..you know what's weird?? When people make characters fat/chubby and then..put them in the most unflattering clothes, that distracts from the actual character design like 🤨
Take Catty and Iris from G3, them being fat isn't an issue at all, but the outfits ??? Those are so terrible and not flattering. Like why can't chubby girls have cute and flattering outfits like everyone else?? That isn't a cluttered mess of brightness or mushed designs.
Yall can't design better outfits tf??
I'm ALL for chubby characters but at least give them good outfits, let them shine like everyone else!! It just seems like they put less work into the bigger characters to me ://
(And before Tumblr forgets how to read. I'm annoyed at the lack of FASHION, not the body types. Don't act stupid.)

FFSU’s Fan Fashion Week!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*ETA: Works posted to AO3 can be tagged as "FFSU Fashion Week"!*
I’ve had the concept for this in my head for AGES but never got around to posting it. I originally planned to run it as an event during a certain time period, but I found that making it an event intimidated me out of actually making the idea happen. I just think that I’m a lot more confident in my ideas when I don’t overthink it! Therefore, instead of running an event, I’m just putting this challenge out into the atmosphere for people to take it and run with it.
REBLOGS GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Everything you need to know is in the graphics, and here’s a plain text version as well:
Fashion For Stand Users’ Fan Fashion Week Challenge: a 7-day art and/or fic-writing challenge!
Art Prompts:
- Day 1: Runway
Draw your chosen character(s) in an outfit from a designer runway! Check the blog archive or Vogue Runway for references and modify the look however you want.
-Day 2: Subculture
Draw your chosen character(s) in the fashion of a certain subculture: goth, raver, scene kid, etc.
-Day 3: Style Swap
Draw two or more characters swapping their canon outfits, or simply wearing outfits more suited for the other person's vibe and aesthetic.
-Day 4: Historical
Draw your chosen character(s) in the fashion of another era.
-Day 5: Redesign
Redesign, reinvent, or modify the canon outfit(s) of your chosen character(s).
-Day 6: Formal
Draw your chosen character(s) in gowns, tuxedos, and other fancy clothes.
-Day 7: Free Space
Draw any kind of outfit(s) you'd like for your chosen character(s)!
Writing Prompts:
- Day 1: Character Study
Write about why a character dresses or looks the way they do. Why do they like the clothes they wear? Do they wear something with personal significance? How do they want the world to see them?
-Day 2: Makeover
Write about a character getting a makeover from another. Are they getting new clothes, a new hairstyle, new makeup? Is it just for fun or a sign of a bigger change?
-Day 3: AU
Write about an alternate universe where the characters are models, fashion designers, hairstylists, makeup artists, etc.
-Day 4: Disaster
Write about something going horribly, horribly wrong: wardrobe malfunctions, makeup mishaps, over/underdressing, etc.
-Day 5: Shopping Trip
Write about characters going shopping together and all the shenanigans that ensue.
-Day 6: The Event
Write about a character getting ready for  or attending an upscale event. Who are they going with? What are they wearing? How are they feeling?
-Day 7: Free Space
Write about any scenario you'd like, as long as it's about clothing or fashion!
Rules:
Have Fun!
This is obviously a JJBA blog, but feel free to use this challenge for OCs and other fandoms! If you plan to modify the prompts, make different graphics, or make your own version of the challenge for a different fandom, be sure to credit this blog or link back to this post!
Mention @fashion4standusers in all your posts to give credit! You can also tag your posts with #ffsufashionweek, and if your work is about JoJo, I would love to share it on the blog. If you post outside of Tumblr, include a link to this post!
Don't think you can do it in a week? Want more time to write longer fics, make more detailed art, or just develop your idea more? No worries, just work at your own pace! The concept of the challenge is a reference to the various Fashion Weeks that happen around the world, but by no means is it restricted to any real time frame!
Only want to write or draw for a few of the prompts? Maybe only one? Wanna work out of order? Go ahead! This is a challenge of course, but if you just aren't connecting with some of the prompts, don't force it!
Feel free to use the ideas you come up with for this into more in-depth works!
It's never too early or too late to give it a shot, and I'll always keep an eye on tags and mentions for new additions!

So, MCD right? I'm working on some world build aspects that change the state of the redesigns I do. Here's kind of like the skeleton of my world building.
[Regions]
Different villages have different country inspiration, Regions are just continents.
Ru'aun - Werewolves/Dire Wolves, (European). A general melting pot of diversity, also where the best education is in the magick scholar/history/art way.
Tu'la - Asia Inspired (ALL parts of Asia in the different parts of Tu'la) . Felines, Foxes, Mythological Creatures (Asia). Deals with Ghosts, Monsters, Magick issues. Magick powerhouses
Gal'ruk - Chain of islands, Fish People, Fishing/Trading Powerhouse. (Polynesian Inspiried)
Pa'lotal - A mixture of Central and South America. (WE NEED THE INGREDIENTS FOR NON EUROCENTRIC FOODS.) South American mythology creatures exist. Plant people who can grow plants whenever on themselves or on the people.
Culinary powerhouse Also underground extracts like poisons.
Miyagi - Candyland. Any fashion goes, it's usually made out of candy esque spiel. Known for their magic foods/monsters/materials. (KC studied here for her Magick!).
(This was inspired by the exploding ice cream baker! Thought it'd be fun to have a region where everything was like this.)
Fu'kui - African continent based area. It has the advanced minerals/technology. They're filled with dwarves, halflings, rabbit people, other African mythology creatures.
Other species in Fu'kui include
Grootslang - Powerful cave snake with caves filled with diamonds. (Would have been a fun MC mob)
Impundulu - Lightning Bird (They can shapeshift into lightning birds)
Popobawa - Human by day, One eyed demon at night. The nightmare causer
Other species in Pa'lotal
Jarjacha
Maricoxi
Encantado
And, we ended up wanting to make a new relic. One based off the Lord who died and was generally forgotten, I think despite their naming the village their influence was genuinely lost. I figured it was such a waste for the name Phoenix Drop to be built up then have it fall flat with 0 payoff. It's still a WIP!
Phoenix Drop: An ancient relic that allows you to reverse damages to a target so it's back in it's prime. Once used, it disappears for 100 years unless the user bonds with it. Once bonded, the user gains a pair of wings/feathers that allow you to replicate the properties. Generally, when bonded misfortune befalls the user as people tend to hunt them down for their winged properties.

Another redesign done, took me a week to figure hers out. I wanted to make her non-japanese in her human life, because all the other moth spirits currently are....purely because I really didn't want to change their names lol, but Mari was a different case.
I honestly like her new design more than the old one, not that the old one was bad.
more info below:
Name: Marisa Marisol-Raye
Nicknames: Risa/Mari-junior/junior (her moms) firecracker/hun/Mari (Gianna)
Age: 21
Height: 155 cm
Friends: She does like hanging out with her GF's brother and his friends as sort of a "big sis" figure. She's also made friends with Max Karuna, a member of a popular rock band, as Marisa has helped working on their stage shows.
Family: adoptive moms Marci Raye and Mariella Marisol
Love interest: Gianna Aquila, a young designer student in the same uni (A siren)
TREE LORE
Moth spirits are human souls reborn in new form through what is called a Hive Tree. There used to be 7 of those, but after the Ancient War only 3 are left. Each tree attracts slightly different types of souls with unfinished business:
Amethyst Wisteria:  A purple tree which reminds a massive Wisteria tree in appearance, the spirits manifested by this one are typically those who were in some way significant people in their community, dying unexpectedly. Leaders, warriors, freedom fighters, etc.
Emerald Weeping Willow: A green tree similar in likeness to Weeping Willows, only again much more massive. Souls born from this tree were those with tragic, darker sudden deaths. These souls were typically killed by someone in a non-war setting (I.E victims of crime) or they died of self-inflicted injuries caused by mental distress of some sort.
Blue Lapiz Spruce: A large tree in likeness of blue spruce. The souls that this tree attracts are typically those who died in a freak accident or natural disasters. This tree tends to birth a lot of child moth spirits, given it is more likely for a child to die of a freak accident/natural disaster than be of a level of importance/die due to crime. (Marisa naturally came from this tree)
Powers:
Moth Spirit abilities: Speedy flight, butterfly poofing like a vampire, spitting webbing, fireproof wings, pocket dimension to store stuff in, de-manifesting her wings if needed.
Fire protection spell: While her wings are fireproof, she needs more, well, proofing than that, and has learned spells to coat her whole body and/or her tools to prevent them from being damaged by potential fires from her work.
Engineering Intelligence: She is studying for an engineer for a reason; Marisa has always been good at learning new things and understanding the fundamentals of how things work, both on the magical side and the physical side.
Weaknesses:
Marisa can be a tad reckless and push the boundary of what might be the smart approach to her tinkering, resulting in explosions and unnecessary messes.
She is socially a little awkward and doesn't always know how to act in crowds, which often means she'll just tag along her girlfriend during any bigger celebratory events, unless she finds people who are more her vibe, typically those who are up to shenanigans.
Marisa has a fear of the ocean and doesn't like being in large bodies of water; when younger it was even difficult to get her to bathe at first, but by now its only large bodies of water that bother her.
Personality:
Marisa is very positive and enthusiastic person with never-ending curiosity. She loves trying out new things and testing her hypothesis, whenever it is about her inventions or whenever a flavor combo for food works or not.
While you wouldn't think of it at first glance, Marisa absolutely loves fashion too and enjoys trying out all sorts of different looks and outfits, the only real rule that she follows being "colorful" pretty much.
Due to her social awkwardness, she is sometimes self conscious and wonders if she's being too much, apologizing a lot if she feels she's talking too much for example. She also tends to want to avoid big gatherings of people, unless she gets to actually work with something. Marisa also has the tendency to dwell in any awkward conversations she's had with people for days.
FUN FACTS
She was taken in by Marci, who happened to be visiting the Blue Spruce area given she is acquainted with the wife of one of the guardians of the tree. She came to stay there for a while to try and recover from a traumatic incident that led her quitting her earlier dangerous job.
At first she felt hesitant adopting the kid, but during her stay it became clear Marisa had already chosen her as her new parent, so she decided to at least try.
They met Mariella two years later, and Marisa "shipped" them from the start, as she could tell instantly the two liked each other, and Marisa liked Mariella.
Marisa was from Mexico when she was a human, and died due to drowning at sea, potentially because she accidentally fell off a boat during a storm. (had there been any foul play, she would've been born a green moth)
Her name meaning "of the sea" refers to her manner of death as is typical for Moth spirits.
She likely died somewhere in the 60:ies
Out of the other moth spirits, she's only met Yoruga personally, given she does go to the cafe sometimes with her moms that he works at.
Marisa is Bi
Because of her thick fluff around her legs, she doesn't need to wear long trousers or leg warmers during winter, still sporting shorts or skirts, just of thicker fabric.
her hair is very epic poofy pile of curls when fully open, making her the fluffiest of all 4 moths in the story.

I need to ramble about my cardverse AU. I was daydreaming about it alot while "redesigning" Arthur's Queen of Spades outfit 🤲 I might actually draw cardverse or expand on this because I have so many things to explain about
Spades
This kingdom is known for many things: fashion, pollution, modernism, technology, clocks and their obsession with lions but the most famous would be the royalty. Arthur III, while he has never been crowned unlike King Alfred, is the first ever Queen to have power over a kingdom (especially while there's a king) as kings are the only ones who can rule. He has terrorized politicians, own white lions as pets, psychologically torture/execute people, wearing black lipstick (this is something relevent with the Hearts Kingdom) and having more power than the King. Though it's a kingdom known for fashion, it also has strict laws over what's reserved only for royalty or such as lion fur/skin (the wealthy are an exception) and the colour purple, which dates back to Roman times, though recently, the colour purple has been seen on products and companies if it has been officially favoured by the Queen Arthur III. So if you visit the Spades Kingdom, don't wear any purple or lion. (Idk where to add this so I'm adding it at the end but this is just some fun fact that I love and want to talk about more: were no records of any other royalty nor relative named Arthur even though he's titled as the third Arthur to be royalty. He added it himself. because 3 is his favourite number 💀. He would execute one politician - either for dinner or to import to the Diamonds Kingdom - for every day the government wouldn't make him the third Arthur and ofc by the 8th day they were getting understaffed from this so in the end, they allowed him to be titled Queen Arthur III.... He is so petty and a menance but it's something that would likely happen lmfao).
