly ascend or descend by one step, this one bounces all the way from 1 to 8 (a full octave) to 5 and back. These perfect fifth leaps are used in instances like the Star Wars and Star Trek opening themes to convey grand, epic, sweeping emotions, strength, fearlessness, and optimism.
No Big Deal has an instrumental reprise in True Colors as Anne’s Power. When Andrias drops Sprig, Anne is confronted with the fact that on this big, epic adventure, she’s dealing with formidable evil and unacceptable loss.  The instrumental adaptation of the verse is in minor key, but the chorus is unchanged from major for some major-key-on-top-of-tragedy bittersweetness.
At least in the versions I checked the chords on, both Anne’s and Marcy’s themes are in Bb major, while Sasha’s ominous theme is in Bb minor and goes up into D major for the Heartstomper instrumental. hmmmmm (edit: @nonexistent-ever has pointed out that everyone’s themes do appear in a bunch of different keys! so maybe this is less of a thing)
That’s all I’ve got for now, and I can’t wait to rewatch episodes and have these motifs smack me in the face with emotions!
