The stupidest thing about feyre is that she loses her shit at rhys for not telling her they’re mates (which I actually think was decent of him? Not manipulating her with the bond or forcing it on her?) and ghosts him for over a week before making him grovel but she’s totally fine with him & madja deciding she’s too feeble & fragile to know about her own body & pregnancy and conspiring to let her die rather than tell her & risk her fetus’ life shapeshifting. Like. Sarah Janet have you heard of consistency

I’ve decided that from here forward I’m writing Tommy and Buck/Evan as long term canon. In the words of Buck himself “Who cares?!”
I get the feeling that Tommy is difficult to get really angry. Mostly based on his past. And his general roll with the punches attitude thus far. So I don’t foresee a lot of strife or fighting in his future with Buck. Except the first time Tommy experiences the after of that big marshmallow Evan Buckley doing something really dangerous and reckless..again.
And Tommy who never gets angry, who never shouts at Buck, who flew a helicopter into a goddamn hurricane in the middle of the ocean, really loses his shit this time because Buck cannot understand why Tommy is so upset that he dropped into a dangerous situation against orders AGAIN.
Tommy pinches the bridge of his nose to keep from shouting “Bobby told you not to go in. He told you not to risk it. That the floors were too unstable”
“There could have been someone left” Buck replies “Someone needed to check. It had to be me”
“Why? Because you’re fucking super human? The great Buck Buckley from the 118 who scoffs at danger, has survived a tsunami, getting trapped beneath a fire truck, throwing a blood clot, and was officially dead for three minutes after getting struck by FUCKING LIGHTNING!”
“How do you know about all of that?”
“That isn’t what matters”
“I think it is” Buck takes a step toward Tommy “Have you been stalking me babe?”
Noticing the mischievous smile Tommy shakes his head “Oh no no no. You are not going to adorable your way out of this”
Bucks shoulders sag and he sighs “I’m ok Tommy. Not even a scratch”
“I can see that” Tommy lets out a deep exhale “I understand the risks of the job. I’m not like your exes who would get all distraught over you removing a cat from a tree. But for fucks sake, you are worse than the EOD guys when I was in Afghanistan with the walking - or in your case running or jumping- right into the worst case scenario with no thought of your own safety” Rubbing his forehead he continues “Evan. You’ve got a savior complex and it’s noble and selfless..”
Buck cuts him off “It’s not a savior complex. I’m not stupid. I understand that sometimes no matter what you do you can’t save them. But sometimes maybe you can, and in those cases, I just make the most sense”
Tommy crosses his arms to keep from strangling him or kissing him stupid again to shut him up “How is that? How does you possibly dying make any sense?”
“They all have people that need them. They all have someone they belong to and..” he trails off with a small shrug
And Tommy hears the words he doesn’t say. He is…expendable. And just like that all of the anger drains out of Tommy to be replaced by a something else. “Evan” he says softly.
“I know” Buck interjects “I know that people love me and they would be sad, especially Maddie. And I don’t want to die. But I don’t want someone who has someone they need, and that needs them, to die either. I couldn’t live with that”
Tommy closes his eyes. This man..How can he be so adorable and selfless, yet so completely stubborn and a pain in the ass about his own safety?
Once he calms his thoughts and finds the words he wants to say, he opens his eyes to see Evan looking at him calmly. Like he expects Tommy to see the sense in what he said.
“Evan. I know we haven’t really put a label on this. On us. But that’s because I don’t want to pressure you. I’m the first man you’ve been with and you’re still figuring out who you are, and I understand that. But let me clarify something for you. I need you to come back to me. Ok?”
Buck blinks “Huh”
“I need you to come back to me” he repeats “Like Bobby needs Athena, and Karen needs Hen, and yes like Maddie needs Chimney.
“And Jee-un. Jee-yun needs her dad”
“Yes, and in that same vein, Christopher needs Eddie” he agrees, trying not to give in to his exasperation. “I need you. I am that person who needs you to come home Evan”
Evan stops whatever he was about to say. Startled awareness creeping into his eyes..Tommy sees a mix of emotions flit across his face. Surprise, joy, fear, everything just races across that expressive face and then Evan sinks onto the barstool at his kitchen island. His hands coming up to cover his face.
Tommy’s stomach clench’s. He pushed too hard, too soon “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. I do care and want you to come home but..”
Buck looks up at him “Don’t you dare take that back”
“I’m not taking it back. I just don’t want to push you”
Something else crosses Evans face at that..but he tugged at his bottom lip with his teeth. “You aren’t pushing. You aren’t pressuring me. I am in this just as much as you. I just don’t know how to say what I want to say without it sounding lame and emo as shit”
“Did you just hear me? You can say anything to me Evan. Whatever it is”
Buck rolls his bottom lip between his teeth again. “I’ve never questioned why I do this…I mean it’s the whole reason I was born. To save my brother. To save Daniel. That’s what I do, that’s who I am. It’s why I became a firefighter. To be the one who saves people. The 118 is my family. And I would do anything to protect them from harm”
“I’m not asking you to stop. I would never ask that. I just want to remind you that you matter to a lot of people, and you also have someone who is waiting for you”
Bucks voice is thick “I know that. I get that. But…Nobody has ever. I have never belonged to anyone, like that”
In a sense of deja vu Tommy closes the short distance to Buck. Tipping his face up, he kisses him. Not soft and gentle like their first kiss in this kitchen. But bold and deep. Branding Evan with his mouth. Pulling back he says fiercely “You belong to me like that. For as long as you want..you belong to me and I belong to you, like that”
“I will ALWAYS need you to come back to me Evan”

Firefighter Percy! - Telling his mom
What if Percy wanted to become a firefighter? How would Sally Jackson react?
~3 to 4 minute read (short)
21 year old Percy Jackson sat at his old kitchen table in his parents’ New York City Apartment. Next to him was Annabeth, his girlfriend of almost 6 years. On the other side of the table sat his mother, Sally, his step-dad, Paul, and his 4 year old sister, Estelle, who was coloring.
Percy was nervous. He had something to tell his mom, and he had no idea how she was going to react. Annabeth told him it would be okay, but he truly just had no idea what to expect.
They’d gotten through dinner and were now talking and catching up. He loved his visits to New York. Him and Annabeth had considered moving back, now that they’re almost done with New Rome University, but they decided that they are going to get a place in New Rome. That is, assuming his mom doesn’t kill him tonight.
“Percy, you’ve been quiet tonight.” Sally glanced at him with concerned eyes. He hated how easily she and annabeth could read him. How do people do that?
He took a deep breath and sipped his soda. “Uh, yeah. I have something to tell you.” He felt Annabeth squeeze his hand from under the table.
Paul and Sally looked at him expectantly. Estelle continued to scribble in her coloring book, having no interest whatsoever in the conversation.
He glanced at Annabeth, and she gave him an encouraging nod. He took a deep breath. “Okay, here goes. I want to be a firefighter. I’m going to be a firefighter. Not forever. Just while I’m figuring out what I want to do with my life.” He looked her in the eyes. “I just- I can really help! I’m fire resistant. I can control water, so I can help put out fires more quickly. I’m tall and athletic. I’m really fast. I’m strong, too. And I think quick on my feet in dangerous situations. I’m perfect for the job, especially given my powers. I can really do good by this. And I- well- what do you think?” He looked at her with uncertainty.
Sally stared at him blankly, for what felt like several minutes, but was probably just a few seconds. Paul didn’t say anything either. He usually did this: waited to react until Sally did so first. When it came to Percy, he always followed her lead as his parent.
When his mom finally spoke, his stomach dropped at tone of her voice. If sounded like pain. No… worse. It was betrayal.
“You want to run into burning buildings? On purpose? Not becasue you’re forced to for a quest, but becasue you want to? You want to risk your life on a daily basis? You’ve survived all that you have and- are you trying to get yourself killed?”
His heart broke at the wounded look she was giving him. “I- No! No mom. I want to help people. I want to use my abilities for something good. And like I said, I can’t really be burned. I’m way safer than-
“I don’t care that you can’t be burned, Percy! You could die from smoke inhalation! Or toxic gasses! Things explode. Buildings collapse. I watched from right down the street as hundreds of firefighters ran into the towers and never came out. Firefights die! You could die, Percy!”
Percy felt sick. His heart raced. He couldn’t even look at his mom’s face. He all of a sudden felt guilt beyond belief. After all he’s been through - after all he’s put her through - he felt terrible about even considering it. How could he put her through any more than he already has?
The room was tense. Everybody was unsettled. And it was completely his fault.
“I won’t do it. I- I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking. I’ll call them tomorrow and tell-
“Oh be quiet.” Sally dismissed him. She seemed to be at war with her own emotions. “I said I didn’t like it, I didn’t say you shouldn’t do it.”
Percy was now confused. A feeling he was very familiar with, being the boyfriend of a daughter of Athena.
Sally looked at him, carefully considering her next words. “Is this something you really want to do?”
Percy looked his mom in the eyes, channeling every bit of sincerity and determination that he had. “Yes. I really think I need to do this, Mom.”
Sally closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She took a minute to compose herself, and seemed to be willing her mindset to change. He’d seen it before - when he had asked her for her blessing to bare the curse of achilles, all those years ago.
She let out a sound that was something between an exasperated sigh and a laugh. She shook her head in a way that said I should have expected nothing less from you.
“Well okay.” She said with a new - slightly forced - confidence and optimism. She reached across the table and took his hand, looking at him with a mix of emotions: uncertainty, fear, love, and tremendous pride. “You’ll be a firefighter, then.”
He squeezed her hand, and she gave him a small watery smile.
“I better get lots of pictures of you looking all handsome in your uniform.”
Annabeth laughed. “I’m already on it.”
Percy felt relief flood through him. Usually he would roll his eyes at that exchange, but he was so happy that he found himself smiling.
Paul chuckled and lifted his glass. “To Percy, and to his safety as he begins this new adventure.”
Everyone raised their glasses.
Estelle finally looked up from her coloring book and gave percy a very serious look. “Are you gonna get a polka-dot doggy?”

Round 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda for Gwynne:
I mean were it not for Chef chickening out, she would have fully succeeded in engineering a plan to kill absolutely every powerful person in the world of Galavant except for Galavant and Isabella and Sid who hadn't arrived yet but she later gets on just fine with.
My money’s on Gwynne. She’s got the brains and ruthlessness to carry out schemes while also being sincere enough to form alliances that won’t betray her, and being a servant means others will underestimate her until it’s too late
Gywnne already thinks she's in GOT tbh. Her poisoning plot is very red wedding. She failed because she's in Galavant.
Gwyn is smart enough to avoid situations that would put her in danger. She keeps allies at arms length and avoids enemies, can throw down if she needs to but knows to do that as a last resort, and most importantly: knows when to hit the fucking bricks.
Honestly I think Gwynne is crafty enough and she's in a low enough position people won't expect her (or suspect her). She's not royalty or a fighter
Not only would Gwynne survive GOT, she would win it. She DID win it when she nearly killed every significant character and threat to her, she only failed because Chef was in Galavant and not GOT. (But a reminder that she would then have killed Madalena, another of the people's top choices for winner here. I don't think she'd bother taking out Tad Cooper because he's nice but there's good reasons to assume he'd die in a GOT world.)
Propaganda for Tad Cooper:
In bearded dragon form no one would bother with him since he's nonthreatening. In dragon form he'd be a target but he's also a dragon and breathes fire so he'd certainly be able to fight back. It's established that Galavant has killed a dragon, so clearly there is an in-universe way to kill dragons but it's also told as a brag so it's got to be difficult at least.
tad cooper’s gonna win solely because he isn’t enough of an apparent threat for anyone to kill on GOT until he’s grown up
I think tad cooper’s gonna win solely because I SUPER BELIEVE IN YOU TAD COOPER!
Tad Cooper is a big target by nature of being a goddamn dragon. Everyone and their mother would be coming up with a strategy to take him out. What's worse, he's a loyal dragon--more specifically, he's loyal to Absolute Buffoon™ King Richard. By nature of Richard being a figure in power many would want deposed and his biggest piece of protection being a living WMD that Richard's enemies would be planning to take out first, I'm afraid Tad Cooper is toast.
We've got to remember that Tad Cooper isn't a dragon that no one is after, he's either a totally defenseless little creature that no one's after or he's a threatening dragon that everyone would be after. And even in his defenseless and unthreatening state, he's probably in the blast zone of any attacks on Richard since he's kept in Richard's coat, and let's be real, Richard would be being attacked so much.
He nearly did die in the finale of Galavant when Wormwood smacks him from Richard's hand, he just survives because it's Galavant not GOT.