Hearts
Though, their royalty was never as known as the Spades, it is well very known for their aesthetics, music, art, romance, history and sports. Many of their architecture hasn't been modified since the renaissance era and in some areas, even the attire hadn't changed. The Hearts are very particular on makeup and attire so , they even have not-so-secret unspoken lipstick code which may not be as relevant to the common people anymore, it is more important on royalty. Many artists, writers and historians go there to make a living while others may go there for romance or the pretty architecture as many romance stories are set in Hearts. The Prince, Feliciano, is labelled as 'the face of Hearts' by Heartians but internationally as a romantic icon (sometimes a sexual icon but idk I think that would be King Francis IV). The Spades are fond of Feliciano for embracing modernism and doing things that would be frown upon for Heartian royalty like not abiding to the lipstick code (but thats okay for him to break the rules because he's the favourite out of the Heartian royals).
Clubs
Many people would think the Clubs Kingdom would be filled with greenery and nature by their symbol of a three-leafed clover but in reality it is a very snowy. The reason behind the clover may be from an old Cluban folktale or their obsession with luck and magic. The Clubs are famous for their competitiveness, tourism, and their strong belief in luck and magic despite having the most science labs/schools in the world. The King, Ivan the First , is always seen shirtless and smiling - a standard for Cluban royalty to show their health, luck and strength against harsh snow weathers.
Diamonds
Being known for their wealth, they are known for their films/theatres, mining sites, heavy surveillance, vast greenery, prestigious schools and famous cuisine. It is a kingdom many people go to for either their wealth or education meaning you'll find alot of aspiring actors, cooks and archeologists studying here (and rich snobs, though, you'll find those kind of people up north). They have plenty of famous cuisines that originated there that enjoyed around the world like Ligone Fries and Burgers, but they have their fair share of really questionable dishes like: shepherd-dog pie, human steak and cub stew (they are not as common nowadays, but there are no laws on what you can't eat in the Diamond Kingdom so you can eat these). The King - Francis IV - is always either oversees, or in small villages talking to locals. The Diamonds are stereotyped as very snobby, paranoid poshos, but in reality they are really laid back and hospitable.
Jokers
The Jokers are forbidden land that hadn't been "claimed" by any of the kingdoms. They either prank or hunt down people who are seen as threats to the land and therefore are depicted as savage barbarians. Not much is known about them and are usually either villains or silly goofy pranksters in many stories. The information known about them has been rumored to be destroyed and possibly also forgotten by Kingdoms.

Tips for Improving your Web Design
Today website is a great tool to thrive and exist in the market. Whatever may be your business, the best marketing strategy for promoting your products is going online. Everyone has a website today, be it a News Agency, a Fashion Designer, an Automobile Company or anyone else. But just having a website isn't enough. There are certain questions you should answer before going into the online market :-
Can a user easily navigate to all the pages of your website?
Within seconds of landing on your website, can your visitors determine what your company does?
If you are selling a product then Is your pricing layout easy to understand?
Do you have a High Bounce Rate?
If the answer to all these questions is 'No' then you should probably think about optimizing your website design. A website can't simply succeed by excelling in sole design. It also needs to have good functionality and also needs to clearly communicate with your audience What you do, Why you do and For Whom you do it. Here are some tips for helping you redesign your website.
1. Design on Paper first
A good design starts with a good plan. Write down your ideas on paper or on a whiteboard. This will help you iterate your design as you refine it and add details as you move along. Drawing on the whiteboard will allow team members to give inputs. It is also easy to erase on a whiteboard or paper than to make changes in the code again and again. Once you have the final design take a snap of it on your mobile device and start coding it with your team.
2. Navigation
Navigation is the most important key while designing any website. It is just like a map which tells all the places users can visit on your website. Disorganized or confusing navigation is just like a nightmare for any user and can result in never getting that user again on your website. It is very important that the user find easily what he is looking for whether it is the payment option, contact section or anything else. Always use a Navigation Bar(navbar) for all the different links and make it responsive. If a user can't find what they're looking for, they have no reason to stay on your site and this will eventually result in high bounce rate and also promotion for your competitor.
3. Use the Slideshow/Carousel carefully
Using an image slideshow/carousel people have got a way to show a lot of information on the home page of your website. The most important thing you should consider is that all the images should be relevant to your website. But if your website is just about one product then I will suggest that you should probably ditch the idea of using a slideshow/carousel.
4. Use the Right Images
Fortunately, you have a lot of images to choose from on the internet for your website. But still, be careful while using images on your webpage. Don't stock your page with a lot of images that will cause it to load slowly on devices and slow internet connections.Also, portray genuine images on the webpage of real people that work in your organisation or office. Images will help in bringing more realism to your website and make sure images explain who you are and what your content is about.
5. Let Visitors Scroll on your Page
Don't worry if your content is slightly longer on the home page. Create about 3 to 5 different sections that help direct the new and recurring users on your website. But what should these sections be?The list could as big as you can think but here are some most crucial elements:-
Intro
Overview
Product Features
About Us
Case Study / Success Story
Contact Us
6. Don't worry about White Spaces
White Spaces are an essential element of any webpage. They help to break up pages and increase readability.Although a lot of white spaces could look superfluous i.e. more than enough. White Spaces are generally used for content prioritization and can play an important role in positioning content at different places or creating sections.
7. Optimize for Mobile
Most people surf the internet on their mobile devices. So while designing any website keep in mind that design for “Mobile First” and then for large screen devicesYou should keep in mind all the screen sizes like mobiles, tablets, laptops and desktops which are classified in portrait or landscape mode. You can use different frameworks available or use media queries to make your website responsive.
8. Include Social Media Icons
You should always link your social media icons on your webpage. Social Media can help generate a lot of traffic for your website. Instead of using names use the icons of the different social media accounts. These will also eventually help in the promotion.
9. Use Headings & Text
Written content on a webpage is equally important as the images. Properly place headings and text at different places on your website mixed with images. This will also help you in SEO as in the end we all want a lot of traffic for our website and that is only possible if you rank high in search engine results which is with the help of SEO.
10. Check Broken Links
Not only webpages but also images, stylesheets and scripts should be linked properly. Always test your website for broken links and most popularly known as Error 404: Resource Not Found.
Nothing frustrates a user more than a 404 page.
Thank You for reading a big blog post on small design hacks. There are a lot of important hacks you could use for designing any webpage and there are still a lot of them.

Redesign Prompt RESULTS!
Alright, thank you everyone who has voted, the results are now in! Overwhelmingly our winner is Ranmao 🐈!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First of all, I need to insert a few caveats here. Unlike with Victorian fashion, I do not have years and years of studying of Qing dynasty-fashion behind me. So whatever results I show here are the product of a fortnight of reading up and meticulous studying of contemporary photographs. a.k.a. I am merely scraping the surface here. But! I do promise that everything shown here is done to the best of my ability to be responsible as a content provider.
Now without further ado, let us dive into Ranmao’s current design, the blatantly obvious inaccuracies, and how I propose to redes...ign... her outfit while keeping the original intact as much.... as possible????  Heck, this is not even worthy of being called a ‘redesign’, this is straight up designing from scratch!
Tumblr media
Hair
Tumblr media
Let us start with her bangs. Her bangs are in fact surprisingly accurate, as late Qing dynasty women would wear their bangs in a variety of Bettie bangs trimmed well above the eyebrows. Having sides of the bangs growing longer framing the face was usual too, though they would be cut slightly thicker than Ranmao’s. Though, we don’t know how much hair Ranmao has, so I see no reason to alter it.
Tumblr media
Twin braids are very much associated with the “China doll look”, but they seem to have been branded into our image of the “Chinese Girl” because it was the go-to look for unmarried women in Republic China (which is many years later than Ranmao’s time, and also has more surviving images.)
Tumblr media
In Ranmao’s time, unmarried girls would either wear the bottom part of their hair down, or have everything tied into a single braid behind them. Girls who preferred a more feminine look would often decorate the sides or the top with flowers or other ornaments depending on their wealth.
Tumblr media
Yana’s notes say that the flower in Ranmao’s hair is a Chinese peony, which is also called the Empress of Flowers in Chinese as well as Japanese culture. I could find sources on how the peony was the symbol of the Empress of China, and how one better avoid wearing any type of peonies around the Empress herself for fear of being suspected of disrespect. But I could not find any evidence of such flowers being banned for other people, so presumably it was more an ‘unwritten code of politeness’ rather than fashion law.
Tumblr media
Hence, I kept the pink peony design for Ranmao, and decorated them in the way Qing women would have.
Tumblr media
Neckline
By far the most interesting thing I learned from this redesign attempt was that the “mandarin collar” - the thing that pops up first in most people’s minds when thinking about Chinese fashion - was in fact not at all common.
Tumblr media
In this academic work on Chinese fashion history, Finnane writes that the ‘high collar’ was “not a common feature of costume before the twentieth century.” Instead, most costumes would have had a round neckline.
Tumblr media
Finnane, Antonia. Changing Clothes in China : Fashion, History, Nation. New York: Columbia University Press, 2008. p. 93
The ‘high collar’ gained popularity in early 1900s in China after the Europeans brought with them the beauty standard for high collars, as well as slim-fitted silhouettes. The Chinese increasingly adopted this type of collar and the slim silhouette (the well known ‘china dress/qipao/cheongsam’), and the relatively many early photos that survived helped engrave this stereotype into our minds.
Tumblr media
Sleeves
I do not think it requires any mention, but 19th century Chinese fashion did not include boleros... For many of the original designs of Ranmao I can sort of see where Yana got that image from, but this bolero-look truly beats me.
Tumblr media
The sleeves worn in the late Qing period were relatively wide, though they were starting to slim down over time. Late Qing women enjoyed much more flexible clothing rules than earlier Qing women, and the width of the sleeves was in great part determined by personal preference, season, but mostly one’s wealth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Needless to say, the larger the sleeves the more fabric and embroidery it would require, and thus more expensive. Also, the wider the more it would get into the wearer’s way.
I don’t know how much thought Yana put into Ranmao’s original design in relation to her function as elite bodyguard, but considering how the original has zero practicality and only serves to maximise Ranmao’s attractiveness, I have no qualms about giving Ranmao fairly large sleeves too. Besides, let us assume that Lau is responsible for providing Ranmao with clothes. Illegal money tends to fill the pockets quite deeply, I don’t think he can’t spare a few pounds for big sleeves.
Tumblr media
Wider sleeves would expose much of ‘a lady’s precious skin’, as such a more fitted layer would have been worn underneath. (The sleeves under the wider sleeves obviously did not have to be orange-ish. This was merely coincidence that both my redesign and the visual source have this colour.)
Tumblr media
Silhouette
The figure hugging silhouette x Chinese clothes was - as mentioned above - not at all a thing in Ranmao’s time. In fact, the accentuation of the “female curves” was considered very inappropriate if not downright ugly in the Qing dynasty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finnane, Antonia. Changing Clothes in China : Fashion, History, Nation. New York: Columbia University Press, 2008. p. 94
Yana’s notes mention that the thing Ranmao wears is just an European corset and that that is the only thing ‘English’ about her attire.
Well... I don’t know where the idea that Victorians wore corsets on the outside comes from, but I myself admittedly was fooled by this a few years ago too... I promise you all now however, Victorians decidedly did not wear their ‘bras’ on the outside. I think even now this look is considered rather ‘questionable’ by most people.
Tumblr media
Instead, Qing dynasty clothes were mostly cut wide and straight, loosely dangling around their bodies offering maximum comfort and space. You feared Ranmao killing you in her corset? Now tremble before her now blessed with maximised agility.
Tumblr media
Trousers
Well... I considered ‘translating’ Ranmao’s attire to 2020 standard like I did for O!Ciel, but that would not be Tumblr-filter approved. Skirts so short they could be mistaken for a belt are nothing too surprising today, but wearing one with a split that deep is probably a bit too revealing even by today’s standards.
Tumblr media
By the late Qing dynasty, men and women, rich and poor alike predominantly wore trousers. Long robes (skirts) were definitely in fashion too, but they were reserved for those who could afford to not have much agility. If you were a farmer, robes would not have been your first option. Perhaps the way long skirts were viewed by the Qing Chinese was not unlike the way we see them now; ‘more classy’ ‘more feminine’ and ‘less convenient’, but not the only way to express femininity.
In these pictures below we can see relatively rich women, married and unmarried alike, all wearing trousers.
