6 Things I Learned from the Lisa Frankenstein Commentary
Tumblr media
We don’t get movies like Lisa Franeknstein often, which is a shame because it’s endlessly charming yet delightfully twisted. While it disappointed at the box office, it has "cult classic" written all over it.
The coming-of-age horror-comedy is out today on Blu-ray and DVD. Among the special features is an audio commentary by Zelda Williams. Here are 6 things I learned…
Tumblr media
1. Catch Me If You Can inspired the opening credit sequence.
The opening credit sequence, which briefly depicts the Creature's love story from his previous life in the style of Victorian shadow box art, was inspired by Catch Me If You Can.
"We wanted to do something interesting with the credits in this bit. I was really inspired by Catch Me If You Can, which I thought the opening credits were particularly interesting and helped establish the story before we ever got to it. And because Creature doesn't speak this whole movie, I wanted an opportunity to show what his life would have been like."
Tumblr media
2. The film was originally intended to be rated R.
Although Lisa Frankenstein pushes the PG-13 rating as far as it can go, it was originally intended to be a hard R. Williams cites the party scene, in which Lisa originally smoked a laced joint rather than drinking a PCP cocktail, as a difficult revision.
"This is where stuff got a little complicated when we were going from R-rated to PG-13. Originally there was a coated joint they were passing around. This is one of the only scenes that I'm not sure I'm as fond of in comparison to the joint stuff. Most of the rest of the changes were fine, but this one I find very strange. It's just a very different reaction and interaction than what used to be there. However, these are the things that happen when making a movie."
Tumblr media
3. Creature is an homage to Day of the Dead's Bub.
Not only Lisa is seen watching George A. Romero's Day of the Dead in the film, but the Creature is an homage to its iconic zombie, Bub.
"Creature for me is definitely an homage to Buster Keaton, but he's also an homage to the zombie you just saw on screen, Bub, who was in Day of the Dead, a Romero movie that I'm very fond of. It was an incredibly emotive and a very intelligent zombie and ended up getting revenge against the asshole in the movie. It was one of my favorite monsters ever made, so when I could put that on screen during the movie, it made me very happy."
Tumblr media
4. Zelda hid a tribute to her father, Robin Williams.
Williams is the daughter of Robin Williams, and she included his 1983 comedy album, Throbbing Python of Love, among the records scattered on the floor in Lisa's living room.
"Oh, there's Dad! We used one of Dad's vinyl albums because we had to scatter some across the floor." She refers to it as "a little, mini Easter Egg for me."
Tumblr media
5. The police officers are named after John Waters.
The police officers in the film are Officer John (played by Walker Babington) and Officer Waters (Sylvia Grace Crim) — named on a whim in honor of cult filmmaker, John Waters.
"They asked me to name the cops, because obviously they needed to have name tags, so I named them Officer John and Officer Waters." She thought no one would notice since they're so small, but a viewer pointed it out at a test screening.
Tumblr media
6. The film is sprinkled with movie references.
Williams wore her influences on her sleeve with her directorial debut, and she pointed out several references on the commentary:
A Trip to the Moon (clip featured in Lisa's surreal dream sequence)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (stylistic inspiration on the dream sequence)
Weird Science (the party scene)
Suspiria (red lighting during drug sequence)
My Boyfriend's Back (camera shot from inside a grave looking up at characters)
Kill Bill (weapon point-of-view shot)
E.T. (a boy on a bike — played by Diablo Cody's son — at the end)
Notting Hill (reading together on a bench at the end)
Lisa Frankenstein is available now on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital via Universal.

✦ LAST NIGHT, I DREAMT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
— summary : you couldn't let go of what you had, and so couldn't your dreams.
— word count : 0,6k
— warnings : angst!! no happy ending, major character death, sleeping as a way to escape, mentions of medication & hallucinating, grief, natasha was reader's gf, andd lmk if i missed any.
a/n : inspired by warsh_tippy and zelda by whatever, dad. also this is so rushed sorry.
Tumblr media
grieving isn't easy.
especially when you're all alone.
you listened to the whispers of the wind, head resting near the window of your bed, staring into the endless-foggy view of the forest outside.
you yawn. it's only 5 pm.
but every hour feels the same. no hour is special anymore. no more waiting at 9 pm, no more bell ringing at 10 pm, no more movie nights at 12 am, no more falling asleep together at 2 am, and no more love letters left at 6 am.
you blink, trying to stay awake, but the thought of sleeping through the day never felt greater.
but that's all you've been doing. sleeping. waking up still tired. existing for a few hours. then sleeping again.
it's starting to become a loop everyday.
your thoughts ramble on and on in a circle continuously before falling asleep.
the silence was deafening.
you woke up with a slight headache. you just fell asleep. why are you up again?
you look around for your watch, it was on the windowsill, you left it there before falling asleep.
you shrug it off.
maybe you were hallucinating.
you walk to your cold kitchen, passing the laundry room and pantry. but maybe it was the hallucinating part that made you hear a thud coming from that direction.
you pause. noises were coming from either one of the rooms. maybe it's mice in the pantry. but that's very unlikely.
tip-toeing your way to the pantry, you open it. getting a clear view of the empty shelves and open box of cereal.
huh.
maybe you were hallucinating.
you sigh, slamming the pantry door in frustration. you should probably take the medication you were recommended.
"y/n, detka? is that you?"
your heart dropped.
you froze. blood running cold. hands clammy.
it was her voice.
you approached the door slowly, the door was slightly open. you could see a figure folding clothes. and then a glimpse of red hair.
you gasp, jump a little even.
you opened the door. mouth open, shocked.
she was alive. she looked alive. she's moving. she's smiling. she's folding clothes. she's no longer the dead body you mourned over.
"nat?" your voice was shaky.
she looked up, your eyes met hers.
you couldn't believe it. you had so many questions. she was right in front of you.
you shook your head. closing your eyes. tears were overflowing.
"hey, hey, you okay?" natasha cups your face. your eyes flutter, she's touching you.
"nat?" you sob.
"yes? why are you crying?" she asks. your mind went blank, you felt like you couldn't speak or breathe. "don't cry, hey don't cry. i'm right here."
those three words made you cry even more.
you hug her close, you hugged her so tightly. you were sobbing into her shoulder, tears were running down your eyes like waterfalls.
"nat. why." were the only words you said. you could feel her hug you tightly. "i'm here." she replies.
everything doesn't make sense anymore. but you don't care. natasha is back. she's hugging you, kissing your forehead. you're crying, sobbing, everywhere.
"don't cry, baby. i'm here." she wipes your tears.
"are you really?" your vision was getting blurry. not from tears. "nat?" you call out, your vision is getting worse. you couldn't make out natasha's face.
"nat!"
you jolt awake. hair all sweaty. dry tears were covering your cheeks.
you look around.
it's silent. and it was deafening.
"nat!" you jump from your bed. running out of your room to the laundry room. "nat?"
it was empty.
it wasn't real.
she wasn't there.
what did you ever do to deserve that? for your brain to come up with the most painful dream? the most painful, realistic dream?
it felt real.
you thought it was real.
but it never happened.

The Quest Beginneth...
Zelda: You know, watching the D&D movie makes me wish we could play D&D.
Joker: Yeah. Just wish anyone here knew how to DM.
Leaf: Or could come up with a campaign on short notice.
Isabelle: Maybe…someone’s already made a campaign we can play?
Bowser: Ha! As if anyone would have a campaign ready to go on the off chance one of us decided we wanted to—
???: Ah.
*everyone stops, then turns to see who spoke*
Galeem: *floating in the doorway, vibrating at a frequency that could shatter glass*
Isabelle: Uh…are you okay, Galeem?
Galeem: *strangely high-pitched* I’m fine.
Leaf: You sure about tha—
Galeem: *shoots off down the hallway like a bullet*
Bowser: …that was weird.
Joker: …so anyway, we were talking about—
*golden chains suddenly shoot into the room and grab everyone, pulling them down the hallway as they scream…*
===
Zelda: *slowly waking up* Gah, my head…huh?
*everyone is chained to chairs surrounding a table*
Bowser: Is this some…half-assed kidnapping attempt?
Joker: If it’s who I think it is, he never does anything half-assed. This is something else.
Zelda: …wait a second.
Galeem: *off-screen* Years and years of work…and only now may I put all of this to use.
*Galeem floats into view, hovering above the head chair and elegantly setting down a very stuffed binder*
Galeem: I have waited so long to be able to indulge in this sort of thing…
Isabelle: Is he…
Galeem: And now, all my waiting pays off.
Joker: He actually is.
Galeem: Welcome, everyone…to Dungeons and Dragons, as run by your least friendly enemy and ever so hard-working DM!
*beat*
Leaf: Couldn’t you have just asked—
Galeem: I’M NOT GOOD AT SOCIALIZING, OKAY?!