The Experience Of Watching Wild Blue Yonder When It’s Your First Time Watching Doctor Who
Oh right this is Doctor Who. Cool
WELL THAT WAS QUITE THE BURNING TARDIS CRASH, WASN’T IT
Oh I don’t trust that robot thing. Don’t like that. Don’t like that at all
Well, guess the Doctor’s bi.
WAIT, the Tardis is just gone?
It’s gone because it’s so dangerous to be in this environment
Ok, I don’t like this hall. I like that its special effects aren’t entirely convincing, but this hall’s vibes are concerning
I feel like the temperature probably means something
DON’T SPLIT UP
Right that’s not Donna. I barely even know her name’s Donna, but that’s definitely not Donna. Why’s she standing so still? Where’s her accent gone? Why do none of her questions seem to follow each other? What does this have to do with the unknown threat?!
“My arms are too long” Oh fuck. I bet that’s not David Tennant David Tennant either, is it?
“My arms are too long” No, it’s not
That’s an interesting jaw and knee situation you’ve got there, guys
“Hungry” Oh no. RUN
Huh, so both this and Nativity! (2009) feature a golf cart chase. I wasn’t expecting that similarity
Is this what it’s like for Doctor Who fans?
NO the thing and it’s weird moving walls
So you’re just wandering about in the dark trying to find actual David Tennant and not “is going to eat you” David Tennant?
Ok, the tie thing seems like something he’d do
But that’s not Donna.
No David she’s making you emotionally vulnerable and that’s not Donna!
What human person uses this for an opportunity for a deep chat. IT’S NOT HER. RUN
Ah no I’ve been fooled by the tie
Weird-funny-scary backwards run here we go
Oh this is like that Spiderman meme
YES THEY FOUND EACH OTHER
Why do you just have this thing of salt, David? Was there like, a reason that I missed or does he just have this?
Oh I never knew they have to count and that’s why they can’t cross it
Oh yeah. I forgot you can blow away salt.
RUN AGAIN
Yeah, why are they chasing you?
Don’t Think? Wow I wouldn’t survive in Doctor Who
Ah no, medically-licensed David Tennant can’t either
Oh fuck that’s a being of some sort
It’s dead. I think
Oh the Captain.
A BOMB. WHAT DO YOU MEAN A BOMB?
STOP THINKING DAVID
RUN. AGAIN
Oh no, evil David Tennant can go on all fours
A DONNA FIGHT
THIS IS SO TENSE
Which Donna?
It reminds you of Mr Bean
Oh no
YOU’VE GOT THE WRONG ONE
IS SHE ACTUALLY GOING TO DIE?!!
SHE’S TURNING TOWARDS THE FIRE AND ACCEPTING HER FATE THIS IS TOY STORY 3 ALL OVER AGAIN
“Your arms are too long” You noticed!
Ah, Donna has been saved
Huh. The Tardis is more white than I pictured it
Poor unfortunate David Tennant. None of his characters are having a good time right now
Bernard Cribbins!
He’s right, everything’s alright now Bernard Cribbins is here
Wait what
It’s The End Of The World?!
What do you mean?

Yeah also when everyone looks like they are bidding him goodbye when he enters the carriage for castle Dracula, he writes "if this diary survives me, let it bring Mina my goodbye". He took their fears seriously from day ONE
Oh for real!
I also think like the broader phenomena of making fun of people in horror media for not realizing they're in danger is kind of strange. Like there is of course a time honoured tradition of horror protagonists foolishly walking into danger for easy kills, but I think people look for the trope where it isn't there because they expect it. Also it's definitely a way to relieve tension by being like, well that wouldn't happen to me because I'm smarter than that! But that's silly because you don't live in a horror movie. And if you lived your life expecting to be in a horror movie you'd be living in fear of so many minor things. Like, if I'm walking to work in the dark, and I get a bad feeling and think I see an unsettling figure up ahead (happens to me sometimes because I have bad eyesight and many things look like a creepy guy in the dark) I can't turn around and go home because what if that's a murderer and I'm in a horror movie. I have to get to work! Because like all horror protagonists I don't Think I'm in a horror movie, so until I actually know that I'm in a life or death situation, my priorities are going to be the mundane regular life stuff going on over protecting myself, because I have no reason to believe yet that I have something to protect myself from.
This is especially funny because I was in the Magnus Archives fandom for a bit and got to witness everyone mocking or criticizing the protagonist for the exact opposite. He found out the person who had previously had his job was murdered, became paranoid and stalked his assistants thinking they had something to do with it. And one of them had been replaced by a monster! He found this out because he searched her desk and found evidence she'd hidden! But everyone was still like. Wow what a stupid idiot, wrecking his relationships and risking losing his job (the job he can't lose and also thinks might get him killed) over what he believes is a threat to his life.
There's no winning as a horror protagonist. Because that's the point! That's the horror. You're trapped, whatever action you're going to take is not going to get you out of danger, because you're in a horror story, and everything you do inevitably takes you closer to the confrontation with the monster. Even when you're running away you're just running towards them.
Good writers can make this happen with the characters still making their best effort to protect themselves, less good ones will have characters stand around and wait to die because they can't get there organically.
But either way an audience is gonna sit on the outside looking in and call you a fool for walking towards your own death when that's the only path that exists. And that's the real horror.

I may fill in the info boxes on the right but oh well
Apocalypse Vanessa reference go brrr
This is going to be an info dump so don’t expect it to be organized lmfao
CW: Mentions of Child Death(first paragraph only I believe), Violence
Living in a society that’s fallen isn’t exactly ideal but Vanessa makes due with what she has,png since having been desensitized to the death and violence a long time ago. Although it came at a cost. When the apocalypse first started, Vanessa lost her little sister; Sarah to a horde. Not only seeing her sister die but having to be the one to kill Sarah’s reanimated body. It was a strong and sharp blow that Vanessa never fully recovered from even multiple years into the apocalypse. She’s still haunted by nightmares and hallucinations in the dark by a twisted visage of her dead sister. Not that Vanessa recovered from a loss she suffered before the apocalypse even started either. They are two losses she never recovered from.
However, Vanessa did try to survive with the friends she had made before this ever started but slowly one by one she watched them either die or disappear. Setting into her disassociated mind that she can’t get emotionally attached to anyone very early on. Starting a strong detach from the empathy she once had that was so loosely held together that Vanessa doesn’t know when she “lost” the ability to empathize altogether.
The apocalypse teaches you to be cold and selfish. Think only for yourself and you’ll survive just fine. Something Vanessa took to heart, so when survivor groups or ‘settlements’ began to form pushing for selfishness in a society that’s fallen apart she turned her nose up at the mere idea of joining them. After all why risk being hurt by the pain of loss again when being a loner protects her from grief that can blind her judgement? It’s a risk she’d rather not take.
Wielding an assortment of weapons, Vanessa prefers melee weapons as they don’t make the noise firearms do. Although she does carry around a handgun just in case. Her main weapon of choice depends on the situation at hand but it tends to be a crowbar or pipe. Although Vanessa also uses a knife or machete if stealth grants her the opportunity of getting in close. She is only ever really seen using her axe to easily behead corpses, something that’s become second nature at this point.
Although something that followed her into her life as a survivor that’s not exactly a great habit is her insomnia and smoking. If anything they’ve gotten worse.
Since living near any densely populated area is a danger, Vanessa tends to lurk on the outskirts. Originally being more nomadic in nature until she found an empty warehouse near an old factory. The area was pretty low in the terms of undead populous and no living people seemed to be around. So she started fortifying it. Vanessa herself doesn’t really know why she decided a warehouse of all places was where she wanted to ‘base’ but it was something. If anything she spends more time in the factory itself than the warehouse, having fortified the complex and not just one building on it.
Using the skills she had on hand and learned, Vanessa did manage to keep power in a small sector of the complex, only using it for minimal lighting but mainly for heat.
Being accustomed to the dark, being in well lit areas does make Vanessa noticeably paranoid. She knows that despite having poor eyesight, the undead are attracted to light(and movement) and fears well lit areas will become a beacon for the undead. She also avoids making as much noise as possible. Hence why she doesn’t like the use of firearms even if they are effective at killing, it’s to much noise and draws too much attention. Although storms are a nice break, the loud noise all around tends to make it harder for the undead to hear you specifically.
Somehow Vanessa did find and become white attached to two animals. A cat she’s named Phantom and a dog she’s named Rookie. Neither help her survive at all but regardless she does care about them a lot. And rationalizes it by saying it’s not a person, and she promised herself she wouldn’t get attached to another person. Even if that doesn’t fully make sense when she’s afraid of loss itself. Or her mantra of being selfish for survival since she goes out of her way to make sure Phantom and Rookie can eat.
However, while she may not be as hardened as she thinks she is. Vanessa is still selfish and not to be trusted. As most survivors are really. Since she tends to not let herself bond with other people, Vanessa is usually not above sacrificing someone else’s life for her own. And has left people for dead to save herself in the past(granted it’s usually people she has beef with but still). One of the things she is known to do is cutting the hamstrings or anything that makes it harder for someone to move quickly really; especially if she’s fleeing a horde. It may be cruel but it’s kept her alive.
Naturally suspicious of people, Vanessa finds people who are naive or ignorant especially untrustworthy as it’s hard to be either of those things in an apocalypse(in her opinion) and generally believes naïveté and ignorance to be an act of manipulation to have her drop her guard. Although it does work, and when Vanessa either leaves them or in her eyes, has to do something to sacrifice them to ensure she makes it out of a situation alive; feels guilty for it. A part of her genuinely does want to help them become less naive or less ignorant but she’s become so untrusting that it’s hard to take those traits at face value. But it gets under her skin because Vanessa knew people who were genuinely naive, when ignorant about the situation at hand that she has watched die while “under her protection”. Again, the reason why she doesn’t do friends anymore. She gets protective and it always leads to loss, grief and blaming herself for the death. Energy she doesn’t have the ability to sacrifice now that every little action could mean life or death.

