vampire squid taxonomy
vampire squids are cephalopods in the family vampyroteuthis
they are the only extant species in this family, but there are 3 extinct genera in this family. (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1055790307001698)
despite the name, vampire squid are more closely related to octopi than squid, this is due to their 8 arms, placing them in the superorder Octopodiformes, instead of Decapodiformes (the squid and cuttlefish)
it was discovered in the late 1890s, and described later in 1903.
the feature that distinguishes the vampire squid from both octopi and squid, is two retractible filaments, which are separate from the arms, and this is why it is neither a true octopus, or a squid (Young, R. E. (1967). Homology of Retractile Filaments of Vampire Squid. Science, 156(3782), 1633–1634. http://www.jstor.org/stable/1721610)

Animal Crossing Fish Dish Friday - #18
Brought to you by a marine biologist with pen and ink...
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
Squid Ink Curry
Tumblr media
In ACNH: 1. Catch a Squid. 2. Cook at a stove with 3 Flour & 1 Squid
In Real Life: from India
Fish of Choice: There are two squid ink dishes in ACNH, but IRL, ink is usually collected from cuttlefish, although squid are sometimes used. Anyway, it is more accurately called "cephalopod ink".
Other Ingredients: The thing about curry is that it's defined by the "curry spices" used, and not really the base, which appears to be anything you want that will create some sort of sauce.
Here's a recipe that looks pretty good!
Mollusca is such a crazy group of animals. It's still hard to wrap my head around the fact that cephalopods - octopuses, squid, cuttlefish and all their various tentacled friends - are related to bivalves, like clams and oysters. They just...seem so distant from each other! And yeah, I've known this fact for 20+ years, but there's that magic that keeps driving me back to biology in general. To be honest, this relation is even more crazy to me than the cow and whale relation - at least those two both have eyes and are very mammal, y'know? Between a squid and a clam, they couldn't be more different - the disparity between their intelligence and body plans in crazy.
One of the most obvious differences is, of course, that one of them has a shell and the other one doesn't. That's so obvious, right?
WRONG*.
Tumblr media
(*OK, not completely wrong - the majority of octopuses don't have shells, but the other cephalopods do!)
Just like with fish, you can clean and cut your own squid for dinner - very often, if you go to the fish market, you're going to see whole squid for sale. Get them. They are an extremely versatile (and sustainable!) protein (my friend at work makes a stuffed squid that is soooo good, but you can just make fried calamari, or throw some cut squid "noodles" into soup. Endless possibilities!). When you go to clean your squid, you'll notice that this soft-bodied animal has a stiffening rod in its body called the "pen". You'll obviously remove this, because no one wants to chew on toenail. And whoever named this structure was on fire - calling this thin structure the pen when squid make ink? Amazing. (It's also called the gladius, but pen is better. Sorry not sorry.)
Tumblr media
Pens come in many shapes and sizes!
The origin of the pen is actually the remnants of the cephalopod shell in decapodiformes, the squid, and one octopodiforme, the vampire squid. Just like their cousins, the clams and the snails, cephalopods of the past had shells - just look at the ammonites and the still-alive nautilus. Squid traded their shell defenses for maneuverability and speed, but they didn't lose them completely! Same for cuttlefish which have a similar structure called a "cuttlebone".
And there you have it! Bon appetite!

Tentacles & Beaks Of Cephalopods:
one of my random thoughts:
wondering if a squid and an octopus have similar or non similar tentacles.
so I googled it!

Given its transparent body, the glass octopus (Vitreledonella richardi) remains one of the most elusive creatures of the deep sea. Rare photographs such as this reveal an array of opaque organs and a glimpse of its unusually shaped eyes. Scientists think the upward tilt and elongation of its rectangular eyes are adaptations to help the glass octopus avoid predation.

Final Major Project (FMP)
Artist Research:
Iris Van Herpen S/S 2011
Iris Van Herpen is a Dutch fashion designer and couturier renowned for her futuristic, darkly fantastical aesthetic. Van Herpen's designs are utterly unique and works of art in themselves. Her early adoption of 3D printing technologies put her at the foremost of the technology's introduction into fashion industry.
Iris Van Herpen was inspired by water and the life that exists within it. Herpen's designs, on the other hand, were much more concerned with structure than with colour.
The clever use of materials allowed for the creation of incredible effects, such as the garment above, which appears to be failing water around the wearer. The effect is remarkably realistic, and it is reasonable to believe that it is water captured perfectly around the model in a second snapshot. However, it is not, and it is a magnificent work of design and engineering. However, consideration must also be given to the garment itself, which consists primarily of a silver and lightly reflective, undisturbed surface, similar to that of a body of water. Cut outs follow the contours of the body, possibly linking to streamlining in the way that black guides expand out from a point and glide with the curves of the body.
This structure, which almost resembles the bone structures of reptiles and fish, both of which can be found in certain coral reefs or other aquatic habitats around the world, is another great example of the design's knack for finely engineered pieces in this collection. I also see the shape and movement of an octopus or any other Octopodiformes - a superorder of species that includes the octopus and vampire squid, both of which have eight legs. This structure has eight 'legs' that are all warped and tangled, almost like armour protecting the human form beneath. The pure white is a great feature of the piece because it highlights every grate and detail while also clashing with the wearer's fleshy tones.
However, there appears to be a 'good' and a 'bad' representation. Herpen has used oil-stick blacks in places where white and colour have been used. This example is similar to the white piece above, but unlike the 'legs' from the first white piece, these are cut out as bulges, almost hostilely. Rather than concealing the form underneath, it exaggerates its shape and size. The 'legs' are also much thicker - much more muscular and imposing - but they also have a sleek elegance to them, bringing together the two sides of delicate colour and dangerous beauty that surround marine life.
Another excellent example of Herpen's sleek engineered design. A dress with an intricate collection of groves, grates, and gaps that reminds me of two shells. When considering the levels and depths of the detail, it appears that only methods such as 3D printing are capable of producing such a design. This is an excellent example of how technological advancements have aided in the development of new methods of using new materials, and Herpen has taken advantage of these advancements. The matte black of the feature also contributes to the piece's plastic, futuristic appearance, but it also appears natural to me. It appears to have grown and has a pastoral symmetry, possibly representing a type of coral or plant. It is clear from Herpen's SS11 collection that sea life and the details of those species can have a big impact on how materials are used, especially those of new techniques like digital design and 3D printing.

