The excuses always are "oh we cant ship Vickie with Robin, we don't know enough about her, and they didn't interact enough for us to ship them, oh Vickie has no personality."
But then the fandom turns around and ships Gareth, who we know exactly three things about: plays dnd, likes metal, and plays drums in the same band as Eddie, and he is basically interchangeable with the other two corroded coffin/ hellfire dudes for all we know about them, with Will who he has never met. (This isn't a criticism of the character or the ship, more of the way people treat Gareth and Gareth/Will vs how they treat Vickie and Robin/Vickie.)
We have so many little things about Vickie. The strong hints of her being bi. Her having a similar sense of humour and taste in movies to Steve, like with the muppet joke and Fast Times. She's in band with Robin. She stayed behind and volunteered after the earthquake. She rambles when she gets flustered/nervous.
So imo its half 😡 she gets in the way of my gay ship so she is the worst. And half just the general fandom thing of treating women like shit, or holding them to a higher standard than men.
(seriously this fandom sees three men that have so little development and personality that they are basically the same character and can give them all in depth and different background stories. But one woman that has some overlap of interests with other characters, while still being her own character and it's just she's basically the same as a different character, that she has obvious differences to, so we're not even going to include her, or if we do she's the villain or we're going to treat her like shit)
totally agree anon! also interesting that gareth and will have dnd in common and yet.... but i suppose it could be considered a crack ship (though not extremely so) and therefore one might dismiss it as not counting the same as Vickie. I don't dislike it it's simply a ship that's there to me haha.
maybe like. last fall or something the vickie hate got really bad for some reason like I damn. I guess she's a bit of a blank slate so you can give her any personality but there was some really rank stuff happening. absolutely bonkers. either that or ignoring her existance or a quick "crush faded/it didn't work out". which is fair it's their fic and they can glance over whatever they want but it's frustrating when it's sooo common. and the excuse that they barely interacted (even tho everytime Vickie was there it was some kind of romantic thing for robin!) so it's hard to ship them. seems like a bit of a copout to me. people have shipped more with less. (also bypasses potential dram there which would maybe be fun to see? thy're so messy let them be messy) soooo right about it being part for the ship part treating women poorly. (a common problem in fandoms far and wide)
But also we do know a few things about that aren't "rambles and is in band". she also talks over the national anthem and eavesdrops! She gets passionate about movies, gets distracted, and enjoys Robin's company! It's so sad that she's often left to the wayside for being boring or too much like Robin yet other male side characters we know even less about get backstories etc from the fandom. Like damn can we not give vickie some time to shine? more love for vickie always!!
anyways you said everything really well anon.

Out here Jsab posting !
Quick and shallow character summaries under the cut that you can 100% ignore
(Blue square) Lazureus P-1, He/Him and any non gendered pronouns. Gendervoid Aromantic (not repulsed, just very little attraction) Androsexual!
Extrovert, Neutral Good (somehow.??)
Only one of the four with a perfect memory in spite of immortality! Bit of a cruel joke at this point, really.
Head of the Watchers; those responsible for armed forces, ‘security’ and detainment. Its not a job Laz enjoys, but he doesn’t really have a say in that!
Voice cast: The Periodic Table Song by ASAPscience
———
(Yellow Triangle) Amael P-2, they/xe/she , demigirl and AroAce (romance repulsed)
Introvert, True Neutral
Amael with their immortality only remembers fragments, with periods of amnesia that exist randomly and even recently. She logs things digitally to deal with when that happens.
Head of the Developers, the largest sector, though xe automates her work where possible. Anything involved with “production” and R&D falls under their jurisdiction, but she doesnt like to touch much out of her current passion project.
Voice cast: ES by Crying
———
(Green Pentagon) Protham P-3, she/they, female and fem-leaning bi
Extrovert, Chaotic Evil (once again. Somehow! These are done with that online dnd test btw)
She has a pretty typical memory, and anything not particularly emotionally charged or notable fades into something she cant remember at all after a few months. Facts persist longer, though.
Her sector does not have a name, as its identity is a lot looser than the other three, encompassing media, news, entertainment, and public appeasement in the general sense of it. Though, to the average citizen, she seems more an idol or influencer than anything more insidious.
Voice cast: Bottom of the River by Delta Rae
———
(Orange Circle) Aurum P-4, they/xey, nonbinary and demi-recipromantic ace
Ambivert, Lawful Good
Aurum only has a functional memory of twenty five years, and anything beyond that is completely blank. Xey have taken up regular journaling as a result, and have amassed quite the collection after a millennia or so. Its incredibly well organised with events tagged and coded!
Aurums heads the Pathfinders, who are involved in public safety. Law making, Trials, Forensics and Regulations are for the most part their field, but more serious laws must be parsed through the king- which Aurum often finds less than favourable, being a firm pacifist and believer in reformation than punishment. (They have been known to skew sentences lighter than otherwise would have been called for, when xey see it fit.)
Voice cast: Pirates Reprise by Chris Garneau

Make me choose between two things:
Ok if you insist. 😈
Only one of these can exist, which do you choose? Good Omens season 2 or Baldur's Gate 3?
-anntickwittee
What an absolutely vile question (affectionate).
To be honest? I know I'm currently obsessed with BG3 so I'm probably biased, but I think I'd rather keep BG3 over GO2. AND I HATE SAYING THAT!!!
My reason being: We were all super content with GO S1. It followed the book pretty closely and added elements that I think made it even more enjoyable than the book (In my opinion! I know it's beloved in its book form and I love it too, I just love how the show expanded on things). I truly didn't know what to expect from S2 because S1 was so well self contained and that's all fans thought we were ever going to get. I am THRILLED we got an S2. It's gorgeous and perfect and I'm beyond excited for S3 (which starts filming in January!!!!)
With BG3, it's really gotten me out of my comfort zone in terms of gaming and storytelling. In the past, I steered clear of big open world games because I was way too overwhelmed and prefer straightforward paths in games like Pokemon and Deltarune (I know there are multiple endings and ways to play, but for the most part there's an order in which to do things). With BG3, there are truly so many options that each gaming experience can feel brand new and pan out incredibly differently from a previous game. I love that there's replayability and that I'll be able to keep replaying it for years to come.
It's also helped push me in terms of playing and understanding dnd. I've been playing for a little over a year now and watching actual plays for longer, but I understand even more now having played this game. There's always a little feeling of excitement when the DM or people I'm watching play mention something that I learned because I've played BG3.
Additionally, something I've been struggling with recently is feeling motivated to be creative. I love my job and the people I work with, but there can be a monotony that creeps in since I work from home and have a fairly regimented schedule (animation production is NO JOKE! And it RULES!). Baldur's Gate has consistently inspired me to create (mainly write, which is what I've always wanted to do) and I'm so grateful for that after feeling lost for a long time.
Granted, I'm still feeling lost and unsure of my abilities, but getting to practice storytelling with characters I love and settings and elements I find interesting is really amazing. Yes, Good Omens 2 could have inspired something like this in me, but for whatever reason, it was BG3 that did. I read (and continue to read) a good amount of GO fics, but I was never inspired enough to create my own (though it DID inspire me to make some fun gifsets which I loved making). With BG3, not only have other fics inspired me, but there are moments between cutscenes and story beats that I've wanted to write and expand on since the game is so huge and the writers and developers could only expand on so much themselves. Ultimately, I want to be able to create those fantastical worlds and lovable characters and I'm really thankful BG3 reminded me of that.
Do I have any big ideas currently? No. But the intent is there and that's huge! So I'll keep persisting :)
POINT IS: I love both pieces of media and they're both deeply special to me, but since BG3 has helped reawaken a part of myself that's been snoozing for a long time, I'll pick that FOR NOW.