IN THE PRESENCE OF MY ENEMIES by Gracia Burnham, Dean Merrill
"Can faith, hope, and love survive A YEAR OF TERROR?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Authors of the book: Gracia Burnham (left) and Dean Merrill (right)
I. Review of the Book
In the Presence of My Enemies is a 2003 Christian memoir about the gripping true story of American missionaries Martin and Gracia Burnham’s one whole year as hostages in the Philippine jungle, held captive by a terrorist group known as Abu Sayyaf in the Philippine jungle, and how Gracia has come to terms with her husband’s death at their hands during a rescue effort. The book was written by Gracia Burnham (wife of Martin) with the help of Dean Merrill and was originally published by Tyndale House Publishers in Wheaton, Illinois on January 2003 containing 22 Chapters & 307 pages. The book has been highly praised by critics and general readers for its sharp insights and emotional resonance. It won the 2004 ECPA Christian Book Award for Biographies/Autobiographies and was a New York Times best seller which sold nearly 350,000 copies.
II. Analysis
The book can be a critique of a few critical approaches. The themes of spreading unconditional love and putting faith in God and the story being narrated by Gracia herself through first-person view can be applied in formalist criticism. In socialogical criticism, the issues of war against terrorism, rebellion, kidnapping for ransom, and the cultural debate between religion (Catholic and Islam), just to name a few, are being reflected in the book. In reader-response, at first I was not amazed by how the storytelling was structured in a nonchronological way, but the as I read through the pages of the memoir, my opinion about that suddenly change. The sense of cohesive storytelling is unnecessary because you had fragments of moments where a situation or two is somehow related to what the author is trying to say like at that time when she had an emotional deterioration, there are fragments of which she's often upset at her situation because of one thing, and then tells to herself that she would rather give up faith in God, whom she had devoted throughout her entire life, but then her husband Martin tries to make her emotionally stable some nights after that.
III. Summary
It all begins with a visceral account of the night when Burnham and her husband are startled awake by guards banging on their hotel room door. They know something is wrong because the knocking doesn’t sound friendly. Men burst into the room and make them leave. Burnham puts the kidnap response training she’s had to use and tries to cooperate until tensions die down. She knows this is the best way to survive, at least at the outset.
Burnham describes how many of the hostages don’t appear to be taking it too seriously at first, because they bring suitcases and supplies. She’s annoyed at herself for leaving in such a hurry—there’s an expectation that this will be temporary, and the military will rescue everyone very soon. Although the assailants have guns and weapons, it’s still surprisingly calm. However, once the group reveals themselves as members of the terrorist group, Abu Sayyaf, they know they’re in danger and the mood changes.
Everyone is categorized into either financial or political hostages. Because they’re missionaries and they don’t have a lot of money, Burnham and Martin become political hostages. They know this means they won’t be leaving for some time because the political hostages are dealt with last. Burnham’s faith in God and God’s plan keeps her strong during this time.
Burnham then goes on to describe what it’s like trying to live in the cramped conditions of a hostage situation. She talks about how the hostages, although they speak different languages, try to find common ground and at least learn whom they’re held captive beside. Everyone tries to contact friends, family, and business associates to secure ransom payments, and some hostages have their release terms agreed. For others like Burnham, there is no quick or straightforward release.
Instead, Martin makes a plea to the government to cooperate with the terrorists and meet their demands to secure his freedom. After this plea, they can only watch and wait to see what happens. In the meantime, they adapt to cramped sleeping conditions, almost non-existent facilities, little food and water, and the constant fear hanging over them all. Burnham and her husband pray to God daily for protection and to help them make the right choices to survive this.
Burnham also describes her relationship with Martin and shares memories of better times. She talks about how their relationship started and the challenges they faced in their marriage. She also describes how Martin was selected to return to the U.S. to receive a promotion, but he declined because he was fulfilled by his work in the Philippines. Burnham supported his decision and never regretted it because it was part of God’s Plan.
As Burnham expects, it takes more than a year to secure her release after the military successfully intervenes. However, Martin is killed in an earlier botched rescue; Burnham is among the final hostages to be set free. She describes how journalists covering the story are also held captive for periods of time. The only way she copes with all of this is through her faith in God, and the public support of countless Christians around the world.
Burnham returns home to the U.S., putting the spiritual lessons she learned as a prisoner to good use. She teaches in schools and churches, and she speaks at conferences. Although devastated after losing Martin, she puts her energy into thanking God for her life and raising her family.
IV. Review
I got my keen interest taken by this book that my parents had a long time ago, when I'm looking for some kind of a book that I could make a book review out of it, because of two simple reasons: (01) it is based on a true story and (02) the incident occurred in Dos Palmas, Palawan just a few kilometers to where we live in the year 2001. And for that I was hooked into reading, and eventually, finishing the whole memoir of Gracia Burnham's story of starvation, constant exhaustion, frequent gun battles, coldhearted murder—and intense soul searching about a God who sometimes seemed to have forgotten them.
Martin and Gracia (pronounced “gray-sha”) Burnham became known worldwide. This book tells the story of their kidnapping and being held hostage for one year and eleven days. It also tells of their courtship, marriage, and ministry prior to being captured. The Burnhams were missionaries in the Philippines with New Tribes Mission. That organization was founded by Doc Latham and is solidly in the Free Grace camp.
The author provides interesting insight into this small but radical and powerful terrorist group. We see the interaction of the various members of the group and the methods they employ to draft soldiers to their cause and to take more hostages. We see the Islamic faith through the eyes of some of its most radical followers as they seek to live and, if possible, die for Allah. Contrasted to this is the simple faith of two Christians, who share love when all around them are filled with hate. We continually see Christ’s love shining out in the midst of pain, loneliness and terror. Gracia is honest in portraying a faith that sometimes wavered, yet stood the test because it was built on a sure foundation.
This is not a theological book. Rather, it is as the cover suggests, “A gripping account of the kidnapping of American missionaries and their year of terror in the Philippine jungle.”
I liked how Gracia shows how the Muslims who held them, as well as all Muslims, are striving for eternal life based on their works. She writes, “Muhammad will intercede with Allah, who will judge humanity, consigning those with good deeds to paradise and condemning those who fall short to hell—unless they were fallen mujahideen, those who had died in holy war and were thus already rewarded” (p. 152). She then concludes: “With this way of thinking, clearly the odds of reaching paradise were slim to none.” She also makes it clear that she and Martin prayed regularly for their captors and that on at least one occasion they told them that Jesus died for our sins (p. 151). One of their captors responded, “I don’t want anybody paying for my sin. I’ll do my own paying” (p. 151)
One grueling moment that made me stick to what I'm reading is when Martin witnessed that one of the captives named Guillermo Sobero, have been chosen by the Abu Sayyaf to be executed for that the negotiator answering the phone call did not fulfill the leader's demand in seventy-two hours. Martin told Guillermo that “we can’t save ourselves and that without God’s mercy, we all face eternal death” (p. 108).
I found it very difficult to find in the book where Gracia clearly told what one must do to escape eternal death and have eternal life. When recounting her own testimony she said, “When I was seven or eight, I had a wonderful Sunday school teacher who explained to me the importance of committing my life to Christ. Not long after that, I remember begging for the opportunity to be baptized” (p. 22). I was surprised that she used confusing language like that to describe her own new birth. (See also pp. 142-43).
The clearest statements she makes are found when one Sunday she wrote down a list of promises she could remember from God’s Word. Ninth in this long list was, “He that believeth in Me, tho dead, shall live” (p. 185). Seventeenth on the list was, “He that believeth in Me shall not perish but have everlasting life” (p. 186). Unfortunately, many will miss the point since these Scriptures are never mentioned when they were witnessing, are never explained, and are merely two of eighteen promises given in a long list that people are likely to rush through.
This book is quite challenging. Martin and Gracia held up for over a year under terrible conditions. Even after the death of her husband, due at least in part to many botched raids by the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines), Gracia did not turn her back on God.
In the end we have to conclude with the author that God is gracious, and above all, sovereign. Nothing that happened surprised Him, and the Burnhams were never outside of His sight. Whenever they felt lowest, He provided something to buoy their spirits. When they were in good spirits, He used the opportunity to teach them about Himself.
The book is very well-written and moves along briskly. At times I wished Gracia had gone into more detail about her spiritual state as well as her husband’s while they were faced with trials, but she does mention that her memory of many events is hazy, so I presume that is the reason she does not delve deeper into that area.
A powerful book and one that is sure to provide encouragement, and I am happy to recommend In The Presence of My Enemies.

one thing is for sure, and that is idaho falls will need more people like liam, with the patience to (hopefully) make the best decisions for the QZ as a whole. despite his stained hands, we look forward to seeing how liam’s heart will influence his decisions. liam has put himself in a dangerous position helping gabriel, and even more so to have showed up in idaho with the grizzlies so close, will he face up to that danger, or will idaho falls become another place he left behind for his own safety?
welcome to idaho falls, liam calhoun! please make sure to complete the accepted checklist so we can invite you to our servers. we can’t wait to start writing with you!

