#grrm and the romantics

Man, it’s tough out here for us Theon Latecomer truthers. Winter may be characterized by death, yet Theon is the very definition of the idea that what is dead may never die but rises again harder and stronger. He was raised among wolves, and wolves rule the winter. There’s a new age of gods and heroes upon us, a new age where no godless man shall sit upon the Seastone chair. Yet the gods have cast their eyes on Theon and are calling his name. What do you mean he’s going to die? :((

I think once people start accepting that one of the key ideas being explored with Brienne’s character is romance, I’ll finally be at peace with this fandom.

as a 6 ish month old asoiaf fan I come to bear the news that targaryens will 100% break ur resolve of not shipping incest its meant to happen at some point. when I was a wee lad reading clash of kings I was horrified by it now I'll ship siblings and won't even blink as long as they have white hair

I’m seeing this rise up again because of Tedbecca discourse, but can the idea of platonic relationships “transcending” romantic relationships and the seemingly intellectual superiority that comes with it, please die out? The problem is too many years of cliche, banal, romantic onscreen relationships have fostered the idea that romantic relationships themselves are trivial and exist only to fulfill some sexual needs or society’s expectations to be “paired off.” Yes I agree there are too many romantic relationships onscreen but let’s be specific-too many perfunctory, boring ones. Yes not all relationships need to turn sexual/romantic to be interesting but for any romantic relationship to be interesting (to me at least) it has to contain the very elements that ironically make others think it must “transcend” any romantic description.

Imagine thinking that George RR Martin, who values the pen over the sword, doesn’t favor Sansa.

What are your favorite Dany ships?
I dont really ship Dany with anyone. She's a romantic character and she longs for a partner that will love her regardless of her past but I've always interpreted this as her wishing for a family as well. She equates marriage and romantic love with family bc she doesn't believe she can have children and all of her family has died. Her last chance at family is through marriage but "who could ever love a dragon." I think it'd be pretty beautiful for her to find a family (like her literal nephews) and have that found family love. She's never experienced pure familial love and, imo, Dany finding that would be much more poignant then finding romantic love. I'm always gonna choose a found family trope over anything else lol.
I like Dany and Daario, I think it's massively overhated and Daario is villainized by the fandom even though he's no more violent than any other male character. Of course I'd like Dany/Daario is they were closer in age but I like that Daario is clearly her mistress and is just a fun time. It's a very lust-fueled and youthful romance. It's not great but it's overhated and I like the version of it that exists in my head a lot. There's also some potential exploration of Dany's trauma here with how she compared Daario to Drogo in one of their first encounters. It's like she's trying to recreat her first traumatic sexual experiences except this time she is in control, she initiates the sex, she is the one with power. Can't ignore that all of this was started when Jorah molested her and she suddenly began to have sexual urges, like the molestation triggered her into seeking out what she experienced with Drogo again. I feel like grrm could've done more with their relationship in that regard but Dany actively avoids looking too closely at her wounds. At some point though, she's gonna have to get over that. If grrm had my vision then Dany would have pegged Daario the first time they fucked.
Dany/Tyrion is also a good ship imo but, again, I wish they were closer in age lol. That's just my personal preference but it is what it is. I'm happy with them being platonic as well esp considering they can be the loving siblings they never had. I love found family dynamics, I love healing from generational pain, I love the heartache and relief of realizing 'this is how family is supposed to love.'
I'm not into Jonerys or Dany/FAegon. I dont, like, hate those ships but I'm pretty ambivalent about them. *Could* be interesting but we'll see. grrm is a very good writer (when he wants to be) and all that so whatever he decides, it'll probable be good. For me, personally, Dany and Jon being a family and accepting each other as their family is way more interesting than some soulmate driven romance. Dany and Young Griff have so much potential as a platonic pairing to me too.
I dont really think about any other Dany ships that much honestly. Dany/[insert any woman character here] is obviously perfect. Seriously wish grrm would explore Dany's sexuality more but I doubt he will at this point.
Dany/Jhogo is the superior ship but there's very little to go on bc grrm refuses to give any of the bloodriders interiority or personality. It is the ship that had the most potential tho, if only grrm could try to care about the nonwhite characters that have been by Dany's side since day 1.
edit: wrote some more thoughts about different Dany ships here if you're interested

random asoiaf re read and i just got to the part where sansa wishes joffrey would get the white hart but by killing it because he likes hunting and killing so much and not by sparing it like the heroes in her stories do so like she is absolutely willing to adjust her fairytale themed wishes if she really likes/loves/is infatuated with someone
Tumblr media
it is interesting because most of her fandom is fixated on her getting her romantic interest in the fashion of her stories and songs neglecting the part where she herself remolds these stories to best fit the personality of her prince even if they tweak the heroic image into something that wouldn't really be considered gallant/heroic. just. a point to note.

i literally could not give more of a fuck over which grown man you ship sansa with like you can justify it all u want i do not give a FUCK !! that little girl needs to have a simple middle school relationship where the most you do is hold hands and share cool bug facts, that is the limit of romance i want for sansa.

