IOTA Reviews: Derision

Well, here we are. This is the episode you've all been waiting for me to cover. The one people claim is the cream of the crop when it comes to badness, not just for the insane amount of retcons and cases of character assassination, but for how it retroactively makes one of the most criticized parts of the entire show worse by comparison. If you've seen the episode, you know what I'm talking about.

Let's get into the fourteenth episode of Miraculous Ladybug's fifth season: Derision

We start off with Marinette waking up for the day before getting a call from Adrien, who gives one of the clunkiest pieces of exposition I've ever heard on this show, and that's saying something.

Adrien: I was just going to tell you how excited I am that we're meeting at the swimming pool later, and to wake you up just in case you were still sleeping.

Just as she hangs up, Marinette's hands start to tremble, having visions of a locker, hinting at some old memories resurfacing. Just to get this out of the way, but one thing I want to give this episode props for is the way these panic attacks are portrayed. The colors change, the environments warp around, and it gives off a very uneasy feeling. It kind of reminds me of this one episode of The Twilight Zone, “Little Girl Lost”, which used similar visuals to depict the otherworldly atmosphere of another dimension.

Marinette meets up with Adrien at the local pool, and has another panic attack. Kim and Ondine seem to notice this.

Kim: Woah, Adrien. That must've been some prank you pulled to make Marinette freak out like that. What did you do to her?

Ondine: It's not funny, Kim! Can't you see Marinette's not okay?

Kim: Oh, come on. She always reacts like that when someone pranks her.

Kim then proceeds to tell Adrien and Ondine (and by extension, the audience) about what he means. I'm going to talk a lot about this, so to make things easier for all of us, I'll give you the short version so you have an idea of what happened.

About a year before the events of “Origins”, we see Chloe was bullying Marinette even more than she did before then, constantly pulling sadistic pranks Megan from Drake & Josh would find to be overkill, while making her late to class. To make things worse, none of her teachers believed her and took Chloe's side all the time, giving her detention on the weekends. Mylene, Rose, and Juleka try to help Marinette, but apparently, Chloe orders them to not talk with her before saying that “she'll be there to make Marinette's life a nightmare”.

The only person with the common sense to help out Marinette is Socqueline, that girl from “Jubiliation”. Socqueline learns that Marinette has a crush on Kim, who is even more of a jerk than he was during the first half of Season 1, and when Marinette thinks about asking him out to the swimming pool after school, Socqueline advises Marinette to be careful. Sabrina tips off Chloe to Marinette's plan, so Chloe goes to give Kim advice to pull a prank on Marinette. At the pool, just as Marinette confesses her feelings to Kim, Kim gives her a box full of spiders, causing her to panic and fall backwards into the pool. Chloe films the thing with the intent to make it go viral, but Socqueline stops her plan before she can upload it. Kim doesn't seem to see what he did was wrong, seeing it as a harmless joke as Socqueline tells him to piss off.

It's here that Marinette determines that if she ever has feelings for a boy ever again, she'll need to be super prepared, explaining how much she knows about Adrien and his schedule in later episodes. Chloe then gets Socqueline expelled from school just a few weeks before the end of the school year. Marinette blames herself for what happened, but Socqueline tells her that sometimes, no matter how dire the odds seem, she needs to muster up the courage to fight the good fight.

Oh, and Marinette was almost akumatized by Monarch again, but it's really just an excuse to keep her away while Kim tells the story.

So... let's talk about this flashback. Clocking in at about ten minutes, almost half of the episode's runtime, this is easily the part everyone (myself included) seems to have problems with, for all kinds of reasons. Let's break down each and everything wrong with this flashback.

#1: The Portrayal of Chloe

Surprisingly, this is the least of my problems. Compared to Kim (who I'll get to later), Chloe is mostly in character with how she's usually portrayed by this point in the series. She's egotistical, she orders Sabrina around, she hates Marinette, and throws her father's name around over and over again like it's a boomerang. My feelings on the wasted opportunities with her character aside, this does make sense seeing how this takes place before Season 1.

But there's the problem. This takes place before Season 1, and Chloe does things she never did in Season 1, or any of the other seasons for that matter. She clearly has the teachers and principal doing what she wants, she can boss the other students around (which I'll also get to later), she pulls sadistic practical jokes on Marinette, and even uses her dad's name to get Socqueline expelled. In the show, she doesn't really do any of this. Sure, she can occasionally use her dad's influence to get what she wants (Lady Wifi, Rogercop, Frightningale, Determination), but it was never to this extent. While she also tried to act like she was better than the rest of her peers, barring Sabrina, nobody ever listened to her or took her seriously. Chloe also tended to focus on bullying Marinette, but she didn't do these kinds of practical jokes. Usually, it was either sabotage (Mr. Pigeon, Despair Bear, Gabriel Agreste) or just general name calling, and she picked on other students too (Dark Cupid, Reflekta, Antibug, Sole Crusher, Penalteam, Deflagration).

The point I'm trying to make is why the hell did Chloe stop acting this way? What caused her to stop being as bad as she is here? I get the whole point of this episode is to show how terrible Chloe is, but you're showing off all her bad moments in a flashback and never considering the other things she's done that would be just as effective. Wasn't the main idea behind Chloe's “damnation arc” that she started to change, but went back on her ways and became worse than before? If that's the case, I have to reiterate, why was she even worse in this flashback?

I also have an issue with making the cause of all of Marinette's trauma because of this prank by Chloe. Yes, the prank was terrible, and trust me this isn't me once again going “GRR! CHLOE STAN ANGRY BECAUSE RICH GIRL IS EVIL IN FLASHBACK!”. It's more along the lines of “Really? We're really doing this?”. While I'm glad that after Chloe's betrayal at the end of Season 3, the show is finally considering the idea of making her more than just comic relief as a villain, it feels like a case of too little, too late.

After so many years of making Chloe out to be harmless unless she screams her daddy's name, now you're treating her like a serious threat who traumatized Marinette for life? Chloe is the cause of Marinette's trauma? This is like if the person who killed Bruce Wayne's parents turned out to be a joke character like Egghead or Crazy Quilt. Just because a serious villain does something important to the story, it doesn't automatically make their prior unfunny antics go away.

But my main gripe with the portrayal of Chloe here is that this flashback fails to do something that still hasn't been done in almost five seasons and eight years: Explain just why Chloe hates Marinette so much. Chloe is unusually cruel here, and doesn't even have a reason to torture Marinette like this. Usually, Marinette gets in the way of what she wants, but here? Marinette doesn't do anything to warrant this level of dedication. You would think for a flashback sequence focusing on her and Marinette's history, they would actually explain why Chloe likes to single out Marinette, but they don't. The writers would rather take time out of the episode to remind the audience of why Chloe is the way she is, and why it isn't acceptable, than clarify what Chloe's deal with Marinette is.

Rose: She’s this way because her mother left her when she was young.

Mylene: So did mine, and you don't see me having fun bullying Marinette.

Gee, I wonder if Astruc himself had a part in writing that exchange or not.

If you're willing to acknowledge previous episodes while also discussing how poorly Chloe treats Marinette, it would help if you finally did something to inform the audience about why Chloe likes to torture Marinette in the first place. Did Marinette show Chloe up at a fashion show? Did Marinette impress Chloe's dad one time? Did Marinette just spill coffee on Chloe's shoes? I will take literally anything, no matter how stupid the explanation is, over getting nothing after eight years.

It's also pretty rich that that scene was trying to say that what happened to Chloe doesn't justify her actions when not only do we never get a scene like that pointing out how creepy Marinette obsesing over Adrien was, but later in the episode, Marinette specifically pins all the blame on Chloe in one line.

Marinette: Adrien! I know what's wrong with me! It's not my fault, and it's not your fault, either! It's all Chloe's fault!

So remember kids, just because bad things happen to you, it doesn't excuse your unflattering actions... except when it does, and in that case, it's all the fault of the person who wronged you in the first place.