Tumblr media
Ranmao is predominantly a fighter, and as trousers are plenty feminine in Chinese fashion culture, I don’t see why she would not choose to wear trousers instead of a restricting long skirt. Hence I gave her a pair of trousers.
Tumblr media
Shoes
Like I said before, “the shoes are correct...” But the anklets definitely are not!
Tumblr media
Golden or silver anklets are something that are worn by very, VERY young children in China. Even to this day it is customary among many Chinese people to gift newborn children at least one piece of pendant, bracelet or anklet, for it is believed to bring the child luck. More practically, this piece of jewellery will become the child’s first piece of property then, which can be sold later SHOULD they ever run into a financially difficult situation.
Tumblr media
These anklets or bracelets would not be removed from the child unless they have outgrown them, which happens fairly quick. Ranmao who is probably full grown should have outgrown them at least ten years ago. Hence, seeing these things on Ranmao would probably make it look like she is still wearing diapers or bibs.
Tumblr media
Chinese people would likewise not have worn shoes barefoot. Instead, they would have worn cotton socks which were mostly white.
DOUBLE HAMMERS
HERE COME THE WEAPONS! Luckily Yana wrote the following note or I would never have guessed what they are for my knowledge about Chinese weapons is next to nothing.
“These are【SUPER】heavy. They are weapons called 双錘 (double hammers) and they in fact exist. I heard these were used by power-type warriors.”
Tumblr media
So, I googled 双錘 and it turns out that the type Ranmao is holding do indeed exist! But... only in fiction and theatre.
Tumblr media
The hammers that were used in actual combat were either very thin and long, or short and plump. Such hammers were one of the most primitive metal weapons in China, and quickly fell out of favour among Chinese warriors when more practical weapons such as the metal spear, sword and bows were invented. The hammers mostly retained their value because of their weight in heroic tales and myths about legendary warriors and deities.
I don’t have the full details, but apparently according to some legends or myths, one of such big-ass hammers could deal a force of 200kg, and thus 400kg combined. Regardless of this being realistic or not, it sure does sound very cool! It is therefore no wonder this primitive weapon retains its popularity even today.
Tumblr media
Nowadays when these hammers are used, they are either the blown up theatrical versions, or the smaller versions for the sake of preserving martial arts.
I had a bit of a dilemma as to which version to give Ranmao, but in the end I settled with the short and heavy ones because I wanted to keep the idea of this small and innocent looking girl wielding solid metal balls. Two cheer-leading sticks would simply not have the same weight, figuratively and literally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright everyone! Did you enjoy my response to your votes? I hope you did ^^ Non-European fashion history really is not my strong suit, so my deepest apologies if I messed anything up.
Pray tell if I did, I am always happy to learn ^^

My TFP Humanformers Headcanons: With Pictures This Time
Originally posted here, but that’s all text only.
In my defence, I studied fashion at university level for two years, so this post was inevitable.
Optimus Prime - James Dean Style, aka “Hot Dad”
Tumblr media
Optimus would probably love doing the research to determine human styles and what he likes best.
I can picture him doing a 1950s inspired look, more Greaser than stuffy suits, but in a more James Dean way and not John Travolta in Grease kind of way if he needed to go undercover as Jack’s dad or something.
He’d be a bit older than James Dean was in the above photo, definitely in his 30s at the youngest. Would still have silver mixed in with his black hair, to replicate the silver details on his helm. He doesn’t smoke, but might chew on a pen cap every now and then without thinking about it.
Ultra Magnus - Vittorio de Sica - Classic Italian Suit Chic
Tumblr media
When doing research into human styles, Optimus showed him a Hermes magazine and some European business style guides from GQ and decided he liked the formal suit look. I imagine he’d have a very Italian look to him, as he might be wearing an Italian or Continental style suit.
For some reason, Magnus as a 40 or 50 year old stern and stylish Italian guy just works really well. He’d be extremely well dressed, well groomed, would still demand authority, and I imagine him looking like Vittorio de Sica, pictured above.
He would perhaps use his holoform to accompany Fowler in discussions with some military superiors.
Initially, he wanted to pick a military style uniform for his holoform, and Fowler had to explain to him in detail why that wasn’t an acceptable thing to do. So he went for chic lawyer instead.
Ratchet - Old War Vet + What He Thinks is Nevada Style: George Gabby Hayes
Tumblr media
Ratchet would literally just be my dad or any of his old war buddies, possibly with a mobility aid like a cane or walking stick because that seems to be very popular amongst my dad and his friends. (To quote my father: “I can walk with it and I can beat people with it, so it works fine for me, don’t touch me dammit I can get up by myself.”)
I get the feeling he’d approach designing his holoform from a logical angle, wanting to fit in with the locals to avoid detection. Unfortunately, this meant he found a bunch of old Western movies online when looking up style inspiration, and decided that this was probably the best look to go for since all these movies were filmed in Nevada, so surely this would be familiar to people, right? (Wrong.)
He’d be tough and wrinkly, but give those precious old man smiles with big twinkling eyes that shine so brightly against his old weathered skin, and that alone would get him get out of trouble with the authorities-- Or helps him get the others out of trouble. He would play the “I’m just an old person, what do you want from me” card and he would succeed. Then he’d turn around and get mad that everyone treats him like he’s old, lmao.
Arcee - Tori Amos: Late 1990s/2000s Casual
Tumblr media
Arcee would go for 20s-30s in terms of age, motorcyclist, we already see this on screen every now and then. I think they would estimate for approximate human age relative to one another’s Cybertronian age, so this works as Arcee seems to be younger than the rest.
I picture her outside of her motorcycle gear in a very late 90s/early 2000s style look, casual but stylish. It would throw people off because she’s so much mature than what people might assume, which gives her an edge in conversation.
Her cover story could be that she’s Jack’s cousin, or maybe a friend of his mom’s, depending on what the mission/situation is. Could also possibly say that she’s one of Jack’s co-workers if need be. She’d probably redesign her holoform to have red hair just to troll Jack (the classmate he has a crush on is a redhead).
Bulkhead - Mark Sagato + 1990s Alt Rock Gear
Tumblr media
I can easily picture Bulkhead’s holoform looking similar to Mark Sagato, pictured above, who is a former Sumo wrestler and a film actor.
He’d be rocking a green cargo jacket layered with a plaid flannel shirt over a plain white tee or a band t-shirt and blue jeans with black steel toe boots, possibly with a workman’s tool belt. His cover story could be that he’s Miko’s uncle visiting from Japan!
I imagine a very casual 90s alternative rock meets almost-lumberjack look for him, to match Miko a bit. He’d probably have some ribbon wristbands from live shows/gigs up his arm, because Miko would absolutely encourage accessorising.
Wheeljack - Billy Idol + Specifically Grunge Punk
Tumblr media
Wheeljack would be every single old school dude in the grunge punk scene that I’ve ever met. He’d look like an older Billy Idol, but only if you imagine what that would look like, not like, the actually currently old Billy Idol.
Older guy, skinny but tough, jean jacket covered in patches and buttons and pins, black jeans held together with random string sewn in like embroidery thread, a pair of Converse so old that they might be from the 70s original line. Grey bandana also covered in pins around his head and another around his neck. He would also have ribbon wristbands from shows, courtesy of Miko’s style advice.
Bumblebee - Fred Olande: 1995 Was a Great Year for Skateboarding
Tumblr media
Bumblebee would be a young guy, maybe even late teens/early 20s, massively baggy yellow hoodie with a black jean vest over the top like a lot of young guys wore in the 90s back when I wasn’t a dinosaur myself. Jeans that are pale from being worn/washed too many times, threadbare around the knees, wearing some kind of skateboarding shoe. I imagine him wearing a beanie as well. Every pocket is full of graffiti pens for the skatepark and his phone screen is cracked.
Raf would help him with his holoform details, and I can picture him basing his look off of some of Raf’s family photos, so he’d definitely be Mexican/Latinx. His cover story could be that he’s Raf’s cousin visiting from a border town or Mexico, and his excuse for not speaking would simply be that he doesn’t know that much English, so that would work out perfectly.
Smokescreen - 1970s/1980s Sports Gear Forever
Tumblr media
Smokescreen would inevitably try to go for a 1970s/80s movie inspired sporty look, and would probably look to be about in his late teens/early 20s.
Think classic white Nikes, very sporty 80s style with a white and blue puffy jacket (or sweat shirt) and red fabric wristbands. If anyone has a mullet or a feathered hair style, it’s gonna be Smokescreen. His tank top is Adidas, and his sweatpants are also Adidas.
Unfortunately, he then discovers that shorts exist, and cycles between the classic Butterick patterns above, depending on the mission/who he is trying to impress that day.
(I won’t lie, I did the shorts over sweatpants thing well into the 90s. Yes, I was made fun of.)

design ideas - d.d.
plot: you and david disagree on the designs for his next merch collection
word count: 1150
masterlist
“Babe, come take a look at the new designs,” David shouted from the couch, where he had his laptop open to the new merch line and sample products.
You dropped the knife that you had just finished using into the sink and carried your plate of apple slices and peanut butter over to the living room. You set the plate down on the coffee table, eating a slice as you settled into the couch next to David. He wrapped his arm around you and pulled you into him.
“So this is the logo for the new collection,” he said, pointing to multicolored bubble letters spelling out Clickbait. “We’re going to put it as a small logo on t-shirts and a large logo on hoodies, and the words are going to go down the leg on the sweatpants,” he explained as he clicked through the mock up design ideas of pastel colored clothing, phone cases, and phone cases.
As he scrolled through the different pieces, you found yourself unimpressed by the line. It didn’t really feel personal or authentic to him or his brand.
A frown formed on David’s face as he noticed your lack of enthusiasm regarding the designs. “What’s wrong?” he asked, suddenly worried about the new line.
“Nothing. It’s just, I don’t totally love it,” you admitted, shrugging your shoulders and popping another apple slice into your mouth.
He leaned forward and setting his laptop on the coffee table so he could turn and face you. “Why not?”
You took a deep breath, not wanting to hurt his feelings, “It just doesn’t feel like you.”
His eyebrows knit together, confused by what you meant.
“I mean, it’s super trendy and the pieces are cute, but come on David, you’re never going to wear anything from this collection after you take promo shots,” you explained.
David was still puzzled by your reaction, he had expected you to love the line. “Is that a bad thing? If the pieces are trendy then people are going to want to buy them.”
“It seems like a cash grab, Dave,” you shrugged, watching his face fall.
“A lot of work went into this line, babe,” he sighed, not sure about what he was going to do now.
“And I’m not saying that you can’t release it.”
“But you hate it,” he reminded you.
“I don’t hate it,” you groaned, taking a deep breath to gather your thoughts. “I guess I just don’t understand why you’d sell pastel hoodies when you basically live in black. You should design and sell merch that you would wear.”
“You’re right,” he replied. “But that’s all I’ve ever really released for merch and I wanted to try something new,”
“So ease into adding colors to a collection, babe. You can slowly change your brand but it comes across as really inauthentic if you do something just because it’s trendy.”
David nodded, listening to what you were saying. He appreciated how you explained your thoughts from both a business and personal perspective.
 ———
 “I think I’m going to head to bed,” David said, getting up from the couch to grab water from the kitchen. You had spent the evening watching David stream and then put on a movie after cooking dinner.
“I’ll be in soon. There’s a few things I need to finish,” you said, tilting your head over the top of the couch as David leaned down to kiss you.
“Don’t stay up too late. I love you,” he whispered, kissing you again.
“I won’t, I promise. I love you, too. Good night babe,” you smiled.
You waited until David was back in his room to pull your iPad and apple pencil out of your purse. David’s laptop was still on the coffee table and decided to send yourself the rough sketches of his new merch. You had interned for a fashion designer when you were in college studying graphic design and advertising, and you wanted to come up with some way to redesign it that felt more authentic to David’s personality without completely changing the entire line. You opened Procreate and imported the logo. You didn’t care if he didn’t love your ideas, but you wanted to remind him of what he used to release.
You played around with different color palettes, trying to see what worked and what didn’t with the merch he had previously released. After a few attempts, you decided that the outline of the letters should be multicolored and the clothing pieces should only be sold in neutrals: black, light grey, and white. The line was still fun and appealing to the masses, but it was more grounded than his original design he had shown you.
You found the process both exhilarating and entertaining and you spent some time creating new logo designs and color palettes for future merch drops, although you didn’t seem to care if he didn’t want to release anything you created.