name: fran age: 29 pronouns: she/her timezone: est previous roleplay blog: redacted Triggers: redacted wanted connection?: Applying to Erin’s wanted connection for Gabriel Reyes
IC.
2,000 word limit for this section.
Name: Liam Calhoun gender & pronouns: cis man, he/him faceclaim: Ryan Gosling age & birthdate: 41, 9th January 2003 occupation: Soldier Immunity: not immune
Skills.
Marksmanship: His father was a marksman in the Military. When the infection started spreading in states, his father took it upon himself to train young Liam. While Liam grew up on a farm, and had already some skill with shooting, mostly at coyotes, his father taught him the ways of the sniper. His farthest confirmed kill was about 3,150 meters. The sniper he uses now, once belonged to his father.
Livestock Knowledge: Before the end of days, the Frey family used to have a dairy farm. During his time in QZ where there were animals that needed tending, it was his family that stepped up to take care of them. While his family’s farm dealt mostly with cows and chickens, pigs and other animals are not foreign to him.
Drawing: A pastime hobby that lead to be more useful than anyone ever expected. Being a sniper usually had him up high somewhere and with a good view, which meant him sketching out a map of the land. With each mutation of infection, he sketched those too to help people see the differences between them and help know what they were up against should they run into them.
Positive traits.
Resourceful: Having no real allies in the world, whether that be by his own volition or not, Liam was left to fend for himself most, if not all of the time. He has relied on his own skills to get him out of hairy situations, rarely did he rely on those around him. From outsmarting a group of infected by creating makeshift traps and bombs from supplies he was about to scrounge up, to doing the same with the living.
Pragmatic: He would never consider himself a pessimist, nor would he consider himself a optimist. Tending to deal with things in a realistic way rather than deal on what could or should be. He is more of a result and consequences, type of person. I pull this trigger, this person will die.
Patient: If it was one thing, Liam was never in a rush for things. He was a sniper, which meant having to wait long hours, sometimes days, for his target(s) to show up. He’d rather take his time and do things properly than rush through and have the situation/task come out horrible.
Negative traits.
Distant: Liam has always been a quiet person, even before there were infected. As a kid, it was mostly due to being shy and being unsure on how to deal with people. Now, he kept people at a distance because it was safer that way. He has seen the lengths that people would go to, to survive, himself included. He has watched supposed friends leave one another as live bait to get away. Has watched supposed comrades betray one another, kill one another, just for a few scraps of food.
Sarcastic: For those who have had the pleasure of meeting Liam, they would describe him to have a dry sense of humor. Whether the man is staring down a barrel of a gun, or dealing with an overconfident person, let it be known his last words were either words spoken in a deadpan tone, or a deadpan expression.
Enigmatic: There are a lot of things Liam does that are hard to interpret. For someone who has done terrible things to survive, had spent years working under Yennefer in the wyoming militia, help someone escape after being the reason for their capture? Why would someone with a supposed heart made of ice, befriend a small child. Many people view Liam as one thing, then he is shown to be another with no reasoning behind it. He gives them no explanation for the things he does, and he never intends to.
Biography.
Tw. murder (if you think about it.), mention of fertility treatment, Liam being terrible
2002-2003. After years of treatment, and trying, the Calhoun family is surprised, and also excited, to find themselves expecting. On the 9th of January in Raleigh, NC, Liam Calhoun is brought into the world. Both parents are both overjoyed, if not a bit tired.
2003-2012. (age 0 - 9) Liam starts his journey. He grows up on the family dairy farm, where he helps take care of the livestock. When school begins, his mother decides to homeschool him. He spends most of his days helping his father around the farm in the morning and learning math and subjects at night.
2013-2018. (age 10 - 15) He is 10 when the cordyceps outbreak reaches America. Due to his father’s military background, his father is drafted and his family moves to one of the many quarantine zones. It was during this time his father would teach him how to survive, and how to properly use a gun, no more shooting at coyotes. Found out he had a talent for the sniper, much to his fathers delight.
2019-2020.(age 16 - 17) The QZ his family resided in is overrun with infected. His mother is bitten during this time. Liam ends up shooting his mother after noticing his father’s hesitation.
2021-2024. (age 18 - 21) Liam’s father goes missing. Nobody seems to know, or care, where his father wandered off too. Liam becomes suspicious of the FEDRA, and begins to think they had something to do with it. At twenty, His suspicions are confirmed when one of the FEDRA let slip that his father was put down for going against the idea of hoarding rations. As a sort of revenge, Liam leaves a gate open to the infected, and leaves the QZ with his father’s sniper.
2025-2028. (age 22 - 25) Since leaving the QZ in North Carolina, Liam begins to move west. He has a few close calls with the infected, but ultimately is able to either avoid them, or neutralize them. A few times he stumbles upon a group of survivors and gives them a chance. They end up being more of a liability and a hindrance to his survival. After some time, Liam decides to make his leave of the group, stealing their supplies in the process.
2030. (age 27) Liam makes it to Wyoming, and has a run in with the militia. He gives them a run for their money using mostly his marksman skill, among others, before ultimately being cornered. He is surprised that instead of being killed or taken as prisoner, is offered a spot in their ranks. Liam joins the Wyoming Militia.
2033-2039. (age 30 - 36) During his time with the Grizzlies, Liam began to disapprove of Yennefer. While he, himself, has done many terrible things to survive, Yennefer’s actions leave a bad taste in his mouth. Yet, despite this, Liam makes no attempt to leave. One day, while on guard with a few other Grizzlies, Liam spots a group heading their way followed by a pack of infected. He stays up in his crowsnest and takes a shot at one of the living, while the others of his company run down to engage with the group. When everything settles between the two groups plus the infected, Liam convinces his group to take the remaining survivors as prisoners after seeing that they could be useful.
2040. (age 37) Being assigned to guard the prisoners, Liam becomes close to Gabriel Reyes. With his disapproval of Yennefer continuing to grow with each passing day, it doesn’t take long for Gabe to convince Liam into helping him and his friends escape. It takes a month of planning for the escape to happen. No one suspects Liam, or so he thinks.
2042. (age 39) Liam plans his own escape and heads to Idaho Falls with nothing but a fool’s hope and a maybe promise. He is captured by one of their patrols. It is only with luck that he is able to convince them that he means no harm, and to take him in.
2044. (age 41)  It’s roughly been two years since Liam came to Idaho Falls. He is aware of people’s distrust of him. He doesn’t blame them for it, because the feeling is mutual. He keeps to himself, unless necessary, or on patrol. In truth, he debates his time here, and wonders if he made the right decision.
Potential arcs.
Can’t Run. He’s not the only one from the Wyoming militia here in Idaho Falls. Has Liam wrong them in the past? Or perhaps they wish to blackmail him? Regardless, while he wishes to keep his past deeds to himself, the other Grizzlies seem all too eager to make his life miserable. Rumours are spread, some true, some false.
Make Me Soft. It’s been so long since he had a friend, let alone felt feelings for someone, if ever. The process is slow, and almost annoying. He can’t stand them, let him be alone. It’s better, safer, that way. Yet, why does he crave their company? Their touch? Why, should anything happen to them, would he burn the world to the ground?

Since you're open for requests, how about a MC who cannot die no matter how much you try? The anime my sister was watching yesterday (I think it's Rezero or Re:zero, I'm not sure which one) had a character like this, apparently she comes back out of nowhere each time you kill her, no matter how. It's kinda creepy, but I think a MC like this would be very interesting!
MC Just Can't Be Killed! (Feat. The Demon Bros)
(Took some liberties on this one and tweaked it so MC just conveniently manages to escape with their life-)
Lucifer
He knew something was up the moment you first avoided being killed by Levi-
He thought it was dumb luck and pure chance that you could always talk your way out of things, or how you were always rescued by someone. But then he started getting suspicious.
How can you, a human, possibly survive so long? Not that he’d allow you do die while under his care, but even HE was impressed when you managed to bounce back from being clapped into the shadow realm by Belphie.
And then you just... kept narrowly escaping death. You crawled out of the jaws of Cerberus, completely unscathed. You tripped on a path (with Mammon) and went tumbling down a hill... and off a cliff. Yet when he went to get you, you were fine. You ate Solomon's cooking and lived to tell the tale.
What are you.... he demands answers...
Mammon
Probably?? Doesn't notice for a REALLY long time how many brushes with death you've had. Literally thinks your survival is all thanks to his great supervision skills.
When in reality, he's sometimes the cause of a few of your mishaps. Like the other day, when he playfully tripped you on your way out, and thought he fucking murdered you.
And the time he let you help him advertise a shady 'youth potion', and a couple of demons thought you were part of a promotional sampling platter.
How you were still in one piece after all of this was beyond him but hey, he's not asking questions! As long as you're alive, Mammon is a-ok!
Though, he seriously wants to know how you survived that thing with Cerberus. Can you give a guy some tips on how to avoid teeth-induced puncture wounds?
Levi
What kind of infinity lives glitch are you exploiting and how did you implement it in real life-
Levi knows a hacker when he sees one and he's NOT letting you off the hook. The moment he realizes that you haven't died despite being manhandled in every sense of the word, he's watching you.
But also hella thankful?? He wouldn't know what to do if you ACTUALLY died.
It's probably because you're so amazing that you keep managing to do impossible stuff, huh? As expected of his best friend!
Still lowkey worried though, and tries convincing you that you're less likely to die if you just stay in his room with him all the time.
Satan
Inch resting....
Satan would definitely notice right away that you seem practically unkillable, considering how you walked away from every single brother completely unscathed.
You were a human, attending a school for demons, sometimes completely unsupervised, and you were STILL alive?? Yeah, some thorns me not adding up.
He would purposely lead you into dangerous situations, just to watch in awe as you get out of it without so much as a paper cut. Until he starts catching feelings, of course.
As interesting as it is to test out your lucky abilities, the anxiety that swells in Satan's chest when he sees you doing something dangerous is enough to make him want to protect you. Isn't it safer to just sit down and enjoy a good book?
Asmo
Asmo literally tried putting you in Lucifer's way in the beginning so you'd get hurt, so he definitely notices how not hurt you are after a while.
But now that he loves you, all's well that ends well! He's sooo glad Lucifer didn't tear you apart like he thought he was going to! Mwah mwah, no hard feelings ❤️
Seriously though, how the hell are you managing that?? You keep being tricked into eating things they're poisonous to humans, and the most that happens to you is bad indigestion. And that time Asmo forgot the hot springs were too hot for you? Yeah, somehow you didn't die that time, either.
What were you made out of??? Were you secretly magical like Solomon and didn't tell anyone?? Or maybe you were super lucky???
Does that mean you're especially sturdy? If so, then maybe he could introduce you to a few "activities" that are bound to keep you out of trouble~
Beel
What have you been eating that's making you so sturdy?? Actually, what HAVEN'T you eaten at this point..? The fact that you didn't die after eating Solomon's cooking is enough to tell Beel that you might not need his protection.
Though, that doesn't stop him from following you around. Even if you miraculously bounce back every time, he's getting kind of worried for like.. your overall health?
At this point he's tempted to just zip you up in his jacket to keep you safe. You're like a danger magnet and it's giving him anxiety.
He doesn't mind your adventurous side, but can't you slow down a little? At least make sure he's with you when you decide to do something risky.
If he feeds you enough, you'll get tired and just want to rest. That'll keep you out of trouble. So get ready, because Beel's bringing over a ton of desserts from Madame Scream's.
Belphie
Yeah uhhhhh he was fucking SHOOK when you came back from the dead after he clearly sent you to heaven with his bare hands??
So yeah. He's convinced you're unkillable for now. But as curious as he is to test those limits, he's realized that you're off limits as far as killing goes. And he might.. like you a little too much to try anything.
Just kidding. He makes it known that he likes you, and once you're comfortable with it, he'll make jokes about how you're immortal. Maybe you're a demon in disguise? Or an angel even?
Doesn't make it known, but he quietly watches over you to make sure you don't kill yourself through one of the millions of ways to die that the Devildom offers for free. Might not be the best bodyguard since he falls asleep all the time, but he's doing his best.
You know what would really keep you out of trouble? Napping with him. So every time you even think about something risky, he's dragging you off to the attic for some quality z's.