#2: The Portrayal of Kim

I'll admit, I'm not really the biggest fan of Kim as a character. I don't hate him, but it feels like after Season 2, he just became that guy who really loves to swim, where even characters like Max, Marc, and Nathaniel had more depth to them. This episode however? Yeah, I couldn't stand Kim here.

Just like with Chloe, Kim is sort of in character as the same eccentric dude who has a habit of being insensitive and accidentally upsetting people (Animan, Syren), and I need to emphasize the “sort of”. Just like Chloe, this goes against his characterization in Season 1, where he was shown to be a bully like Chloe was (Lady Wifi, Timetagger, Origins) before later episodes made him a nicer person. However, unlike Chloe, the show sort of tries to retcon Kim's rude behavior to be more in line with his Season 5 self by portraying him as more of a bully who simply isn't aware of how harmful his jokes are, but it doesn't work because of how cruel he seems, and he doesn't have the excuse of knowing how terrible he is like Chloe does.

There's also how easily he goes along with Chloe's prank when she literally insults him and Marinette to his face.

Chloe: I heard Marinette asked you to go with her to the swimming pool.

Kim: Yeah, we’re going swimming together. Cool! 'Cause I love to swim!

Chloe: That’s not why she asked you, dummy!

Kim: It's not? Then, what are we going to do? Chloe: She wants to declare her feelings for you! Kim: For me? But why?

Chloe: Probably because she's utterly ridiculous, and so are you, which makes you two perfect for each other!

Kim: Oh? You think so?

There's not being aware of how insensitive of how you are to others, and then there's not being able to comprehend basic insults. Chloe doesn't even try to give Kim a backhanded compliment or secretly insult him (“You really like swimming, don't you? Good thing you can swim better than you do in class.”). She just calls him a dummy, and Kim still falls for her trick. If you want to have Kim fall for Chloe's plan, don't make her so obviously cruel. For God's sake, you're making the class in the Lila episodes look smart by comparison.

And even after retelling the story, Kim still thinks Chloe highly, not only saying how pretty she is right in front of his girlfriend, but he still thinks the joke was the funniest thing ever. After five seasons, Kim of all people should know about how mean Chloe is, given he was literally kidnapped and brainwashed into serving her while she sided with Hawkmoth (Miracle Queen).

The worst part is that Kim has nothing to do with this story at all. You could literally replace him with any other guy, even a nameless background character with no lines, and nothing would change. Hell, I'd argue it'd be even better as having Marinette be embarrassed in front of some rando would highlight the impact it had on her self-esteem when she tries to go after someone of a higher social class. It would also better justify the spider prank if someone else pulled it because “Darkblade” established that Kim was afraid of spiders.

And if you think I'm talking about Kim after this part, believe me, there's more to this schmuck than meets the eye.

#3: The Way Everyone Just... Lets This All Happen

Look, I get what the episode is trying to go for, narratively, and realistically. Sometimes, teachers and other authority figures just don't do their jobs when someone gets bullied. Hell, I was bullied for years by someone who liked to take advantage of my anger issues, and it wasn't until my last year of middle school that the faculty finally decided to do something about it. I also get that this entire flashback wouldn't happen if the teachers realized how cruel Chloe was and got her expelled. What I don't get is how the flashback portrays anyone who was there as unwilling to do anything to help.

First off, Marinette claims that the reason none of the teachers believed her was because they're all too afraid to stand up to Chloe, since she can call her dad and cost them their jobs, but that's far from the truth. The only time we see anyone actually being afraid of Chloe was when Mr. Damocles went back on refusing to expel Socqueline before Chloe threatened to call her dad and get him fired. Other than that, while we only see Ms. Mendeleiev and Mr. Damocles in this flashback, neither of them really show any signs of being afraid of Chloe. They just go along with what she says, and they don't even try to take Marinette's side. Just like Kim, this would be more understandable if these were different characters who were never shown to be this cruel to Marinette in earlier episodes.

Second, while I can sort of buy the teachers not caring about Marinette, the fact that her classmates don't do anything is another story. We saw Mylene, Rose, and Juleka trying to help Marinette, but right after they talk to her, Chloe just orders them to go away, and it's never explained why. Marinette said the teachers were afraid of Chloe, but does that mean the students are too? Again, later episodes would establish nobody takes Chloe seriously as a bully, so this part of the flashback makes no sense. What changed to make them stop being afraid of Chloe anyway? Once again, if these were a bunch of nameless characters who were more apathetic to Marinette's situation, that would make sense, retroactively showing how much Marinette's friends care for her. Instead, it's like that scene in RWBY where the main characters watch a student being bullied by a racist classmate, and all they do is say “Wow, racism really sucks, huh? Anyway, not our problem.”

Third, you're telling me that Marinette came up with multiple excuses not to go to school even with a few weeks left in the year, and Marinette's parents didn't see anything weird about it? They didn't think that something must be making Marinette want to do anything but go to school? I don't think they were even informed about the situation at school, unless you want to be generous and say they knew Marinette got detention. You can't even make the excuse that it would work if these were different characters, but these are Marinette's parents. You know, the same characters the show portrays as loving and affectionate to their daughter? You're telling me they didn't even think to look into the situation, much less talk to Marinette about school?

The problem with all the other characters in this flashback is in order to make what happens possible, they have to be as apathetic as possible. There's being unaware of a situation or being too afraid to stand up (which is unfortunately something that happens when people bullied sometimes), and then there's just not caring about the bully victim at all. It's ironic how even though a big part of the flashback was to show how awful Chloe was, it unintentionally make everyone else in Marinette's life seem just as cruel to let her suffer like that.

But I know what you're thinking. “What about Socqueline? She was there to help Marinette, so why didn't you mention her?” Well...

#4: Where the Hell Has Socqueline Been All This Time?

Like I mentioned in my “Jubilation” review, Socqueline is yet another unnecessary addition to the already overcrowded cast of characters in this show, and it seemed like this episode was meant to justify her inclusion, but it only raised more questions.

Just to remind you, this flashback establishes that Marinette was constantly bullied by Chloe until a nice girl in glasses stood up for her, and inspired Marinette to be more confident.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

Yeah, this flashback is pretty much the same as Marinette's arc in “Origins” was, only with Socqueline in Alya's place. We get it, writers, Season 1 was good. Constantly repeating stuff like what happened in “Mr. Pigeon 72” isn't going to win you any favors.

This really highlights how pointless of a character Socqueline is, as despite supposedly being a really important person in Marinette's life, Marinette herself never thought to tell anyone about her, and judging from how Marinette described her to Tikki in “Jubilation”, I don't think she even stayed in contact with Socqueline after she was expelled. It's not like left Paris afterwards. All we know is that she went to another school and got a job at a local arts and crafts store, so why did Marinette just stop talking with her? Even with Felix and Zoe, they had the excuse of being in different countries, but you can't say that with Socqueline.

Also, this was something I just realized, but if Mr. Damocles got her expelled, why the hell did Socqueline treat him like he was any other customer at her job, much less compliment him as a principal?

#5: The Handling of Trauma in General, and How This Impacts Marinette as a Character

Like pretty much every other serious issue it tries to tackle, Miraculous Ladybug has always had a poor understanding of mental health. When it comes to portraying characters who struggle with some form of grief of trauma, like Adrien, Felix, Chloe, Zoe, and even Marinette, the responses usually amount to some variation of “Grow a pair and get over it, you big baby!”.

With Felix, Chloe, and Marinette, even if their actions are partially motivated as a response to either losing a loved one, trying to emulate their neglectful parent, or as a defense mechanism to avoid repeating an already traumatic experience, they're all proven to be in the wrong, and it's not to teach a lesson about alternative coping mechanisms or support systems. The show just says that they're automatically wrong for what they do, what causes them to act the way they do is never acknowledged, and instead, we're supposed to just act like they're being jerks for no reason. Compare this to Adrien and Zoe, who both had rough lives losing their mother at a young age or living with an abusive mother respectively, and rather than go into detail how it affected them or how they managed to become decent human beings in spite of it, the show just says that they're nice people, so people like Felix, Chloe, and Marinette have no reason to be mean to others.