Autumn anime 2023 is so STACKED, it's illigal!
Aside from the obviously amazing continuing shows, there's TOO MANY great new ones.
Based on first episodes, here's my top ranking (may be subject to change cuz Apothecary Diaries isn't out yet. And excluding SpyxFamily, dr. Stone and Tokyo Revengers which are all *chef's kiss*)
1. Kamonohashi Ron: Deranged Detective
Tumblr media
you had me at Detective. and then you had me at Deranged. Also, I'm a big fan of Amano Akira's other works, Reborn and eldLIVE (Psycho-Pass not so much, but she only did the character art) Depressed adult who is too curious for his own good, what's not to love?
2. Undead Unluck
Tumblr media
I saw the manga before and had been really anticipating the anime. They're such a fun duo and their personalities and abilities compliment one another really well. looks like there'll be a lot of cool unusual superpowers. Reminds me a lot of Blood Lad, just hoping this anime won't end with virtually nothing solved T~T;
3. Kingdom of Ruin
Tumblr media
Bit on the over the top side with the amount of tragedy, but the worldbuilding seems very interesting. I'm a slut for witch hunting too. May end up severely traumatized if I continue, but we'll see how it goes.
4. My New Boss Is Goofy
Tumblr media
My soul is healed, my crops are growing. Grown men doing stilly stuff is comfort food for the eyes. Looks a bit yaoi baiting, but can't complain if it's cute. Reminds me of Cool Douji Danshi.
5. Migi & Dali
Tumblr media
I don't even know what's going on at this point, it's so surreal. Elder couple wants to adopt one child and genius twins thought 'we can work with that'. The silly love children of Johan Liebert and Sakamoto desu ga. (same author as Sakamoto too. it sure shows.)
6. Crash course on Naughtiness
Tumblr media
Last season, I was confronted with the pet-peeve of feeble waifu syndrome (I finished My Happy Marriage, but I'm sorry, I could not stand that girl...) And this season around, I realized the formula that breaks the curse of feeble waifus: a batshit crazy counterpart. This man is just bullying her with kindness. plus points for another excelent job done by Sugita Tomokazu.
7. Frieren
Tumblr media
As a big fan of DnD, I can't say no to such a DnD-based series. Plus the pressure of having to live such a long live as elves do is very interesting. It's a bit slow to my liking, but the characters are amusing and layered.
8. Yuzuki family's 4 sons
Tumblr media
a young man who has to take care of his 3 little brothers after his parents died, give me some napkins Q-Q not a single person looks or acts their age (the youngest has better vocabulary than I do;;) but it's all fun and sweet and trying to find your way in an unusual family-hirarchy
9. I'm in love with the villainess
Tumblr media
My eyes hurt from looking at this. But the over the top artstyle works quite well with how silly the story is. I too would like to say 'step on me, mommy' to my favorite villain. Just hope it won't become repetitive in its jokes.
10. Tearmoon Empire
Tumblr media
Wow, will you look at that. Another reincarnated villainess. Luckily, this one has no memories of living in a different world or something. Just her future self's diary. Enjoying the concept where she's not suddenly a saintly good girl for a change.
11. Oujo to Banken
Tumblr media
This dude is on THIN fucking ice. I commonly enjoy age gaps very much. but in no way what so ever, would I support a relationship between a teenager and the 10 year older guy who basically raised her. Him being her parent figure is where I draw the line. That said, I'm eating up the amount of over-protectiveness and yakuza-logics. It has the amount of spice I had hoped to find in Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting that wasn't there.
12. Ragna Crimson
Tumblr media
I'm sorry. just...... you can't make me believe that the ditsy loli-girl is the best dragon killer in the world. stop. The maincharacter is quite interesting, though. I like how it's like... his actual own power that he has for his OP special snowflake thing. Borrowing tomorrow's energy for today.....that's the description of a burn out I read the other day;;; But you do you, boy. good luck dying very early in life.

Continuation of my Cis!Swap Steddie thoughts (thank you for all the likes <3<3 )
Ok so the thing we (or at least I) love so much about Steve and Eddie are their dualities, right? Steve, with his fucking fantastic character arc and Eddie being a secret big softie In this verse, I think it goes a little like this Stevie falls in love. Instead of Nance, though, its Jonathan. Her reasoning for dating him, when Carol asks in that sneering way of hers, is simple. Hes hot. He does exactly what she tells him, and she likes being his muse or whatever. For his photos. The real reason is that he's kind to her, and Stevie doesn't know what to do with that. Jonathan does like her too, in his own way. He's not blind, he knows she's beautiful, and he's always had a thing for powerful women. and so, he tries his very best to ignore her mean streak. make excuses. They sleep together for the first time the same night that Will goes missing, same kind of party, same kind of tension, and Jonathan understandably goes a little crazy with guilt. The rest goes as you might remember, Jonathan and Nancy start to investigate, and Stevie doesn't mean to be distant, but also has no idea what to do. She's never known how to be the support, since nobody's ever done that for her. not really. The local cinema still ends up advertising Nancy the slut wheeler, and in the alley, its Nancy who gets called the slur. Nancy who starts the fight, though its a quick one. A clean break of Stevies nose, well deserved, well remembered. Her nose never quite heals right, a little crooked now, a constant reminder of the imperfections of the Queen of Hawkins High. Much later, when Jonathan finally calls bullshit, he does it sober, but it doesn't hurt any less. So, Stevie tries to be better. Taps into an older-sister attitude she never knew she had, and becomes the protector and best friend of a group of wild kids with way too much trauma for their age. When Dustin asks her how to talk to girls, she gives the same advice though - act like you don't care - Because it had always worked on her, after all. ---- Eddie makes friends by being ruthless, too. Fights tooth and nail to be "one of the boys" with the local nerds, pulls down their gatekeeping walls one by one by showing them that she's not just some girl. She's Eddie the freak Munson, and she's here to destroy whatever monster you throw her way, be it DND or the corridors of high school. With her leather jackets and spiked bracelets, people slowly get the message. Hellfire Club isn't her idea - but she worms herself into the group by being crass and a little stupid and most of all entertaining, pulling out all the stop she learned from drama class, and it works. And its great! She's finally found some role models that she actually cares to look up to, who welcome her in as well. With these guys, she can make tolkien references and goblin jokes and they don't just get it, they laugh.
Soon, they even forget that she's not one of the boys. In fact, they forget it so well that they start talking about girls, even when she's right there. And she doesn't hate it at first, cause yeah, there's definitely been some stirrings of trouble associated with pretty girls for her but she's not ready to have that thought yet only... She starts realizing that the nature of their talk, the way they joke? its... not kind. Its not that Eddie can't take a bit of swearing or crass talk or whatever, but its the way they talk about the girls, like they're not even people. Like they are either fantasies to leer at or bitches to scoff at and all she can think of is Chrissy Cunningham, who had smiled and told her she really liked the buzzcut. Who was the only one who had.
And if those really are the only options for a girl - hot or bitch, what the hell was she?
Part 3!