A few hours later, as you were putting the finishing touches on your ideas, you heard David’s bedroom door open and he shuffled across the hardwood floor until you were in his line of sight.
“I thought you said you coming to bed soon,” Dave pouted, his eyes half open as he sleepily rubbed them.
You glanced down at the time and realized it was nearly 3am. “I’m sorry, I must’ve lost track of time.”
“What are you working on?” he asked, sitting next to you on the couch and reaching for your iPad.
“Just a couple of designs ideas,” you said, before reluctantly handing it over and warning him that you still needed to tweak a few things.
You nervously chewed on your bottom lip as he scrolled through your art, your eyes flickering between the screen and his face. “You obviously don’t have to release anything I came up, but I had a few ideas on how to rebrand yourself, if that’s something you’re interested in.”
“My girl is insanely talented,” David grinned, leaning over and kissing your neck.
“Tell me more,” you insisted.
“She’s also insanely hot,” he whispered, his hot breath against your neck sent shivers down your spine. “And I think she should work for me,” he added, pulling you on to his lap.
“Oh really?” you giggled, wrapping your hands around the back of his neck and kissing him. His hands gripped your hips and he pulled you into him.
“I’m serious,” David said, ruining the moment. You pulled away from him, not sure what to say. “You’re talented, babe. And your designs are good. I want to release them and I want you to help with future designs,” he explained.
“David,” you sighed. “I appreciate the offer and I’m more than happy to help when you need me, but I just want to be your girlfriend, not your designer.”
“Are you sure? I pay really well.”
“I thought you said you don’t mix business with pleasure,” you teased, kissing his jawline.

Behind the Scenes of System76: Industrial Design
Tumblr media
Since moving into a factory space in 2018, System76 has delved deeper and deeper into manufacturing hardware in-house. Three years later, we’ve introduced five Thelio desktops, fine-tuned the hardware, developed our fully configurable Launch keyboard, and optimized our production processes. Helming the design process is Mechanical Engineer John Grano, who wears a number of different hats here. We sat down with John this week to discuss industrial design and the team behind our beautiful open source hardware.
How would you describe industrial design for people unfamiliar with the term?
To me, industrial design is basically the art of making something into a usable product. In industrial design, you have to balance looks and function, and that drives your form. It’s kind of like hardware UX in that it’s really important to have the right feel. If you can make the system connect better with people, they’ll like it more. Adding that softness we do with Thelio, like slightly rounded edges and darker wood, it makes it a little more approachable to have a semi-natural looking system and not something that’s blinking at you with red lights all the time.
System76 itself is a group of hardcore programmers and people that are really into Linux, but I think the idea of trying to democratize Linux is extremely important. If you can create something that doesn’t have that robotic aesthetic, it will provide people with something that feels more familiar and usable. No one really wants to go sit in a car that looks like a square with wheels on it. They want something that makes them feel something, maybe openness or comfort, when they’re in it.
What inspired you to get into mechanical engineering, and how did you end up at System76?
The way my brain works lends itself well to engineering, for better or for worse. There’s a lot of really solid engineers who don’t have much creativity, and then there are a lot of people who have great creative ability, but can’t do math. I kind of fluctuate in the middle; I wouldn’t say I’m the best at math or the most creative person in the entire world, but I have enough of each that the combination pushed me towards mechanical engineering. I like working with my hands, and it’s more of a study of how things work in the real world versus computer science, which is a purely digital and nontangible practice.
During school I worked mainly as a bike mechanic, and that helped me to think about how to build things better. That led me to my first internship at a bike company working in a wind tunnel, which was really fun. Realizing that I could probably never get a job there—or at least one that would pay me enough to live—I started working at an environmental engineering company, where I prototyped scientific sampling systems for R&D that would process materials with all these gasses at really high heat and tried not to die. It was kind of fun making these large-scale systems that were basically just gigantic science experiments, but I didn’t really have the creative outlet I wanted in terms of making something that looks good.
One of the main things that drew me to System76 was being able to have a solid influence on what tools we were able to use and how we were going to push the design. In the past three years, it’s pretty wild to see what we’ve been able to accomplish coming from a completely empty warehouse to being able to crank out parts.
I had also previously, while working at these scientific instrument companies, been working with a local company to design and develop a cargo bicycle, so I had that experience as well in terms of consumer product development with overseas manufacturing. I think that helped get me in the door here.
Tumblr media
Let’s talk a bit about your team. Who do you collaborate with on a typical day?
It’s a very small team and everyone does a lot. I pretty much lead the mechanical engineering team slash design team...slash manufacturing team. Being a small company, we are all wearing a bunch of different hats. Aside from doing the initial design work on all of our Thelio desktops and the Launch keyboard, I also program our laser-punch machine and our brake press and run through all of the design for manufacturing hang ups that show up. Those changes tend to be a result of our current tools, and internal capabilities.
Crystal came on last August as our first CNC Machinist. She heads up all of the machining, trains our operators, makes sure our parts are coming out in a nice clean fashion, and has done a lot of work on minimizing machine time and maximizing the parts we can get out. She also provides really great feedback on what's possible and what kind of special fixtures or tools we'll need to make for a specific part. Around the same time we picked up our first Haas 3-axis CNC mill to start working on the Launch project. That led to some other opportunities to make parts for Thelio and improve the feel of some of the parts that we were pumping out.
We just hired Cary, who came from a similar background as me in consumer product development, as well as low-scale scientific machine development. He’s going to help build manufacturing tools for us, and he’s only been here now for two or three weeks. Going forward, Cary will be heading up the Thelio line long-term, and I’ll be moving to some interesting R&D work.
And Zooey?
Zooey doesn’t really do much. She just kind of sits there and waits for people to feed her their lunch. I take her out for walks during the day so she can get away from everyone petting her. She doesn’t like when they do that.
Tumblr media
What was the R&D process like for Launch?
Launch is a less complicated product in that we don’t have to deal with things like cooling. Even dropping a PCB into aluminum housing deals with multiple processes, like using the laser and CNC machine. This was a start to looking at those processes to see how much time it takes to produce parts, the costs going into making them, and monitoring the cutting quality. You have to be familiar with the machines and know what you’re looking for when you see a tool going dull.
We first let the software experts do their thing and optimize a layout they wanted for their programming life. Then I was given that template, built a couple of sheet metal chassis that we wired up to test that layout, and made a bunch of little changes to that to get that right secret sauce for our keyboard-centric workflow in Pop!_OS. Once we got a sheet metal product that we were sure was going to be usable, we decided officially that we were going to pursue making a keyboard. That came with a whole new set of manufacturing requirements that we would have to look into.
We spent a ton of time working on pocket profile. When you look at a Launch, you’ll see that it’s not a perfect rectangle. That’s because when you’re using a mill, you have a round tool, so you can go through and get close to a pretty small radius on the corner, but you can never make it exact. If we wanted to get a very small, tight pocket, we’d have to use a very small cutter that takes an extremely long period of time.
We’re taking raw billet, which are these huge 12-foot-long sticks of aluminum that we cut down to get our final product. We went with a rounded rectangle so that we could use our cutter and decrease the overall time to machine that part. There was a lot of work in that and making sure the pockets were all 13.95mm versus 13.9mm versus 14.1mm.
Tumblr media
We also did a lot of R&D on how we go about putting the angle bar on. Magnetic assembly seemed to be a good idea. We went from trying to glue magnets in to doing what's called press fitting. The bars come right out of powder coating while they’re nice and warm, when the aluminum is slightly larger than when it cools down. Those magnets aren’t actually adhered to anything in the bars; they’re squeezed in nice and tight from the aluminum cooling and contracting around them. That’s called a press fit, and doing that makes the process faster and less expensive.
It’s similar with the bottoms of Launch; we have steel plates that we press fit into that part as opposed to gluing or screwing, but that we do before powder coating; steel rusts, and we don’t want someone opening up their keyboard in a year and finding a little bit of rust floating underneath their super high-end PCB. So we do that, sand it down, use our media blaster to clean off the surface from the tool paths you see from the mill, and then we powder coat it through and through.
Tumblr media
Word on the Denver streets is that Thelio Major is getting a redesign soon. What does that entail?
We’re bringing Thelio Major a lot more in line with Thelio Mega in terms of a different PCI mount for graphics cards, because we know that’s been a pain point for a lot of our users. We want to provide a little bit more robust installation for these graphics cards, which continue to increase in size and weight. The NVIDIA 3000-series cards are almost a pound heavier in some instances, and that’s a lot of weight to be shipping across the country.
We also want to continue to make Thelio Major cooler and quieter when it’s running with these new GPUs. Our new brake press allows us to make radius bends on parts, so we’re starting to run through R&D of a laser-welded external. It’s a wholesale departure from us using custom brackets and 3M VHB tape. That will provide a nicer finished product to our end user, and it’ll allow us to make our product faster with less material and less steps.
What qualities do you look for when adding someone to the team?
Creativity is extremely important. As a small manufacturing company, our priorities can shift on a day or in an afternoon where we don’t have the full line of product anymore. There are all sorts of examples in the past few years of times where you have to react pretty quickly. The motherboard’s been EOL’d, or we have to change our sheet metal design, build a new part, things like that. Making sure that someone can adapt to those changes on a moment’s notice is one of the key parts of the job.
We also want people who get excited about a new challenge and have the desire to keep improving something. I look for people who like to make things and go back in and refine it and not hold it up on this pillar. It’s good to not look at something like it’s perfect.
You have a lot of love for your Audi. What do you love about it over other options?
I like German cars. We have a family of them. They’re high-performance and not too expensive if you do all the work on it yourself. There’s a huge after-market community that tunes and changes these cars, which is pretty fun. Plus I prefer the metric system. Having a standard system drives me nuts, because what the [REDACTED] are fractions?
My real love, though, is bikes. I love tuning and riding bikes, and I love that more than I like to work on cars. It comes out of tinkering. I work with carbon fiber, I’ve done a lot of repairs on bikes over the years—there’s a certain sense of freedom you get from riding a bike that you can’t get from anything else. Not motorcycles, not cars.

AUgust - Oh, Worm (p1)
Written for AUgust (Day 2: College). So, I saw that “College” was my prompt for the day and, uh, I may have recalled the “Oh,Worm” verse and anyway, here we are. Obikin, intro to sugar daddies. (Sugar Daddy 101?)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The thing was, Obi-Wan tried to take down the profile that he had - allegedly - made the night before as soon as he realized what had happened. He really had. He’d scrambled to pull his phone out from the time Bant asked him if he’d had any hits yet on his profile.
That had been before he’d even seen the photos on the app; he definitely hadn’t managed to take a picture of himself at that angle, no matter what Bant said, or how innocent she tried to look with her huge eyes.
He’d absently thrown something at her, whatever was within reach on the desk. It would later turn out to be his notes for a paper he’d been working on for nearly two months, but that was neither here nor there. She’d ignored the scattered paper and said, “Obi-Wan, wait, listen, did you even look to see if anyone swiped on you?”
“No one’s going to swipe on me,” he snapped back, glaring down at his phone screen and feeling his teeth click shut even as a blush spread up his cheeks.
“Well?” she asked, her tone soothing. “What’ve you got?”
Obi-Wan stared at his phone, feeling something like horror and something like shamed embarrassment making a home in his chest. “A date,” he said, carefully, “I suppose. Tonight. If I want it.”
#
The app that Bant had so kindly signed him up for was not a dating service, precisely. Or, rather, it was, Obi-Wan supposed. It was just a dating service that allowed for, well. The exchange of goods or services.
“I’m a biology professor,” Obi-Wan complained, later, as Bant was going through his closet. “I have my PhD. Now you want me to - to sell my body.”
“It’s more renting it,” Bant said, absently, ignoring Obi-Wan’s goran of misery and the thonk of his head against the wall. She poked her head out of the closet. “Oh, stop it. It’s not like that. You’re just going to offer some… companionship. It’s all perfectly above board. You don’t actually have to…” She made a complicated motion with her hands, which brought a flush of red to his ears.
“I don’t think this is a good idea,” Obi-Wan said, crossing his arms. He had an afternoon lecture in less than two hours. He couldn’t just keep standing in his room, trying to find clothing appropriate to…. What he was possibly going to do.
“You did last night,” Bant said. “You agreed with me. Come on, Obi-Wan. This may be the only way to get funding for your study on platyhelminthes.” Obi-Wan cast her a baleful look. The state of their department’s finances was a constant source of dread, one he didn’t particularly want to consider.