An Octopus Could Have Predicted the Election Better Than the Media
A few days ago, a parrot named Eric saved his owner from a fire in the middle of the night. It happened in Canada and the bird has since become famous because it sounded the alarm before the smoke detectors did.
Most journalists in the European and American establishments are like those fire alarm systems, slower and more ineffective than Eric the Parrot. They insisted on a landslide victory for Joe Biden right up to the last minute, even though the only thing that looks anything like a landslide at this point is the defeat of the big corporate editorialists. If anyone thinks this will make them reflect, they don’t understand how contumacious the progressive bias is. For the sake of killing Trump, they were willing to declare that Joe Biden was a charismatic candidate and that Kamala Harris would lead the way in post-election national reconciliation. They were not making predictions, but trying to impose them.
At the 2010 World Cup, Paul the Octopus became famous. He was a cephalopod from the Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany, credited with extraordinary intelligence from a very young age by his handlers. To test his talent, they used him to predict the results of the World Cup, giving him a choice between several pairs of boxes of food, each one with the flag of a different country in contention. Paul the Octopus, also known as the Psychic Octopus, got all eight pairings right, becoming the first demoscopic star from the family of octopodiformes. After witnessing what happened last week, I’m convinced that the octopus soothsayer, Eric the Parrot, and Phil the Groundhog would have predicted the election results better than all the editorialists, pollsters, and analysts combined.
That the United States is closing the door on socialism—at least partially—remains the greatest contribution to world politics that the most important democracy of our century could have made. For months, and right up to election night, the left was leaning towards revolution, either by trying to make it or by excusing it. At the height of the pandemic, the Axis of Evil embodied by Cuba, Venezuela, and, of course, China, continues to gain allies for its cause through violence. Chile is the latest example, surrendering to the left after many months of enduring the flames of burning churches and stores.
Biden and Harris have played that satanic game: if you want riots, vote for Trump; if you want peace, vote for us. Yet that game can go very wrong, because if anything goes with the American DNA, it is respect for freedom. And nobody likes to be threatened, especially not if the one promoting the coercion is a guy like Joe Biden, who only had the courage to quietly condemn Black Lives Matter violence when the polls—the real ones, the inside ones—predicted that street chaos could take a toll on his campaign.
Although the American political battlefield is still wide open, the fundamental aspect of what happened last week was the discrediting of the big media outlets. It’s not just that their crazy election predictions weren’t right. It’s that the four years they’ve spent pontificating about the present era, as though speaking on behalf of all Americans, have just collapsed like a house of cards.
Immigrants have backed Trump, BLM’s street noise has nothing to do with the sentiment of the majority of the American people, the president’s pro-life attitude has not been discredited, and the middle class is far more concerned with the economy, work, and freedom than Ms. Harris’ personal obsessions with gender identity, her publicized and put-on-display Indian heritage, and the sexual diversity of the Pacific Ocean’s Marianna Trench amoebas.
The Democrats and their allies in the media led us to believe that Trump was backed by a band of freaks, little more than unscrupulous bounty hunters, conspiratorial leaders, and drunken cowboys who organize riots every night in the cantinas. Now we can see that, no, Trump represents at least half of the country, and especially the working class, the humble and simple people, the small business owners, the families that sustain the salaries and vices of the establishment and the various public administration bureaucracies with their daily work and their taxes. Without them, without their money and their work, neither the Hollywood millionaires of the caviar left nor the government officials would have been able to back a candidacy as crazy and inconsistent as Biden’s. They would have been too busy trying to make a living by their own means to entrust the U.S. economy to the extreme left of someone like Kamala Harris.
Moreover, the fact that none of the candidates won a landslide victory invites a certain amount of contention, regardless of who finally wins. That a country is politically divided is not a drama, but the health and economic crisis that is hitting everyone makes it necessary to close wounds as soon as possible and to seek a national reconciliation that, although difficult, is not impossible—if the left renounces once and for all intimidation through street violence. Perhaps we ought to look towards a celebrated definition from the Spanish satirist Jardiel Poncela: “Love is a man and a woman who agree on one point and disagree on everything else.” After all, it’s not a matter of giving in ideologically, but of seeking unity and points of union. It’s the people alone—and not the politicians—who can get the United States out of the chasm into which the Chinese virus has plunged the entire West. And we all need it.