So, your art is amazing! I followed you for Yakuza stuff but I enjoy everything you post. However I must admit I have no idea what DnDads is lol. My brother and I were debating this the other day. Is it a bunch of dads who play DnD? Or is it a group of people role-playing as dads? Please let me know.
TL;DR it's a group of people roleplaying as dads, sent to a fantasy world to search for their lost sons Listen to Dungeons & Daddies here or on your local podcasting platform! Season 1 of DnDads (aka. Dungeons and Daddies: Odyssey) is about four dads from our world flung into a land of high fantasy and magic in a quest to rescue their lost sons. It's the starting point I highly recommend you start with as much of the background plot of Season 2 will not make sense even though it has a new cast of characters.
My general rule of thumb when recommending Dndads is to listen to S1 episodes 1-5. It covers the intro episode, the second (which is mostly a test by the DM to see if they can side quest in a single episode) and the start of the first arc of the series which involves one of the dad's kids. If you're not feeling up to the podcast by the end of episode 5, it's alright to drop. Episodes tend to range from an hour to an hour thirty-ish, sometimes its more. I listened to this entire podcast because each episode was pretty compact compared to other DnD stuff I was into at the time.
It's mainly a comedy podcast, but has some very touching moments and angst as well if you're into that (which i joke about here). Another thing if you're into DnD, especially 5e is that this cast does not follow the rules of 5e at all. Like the rogue does not sneak attack. The bard does not use bardic inspiration until like, several episodes in. Spells are used wrong, the DM rules things differently, etc. They often talk themselves out of encounters and straight up hard combat episodes are pretty rare in the series. However, something I enjoy is some player made mechanics. Especially if there's a detriment for comedy, such as Glenn's nunchucks where he can roll to flourish and add more damage to his hit but if he rolls low he hits his nuts. Animal handling is used for cars. Any amount of items they have (usually fan made) that do something insane. It's fun. Also hey, another thing that tends to get me into podcasts is animatics so here's some fun ones:
Meet the Oak Boys! by soapitude Ron's Beautiful Pipes by CCRose Measure Once, Cut Twice by kineticallyanywhere (Spoilers for S1EP14) Tower of Terry by kineticallyanywhere I'd also plug my own work here but it's mainly season 2 stuff Last thing I'd talk about is the patreon bonus campaigns but they're all very good and hilarious. If you get into the series I highly recommend checking them out!
Have fun, I hope things go alright!

Writeblr (re)Introduction
Hey hi hello what is up it is I. again.
I don’t think I actually did one of these when I set up over here and it’d probably be out of date even if I had and it’s been a hot minute so. here we are.
Name’s Ace! Pronouns’re They/Them! Age is uhhhhh 28 currently but that’s changing in three weeks!
I did have a spiel half planned but that was in the other room so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I write mostly fantasy bc I like to overextend on world building. I don’t have a current WIP, bc I have a tendency to jump from story idea to story idea as the mood takes me.
Also bc I self published the last one I was focused on as a joke. but. it’s there.
Currently I seem to be doing a lot of DnD shenanigans (which is going up on @dorksndisasters, but I reblog the story stuff over here anyhow)
 Other notable focuses include:
Fair Folk
Werecreatures
Time Travel
Superheroes
found family
Pirates
Sometimes in the same story! Probably all incredibly queer!
Seriously all the OC inserts I had when I thought I was straight have slowly queered over the years, it’s great. Only one of them has a full gender left.
I’m always up for being tagged in tag games! I sometimes take a while to respond, but that shouldn’t stop you ;)
I do character rambles on Sundays! Or. well, I used to, but I keep thinking about starting ‘em back up again. they’re all under #character rambles or #so it ends if you wanna get a feel for some of my dumbasses. I occasionally do them for stories when I’m trying to work out plot shenanigans, but I can’t currently remember the tag for them oops.
You want other places you can find me? have a generic-brand list
But split down from that;
twitter (writer & gender thoughts)
instagram (writing & food)
twitch (hiatus’d, pokemon/fenyx rising/indie games mostly, occasionally writing streams during nano)
ko-fi (ebooks)
The book I self-published is Expect to Fly, which is parallel worlds and learning how to start making decisions for yourself because you’re annoyed about the choices being made for you. Also, there are wings.
(I have still not learnt that lesson for myself)
n hey, if you’re still here, have a piece of writing as a treat! ft newest kid on the block, local cocky bastard Chant Trapeiros
There’s a muted blare of sound from inside Razz’s robes and he flinches, eyes growing wide as he searches through them to find the orb. “I left an experiment running – oh no-" He rattles off the phrase in goblin, and the orb dissolves into smoke and encompasses him before anyone else can react.
The smoke billows up far taller than Razz or Phorg and tinges dull red in the centre of its darkening mass.
A hand covered in a bulky gauntlet that looked to be made of bones sweeps out of the smoke and it slowly clears to reveal a tall humanoid. She's wearing a long vibrantly red coat and holds what looks like a worn walking cane in her right hand, though she’s not using it as such. Her hair is pulled back into a high ponytail between black horns that curve back from her forehead and down around her ears, and has streaks of bright orange and deep purple through it.
She winks one solid black eye at the party and swings the cane up to rest on her shoulders, smirking at the party. "Well howdy, y’all. Got room for li’l old me on your adventure here?”

idk if there's even a remote point of talking to u about my ocs babe, all you do is listen to me talking about my ocs.
Anyway let's talk about Caspian. I know u wanna know about Caspian.
Caspian is a support character to the protagonist of Oak, Ash and Thorn.
He was under Fairweather's care for a while, making him another Siren who is also a pirate (at least part time), as he travelled with her for many, many years.
He is technically a merman, half human and half siren, and has lived peacefully among both humans and Sirens in his 330-year-life span.
Like Fair, he wears a mask to conceal his scales when amongst humans. He has the power of compulsion and weather manipulation, as well as a power completely unique to him - the ability to raise the dead that had drowned at sea. This was a gift to him from the forest after he took over his place as a cardinal sin.
*giggles* I Do wanna know about Caspian!! :D
He sounds absolutely fabulous and intriguing (and I don't know if you ever confirmed my theory, but 👀👀👀)
Also the ability to raise the dead, holy fuck, please say more :0

Happy Blorbo Blursday!
For a character of your choice: are there any extremely formative experiences that happened before the book and/or aren't mentioned in the book? If so, what is it, and what effect did it have on them?
Y'know, it took me a while of thinking, bc I'm not currently writing anything, but I am a DM, and as such I always have a story to tell
So! I will go ahead and say if you're part of the Froysil campaign, maybe don't read the next part XD
But there is a character that I'm very excited about introducing! It's name is Moirah and when it was very young it was "sacrificed" to keep an ancient being from wreaking havoc on the world. In reality it made a deal with the being, so they now share one body (the being grants Moirah powers and in turn they get to see the world through its eyes)

Oh yeah!! I write sometimes and I’ve picked up doodling again too! I really enjoy crafts and photography too but am sadly terrible at both :P
Well then I'll happily invite you to join Three Too Many Fics, originally only a writing server we now welcome all art forms!! We're always happy to have someone new join, and our mods work hard to put out fun prompts regularly :D

hi!! Do you have any discord servers you would recommend? I’m new to social media as a whole (I’ve lurked on tumblr for ages though) and I’ve been meaning to get more active socially… You seem to be very kind and welcoming so I thought maybe you’d have recommendations? Ty in advance
Hi :0
Honestly I'm not in a lot myself, mostly just friend servers, but if you're interested in writing or art (or crafts, photography, music, cosplay etc) I got a server or two that you might be interested in :0