This is honestly why I feel like this episode's depiction of mental health and dealing with trauma falls flat. In case you didn't know, I asked my followers who had to deal with some form of trauma to share their experiences and how it compared to what Marinette went through in the episode. For the most part, the common consensus seems to be that while the symptoms of Marinette's trauma and her reactions to it are very believable, a lot of it is contradicted by previous episodes, and it seems like it was only there to do a story about dealing with trauma.

So many episodes across Seasons 1 through 4 show Marinette dealing with Kim and Chloe without really any issue, and she showed no problem with starting relationships with Luka and Cat Noir, to say nothing about Nathaniel's brief crush on her in “The Evillustrator”. If Marinette was so traumatized by this prank, why did she want to go swimming in episodes like “Gorizilla” and “Mr. Pigeon 72”? Why did she bother to help Kim confess to Chloe in “Dark Cupid”? Why did she team up with Chloe to sabotage Kagami in “Animaestro”? Why did she suggest Chloe could change for the better throughout Seasons 2 and 3? Why did she continue to let Chloe and Kim use the Bee and Monkey Miraculous respectively, even after they got them from outside sources? This flashback is desperately trying to tie previous events of the series together together, but it only works if you ignore all the times Marinette has interacted with Kim and Chloe without having a panic attack.

Then there's how the flashback tries to connect this to Marinette memorizing all of Adrien's schedule to make sure he won't hurt her, an obvious attempt to rebuff one of the biggest criticisms of her as a character. Here's why it doesn't work.

First off, the setup doesn't work because while Marinette vows to do a better job getting to know the next person she falls in love with and how, in her words mind you, “He isn't friends with Chloe”. Putting aside the kindness he's shown her in “Origins”, she kind of failed to really consider her choice to pursue him if he stayed friends with Chloe if we're going to believe Chloe traumatized Marinette so much.

It also doesn't really explain the more predatory actions Marinette has taken whenever another girl tries to get close to Adrien (The Bubbler, Volpina, Animaestro, Oni-Chan, Heart Hunter), or how she tries to rig up situations to get closer to him (The Gamer, Gigantitan, Backwarder, Party Crasher, Felix, Psycomedian, Glaciator 2, Simpleman). And that's not even getting into how obsessive she is with him in other areas, like repeatedly playing a commercial he was in (Gorizilla), making a bunch of presents for him in advance (Christmaster), trying to kiss a wax statue of him (The Puppeteer 2), sniffing his pillow (Cat Blanc), or all the other times she's creepily obsessed over him.

But of course, you've probably noticed that I've forgotten to mention one key thing about what this flashback means: You know how Marinette tends to act nervously and stumbles a lot around Adrien when she isn't meticulously documenting his schedule? Yeah, they were essentially panic attacks brought on by her PTSD, and the episode tries to act like Kim did to her wasn't funny afterwards. Here's the problem with this.

YOU MADE MARINETTE'S TRAUMA YOUR PRIMARY SOURCE OF COMEDY FOR THE PAST FIVE FUCKING SEASONS!

You do NOT have the right to act like what happened to Marinette was bad when you were constantly playing her anxiety up for laughs for almost EIGHT YEARS at this point!

In addition to all the other examples I mentioned, we had episodes like “Psycomedian”, which confirmed that the same behavior that this episode is trying to say is connected to her trauma was hilarious to Adrien, as well as “Backwarder”, which thrived on playing up Marinette's anxiety towards Adrien and was said to be one of the funniest episodes of the show to work on by Astruc himself.

#6: Why This Flashback Is Ultimately Pointless

But above all, the biggest problem I have with this flashback is because of how pointless it is. It's trying to better go into detail about why Marinette acts the way she does around Adrien, but did we really need to do that?

This flashback doesn't really reveal anything that we didn't know already. We know Marinette was bullied by Chloe, we know she was a lot more meek and needed others to stand up for her, and we definitely know that we're not supposed to like Chloe. Adding to my earlier point, if we actually got more insight into the origin of Chloe's obsession with Marinette, that would have at least made this flashback important to watch, but once again, despite being a flashback episode, we learn nothing about the characters that we don't already know.

But this flashback is also meant to explain why Marinette is so hesitant to embrace her new relationship with Adrien when we already got a reason for that last season. The first half of the season has made a big deal about how much her feelings for Adrien cost her the Miraculous, so why not focus on that? This flashback just feels like it's here to give more Marinette angst instead of focusing on the things they've already established. And that's not even getting into what she saw during “Cat Blanc”.

Why couldn't we just have a story about Marinette's own insecurities causing her to doubt she can make her relationship with Adrien work, seeing how poorly things ended with Luka? Have her worry that something could go wrong as a result of her need to overcompensate, or worry that Adrien could betray her. That way, you could have Adrien supporting Marinette in a way that reflects their partnership as Cat Noir and Ladybug respectively.

But no. Instead we have this flashback that's taken me about ten pages to fully dissect. And the worst part is that I still have the rest of the episode to talk about. God help me...

So after Adrien and Ondine explain how this prank could have done a lot of damage to Marinette's psyche, Kim decides to find Marinette, and apologize for being so—Ah, I'm just messing with you guys. After all, that would actually make Kim likable. So what does he say instead?

Kim: Come on! Loosen up, you guys! It's like you can't even speak your mind these days.

Ondine: That doesn't give you permission to hurt other people!

Kim: Whatever! I'm the way I am and I'm fine that way! It's not my fault you guys have no sense of humor!

Yep, rather than having Kim realize the error of his ways and maybe be akumatized out of guilt, Kim just whines about how everyone else is just a humorless pansy these days. The writers pretty much made Kim's motivation boil down to “It's just a prank, bro!”. Even Monarch seems to go along with this, as he refers to Kim as “A free spirit feeling unjustly rejected”, when this was right after he called Chloe the prettiest girl in front of his own girlfriend's face. So Monarch sends his Akuma to Kim's goggles, akumatizing him into Dark Humor. Yes, that's really the name they're going with.

Dark Humor is a pretty forgettable recolor of Dark Cupid. Other than inverting the red and black color scheme and giving him a targeting scope on his right eye, there's not much else to say other than the incredibly on the nose name they gave him. His powers are sort of like Dark Cupid's, only now, instead of turning people heartless, they now share his soulless brand of “humor”. At least, I think it is. His Alliance power is the Monkey Miraculous's Uproar, but it's not really clarified if he's only using Uproar arrows or not, judging from the use of the rubber ducky that we've seen King Monkey use before.

Marinette and Adrien transform into Ladybug and Cat Noir respectively, but once they meet up, we get the most controversial part of the episode that isn't connected to the flashback scene: Cat Noir gives Dark Humor the beatdown of his life and is about to Cataclysm him, for pulling a bad prank on Marinette a year ago. Yeah, a lot of people have pointed out that Adrien felt a lot of remorse for Cataclysming Monarch earlier in this season, yet here, Cat Noir looks like someone told him that Kim just shot the Pope. For God's sake, writers, you're five seasons in! How hard is it to determine whether or not you want your hero to be okay with killing people or not?

And of course, this bites him in the ass, as Dark Humor stabs Cat Noir with an arrow, not only changing his Cataclysm into something that creates a bunch of balls from his hand, but also making him just as insane as the rest of Dark Humor's victims. You know, I'm this close to starting a “Remember Season 1” counter, because this is just glorified fanservice.

Ladybug tries to summon her Lucky Charm, but is stopped by Dark Humor, so Ladybug transforms back into Marinette, transforms into Ladybug again, and summons her Lucky Charm for real this time, getting... a toilet. Of course, the only way to combat Dark Humor's bad jokes is by using even worse jokes! Genius! Ladybug places the toilet over Dark Humor's head and breaks it along with the goggles, freeing the Akuma.