AM I YAPPIN ABT YOUNG NEIL HEADCANNONS INSTEAD OF WORKING OR SLEEPING?! YEAHH LETS FUCKIN GOOOOOOOOOOOO
If you fucking know me or see my ACC (and my other blog accs) yk I love the OG ships like jophen/ startech (joseph x stephen) mobillce (mobile x wallace) and maybe a few other non-cannon ships like kimona (Kim x romona) and...fuck idk the ship name for hollie x roxie or Kim x Lisa but yeah those too. For neil, personally, I'm a nordegrim shipper :)) Sorry, neilphen fans :((
Since I imagine he's still on collage I assume he's taking sonthing/ changed courses into somthing more...movie thing? Idk. Mainly working with cameras, screen writing, anything movie based or whatever
Since for Joe I made him Hispanic, other scott as Chinese, I don't really know what to do for the quirky silly little guy like neil. Gimme some ideas if y'all ever see this
Has attachment issues. Or fear of being left alone or not included
He has eczema that flairs up during the winter. Sometimes, he cries silently because of how itchy he is and doesn't like the cream the doctors told him to use because it's a weird texture he isn't comfortable with
Whenever stephen is back home from work, they usually sit down and watch movies together or during dinner. Young neil yaps about a movie, and stephen replies with a dry and simple "mhm, " "yeah", "that's cool -" and sometimes the occasional questions. Neil doesn't mind since he knows stephen is tired
He sometimes steals money from stephen but not all the time. He pays stephen back quickly by making some dinner (that he fucked up)
Favorite games have to be anything RPG based and zelda. Maybe he also got into the virtual world hype like UB funkies, webkinz, neopets, or club penguin (mainly UB funkies)
If he dose have a job I imagine he'd work at the second cup just to hang out with Stacy more, maybe a comic book store, or at no account video with Kim so he can watch more movies for free
I imagine his interest related friends has to be hollie (bc I see hollie also being a cinaphile), Joseph (because he wants to learn how to operate cameras and stuff and make it look cool by editing) and Jimmy (fellow zelda and starwars fan)
He has acne/ acne scars and back acne (I think that's the term) and he always picks/scratches at it
Speaking of picking. He always picks at his fingers and sometimes peels off a good chunk to the point it is bleeding bad, so he has bandaids on his hands and fingers most of the time. He doesn't mind which sorta bandaid. He likes the colorful ones that have like a character on it, but he worries if he might be too distracting for him when he's in class
I love how ironic it is for him to wear a heart on his sleeve sorta shirt even though he doesn't really show his feelings that often. He has the same ass stare all the time, and I think it's silly. So I just imagine he would say whatever is in his head without second thought, or he would mumble it if he thinks it's weird. So whenever he talks about his feelings, like how he feels about the whole "band abandoning him" situation, he actually means It and doesn't really hide it at all.
Steph (Neil's older sister) got him a pair of headphones bc thier parents were always fighting and a Walkman so he can listen to some music. He still uses those headphones to this day even though their broken in half, the sound quality is terrible and the ear puff thingy is crumbling
Whenever he goes out to the mall or out with anyone, he either has his hands in his pocket or out, bc someone has to grab onto his wrist so he wouldn't stop and stare at things (it's mainly Stephen and Kim who has to grip onto his wrist and drag him along. He dont mind tho :/ meanwhile stacy just holds onto his hand and stares with him)
Whenever stephen has a day off and he sees neil playing video games, he asks neil if he finishes his homework. If neil says no, stephen takes away his Gameboy color, keep it in his room and tell him to do his homework. If yes then stephen would just shrug it off, ruffle his hair up and say "ight, cool"
Neil was probably the first to find out that stephen was gay when stephen brought Joseph over (make of that as you will)
He writes movie reviews online and hopes people will see em but his writing skills are ass and he just describes whatever he can and think "yeah that's good enough"
Stephen treats neil like family since well, steph (Neil's older sister) isn't in contact with him that much. And because of the name similarities, neil just treats stephen like steph
His "stuffy" are those hot rubber water bottles (I forgor the name but you pour hot water into them and they help you with cramps and aches and shit-) with a wool sleeve wrapped around it
Since this rp acc is a bit related to the stephen acc. He likes bone crusher a lot! Since he mainly stays home, he has a new buddy to talk to and hang out with. But he leaves all the chores to stephen like cleaning out the litter box or something
Ever since he found out stephen had a cat he was pissed that stephen named the cat "bone crusher" not Link, Skull Kid,Meowth,Litten or Shinx or somthing cool like that but he continues to call bone crusher, bone crusher.
He has a bike and takes it to his college campus. He has the gear for it, too. Helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and gloves. Stephen said if he doesn't wear em he'll get into an accident, and that scared neil
Idk why, but i imagine him being the type to collect... something! Maybe anything to fill up his already messy room!
He's a maximalist (I think that's how you spell it), as you can see from his room
OUGHHH, I CAN'T CHOOSE BETWEEN MAKING NEIL A DEMI BOY OR MAKING NEIL TRANS FTM AJXJWJXKWKXKWKKXKS
I imagine he has those window markers to doodle on his window or to doodle out ideas for another screen play
I imagine him and Stacy are pretty much on the platonic and cute relationship wise. Holding hands, cuddling all that sorta stuff and stacy likes to listen to Neil's rambles about movies and how good/bad they are
Neil likes it whenever he receives gifts :DDD and tries to pay back by acts of service or something idk. Even if it's his birthday or Christmas he makes sure he owes everybody a equal amount. For example (*COUGH COUGH* DS SITUATION) he's gotta pay back stephen by taking care of bone crusher for a day maybe, doing Stephen's chores and stuff
Not a neil headcannon but I imagine stacy trying to watch the movies neil recommend her so she can catch up and talk to neil abt it and I think it's really cute and sweet :DDD
Yk damn well he's got a BIG ASS forehead underneath all that hair. Justin Bieber lookin ah. No wonder why young neil is Canadian/j
Also not a neil headcannon. But I imagine everyone calling stephen, STEVEN (IDK HOW STEPHENS NAME IS PRONOUNCED. IS IT STEVEN OR STEPH-EM WJKDWKDJWN) that includes neil but Joseph calls stephen by his last name (stills) (joseph just calls everyone by thier last names to seem fancy and shit expect for Neil's. He just calls neil, kid or just neil because he doesn't know to how to read Neil's last name nor say it so...he just calls neil, neil)
Bases around one headcannon I saw. I forgor what acc and where it came from (I'll go ahead and credit them if I find it it) but since neil had like parents who always fought or is strict as hell he perfected the ways of walking around the house quiet af and accidentally scars ppl bc of this

begging you to just post all your spot thoughts your art of him is so good... slurping it up like some kinda pasta dish
OF COURSE!! id be happy to! i have. so many thoughts about that silly dude.. here are my crazy spot headcanons 😁
he seems like the kinda guy who would like mint choc chip icecream
i think he’s autistic😁😁
there is no way that man is straight
i think when he worked for alchamax, him and liv octavius were kinda like. frenemies? i guess?? as in, they were coworkers and whatnot but were also kinda friendly rivals! i think liv definitely didn’t care that much for jonathan though since she was the head scientist and had a lot of other stuff to worry about- i like to think jonathan thought they were best friends and liv barely knew his name LMAO i think if she and him ever were to reunite after his incident, they’d definitely be a lot closer, bonding over wanting to destroy spiderman LOL
he definitely, albeit very briefly, debated actually adopting a dalmatian after miles’ comment
he watched better call saul and loved it.. this is the most important spot headcanon.. to me
i think at some point while travelling through dimensions (possibly before going to mumbattan, which would definitely recontexualise that comment he makes about not recognising himself in the mirror) he discovered an alternate version of himself, one that was still human. and that fucked him up big time and made him sad <\3 breh idk
i like to think the reason human spot appears in the movie with both short and long hair is because, when he was working on the collider, it took up almost all of his time, leading to jonathan pulling a bunch of all nighters and neglecting himself a bit, leading to his hair and beard growing out! when his work on the collider eased up nearing its completion, he got a haircut
i love the idea that his face hole can’t. actually close so when he sleeps it’s just perpetually open LOL maybe it subtly grows and shrinks when he inhales and exhales or something like that snooorkk mimimimi
he listens to weezer and talking heads it’s the truth
he can’t cook at all he lives off of two minute noodles like a struggling university student
he loves puzzle games, he’s definitely at a ridiculously high level in candy crush, he was probably a zelda nerd when he was younger
he used to wear a lot of fun button up shirts to his work (this one’s backed up by some of his concept art!)
he seems like the kinda guy who desperately wanted a pet lizard when he was younger but as he got older and his alchemax workload got larger, he decided against getting one out of fear he wouldn’t have time to tend to it
he uses emojis unironically
idk he’s just a silly loser nerd who does silly loser nerd things what a funny fella!!! yahoo
that’s all i got off the top of my head! but if you want more crazy spot thoughts you should check out my instagram story i literally. post every single thought that comes to mind relating to that guy over there (or follow me on @awesomesaucewizard i talk about him sometimes there too!)

