HI OKAY QUICK QUESTION- how do you name your ocs if you don’t mind me asking.

GOOD QUESTION i name them based on systems that change. i'll just use my splatoon ocs for reference too;

For First Names:

I tend to lean to names that are made based on a system the family uses traditionally. a lot of the character in stormy weather are named after either fish or names related to the sea- though there are exceptions of course.

also; they sometimes, like i previously stated, have rules to their names

Gar, Moray, and Piranha are all named after fish with sharp teeth. thats because Marlin wanted his kids to have intimidating names/sound scary. (hes also just a big goof)

with Hope and Whimsy, their names were accidental, but they have symbolism in the story. theyre Gar's kids who did, in fact, give him hope & whimsy overtime and helped him learn to appreciate things again.

Also spitballing names until they stick works well.

For Last Names;

I generally used names based on their species.

Tilly's last name is lescens, because its part of her scientific species name; Doryteuthis Opalescens- or the Opalescent Inshore Squid.

Gar Incirri's is based on what type of tentacle his octopus ancestor (the Giant Pacific Octopus). Octopus are classified between Incirrina/Incirrata, and Cirrina/Cirrata. The Giant Pacific octopus is under the sub-orser Incirrina, thus Gar's last name being Incirri- part of the name.

Then of course; Minnow Firefly, is just taken from their species common name, the Firefly Squid.

Otherwise, again, spitballing til it sticks works pretty well too.

I struggle with names, so I totally get you! I hope this helps!

okay so part 1/2 theres this one octopus in the lab i wwork at that is drivvin me up the fucking wwall because shes both super clevver and gay. my thesis is on howw microbial traces in tropical envvironments affects matin habits in mollusca both in captivvity and in the wwild and octopus 6b is the bane of my fucking life because for starters she keeps escapin her enclosure and eatin the shellfish speciments from the touch tank she also literally stole my wwatch once

2/2 and get this shes actually an incirrata octopus wwhich are one of the species wwho are recorded to exhibit homosexual behavvior in nature wwhich is fine and i support her but she also keeps seducin prevviously assumed heterosexual specimens wwhich is ruinin my thesis because im gettin NO heterosexual reproductivve data my life is bein fuckin terrorized by a kleptomanian lesbian houdini wwho also happens to be a cephalopod and fef says to forgivve her but i shant and wwont

Are There Any Gay Fish/Aquatic Animals? I Know Clownfish are Technically Trans, but That's The Only LGBT Rep I've Heard of in the Ocean.

Clownfish are not “technically” trans and I think you have a misunderstanding of what transgender means. Transgender just means someone who is a different gender to the one they were incorrectly assigned at birth, therefore no animal is transgender because no animals are assigned a gender at birth or adhere to a gender binary like humans do.

Clownfish are actually sequential hermaphrodites otherwise known more recently in humans as intersex.

As for homosexual behaviour in fish and marine animals, there’s quite a few! Not as big of a list as terrestrial mammals and birds but this is more to due with it being easier to observe the behaviour in them verses in marine animals.

Observed Homosexual behaviour in Fish

There is a few species of fish in which homosexual behaviour has been observed.

Green Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii)

Three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus)

Blackstripe Topminnow (Fundulus notatus)

Amazon Molly (Poecilia formosa)

This fish reproduce through gynogenesis meaning that this species of fish consist on only females. The females of these species therefore reproduce by parthenogenesis, therefore homosexual behaviour is very common.

European Bitterling (Rhodeus amarus)

Ten-spined Stickleback (Pungitius pungitius)

Bluegill Sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus)

Guiana Leaffish (Polycentrus schomburgkii)

Least Darter (Etheostoma microperca)

Jewel Fish (Hemichromis bimaculatus)

Mouthbreeding Fish (Tilapia macrocephala)

Grayling (Thymallus thymallus)

Common Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus)

Observed Homosexual behaviour in Marine Mammals

There’s been recorded observed behaviour found in dolphins, whales, pinnipeds and manatees.

Amazon River Dolphin (Inia geoffrensis)

Only male homosexuality observed with sexual and affectionate behaviours including mating with three types of penetrative sex (anal, genital slit or blowhole). This behaviour is common in captive males but it is unknown if it also is common in wild populations.

Spinner (Stenlla longirostris) and Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)

Orca / Killer Whale (Orcinus orca)

Orcas display primary male homosexual preference and behaviours such as courtship, affectionate, pair-bonding and sex in wild populations. They do not display these behaviours in captivity due to the lack of adequate care and not having their social needs met. These homosexual interactions have been found to be integral and important to the social life of male orcas.

Gray Whale (Eschrichtius robustus)

Bowhead Whale (Balaena mysticetus)

Northern Atlantic Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis)

Northern Elephant Seal (Mirounga angustirostris)

Gray Seal (Halichoerus grypus) and Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina)

Both these seals display common male and female homosexuality and courtship, sexual, affectionate and parenting behaviours displayed primarily both in the wild and captivity.

New Zealand Sea Lion (Phocarctos hookeri)

Northern Fur Seal (Callorhinus ursinus)

A current map of Talayn. The human nation of Awen is divide into the three kingdoms of Cerri, Dagda, and Medb. Originally the super power of this nation was Dagda, owing to it’s population that had dwarfed Cerri and Medb. Then, suddenly, Medb gained the help of the newly formed Republic of Argonaut and began a war with Dagda. Unable to gain the upper hand, Dagda put political pressure on Cerri to help them. Instead, Cerri allied with the Serpentes Empire, Mebd, and the Republic and fought against Dagda. This reshaped the continent of Awen, with Cerri gaining the most territory thanks to the deals it struck with the other nations. Even after generations Dagda is still paying reparations from the war. The Serpentes Empire stands on a vast continent that is made up if a vast arid desert and a tropical rainforest. The serpent race known as the Naga live on this continent and originally were made of dozens of smaller city states and clans with no major hierarchy. Then, hundreds of years ago, a small tribe known as Serpentes began a conquest that brought the entire continent under their control. They have been in power for over eight hundred years, stories say, and the leader that led the conquest is a major folk hero. The Incirrata Dominion and the Republic of Argonaut were originally one territory. One day a subsection of the population on the outermost isles became enraged by decisions made by the Ruling Queen of the time and staged a cessation and revolt against the crown. The monarchy was to proud to ask for help and tried to settle the civil war on its own before it became obvious that, though they could win it would completely ruin the country. The princess saw a means of peace that would save both sides and usurped her mother. This allowed a peace treaty and the formation of the Republic. That Princess is hailed as a Saint by the people of the Republic to this day. Both territories are home to a cephalopod-based race called Hibaars.