She only raised an eyebrow at him, her recently shaved head all pink from the sun she’d gotten as she pointed at him. “Now, come on, tell me some more about your sugar daddy.”
Obi-Wan groaned. “Please,” he said, “don’t call him that.”
Bant shrugged, turning back to his closet. “I’m just calling him what he is. What did you say his name was? Skywalker?”
#
Anakin Skywalker had… requested that Obi-Wan accompany him out to some kind of gala. According to some quick online snooping, Skywalker was some kind of extreme sports junkie; apparently he flew very fast planes and had made a name by designing a proprietary type of fuel injector and….
In all honesty, Obi-Wan barely remembered to change his car’s oil on time. He got lost in the technical jargon and set aside the computer. Apparently, the fuel injector had become very popular. Skywalker had made a small fortune off of it and then made that fortune bigger by redesigning some kind of flight controls.
All of that had led to some kind of awards dinner. One that, apparently, Skywalker had been unable to find a date to on his own.
And so he had, well, not quite hired Obi-Wan. Just… retained his services. With the understanding that, in return, Obi-Wan might get some sort of, well, financial compensation.
“What if someone in the department finds out?” Obi-Wan asked, sitting on the edge of his bed and staring at the floor. Bant had laid out clothes that she insisted brought out his eyes. Based on the pictures she’d posted, he rather doubted that Skywalker was interested in his eyes. They hadn’t really been the focus of her selected shots.
“That you went on a date?” Bant asked, absently twirling around in his little desk chair. Obi-Wan glared at her. “You’re allowed to do that. Tenure track doesn’t prevent dating.”
“No.” He scowled. “What if they find out I’m a… a… what did you call it?”
“A sugar baby,” she said, breezily, and he winced. She shrugged. “I don’t see why they would.”
“Wonderful,” he said, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Excellent. I’ll just get ready then, shall I?”
#
Obi-Wan still had nice evening wear. He’d not had much opportunity to wear it, but it fit well enough, after he put Bant’s less-than-helpful selections away. He tugged the sleeves straight, hoped that he wasn’t expected to dress in some other fashion - the messages he’d gotten from Skywalker had said it was a black-tie event - and did what he could with his hair.
And then he waited, having serious regrets about giving Skywalker his address. Skywalker had thought it important that they show up at the gala together, and Obi-Wan had been off his balance enough to agree, but, really, giving some man he met through an app his address had been…. Well.
Not one of his prouder moments. He sighed and adjusted his cufflinks. It had been, really, longer than he liked to think about since he’d been on a date. He was teaching more classes than he liked, and so many of them were full of freshmen - he didn’t remember some many people wanting to take Intro to Bio when he was going through school - and his current research was--
Someone knocked at his door. Probably Skywalker. He hoped it was Skywalker, if Quinlan had decided to stop by, the evening promised to get more awkward. He straightened his tie, blew out a breath, and headed for the door.
He opened it without hesitating, refusing to allow himself to pause. A tall man stood on the other side. It took Obi-Wan a moment to recognize Skywalker from his pictures online. He looked different with his hair combed back, wearing a suit instead of pilot’s gear. He was… stunningly attractive, moreso in person, somehow, than he’d looked in his pictures.
A hot tinge of worry, of knowledge that he was about to get in far, far over his head, spread through Obi-Wan’s gut.
Skywalker stared back at him, blinking rapidly and looking Obi-Wan up and down. Obi-Wan wondered, vaguely, if he was meeting expectations. A part of him - a quite large part, really - hoped that Skywalker would simply realize he’d made a mistake, turn around, and leave. Instead, he stared.
Obi-Wan cleared his throat and said, “Well, hello. You must be, well. Do I call you Anakin?”
Skywalker looked up to meet his eyes, dragging his attention away from whatever had snagged it somewhere lower down. “Yes,” he said, and cleared his throat, flashing Obi-Wan a smile. “And you must be Obi-Wan. Ready?”
Obi-Wan considered. He could still, he supposed, say no and turn around, strip off his suit and go to review the results of his last round of testing on his specimens, but-- But he’d promised Bant he’d at least give the entire… arrangement a try.
The department, it seemed, needed him.
“Yes,” he said, pulling the door shut at his back and stepping forward. Skywalker really was a bold one, putting a hand on Obi-Wan’s back as they walked down the path to the driveway. Obi-Wan shivered down his spine and swallowed. He’d always enjoyed a fancy gala, anyway.
Fly Home
Sam and Bucky get stranded in Siberia with their only way out damaged from an explosion during the mission that brought them out here.
This is an entry for @star-spangled-bingo 2020. Word count: 1591. Square filled: “Sam’s Wings”
Pairing: Platonic! Sam Wilson x Bucky Barnes
Warnings: I am not a mechanic, much less someone with any knowledge about the workings of mechanical wings, so please forgive me for my technical failings.
Tumblr media
The wings are a mess. Sam, thankfully, has gotten away from the explosion that tore holes in his flying rig with some cuts and scrapes, as the wings bore the brunt of the blast. So now he and Bucky are in the snow-clad, Siberian wilderness with no plan of extraction.  They weren’t allowed to bring radio or cell phones because it’s traceable equipment, their comms fell out during the fight, and they’re probably hours away from any sort of civilization. Truly, truly lost.
Bucky sits down as Sam removes what remains of his wings from his back and lays them on the ground before joining Bucky. The cold is mostly kept out by the insulating gear they are wearing, but he is certain that will change soon.
“You got a plan for this one?” Sam asks as Bucky opens his bag. Retrieving what seems to be a toolbox from the bag, Bucky reaches for Sam’s wings and tugs them over.
Bucky stretches the wings to their full span, and scanning the damage, says, “If we can fix your wings, you can fly us outta here.”
Sam laughs, the tension lifting just a little, and when Bucky looks up, deadpan, Sam stops. “Those wings are Swiss cheese, man. And even if they weren’t, how do you know how to fix them?” He asks.
“You have the blueprints, don’t you?”
And yes, Sam does. Riri Williams, the genius spotted by Sharon Carter at Stark Expo last year, redesigned Sam’s wings and walked him through the entire process. He knows how they work in theory, and he has the blueprints stored in his arm panel, but, “You sure you know what you’re doing?”
Bucky laughs, now, and something in Sam’s stomach swells with warmth at the sight and sound. “ ‘Course not. That’s why you’re going to help me, Cap,” Bucky tells him, and Sam pulls forth the blueprints, taking off the control panel on his arm and presenting it, with a roll of his eyes. This centenarian is going to be the death of him. “We’ll need parts, though,” Bucky says, looking at Redwing, who is laying in the snow, also having been debilitated earlier in the day.
Sam is horrified. “No!” He says, reaching for his metal companion before Bucky can get his hands on him. “Riri put some spare panels in the pack,” Sam informs, keeping Redwing behind him and opening the pack. He’s still not on board with this DIY plan, and if they weren’t already sheltered by a forest, he’d have tried to find a safer location, but right now, there’s no way of knowing if there is one. So he lets Bucky survey the equipment.
“This is good. We can work with this.”
And with that, they get started. They only need to repair the upper surface of the wings to ensure that air stays trapped underneath so that Sam can fly, and the blueprints help. Sam’s knowledge of his wings and how they operate, when added to Bucky’s knowledge of metallic body parts, make for enough understanding to fix these wings.
They work mostly in silence, allowing the failure of the mission to hover in the background while they put their way out of here back together again. Helmut Zemo, having escaped from the Raft during the Snap, has slipped from their fingers yet again. Sam thinks about what must go through Bucky’s mind every time he sees his face, whether in combat or during a mission briefing.
What goes through Sam’s head is white-hot rage. Zemo killed a lot of people in Vienna, and caused that much more havoc, amongst the Avengers and otherwise. Now, many of them aren’t even alive to see him roam free.
The world is struggling, upside down, and going all the wrong ways, after the Blip. Fear reigns stronger than ever, and so does mistrust. Sam’s been carrying the weight of the shield in a world that doesn’t want to see him do so, a world that longs for that old-fashioned symbol of heroism now more than ever, and it’s taking its toll.
He has help, of course. He sees people who help with it. He firmly believes that he is the right person to carry it, no matter what the world says. He has always fought for what is right, and what he believes in, and he believes that this is his calling. He still has the VA, and Sharon, and Bucky, of course.
Bucky, who now studies a larger hole near the shoulder of the left wing with determination. His eyes are narrowed at it like it’s a miniature battle all on its own. Bucky walks the Earth with his shoulders tense and braced, and a fight in his fists, waiting for the next battle in this war that isn’t ending. Except for when he’s with Sam, away from conference rooms in the Compound or in the busy streets of New York. In their apartment in Queens, he unwinds.
They laugh together at silly sitcoms that Sam has been introducing him to, he relearns the history he wasn’t allowed to remember, and he marvels at the advancements of technology. They spent a month’s worth of weekends exploring every science museum Bucky could find in the area thanks to Google. And he’s really taken to cooking.
Not only does he enjoy eating the stuff Sam makes and that he has quickly learned how to replicate, he loves discovering a new smell wafting from somewhere in their diverse neighborhood and asking Sam about it, before going online to see the nearest place they can get it from. Takeout for a taste, another google for a recipe, and a new dish added to Bucky’s ever-growing repertoire. Queens is a good place to expand one’s palates and horizons.
They chose it when the remaining enhanced individuals of the world had recuperated enough to get back out there. Brooklyn came with too much pressure for Bucky to remember, to be something he no longer is, and living in the Compound would mean living at work, which didn’t feel healthy, either. Sam felt that Queens would be a good fresh start, for them both. A blank page. Not to mention it helps to be nearby in case the Parker kid gets in trouble, which he does quite a bit.
Sam smiles down at the panel he’s repairing when he remembers Bucky’s paternal ranting and raving after they caught Peter trying to take on some robbers with alien equipment. When Sam looks up, Bucky is staring at him, and he feels his cheeks heat.
They’re almost done, with just one more hole in the upper surface left when Bucky pierces the silence. “We don’t have this piece,” he says, pointing towards that gap. Riri couldn’t give him a full set of backup wings for obvious reasons, so she gave him the panels for the regions of the wings likely to experience more wear and tear. Her calculations must not have considered an actual bomb, Sam thinks.
But Bucky is already working on the solution. “It kind of matches this part in my arm,” Bucky says, tapping a human forefinger on his upper arm. Near the crook of his elbow is a metal panel that does, indeed, look like it might fit in the damaged part of Sam’s wings.
“We’re not takin’ your arm off, Barnes.”
“You don’t have to. Just the one part. Shuri taught me how,” Bucky says so matter-of-factly that if Sam wasn’t aware of the context, Bucky could’ve been talking casually about any number of every day tricks the Wakandan princess taught him. As it is, Sam does know the context, and he does not want to mess with his partner’s arm.
He tells him as much. “Fine.”
“I can’t be the one to do it,” Bucky tells Sam, and the latter’s eyebrows raise as he suppresses the want to roll his eyes heavenwards. “There’s some sensitive circuitry near that panel and if I try to open it from my angle, I might hit it. It’s better if you do it.”
Sam looks at Bucky, hoping he’s bluffing, pulling some stupid joke in a situation that it doesn’t fit in, but no. No bluff. “Fine,” Sam repeats, huffing, and scoots closer. The screwdriver in Sam’s hand is dirty with soot and traces of grease. “I don’t need to sterilize this, do I?” He asks.
Bucky shakes his head but wipes the screwdriver on his pants anyway before handing it back. “You might need some lubrication, though.”
That is the kind of comment that Sam would have cracked a joke at around an hour ago, but now, he coats the tip in some machine oil from the toolbox and sends a prayer above before starting to pry at the panel in Bucky’s upper arm. Bucky’s breath is warm against Sam’s ear, and he struggles to ignore it. Bucky’s eyes are bright blue in his periphery, and he focuses on the gleam of black and gold in front of him. The panel lifts, and he reaches for it with light hands, a paramedics steady fingers, and removes it.