Ladybug de-evilizes the Akuma, uses Miraculous Ladybug to fix the damage, gives Kim a useless Magical Charm, and Cat Noir apologizes for murdering Kim by saying his emotions got the better of him, which is like saying OJ Simpson and his wife had a minor disagreement.

Kim apologizes to Marinette for traumatizing her, and I guess that's enough for Ondine to forgive him for saying another girl is prettier than her.

After Marinette sort of explains what happened to Adrien, he goes over to tell Chloe to apologize, and we get... this scene.

Adrien: I know about everything that you did to Marinette last year, Chloe. You're going to go and apologize to her and prove to everyone that you can change. I'm sure she'll forgive you.

Chloe: (laughs) Forgive me? What do I care about her forgiveness? I couldn't care less about Dupain-Cheng's feelings! She and the likes of her only exist to suffer for my entertainment. Why bother having power if you can’t use it against those who don’t have any? You’re the one who’s getting things wrong, with your baker girl! You’re a prince! You belong with me, the princess! You’re in this world to shine! To make fun of all the losers who are only good enough to be used as doormats!

Adrien: You're nothing like a princess, Chloe. I supported you. I gave you multiple chances to become a better person. Everyone reached out to you, including Ladybug and Cat Noir when they gave you the Miraculous of the Bee again. But all you ever think about is yourself.

Chloe: And what else IS there to think about? Losers and nobodies? The little bees? The planet?

Okay, first off, “She and the likes of her only exist to suffer for my entertainment.”? That's the line you're going with? She sounds like a dark lord in an RPG game. How is this the closest thing we ever get to an explanation to why Chloe hates Marinette so much?

Second, ignoring the fact that we already had Chloe end her friendship with Adrien last season (Queen Banana), it's pretty weird that this is the breaking point in their friendship. Adrien doesn't mention all the other times she's bullied people or when she sided with Hawkmoth even when he brought up her time as Queen Bee. He saw her being mean to so many people over five seasons, yet only when he learns Chloe did something to his girlfriend that he decides to finally confront her. If we at least got a line where Adrien acknowledged that he essentially enabled Chloe for so long by thinking she could change, that would have at least sort of worked. Instead, he makes it about how she refused to change herself. Dude, you had the chance to stand up to her for years, and you even did so in one episode before you went back on it (Despair Bear). You have nobody to blame but yourself.

Finally, Chloe is pretty out of character here. She's way too calm about ending her friendship with Adrien compared to what happened in “Despair Bear” and “Queen Banana”. You'd think if the writers wanted this to be a big moment of catharsis for the audience, Chloe would at least beg Adrien to stay a little. But no, Chloe brushes it off when it could easily justify her getting worse in later episodes, and even Adrien doesn't even consider how much he thought Chloe's friendship meant to him. Because these writers are dedicated to making sure that any identifiable trait Chloe once had is removed so you have no choice but to hate her.

But hey, at least the episode's over. What did I think of it?

Yeah, it wasn't very good.

I just... what else do you even want me to say here? I spent about ten pages going over why the flashback sequence doesn't work, I've already ranted about Cat Noir trying to kill someone with his Cataclysm in previous episodes (Hack-San, Jubilation), and I think you all know what my feelings on the portrayal of Chloe and Kim are.

I guess I can answer one question you may have: Is this episode worse than either “Penalteam” or “Queen Banana”? Eh, not really. Let me explain.

The problems with “Queen Banana” and “Penalteam” went beyond the treatment of Chloe with the way the stories were handled, with “Queen Banana” being a cheap jab at critics and TV executives while propping up their new character Zoe, and “Penalteam” being an excuse to have a soccer episode while making Cat Noir look like a buffoon right before the finale. Most of the problems with this episode have more to do with how they affect the way we see previous episodes, and why some scenes that were already unfunny are even less funny now.

With this episode, you can at least tell there was some effort being made to tell a more serious story here that went into what made Marinette tick. Yeah, it and the themes of mental health and trauma were handled about as gracefully as a ballet dancer trying to get a bear trap off their leg, but there's at least an attempt here.

Of course, this episode is still awful. The conflict with Kim not getting how much of a jerk he was after a year was dumb (as was him being even more of a jerk as Dark Humor), the fact that Marinette's trauma seemed to come and go when the plot needed it to really showed off how forced it is, and it only ends with you having more questions about Marinette and Chloe's rivalry rather than answering them.

While I'm still not a fan of this episode, and would still place it in my top five least favorites, I don't think it's the absolute worst. Although it's still the worst one so far this season from a technical standpoint.

THE BIGGEST IDIOT OF THE EPISODE IS...KIM

It says a lot when Cat Noir actually tried to murder someone in this episode, yet not only is he not even considered for the award this episode, the person he tried to kill ends up being the bigger idiot. Not only did he easily fall for Chloe's plan when she insulted him to his face, he failed to understand how it affected Marinette for a year, and when he was told about how bad it was, he refused to take responsibility for his actions, blamed it on other people not being able to take a joke, and only gave the smallest apology after he was almost killed for his attitude. It's honestly funny how he somehow comes across as more unlikable than Chloe, the character this episode was made to make you hate even more.

Similarly, he's very good about giving compliments specific to like, all of a person's inside stuff. The size of your organs, the shade of your blood, the prominence of your veins, the sturdiness of your bones... Medic tf2 is leaned over you on the vivisection table lovingly stroking your liver and cooing about how much he loves the color

This one's kind of a big one for me tbh... I think Medic tf2 would intentionally (consensually, temporarily) incapacitate someone so he gets to take care of them. Misery-style. My favorite version of this is Medic "accidentally" taking too much of someone's blood out during a blood draw, so they get all sleepy and he needs to feed them (with his boobs) and let them rest (on his boobs). Despite it all I think he really does like to feel needed.

I think Mommy Medic can be veryyyy... smothering. Figuratively and literally. He can really heap on the compliments, especially with a character who isn't very used to praise, which is its own kind of sadism. And he literally suffocates you in his boobs/thighs/ass/tummy/whatever. That one's a little less psychological.

Okayyyy goresex time... surgery makes Medic horny and he wants to fuck people's internal organs. Tf2 is really fun for this because the medigun is a built-in explanation for how he can do that while the other person is still awake. I don't know how into drinking blood normal humanguy Medic would be, but he definitely likes touching blood. Getting it all over his hands. Hey there, anon! Thank you so much for sending me this! I'd love to expand on my thoughts actually, since I'm pretty sure I haven't stumbled across any posts that delve into this headcanon about Vegas. However, before saying more, I'd like to give 2 important disclaimers: 1. I'm not ace, or at least I don't think I am (sexuality has been a fraught topic to me for the past couple of years, I try not to think about it), so everything I'm about to say should be taken with a grain of salt - as well as be corrected if I say sth stupid or inaccurate, 2. The "ace Vegas" headcanon isn't an original thought of mine. A former fandom friend had mentioned it once in a server I used to be a part of, and it intrigued me. Now, on to the topic at hand. Apologies in advance, because this ended up being super long: Vegas' sexuality and how he expresses it has been a very interesting topic to me due to how much emphasis is put on it throughout the show. From the way he flirts with Porsche (horribly) to the way his room is decorated or the way he dresses and acts, the man oozes sexual appeal, so much so that he rivals Kinn, aka the horniest man on planet Earth. But the more we get exposed to it, the more it makes me wonder: is Vegas really a "sex freak" or is he using it as a weapon to win against Kinn? Because if Vegas copies other things Kinn does in order to win against him - the suits, the boyfriends, the mafia tactics - why wouldn't he copy his (presumed) sex life? Why wouldn't he try spicing up his image as this scary sadist with the cuffs and the whips and the XL vegan condoms, in order to rival his cousin? Adding the ace aspect here, it could also be a way for him to cope with the fact that he hasn't experienced sexual attraction towards anyone in comparison to Kinn (because it is of vital importance to me that everything Vegas thinks about himself is because of Kinn). He can see how Kinn stares at the men he fucks, he can see the hunger; it's sth he lacks. He feels inferior to Kinn due to this, he feels like a freak - as he told Pete, I'll expand upon that line later - so, he overcompensates for it.... ...which brings me to the mirror scene. Yes, that mirror scene. I'd say it's one of two scenes that could discourage someone from having the "ace Vegas" headcanon, due to how Vegas is alone and fantasizes about Porsche while (I assume) touching himself, BUT I have two counter-arguments to that: 1. Vegas is so deep into this facade he's put on that he's trying to persuade himself to feel powerful for managing to incapacitate Porsche, even though he eventually failed to do what he had wanted to, 2. Vegas isn't fantasizing about Porsche himself, but rather the thing he did to him, the act. He managed for a little while to have the upper hand on him, and that power makes him feel good (aka horny). Is it a stretch? Maybe. Since a lot of fans love Vegas being a hardcore sadist who practices BDSM (something I'm in the minority of), perhaps ace Vegas doesn't sound believable - even though a LOT of ace people practice BDSM, as is known. Now, let's examine VegasPete in this context:

Vegas hadn't shown any interest to Pete pre-spying shenanigans, and even then, he mostly taunts the poor man. Condoms and ass grabs and merits, that's the most he does to Pete up until ep10, when he has him tied up in his basement and tortures him. I do love how most of the torturing he does to Pete is sexual or has sexual implications (RIP Pete's balls). It emphasizes how Vegas uses sex as a weapon to achieve his goals, whatever those may be - which, in Pete's case, are just him trying to redirect his intense anger from his failure onto someone else. Vegas knows how powerful sex is - it's why he used it to drive Pete's attention away from his issues after they buried the hedgehog and Pete told him he shouldn't hit himself. And being ace, he's more detached to it (by not being attracted to the person he's using his tactics against), so he's better at it. He excels at it, it gives him a perverted sense of self-confidence. Now, their NC scene is one of my favorites exactly because of what anon mentioned: Vegas reads so much as a service top in it. He is 100% focused on Pete and how good he's making him feel. His own orgasm can very well be considered an afterthought and it's perfect. With all of this, I can't help but see the possibility of him being ace. The last 2 things I want to mention are from the next scene, because they're also arguments that could be used against this headcanon: 1) "Do you know how sexy you are?" and 2) "I thought I was a freak, until now" Ok, so, a question: if we take into consideration the idea of Vegas being ace - a Vegas who compares himself to Kinn, a Vegas who uses sex as a tool, a Vegas who thinks of himself as an unlovable monster, a Vegas who hates himself to the point of being suicidal - then what's the most probable outcome of him having the first actual good sexual experience in his life? Answer: he'll get hella confused lol What I mean by this, is that Vegas didn't suddenly become allosexual from this experience with Pete. Vegas simply... fell in love. (or, more accurately, the feeling that had been building up inside him since the pill kiss cemented itself in his heart after they had sex) And what do some people do when they have a similar experience? They confuse romantic love with sexual attraction, thinking they experienced one thing when they did the other. That's what I believe happened with Vegas. He thought he's not a freak because he figured he's sexually attracted to Pete, when in reality the poor fucker loves Pete romantically. If we can accept the fact that Vegas knows shit all about proper BDSM practices (Pete isn't even looking that up lmao), then he sure af doesn't know about the differences between sexual and romantic attraction. Hence, what he told Pete. I think that's all I wanted to say, which is a lot already haha, but in order to properly expand upon this issue, I needed to write an essay of a post. Your mom yelled as you just stood in front of the closed door, glad that shirt was covering what Patrick had done.

"Mom- I'm fine. My friend asked if I wanted to stay over at her house and I agreed. We didn't do any drugs, I swear." You said as your mom sighed, then spoke up again. "Alright.. just, go get ready, we're going to go see some of your relatives today."

You nodded, running upstairs and getting in the shower, brushing your teeth, etc etc. You wonder how your now 'relationship' with Patrick, if you could even call it that, would play out in the future.

The fact that Alicent’s stans deluded themselves into thinking that she’s the reason Rhaenyra wasn’t beset by assassins in episode 9 and did something because she raised her voice to someone but the moment her father talked to Lord Westerling she remained in silence, it was his refusal that saved Rhaenyra, not Alicent.

And sending terms for Rhaenyra to deliver her toddler sons to live under Aegon II’s sadistic will as hostages is hardly defending Rhaenyra or doing any good to her, that’s fucking miserable, it’s insane how y’all believe that those terms were good, it’s awful on the show and on the book.

I get it now Alicent spent 10 years harassing and tormenting Rhaenyra and her underage children, openly saying she wanted her father there to take her side even tho she knew her wishes meant exile or even death to Rhaenyra because she was trying to influence the inevitable and protect Rhaenyra, true love 😍

Delusion--sometimes they are fun, harmless birds caressing us into safety, other times it's a steel band slowly starving us of or own intellect.

What really irks me are the damn terms being mischaracterized as harmless stipulations as if the greens (Alicent & Otto) are far more likely to be uncharitable to Rhaenyra's children than the reverse.

[Regardless of truebornness or illegitimacy, bc w/their regard for those not-illegitimate kids when they did live at the keep, they already showed they don't care all that much for how young and vulnerable and worthy of protection a child is; Daemon is more or less under rhaenyra's thumb and no I do not care about the choking scene bc no it is NOT even consistent with DaemonxRhaenyra--if they wanted to establish Daemon was abusive towards her, they should have shown scenes of him intimidating her or something in episodes 7-8! so I do not even think of this scene as HotD "canon" and you cannot convince me otherwise! just as I do not think Criston is Dornish in the show no matter what Alicent said or what he looked like--esp since if he was Dornish, it's far more likely he'd still look pale bc the northernest Dornish--the "stony" Dornish as Daeron I later calls them--are paler people who look your "typical" Westerosi..the Martells' looks are not ubiquitous in Dorne! Write better, and then I'll perhaps respect your storytelling.]

And while there are some sweet and rational rhaenicent shippers out there, the ship simply never made sense in the way that it was written in the show. Their development as close friends was never shown, and for how different they are, it needed to be shown! Especially with:

how Alicent really didn't seem to understand Rhaenyra as a person for her to act as she does in the Sept episode and attempting to reinforce "girls don't involve themselves with the politics of men" despite Rhaenyra being the freaking heir // while this is happening, Alicent visiting the king, with there being no sign of even hesitance , guilt, or desire to tell Rhaenyra about it--similar to how Criston should have known Rhaenyra would never leave with him and abandon her family or "duty" or the prospect of becoming the first queen of Westeros after years of everyone's doubt (2)

how she uses her queenly-stepmotherly authority over her (3)

how she continues this in her approach to her in that "queenly" way, accusing Rhaenyra PLUS the implication of her disapproving of her actions despite having to have known how Rhaenyra has felt Viserys has shunted her for most of her life....(4)

From the beginning, alicent has been too much of a ruler-follower to appeal to rhaenyra AND she has thought that for rhaenyra to be happy or at least content with her life, she must also conform to the obedient social rules of feminine conduct--ignoring any presence of inner conflict Rhaenyra has had or pondering over it.

A enemy kidnapped them and they faught back, BUT they were outnumbered leading to them having a big scratch on their back and it hurts so much. Similar to another post I made about you getting kidnapped, Donnie finds his tracking device and guns it back to the Turtle Tank with his brothers not far behind

Finding your Approximate location was easy, they ran into the building where the tracker said you were

There was six rival Clansmen guarding the front, but even 10 wouldn't be enough as they were Furious, it wasn't like them to kill their enemies quickly but out of sheer panic that's exactly what they did

They started searching the floors Until Raph shouted for them to come up to the 2nd floor

Donnie instantly got over to you yelling about how you could've been killed, as if you had a choice in the kidnapping

Leo picked you up and made a portal to the turtle tank "C'mon Hermanos, they've been through some shit today and those wounds are gonna get infected soon" he stated blankly, two of his three brothers grumbling.