Some people have Commanders that switch off, groups or Commanders who retire and leave room for new, fresher faces once they're tired from the world that needs saving. Some people have the same Commander from start to present and onwards. Either way truly works great, there's creative and unique narratives to be found in both.
But for the steady plot Commanders who stick with it to the end...how much must they grapple with how stubbornly life clings to them?
It's easy to focus on the dangers the Commander faces, all the close calls, the near-deaths and the losses that went too far. But what about the fact that they've come back from each and every one of those? Especially when so many others around them have much more finite lifespans.
Sure, things move smoothly at first, you kill Zhaitan and Scarlet and Mordremoth, no sign of death to yourself though the bodies around you pile up. The miasma of death surrounds you from the very first moment you commit to this duty after all, with the target of a dragon who thrives off it. You're no stranger to widows and lost friends. And you likely expect that one day it's your own loved ones who will receive the most unwanted letter of how your final moments were spent.
But then, you survive. The bodies keep piling up, at others hands, at your enemies' hands, at your own...but not a scratch on the famous Commander. For a while at least.
You do die eventually though, don't you? Your time runs out deep in the desert alone and burning hotter than the air around you. That luck that somehow followed you for years runs out at the hands of a god and you think this is it. You'll wake up in the mists, if anywhere at all, and someone else will take up the mantle.
Until you wake up and find yourself somewhere else entirely. No name or memories until you work to recollect everything, all the way up to the very event that put you there. But you decide that it isn't your time. There's another way, as the judge so kindly tells you, and you seek out that option. Sure it has the chance of erasing you entirely, but then it can also revive you. And until now you'd been so lucky, hadn't you?
A second chance at life and your luck seems to return. Things run smooth again, death surrounds you but never touches you.
Until another close call, when Joko has you all but beat. But Aurene comes in doesn't she? No one but Braham knows how close that call was. But you survive again, death doesn't touch you.
A blast from Kralkatorrik, you were nearly right on top of where Aurene died but got lucky with her reaction time. Just some minor injuries, not even enough to keep you from walking around.
An arrow imbued with the magic to seriously hurt an elder dragon, shot right into your chest. Things go black that time, it almost seems like it's happened, but again...you wake up. You're okay. A healing pool so powerful that it's as if you were never shot in the first place.
You see people die, you're surrounded by death, again and again. You're in situations repeatedly that necessitate a level of danger that could kill you at any moment. And it's one thing to just be lucky, to have close calls but misses. It's another to have seen your death and faced it down multiple times, in ways that should've never reasonably had an escape route.
What does that do to you? Not the deaths, but the defiance of them. The fact that Life clings to you almost as thoroughly as death to the risen, keeps you going, keeps you surviving on your path. If you were anyone else, if you'd taken any other dangerous job, would life be this stubborn? Would you have survived as a simple footsoldier better than any of the others you'd seen die?
Would it drive you to guilt and trying to drown out the memories, layer upon layer of survivors guilt as the faces of those you've lost blur together, too many to even count any more? Would it push you to believe yourself unkillable, a god among mortals every bit as powerful and defying of mortality as the dragon you've bonded to? Would it simply wear you out, make you long for that choice you'd had in the Domain of the lost so many close calls ago, the promise of a straightforward end and the letter finally sent?
What does it do to a person, to be so thoroughly unkillable yet fragile?

Norman x twin gn reader hc’s
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Headcannons of being Normans twin :)
Warning(s): tpn manga spoilers
Request: can i request some headcanons of being norman's twin (norman x f!reader or gn!reader) the reader's personality is completely the opposite of norman like shes still smart like norman but athletic like ray and shes barely serious (she makes jokes even when shes in danger-). If you want a guide, you can search in wattpad, ''reborn into the promised neverland ray x reader''
A/n: Haven’t read tpn in ages so don’t expect accurate stuff from my shit memory
I also wasn’t bothered to read the whole book 🗿sooo y/n’s personality is probably not what you imagined,,, sorry 😶
Kinda hating this :(
Tumblr media
Y/n and Norman used to try and trick people that they were the other twin… which works for about 5 seconds before y/n ruins it by trying to copy Norman’s walk and falling flat onto their face
When y/n was doing the hide and seek thing with Krone they surprisingly won despite being spotted in the first minute (y/n started swearing because there was a spider in the tree)
Y/n ditched the younger kids the second they got into the forest cuz… fuck them kids “they we’re going to slow me down anyways” …was y/n’s excuse to justify their actions
Krone gave y/n a jump scare which proceeded in them screaming their head off while flipping her off and running for their life. For some reason it worked and it was a great distraction (y/n was definitely the mvp)
Y/n did some big brained moves and pretended to be Norman to give him time to rest and that was the only reason Norman had time to climb the giant boulder and look down on Krone (Norman died after climbing the boulder and just lay like a dying fish for 5 minutes)
This was also the one and only time that y/n and Norman tricked people into thinking that they were each other because fear is the greatest motivator (apart from money)
The only reason Norman and Ray won was because of y/n supreme power
Norman fusses over y/n like a mum, so after the game with Krone, he threw a hissy fit about how they were so reckless and stupid
Although after that, he helped apply ointment to help their muscles since surviving a running krone is exhausting (but hella impressive since Krone cuts down trees with her bare HANDS)
Y/n’s pretty smart like Norman but when they’re in a stressful situation they easily panic and abandon all reason
Somehow y/n gets perfect tests scores
When Norman got shipped out, y/n followed quickly after him to try and save him before they both get eaten cuz they didn’t want to die alone 💀
Y/n started beating the shit out of Isabella after she was about to bring Norman inside a room while Norman just stood there, still in shock and confusion
Then a demon appeared
“Haha… I’m in danger 😃”
Y/n also got shipped to Lambda 7214 because of their incredible strength and stamina, along with their outstanding test scores (y/n is op)
I just realized I’m just starting to write a whole story plot and call it headcannons …whatever, it’s staying to make this look longer
—— When they’re adults in the human world——
Norman’s a doctor and y/n leeches off his money
Y/n’s probably smart enough to become a lawyer or something but honestly, they couldn’t be bothered and it was so much easier to just rely on Norman and his giant bank account (take advantage of your rich friends ;))
Y/n also lives with Norman because free housing is the best thing ever (also because his hair is nice and fluffier than yours)
Norman wants to cuddle after a long day of work and they only reason that you agree is because of his hair (fluffy hair fluffy hair fluffy hair-)
Norman sucks at cooking though and you aren’t even trusted to even go in the kitchen so you either order food or go out (imagine being rich enough to do this everyday and get actual good food instead of junk… *cries in poor*)
Occasionally when the trio meet up, you and Norman still pretend to be each other… which still fails miserably, but at this point, it’s become a tradition