Andrew’s takes on Nintendo changing the designs for their characters to be “Stereotypes” was honestly my favorite comic from his just due to how wrong it was
The DIC cartoons were never canon, and only allowed to be made cuz Nintendo had basically zero influence on its production, and so Brooklyn Mario wasn’t canon, and didn’t become canon until the new movie came out
Link’s hair, in every bit of promotional material and content from Nintendo themselves up to the release of Zelda 3, was always intended to be blond, as the NES has very limited colors (not to mention the reason they redesigned Link to look the way he does was so the player could put whatever gender they wanted on him), and I wonder if past Dobson and current Dobson would argue about Link being weirdly creepy in that cartoon
Princess Toadstool wasn’t changed to be less empowering by removing her popeye arms and wearing all pink, that was always her design, and she was always called Princess Peach in Japan, it’s just that they had to make it known that these were the canon designs cuz they were bringing new light to their characters
Dobson’s views on Samus in general are bad, he doesn’t understand that Samus needs an undersuit for the armor considering it can break off her and it’s better to have something agile and strong than be naked, along with her having green hair despite the fact that was, again, just the NES color limitations
And of course at the end, he did the funny sexist crap, it’s one of the first comics I ever saw from Dobson so I hold it above the rest cuz not only does it show how ignorant about the things he seems to care about, but even with his vast amount of internet connection at the time that most could only dream of due to how privileged he is, didn’t bother to do the slightest of research, like a foreshadowing comic of his future self
I think those comics are easily his most infamous ones. Even people who don’t know Dobson at all have probably seen them.

Fighter #11 - Captain Falcon
Tumblr media
- You know how some people name their weapons? Well, the gun strapped to his side is called Falcon. How original.
- Every time he smiles, everyone swears they can see his teeth sparkle.
- Captain Falcon is a big fan of Jurassic Park. He’s not too keen on Jurassic World, though. He feels that it just doesn’t have the same coolness as the older movies.
- If he ever decided to quit racing (which would definitely never happen), Cap definitely has the potential to become a pro swimmer. He’s strong, has perfect form, and looks very elegant in the water.
- This dude totally wears a speedo to the pool, and it’s simultaneously the most cursed and most awe-inspiring thing the fighters have ever seen. The veterans are used to it by now, as they’ve been around him for a while, but the newer fighters wish they could get their eyes bleached. And then there’s Bayonetta, who seductively eyes him up and down the whole time. Whether she’s just teasing or she actually feels attracted to him, nobody knows.
- No matter how many times he’s ridden the Blue Falcon, Cap never gets tired of doing donuts with it.
- He will happily take the kids for joyrides, as long as they agree to keep their seatbelts on and take proper precautions. Safety is Cap's number one priority, especially when it comes to the younger fighters.
- Speaking of which, he is amazing with kids. He always knows exactly how to hype them up and put smiles on their faces.
- Whether he’s at a race or in the middle of a fight, Cap will definitely show off in front of the audience. It's not a traditional Captain Falcon event if he doesn't wink or salute at least once.
- If there’s a bug in the mansion, he’s usually the first one asked to remove it. Usually, he doesn’t mind, but if he has to deal with a moth, it becomes a big issue. For whatever reason, Cap hates moths. One time, Wendy asked him to take a moth out of her room and he reluctantly agreed. Cap hilariously tried to guide the moth into a glass cup, trying not to show that he was scared of it. Unfortunately for him, the way his arms were hyper-extended while his head was tilted back as far as possible made it painfully obvious.
- Cap can’t handle spicy stuff very well and gets pretty bad stomach aches if he has anything with peppers in it. The hottest thing he can handle without having any problems is a dab of hot sauce—that’s it.
- For a guy who seems so lively and outgoing, he doesn’t really speak about his past. Only Mario knows the whole story, as he’s Cap’s most trusted friend. Bowser Jr. theorizes that he used to be a superhero that got kicked out of some super secret hero league.
- Falco originally thought that the Blue Falcon was a cool spaceship and wanted one just like it. When he found out it was actually meant for racing, that only made him want it even more.
- Cap is extremely helpful. Whether someone seeks good advice or just needs help opening the pickle jar, he’s the guy to turn to.
- The kids trust him a lot. He’s like a really cool father figure to them.
- He believes socks are criminally underrated and doesn’t understand why anyone would be sad about receiving them for a special occasion.
- He and Lucario often have intense sparring sessions. There’s no bad blood between them; they just enjoy giving it their all and they can trust each other with going full force. One time, their match got so heated that they crashed Peach, Daisy, and Zelda’s tea party, breaking the table and all of the cups with it. Enraged, the princesses forced them to clean up the mess.
- Cap will often join Ness and Snake when they watch baseball games. If his favorite team wins, he gets super excited (a little too excited, if you ask Snake).
- All of his racing trophies are put on display in his room.
- Due to his popularity, he frequently has to avoid paparazzi in his world. He doesn't mind it too much, but whenever he returns to Smash, he finds himself to be more relaxed because he knows they can’t follow him there.
- In the back of his mind, Cap worries that Blood Falcon is going to hunt him down at some point. He knows he can fight him off, but he doesn’t want anything bad to happen to any of the other fighters. If one of the kids got hurt because of him, he wouldn't be able to live with himself.
- When the Koopalings are bored, he'll play Duck Duck Goose with them. Hey, whatever distracts them from pulling pranks on the other fighters. As long as it keeps the peace, Cap doesn’t mind at all. In fact, he enjoys hanging out with the Koopalings and thinks they’re actually really sweet when they’re not being mischievous.
- The suit that he usually wears is actually the same one that he wore in his younger years; the color just faded from blue to indigo over time. Because it's his original suit, the one he wore during many exciting races in the past, it holds a lot of sentimental value. He hates the thought of getting rid of it and replacing it with a new one, but at the same time, he sort of misses the original blue color. To make him feel better, the fighters got him a new navy blue suit for his birthday, custom made to look just like the old one. That way, he could have the color he wanted without getting rid of his original suit. Cap was so touched by the heartfelt gesture that he genuinely started tearing up.
- He lets Wendy practice doing makeup on him, and he always looks like a pretty princess when she's done.
- Cap’s actually a really good artist. Lemmy asks him to draw stuff all the time.
- He tries his best to keep the kids away from Ridley, Ganondorf, Dark Samus, Sephiroth, Kazuya, King K. Rool, and Wolf because he thinks they’re all bad influences.
- However, Bowser, Meta Knight, and King Dedede are trusted individuals. He knows they aren't completely evil and believes it's not too late for them to turn their lives around (which, for the most part, they already have). Plus, Bowser is the Koopalings' father, and he's already proven that he's a good dad.
- Wario is a big 'if'. Sometimes, he seems trustworthy and fun to be around, but other times, he can be a big jerk. When Cap found out about the baseball card incident, he wouldn't let Wario talk to Ness for days. He always reminds the kids to be careful around Wario; if he asks for money, don't give it to him.
- Halloween is his favorite holiday, and he goes all out for it every year. Once, he went as the Grim Reaper and was nearly hit by three separate cars because it was pitch-black out and no one could see him.
- Flying-type Pokemon are his favorite, especially Talonflame. Talonflame is his buddy.
- He really wants to join the Mario Kart races but knows that the Blue Falcon would be too overpowered.
- If Doc needs a break, he’ll hold mitts for Little Mac.
- Ganondorf is his biggest rival. They can not be in the same room with each other for five seconds without making an unfriendly competition out of nothing. It’s really difficult for them to see eye-to-eye and they fight very frequently.
- Pit used to believe Cap was some sort of fiery falcon god that he’d never met before.
- In his younger years, before he got into racing, Cap considered joining a motorcycle gang. Hylia knows what that could've led to.
- His favorite song from the Smash soundtrack is Mute City [Wii U/3DS]. He, Ness, Lucas, and Villager always get into debates over which Mute City is the best one. Ness likes the original the most, Lucas argues that Melee is the best, and Villager prefers the Brawl version. However, no matter what anyone says, Cap will always stick with the Wii U/3DS version because it fills him with a rush of adrenaline that he can't get from any other song.

let's make one, shall we?
⬇ Click through to learn more about me than you want to! ⬇
Heya! So my name is Jenna.
I am a 3D animator for film and tv. I genuinely adore my job and think I get to make some pretty rad stuff! Once in a while you’ll see me sharing trailers and reels, or just talking about it in general.  You can check out my vfx work in my tag, or on my website.
I’ve been using tumblr since 2011, you are simply not getting rid of me no matter what dumb thing Staff does.
Fandoms
In that time, I have gone through several fandoms and have made so many memories in each one. People may remember when I was big into Supernatural, record-holder as my longest-lasting fandom, as many of us were. I may have since put that part of me in a nice little box with a nice little bow labeled “happy memories,” but I am still thankful to those who have stayed with me ever since.
I typically get extremely deep into a new fandom every few years. I apologize to people who don’t care to see it, I try to tag it all for your blocking needs! You can see my up-to-date current obsessions labeled in my blog bio! ☝
I am also a shameless, unrelenting shipper so block any of those tags that might bother you too. (I love imagining characters in love, what can I say)
Art Stuff
My drawings tag (all polished art, original and fanart mashed together.)
My doodles tag (non polished sketches, junk drawer of doodles. Things I deem unworthy of my drawing tag.)

I also love playing games and going to the movies. And I also love convention-going! I am not a serious cosplayer by any means, but I do enjoy trying to whip something up based on my current favorite characters.
I also have a passion for VR! I think it is an incredibly immersive and fun gaming & long-distance social experience. Sometimes I’ll post screenshots from my VRChat adventures!
I also love birds. Like, the animal. They’re so cute and I love trying to identify them. I like the idea of birdwatching but I am too casual to get up early and go to parks. I am an amateur birder if anything!
And I also love tattoos and plants and dinosaurs and penguins and getting high and science and really, really, really stupid memes.
I think thats it.