Bucky takes it from him and starts altering the shape with a knife he has produced from nowhere and once that’s done, hands it to Sam for the final honors. The piece clicks into place. It looks a bit different, a darker shade amidst the red, grey, and white of Sam’s wings, but Sam thinks it’s a good fix. A job well done. A way home.
are there any other characters that you headcanon as vegan? if yes, can you explain why you do? 👀
in my lucky seven sanctuary au bev, richie, bill, and mike grow up in derry or just some small town, although the idea of the losers club being called to derry so that Their kids can defeat It like mike’s dad was is👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽 but without the supernatural element they grow up in a small town, mike on the farm that he swears he’s gonna get away from, maybe open up a sanctuary, create a new legacy. richie just wants to Get Away from all the small town small minded people, he wants to get out in the world. he’s also a total hippie. peace, love and happiness, my friends. bill is just regular and bev doesn’t know them.
so bill just completely fucks off for college like who knows what the fuck he’s doing there’s just some random obscure instagram posts and that’s it. then he publishes a book and suddenly he’s Everywhere, then he publishes another one you know a real stephen king insert and next thing you know there’s a movie! and wow! hot new celebrity couple bill denbrough and audra phillips seen eating at trendy vegan restaurants across europe! audra worked on a movie early in her career that totally changed her life and lead her to go vegan and bill was like this is the coolest woman in the world i’m gonna follow her to the end of the earth (which is 10 yrs away now according to the UN).
mike and richie go to separate but close colleges so they can stay together. richie majors in environment and sustainability and minors in theater. mike majors in business and dabbles in poli-sci and veterinarian studies which is where he meets eddie!
eddie had it rough growing up he was rly isolated and lonely and barely allowed to do anything. one day he’s exploring the woods by his house and he finds an injured bird and it just hits him the similarity between this helpless bird and himself. both in situations they’re unable to fly away from. so when he has the opportunity to leave for school he decides that he wants to be a vet bc animals don’t have the agency to decide to change their lives, but eddie can make them healthy and strong (and maybe he can make himself healthy and strong too). it isn’t until he meets mike though that he makes the connection between the pets he’s being taught to care for and the animals on his plate.
richie meets this really great guy, ben hanscom, around the same time. ben is studying architecture and has been getting really into sustainability and how to build for the future! ben and richie meet at this sustainability talk their school is hosting and really hit it off. after, richie is like do u smoke weed and ben who’s never had a weed in his life is like oh yeah ofc so they go get blasted in richie’s car where he just drops truth bomb after truth bomb abt sustainability and how animal agriculture has to fall for there to even be a future. poor ben who’s high for the first time in his life is just like oh my god oh my god oh my god but i want some doritos RN and richie is like i have a family size bag of sweet chili doritos in my dorm which are vegan. ben almost cries. and that’s the start of ben going vegan! it’s nice to have an experienced vegan (and snacker) to show you the ropes!
fast forward to graduation, mike and richie get engaged, mike buys the family farm, hires eddie as an on-site veterinarian and ben as a consultant (and hands on, bc it’s ben) for the redesign of the farm.
beverly rogan has a small clothing business in chicago. her husband tom works the finances and she makes the clothes. it’s nice for what it is, although her friend kay tells her she could have more than a shitty husband that controls her life and business. bev and tom go to derry for a funeral and while there happen upon this adorable little store. it’s got recycled fashion, art, tools. bev suggests starting their own sustainable fashion line bc this is awesome and worthwhile and tom is like lol fuck you no that’s not the way we’re going to do things. they leave the store but bev Remembers. she goes back by herself and meets mike hanlon, one of the owners. she tells him how she’s a fashion designer but never thought abt not using animal products. they talk for a long time and mike invites her to dinner at the farm. mike introduces her to his fiancé who she Immediately loves bc he’s such a weird guy, and to some cows. mike shares his own story about how all this came about and the importance of fighting for freedom for everyone and bev just, breaks down just cannot get it together crying bc holy SHIT there’s a whole world that she never knew about that alines with this missing piece in her heart. and mike let’s her cry on his shoulder for as long as she needs to and tells her that she’s welcome anytime.
she leaves tom shortly after, shows up at lucky seven sanctuary’s door, and never looks back. she’s got a home and a family and a part time job in the store. when she isn’t helping on the farm, she’s creating designs for new sustainable clothing lines made by beverly Marsh.
stanley uris has been an accountant for one whole year out of college and it’s fine, but he’s got no connection to the work, something just doesn’t feel right about his life. he’s always been a confident, decisive guy and so this new feeling of being adrift kind of makes him lose it. so he quits his job and pursues his hobby which is nature photography (birds). he travels all over and starts learning abt conservation bc a lot of the birds he wants to photograph are dwindling in numbers bc their homes are being excavated for, and this is the thing that really sends him over the edge, animal agriculture. and like. that’s Not Right. it Should be empirically impossible for one business to be so powerful. so he makes the change to veganism about a year into his new nomadic lifestyle. so he actually meets mike in a photography facebook group and they hit it off and are pen pals for awhile. stan happens to start thinking about settling down when mike tells him they have to hire an accountant bc the farm and their business ventures have grown so much and stan is like well shit, i’m an accountant! so he goes out there and meets everyone and gets the lowdown and just absolutely falls in love with all of it and the next thing everyone knows, he’s moved in.
eventually bill hears about lucky seven sanctuary and he’s like holy shit i grew up with those guys! i can’t believe they really did it! and so they reconnect and they all live happily ever after!
the wedding date - chapter 4
part 1 | part 2 | part 3
Percy piled his plate high with pancakes and blueberries. Annabeth went for fruit, scones, and bacon. The burden of saying hi and meeting people was eased with the crutch of having full mouths.
These were her old camp buddies, her close friends, but she could feel her social meter already running out. The constant circuit of greetings and small talk and introducing Percy had left her emotionally spent, but Percy was killing it. He was charming and goofy and greeted everyone so warmly. Annabeth was grateful he was here.
After they had chatted with Katie Gardener, her old fellow Cabin Leader, Percy excused himself to get more coffee. “Do you want me to get you anything?”
Annabeth shook her head, “No thanks. I’m actually gonna take a breather.” She motioned over to an alcove of the dining pavilion that was less crowded.
“Are you okay? We can leave,” Percy said, genuine worry in his eyes.
She flashed him a grateful smile, “Yes, I’m fine really. Just need a second. Go get your coffee.” She watched him walk over to the beverage table and didn’t miss how almost everyone’s eyes followed him.
She felt bare now without his hand on her back supporting her, physically and emotionally.
“Is that the elusive Annabeth Chase?”
Annabeth whirled around and was suddenly in a bear hug, literally. Her face was full of Hazel’s caramel curls and a huge mass of muscle, but when she saw her dearest friends, Frank and Hazel, she was beamed. “How are you guys!” She asked, not letting go of either of her friends’ arms.
“We’d be better visited us once in a while,” Hazel retorted, but there was love in her tone. She wore a yellow sundress that matched Frank’s tie. Theypulled off matchy-matchy without looking like they were trying too hard.
“Oh you know I’ve been meaning to, but—”
“We know, we know, you have work. Annabeth Chase the famous architect needs to be here to redesign the Manhattan skyline,” Frank teased.
“I—” Annabeth smiled, sheepishly, “Yeah, I do have work.”
“We know, and we’re so proud of you,” Hazel said, squeezing her arm, “But justoneweekend, fly out to New Rome. We’d love to see you more often.”
“I’ll try, Hazel,” and even though Annabeth had said that before so many times to Piper and Jason, the way Hazel and Frank looked her made her really mean it.
“And Annabeth, I heard from a little birdy that you brought a date?” Hazel teased, grinning at her. Annabeth watched Hazel and Frank’s gaze shift to Percy across the room, chatting to one of Jason’s random old relatives at the coffee table, signaling Piper had fully briefed them on Percy already.
“I did,” Annabeth said, challenginly.
“Why didn’t you tell us? Piper said she didn’t even know until you asked for a plus one like a month ago!”
Annabeth shrugged, “It all just happened, um, so fast.” She wasn’t lying. “I’m not sure if it was the right thing to bring him, actually. I brought a newcomer to camp, and now everyone’s staring at him.”
“Wrong, Annabeth,” Frank said, “Everyone’s staring because he’s so attractive.” Hazel’s expression read, he ain’t wrong.
“Oh,” Annabeth bit her lip, “That’s good, I guess?” It was better they were staring at him for that rather than staring at him for being some random stranger she bought to an intimate wedding. She wanted the subject of Percy off from Hazel and Frank. “By the way, did you guys, um, fly in with Luke?”
Hazel and Frank exchanged glances, warily. Annabeth noticed. “No, he flew in with Thalia this morning,” Hazel replied, “but he’s here. Around.”
Gratefully, Annabeth was saved from having to respond by superman. “Hazel, Frank!” Jason called from across the pavilion, waving them over.
“Whelp, Groomzilla beckons,” Hazel muttered, tugging her boyfriend towards Jason, “Can’t wait for you to introduce us to Percy later!”
As Hazel and Frank left her alone with her plate of now cold bacon, the reality of the situation dawned on Annabeth. She hiredand actor to come be her date at a wedding with her closest friends, her family. These people knew her better than anyone, even better than her roommate.  They would definitely see right through her whole façade. She had brought Percy so she wouldn’t face Luke as some sad, single spinster, but it was already paying off greeting everyone and having someone at her back.
“Annabeth. Hello? Annabeth?”
Annabeth snapped out of her reverie. “Oh my gods, Thalia!” She threw her arms around the dark-haired girl in front of her. If anyone would see through her today, it was her oldest friend.
“What were you just thinking about? You looked so stress,” Thalia said, swiping a piece of bacon off Annabeth’s plate. She wore tight black dress that fell to mid-calf and reminded Annabeth of a pin-up girl. Her short black hair had new purple streaks from the last time she saw her.
“You know, just all this wedding stuff,” Annabeth recovered. “How you’ve been?”
“Busy,” Thalia bit off another piece of bacon, “Aren’t we all? But we all needed this weekend, I think. We need this time to be together. What about you, Annie? How you’ve been since the last time I saw you?”
Annabeth smiled, “I’m happy we’re all together too. I’m still recovering from you moving away. I have approximately one friend in the city now. You’re all over in California. So many of you moved out to New Rome these past few years. I was just talking to Hazel and Frank, I need to come out and see your new place. Did you end up buying that yellow couch?”
“No, I couldn’t haggle the price down. And also…well, actually, well, I moved again.”
“Thalia, what! You just moved across the country at the beginning of the year, and you’ve moved again? It’s only been like six months.”
“Yeah, but the commute to The Hunt was just so long, and there was a vacancy in, um, Luke’s building. So I moved to an apartment there.”
“Oh,” Annabeth could tell Thalia was studying her face for her reaction. She had to shift gears, “How is the new job?”
“It’s amazing,” Thalia said, “Moving all over again was worth it for this job. My boss, Artemis, is so cool. I love the company so much. It’s an all-female staff, and we go on this awesome company camping trips.”
“That’s fantastic!”
“Enough about me. Now tell me about you since I last saw you.”
“Well, I submitted my blueprints for the—”
“Not about work, Annabeth. You always talk about work. Tell me about your life! What are the new bars you’re going to? Who do you go out with now? Are you going out with anyone right now?”
“Well—”
“Oh my gods, actually. There’s the cutest guy I’ve ever seen here today. I don’t recognize him from camp, maybe he’s one of Jason’s cousins? But he’s so hot, and I think he’d be perfect for you—oh my gods, he’s walking over here right now.”
Percy returned from the coffee bar and kissed Annabeth on the cheek, “Got you a coffee, babe. Looked like you needed one. Hi, I’m Percy.” He stuck out his hand, smoothly transitioning to greeting Thalia.
Thalia gaped, but recovered quickly in true Thalia-fashion, “Oh, hey, I’m Thalia. Annabeth’s best and oldest friend. You’ve probably heard all about me already.”
Percy grinned, “Nice to meet you, Thalia. Of course I have. I’m Annabeth’s best and current boyfriend.” Damn, Annabeth thought. Percy was so smooth, she actually had never mentioned Thalia, but Percy lied so well that she believed that she had told him all about her.
Thalia grinned, “Oh, boyfriend.‘Beth didn’t mention the B-word. How long have you guys been dating?”
“-One month-“ “-Just a couple weeks-“
Annabeth paused, squeezing Percy’s arm, “We start counting from different times, but, um, we met about a month ago.”
Thalia raised an eyebrow, “Whirlwind romance?”
“Exactly.”
“Are you in the wedding party also?” Percy asked.
“I’d kill Jason if I wasn’t,” Thalia replied.
“Thalia is Jason’s sister,” Annabeth explained. Percy nodded.
“Have you met everyone already, Percy?”
“Almost,” Annabeth responded for him, “Still a couple people we haven’t gotten the chance to talk to. Like Reyna and Leo, they’ve been too busy running around doing Best Man and Maid of Honor stuff.”