Marinette’s Family Court Circus
I got this idea from a post @unmaskedagain and decided to put my own little spin to it. It’s a bit sad and does have my usual Lila-Salt spin, but I really loved writing this. Warm-Fuzzies and please enjoy!!
The day of her greatest triumph was also her greatest tragedy. Hawkmoth had finally been defeated, the butterfly and peacock miraculous back in the miracle box where they belonged, and Paris was finally safe.
However, when Gabriel Agreste was revealed to be the magical terrorist and his assistant, Nathalie, his accomplice, Adrien had been devastated. When the Paris police sought to find out the extent of Adrien's involvement, he had no choice but to reveal in a private interrogation room with only the mayor, Officer Roger, the chief of police, and Ladybug herself, his identity as Chat Noir. After which, Adrien said a tearful goodbye to Plagg and surrendered the ring of destruction to Ladybug. A press conference was held within an hour, absolving Adrien of any crimes in relation to his father, and his bodyguard would also be absolved four days later.
That night, after Ladybug had returned home and tearfully placed the ring, broch, and pin back in the miracle box; her parents and Grandma Gina had told her that they were going out to dinner to celebrate; Gina had even rented a car so they wouldn’t need to walk or take the subway. How Marinette wished that they had just gotten on the subway.
She woke up the following afternoon in the hospital. Apparently, her family weren’t the only people celebrating Hawkmoth’s defeat, and a car load of university students had celebrated too hard and T-boned their car while running a light. The doctors told her that her grandmother and father had died on impact and her mother passed away during surgery. Marinette had been extremely lucky to survive without any life threatening injuries; a broken leg, arm, collar bone, two cracked ribs, and a few lacerations across her body.
She was hardly paying attention to what the doctors were saying. Too shocked by the whole situation. There was no Miraculous Cure that could fix this. In the span of a single day, she had defeated her enemy, saved Paris, lost her partner, lost her grandmother, and her parents. She was alone.
When her family’s lawyer, M. Contere came to talk about custody, it was revealed that her grandmother was supposed to take custody in the event of her parents' deaths. Her grandfather would have been the next logical choice, but he had recently suffered a stroke and had been placed in a nursing home. This left the lawyer scrambling to find someone to take the girl or risk having her surrendered to the city of Paris.
Going through the Dupain-Chengs’ contact list, M. Contere made phone calls to numbers listed as family friends or emergency contacts. There were three that particularly stood out to him, all listed under the title of ‘uncle’.
The first was to an ‘Uncle J’; a woman answered the phone, introducing herself as Penny. When Contere told her it had to do with the Dupain-Chengs, the phone was handed to a man with a distinctly British accent. He sounded devastated to hear that Tom, Sabine, and Gina had all passed away before going into a panic and asking if Marinette was alright, showing absolute relief that she had survived the crash. When Contere mentioned the custody hearing, the man practically demanded to know the date, time, and place before promising that he would be there.
The second contact that stood out was labeled as ‘Uncle Tony’. That call was answered by an assistant named Jarvis before transferring the call to Tony. Again, Contere could hear the surprise and hurt at hearing that his friends had passed away before asking if Marinette had been in the car. When told that she had survived, there was relief and he mentioned that Peter would have probably cried for a week if he’d lost his childhood friend. Tony then offered to take custody of Marinette and Contere quickly told him the details.
Although M. Contere was relieved that at least two family friends/possible relatives seemed more than willing to take Marinette, he knew how fickle and difficult the courts could be and wanted as many options as possible for the girl, which led to the third contact labeled ‘Uncle Bruce’.
The phone was answered by an older sounding gentleman named Alfred before transferring the call. Contere could hear multiple voices in the background, most sounding like young men, and when he told Bruce about the passing of Tom, Sabine, and Gina; it went very quiet for a moment before all the voices began speaking at once demanding to know what happened, who was responsible, and if Marinette was okay. M.Contere answered the questions that he could and told them that Marinette was in need of a legal guardian. Bruce said Gina had been a great friend and mentor to him when he was younger and that he would be honored to care for her granddaughter. So he told him the details of the court hearing with the promise that he would make sure that Marinette was taken care of until then.
After hanging up, M. Contere had a strange feeling that he couldn’t shake. A feeling that told him that those three ‘Uncles’ were either going to make his job of getting Marinette into a stable home a lot easier… or it would be a total nightmare.
~oOo~
The day of the hearing was a Monday and Marinette's case was the first on the docket, which was a relief. If things went smoothly, she could be placed with one of her respective uncles by the end of the week and be taken care of. When the two of them stepped into the room, with Marinette rolling beside him in her wheelchair, M. Contere was surprised to see multiple familiar faces in the courtroom that he had not expected. Jagged Stone, Bruce Wayne, and Tony Stark were glaring, arguing, and puffing out their chests at each other; ignoring everyone else in the room. He also noticed how each man seemed to have an entire team of lawyers backing them up.
The tension and glaring match only broke when the two women; Pepper Potts and Penny Rolling, and the four Wayne boys; Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damien, noticed Marinette’s arrival.
“Marinette, sweetie, how are you feeling?” Penny asked as she walked away from Jagged to kneel beside Marinette’s wheelchair.
“Been better, but I’m glad to see some familiar faces,” she said with a weak smile.
Pepper leaned over a bit to give the girl a gentle hug while minding her injuries. “We’re here for you, Mari. No matter what.”
Then the four boys were almost surrounding her, offering to hunt down the people that took away their family and pile so many lawsuits on them that they’ll die of papercuts. This made her chuckle and grimace a bit from the pain, telling the boys that was sweet but unnecessary.
Jagged, Bruce, and Tony immediately put their argument on hold as they hurried over to check on the girl as well. Contere found it to be a good sign that Marinette seemed familiar with the three men, that they all asked how she was and if she wanted anything, as well as promising that they would take care of her. That last one, the three said at the same time and got them glaring at each other again. This caused Contere to sweat and Marinette to give her head a resigned shake.
What followed would probably go down as the most intense, well argued, and most headache-inducing case in the history of the Paris Family Court System with all three men vying for custody of the teenage girl.
Being able to provide financial stability wasn’t a concern as Jagged Stone was currently the most successful rockstar in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas; while Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne were two of the wealthiest businessmen in the entire world. All three even offered to completely cover Marinette’s tuition to any school she wanted, so long as she was accepted.
Her safety turned out to be a large factor with all three men, and they were willing to hire their own private security to make sure that she stayed safe at all times. However, the three men also argued how the others lived in unsafe environments.
Jagged mostly lived in tour buses and out of hotels, which was a factor; but he was willing to call off his tours during the school year and only go on tour during school breaks so Marinette would never be without her guardian. Penny was also willing to help Jagged at every turn, stating that she loved Marinette like a niece and would make sure that she had a strong female role model in her life as well.
Tony’s reputation as a playboy and his identity as Iron Man brought up the possibility of attracting a dangerous element. He argued that his homes were equipped with the most advanced security systems on the planet. As well as being friends with an actual “God-Alien”, who had met Marinette and liked her a great deal. Tony was also willing to make Marinette her own personal Iron Suit that would be programmed to protect and fly her to a safe location at the first sign of danger. Pepper also offered to share custody as she already took care of Tony’s daily life as his assistant, taking care of Marinette would be easy and she was looking forward to having her around.
Bruce’s residence in Gotham, the most crime ridden city in North America, was a big factor. Bruce made a point that he already had experience as a guardian of his three adopted sons and his biological son, and they were kept safe. That he also had a top of the line security system at his home, which was located outside of city limits. Dick, Jason, and Tim also commented that they thought of Marinette like a little sister and that Wayne Enterprises had locations all over the world. If the judge decided that Gotham was too dangerous, one of them would gladly take up residency in a city that the judge approved and would stay there to watch over Marinette while still working and providing for her.
After two hours of listening to the back and forth of the three men and their lawyers, the judge decided that he’d heard enough for the day and set the next meeting for the following Thursday after lunch. He also recommended that the men bring proof that they have the mental capability of caring for a teenage girl, lists of schools near their homes to show that she will continue her education, and character witnesses, if available.
The three men wanted to take Marinette out to get something to eat after the court was adjourned, but M. Contere was forced to tell them that it would not be appropriate during the legal proceedings. He also recommended that they follow the judge’s instructions and make sure that they had everything needed, otherwise they would likely not qualify. Hearing that got all three men, their assistants, family, and lawyers moving at top speeds to get everything they needed for court in a few days.
Once they were out of sight, the lawyer couldn’t help but let out a stress induced sigh as he raised one hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. This custody battle had the potential to turn into a total circus, and although it could do great things for his career in the long run, he was more worried about how this would affect Marinette.
Speaking of, he was brought from his thoughts when he felt her small hand gently pat the hand that was holding his briefcase. When he looked down at her, she gave him a kind, though slightly amused smile. “You had no idea about the can of worms you were opening when you made those phone calls, did you?”
He couldn’t help but chuckle. “How was I supposed to know that Uncle J, Uncle Tony, and Uncle Bruce would turn out to be three of the most influential men in the world? How does your family even know all of them?”
“Uncle Bruce was raised by the family butler, Alfred Pennyworth, after his parents died. Grandma Gina and Alfred were best friends when they were younger. After the Waynes died, Gina would go check on them in Gotham, she liked to brag that she helped get Bruce back out of his shell. Uncle Tony knew my parents back in university, he was a lot younger and smarter than the other students and you can guess that didn’t go over well with some of them. My parents looked out for him and they became friends, and even after he got busy when he took over the company, he always made time to be there for the big moments in our lives; my parents’ wedding, their baby shower, and when I was born. I’ve actually spent a few summers in Gotham and New York visiting them.”
“And Jagged Stone?”
“He’s the most recent of my honorary uncles. I’m his personal designer, but he got unofficially adopted into my family after the tv show that took place in my parents’ bakery. Uncle Jagged made a bread guitar and sang rock songs with my dad. Once the show was over, Mom invited him and Penny to stay for dinner. During the course of the night, Dad claimed him as a new little brother. Jagged was so happy that he started calling my parents big brother and big sister, and started calling me his niece. Since then, he’s come over at least once a month to just relax and be a family with us.”
M. Contere couldn’t help but smile at that. From the sound of it and what he had seen, all three men truly cared about this girl and were willing to bend over backwards for her. That was a good thing, but he still worried that a custody battle between these three men could go for a long time and possibly cause mental distress for Marinette. Although the final decision was ultimately up to the judge, he was allowed to make recommendations if they were in the best interests of the child.
With that in mind, he knelt down beside Marinette. “You know the three of them and what they’re living situations are like better than I do. And even though you’re not 15 years old yet, I could petition the judge to factor your opinion. Which of them would you like to have guardian status?”
When Marinette gave him a knowing smile, he just knew that things might get more complicated.
~oOo~
It got a lot more complicated.
The media had caught wind of the custody battle, causing a giant crowd of paparazzi to stake out the courthouse to catch a glimpse of the rockstar, billionaire, and the self proclaimed “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” who was also a superhero. To their credit, the three only said that they were devastated by the loss of the Dupain-Chengs and wanted to do what was best for Marinette and left all the other questions at the door.
In the courtroom; all three men, as well as their assistants and Bruce’s boys, had done mental evaluations that their lawyers submitted to the judge. They also provided lists of different schools that Marinette was free to choose from; including public schools, private, and even schools that specialized in fashion. But the absolute kicker was the character witnesses.
Jagged Stone had brought other music stars, movie stars, and production mega stars that made Contere wonder for a moment if he’d accidentally walked into an award ceremony. Tony Stark had brought the Avengers, The Avengers, as his character witnesses. Contere wasn’t too proud to admit that he was a bit starstruck when Thor himself came over to great Marinette and complimented her on her ‘battle scars’, saying that they were a testament to her strength. If that wasn’t enough, Bruce brought multiple members of the Billionaire’s Club as character witnesses, many of whom had been suspected of being members of the Justice League.
The judge looked just as surprised, though somewhat irritated, by the people crowding his courtroom. He quietly looked over the mental health evaluations that had been provided, as well as the lists of schools; finding that everything was in order and that any of them would have been wonderful guardians to the girl. He was tempted to call another recess and pick this back up the following week until Marinette’s lawyer raised his hand.
“If it would please the court,” the judge motioned for him to continue, “although Mlle. Dupain-Cheng is not yet of legal age to make a final decision on the matter of custody, I felt that she was old enough to state her opinion. We have discussed it over the past few days and I believe we came up with a proposal that will satisfy all parties involved while still being in the best interest of the child.” M. Contere presented the four copies of the proposal to the bailiff, who handed one to the judge, and the three lead lawyers.
The judge read the summary at the top before looking at the lawyer in surprise. “You’re proposing joint custody?”
“Yes, your honor. My client and I feel that due to the influence that these men hold, as you can see by the character witnesses that have come here to speak on their behalf, that this custody hearing could be drawn out for a long time, which could have mental repercussions on Marinette.” Contere didn’t miss the ‘you ain’t kidding’ roll of his eyes, or the looks of shame that the three men shared at the thought of hurting Marinette.
“Keeping that in mind, my client came up with an outline for a possible custody agreement. M. Stark would retain custody during school as he has listed one of the top fashion schools in America, which would further Marinette’s future career. The weekends would be spent with M. Wayne, as Wayne Enterprises has connections to the fashion industry and would be able to give her training to help her successfully run her own business. M. Stone would have custody during summer breaks, so Marinette may continue gaining experience as his personal designer, a position she has held for close to a year and has already earned her recognition in the industry.”
The judge grew quiet again as he contemplated the proposal and read over the details. He didn’t want to deal with these three powerful, and in a lot of ways eccentric, men for the next few months while attempting to figure out the best placement for the child. Nor did he want to deal with the media frenzy that this case had already brought on. If anything, this was likely the best option, if he could get the men to agree to the terms.
“Do you have any objections to this proposal?”
There was a moment of silence as the lawyers continued to look over the proposal and spoke to their clients. Jagged’s lawyer was the first to respond. “No, your honor. M. Stone believes that this would be best for Marinette, but we would like to add a clause that M. Stone be permitted to call and visit Mlle. Dupain-Cheng so long as it does not interfere with her school work.”
“My client would also like that clause added to the proposal, your honor,” said the Wayne lawyer. “As well as the clause that Messieurs Stone and Stark work together with M. Wayne in securing Mlle. Dupain-Cheng’s safety. As previously stated, all three men could be considered high-priority targets and normally require bodyguards. M. Wayne has proposed that any potential bodyguard be vetted and approved by all parties involved before being hired.”
The judge looked to Stark’s lawyer. “And do you have any stipulations you would want to see added to the proposal?”
“Only that there be an open line of communication between Messieurs Stone, Wayne, and Stark at all times in reference to Mlle. Dupain-Cheng’s well being and any possible travel. As all three men are known to travel the world for business; there will be occasions for the child to travel as well. When this occurs, the other guardians should receive notice of the country, city, and address that she resides; so, in case of an emergency, they will be able to be present to assist and protect her.”
“My client has no objections to these clauses,” said Jagged’s lawyer.
“And you, M. Wayne?”
The Wayne lawyer nodded. “The clauses are more than reasonable and are in the best interest of Mlle. Dupain-Cheng. Although I only speak for my client, I do not believe that I would be out of line to say that is the main focus of Messieurs Stone and Stark as well.”
The lawyers hid their relief when the judge nodded in agreement. “As the proposal was presented by the child and the three of you are in agreement, I’m scheduling a meeting in my chambers for next Tuesday to go over the finer details of the custodial agreement. I will allow your clients and one lawyer each to attend; this includes you and your client, M. Contere.”
“Yes, your honor.”
“And as for you, Mlle. Dupain-Cheng,” Marinette’s head snapped up to meet the judge’s gaze. “It seems that you have gained three extremely powerful, influential, and in many ways crazy guardians. I don’t know if I should congratulate you or give you my sympathies. What I will do is wish you the best of luck and hope that you are prepared for the future. Court is adjourned.”
There was a hum of surprise and joy that spread through the courtroom as Jagged, Bruce, and Tony stepped up to each other and shook hands before approaching Marinette and M. Contere.
“Of course, my niece would come up with a way to keep everyone happy, she’s so rock n’ roll that way.” Jagged beamed with pride as Tony and Bruce nodded in agreement.
“Would it be alright if all of us went to dinner to celebrate,” Bruce asked Contere, indicating the ‘all’ to be himself and his boys, Jagged and Penny, and Tony and Pepper; along with Marinette and Contere.
“So long as there’s no discussion of custody and everyone stays civil, I don’t see any harm in it.”
Everyone smiled in agreement while Pepper mentioned that she’d just finished making reservations for all eleven of them at a nice restaurant that had the best view of the Eiffel Tower.
As the others began filing out of the courtroom, Marinette patted his hand and gave him a sympathetic look. “You just opened your second can.”
M. Contere wasn’t sure about what she’d meant until after the meal was over and the waitress brought the check, and then watched as the three billionaires fought over it. Pinching the bridge of his nose, he only hoped that this would all be over on Tuesday and he could go back to his normal, boring cases.