Happy New Year.
It was a pretty good year for my gaming hobby and being a Nintendo fan. As usual, I did spend a majority of the year just replaying games I loved, but there were a few new, and new-to-me games that I played this year.
Around this time last the year I was on a Rare kick, playing through all the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, DK64, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooie, and Conker. and Mark Kurko's Snowglow Village remake, and this spilled into January.
The Rare stuff also lead to a N64 kick in general, as I found a few decent Mario 64 hacks that worked on real hardware, and I also finished a run of Kirby 64 I started a few years ago and abandoned close to the end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I managed to make it through a short and easy but very charming Fievel Goes West platformer on SNES. I've got a lot of nostalgia for Fievel so, no regrets there.
I started going back and fourth between The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, and Banjo Kazooie - the Jiggies of Time, and it was interesting to visit areas of the game as Link only to come back to them as Banjo, this also marked the first time I ever replayed a full length romhack from start to finish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I picked up several Super Mario World romhacks. Some of them worked out, others didn't, either because of romhack difficulty or hardware incompatibility, but it really was kind of a Mario year for me.
Smash Remix got some amazing updates adding Marina, King Dedede, and Goemon, among other things. I can't wait to see where else that game goes. But speaking of Smash Bros, I also discovered the Akenia build for Super Smash Bros Melee, and I was thrilled to play that game with some characters that came later in the series like Lucas, Diddy Kong, Charizard, Sonic, and Wolf.
And I cleared two Gameboy games for the first time, Donkey Kong Land, and Final Fantasy Adventure, hopefully I can get to their sequels in 2024.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From there I marathonned a ton of Mario games... the SNES version of Super Mario RPG ( little did I know a Switch remake would get announced later this year ), New Super Mario Bros U, Mario Kart 8, which I managed to get 3 stars on every cup and every difficulty rating, Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros DS, and Super Mario Odyssey, all in preperation to hype myself up for the Super Mario Movie which, against all odds, was fun as hell and filled my little Mario fanboy heart with joy.
Also found mods for Wario Land and Donkey Kong Country returns that made both games far more enjoyable to me. Wario's default walking speed was increased, and Donkey Kong Country's motion controls were mapped to buttons.
Revisited Sonic Riders again, and sadly kind of realized it was not as good as I remembered, having only two grand prix that are largely copy pastes of each other with different lighting. Still prefer the concept of those games than sticking Sonic in a car though.
I discovered a pretty amazing Ocarina of Time hack called the Sealed Palace, which is a it obtuse, but still very good, and I really need to get back to it, I had nearly finished it but went on a hiatus when other things caught my attention. Will finish it in 2024 hopefully.
And one of the big highlights, I finally became the proud owner of an NES. My family had one as a child but it was more for my parents than for me. I mostly played NES games via Nintendo's re-releases or emulation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Among the games I played for NES, the whole Mario trilogy, Zelda, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, Final Fantasy 1, Dragon Quest 1, Metroid MOTHER, Kid Icarus, Super Mario Bros 3+, Mega Man 2, Kid Icarus, Duck Hunt, and I started up Final Fantasy 2, but have yet to finish it.
And in April I went to Super Nintendo Land. The experience was slightly soured for me but I had fun and got some cool merchandise. The actual ride was a little underwhelming though, and I didn't even get to go to the Toad Cafe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In anticipation for the Legend of Zelda, Tears of the Kingdom, I replayed Link's Awakening, and Breath of the Wild, had a great time with both of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then Tears of the Kingdom came along and completely absorbed my life for two months. I still miss playing it. Maybe i'll replay it sometime in 2024? It'll be interesting to see if my opinion changes at all, but so far, this one is in my top 3 Zelda games. It's not perfect, but honestly, mention any Zelda game to me and I can give you a laundry list of flaws for each of them, so a Zelda game not being perfect is old news. But it doesn't make them any less great. I think this one is just contentious because 1. it took 6 years, 2. purists of the old Ocarina Cone style of Zelda games are worried that they'll never enjoy Zelda again. They have my sympathies but honestly I don't ever want to go back to the old style of Zelda unless it's for a 2D game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I actually tried to give Skyward Sword another try, I bought the Switch version, but like with every attempt to replay that game since it's launch, I just find myself really irritated by all the exposition that I just quit playing early on.
Against my better judgement I bought Sonic Origins Plus on Steam, and it has some performance issues. I really didn't need it, I love that Amy is playable but I kind of prefer her Sonic Advance move set, which fans had already modded into the genesis games. I think i'd rather just get an actual Sega Genesis to play these games on someday.
I finished raising every single digimon on my Digimon Version 20th v-pet, which is essentially like completing the "pokedex" but for digimon. Sadly not every virtual pet tracks that information, so I won't get to attempt that again.
There was a double dose of Ninja Turtles with TMNT II the Arcade game for NES and Shredder's Revenge on the Switch, I think a certain movie came out around this time of year that put me into a Turtle frenzy because I also started watching the cartoon around that time of year.
I am not mentioning every little NES game or hack I play but I want to higlight two excellent Zelda hacks called the Legend of Banjo and the Legend of Super Mario, which are exaclty what they sound like, Zelda 1 but with a Banjo Kazooie and Super Mario makeover respectively, both are very well designed and arguably a lot more friendly to players that aren't experts at Zelda 1, and do a great job at selling the illusion that they're intended to be Mario and Banjo games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of my big regrets for the year was Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3, Slime Speedway, which I bought because 1. I was done with the Mario Kart DLC and wanted more racing game, and 2, I was on a nickelodeon kick and was hyped up from the pre-release of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2.
Slime Speedway is just not very well made. I am generally accepting of low FPS but two genres of games that shouldn't have them are racing games and fighting games. And it's very sad because I feel like NKR3 could be one of the better Mario Kart clones if it was better optimized and had less annoying sound clips... Nickelodeon All Star Brawl 2 was a good game but my hype deflated when I learned it would be cutting ELEVEN characters. Also the Switch version performs like ass but I really wanted to be able to take it to a friends house, so I didn't do the smart thing and buy it on Steam.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
October is usually when I do my month long Halloween celebration of only consuming spooky media. But Nintendo and Sega had the nerve to plan big Mario and Sonic releases that month, interrupting my plans. But I did manage to slip in some spooky gaming, with Luigi's Mansion, an Evil Dead hack of Wanpakku Grafitti: Splatterhouse, and a Super Mario World Halloween hack, as well as a Kirby Halloween romhack. There was also the promising Super Mario 64 hack - Super Mario and the Monstrous Manor, but it seemed to lose it's spooky flavoring half way through, so I put it on pause for now and will come back to it in 2024.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't need to say much about Super Mario Wonder. It was wonderful. Easily the best 2D Mario in decades. It can definitely stand toe-to-toe with the original NES trilogy and Super Mario World. But Sonic Super Stars on the other hand? It's fine, but the bosses suck ass, especially the final boss, who isn't even interesting since it's just the Sonic 3 and Knuckles final boss again but without the Doomsday Zone sequence.
Super Mario RPG came out in November and it was a delight. My second time playing the game that year, I never would have seen it coming in a million years, but i'm so happy that it did. I already want to replay it.
I was put into the mood for Square RPGs, something I always felt like I missed out on growing up. So I started up Final Fantasy IV, which I played before, but never finished. I need to get back to it but I am officially at the point where I stopped playing last time, about to storm some tower in the underworld while the red wings are being distracted by tanks.
In December I started feeling Donkey Kong again and played the first two DKC games, and a few levels of Tropical Freeze, I thought i'd finally try out that new Funky Mode. I then realized that I was playing the exact same games around this time of year last year. Pure coincidence, but I do kind of want to play the rest of the Rare platformers...
I bought my first ever Mario sports game in Mario Tennis Aces, and I had a blast with it, though the adventure mode was surprisingly difficult, I have also bought Kirby and the Forgotten Land but have not really dug into it much. I guess my appetite for Kirby isn't what it used to be, that and my mood lately has been mostly on Mario. Maybe I should finish Yoshi's Crafted World, I got that in 2022 and have not played it at all this year...
Mark Kurko did his annual Christmas Romhack for Banjo Kazooie. I played it on Christmas Eve, and on Christmas Day, I replayed all his past romhacks. I think I might make that a new tradition, to replay all the christmas BK hacks, and whatever else I have. I found a decent Mario 64 Christmas hack as well, though it's only a single level.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And to cap off the new year, I started up a run of Animal Crossing for the Gamecube. I've been at it for a week and a half now. I am curious to see how long I can keep it up. But I have already found two NES games, and I kind of want to see if I can get the whole set and build an NES arcade in my basement, just like old times.
There's not much for me to look forward to in 2024 as far as I know, just the Mario vs Donkey Kong and Paper Mario TTYD remakes really, as I'm not too interested in the Peach game. But I hope we get some exciting announcements. I just am not ready for that announcement to be a Switch 2, I'm so tired of buying new machines.