Meine #1 des Jahres 2022
You now require being surrounded by plants to live. What plants do you choose?
Jokes on you, I already require that XD
Uhm, succulents for sure, I've got a bunch of babies that I'm trying to rise, then my beloved Diva and, hmmmmm,,, oh yeah, my rubber tree, of course! Maybe some edible ones for cooking?
Oh and definitely chamomile, yarrow, lavender, plantain, ground ivy and chickweed!! Oh and blueweed(/chicory), of course!!
And then a fruit tree or two to round it out, and a field of pumpkins :D
(This is of course assuming I have a proper garden too)
Edit: I forgot about dandelions and daisies and violets and lesser celandine and I'm sure many many more, they just bring me a lot of joy XD

I've been rereading some of your fics, and with you saying prompts are open, I gotta ask, update on director sanvers v with Alex as the hinge? Absolutely no pressure, esp cause it seems you wanna branch out a bit more, but damn if I've wondered how they are doing
Hey there! Probably won't get to a whole fic about these three anytime soon, but perhaps you'd enjoy a few random headcanons about how things have been going? (also I've been feeling particularly attached to them of late after seeing TLW Gen Q really drop the ball on their attempt at poly stories :/ )
- Alex is still the hinge partner; Maggie's not seeing anyone else, but she's really enjoying having a bit more time for herself and the community garden plot she got (after 2 years on the waiting list); Lucy went back to the law after Marsdin's new legislation hit the books, and she splits the time she's not holed up in her office with Alex and Vasquez (who she's still dating and still refusing to go camping with; no matter how good at it she can be, it doesn't make it something she wants to do)
- Superfriends game nights have pretty much abandoned certain games like charades, pictionary, and taboo because even with a "no Danvers sisters on one team" rule, no one stands a chance, and it always came down to Alex and Maggie vs. Lucy and Vasquez. Winn campaigned hard for them to try DND (dammit, he's always wanted to DM a big campaign), and once he had Brainy and Nia on his side, he managed to sway the whole group. (Alex was the most resistant, but she was finally swayed with the promise that she could design her own weaponry.) Kara proposed that they play in the Sky High universe, and it was just ridiculous enough for everyone to agree. Lucy and Maggie both voluntarily chose to be classified as sidekicks, and they've bonded over pitching the most ridiculous schemes that only their random sidekick powers can facilitate, supers be damned, and Lucy's got a +7 on charisma that pretty much guarantees she always gets her way. (Their characters are now dating, and they tease Alex about how much she blushes at seeing them flirt.)
- Maggie and Vasquez joke a lot about buying a row of houses so that they don't have to build commute time into their massive shared calendar anymore. It was a running joke until they found a massive duplex on the outskirts of town with enough space for Maggie to garden up front and a big fenced-in backyard, which feels more and more important by the day as Alex keeps spamming the group chat with 90lb mutts in need of a loving home, and everyone's fairly certain that they'll be at a 1:1 human:dog ratio before long. The house needs a million and one repairs, but dammit, they've got tool belts and a bit of knowledge and an extensive history of YouTube searches about "how to x," and they're making it work. (Plus, Kara's handy in a pinch. Like when they need someone to lift the house up just enough to peek at the foundations...)
- Technically the houses are divided, but they've installed an inside door that's almost never locked. Besides, the good kitchen is on one side, and the better living room set up is on the other, so it's only fair that they keep an open passage readily available. (After Gertrude gets a brother who Alex names Harold to the surprise of no one in the house and the confusion of everyone in the neighborhood, they take down the door entirely. Apparently doggy doors don't work too well for 110 lb great pyrenees mixes barreling through them at 25mph.) On Saturdays, Vasquez, Lucy, and Maggie pile into the good living room and watch college football, while Alex and Kara head out to brunch for some well-deserved sister time, though once basketball season starts Alex is the first one in front of that TV. The neighbors aren't really up to speed with what's going on with the house and its residents (Maggie's overheard multiple people swearing that only 3 women live there, plus one neighbor who's convinced that every last one of the superfriends has a bedroom in the house), but they're welcoming enough regardless. (Except Terry, but Joan, the elderly woman next door, assures them that Terry "doesn't have much going on up there, if you know what I mean.") Besides, what really matters is that they win the neighborhood Halloween decorating contest. Every. Single. Year.

Ask Meme Pt. 2
Chandler
one aspect about them i love: that he’s both insecure and supportive of Monica. His line about being willing to “maintain” Monica, even though she’s high maintenance is my favorite.
one aspect i wish more people understood about them: that he’s a very loving person despite being insecure and hiding lots of things behind jokes.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character: Wanting Monica to have a big surprise for her birthday, I think he would totally do something like make her a cake, and even though it might not be perfect (like I could see his writing “Happy birthday, Monica” being squiggly and crooked) she’d still love it.
one character i love seeing them interact with: Monica or Joey
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more: Phoebe
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character:  Eventually, Chandler learned to  like Thanksgiving again and every year, he and Monica do something different for it: sometimes they order out, sometimes it’s traditional, and sometimes, it’s other different food groups. When they cook, they always do it together.
Jay
one aspect about them i love: How willing he is to be friends with the ghosts
one aspect i wish more people understood about them: yes, he may be close to his mom, but I definitely don’t think that had any negative effect (that we’ve seen so far.) I think it’s good that they’re close.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character: I think he’s a big ghost story reader at the very least or something like that because of how willing he is to ghost bond.
 as well as
one character i love seeing them interact with: Pete!
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more: I think he and Alberta would be interesting too.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character: I can totally see him and Pete convincing Sam to go away for the weekend or something and letting Jay be alone with the ghosts. Even though it would be difficult, it would ideally be some time after Halloween where something could happen that would give him the ability to at least hear the ghosts (so he can have a different experience than Sam) so he’s not completely in the dark anymore.
Sam
one aspect about them i love: Like Jay (although in a more understated way), how open she is to having ghosts in her house and making them part of her life.
one aspect i wish more people understood about them: I think her difficulties with her mother kind of stopped her from being able to be completely open with people and lying instead because of a fear of how they’d respond (see: Jay and DND.) It’s not a good habit but it’s not out of total malice. She just wants to avoid the frustration of being scolded or misunderstood.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character: that one day, she’s gonna take a job doing an article about a house that’s supposedly haunted for its anniversary or something, and then she’ll help solve some old murder mystery that no one has been able to (which will then make her prepared to help more with Alberta. I just love her working with ghosts outside Woodstone Manor.)
 as well as
one character i love seeing them interact with: Either Isaac or Alberta
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more: I know this is coming (or at least I hope it is): More mother-daughter Sam and Hetty!
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character:  Given how invested she seems to be with Isaac and Nigel and their whole relationship, I definitely believe she’d make getting them even more together a priority (and keeping them together). Including relationship tips and dates. Jay would probably get involved eventually too.