I was going through the manhwa and it hit me that unlike Athy and Jennette's dresses, we never see anyone dissecting the meaning behind Claude or Anastacius's costume, even though they have much underlying symbolism to offer with all their varying colours and motifs. And these are the two most rich characters in terms of backstory and human relationships. Ur detailed dissection on Jennette's costumes are so good that I'm scarily tempted to tempt u to do this one. Will u do this one analysis🥺???
I don't know anything about the medals or the flowers on Claude's clothings since I'm don’t know flower language... But I can give my thoughts on some of his clothings.
Claude wears three types of clothings throughout the manhwa: 1. royal military uniforms 2. togas 3. victorian children clothings of the upper/middle class (play suits + sailor suits).
What is striking is that all three types of clothings he wore can be associated with freedom and oppression equally (1. military 2. ancient romans 3. royal navy).
Let's start with the first outfit he wore as a child: The sailor suit.
Tumblr media
In 1846, the four-year-old Albert Edward, Prince of Wales was given a scaled-down version of an enlisted man’s sailor suit. It was almost certainly a carefully chosen decision calculated to make the public associate the monarchy which had declined in popularity with the most popular institution in Britain -The Royal Navy.
What do we know about the royal navy? Besides it’s role in British colonialism and the suppression of many Asian and African peoples, it helped to defeat a series of opponents for the most part countries goverened by authoritarian or dictatorial rulers (Philip II, Louis XIV, Napoleon, Kaiser Wilhelm II), in other words: tyrants.
Sailor suits which are associated with childishness and innocence stand in juxtaposition to it’s militaristic origin . It’s a reminder how young Claude was still pure and innocent, yet without being fully aware of it he was thrown into a battle for succession at such a young age, and expected to survive or die trying.
We could also dvelve into color theory a little bit: Brown is mostly associated with humility, plainness and poverty. It could be a reminder of his commoner origin. Perhaps it tells us that his mother didn’t have much money back then and Claude had to get dressed in clothes that didn’t gave away easily how often they got mended or got dirty, because his mother could only afford a few sets of clothing. This is only a speculation: perhaps the money meant for Claude was mostly used for the treatment of his mother’s sickness. (I can’t see the Emperor paying the treatment of a chronically ill lover. Unless he actually loved her).
We could also assume that Claude intentionally picked out plain brown clothing that would allow him to blend well with the environment. The flashback in chapter 73 shows us little Claude hiding behind the bushes from the palace guards. Considering his state of increased alertness, he seemed to be used to sense danger approaching and find ways to hide quickly and efficiently.
Tumblr media
Ah before I forget too much brown can also create feelings of sadness, isolation and loneliness...alright, you get what I mean, I stop here.
Now to Anastacius. While Claude’s attire is more lowkey about it’s violent origin: Anastacius’ is more upfront. He’s already aware of the situation he is in. He knows his little brother is more talented than him and feels threatened enough to consider the words of Caracks who tried to lure him away. Anastacius wears something resembling a mix of military uniform and a victorian play suit in blue and red.
Blue was also considered the most prestigious colour, and was granted to “royal” regiments.
I think Anastacius and Claude’s outfits were meant to show that they were at a crossroad in life. When Ana was still friendly with Claude he started out wearing play outfits and then as his relationship with Anastacius deteriorated, gradually started to wear normal suits and uniforms until he was wearing his ceremonial military uniform at the day he killed Ana.
Tumblr media
The Obelia brother’s wearing a military uniform signifies that they are at war with someone. They are ready to spill blood. You can see it in The Lovely Princess, where when Athy meets Claude for the first time, instead of a toga he is wearing a military uniform and continues to do so almost until his death. We know that Diana was the one who introduced him to Siodonna’s fashion. With the memories of her gone, so was the peaceful presence in his life and he became a misanthrope. The memory spell had taken full affect and he was incapable to love or care for Athy in any way. Athy became his biggest torment, his enemy. Similarly our! Claude is only wearing a military uniform at official occations like Athy’s debutante ball, where he had to face the nobles which he resented so much. And even now, in the latest chapters he bothered to change his clothes with magic from a toga into a uniform when he reunited with his elder brother.
Whenever Anastacius and Claude are wearing a military uniform they are meeting someone hated (LP verse Claude met Athy, birthday baquet! Claude met the nobles (Roger), and now in chapter 109 he met his brother who had tried to kill him), they either want to demonstrate strenght (the uniform at Athy’s birthday baquet was more show) or they are ready to attack (the uniform in the recent chapters was more practical to move in).
However they are also stress on the fact that they belong to the royal family and are ought to be respected.
Ana wore almost constantly military uniforms, because he felt the need to show that he was the heir. Not only by birthright, but also in appearance. Only when he went undercover he switched his wardrobe to suits (still, in purple in the color of royality) and puffy shirts. You can see it when Anastacius entered the palace with Jennette. When Ana is fighting against Claude he is either wearing a royal blue (past) or a combination of red and black (present).
“ Black and red. In western culture, these are the two most sinister colors, as red typically conveys the meaning of blood or anger, and black is that of darkness or death. Being a very visually striking combination, they can also convey a sense of power. Together, they additionally give the impression of burning coal or wood, i.e. "fire and destruction".”
(TV Tropes: Red and Black and Evil All Over)
In his previous life he bought fire and destruction upon Obelia...like in Athy’s nightmare remember? So it’s is kind of a bad omen as well.
Tumblr media
Anastacius uniform in black and red forms a strong contrast to Claude’s uniform, which is dyed in colors of purple and pure white. “The color purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic.”
My point is that Ana’s appearance reflect his state of mind. Being all the time at war with his brother. The paranoia to get overthrown.  The fear not to be enought. He insisted on wearing the ceremonial royal uniform, the crown and the coat, in royal colors, because he felt inferior towards Claude and it made him feel safer. If he thought his own skills as heir were lacking he sought to compensate with the way he presented himself in public (his inferiority complex might have contributed to his lavish livestyle and tendency to waste money).
The only exception where Ana is not wearing a uniform is a scene during the time of Ana and Claude’s falling out. But he still emphasizes that he belongs to the Imperial family in another way: The brooch on his vest, has the same blue shade as the color of his eyes, which are a trademark sign that only the Imperial family possesses. In chapter 109, Claude and Athy chose to wear a similary colored brooch to show that they are the “true” heirs.

Why did Kepler call Eiffel his Point man that one time: An essay.
Okay here is the reason I was researching what a point man is.
So there’s this throwaway line from Kepler in ‘Persuasion’ where he says he’s “Not about to waste his point man on such a hazardous mission.” Which is incredibly interesting to me because in a military context a point man would go out first into the most hazardous situation to investigate. And, if necessary, to die so others didn’t. Kepler very much isn’t asking Eiffel to do that....Yet.
See, in the episode, he’s asking Eiffel to stay with him on the Hephaestus while everyone else goes out on the dangerous space walk. So maybe it’s just an Inception reference, or the writers didn’t research some terminology that well, and it’s not that deep? (Probably, but I also feel like over analyzing this a little bit.)
So a point man, right? Characterized by being a scout, taking tons of danger for everyone else, and also, and this part is very important, being ceaselessly loyal....... and also an Inception reference, (Creating a sort of right-hand man connotation into the bargain, if you consider the character of Arthur.) (I could write a whole other essay about the whole point man thing for him but it would get really long if I did it here.) and obviously, Eiffel would appreciate a pop culture reference.
But isn’t that role more suited to Jacobi? I would argue not. Especially after Maxwell’s death, Jacobi quickly loses faith in Kepler, in fact, he seems to blame Kepler for Maxwell’s death more than he blames Minkowski. Kepler was the one to make the orders, even if she was the one to pull the trigger. Although his loyalties to Kepler seem pretty fluid, even after Maxwell’s death he has so much faith in her, I don’t have the exact quote handy, but he says something along the lines of “People like that (Kepler) are there to let people like her (Maxwell) be brilliant.” (And presumably better humanity and all that jazz, really sweet that someone as outwardly cynical as Jacobi has such....Noble thoughts.) Even from as early as the Goddard Christmas party, they seem to back each other up on the most banal of lies. TO KEPLER, no less.
This suggests something really interesting, that Jacobi isn’t Kepler’s point man, he’s Maxwell’s. Even before her death, Jacobi’s loyalty to Kepler is always going to be secondary. And even though Kepler heavily miscalculated how much Jacobi would still be loyal to him after the mutiny, I think he does realize this on some level.
So Kepler needs a new right-hand man, one who already has proven himself to be loyal, and who goes out into danger to scout it out.
Enter.....Doug Eiffel! Who has, A: Proven himself to be extremely loyal on multiple occasions, something Kepler would have witnessed both firsthand when he first picked him up on the Urania, and through Doug’s logs. and B: Had significant experience in dangerous situations. (Again, the whole ‘cryosleep and readjust the tiny spaceship to get in comms range of help’ is something Kepler would have seen firsthand.) and C: Eiffel is viewed favorably by the aliens they’re trying to contact. All of this adds up to a very good point man, if Kepler can win him over.
Which Kepler attempts through......Drum-roll please.....Emotional manipulation!!! Is anyone really surprised? Anyway. He starts by outwardly validating the person hood of both Eiffel and Hera, mainly by yelling at Hilbert a lot, While behind the scenes he has Maxwell put malicious code in Hera and expects Eiffel to eventually die for him if it comes to that.
He also isolates Eiffel as much as possible from other members of his original team.
He assigns Minkowski the most menial jobs he can, and since turning Eiffel against her is frankly a tall order, attempts to turn her against him with the records ‘leak’ of his past.
He gives Hera a new friend who understands her on a level that Eiffel doesn’t.
He keeps Lovelace close, (My personal interpretation of their dynamic is that Kepler views her as an opposing, but largely unattached agent. No loyalty to either him or the Hephaestus crew.) as master-at-arms, but largely doesn’t seem to worry about her.
Since degradation and other forms of manipulation (punishment?) don’t seem to work on Hilbert, Kepler attacks him through the only vector he can, denying him his research. (This serves two purposes, keeping Hilbert in line and submissive, and encouraging Eiffel to like him more. I don’t think Kepler would care that much about Eiffel’s health unless it benefited him somehow, so he uses Eiffel’s bodily autonomy basically as a treat for good behavior. Not unlike how a lot of people treat Hera, actually.)
And Eiffel? He praises him for his resourcefulness, he gives him preferential treatment, doesn’t call him stupid. (This is all heavily conditional on his mood, of course.) He makes himself the one person on the station who will give Eiffel consistent support and doesn’t underestimate his ability. This is all to the point where I think if the contact event had gone to plan, even if nobody else on the original crew survived, and it was just him, Jacobi, Maxwell, and Eiffel? Well, Kepler would be just fine with that. Eiffel would go out first, attempt to communicate with the aliens, and come back, maybe short a few limbs, maybe with some additional trauma, but ultimately fine.
Because beneath all the bluster and pop-culture references, Eiffel is stunningly good at his job.
He’s good at not dying, at thinking on his feet.
He’s made first contact with aliens when no-one else in presumably hundreds of  other missions has.
Because you know what they say, when you’ve got a pig that good.....