Note
Ragsy you asked for this
I need you to fill out the entirety of the questions for Dillion, Dogmark and Agent Hill also if you have her number you can post that too. (Sorry dogmark ur still my fave it’s just. Big lady….)
Was your OC influenced or inspired by any particular fictional character(s) when you made them? Dillion: Dillion is drawn from a lot of different sources of inspiration, but most notably he's sorta like if you put Prince Sidon (botw) and Zapp Brannigan (futurama) in a blender and gave the resulting abomination Laszlo Cravensworth's (wwdits) voice Dogmark: He's been around for so long that I can no longer directly trace anything about him back to any specific lineage. HOWEVER. I did find out very recently that he looks uncannily like the character in the musical Rent who is also bisexual and named Mark. That was a total coincidence Sloane: a lot of her design choices were "what would be very attractive to me personally" but i did take a lot of inspiration from Jasper (steven universe) and grizzled male spy action movie heroes.
What genre (not counting the one they’re in) would your OC thrive in? Dillion: sports anime Dogmark: romcom Sloane: stoner comedy
What genre would your OC do badly in but it would be hilarious or interesting to watch? Dillion: stoner comedy Dogmark: sports anime Sloane: romcom
What media does your character enjoy? (For characters in settings that aren’t modern Earth, could be media from their home setting or what they’d like in a modern Earth AU) Dillion: he'd be WAY into competition shows. chopped, ninja warrior, american idol, great british bakeoff, literally anything like that. Dogmark: video games! he's always been a big nintendo fanboy, but he hasn't had the means to pick up anything new in years. (he likes zelda & metroid the most) Sloane: melodrama. she doesn't really watch it though, she just enjoys having it on as background noise. but if anyone switches the channel, there will be hell to pay.
What song(s) do you associate with your OC? Dillion:
youtube
Dogmark:
youtube
Sloane:
youtube
(not necessarily for lyrical content, just vibes)
If your OC had to cosplay as a fictional character, who would they choose? Dillion: hunky magikarp Dogmark: botw-era Link Sloane: dean winchester
Has your OC ever had a crush on a fictional (to them) character? Dillion: if he did, he absolutely didn't recognize it for what it was at the time Dogmark: oh, several. the very first was both Elizabeth and Will from the pirates of the caribbean at the same time though Sloane: probably, but she will never, ever, ever share this information. ever.
How would your OC do in the last book/movie/tv show/game/etc. you read/watched/played? (the last game i played was minecraft) Dillion: he'd do pretty okay after the first few nights, but he would never be able to figure out cooking and starve to death Dogmark: he camps in the wilderness for fun all the time, so just fine actually! just going to completely ignore the horrors that keep crawling up from that ravine though!! Sloane: she's resourceful, so also pretty good. she'd get frustrated that none of the villages have anything to DRINK around here, but she'd get over it.
If your OC was a superhero, what would they be like? (powers, title, general vibe, etc.) Dillion: Captain Riptide: An ocean-themed Captain America type, with a bit of aquaman (water breathing, talks to fish) thrown in there. Basically just regular Sir Dillion, but with a secret identity. Dogmark: he's kinda already got everything already except the cool name ("What do you mean? 'Dogman' isn't cool????"), although he'd be less inclined towards vigilante heroics and more toward going on dangerous missions because the alternative is blackmail Sloane: she'd probably be one of those "mundane humans but is really good with a gun named Crackshot or Bullseye or something like that" type heroes, although her cursed monster arm would be a source of conflict that would probably lead her more toward antiheroism.
What animal would your OC have as their His Dark Materials daemon? Dillion: horse? probably horse Dogmark: hmm! hard to say! probably some four-legged carnivore? heavily steeped in symbolism of loyalty and servitude? what could that be??? Sloane: rattlesnake
What Pokémon would be on your OC’s team and/or what would be their preferred type? Dillion: w... water type Dogmark: normal type!!! normal! he's so normal!!! Sloane: ground type? maybe?
If your OC was a Dungeons and Dragons character, what would their class be? And/or: If they were playing D&D, what kind of character might they play? (these aren’t necessarily the same thing) Dillion: well. he's already a Fighter, and i think if he were playing dnd, he would also play fighter. fighters all the way down Dogmark: he'd be a ranger or sorcerer, but i think he would really enjoy playing a wizard or warlock Sloane: she'd be a rogue, fighter, or ranger, and i think she would think dnd is stupid so she'd never play
How well would your OC do in a standard slasher movie? Dillion: last to die, but he'd be, like, super guilty about it Dogmark: puts up a good fight, but ultimately no match for the jumpscares Sloane: goes down fighting in a last ditch effort to save the innocent bystanders. OR, alternatively, dies immediately due to her hubris and cocky attitude
What stock character would your OC be stuck as in a sitcom? Dillion: bumbling uncle Dogmark: awkward nerd who Just Can't Get a Girl! Sloane: token butch
Who would your OC main in Super Smash Bros? Dillion: CAPTAIN FALCON!! Dogmark: (copied from a previous ask) idk anything about the current roster, but probably Fire Emblem Sword Boy Du Jour? In melee/brawl he would be a Marth main though. Never played at any sort of competitive level, but he was still pretty good at it. Currently has a hard time holding game controllers on account of his claws and paw beans, especially the teeny tiny buttons on the switch Sloane: incineroar. she's a total shark about it too-- plays dumb for the first four stock, then as soon as she's down to one she opens up a can of whoopass on her opponent
Who would your OC play in Mario Kart? Dillion: inkling boy. [sighs wistfully] reminds him of home Dogmark: shy guy on a little bike Sloane: funky kong!!!!!!!
If your OC was in Star Trek’s Starfleet, what would be their role/position? Or, if that doesn’t really fit your OC: why would they get kicked out of Starfleet? (please take my answers with a grain of salt; i have an extremely casual surface level of understanding of how starfleet works) Dillion: listen, he's already partially based on a character who is partially based on bill shatner as jim kirk, so. he's the captain of this starship Dogmark: some mechanical maintenance role where he doesn't have to talk to anyone, or a security role where he's monitering cameras all day. don't put him in space adventure, he'll get sad Sloane: oh, head security officer. she'll wrestle with an alien lizard any chance she gets.
What role would your OC play in a heist story? Dillion: the muscle. he's not stealthy, he's not good at talking himself out of problems, but he IS good at bonking people in the head and/or breaking down doors. Dogmark: (copied from a previous ask) Getaway driver. He's too nervous to actually be part of the operation, but he's got a lead foot and he's a pretty solid driver. Plus, if they still end up getting caught, he can definitely outrun the cops on foot in dog form. Sloane: probably also the muscle, but in a scenario where she knows someone else is willing to put themselves in that level of danger, she'd be the overseer. planning moves, calling shots, keeping an eye on her team and guiding them to safety (and big money)
What kind of classic horror monster (vampire, werewolf, alien, etc.) would your OC be? Dillion: gillman. duh Dogmark: werewolf. duh Sloane: also werewolf, but hotter. duh
What type of Avatar The Last Airbender-type bender (or non-bender) would your OC be? Any bending specialties? Dillion: water!!!!! he's a fish man, what do you want from me!!!!!! Dogmark: (copied from a previous ask) Supposed non-bender for most of his life, but in reality just never had the opportunity to discover and hone his bending abilities. By the time he learned he was actually a bender the whole time, he'd aged out of most of the available training programs. Unsure what element though! Water maybe? (after the fact realization: probably fire actually) Sloane: non-bender, but she can definitely hold her own against a bender in a fight. probably practices chakra blocking like ty lee
Your OC gets isekai’d to a bog-standard fantasy world. What does your OC do and how badly does it go for that world? Dillion: "oh thank heavens, this is much more familiar to where i'm actually from than the other, much more creative fantasy world that i got isekai'd to right before this" Dogmark: he'd spend a week in terrified denial, then one day a gnome offers him a quarter-pint of thimbleberry ale and he throws his hands up in resignation, accepts the drink, and just learns to live with all the rest of it. his dogman curse ends up being a boon for him, it would definitely help him blend in at first Sloane: she'd spend a lot of time complaining about not having TV or cigarettes anymore (puppet shows and pipe smoke just isn't the same for her), but she'd be relieved that all of her worldly responsibilities and troubles just. vanished. (except for the cursed monster arm, but she'd probably find a cleric who could just. heal her for a day's work and everything's just peachy after that)
In the Muppet version of your story, is this particular OC a Muppet or the one human? Dillion: he's a muppet, but he's one of the full-body sized ones Dogmark: human in human form, but a muppet in dog form. when he transforms, he ducks behind a conveniently placed table and the other version jumps up in the previous version's place. Sloane: she's the human, and she never once acknowledges that her costars are made of felt and stuffing
What would be your OC’s My Little Pony cutie mark? Dillion: a really fancy medieval coat of arms with a nautilus and two crossed swords. way more detailed than any toy manufacturer could ever produce Dogmark: paw print. :) puppy Sloane: a revolver chamber, with one bullet missing.
Your OC is stuck in a musical episode. What song(s) do they sing? (And how thrilled or annoyed are they about being stuck in a musical?) Dillion: he gets the confused and excited "what the hell is happening, why are we singing" number, as well as being in the chorus for every subsequent number. he's a little pitchy, but he's so into it, so his spirit alone sells it. Dogmark: he gets the emotional "all is lost" number that happens on the transition between the second and third acts. it's his one and only musical number-- he spends the whole runtime up to that number denying that he's in a musical, but when his time comes, he owns it. Sloane: she manages to figure out how to game the system by simply not speaking the whole episode-- she communicates entirely by typing things on her phone and having TTS read them out for her. everyone else wishes she would just lighten up a little
In a murder mystery, what role would your OC play? (e.g. detective, sidekick, wacky suspect, rival investigator who gets in thew way, red herring, true culprit) Dillion: rival investigator who thinks he's extremely talented at solving mysteries, when in fact he's just jumping to conclusions and assuming he's correct Dogmark: suspect who is innocent but was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time and cannot articulate why without incriminating himself for something entirely unrelated Sloane: secret detective-- played along as just some innocent observer, but was actually clocking everything the whole time.
What is your OC’s Warrior Cats name? Dillion: splashstream Dogmark: bramblefur Sloane: tigerblaze
Gun to their head, what is your OC’s fursona? Dillion: coelacanth?? Dogmark: dog obviously, but like. that very specific kind of mutt you see with yellow single-coat fur, pointed ears, smooth tail, and no markings except for the odd white point here or there Sloane: GRAND! OLD! BOAR!!!!!
if you made it this far hi thanks i love you for loving my characters this much