…the ugly. SYAC: The Master Review 4
Last post I covered much of what I consider the good or passable strips of SYAC of the pre-Dobbear era. What I have admittedly not covered yet, were three certain characters of the strip that exist beside Dobson.
Persistent Pam
Tumblr media
 Curmudgeonly Carl
Tumblr media
And… this guy I am not even sure has a name.
Tumblr media
No, seriously. He shows up in like the 61th strip of the series for the first time and yet I never see his name mentioned once
Tumblr media
All I know is that he is an accountant, who pities Dobson (for good reason)
Tumblr media
And despite Dobson not liking alcohol, they regularly meet up in a bar as if they are some late 80s comedy duo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Funnily enough, he shows up way before Pam, who would have her premiere in these strips
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And despite only showing up in a few strips after her premiere (mostly to make “fun” of overbearing and snarky commissioners I suppose…)
Tumblr media
She actually managed something no other character or series by Dobson managed to get: A fanclub
Tumblr media
Not that she would really be of any major importance afterwards.
As for Carl, he is supposed to be something like an antagonistic embodiment of Dobson’s “old” art teachers and people being stuck in old ways, who shows up for the following strips forming a sort of arc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition, it is very obvious, that Carl is supposed to be a mockery of people flaming Dobson. Not helped by the fact that THIS character sheet of him made by Dobson assures us, that there were quite a few even less “endorsing” things he wanted to name the character.
Tumblr media
Yet funnily enough, Carl turned into such a popular character with readers, Dobson was essentially “forced” to make him reappear in other strips. Not of the “classical” SYAC strips, but he showed up as the “antagonist” to Tenku in the storydriven multi pagers. Though even antagonist is a strong word, as he is essentially more of a jerkish art teacher and college advisor who is harsh on Tenku, but actually has his best interests in mind. To the point he even offers him to be his “harsher” art critic in the years till he enters college, because he wants to see him grow artistically.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, Carl was also more of an “accident”. Cause when it came otherwise to tackling criticism or things that irked Dobson (and were not anime related) he would end up more or less creating strips that painted him in a manner where he would supposedly always look like “the better” compared to his opposition or mock it. Which is where a lot of the irk Dobson would earn over the years eventually comes from.
Now to be fair, I do not want to call every comic in that regard “strawmanning”, nor do I want to say that Dobson doesn’t have the right to also mock to a certain extend the mentality of certain “snobs” and so on. For example…
Tumblr media
On one hand, I know there are people out there who think they are “special” by having the best tools at their disposal. When in reality you can achieve good results also with less expensive stuff. So mocking that sort of attitude is fine to me to some extend
BUT, when you also make down the line a comic like this…
Tumblr media
… essentially making yourself come off as a “better” artist or person than others because you have “chosen” the better mass produced crap (btw, that is coming from someone who types this review on a Mac that runs Windows) , then the hypocrisy ends up to be rather strong with you.
Which is also essentially the biggest issue with the strips I am about to show. The hypocrisy of Andrew Dobson. And no, I do not mean the tumblr blog by that. I mean the simple fact, that the content of some of the soon to follow strips gets kinda muddled when you take into consideration some of the things real life Dobson had said and done either at the time or in the years to come. Well that and the way how he tries to mock issues people have with his work, not realizing how he is essentially just reassuring those “silly critics” in their opinions while making his flaws more obvious to people that may have been previously unaware of them.
But enough talk, let me just show you in quick succession examples to confirm said point.
Tumblr media
Considering Dobson’s longterm disdain for DnD you have to wonder what the joke really is outside of him portraying DnD players as ugly nerds, supposedly too geeky even for him. Which is hilarious in hindsight as he would years later become a fan of TAZ among other things.
Tumblr media
Less hypocritical but the set up is kinda flawed. Like, you are obviously at a convention trying to sell stuff. Why would some old dude not interested in “kids crap” be at the convention anyway? Is he just bringing someone there and just wants to go, but first needs time to belittle your life choices?
Tumblr media
Rather hilarious in hindsight to me. Cause for someone claiming he has ideas that last for a life time and who seems rather distraught on the idea of others giving their input, he turned out to be so in need of ideas. Alex ze Pirate e.g. became from 2015 onward only defined by Dobson talking about the sexualities of his characters (and not even in comic as by that point it was discontinued, but rather in tweets and so on). Formera, which ran heavily on cheap shonen anime tropes ended up cancelled after two volumes, Cabin Rest was a failure after 20 strips, 2019 he relied primarily on cheap comics about Miraculous Ladybug and his understanding of certain genres is so bad, he can’t even think up the most basic ideas for a magical girl story.
Tumblr media
Weirdly enough, that pitch of a garbage truck driver who fights crime? I think that could make for an enjoyable short story about a vigilante a la the Punisher or Sin-City.
Tumblr media
The way Dobson perceives criticism, while also essentially giving a quick rundown how he appreciated criticism in his childhood way better than in adulthood. Yeah, because criticism by your parents as a kid was always VERY constructive. (looks back at certain drawings from own childhood) brrr. And sorry Dobson, but sometimes criticism by strangers is better than criticism from friends. Cause friends may mince their words. Plus people have over time given you quite some insightful criticism aside “U SUX” when it comes to comics. You were just never willing to listen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey Dobson, you hear that? That is the sound of your career, dying and no one caring.
Yeah, I think someone who made such “brilliant” comedy as in these comics, totally has the right not to listen to what seems to be solid theoretical advice.
Tumblr media
BTW, that Talus comic… I swear to god the worst “joke” Dobson ever told.
Tumblr media
Wow. You essentially make a point why you suck at drawing. While still not trying to change.
Tumblr media
And as someone else once said: Don’t play with fire if you can’t deal with the heat, BLOCK-son!
Tumblr media
This is not how I perceived your shit over the years. See, on one hand it is true that Alex ze Pirate e.g. has its own webpage to read the comic for free. HOWEVER most of his comics Dobson would hide from the start behind a paywall. The idea being that he would e.g. put a small reading sample of 10-15 pages up somewhere and then expect people to buy his comic for full price to get the rest. And you know, if you are e.g. a professionally published writer, that is fine. But when your average art output looks like THIS
Tumblr media
And you expect people to pay more than 10 dollars for something that is only around 70 pages long while most people can get 200+ pages for the same amount of money that look like this…
Tumblr media
You can frankly go and screw yourself.
Tumblr media
On one hand I get that the joke is meant to be, that as an independent content creator you may find yourself in a weird spot where your “child friendly” work may be put in a palace between edgier stuff other creators sell at conventions. On the other hand, I find it rather insulting in hindsight, that self declared feminist Andrew Dobson portrays such competition as either psychopathic murderers or stereotypical cartoon bimbos. If modern day Dobson saw the same strip by any other person, he would be insulted on behalf of the female that she is portrayed as a bimbo, when she could also be a very smart and attractive woman who knows how to tell brave and sexy stories.
Also, I have read your “child friendly” stuff, Dobson. I would call Atea or Alex abusive bitches who like to bully orphans but child friendly? Not to forget that your work is so basic and shallow in depth, it’s like the someone tried to create a chimera out of some of the worst traits associated with Dora the Explorer, 80s toodler cartoons and the Fairly Oddparents.
Tumblr media
I frankly hate this theory on comedy. It is true, a lot of comedy can be deprived from conflict, misunderstandings etc. Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry and other cartoons as well as screwball comedies such as Rat Race can depend on it. Heck, one of my favorite comedians of all time is Christopher Titus, who based his entire career on the misery and absurdity of his life.
But comedy is not just defined by misery and conflict.
There are for example also the following theories when it comes to comedy…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And to get back e.g. to Titus, yes, he has build a lot of his comedy on the bad stuff that happened in his life. But he is also someone who in his comedy has build a lot of punchlines on the absurdity of certain situations he has been in life but which in a way have enriched his life positively.
What I am trying to say is, comedy (and entertainment in that regard) does not just have to be defined by misery. And all things considered Dobson, you could have really tried to also just make comics wherein either you or your characters are just happy with their situation in life.
For example, this page from an Owl House fancomic?
Tumblr media
I think it holds more entertainment value than your “joke” right here, despite not even telling a joke.
Simply because as a page overall, it tries to convey a positive emotion. Which is more than I can say about the strip.
Tumblr media
Because of a lack of different level of thickness regarding your lines, which would trick people into perceiving depth, the fact that the fill bucket and shade layers can only do so much to cover for the rather monochromatic dull nature of your comic, the fact that your characters are not really all that complex and look rather simplicstic even compared to stuff from a comic like this…
Tumblr media
And that is just coming from the top of my head as someone who never studied art. If any reader has something to add, I am willing to listen
Tumblr media
And considering you could in later years never keep up to any release schedule, which among other things resulted in only three SYAC strips in total being released in 2016, I say go fuck yourself. Not to forget that even some of the worst newspaper comic strips out there tend to actually find a decent following and good jokes eventually, otherwise they would not manage to stay popular for years, if not even decades.
Tumblr media
As someone who has worked internships a lot in life, I just want to say fuck you in all our names. Glad to see you having just as much respect for interns than any other scumbag on the planet. Probably even less respect, cause you know, in some places interns tend to get paid.
Also, there is supposedly an entire real world story going on about Dobson having worked at his former university at the time the comic came out and Chaz is based on a fellow intern.
Things are unfortunately rather vague in that regard and only hold up by demonstrative evidence such as the name of Chaz showing up in certain pages of the university and Dobson’s internship being mentioned somewhere.
Tumblr media
Well, would you look at that: People have different opinions on your stuff.
Tumblr media
There are ways to draw memes funny and then there are ways to fail at them
Tumblr media
 You failed.
Tumblr media
Funnily enough, that comic rings a lot truer to text than you expect. Considering how Dobson would often emulate certain aesthetics in his comics of shows that were rather passee by the time he published his stuff, plus how he will obsess over certain trends and games for years to come (like Skyrim or his Quiet Hate Boner) while also being unaware about current trends (how do you e.g. not have heard of My Hero Academia by 2018 at least once by accident?) Dobson has always been kinda late to the party. Missing the “zeitgeist” of nerd culture and as such never quite finding an audience.
Tumblr media
Yeah, what Pam says. Not helped by the fact that yes, the floating eyebrows are real. Look at some earlier sketches or “professionally published” comics by his and you will see that each time characters get excited, their eyebrows will suddenly split into sets of three and float higher than Pennywise’s victims.
Tumblr media
Ironically, that fits real life Dobson at the time and later on even more so than this comic version did. Sorry, but what am I supposed to call a person who has an hate boner on anime for years for superfluous reasons, made Danny and Spot a “gaming webcomic” deliberately to piss on non Nintendo fans and has admitted in some by now deleted youtube video, that he kept a list of usernames from an old forum just to remember even years later the people that were mean to him online?
Tumblr media
Fuck both of you. I do not expect the Sixtin Chapel in the background, but something to filll up the empty space behind you is at times needed.
Tumblr media
The comic here is actually called politics. … ironic how things changed once a certain reality show host turned president.
Tumblr media
Jesus Christ. I am not even that much of a Transformers fan (Prime fan for life however) but even I know that this is not supposed to be what you design the head of a Transformer like. Not even if they ever produce the Transformers equivalent of Teen Titans Go.
Tumblr media
Too bad you still can’t stand the heat, otherwise you wouldn’t have completely disappeared last year.
Tumblr media
When you know you are in a no win situation, and still manage to choose an even dumber option to escape. I really don’t get it. I just think the Portal reference makes the comic dated and Dobsn’s attempt at a smug face looks so stupid. Like his cheeks are falling in and his mouth is about ready to get raped by a garden hose or something.
Tumblr media
Yeah, considering Dobson’s later constant need for safe spaces and to be in control of a situation and the narrative, which led to so many blocks over the years… if you know anything about Dobson, how this comic becomes harsher in hindsight is rather self explanatory. I just want to say one thing: There is a difference between genuine agoraphobia and just wanting to be by yourself. And I think Dobson just prefers the later on average. Which is okay, but humans still need to interact with other human beings in one form or another, even just for the sake of keeping their mental health stable. Why do you think are so many people getting depressed in times of covid lockdowns, despite many having all sorts of technical gimmicks at their disposal to at least keep boredom at bay?
And by putting himself into a bubble like that, I think Dobson has deprived himself of some of the most basic human interaction, which was likely a severe factor in his mental degeneration over the last years.
Tumblr media
It is still a valid suggestion! Just draw some cartoon characters or a nice fantasy scenario on a mural and earn yourself some bucks. Just be sure they are not by Disney or the Mouse will tear down the school!
Tumblr media
… Just google up the words Andrew Dobson and Samus Aran commission by ED and you will see how this comic just further shows how much Dobson seems to actually be proud of being an unproductive asshole.
And by the way, I know that any form of artistic work takes time. Just writing these review posts takes a lot of time for me. But that doesn’t change the fact that people should post and create stuff in a timely fashion, especially when there are e.g. deadlines to hold up too. And by the way, Sloth’s don’t have fingers, they have claws!
And that is it.
Sorry if I missed anything folks, but I just saw how many pages in word this is already filling up, so I call quits for this part here right now. I think I made my point about how Dobson trying to badly deflect arguments people may make against his art and work ethics via jokes clear enough, while also showing some posts that are either harsher or hilarious in hindsight.
Next time we will however address one certain issue about our main character, that has been not directly addressed here. In the meantime, have a little fun video that shows hopefully how entertainment and a certain amount of comedy can be gained NOT via misery.