Mikey on the other hand, Walked over to the Three knocked out Rival clansmen and pulled out a long, thick chain plus a padlock

Wrapping it around them and locking it tightly before examining the room

"You four go ahead, I'll have some fun with them~" he cheerfully said, but even a fool could hear the sadistic undertone.

Leo carried you off into the portal, Raph followed after, Donnie was about to cross the portal before Mikey called (more like yelled) out to him

Levi groans as you struggle against him as you unknowingly bring him closer and closer to his high with each twist and turn you make. Every scratch and bitemark you leave only get him off faster, Levi choosing to see it as you marking him as your own despite knowing you hate his guts.

Your eyes glaze over and your brain disassociates from your body as Levi greedily swallows your lips with his own, his tongue tangling with yours.

You didn't have the choice to disobey anymore.

You didn't fight back as he kissed you with increasing ferocity. You didn't fight back as he stripped you of your clothes or made love to you. You let him have his way.

I'll figure it out later, is what you chanted in your mind as Levi came inside of you for the umpteenth time, your vision bordering black as he continued to fuck you unconscious.

Ok, since you come respectful I'll answer respectful.

Getting this out of the way: I'm autistic. Object personification is a symptom of autism. It is something I have. This paper will be very sad if you don't read it. I will also be referring to people as "humans" throughout this to separate from my own concept of "people."

I'm an extremely low empathy autistic, plus some other things. While I'll see non-human things as people, I also don't really see humans as people. It's more like watching animals go about their natural behaviours. I'm an outsider looking in, taking notes on behaviour and interactions within the community. I don't think of humans as any different from the animals I observe and hunt. We're all just organisms. Humans are people with our own place in the food chain, try as we might to rise above it. There is me, a person. There is Misty, a person. Once I get to know another human well, they become a person to me instead of just another animal.

Only ones this doesn't apply to is kids. I'm horribly empathetic to kids. Teenagers are on thinner ice but still get empathy. But kids fuck me up hard. If something happens to a child I'll be fucked up for days.

This doesn't mean I go around being an arsehole, because I'm polite and learnt a long time ago and that no one will ever really understand my perspective on how I see other people. They'll call you a monster, a freak, a psychopath, etc. They'll think you want to harm humans, or that you're a bad person because you don't see other humans with the same personhood as you see yourself, or say you dehumanise humans. And I don't reckon I dehumanise humans, because all of humanity is like this to me. Additionally, while I'm low-empathy, I'm not a fucking sadist. I don't want anything to suffer. Shots I take on animals are clean and accurate--ethical and humane. I try to have the same approach with people. If someone is in distress, I am going to help them because that's the right thing to do. I might not personally care about the person, but I will help them because it's good to be kind. Sometimes that means I put up with a lot more shit than I should.

When I get close enough to someone, I start seeing them as people. Those in my server, my mates, my family. If I become emotionally attached to something, my empathy starts working and they become a person to me. But this also means that anything with sentimental value to me is now granted personhood. Misty is a person. My rifle, Winnie, is a person. My knife, Kaz, is a person. My stockwhip Stozza, my ute Matilda (though really, Matilda is the camper and not the rig itself). These are all people to me. They have emotions and feelings and this paper will be very sad if you don't read it.

And when something is granted personhood, I grant it a name. There's a reason everyone in my server--my friend group--is given a nickname by me, even if most of them don't know what I've given them. There's a reason my rifle and knife and car have names. There's a reason my dog has a name. People have names.

When I first got Winnie at twelve, she was just my gun. "Can I bring my gun?" No, Jet, we don't bring guns to Macca's. "I'll leave it in the car. I just wanna bring it." I didn't wanna let her out of my sight. She was my pride and joy, even then. And later that year, after I was assaulted, there was days I'd spend shooting tins out behind our caravan, and she was the only thing that made me feel like I had any power over my life. Because she felt powerful. She made me feel safe--like if ever I needed to, I could protect myself. She couldn't change what had happened to me, but so long as she was by my side I was sure it'd never happen to me again.

When I was fifteen and went bush, I brought her with me. .30-06 is fucking overkill for rabbits, but I shot a roo with her and the meat lasted me the whole near-three weeks I was out there until the coppers found me 60km from Ghan. She kept me alive, because I didn't bring enough food for three weeks. To be fair, leaving was an impulse decision and I was also 15 at the time, but still. Her dedication to me then was rewarded with her going from a gun to my most beloved companion, and being granted the name Winnie.

They took her when I was taken into custody, and I wouldn't talk to the detective until he assured me I'd get her back once I left the copshop. I went directly from the copshop into a mental facility, but she was there at the detective's house when he pulled me out of it.

By the time I was 17 and going to high school in rural California, I was in the school carpark when I noticed one of the boys at my school had a semi-auto shotty on the rack in his ute. So on the drive home I stopped by our local gunshop and immediately bought a gunrack for my back window, which is where Winnie rests now when she's not locked in her safe in Matilda or by the door.

Eventually Kaz went from "dad's knife" to "the KA-BAR", then back to "my knife" cuz KA-BAR is a mouthful, then finally to Kaz. By the time I'd bought my camper for my ute, I'd come to terms with sometimes people just Name Things when they get attached. And as I was 17, going on 18, and homeless at the time, I immediately named her Matilda.

When I became a stockman I wasn't given a station knife because I had Kaz and told them I didn't need one, but I was given my stockwhip and after it was used on me I finally gave it the name Stozza. And sometimes I take it out and crack it a couple times just so it's not sitting there coiled in a box at the bottom of my wardrobe.

The pronouns comes with the name territory. I just get a certain vibe off things, if that makes sense? Winnie is, without a doubt, feminine to me. Kaz is feminine to me. Stozza is masculine, but I usually find myself calling him an "it" instead of masculine pronouns because while I'm attached to it for sentimental reasons, it's not quite reached a level of personhood with me yet.

Murder Wives Ronance edition?

Robin being under the influence of Vecna and leading Nancy into a false sense of security so she falls under Vecna's influence and they become "evil" it actually more like Vecna brings their dark desires to the forefront of their personality while also planting some of his own twisted past times in their brains

Time line wise

-Trying to escape the Upside Down Robin decided to go ahead of Steve and Nancy in trying to get to Max (she's their child so)

-Vecna who's not dead sees this as an opportunity and attacks Robin, a very short fight later Vecna is gripping Robin's head up and doing the Teen Wolf claws in the back of the neck move which lets him place memories that aren't real and twists a few memories

-Steve finds Robin's beret on the ground and freaks out finding her a few feet away bloody and leaning against a tree, Nancy hears Steve screaming and doesn't know how to function when she sees Robin

-Steve carry's Robin out of the Upside Down before the gates split open (for the stake of the party I'm keeping Eddie alive and Max isn't in a coma)

-Dustin is in tears seeing Robin bloodied and unconscious in Steve's arms and has Eddie help him walk because Nancy has been in a state of shell shock since finding Robin

-Instead of 2 days it's more like 5 days after until Robin wakes up but it's like a switch flipped inside her, she's quite, aggressive, more sarcastic, rude, think flayed Billy but more calculated (she shoves Steve into a walk hard enough to crack the brick from the force)

-The AU where Robin does knife tricks to stim is very canon same thing with secretly buff Robin

-Robin has a vision like Billy had where he slammed Karen's head into the shelves but it's Robin taking a scalpel and killing doctors, nurses, families her friends everyone.

-Robin still acts like Robin though, she just has times were she doesn't act like herself (her personality doesn't change it's more she has a sadistic side to herself like an alter ego and the longer she has it the more the personality's blend that the party can't tell between the alter and Robin)

-Vecna attacks the group 4 weeks after Robin wakes up (the Upside Down has been bleeding into the normal world since the split but this was a focused attack)

-Robin and Nancy get split up from the group and this is when Robin hits Nancy over the head with a rock, Robin also licks Nancy's blood off of the rock (this will be explicit if the murder didn't cue you in, these two are some sadistic and masochist people which also means questionable kinks and smut, I won't go into detail but you can imagine. There also switches so everyone can be happy) Robin's all sadistic smirk and "I'm sorry princess, but you're too valuable for you to be against us. I wouldn't want you falling into Steve or Jonathan's arms while I'm away now would I?"