As someone who got slightly noticed by the Zelda community for drawing Zelda x Ghibli fanart I have to say I don't think Zelda would fit Ghibli's standards.
I love tloz and I love ghibli movies probably with the same intensity and because of that I keep thinking that Ghibli is too serious and arsty for Zelda lol like, besides the aesthetics, there's nothing in tloz franchise that resemblance a Ghibli movie, Miyazaki and Takahata (may rest in peace) are well known for portray their views in politics and society through their films, Miyazaki loves to talk about anti capitalistic, anti war and pro environmental consciousness topics in his stories, while Takahata liked to explore the every day life of common people, the humanity in his characters and usually portrays deep, strong female characters going through a coming of age/growth journey (also had anti war messages with Grave of the Fireflies and fictional stories with The tale of princess Kaguya, both with a strong focusing in their main characters and their personal journey, with a very sad ending I must say)
On the other hand, despite Zelda's lore being a little confusing lol I like the overall construction of its universe but at the end the overall lesson of its stories is kinda bland, there's nothing wrong with a good old fashioned tale about the chosen one, good vs evil and the brave knight saving the princess, but it's like… pretty much all? I don't think Zelda's development team ever wanted to focus in go deeper than that, like questioning the role in the monarchy like with the clan Yiga there were just a bunch of losers being annoying in your traveling, they told you they rebelled against the Sheikahs and the royal family but why? Did they have a valid motive? There was nuance there that made you think "well… I get their point, I don't think their actions have justification but I understand where they come from"? Idk give me complexity!!! I want to reflex, I want to see not only a villain and a hero but complex people that make choices and make mistakes and you see the complexity of their decisions. The only moment similar to that in the history of Zelda that I can think of is in Wind Waker where Ganondorf told us why he want Hyrule, it was for his people, it was the wind that he coveted, THAT WAS DEPTH, THAT WAS AN ACTUAL CHARACTER WITH ACTUAL MOTIVATIONS, what he did was wrong, but you get to actually empathize with his feelings of just wanting a dignified life for his people, I can't think of any other moment like that in Zelda…
Sadly, I see how Nintendo is really focused on get the money (that's why they carefully chose to make a live action instead of an animated movie) so even if there was a slightly interest in Ghibli to make a Zelda movie Nintendo would have to let the creative direction entirely to Ghibli so Miyazaki would do the thing he knows how to do which is got slightly inspired by a story of other author and then just do whatever he wants with that, and of course Nintendo would never agree to do that.
Basically what I am trying to say is that a Ghibli x Zelda movie was a dream that it born dead

Sharing my love for Starfox 64 (originally titled Lylat Wars here in the UK) today.
Tumblr media
I played this game over and over in 1997 and loved it, but it’s only playing it again in 2023 on Switch that I’ve realised just how good it is.
N64 had a lot of great games but not many games from the early days of 3D have aged gracefully. Even Mario 64 and Zelda, two games I’d still consider some of the best ever made, are starting to feel a little clunky if we’re honest.
Starfox 64 feels fresh as a daisy, 26 years later. I don’t know how it’s possible, but it does.
The Switch’s button layout is less than ideal for N64 games, true. But ignoring that, the controls are so tight and so responsive, and so rewarding of skill. You can always make your ship duck and weave through laser crossfire exactly the way you want it to.
And you need to do so to stay alive on the tougher missions. It demands precision but in turn it always gives you full control. In an era where devs were still figuring out how 3D movement even works, it’s staggering that the game *handles* like it was released today, even though it looks dated.
There’s no auto-aim and while I’d normally call that a bad thing on a console shooter, this gels perfectly with the precise movement. You’re picking and placing your shots just like you’re constantly re-evaluating your position on screen. There’s a big risk and reward element as you weigh up the chance to take out a large formation of enemy ships vs putting yourself in the way of harm. And all of it feels intuitive. They still haven’t made a Starfox game that plays this well.
And the game is super replayable! It’s very short, clocking in at less than an hour, but that’s the point. You only play 7 out of 15 planets in any run, and each level can play out in vastly different ways depending on your performance, sending you on different routes of various levels of challenge.
There are 25 possible paths to the final boss - some are simple and let anyone pick up and learn the finer points of the game, while others offer crazy high scores but will test your skills to the limit. So that’s 25 hours to see everything the game has to offer, plus so much more time spent honing your skills for that high score, plus the incredible pick-up-and-play short session appeal of the whole thing…wonderful.
If you’re good you can protect your wingmates (they die easily) and in turn they’ll look out for you, leading you to hidden paths, warning you of ambushes and analysing boss tactics. Or you can let them get shot down and miss out on the extremely memeable dialogue. The story is corny as hell and full of classic sci-fi movie tropes and scenarios that are a delight to play through. You even fight an army of Gundams! At times, you really feel like you’re part of an epic movie space battle. I loved the old Star Wars Rogue Squadron series but even at its best, it never made me feel like that.
In short, I can’t believe in 2023 a game made in 1997 feels this good to play. It’s magic.

A short discussion of light and dark
Have you ever noticed how people seem to treat darker topics as the more "serious and adult" form of entertainment?
Because I do and it kinda bothers me.
Light, hopeful, whimsical stories seem often seem to be connected to children, while darker topics are regarded more mature and to a point that makes sense. Children don't see the bad things in the world as we adults do or at least we try to protect them from it. Stories written for them therefore don't delve too deep into topics that are considered too dark for them.
But the thing is: mature and dark are not the same thing. Serious and depressing are not the same. A story can be lighthearted and still be very serious.
Since I am a fantasy nerd I most often see this with fantasy stories. Be it games, movies or books. And I think it was my teenage years where I first noticed this phenomenon. If a story was darker, maybe bloodier, more deadly or dealt with mature themes like sex or abuse it was deemed better or more interesting by my peers. It wasn't that uncommon to hear critisism against a more lighthearted piece of media that boiled down to "it's unrealistic". And I think that is really nihilistic? The world isn't all sunshine and rainbows, no, but it is also not a horrible hell hole. Of course people who said this could have been just some teenage edgellrds who would eventually grow out of it, but here is the thing: some never did.
One piece of media I see this jappen to a lot is Legend of Zelda. While I haven't heard the critisism that it is unrealistic, I did hear people say that it is for children and then compare it to something more "mature" like Elden Ring or Dark Souls. Which is ... wild to me? Like yeah, both are fantasy games, but the target demographic is wildly different. At this point you are judging a game based of a colour palette.
"The old story of one hero defeating evil is so overdone and boring! It's so naive."
Yeah but it's also beautiful???
The hero that saves it all is a trope that lasted generations for a reason and while you can critisize aspects of it, it is simply fun. Maybe not to all, but to many who aren't always children.
I also hear that darker subjects are more thought provoking which I don't always disagree with, but I don't think the overall tone needs to be overly depressing for that. Lots of thoughts can also arive from how wonderful the world is.
I recently started watching Doctor Who and while yes, the show does have some really dark elements at times, I would consider it a very light hearted show. Because when I think of The Doctor I think of joy and wonder. I think about his laugh and his fascination with anything new he discovers. You could call his attitude to the universe almost childlike, with the biggest questions and thoughts raised not at how cruel the world is but at how wonderful it can be.
Another piece of media that manages to find a balance so wonderfully is Lord of the Rings. I don't think I have to explain anyone how beautiful those movies are, not in what you see, but what you feel. Lord of the Rings depicts a brutal war, people dieing, victories being bitter sweet. It is a journey full of hardships but also full of love. Love for your fellow soldiers, sworn brothers, for your people and land and the world in general.
"There is good in this world, Frodo."
And it is. The hope and the light are so wonderfully balanced with the dark ess and the death.
If anyone would have made the claim these movies would have been better if they were darker and the characters were more depressed due to the hardships they suffer, I would have called them a lunatic.
I've heard people say that they don't like reading YA fiction because it is too idealistic and prefer classic like Edgar Allen Poe like ... okay that can be a preference but the tone in which it is said sometimes suggested that they think it is "better" literature. And I don't like this elitism when it comes to fiction.
The cureent remake of Avatar - The last Airbender is another good example. Why did they try to make a show that is about war and genocide more mature and therefor darker, calling it something that would appeal to fans of Game of Thrones? Did they think it would be higher Art then? Or is it just because it was a cartoon which is for kids which is why it is less?
There is a similar thing going on in the shonen anime fandom. We all like to make fun of the "power or friendship" trope but people who call it cringe or unrealistic make me raise an eyebrow. The things I did for my friends that I couldn't have done without them is insane. I published a book and yeah it was a lot of hard work on my own but the only reason I could even get that far was because of the love and support of my friends. It's a real thing and if someone says it's unrealistic I just feel pity bc it just sounds like they didn't have very good friends growing up.
Light is wonderful. Joyful happy characters are inspiring. And I say that as an enjoyer of Angst. I like my stories to be dark and fucked up and pretty much every second character of mine deals with depression of some kind. But all of those dark moments couldn't work without light. If everything is depressing what should motivate my characters to fight?
There has to be good in this world. And fighting for it by overcoming the darkness is wonderful.
If there is only dark in a story I will not like it, just as much as I won't enjoy it if we sjy away from all of the darkness that could bother us. But neither of those sides speaks of maturity or quality and I wish some people would stop acting like it does.
Anyway, that was just me rambling. Find some light in your darkness, you deserve it. ✌