@daelenn i'm actually gonna give this its own post i think
but, hmmmm
i mean marisha and liam are definitely up there
several of them have powerful energies that aren't feral energies
but okay, i think i'll go with this:
1 - marisha. takes no shit from anyone. extremely strong force of personality. jumps all over the set when playing, incapable of sitting still or not screaming over stuff. see: hitting liam in the face, falling off the bench at the feeblemind moment, perching on her chair constantly, all the times near the end of campaign one where it would get too much and she'd just get up and walk around. "if someone told me five years ago i was gonna be a part of a global dnd phenomenon, i probably would have punched them in the face. and then asked them for gas money."
she's an incredible, creative, good at leading, excited feral, but feral nonetheless.
2 - liam. i mean, you can like feel the feral coming off of this guy. especially prominent when dressing up for liveshows, creating fictional storylines designed to torture his friends, and being angry at current us politics on twitter. like, don't get me wrong, he's a wonderful, loving, gentle human being, they all are. but like... the feral lurks constantly under the surface. whoever decided to sit liam and marisha next to each other for this campaign was a mad genius
3 - sam. now this is sort of where we stop ranking them by feral and start ranking them by chaos. marisha and liam aside, i wouldn't necessarily use the word feral for any of these guys? but sam definitely has the most feral energies of the remaining cast, like... we can talk forever about how good he is at causing chaos on the show, but before you even get to him playing dnd, consider his shirts and his ads. consider that he once put whipped cream on toothpaste and ate it. sam what the fuck.
4 - laura. an extraordinarily talented actress, and, like sam, uses these gifts to cause complete and utter chaos. on the whole, she’s a bit too put together to qualify as feral, but in terms of unpredictability, she beats out everyone. even matt struggles to play jester because he can never figure out what she’s going to do next. this is also extremely useful for laura when she wants to pull some crazy game bending shit, that no one will ever be able to get over. is she feral? perhaps not. is she capable of making everyone else feral? absolutely.
5 - ashley. ashley is one of the quietest players at the table, you won’t even see her until like halfway through the episode when she pulls out a hilarious one liner or a shocking character choice and grabs everyone’s attention. points deducted for overall aura of chill, but definitely added for sheer audacity, and also for how much i love her. the fact that she statistically has the most feral characters is also a point in her favour
6 - travis. a lot of any feralness travis has probably owes itself to being an adhd actor and sports fan from texas. like... that’s a lot of things for a person to be at once, that aren’t necessarily all conflicting, but certainly add up to quite a picture. and that picture is travis willingham. i love him? i think he’s got a good balance of feral and not, shown pretty well in the fact that he has the most feral vox machina character and the least feral mighty nein character. i wouldn’t describe him as a feral person overall, but he’s a big fan of causing chaos (and honestly really fucking good at it), so i think that adds to it a little too. (and also, he loves werewolves)
7 - matt. matt is not feral. matt has two modes, extremely competent actor and disaster human, and he can only be one at any given time. we mostly see the former, as he’s the DM and has to control this chaos, but i love the content we get where he’s not in DM mode and we realise how much of a disaster he is. has his moments of chaos, but on the whole a good and necessary balance to the rest of this squad. he’s also just like soft and full of love
8 - taliesin. i mean, taliesin has incredibly powerful energies, undeniably, but i feel like rather than being feral they were designed to keep feral contained. taliesin was there for the invention of the word feral, looked whatever beast earned that name in the eyes, and won without a fight. feral is terrifying because you can see the thing you know you can’t control, taliesin works near exclusively in the realm of the unseen
(though he does get points for every story he has to share about being a weird queer teen in hollywood and the various drug related and/or criminal escapades he somehow got up to. i mean, immortal jokes aside, taliesin has lived a life.)