“Right,” Thalia said, chugging the rest of her mimosa, “I won’t hog you two from the masses. Nice meeting you, Percy.”
Percy let out a whistle as Thalia walked away, “Wow, she has a, er, strong personality.”
Annabeth nodded, “Yep, that’s Thals for you. She’s one of my best friends. We were so close growing up. Her, me, and…” Annabeth coughed. “Any, there are still a couple people we need to say hi to. They’re over there.”
Annabeth pointed over to where two people were yelling at a catering waiter, one wiry man with curly dark hair wearing suspenders and a tall, dark haired beauty in a striking purple wrap dress, “That’s Reyna, the best man, and Leo, the maid of honor.”
“You mean the other way around?”
“Actually, I don’t. Reyna is Jason’s best friend and Leo threw a fit until Piper made him her maid of honor.” Percy nodded as Annabeth pointed them out in the crowd. “That buff Asian guy I was talking to is Frank, he’s another groomsman. That girl standing next to him is Hazel, she’s another bridesmaid with me. Do you see that goth looking kid standing by the muffins? Standing next to that blond guy? That’s Nico and his boyfriend. Dakota is another groomsman, but I think I heard that he couldn’t fly in until the rehearsal dinner. And you just met Thalia. The last  bridesmaid is Piper’s sister, Drew.”
“Okay, there’s Leo, you, Hazel, and Thalia. And there’s Reyna, Frank, Nico, Dakota and who’s the last groomsman—” Percy asked, counting off on his fingers. He lost count when,
“Annabeth!”
“Leo!” Annabeth grinned, embracing her friend, “Long time no see, how are you—”
“Great, we’re doing pictures of the wedding party over by the front of the room in T-minus forty five seconds, so get over there, princess,” and then Leo was gone.
Annabeth shook her head, “That’s Leo for you.” She and Percy walked over to where the rest of the wedding party was gathering, and Leo was animatedly directing.
“Okay, let’s do Piper and her bridal bitches first, and then we’ll do Jason and his guapo groomsmen next.” Leo said, ushering people towards the front and pushing people away.
Percy fell back behind the photographer Annabeth let herself be positioned with the other bridesmaids.
“Which ones yours?” asked a handsome, blond, tan guy standing next to Percy behind the photographer.
“Oh, sorry, what?”
“I’m Nico’s boyfriend. That groomsman who looks like he’d rather be digging graves than be here right now?”
“Oh, I’m Annabeth’s boyfriend. My name’s Percy.”
“Will Solace. Nice to meet you.”
A woman with long, wavy auburn hair in a white dress joined their conversation, “And I’m Calypso. Leo’s lucky date,” She rolled her eyes when she said it. “Welcome to the wedding dates club, Percy.”
Will grinned, “Our job is to make sure oursignificant others don’t go crazy, so Piper and Jason don’t go crazy.”
As if on cue, Leo appeared and Calypso was already handing him his phone before he even opened his mouth, “You left it on the table this morning.”
Leo grinned, kissing her on the cheek, “Thanks, babe.” He went to go hand his phone to the photographer as well.
As the groomsman gathered, Will called over his shoulder, “Nico, your tie is crooked.”
Percy felt out of place so he just shot Annabeth two supportive thumbs up. She smiled gratefully.
The bridesmaids picture seemed to be taking longer than necessary because of dark haired girl in the front who was flirting with the photographer. From process of elimination, Percy assumed it was Piper’s sister, Drew.
Will muttered from next to Percy, “Holy Hephaestus, she’s trashed.”
Calypso giggled, “I saw her downing an entire tray of mimosas. They weren’t even that strong!”
“Being a wedding date is so fun,” Will said, “You just get to witness all the drama unfolding without being a part of it. But then you have to hear them all bitch about it later at night.”
Calypso handed Percy and Will fresh mimosas, “That’s why we drink up, boys. We’ll be standing on the sidelines watching them take pictures all weekend, might as well have fun.”
Percy took the drink and cheers them, “I don’t mind.”
After Annabeth’s cheeks hurt from smiling for so long and she saw that Percy was occupied with Will and Calypso, she slipped away from the pavilion for some fresh air. She hadn’t seen Luke yet with the whole wedding party gathered, and her nerves were getting tauter and tauter with every second she braced herself to see his face.
“Annabeth, hey.”
Snap.She knew that voice anywhere. Once upon a time, that voice could have roused her out of a coma. She felt like she was going to be sick. She turned on her heel to leave, but his hand caught her wrist. “Luke,” she choked out, “let go of me.”
Luke dropped her arm, and stepped close, “Come on, Annabeth.” His sandy hair was shorter than the last time she saw him. He probably cut it recently for the wedding. His grown out his facial hair was new from the last time she saw him, almost a year ago. Annabeth had always requested he didn’t do. She liked a clean shave. He looked older, more rugged. More handsome.
Annabeth didn’t want to, but she couldn’t help but study everything about him. She recognized every article of clothing he was wearing. She knew that navy blue suit was his favorite one to wear because it hugged his biceps and made him look toned. She knew he got that white polo from a sale from their favorite outlet mall they went to one of the weekends right before they broke up. She had bought him those boat shoes as a joke because they were so preppy, but he actually pulled them off.
“What, Luke?” she sighed. She hadn’t expected seeing Luke Castellan would be this hard.
“Can’t we be civil, Annabeth? Come on, it’s been almost been a year. Can’t we put this aside? For Piper and Jason?”
“Put this aside? What? Our history? Our whole relationship? A couple months, and I’m not supposed to be upset anymore?” Annabeth hadn’t seen him or contacted him in anyway since the day they broke up, and it was all coming out now. She realized she’d never gotten the words out, she’d never had time to grieve.
“Annabeth, please,” Luke continued with a steady voice. They were far away enough from the pavilion that no one would be able to hear them arguing, but he looked weary still.
“We were engaged, Luke. We were in the middle of planning our own wedding. And you left me. I can’t just ‘put it aside,” Annabeth spat out.
“I didn’t leave you, Annabeth. Don’t twist things. You knew that job at Kronos Corporations was all I’d ever wanted, all I’d worked for. I was going to be promoted, and you wanted me to choose between you and my career?”
“I wanted you to compromise! We had our life in New York. What about my job? We had a good life and you wanted us to uproot everything. And the reason I felt to goddamn stupidthe day you left without me was the day,” Annabeth’s voice caught. She could feel tears pricking in her eyes, “the day I was going to tell you that I was going to go with you.”
Luke looked pained, “Annabeth.” He reached for her.
“Stop. I-I’m here with someone.”
Luke’s arms grasped for her waist, “Annie, you don’t have to lie to me.”
Annabeth shied away, “I’m not.”
“Annabeth?” Percy appeared and stepped between the two, smoothly putting a barrier between her and Luke. He stuck out his hand, “Hey, I’m Percy, Annabeth’s boyfriend. You are?” She noticed his greeting lacked the warmth he had greeted all of her other friends with. Percy’s arm settled back around her waist, and she was surprised by how natural and comforted she felt with his arm on her waist.
Luke eyed Percy’s hand, his facial expression hardening. He shook Percy’s hand, “Luke Castellan. Old friend.” The handshake was typical enough, but Annabeth could tell from the veins on their forearms that it was quite the firm one.
“Well, I think they’re going to make some announcements now so we should head back. Shall we, Annabeth?” Percy said, already steering her away.
When they arrived back at the pavilion, Piper and Jason stood at the front of the room with the drunk girl from earlier. Drew was tapping on the mic loudly.
“Hi, everyone!” Everyone in the crowd jolted from the mic feedback, “Whoops, sorry,” Drew said, yanking the mic away from the speaker. Percy and Annabeth chose a spot towards the front next to Hazel and Frank.
“Welcome everyone! I’d like to say a few words for my beautiful sister who makes an even beautiful-er bride,” Drew giggled. She ironically still had a mimosa in her hand. “This day is so special for her and my soon-to-be half-brother-in-law Jason, but also for us former campers. Camp Half-Blood is home for all of us.” Drew spread her arms like Moses parting the Red Sea. “We get to share this special event and be reunited with everyone after so many years.” Drew slurred, “This reunion and celebration would’ve happened much sooner at the supposed-to-be wedding of the century last year, but we all know what happened. Actually, do we all know what happened—”
Annabeth’s stomach dropped, and Frank and Hazel’s face probably mirrored everyone else’s in the room as Drew made her speech, shock and horror. Annabeth turned away, about to make a break for it, but Percy surged forward, tripping over wires and grabbing the mic from Drew.
“Hey!” she protested.
“Um, hi,” Percy said into the mic, “I’m Percy. I, er, didn’t go to camp here. I only met Piper and Jason this morning, but after just five minutes of talking to them, they, er, showed me what love truly is. I’d like to propose a toast. To Piper and Jason!” Percy raised his empty hand.
The guests echoed, “To Piper and Jason!”
Jason walked over, sheepishly, and took the mic from Percy, “Wow, um, that was beautiful. Thank you, Drew. And Percy. I hope everyone had a lot a eat, we still have plenty of food left. Chiron has happily set up camp activities for us today. So after this, everyone go have fun!”
Percy walked back to Annabeth, ignoring the stares directed at him and her. He took her arm, steering her back towards Cabin 3. He wasn’t sure if that’s where they were supposed to be headed, but she was silent.
As they approached the valley of cabins Annabeth turned to him, “Thank you. For, um, intervening back there. I don’t know what Drew was thinking…”
“You’re welcome. I, um, I didn’t know that you had been engaged.”
“Yeah, we—”
“You don’t have to tell me.”
“I want to,” Annabeth said, “You deserve to know why you’re here.” The pavilion crowd had dispersed and most of the guests were headed straight towards camp activities so luckily, they were alone by the cabins.
“Luke and I started camp around the same time. He was a lot older, but he still hung out with me. We grew up together. I had a huge crush on him, but I thought he just thought of me as like a kid sister. He was my best friend. When we were older, we both knew the feelings were kind of there, but nothing ever happened until I came back from college. He was working in the city, and we started dating. I moved in with him. I think everyone knew we would end up together one day, so none of our friends were surprised when we got engaged only a year after we started dating. I’ve known him basically my whole life. Even though I was only twenty-four, he was thirty-one already. I was finally getting some of the bigger projects at my firm, we were in the middle of planning our wedding. It was supposed to be a June wedding at this exact time last year.
“Then, a couple months before our wedding, he got a call from this company he’s been trying to get involved with for years. They wanted him, finally, and it would be a huge promotion from his position at his dad’s shipping company. Except their headquarters is in San Francisco. Luke wanted to postpone the wedding so we could relocate to California. And I didn’t want to leave New York. I was finally getting traction as an architect, and we had a life, something permanent here and he wanted to throw it all away.”
Annabeth sat down on the bench outside of Cabin 3, almost like the weight of the story was too much for her stand.
“It was a huge fight. I ended up leaving and packing a bag and crashing on Thalia’s couch. After days of moping, I went back to our apartment, fully intending on making up with him and agreeing to move to California, but he was gone. Our apartment was all packed up and he was in a U-Haul with half of our things. The worst part was I’d already mailed out our save-the-dates,” she muttered, bitterly.
“This was the first time I saw him, well the first time I saw basically everyone since we called off the wedding. I almost didn’t come, but I couldn’t do that to Piper and Jason. So that’s why I hired you,” she trailed off, looking at Percy.
Percy held out his hand to her, “I respect what you’re doing. He’s an asshole, and you shouldn’t have to face him alone. I’m glad I’m here.”
Annabeth took his hand, standing up. He was looking at her so kindly and sincerely with those beautiful green eyes. He didn’t release her from his grasp. They were so close. If Annabeth tilter her chin forward, they’d be kissing.
When his lips were about to brush hers, she breathed, “I don’t know if you’re okay with anything physical.”
“I’m an actor, Annabeth, I kiss in shows all the time. But it’ll cost you, that’ll be another $500.”
Annabeth blinked, pulling away from him and cracking a smile, “I hope it won’t resort to that, but good to know you’re prepared.”  She opened the door and slipped into Cabin 3.
Missed Chances - Masterpage
Tumblr media
Bucky woke up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee, a smile on his lips and his eyes still closed. He listened to you move around the room while you were getting ready for work.
Your studio apartment was small and not ideally situated, but it was home. You had turned the open kitchen into an eat-in kitchen thanks to a simple breakfast bar. To save space, you had bought a Murphy bed and used the decorative fireplace as a mini library.