Tbh I'm pretty sure the average gamer believes in trickle-down economics
(this is in regards to the "I'm shocked more gamers aren't anti-capitalist" post)
Now I don't necessarily think that's true either. In fact, I'd say the reason the game industry is the way it is has nothing to do with economic politics. I'd say that the average gamer - or nerd in general, really - is a spineless coward who's too addicted to the dopamine hit to actually stand for anything if their wants ever clash with their purported morals. And I fucking hate it.
I'm not just saying that because I'm bitter, although you could make a case that I am bitter. But I even live under a rock and I got ample examples. Look at how well games we know are low quality, games made under unquestionably awful crunch and/or other awful situations, etc... look how well they sell! BDSP and ScarVio sold like hotcakes and they're unquestionably bad games for a $60 price tag. Starfield - which I have heard NOTHING good about, and looks like absolute trash - is apparently Bethesda's "biggest launch to date." Somehow that fuckass Cyberpunk game is still relevant. People are actually still playing Overwatch 2 despite ... everything. These are just games I pulled off the top of my head while I'm still waking up. The fact these games are KNOWN to be shitty hasn't stopped them from selling.
Sure, a lot of people made a big fuss about not playing Hogwarts: Antisemitism Adventures, but they were talking smack because they never cared about the game in the first place. So it was never challenging their morals. Oh, sure, they told us how even PIRATING the game was bad, and that anyone who bought it (or even talked about it) was helping put money in transphobes' and nazis' pockets. How quick their tune changed when they actually wanted to see the FNAF movie - suddenly, giving money to people known to max out donations to republicans ain't so bad. They knew the right answer was to not see the movie, but like, they really really want to! If you told any of these people you donated $30 grand to multiple republicans they'd probably, rightfully, have nothing to do with you. But they neeeeeeeded to see their blorbos or they'd die :'( so this time it's OK!
Same with the Mario movie. We know Chris Pratt is a rightwing chud who ousted a long-standing legendary voice actor for the spot because he was a recognizable name. We knew the Mario movie was a shameless cashgrab and a metaphorical foot-testing-the-water for uninspired video game cashgrab movies. And the test was a success. YEAH. PEOPLE STILL SAW IT. Enjoy Chris Pratt - who hates you for thinking Link is trans - playing Link in The Movie of Zelda, coming out in Q4 2024.
I know a lot of these are left-leaning examples, but this isn't exclusive to left side gamers. How many times have you seen someone upset because Shooter Game Whatever had just the sliiiightest touch of left-ish stances, they'd take to whatever to complain. But they still be playing the game too.
It goes beyond just games tho, nerd culture is all the same. Let's also talk about Nerd Protests. And how they're the most self-affirming, hollow bullshit.
Like two years ago, Twitch was having some problems. And I'm not referring to them literally breaking a woman's back live on camera, which they did do, and never helped her, and you totally forgot about, because human suffering is nothing in the face of dopamine. No, I'm talking about A Day Off Twitch, in which streamers were encouraged to take a day off of streaming as protest towards.... something. I don't remember. Seemed pretty important. Anyway, Twitch never even acknowledged the demands of the streamers. Like Adriana Chechik's broken back, they didn't do anything about it. And... there was never a second Day Off Twitch. There was abosolutely zero follow through. And nobody wanted to acknowledge it. Nobody did fucking anything. Instead of going "wow, they're not doing anything. We should CONTINUE TO PROTEST" you all patted yourself on the back after seeing one day of approximate revenue lost and went back to giving Jeffy Bezzolio cash by subbing to xXxvtuberfeetxXx or whatever. I literally never heard anything about this again.
And last year, reddit made some changes that people didn't like. An unignorable chunk of the site went dark to protest it. The CEO basically then said "eh, this change will make us money, and this protest will pass, so just wait it out." Like literally there was leaked memos saying "eh they'll get over it." AND HE WAS FUCKING RIGHT. Reddit was back to normal in like a fucking week. No changes made to their plans. And nobody went, "hey, fuckface, we're serious!" They just. Let it happen.
That's the thing. Gamers and nerds LOVE to talk a big talk until it inconveniences them. And then, they'll protest JUST ENOUGH to say that they tried. "Play the cards you been dealt" fuckin mentality. They were like "yeah I didn't watch Twitch during A Day Off Twitch, so I did my part! Oh, sure, nothing came of it, and then they literally had bodyguards manhandle a woman with a back broken in two places live on camera like two months later, but what else am I supposed to do?" as if not using twitch was not an option. as if using twitch was, in fact, an imperative.
And let's talk about Discord. you know, originally, for gamers. But now due to investments by social media moguls, it's worse than skype was. And be real, you know it's not gonna get better. Every two weeks they do something you all hate, and I have to hear about it. And again, Not using discord is never considered. Using discord is again, apparently, an imperative. When they made you guys change usernames - which I will actually go on record and say was not that big of a deal and that y'all majorly overreacted - it was such a prevalent, inescapable topic on social media you'd think they were literally committing war crimes. And since I've seen war crimes on social media recently, I can say that's literally an apt comparison. I see as much coverage about the IDF's crimes as I saw "DISCORD IS MAKING US CHANGE USERNAMES!" posts. And despite the fact you guys FLOODED them with feedback about how you didn't like it, they held fast and held steady. They knew it'd blow over eventually. AND IT DID. Within a month of the change y'all stopped making a fuss. Guess tellin your blorbo chat that you'd like to switch to Telegram (or Escargot, or a fourm, or IRC, or whatever) was more effort than just accepting the username change, huh? And now you've accepted ten or twelve other shitty things they've done since, eh?
And this all wraps up to my point nicely. Gamers/nerds have no spine, and regardless of what politics they say they believe - or perhaps genuinely believe they believe - push comes to shove they're going for instant gratification every time. Inconvenience is not to be tolerated, and wants are meant to be resolved in the easiest way possible (by giving in). The concept of taking a stand is LOVELY to them until it means actually standing up, because that requires minor personal sacrifices and gosh, we can't have that.
FRLG, HGSS, ORAS. Beautiful remakes. So when BDSP was announced - an ugly, 1:1 port with no added features, no additional mons (even including the ones introduced in BDSP's sister game PLA), made by a random software developer who had never made a game before, in unity, under severe crunch, for more money than the other remakes... I thought it was a slam dunk. We could finally tell TPCi to fuck off. Well, it sold about 15 million copies. At a $60 price tag, that means they made roughly $900 Million (roundable to a billion with a b) on what's unquestionably a shitty game. That one, personally, ruined my hopes for the game industry. Gamers will take whatever's given to them.
Games without the constraints of capitalism would be fantastic - but as long as capitalism exists, gamers will allow it to exist in the space. They don't have the spine to leave Discord - it's near sisyphean to expect them to control themselves enough to not enable the bad habits of companies.
... hmmm this took two hours to write due to an unfortunate crash but apparently I've had this essay fuckin loaded in my subconscious.