Long Story Short (I Survived) | Din Djarin
Tumblr media
Okay, I apparently write for Din now. This is set after It’s A Long Way Down and will feature the same Grey!Jedi reader, I am done with finals and am intending to write a fic between this one and the first one for Chapter 13!
i forgot that din took his helmet off in the first fic i wrote for him, so we’re going to call this - another separate instance in which reader could have seen helmet less din  - and change one saber to two
if you’d like to be added to tags for when I write for din, please let me know! until then...
@earthtokace / @demigod-dragonrider-schoolidol / @kyber-queen / @kaikai1324 / @snippy-tano / @fractiouskat / @doctorsteeb
SPOILERS FOR THE BELIEVER
Din is staring down at the Imperial console when he feels it creep up upon him. It’s a niggling fear, one that sinks deep down into the pit of his stomach and very nearly disappears - which gives him hope that it’ll just dissipate and die - until realization smacks him right back into reality.
“You’ll have to take your helmet off.”
He’d felt this same emotion when IG-11 had coerced him into taking his helmet off when he’d been injured. It had felt the same, affected him the same, paralyzed him the same.
Panic. It’s panic.
The last time he’d done this had been out of necessity, out of fear, and that had been the only reason he’d survived. He’d broken The Creed to save his own life and of those who had been with him when the Moff attacked. Now, staring at this console, the life of his son is at stake if he doesn’t take this helmet off.
Din whispers into the corners of his frightened mind. I’m scared.
You had accompanied Mayfeld and Din as the third party (since Boba and Fennec had Cara) and had displayed skill in aiding him with the bands of pirates who had attacked their transport of Rhydonium. His mind was still spinning with the sheer speed in which you had spun those lightsabers. He didn’t think a person could move that fast.
Around the corner and turned away from Din, you allow yourself to feel the whispers of The Force encircling your mind - the newly acquired bond you’d somehow formed with Din since having seen Ahsoka - and whispered in reply I know. A beat of silence passes before you continue. Remember who you’re doing this for.
In the moment that Din’s fear threatens to overtake him, you send waves of comfort and assurance through your Bond in the Force - which shouldn’t exist to begin with, it’s not that easy to create bonds with a non-force sensitive -  to coax him into doing what needs to be done. Your eyes are turned. Your focus is on Mayfeld and the dozens of Imperial Officers who surround you.
As he removes his helmet, Din remembers. He remembers your boundless laughter playing with The Child. He remembers the way his son beams at you, the way he falls asleep on specific words of lullabies because that’s always the precise moment your voice goes just soft enough that he feels as if he needs no more comfort. Din remembers the way you’d watched on in silence, quietly mourning a relationship that had yet to reach its peak, and how breathless you’d appeared - and overjoyed, he still hasn’t recovered from the sudden hug you gave him upon return to the Razor Crest - when he’d brought Grogu back inside after Ahsoka claimed he could not be trained.
Remember who you’re doing this for.
Maker help anyone who dared to cross him when his child, his son - the one attachment he has not verbally acknowledged yet, but everyone else has, including you - is the one in danger. When you are the one in danger.
Maker help them.
You are not anticipating what comes next.
This was supposed to be easy. Get in, get the coordinates for the cruiser, and get out. Mayfeld had mentioned to you after Din had entered the mess hall that he’d need to take his helmet off in order to access the terminal, and on instinct you had turned away from the mess to survey the crowd around you.
Your lightsabers - now meshed together into the staff slung across your back - lay comfortably and within reach as dozens of Imperial troops brush past you and congratulate both you and Mayfeld on being the only transport to bring back the Rhydonium.
  “Trooper? Hey, trooper!”
Mayfeld’s hand shoots out before you can protest, and your head is whipping back just enough to ensure that Din hasn’t been found out. “No.” Mayfeld murmurs, shaking his head. “Not yet.”
You’re not focused on him. You’re focused on the dark hair that frames the very visible head of the same man you’d resigned yourself to falling in love with.
His helmet is off.
Dread curls itself in your veins as you and the former Imperial turn to the mess hall. You’ve managed to respect Din’s wishes in refraining from both seeing his face - and using his name, you’re only allowed to do that in private - since you met, but circumstances have ruined the reverential act he would’ve saved for marriage. That was when he’d had removed his helmet to allow you to see him.
The thing is though.. You’ve always seen him. You don’t need to see his face to know Din Djarin’s heart, and his heart lays with you and that baby. The one he’s fighting to get back.
“No, son. What’s your TK number?”
Lucky for you, you’d been alive during The Clone Wars. You can worm yourself and him out of this situation fairly easily.
“This is our Commanding Officer TK-593, and First Officer TK-616, sir.” Mayfeld slaps your back as the two of you enter the mess hall and flank either side of Din. You cannot bring yourself to look at him head on. It would not be fair, not in the midst of the pure fear that’s coursing through his mind.
I’m right here. You whisper into the heart of the fear that plagues him, fingers idly tracing the inside of his hand as you stare the Imperial Officer down. As expected, Din visibly relaxes at the gentle trace of your fingertips against his palm. We’re surviving.
“I am Imperial Combat Assault Transport TK-111, sir.” Mayfeld continues, folding his hands over each other as he stands at relaxed parade rest at Din’s side. “I’m afraid you’re going to have to speak up to him a little bit since his vessel lost pressure in Taanab.”
This gives you the brilliant idea of conversing with Din in Tusken sign, something he’d been adamant to teach you after your excursion on Tatooine.
“She’s our interpreter. We call her Whip.’’
While Mayfeld guides the conversation with the officer, you and Din are easing into talking in Tusken about however many ways this can go wrong, but then he changes the topic to something you’re not quite ready to acknowledge.
You can look at me, you know. He signs, hands frantic as he tries and fails to find your eyes. You value him - and his heart - far too much to be the first person he knows to have seen his face.
No. You shake your head. I can’t.
And you don’t. You only look at his side profile for the remainder of that trip, refusing to allow yourself the satisfaction of being the one person he cared about that has seen his face. Seen him.
Like I said. You don’t need to see Din Djarin’s face to see him.
***
Din is almost positive he’s ready to accept how he feels about you.
The minute Mayfeld shoots that officer in the chest, you spring into action and whip that staff off your back - disengaging the lock that holds the two lightsabers together - and the world explodes in a flurry of blue as you perform the sword and shield method he’s seen you do flawlessly at least five times now.
You don’t look at him even after you’re back in Slave One. He and Cara have escorted Mayfeld back to the surface of the planet, and it’s just you and Fett in the cockpit. Despite the clone and bounty hunter being so much older then you, there’s something oddly comforting knowing you’re sitting next to has suffered as much as you have. If not more.
Long story short, we both survived.
“You know, I’ve been with you a grand total of a day and I can already see it in your eyes, Whip.” The nickname Mayfeld had come up with in the facility has already made its rounds on the ship, and Boba feels it’s more then appropriate for the first Jedi he’s met since the kids who put him in the Sarlacc to begin with. Being inside of that thing had mellowed him out. He had accepted his life for what it was now. Oddly enough.. Boba Fett is at peace. “You’re lovesick for the Mandalorian.”
  “Boba-”
The older man, one who mirrored what you’d always envisioned the clones - may Maker rest their souls - to look like as they aged, removed his helmet to look at you. “Take it from someone who knows. He gets you. You get him.” Boba turned his gaze back towards the ramp of Slave One where Din was talking in low voices with Cara. “Wish I’d had a jeti like you who saw me despite the armor.”
He stopped speaking after that.
Taking a deep breath, you descend from the cockpit just as Slave One takes off again, the coordinates for Moff Gideon’s cruiser inputted into the navi-computer. Fennec and Cara move by you to join Boba in the cockpit which leaves you and Din alone in the cargo bay.
It’s deadly silent.
Ner jeti. He whispers. You can hear his thoughts as clear as you hear your own. Why will you not look at me?
Your eyes slam shut as his fingers curl around your hips. You cannot do this to him, no matter how much you want to - no matter how much you desire to finally kiss those lips you’ve dreamt idly about so many times - because here’s the truth of it: You have suffered, parts of you have died, everything you have ever known has died, you have lost everything and didn’t even try to save those on the other end of those attachments you’d formed... but something, something good, put you right here. Right here in this moment with Din Djarin mere moments before plunging into the subject of your night terrors after months of being tormented by nightmares of your fellow Jedi being tortured by the Empire for simply existing.
And quite frankly, there’s no one else you’d rather take that plunge with.
That fact terrifies you.
“I can’t look at you, Din.” You whisper. “I can’t look at you because then that would be breaking your Creed for me... and I can’t let you do that when the baby hasn’t even seen your face yet-”
“Oh, believe me.” A clunk echoes in the cargo-bay as the beskar falls from his hands. Your heart stops and your breath catches in your throat as you tremble beneath his grasps, eyes still closed as he steps into the curve of your body - chest to your back - and lowers his entire head to your shoulder. “I intend for him to.”
Din lays a kiss at the nape of your neck. Maker... he’s real. Your head starts spinning as his kiss ascends right to the shell of your ear, in which he then whispers, “Open your eyes, Sarad.” and it’s such an intimate act on the behalf of someone who has not known love until you and the baby showed up that you can’t not open your eyes.
When you turn around, your world is enveloped in a mirage of onyx. Brown eyes.
“Din-” Din chuckles at your obvious reluctance because he is absolutely terrified to let you see him, the real him, vulnerable and waiting and desperate for the same acceptance.
“I told you my name way earlier then I ever anticipated I would.” He begins, taking your hands in his own to lay them against his cheeks. It has been so long since he allowed himself to accept touch, to accept that people in the galaxy were still gentle, that he trembles when your warmth seeps into his skin. “After what Bo-Katan told me and what Mayfeld kept saying in the transport... I’ve done alot of thinking recently, and I’m coming to the conclusion that maybe the way I was raised was wrong. There’s nothing wrong with taking the helmet off.” He exhales on a shaky breath and turns his face to kiss the inside of your hand. “But then again.. I’ve always wanted to around you.”
Your voice is small as you ask, “Why?”
“Because you’ve always seen me.” Din replies. “Despite the armor and the helmet, you’ve always seen me for who I was. You saw me as a father for the-” He swallows the knot in his throat and leans inward until you are a hairs breath apart, forehead resting against yours as he pulls your body into his own. “As a father for our child. Not just as a bounty hunter, but as a man. A man I could never see myself as. When you came around, I stopped surviving. I started living.” He snorted sharply through his nose. “I almost forgot what that felt like.. I think you pulled me back right before I forgot entirely.”
He’s so grateful. It’s hard to live feeling like you’re a ghost.
Din tests the waters of this desire radiating from you both by applying just the barest amount of pressure of his mouth on yours. As to be expected, your entire body quakes at the contact and it takes all his physical control to not allow his spinning head to make his knees give out and send him falling on the floor.
Oh.. he could get used to this. Used to this feeling.
He’s felt this before.
Joy.
“That’s the thing.” Inward, outward, forward and back again, you slowly allow yourself to succumb to Din’s kiss and grip his face in your hands just a little bit tighter. “I’ve always seen you.” You pull away just enough to force your eyes open, and then you are graced with the face of the man you love. You do. You love him, and you’ve accepted it. Kriffing Boba Fett. “And you know what? I thought I’d died before I met you. I never thought I’d make it here, much less be with you.. and I am so lucky.” There it is then, that breathless smile Din has pressed the sight of twice now into his memories, that presses itself into your aspect as the two of you look at each other.
  “Why are you lucky?”
You wink and shrug. ‘’Long story short?” You muse. “It’s a good thing I survived.”
Little to Din’s knowledge as he plunges into the mystery of his growing love for you - his flower, the one who made him bloom - that when he kisses you again, your eyes are wide open the entire time.
There’s never been quite so beautiful a sight as somebody who’s survived.
bonus: i am thinking about how beautiful pedro pascal was in this episode