Bucky let out a content sigh and stretched out starfish style. He grinned lazily at you, the sheet tangled around his waist.
You rounded the counter and crossed the living room. He greeted you with a soft ‘hey you’ and watched you take a seat on the edge of the bed, your hands wrapped around a cup of coffee.
“I hope this wasn’t the last K-cup,” he slurred, then groaned when you made an apologetic grimace. “I need coffee.”
You rolled your eyes while brushing his hair back from his forehead. He pouted for a second before he pushed himself into a sitting position and kissed you. He tried to pull you down onto the mattress with him, but you were already late for work.
“I gotta go,” you mumbled against his lips. He made a sound of protest. “Seriously, if I’m late again, Natasha’s gonna fire me.”
You had barely had enough time to place the mug of coffee down on the floor before Bucky wrapped his arms around you and flipped you both over until he was on top. You let out a giggling shriek and tried to push him off.
He kissed you again, slowly, tenderly. You really wanted to call in sick and stay in bed with him, but that was a luxury you couldn’t afford. Bucky pulled back enough to playfully rub his nose against yours.
“You know,” you spoke, “it’s amazing how you just don’t care about morning breath when you’ve been with someone for ages.”
He dropped his head and sighed, a hint of a smile curling his lips. “We were having a moment.”
“I know, sorry, I really have to go.”
You gave him a quick kiss and climbed over him to get out of bed. You put your coat and your shoes on and turned to him.
“Tell you what, you can keep the last cup of coffee. I’ll grab something on the way to the office.”
“Yesss!” he beamed, pumping his fist in the air in a victory gesture.
You grabbed your bags and keys from the counter and blew him a kiss before you left.
It took you over half an hour to reach Hearst Tower, which housed some of the world’s most famous magazine publishing companies. After receiving your master’s degree in journalism, you had applied to work as an editorial assistant for a fairly new magazine called Honeysuckle.
The competition was tough and your numbers were not good. Your editor-in-chief even used the word redesign, which, in this industry, was a death sentence.
This meant that you had to work longer hours to get the results the company needed. You didn’t mind since Bucky never came home until well after eleven.
Meeting deadlines was always challenging and you thrived on that adrenaline rush like a junkie.
You barged into the tower and passed through security before you took the elevator up to the offices.  As you exited the elevator, the usual office noises greeted you and you tried to make yourself as small as possible while you walked to your desk.
The cubicles stretched all the way down the open-plan office with no pillars or walls to isolate you. There were offices on each side of the room; one for the editor-in-chief, an art room, a fashion closet and a few others for the senior editors.
You had just draped your coat over your chair when someone sneaked up behind you and whispered in your ear.
“Romanoff’s looking for you,” your cubicle mate said, startling you in the process.
“Jesus, Scott, you’re gonna give me a heart attack!” you replied, placing a hand over your racing heart.
You leaned back in your chair and watched him take a few folders from his desk before he walked away. He turned and walked backward for a moment, meeting your eyes when he said, “FYI she looked pissed.”
“Yeah, what else is new?” you mumbled to yourself.
At this moment, the features editor, Natasha Romanoff, exited her office and looked over the sea of cubicles until she saw you. Her high heels made no sound on the carpeted floor as she approached your desk. Without slowing down, she asked you to follow her.
“Ms Romanoff, I-”
“You’re not in trouble,” she cut you off, casting you a sideways glance. “Nick wants to see you.”
You managed a weak smile and tried to look nonchalant. An impromptu meeting with the editor-in-chief wasn’t a great way to start your day.
Natasha opened the door and motioned you inside. Nick Fury was enjoying the view of the New York City skyline while lounging in his leather desk chair. He swivelled his chair in your direction and greeted you by name.
He waved you to a chair in front of his desk while Natasha stood next to his desk, looking as stoic as ever.
“Do you remember last week’s meeting,” he said, resting his forearms on his desk.
Of course you remembered that meeting. He basically spent two hours telling everyone that unless someone came up with a brilliant idea to bring up the numbers, you’d all lose your jobs.
He gave you a small smile when you replied in the affirmative.
“Here at Honeysuckle, we want our reader to feel like they matter. We want them to close the magazine with a smile on their faces, we want them to feel good about themselves.”
He took a moment before continuing, his expression thoughtful.  “I’ve read your proposition and you’re right, this magazine has lost its true identity.”
Before you worked for them, Honeysuckle was one of your favourite magazines. You didn’t particularly enjoy reading fashion magazines because they all had the same articles: a new diet each month and strange relationship advice.
But Honeysuckle was different. They were more inclusive than any other magazines, choosing models for their talent rather than their gender, age, body type, skin colour or religious preference.
Somehow, it changed over time. They continued to promote diversity, but their models became more sombre and less joyful. The colour scheme changed, too; it went from soft greens, whites and yellows to bold colours.
You knew they were selling you a fantasy, but it wasn’t important as long as they encouraged women to focus on their inner beauty. You had cancelled your subscription after the senior editors gave you your first diet story.
“Now,” Nick said with a hopeful smile, “it’s time for Honeysuckle to change. I want us to get back to the roots of our business. Will you help me?”
You sat up straight. “Of course, sir!”
“I’m glad to hear that,” he said with a nod. “I want to hear your ideas.”
Emboldened by his response, you sat on the edge of your seat. You were also relieved that he wasn’t going to fire you for being late.
“I think we should put life back into the magazine!” you exclaimed, gripping the edge of the desk. “We should talk about real women. Women who are smart and pretty and happy to be who they are.”
Nick studied you while he rested his chin on his fist. “You’re saying we should focus on the so-called ‘normal’ women, uh.”
“It’s not an insult,” you quickly replied. “Women are complex and beautiful; we all have different passions, different interests, but a lot of us have a job, we go on dates, we hang out with friends, and all that. We should talk about these women. We should talk about us.”
“I agree,” Nick replied after throwing a quick glance at Natasha. “I have a question for you. Are you a normal woman?”
You shrugged. “Yes, I think I am.”
Nick leaned forward on the desk and laced his fingers in front of him. “So if we wanted to talk about you,” he paused, “you wouldn’t have a problem with that, would you?”
You weren’t sure what he meant by that. Did he just say he wanted to write an article about you?
“I’m not sure I understand, sir.”
He stared at you with a strange expression before he reached sideways and opened a drawer of his desk. His hand fumbled for something in it, then he slammed it on the table.
It was a gossip magazine with Steve Rogers on the cover. You were standing in front of him, and even though Bucky wasn’t on the photo, you could see his arm around your waist. Paparazzi must have followed Steve when he ran into you and Bucky in front of the restaurant.
“Oh, god,” you whispered as you picked up the magazine.
“You never mentioned you were friends with Rogers,” Natasha said, her arms crossed over her chest. “He isn’t a random celebrity. He’s one of the most influential people in the world and he happens to be a fashion designer.”
“I don’t really know him,” you sighed, throwing the magazine back on the table. “We used to be friends when we were kids, but we grew apart. I ran into him the other night when I was out with my fiancé.”
“I’m not going to beat around the bush,” Nick said, straightening his posture. “Rogers is the kind of celebrity we need to bring up our numbers.”
“We also need an emotional story to attract more readers,” Natasha chimed in.
You sank into your seat, suddenly nervous. She sat cross-legged on Nick’s desk, ready to present her new idea.
“We want you to share your wedding journey with our readers.”
You looked at her with wide eyes. “I’m sorry, what?”
Unfazed, Natasha continued, “Wedding TV shows are extremely popular, it sells. This might be the boost we need. Our readers will follow you through every step of the way. Including, and that will be the climax of the series, how your former childhood friend created your own wedding dress.”
You held back a laugh. “Steve Rogers will never agree to do that.”
“He will,” Natasha replied in a tone that made it sound like she had already thought this through. “The dress’ a way for us to get noticed, to join the big league. Imagine this: superstar Steve Rogers designs a glamorous wedding dress for his long-lost friend. And this long-lost friend is you, a normal girl.”
They gave you a minute to let that sink in, but it wasn’t enough. You had no idea what to say. It was insane. Organising a wedding was complicated enough and you didn’t want to share everything with potentially millions of people.
Sensing your hesitancy, Nick tried to soften the blow. “If you accept, we’ll help you financially with your wedding. In addition, if our numbers improve, I’ll promote Natasha to associate editor. This means, you’ll be our new features editor.”
“And if I refuse?”
Nick let out a small sigh. “You’re allowed to say no, and if you do, we won’t hold it against you. But quite frankly, this is the deal of a lifetime. People would kill for that.”
He was right, but it didn’t change the fact that you had to talk to Bucky. It wasn’t just your wedding, it was his, too.
You were also iffy about working with Steve, should he accept their offer. Seeing him again after all this time brought back bittersweet memories.
The last time you had seen him before that, Steve had kissed you passionately one night and disappeared the next day.
“It’s a generous offer,” you agreed, choosing your words carefully. “I think I should talk to my fiancé first.”
“Absolutely!” Nick beamed, shooting Natasha a wide smile. “You and your guy should do some thinking over the weekend.”
You were visibly shaken when you returned to your desk after that bizarre meeting with your boss. You sat there for a moment just staring into space.
“So?” Scott rolled his chair closer to you. “Did you get fired?”
You shook your head. “They want to pay for my wedding and give me a promotion.”
Scott stared at you, his eyes blinking in shock. He opened his mouth like he was going to say something, then thought better of it and rolled back to his desk. For the first time since you’d started working with him, Scott Lang was speechless...
*
Steve called in sick for the second time that week. To his relief, Brock texted back that he’d take care of everything.
He opened every cupboard, every cabinet door searching for something other than fruits and vegetables.
After a few minutes, he found a cupboard full of sugary snacks; including boxes of Lucky Charms and Cap'n Crunch, Hersey bars and cookies, Twizzlers, Starburst Jelly Beans and a huge box of Cracker Jacks.
He carried everything into the living room and settled down on the white sofa, ready to drown his sorrows in sweets.
Steve was famous, rich, talented, loved by everyone and he lived in an incredible apartment, but there was something missing. He was a womanizer, an addict, a liar. He lived a frivolous, pointless life and he wanted to know how he ended up so messed up.
He called at home to talk to his mom, but the number had been disconnected. He figured that she’d changed her number in the last seventeen years.
He couldn’t even talk to you or Bucky because he didn’t have your numbers and because you were no longer friends. It hurt to know that he had cut all ties with his best friends –or maybe his friends cut ties with him... he honestly had no idea.
The people he loved the most were gone and Steve might have looked like an adult, but he was just a kid.
“Ma’am,” he asked the A.I. “Is SpongeBob still a thing?”
It was an odd request and it took F.R.I.D.A.Y. a few seconds to react. He only watched the sports channels, but nonetheless the A.I. turned on the television and Steve relaxed into the cushions when the familiar pirate appeared.
“Steve,” F.R.I.D.A.Y interrupted him after an hour. “Ms Carter is in the lobby.”
Steve let out a grunt. “I don’t know her. Tell her to leave, I want to be alone.”
“She’s already in the elevator.”
Annoyed, he left the blanket on the sofa and padded to the front door. He didn’t want to see anyone, he wanted to be left alone with his junk food and forget everything.
When he swung the door open, he found a woman in a dark blue suit standing there. She was tall, had dark curly hair and wide, expressive eyes.
She glanced at him, raising one perfectly arched eyebrow when she saw his dirty pyjamas, and Steve shuffled his feet as he began to feel self-conscious. She was sophisticated and he clearly wasn’t.
“Goodness, Steve, it’s past two, what are you doing in your pyjamas?” she asked, but before he could say anything she raised her hand to stop him. “You know what, I don’t want to know. I’m late, you were supposed to pick her up this morning.”
Upon seeing the confused look on his face, she began to tap her foot impatiently.
“You fought me for joint custody, now you stick to our schedule,” she continued. “I'm not at your beck and call.”
The sound of someone repeatedly hitting the elevator button caught her attention. She turned around and asked the little girl standing by the elevator to stop fiddling with the button.
Panic rose in Steve’s chest. He steadied himself against the door frame as he locked eyes with a little girl with messy dark blonde curls. Her face lit up when she saw him, a toothy grin spread across her face.
She was halfway across the corridor, tottering towards him on unsteady legs, her arms outstretched. She crashed into his legs and wrapped her small arms around him before she glanced up at him, her big hazel eyes beaming.
“Dada!”