Scunkore Media "Thread" 2023: Part 4
Tumblr media
welcome back to the scrunko core
38) Miitopia (Switch, 2021)
Mii games are a dying breed, and honestly I'm not sure why they put this game on Switch when they did, but that's whatever really. It definitely has its fair share of improvements from the 3DS original, with a bit more content and an absolutely fantastic custom makeup tool that lets you make every Mii that much more unique, being put to great use by a whole bunch of creators. The game itself, though... it's still not anything special aside from that, and also its cute story bits and Mii interactions, but those get old well before you actually finish the game. And the game takes a while to get through, too, feeling very repetitive and grindy even while you constantly make progress. Basically, the game does some fun things, but it's not nearly enough to make the whole experience remain interesting throughout. It's just painfully average as an actual game, and I'd really rather have a new Tomodachi Life game, but that seems unlikely at this point. [2.5★]
39) The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Movie, 2023)
I'll never get over the reaction to the casting announcement for this movie, that was the funniest shit to come from that one Nintendo Direct presentation and unfortunately it might be more memorable than the actual movie itself. Chris Pratt Mario is the least of its issues (actually the voice acting is fine) - the plot and indeed most of the characters are pretty half-baked and it feels like they rushed the story through basic plot points between various action pieces, but at the very least that does mean it's never boring. Trouble is, that does mean I can't say the movie is good, despite the really nice-looking visuals and great soundtrack (when it's not using corporate-mandated licensed songs), both clearly made with a lot of love for the series. Sure, it was an entertaining movie, with some fun elements like Jack Black Bowser banging out the tunes, but realistically I think it's pretty average when I'm not giggling at the references - the critics were in fact correct, who knew. Still, does give me some hope for future Nintendo movies, because it was well-made. [3★]
40) The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch, 2023)
Breath of the Wild, one of the biggest and most popular games Nintendo has ever put out, finally got its sequel, and it somehow makes that game look like a demo. Everything new that they added results in Tears of the Kingdom blowing Breath of the Wild out of the water - the world map is about three times the size due to the added cave systems and whole new areas above and below Hyrule, the abilities Link gets to use are so much more complex and fun to use (especially the building mechanics), the enemies/bosses and side quests are more interesting, the list really does go on. It even has an excellent story that, while still unfortunately leaning back into "rescue the princess", delivers a really enjoyable narrative only marred by the fact that you can kind of ruin it by viewing it outside of the intended order, but I guess for an open-world game that's fine. I held off on writing this bit because I didn't really know what to say other than "game good", and now I don't want it to go on too long because I'll start rambling. The game is just really fucking good, man. Sometimes things in it are annoying, but I say that about every game, including Breath of the Wild - it may not be a particularly interesting opinion, but I think this game has just about perfected what it wants to be, and I have no idea what the Zelda team is going to do next. [5★]
41) Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast/PC, 1999/2011)
Next time someone tries to tell me that Sonic "had a rough transition to 3D" and it's clear they're talking about this game specifically, I think I might push them out of the nearest window, because that lie has gone on for far too long, though admittedly the ports of this thing have a couple unique issues and that's kinda why I modded the Steam port to be more in line with the Dreamcast version. But regardless, yes, this game is really good fun. It's a pretty unique 3D platformer with an excellent hub world and several different gameplay styles that each offer something fresh - from speeding through levels to fishing for a kind of annoying frog, I do rather like them all to varying degrees. The general vibes of the game as a whole (mainly down to the locales but also things like the incredible music) are pretty cool too, and the solidly enjoyable story - especially the parts with Gamma - is told in cutscenes that may look a bit awkward now but still have a lot of charm to them. Everything culminates in the classic final fight against Chaos, and that will always be really cool despite the actual gameplay of that fight being a bit of a pain. If you haven't played a "good" 3D Sonic game, open your heart up to this one - but do grab the mod loader if you're playing the Steam release. [4★]
42) Sonic Adventure 2 (Dreamcast/PC, 2001/2012)
The sequel to Sonic Adventure is kind of a few steps forward and a few steps back, and production-wise we know it was a bit rushed, which does explain some issues, but thankfully the subsequent ports ended up having less issues than the prior game's. Adventure 2 takes a hit in not having a cool hub world to explore and instead opting for typical menus separating the two routes that include most of the different level types introduced in the first game, and one of those level types (the emerald hunts) is designed so much worse this time around for god knows what reason. In fact, the game can be a bit more annoying to play in a lot of areas, although plenty of the time it's just because it's deliberately more challenging and not actual bad design. But it makes up for anything that might be worse than in the first game by having even cooler presentation, with a stronger storyline featuring everyone's favourite grumpy hedgehog Shadow and better cutscenes, more banger music, and going right up into space for the supersonic finale. So generally it's both better and worse than the first game, but hey, you live and learn. [4★]
43) Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit (PC, 2022)
With the upcoming Sonic Superstars set to feature Fang for the first time since the original Triple Trouple, now's as good a time as any to check out the stellar fan remake that turns it into an awesome 16-bit style game mechanically rather similar to Sonic 3, like the more traditional Sonic 4 that we never got. It's a lovingly crafted game that perfectly re-imagines the zones from the original with much cleaner graphics and refreshed music accurate to the hardware it's trying to replicate, and more spectacular setpieces that give it a whole new burst of character, plus it's full of its own fun original gimmicks and surprises too. A full run of the game getting all Chaos Emeralds and defeating the incredibly cool true final boss won't take you very long, but if you're a fan of the classic games you're bound to enjoy the ride and want to replay it with the unlockable characters too. Definitely a really cool fangame that's worth checking out. [4.5★]
44) Pokémon Infinite Fusion V5.X (PC, 2022)
It's the Pokémon fangame that got all the content creators posting YouTube shorts of the funny things they made in it, and of course, it's easy to see why a game with a fusion gimmick would have so much mass appeal - it's a massive undertaking from the people working on the thousands of different sprites required, and the idea of fusing Pokémon together has been popular for over a decade at this point. And that's a gimmick that the game handles really well, every battle presents you with some new cute combination or hybrid abomination and you never know what's coming up next, plus you'll always be mixing and matching with your own stuff to see what happens and if you can make something completely overpowered (I recommend Shedinja + Absol for maximum cheese). Though, I'm not that big on the core adventure itself, because it's just Kanto again with some Johto and the Sevii Islands tacked onto it, along with more Pokémon of course, and the new story elements are just kind of whatever unfortunately. It's also an RPG Maker game, so there's some jank to be seen, but I'm used to that considering the other things I've played. So all in all, it's hard carried by the fusion mechanic, but at least it manages to nail that, and it's still being updated constantly with new sprites to check out. [3.5★]
45) Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! (Switch, 2023)
I don't feel much for this game, so I'll keep it short. I've only really dabbled in Puzzle Bobble once or twice, and so I figured I'd give this one a whirl, but it wasn't that good all things considered. Sure, it gets the core gameplay right, as it should, and the online multiplayer works pretty well, but what I found pretty annoying was the story mode - a lot of the levels are just stupid and a pain in the ass, at least for me, so maybe I'm not a hardcore Bobble-head after all. The characters are rather annoying too, but maybe that's just in this entry, who knows? If there are better iterations of this series then I'd be down to play those as well, I just didn't like this one that much outside of dicking around with non-story mode content, which was decent enough. [2.5★]
46) Nimona (Movie, 2023)
The once-cancelled Blue Sky adaptation of a comic from ND Stevenson, showrunner of that very queer She-Ra series, actually got rescued by Annapurna and actually came out this year, and boy am I glad it did, not least because of how poorly animation tends to get treated by so many of the large corporations. The movie is an incredibly fun and deeply heartfelt story of people society was all too keen to paint as monsters because of an authoritarian regime, and it's definitely pretty clear about its messages in a way that pretty much anyone can understand. It's also quite well-animated and put together really nicely, and although I have heard that it goes for a more family-friendly angle than the original comic did, it still manages to get everything across effectively and hit the right emotional beats, and it uses its runtime as well as one could expect from it. Also, I gotta say, this one's also very queer - the two most important male characters in the story are gay and get to kiss on-screen which is awesome, and I definitely get gender vibes from the titular Nimona, the awesome transforming girl who gets the most action in the movie. Maybe it's a good thing someone other than Disney released it, because I'm not sure how keen they are about gay people and anti-establishment messaging (this isn't even really a joke unfortunately). But anyway, this movie was awesome, and I hope we do see more projects like it. [4.5★]
47) Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (Switch, 2023)
Ghost Trick has always been one of those really cool and unique DS puzzle games that people have been demanding everyone play for years, and in this case it's easy to see why that's all they were saying about it (in a good way). The story of this game is frankly too good to spoil, with some pretty great twists and turns that it takes, and I highly doubt anyone will be able to predict quite how it ends because that truly blindsided me and I loved it. The excellent cast of characters kind of helped with that too, especially the best boy of all time Missile; it's just very well-written as a whole. Now in terms of gameplay it's no slouch either, delivering some honestly genius puzzles revolving around setting up Rube Goldberg-esque series of movements with various objects that you, a ghost, can take control to prevent people from dying. Some of these puzzles are real head-scratchers, but I think anyone can get through them with enough trial and error, and it is immensely satisfying when you do, so it's a damn good puzzle game. Also worth mentioning, though it goes without saying if you've seen the game before, is that it has a really slick visual style with character designs that pop, and an excellent soundtrack that is very much welcome. Genuinely an incredible game, and I think they should let Shu Takumi do more original projects if this is what he can cook up. [5★]
48-49) Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack (Switch, 2017)
Had to check out some of Inti Creates' flagship titles when I saw they were doing a Love Live game in a similar style, and yeah, this is a fun type of game that feels inspired by certain Mega Man spinoffs. Both games in this pack have cool run-and-gun gameplay where you can "tag" enemies do deal more damage to them, and of course you kind of have to balance that with avoiding taking damage yourself. Not a problem in the levels themselves, but taking on bosses is where it can get super tricky, especially towards the end of the first game which is just way harder than the rest for some reason (so the first game does seem to require grinding for levels and equipment). So the core gamplay is something I quite like, but I'm not a fan of how it often presents the story as text boxes appearing during the action where you're not going to be paying attention to them because you're busy, and honestly I don't much care for the story and characters anyway (and honestly why are there so many little girls in these games, they even turn characters into them in the second one). I do also enjoy the little gimmick of having straight-up idol music playing at certain times when you're powered up, and the music is just kinda good in general, so there is that. Decently fun games overall, there's not that much left to say about them. [3.5★]
Finally, I'm done catching up on this, future entries will just have their own posts. Hope you enjoy these poorly-made stream-of-consciousness mini-reviews!