Been thinking about the modernization of the narrative of Good Omens from the novel to the TV series prompted by those last posts.  DISCLAIMER: its actually been a while since i either watched the TV show or read the book so i might be misremembering stuff 😅
If i remember correctly, in the early stages of production of the TV show Neil Gaiman stated the aesthetics of Heaven and Hell were being updated to be less like countries at war, as they were in the novel, and more like factions of a corporation, with Heaven being the top office and Hell being the basement.  And he said this was to representing the shifting social anxieties of the time - the novel was written on the heels of the Cold War, and so has a lot of spy and soldier aesthetic to it, whereas nowadays we are all looking with a skeptical eye at Disney and Nestle as large corporations do whatever the hell they want without consequences.
I think this modernization is an effective one, but one that changes the flavor of the narrative slightly, and in a way that makes it less appealing to some people and more appealing to others.  One is not necessarily better than the other, and given one is a new TV show and one is an old novel so it’s hardly accurate to compare the size of fanbases, I can’t even say one is necessarily more or less appealing/popular than the other.  I think that the TV show was well-made, but there were a few small key changes in the writing that move the narrative away from the reasons why I got absolutely obsessed with the novel.  I think that David Tennant and Michael Sheen did a pretty good job acting the directions and script they were given, my main things I don’t like are kind of with the writing decisions (and tbh the costuming still but that’s petty 🙄)
I think it’s probably part of my upbringing, which was fundamentalist Protestant and honestly, obsessed with violence, that I don’t want to engage with a story where Hell is bad because it’s the dirty basement of an office building.  That’s a legit way to depict Hell, and one that has interesting thematical implications, but I personally want to read stories where Hell is fire and brimstone so that I can watch the protagonists defeat that.  I don’t fantasize about breaking free from an office job, or co-workers caught up in office petty politics, stories about finding softness and love amidst an actual war where violence is expected are what appeal to me.  The demons in the TV series are violent, but it’s just because they’re mean people, not because there’s a system put in place that forces them to be....which is honestly kind of part of why I liked the universe of the novel so much, because I liked to see Aziraphale and Crowley fight a system that tries to force them to be violent and fight and stuff?
The depiction of a narrative’s bad guy, even with subtle changes, can have some pretty significant impacts on how the audience feels about the narrative if what they’re looking for in the story is catharsis and wish-fulfillment.  For example, I often see people gripe about their DMs including homophobia and transphobia in their world-building in DnD, as though the ideal setting would be free from those things (and indeed, that’s the ideal setting for someone who wants escapism), but if you want to roleplay a character who struggles and overcomes those social issues, because they affect you in real life and you find it cathartic, constructing a world where those issues are very mild is not going to provide the same outlet that being victorious in a truly grimdark world is going to.  It’s not for everyone, but due to the novel’s vagueness about certain things, it allowed the fandom some level of flexibility in interpreting their version of the supernatural in whatever way they wanted (the only other angel we see “on screen” other than Aziraphale is Metatron, for like 3 pages, so it was really whatever your imagination cooked up to fill in those gaps), whereas the TV show fandom is working with more concrete building blocks.
This leads me to another gripe I have--making God female.  I understand this appealed hugely to a lot of people because they love the progressive implications of God not being male, and how it upsets religious bigots, but I honestly did not think this was super revolutionary or groundbreaking for the reason that Good Omens is a work of satire--it is criticizing God, and honestly?  I don’t think God is super kind and loving in either version of the story, Heaven is harsh and filled with asshole angels, Crowley was thrown out for just asking questions, and God plays games with his/her servants.  Not everyone sees it this way but I honestly feel like God in the GOmens universe is borderline abusive and gas-lighty, as a proxy criticism of the Christian Church, and the church has historically also been extremely misogynistic, so I think that aspect of it kind of falls apart when God is suddenly female.
That line about dinosaur bones being a joke that God played on humans hits differently when child-you went to a school that taught creationism in science class and thought you were going to hell if you didn’t believe what they told you.
But getting back to my main point, the TV show had the narrative updated for the times much more significantly than the radio play that came out in 2015--for that one, it was mostly cosmetic changes, such as tossing in a mention of X-boxes, whereas the TV show updated the basic narrative structure to reflect changing culture.  I think it was an effective change, but one that made the narrative less appealing to me personally.  A lot of people who were in the fandom before the TV show came out, or who just read the novel after watching the show to compare, seem to agree that the worldbuilding and the characterizations have subtle differences between the two incarnations, which to a casual consumer is not really that noticeable, but if you like one or the other because it hits a very specific sweet spot it might make a difference.  For me I liked it mostly because it provided a blank canvas with some very good building blocks for, like, my imagination to run off with, and the TV show closed a lot of those avenues by filling them in with something more concrete.  That’s not necessarily a bad thing and I can see myself experiencing this from the opposite side when I go into fandoms having just consumed the newest incarnation of a thing and quite liked it, only to find the fandom has people who liked it before that adaptation and hate it a lot!  That’s just the nature of the beast and an inevitable side effect of obsessing over something way more than you’re meant to, but it’s also why I’m not really interested in reading or writing fanfiction set in the TV ‘verse.  Anyway Im kind of rambling now but this is just kinda my thoughts and my onion so if anyone has any other thoughts on it feel free to share your onion with me too :)