-Jealous and possessive Robin and Nancy?? Nancy killing Vickie after she's too flirty to Robin during an infiltration mission?? Robin beating up a guy after he gets handsy with Nancy?? Agressive make outs??? Wall pining??? Knife up to throat while kissing??? HOT AND COLD PLAY??? WAX??? okay I'll stop here but you get the idea

-Vecna also isn't very family friendly so there is torture, eating disorder, starvation, dissociation, questioning one's sanity, self harm, attempting suicide, night terrors and sexual assault

-Although Nancy and Robin are murdering and infiltrating government operations as their alters they are aware of everything and they are themselves whenever their not working for Vecna. So all the night terrors are delt with calm words and soft touches, any wounds are carefully cleaned and properly treated, reassuring touches, forehead kisses and just resting foreheads together, cuddles and just holding each other while they break apart and sure they like the pain, it makes sure that they are themselves (their alters have the feeling of pain shut off but it comes back once they are in control)

-Once Vecna is defeated and the fights with the party and the murder wives are finally over Robin and Nancy get so much therapy like their in their for 3 years minimum, the party forgives them seeing as the weren't in control of themselves and it's tearful and so soft

-The get a therapy dog for their PTSD and depression seeing as those two are the worst of their illnesses.

That's like the very very basic story outline

PS I was listening to Phonk music while writing this because their was traffic while I was on the bus back home so I would recommend listening to some while reading

Strangers From Hell Live Blogging

I usually stick to my planned shows in a planner order but randomly wanted to watch something dark, so landed here even though it wasn't on my To Watch List.

Do wanna do a proper live blogging, so think I'll only do my favourite parts or things that give me a strong reaction

SPOILERS! I also know some spoilers like Lee Dong Wook's character is a cannibal dentist? or something and also he kills our main character or the other way around, I didn't register the names

Ep 1 (Jan 19)

was afraid we'd get a whole lot about gambling for a sec. Hate gambling in shows so bad omg

bruh is that a real gun or fake wtf girl I'm scared the "crazy man" is boutta kill "the pervert" while playing

lol on the nose with the You know the best part about living here? Nobody cares if anybody here dies

okay it's a fake with play bullets or something ig

damn, Jongwoo fucked up that guy who was beating up someone else bc he got flashbacks to his time in the army

damn someone made a hole to peep into Jongwoo's room

oh the quip about the "he's not stuttering right now" was leading up to the fact that they're twins. i was wondering if mans was faking it

So far, quite unsettling and I'm liking it. Also fun that Jongwoo can't quite tell what's going on or what's happening but we the audience also can't always tell what's really happening vs what's Jongwoo's imagination or dream (like the pervert just continuously saying 'should i kill you?' which was also when the ganster guy found the play bullet thing in his room which was real but it lead to Jongwoo's bloody dream so was the pervert part real?)

Anyway, time to go to bed because it's 12AM and I have to get up in 7.5 hours and I can't handle scary or unsettling things later at night

Things we know that Jongwoo doesn't:

The Pervert is making a hole or cutting the floor or whatever upstairs (in the 4th floor where nobody lives?)

There's a hole in his room that someone can see through

The dentist mans who isn't even involved in the story yet is fucked up

Ep 2: Human Nature (Jan 20)

I hope we stay mostly at the creepy weirdo apartment instead of Jongwoo's freaking workplace bc that gives me more anxiety and stress than the murders or whatever's boutta happen in the apartments

Everyone at this fucking place just has terrible dreams of death and murder, huh? including the gangster. anyway he wants to move out so I'm assuming he's gonna die soon. not to mention he's fucking going to the women's floor that's supposed to be off-limits and empty but the pervert's out there digging the floor there anyway

what the fuck a dead body with blood, how long has the fucking body been there

oh damn one of the twins struck the gangster down?

I wonder whether the landlord knows about the killings and weird happening on the 4th floor or not. her talking about how after the gangster leaves, only good people will be left was sus and creepy

so one of the twins deposited the dead cat?

okay so that specific twin (giggling, stuttering) killed one cat but the others were scorched and burned, so either his other twin killed them or it was the dentist

Jongwoo's anger issues and uncontrolled outbursts is interesting because I originally thought he'd be very much the odd one out but he also has darkness in him (even if it's not cruel and sadistic like the other neighbors). like even though that was his imagination of standing up to the hyung boss man but when he beat up those guys in ep 1 was def an indication of what he's capable of

Okay so here's the thing right is the dentist and the "calm creepy" guy in the apartment the same guy? No? The dentist looks like Lee Dongwook (which he is) while the "calm" guy looks kinda like Lee Minho lmao. okay lmfao this whole time for some reason I thought the dentist and the smiley calm creepy guy were supposed to be the same person and kept getting confused that they literally didn't look alike and also was like why would a dentist be at that dingy place wtf but turns out they're unrelated. actually i guess the reason i thought they were the same was bc i knew the smiley guy was up to something weird and terrible for sure and thus thought he was the murderous creep dentist everybody kept talking about

That was hindi in the notebook of the old tenant guy? I saw a comment about how the old Pakistani tenant had a really sad backstory hmm

oh this lady is for sure in on the men making the tenants disappear

Also, I rewatched the dentist and police convo and he mentioned meeting Mr. Park the other dentist at volunteer work, so is he also gonna be involved?

lmfao the convo on the roof with "like it?" "i thought you and i could be the same type of person" is so gay like that's how people talk about homosexuality and that's how confessions sometimes start in BLs. except this time it's murder and horrifying torture!

kinda fun how casually the dentist strangles the smiley guy

Was the "I thought you and I might be the same type of person" just in the dentist's head? This show kinda reminds me of Midnight Motel in terms of showing the thoughts and scenarios in the characters' heads, though this is showing much darker scenarios and dreams generally

lmfao Jongwoo being so eager about crime fiction and writing about a murderer who kills the same way the dentist just killed lmfao so funny The Dentist falling in love with him or what and then Jongwoo being charmed by him due to the flattery oh silly man

oh my fucking bad, they talked about dealing with room 303 which is Jongwoo - he's supposed to be a replacement for 302 who was the creepy smiley guy

I hope there's a gifset of the parallels between everybody looking at smiling at Jongwoo and the pervert's altercation vs the gangster and the twins previously

brooo okay yknow I thought the thing with the dentist calling the twin stupid was so Jongwoo-lite, turns out it was Jongwoo

hmmm okay so idk I guesssss Jongwoo did kill the dentist, him and the cop seeing him around is just hallucinations and paranoia (including when he was alive and well and touching his adam's apple after all the murders bc Ji Eun saw that there was nobody else there), but Jongwoo now knows what it's like to kill someone and the "honey and i will be together forever" comment is meant to signify that Jongwoo is the dentist's masterpiece and the glitch at the end

Also, what happened to Jongwoo's friend - just an unmentioned casualty?

Here's why I think Moonjo is dead:

I think Jongwoo did kill Moonjo and afterwards came back to his room and had hallucinations with repeating sentences from their last conversation. The girlfriend saw nobody there and Jongwoo has previously had hallucinations in the mirror about the boss hyung's death like "It wasn't me!" Additionally, the scene was just his last words from the death scene + Adam's apple grab as seen before, so it was like Jongwoo's knowledge of what Moonjo would say or do, not really Moonjo

Everybody accepts that Moonjo is dead, so I'll assume they found the body tbh

I'll assume Jongwoo was hallucinating him after they got out of the building and I'll assume the cop was as well because she saw him in a crowded elevator and I feel like he would've been recognized since they family's been in the news now

There is a sense of "somebody's watching" the cop as she gets in the car at the end but to me, it's once again a manifestation of the cop's paranoia because we also get to see as if someone's watching from the backseat of her car and she turns back to find nobody there.