Jon and Dany are clearly the song of ice and fire and George's intended endgame - he's even said the books are about them meeting. You must be dumb and blind to ignore what the author has LITERALLY SAID!

“He said that he is a romantic, in the classical sense. He said the trouble with being a romantic is that from a very early age you keep having your face smashed into the harshness of reality. That things aren't always fair, bad things happen to good people, etc. He said it's a realists’ world, so romantics are burned quite often. This theme of romantic idealism conflicting with harsh reality is something he finds very dramatic and compelling, and he weaves it into his work. Specifically he mentioned that the Knight exemplifies this, as the chivalric code is one of the most idealistic out there, protection of the weak, paragon of all that is good, fighting for truth and justice. The reality was that they were people, and therefore could do horrible cruel things, rape, pillage, wanton killing, made all the more striking or horrifying because it was in complete opposition to what they were supposed to be.”

hello im the anon from dany and tyrion ask (my faves hehe) and to be honest dany/tyrion intrigues me and there needs to be more content for the pairing 👀 like ik ppl say it’s a crackship but like tyrion is 1001% gonna form a bond with her before she even meets jon and im soooo excited for them to finally meet 😭💕
Hi Anon!
Welcome to rarepair-hell !!
Tumblr media
Yes, I agree, there needs to be more content for Dany and Tyrion. (*tries to pretend that I hadn't promised more Danyrion content to many of my mutuals without delivering it*)
While I agree that Dany/Tyrion is not canon, I would not call it crack!ship though. It is not yet fully realised, but it's on its way there.
Q: Since Tyrion is going to the Free Cities (and one of Varys's contacts there likely being Magister Illyrio), is it a possibility that he might hear of and hook up with Dany and her dragons (he's fascinated by dragons, if I remember well)? GRRM: It's possible. [source]
Btw, if you need some push to enter into this ship here's my discussion with outerds on how Dany and Tyrion suit each other well, and you can find my meta on Dany and her White Lion here.
You should definitely check out this post by Bruno showcasing the parallels in personality between Dany & Tyrion; as well as this gifset that portrays the narrative parallels between them. And you can go through the tag #danyrion on my blog for any content between Dany/Tyrion.

genuinely perplexed by what the general fandom consensus on sansan is, i think it’s an interesting dynamic but the age gap is naturally a little 🤨🤨 mode. BUT grrm has said that the unkiss is smth and also they have the same age gap as jb which is like THEEE asoiaf ship… i’m not gonna become a hardcore sansan because the books are more to me than shipping (didn’t even consider ships on my first read besides jb) but sansan fascinates me in particular bc it’s an interesting moral sticking point in a lot of the fandom

Finished reading The Rogue Prince, technically Fire and Blood, and now the show makes me uncomfortable even more. I’ve read about the Dance before, I remembered Alicent was older than Rhaenyra, I remembered she was an adult, but I guess I wasn’t fully aware just how bad it was.
Not only Alicent’s younger in House of the Dragon, but Rhaenyra’s older, which changes her even more. She’s fucking eight, when named the Heir, she’s eight when Cole becomes her favourite- completely different thing when it’s a childhood crush-, she’s EIGHT when her mother dies and she gets a step mother! A child by both ours and Westerosi standards.
Meanwhile Alicent is eighteen- again, an adult even by our standards! It’s much less creepy when barely 30 y/o marries 18 y/o in society, where that translates as several years marriageable, than some 40/50 y/o marrying a poor, poor FifteenAndSoonToBePregnant!.
Alicent wasn’t some child bride, in Westeros she could’ve been married for years!
Her daughter’s married at thirteen. Aemma, her predecessor, in fucking eleven!
... In light of these tales, some have suggested that Aenys might have felt a need to see his daughter wed as soon as possible. Regardless of the truth of that surmise, at eighteen Rhaena was certainly of an age to marry, three years older than her mother and father had been when they were wed.
That’s about Rhaena, only a generation earlier, btw.

So yeah, picture this scene with girls looking like this (thanks, Uncle Google):

... and have in mind the second one’s peers are considered full grown women, often with child or three of their own...

oh this is so good. he's as broken and void of outward identity as his shield. being the king's justice has rotted his individuality to the point where, to everyone perceiving him, his function is all he is. what's sad is that that was what jaime expected him to be when he invited him along. he wanted a walking diary that could conveniently spar with him as well, that's why he's so appalled when ilyn first laughs. he simply did not account for ilyn's personhood, realized too late that he was a human being who could form opinions and could judge him, just like everyone else.
he's lucky that ilyn is also a deeply jaded person who is nothing more than amused by his disturbing past.
Tumblr media
anyways i know ilyn's gay ass was laughing even harder after that