in lieu of a commonplace book

what, again? i hear you cry. yeah, me too. this is a quick a roundup after the zeroth week of the term which is promising to be the most chaotic yet.
reading finished watership down! i get the reputation that this book has now, for making cute woodland creatures dark and dramatic-- but it was the mythological/linguistic/poetic stuff that i liked the most. the lapine vocab just always ended up...sounding and tasting very satisfying, good mouth feel. and at last section with the assault on efrafra was so stressful-- and the various twist endings!-- and i was glad to realize that i'd gotten personally invested in a couple of characters; seeing bigwig in the epilogue, having grown old, having survived, hit me hard.
i also finished the chosen and the beautiful, and turned around and have told everyone i talk to about it. i've also picked up aliette de bodard's in the vanisher's palace, and it has been reminding me incessantly about the d*sney film raya and the last dragon, which i watched a little bit of on the plane to nyc. like!! the world building, the dragons, the post-apoc setting, the big gay energy. this novel seems to only have characters who use she or they pronouns, and they address pronouns in some interesting ways too, to convey formality, register, intimacy between characters, etc. i wish the overall writing style was less variable though-- the geometry of the titular palace is meant to be anti-geometric, nausea-inducing, dizzying, and sometimes the jumps from scene to scene almost mirror that?
listening this is my memo to myself to click on my mutuals' music links more often. i took a chance on @girlfriendsofthegalaxy's cowboy-joke post of miya folick's "stop talking (about that boy)" and then spent a solid week on a miya folick kick, just listening to her same album premonitions. i don't know if i can shoehorn my dnd character's backstory into the lyrics of "deadbody", but something about the righteous fury in her voice, it really does feel like faertrin, and in my head it's an anthem for my weird little man. please listen to it for its own sake, though, the video makes it clear that it's really about domestic violence vel sim, not dnd revolutionaries.
youtube
watching nothing quite like getting to the end of the timeskip in the untamed in grand style, with lotus root and rib soup made by the inimitable @pep-squad-lizzie, a heartbreaking montero powerpoint by @dimir-charmer, dessert by @hematiterings, and emperor's smile by me, after nearly eight months of working on this show together. y'all. the catharsis. i can start posting things from my drafts folder now that Certain Characters are dead, thank god, i only have uhhhhh 1k drafts or so.
playing my dnd campaign one resumes tomorrow! they're all coming over to my back porch, for my first time hosting after being in this group for more than a year! i'm feeling extremely normal about this!
making a housemate and i threw some brownies together last night, while keeping out of the way as an outgoing housemate moved out-- it went fairly quickly, wasn't nearly as tense as i was afraid it was, and we sent them away with a mushy brownie piece each. phew.
working on in a rare moment of only having one (more or less) project to work on, i actually sent my prof a draft outline of the paper the same week i had planned to, as well as the updated draft of the intro essay with all the changes she asked for. now to...outline a diss proposal..........spent thursday being back in an academic library for the first time since march 2020, which was fine, even mildly comical as i watched new students try to navigate the stacks elevators, it was very like 'well this is business as usual and not even that nostalgic' up until i stepped into one of the classrooms in this particular niche topic-specific library on campus, which just looked so...hopeful and nervous and expectant, with its carefully marked seats and hand sanitizers. when will there be an in-person palaeography class in there again? not this fall. but the room is ready. :')

For the ship game - all the odds for Lorelai amd Aidan 😊
Tumblr media
1. How do they fall asleep? Wake up? Any daily rituals?
It depends on the night. If one is working at Fennel Fields later than the other, usually Adrian, Lorelei is usually already in bed. If that's the case, and its a cold night, Adrian 1000% strips down to his underwear and lays on top of Lor because she "helps warm him up." They usually cuddle a bit at night, but then go to their respective sides of the bed but they often wake up spooning.
3. Are they open about their relationship? How do they feel about public displays of affection?
At first, nope not at all because of hesitancy on Lorelei's end. Once that hesitancy is gone, they're a bit more touchy but not overly exaggerated public displays of affection.
5. Nicknames? Pet-names? Any in-jokes?
Adrian calls Lorelei Rory, and occasionally Lor. But it's usually Rory. Pet-name wise definitely babe but they also call each other dude a lot lol. Lorelei will call him sweetheart sometimes too.
7. What annoys them the most about their partner? Would they change it if they could?
It takes a lot for Adrian to snap, but when they first start dating, Lorelei is somewhat hesitant to fully open up to him. After talking about that, she comes around. Lorelei gets annoyed by Adrian's lack of common sense sometimes, but she wouldn't change it about him because it's part of who he is as a person.
9. Do they discuss big issues? Religion? Marriage? Children? Death?
Yes, absolutely. Religion not so much. But marriage, children and death? 1000%.
11. Do they celebrate holidays? Anniversaries?
They celebrate the big holidays and always celebrate their anniversary. (Even when Adrian somehow manages to forget it.)
13. What do they do for fun? Do they have a favorite activity or do they like to switch things up?
Does kicking ass count? Haha. When they're not working together to stop bad guys, they enjoy just being in the same room as each other. Adrian definitely teaches Lorelei how to play DND at one point though too.
15. How adventurous are they?
Ummm I'd say pretty adventurous. They're not afraid to try new things.
17. What would make them break up? Would it be permanent?
I'd say Lorelei holding back because of her past losses. If she didn't come around eventually? Then yeah, probably.
19. What do they fight about? What are their arguments like? How do they make up?
Usually its Adrian's irresponsibility. Lorelei really is afraid of losing him, so if he gets hurt, even if its not a bad injury, she kind of freaks out.
21. Do they share any interests or hobbies?
Once Adrian teaches her how to play DND, they play that on a weekly basis together.
23. How do they hug? Kiss? Tease? Flirt? Comfort?
Lorelei tends to be the one to initiate physical affection. At first, Adrian was hesitant when it came to hugs, but now he's quick to request loads of cuddles and affection from Lorelei. Lorelei almost always has to stand on her tip-toes to kiss Adrian because of their hight difference. Teasing wise, Lorelei tends to roast Adrian, but sometimes the teasing takes a flirtatious turn. Is she opposed to flirting and talking dirty to him when they're in the midst of taking down a bad guy because she knows it turns Adrian on? Most definitely not lol.
25. How much time do they spend together? Do they share their feelings or hold them in?
They spend a decent amount of time together but they don't need to actively be paying attention to the other. Just being in the same room is enough. Adrian was more open in the beginning, but he's managed to get Lorelei to share her feelings more rather than holding them in until she snaps.
27. Do they have kids? Grow old together? Split up?
They are definitely endgame and, while they don't plan on having kids, they do end up happening too.
29. How do they handle disasters or emergencies? Minor injuries? Sicknesses?
They both can handle disasters and emergencies pretty well, it comes with the job. Adrian is definitely one to mask how he's feeling when he's sick or injured. Lorelei tends to suck it up, but not as much as Adrian does.
31. Do they finish each others sentences? Pick up any phrases or habits from each other? Know when the other is hiding something?
Adrian definitely picks up on some of the phrases and habits Lorelei has. Adrian is a terrible liar, so Lorelei knows when he's hiding things right away.
33. What kind of presents do they get each other? Do they only do it on special occasions?
Presents tend to be more sentimental for them, but Adrian will sometimes get Lorelei something just because.
35. Do they bring out the best in each other or the worst? Do they have a fatal flaw?
They 1000% bring out the best in each other.
37. How much would they be willing to sacrifice for each other? Any lines they refuse to cross?
They would literally die for each other if it came down to it.
39. Who initiated the relationship? Who kissed who first? When did they realize they were in love?
Technically Adrian initiated because he hit on Lorelei at Fennel Fields from day one, but Lorelei resisted for a while before pretty much telling him that he was taking her out on a date one night after their shift. Lorelei kisses him first. It was definitely love at first sight for Adrian.
41. Are they party-goers? What are they like when they're drunk? Does it happen often?
They aren't party-goers per say but they'll go to one if they're invited. Adrian is even more of a goofball when he's drunk but I also picture him being pretty needy. Lorelei is much more laid-back and open when she's drunk.
43. Do they talk often? What about? Adrian doesn't really have an off switch so they definitely talk pretty often and about anything and everything.
45. Any special dreams or goals they have as a couple? Any heartbreaks? Regrets?
I can't think of any at the moment.