It's just more satisfying and scarier to me to assume that Moonjo's dead but he lives on in Jongwoo's personality and also Jongwoo and the cop's paranoia - he's haunting them and that's how Moonjo and Jongwoo will be together forever. He's a terror that is gone now but he's irrevocably tainted others, and made Jongwoo his masterpiece and final work of creation.

Overall Thoughts:

I'm not as blown away or enraptured by the ending as everybody else seems to be but I thought it was good and expected. The whole descent of Jongwoo was interesting to see, as well as how his environment and people around him made him who he is and what he had in him from previous experiences and by nature.

The acting and cinematography/atmosphere were good. I liked the hallucinations/dreams (I loved it when I couldn't tell whether he really was breaking the keyboard until the CCTV showed it or whether he was beating up the supervisor until the others came in bc he had violent imagined scenarios so often) and I'm glad it was just 10 eps.

I do like to think Moonjo's obsession was tinted with gayness but the cursory glance at tiktok/twitter shipper posts isn't giving me what I want - it's too ironically cutesy but I like that Moonjo is darkly obsessed and Jongwoo hates it so bad. I've been obsessed with going through people's archives for the strangers from hell tag and reblogging them though lol

I like that he's dead but still alive through Jongwoo; that even if he was killed, he still won.

I didn't ask him to tone it down. He asked me if I wanted to get hit at some point and I asked him whether he wanted to hit me. He said "well yeah but I'm asking you". I nodded. Later he asked me how hard he should hit me and I said "not that hard" because I was so close to crying. We were just cuddling and watching a movie and he started hitting me, then we continued to cuddle. I thought "he must really hate me".

We had a really great talk. He wondered how it felt to be choked and choked himself a little and said "wow, you like this? that's... beautiful :)" and idk we horsed around so much it was really a lot of fun. I also asked him not to hit me just like taht and he thanked me for telling him, saying he wondered whether it was ok for him to do so, he's the sweetest. Really :) I kept thinking about how he hurts me the entire time yesterday and I got the warmest feeling.

I asked him what kinda stuff he likes and he said he doesn't have that much experience either, and that he likes treating me like that. And that he didn't know how much he'd like it at first.

At the beginning, I was laying on the floor and he was chokign me. I passed out for half a second and it was the greatest feeling. I woke up super disoriented and didn't know anything about who or where I was and what we were doing. He said I was only gone for half a second. He asked me if it had scared me. I didn't want to freak him out so I didn't tell him how good I thought it felt. It felt like I had just gone to sleep and had had the wildest, most abstract dream. It really felt so good. I think I'll bring it up again and maybe he tries to make me unconcsious again :) it was so peaceful. It really felt like I was just going to sleep. The disorientation after waking up was fun as well, even if it didn't last long. I must've looked so stupid from up above. I also want him to be verbally demeaning. I want him to insult me and tell me I'm worthless. I think it'd hurt more than anything.

It's weird, I used to be so scared of sex and of being naked in front of other people. I'm not really scared of sex anymore. I'm scared of the pain but it's alr. He spanked me. I felt ashamed of my body. I will probably always feel ashamed of my body. I felt a little like a kid again. But mostly ashamed.

How could he not think I have the lowest self-esteem ever? He thinks he can separate my self-worth with how he treats me. It's not true. Those things don't come from nowhere. Just like he can only hit me because he hates me. I don't think I could hit him. I don't think I could choke him or spit on him. I love it when he calls me cute.

I can't stop thinking about the unconsciousness. I hope that's what it feels like to die. I hope I die while he chokes me. I mean I don't that must be terrifying to him but it'd feel so good and it'd make me so happy. I don't think I could tell him this. I think he'd be freaked out. I think he'd freak out if he knew more about my thoughts and how I hate myself and how I love/hate it when he shows me how he hates me. He said I might've been right when I assumed he was a sadist :) idk. I love him. I love it when he doesn't hurt me. I love thinking about how he hurt me. I love our conversations. I love how funny he is. I love how sweet and caring he is. I love it when I can see in his face how much force he's applying to me.

I love him.

When he calls me cute, I feel exactly the way I want to feel. I feel like a pathetic little piece of shit that somehow manages to look pretty/cute while being abused. I really hope he means it. I hope he really likes me. He texted me that he misses me last night. Gosh. All I want is to be held by him. No kissing no hitting just being held and feeling his breath, his warmth, his heartbeat. Never ever moving again. I just want to be held.

I love how we can't keep our hands off each other when in the same room. We have to have some sort of physical contact at all times. I love looking at him. He's so pretty. You wrap the cord of the hall pass around your wrist and slink out of English class. Kafka’s Metamorphosis could wait, but your bladder couldn’t. You double check the time on your phone. The hallways are dead; it should be safe now.

You peek around each corner before dashing to the next one. There isn’t any sign of him.

The buzz of the fluorescent lights heightens your anxiety. A bead of sweat tickles your back on its way down.

You make it to the last corner. A small, blue sign juts out from the wall a couple yards away. So close to relief.

A warm hand settles on your shoulder. It sends a shock through your system.

“Where do you think you’re going, freak?”

The hand on your shoulder develops a brutal grip and turns you around. In front of you is the scourge of your existence, Guido Mista.

“Um, nowhere. J-just back to class,” you lie.

Your bladder throbs in protest. You cross your thighs to alleviate the ache. It barely works. This can’t be fucking happening. It’s Mista’s lunch hour; he’s supposed to be off smoking weed behind the art room or railing someone in the back of his car.

Mista’s dark eyes scan you up and down. A slight quiver in your legs catches his attention. He looks behind you to see the glowing restroom sign.

He smirks.

“I’m gonna head back to class now–if you don’t mind.”

“Oh, I mind alright. What are you in such a hurry for?

Mista crowds you until your back hits a row of lockers. His arms cage you in. The lockers clatter. Your fist tightens around the sharp plastic of the hall pass.

His breath puffs hot onto your face enhancing your feeling of claustrophobia.

Your abdomen throbs in warning.

You don't have much time left; maybe if you left right now you could make it to the restrooms in the west wing.

His large hands move to push against your chest irritating the faded bruises on your nipples. One hand smooths down your torso settling over your swollen stomach.

"Could this have anything to do with it?" He smiles sadistically and presses down on your bladder.

You release an irrepressible whimper. A couple warm drops of liquid spill into your underwear.

Mista chuckles, "I guess I found my answer."

"Please, Mista. I gotta go. I-I don't have time to be your chewtoy right now."

Talking back was a risk, but it's not like you have a choice right now. You'll take the extra cigarette burns later.

It fucking hurts, and more piss dribbles out. You slam your legs shut to cut off the flow.

"Ha, you seriously just pissed yourself didn't you! So pathetic." he mocks.

Tears well up in the corners of your eyes. The pressure is just too much. Your legs start bouncing.

"I can't. Please, I'm not gonna make it."

Mista takes your jaw in his hand, "I know. You're gonna piss yourself like the worthless brat you are." He leans in and whispers, "For your own sake, you better make it quick."

You shiver.

Blood whirs in your ears as your heartrate rises. You clamp your eyes shut and grimace. Waves of pain wash over you. Every muscle in your body tenses in anticipation.

Please, please, please.

Your bladder finally gives out from exhaustion.

"No, no, no, no!" You whine. Tears roll down your face.

Hot piss streams into your pants. A dark spot grows near your crotch. The pungent smell of urine bites at your nose.

Mista shudders above you. His mouth is slightly agape. The hand under your waistband almost tenderly rubs at your tummy.

Once he's far enough away you lift your head up from the puddle. Your knees creak as you get up. You stagger over to the restroom.

An odd sense of calm permeates through you. The pressure is gone.

You wash up as much as you can in the tiny, cast iron sink. You leave the hall pass on top of the hand dryer.

There's a ratty pair of sweatpants and a gym t-shirt in the lost and found. Unfortunately there aren't any shoes.

You walk past the office, ignoring the secretary, and head home early. Every step makes a gross squelch.
