Watching Fionna and Cake made me think of all the memories of watching Adventure Time as it came out. These bastards have no idea. My entire personality changed after this episode. I have not recovered.

Between all the little (and big) hints that Fionna and Cake are truly a product of Simon psyche, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone point this yet:
Tumblr media
'STOP ACTING CRAZY'
Said almost exactly the same cadence and tone as Marceline said to Ice King in "I Remember You"

Wherever you are I wish you well with all my heart. I hope life is kind and you often smile. Yes, I think of you. I've never forgotten. What I have taken into my soul remains in my soul and the soul is eternal. So here you are, never gone from me, and though the years pass, I still sit by the fire and remember you as I hold my cup of coffee and look at the flames. Always moments of my life trigger memories of you, and I think of you, of all we lived, of where you are now, without me, of how many more years I will live always carrying your memory. It is a sense of gratitude mixed with melancholy that always overtakes me when thoughts of you fall as the rain pours. Yes, you are with me always, like I promised you would be. I have kept my promise. I wonder if you have kept yours, and perhaps I will never know, but I am content to know I have kept mine.

The thing I like most about Adventure Time is the pacing, it's a lot slower than shows today, and really fleshes out every tiny character and detail.
There was so much room for Adventure Time to keep going, but it got cut short by Cartoon Network.
If we went on for a few more seasons we could've gotten good endings for a lot of the character arcs instead of bitter lessons.
Betty could've found a safe way to bring Simon and Margles back (and AGGG I wish we got more of King Man and his wifeeee). Simon would actually see (Alive!) Betty and they could TALK and FIX the problems with their relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Simon wasn't brought back on the final episode, we would've had normal AT episodes with him and Marcaline actually TALKING about their lives (Who wouldn't want an 'I Remember You' 2, Electric Boogaloo?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fern could've ended his curse without dying, or at least learn to accept himself. Fern and Jermaine brotherhood was RIGHT THERE for the taking, they're both overshadowed by their more popular counterpart and they're basically siblings by relation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marcaline and Princess Bubblegum would have some more time to become an official relationship, instead of the sudden kiss after PB gets slammed into the ground.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anything. With. The. Ice Thing. What the hell is it? What happened to Gunter and Oorgalorg for that matter? Why did it *fuse* with the crown? And is there anything more on his relationship with Turtle Princess? (How the hell did he even get her to marry him?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's so much more I could add to this list; Uncle Gumbald and PB, Finn and Minerva, Hudson Abadeer and Simon, that stretch of time where Simon was serving the Empress, Huntress Wizard and Finn
This isn't even MENTIONING smaller characters like Neptr, Lemongrab, LSP ect
I know more than half the stuff I said was covered in Obsidian or Fionna and Cake, but those pieces happen AFTER the important stuff, they're less story pieces and more 'loose end ties', and almost every episode is split with an entirely new main character, and/or setting
Luckily, most of the fandom creates art and stories to fill these gaps that AT left, and I'm very happy for it, but I wish that AT could've ran on for a few more seasons to really lock in ideas

suddenly i'm thinking about the implications that Marceline grew up ostracized, feared and rejected by other humans (she states that she felt she was a monster long before she became a vampire, and that implies regular contact with humans who would have been afraid of her before she started hunting vampires herself), and what this says about Simon himself, as well as his treatment of her reinforcing her own attitudes of respecting people regardless of how different they are
Simon saw her and only saw a little girl crying alone and immediately went to help her; she was OBVIOUSLY not human at a time when oozing zombie mutants were a serious threat, and he still beelined to make a stranger feel better even on top of his own issues
and THAT makes me think about how his kindness ultimately motivated her to be a far kinder person than she would have been otherwise, and how in time she met Finn and Jake and became THEIR friend, and after Finn and Jake learned of Ice King's past Finn went out of his way to be kind to him which in turn led to Ice King growing closer to people and finding stability which made it possible for Marceline to reconnect with him so he had a family again, and how a good deed circles round and round the world again and again

Hi Spade and everybody. I don’t know if you remember me I sent you the advice about focusing on the 🎃 messages rather than trying to figure out who sent them. This of course is the same for the other messages you receive, although I will confirm that 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 is not the one you call toe. I have seen some rumblings on that.
As I said previously, I am here to offer my assistance.
At this time, I encourage everyone to focus on the information that is presented to you. Be careful not to dissect every tiny detail as it leads to more questions than answers. If you look closely, you may discover that you have enough information available to you to find some of the answers you are looking for.
For instance, the information you have at this time will not give you answers to the watt, the why, or the how, but it may give you an answer as to the who.
That is all I will say for now, but I shall return when necessary.

Whenever I see Sonic with reddish whites in his eyes, all I ever see it this.
You're recent commission dredged this up, and now I'm inflicting it on you.
Ohh I remember seeing this EVERYWHERE like a decade ago, and I remember being on Deviantart when this got originally posted. It sits alongside Awkward Zombie in my brain, even though the two aren't related (any Smash-adjacent comics get lumped in with Awkward Zombie in my brain though).
And you know what? I was thinking about that old comic as well when I colored that commission. Kinda sits in my head forever, that old comic.

After all these years, ‘I Remember You’ is still one of the great highlights of Adventure Time Storytelling. And not just in the basic ‘what???? Silly children’s cartoon does something SAD??? HOLY SHIT MIND BLOWN’ way. But with the execution of that Something Sad. How it manages to pack so many Complex Emotions into just 11-minutes of television. And especially the way it utilizes the basic Adventure Time format for that purpose.
So Adventure Time is a Board-based show. Each episode has an outline pitched and written down by the writer’s room, and then this outline goes to a team of (usually) two Storyboard Artists who develop that simple outline into a full story. And with the show’s art-style deliberately eschewing staying perfectly ‘on-model’ in favor of having the animators take direct reference from how the different storyboarders draw the characters
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the show being generally extremely versatile in terms of themes and tone - AT has allowed a lot of their Storyboarders to really express themselves and their unique artistic vision as part of the Big Collaborative Narrative that is Adventure Time.
Now, the Boarders who worked on ‘I Remember You’ are Cole Sanchez and Rebecca Sugar. These two were a Storyboarding Duo from the start of S4 and until Sugar left the AT Crew during S5, and they always struck me as a curious combination. I think really from all of the individual boarders working on AT during that time, these two really are the closest to having like… Totally Opposite Artistic Sensibilities as boarders.
With Sugar favoring a style that is very loose and sketchy and also very rounded. Focusing on expressions and subtle body language and lighting. And being famous for going deep in depth into Big Moments of Emotional Catharsis
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Sanchez having a very clear art style that emphasizes strong silhouettes and clear lines that suggest flatness. Focusing more on major poses and the character’s positions in the space. And having just a really great eye for AT’s brand of silly humor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, I almost kinda suspect these two were paired together so they can each cover for the other’s “weakspots” in writing ‘Adventure Time’.
And there were a few episodes that did some really interesting stuff with this very contrasting pair - ‘Jake the Dog’ is another example. Giving most of the Farmworld scenes to Sugar and most of the Time Room scenes to Sanchez both plays to their personal strengths as storyboarders and helps to emphasize the strong emotional contrast between these two scenarios.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And ‘I Remember You’ is actually kinda unique among Adventure Time episodes cause… Most episodes will have the two boarders alternate between working on the episode throughout it. Like you’d have Boarder A draw a bit and then Boarder B and then Boarder A again… But “I Remember You” is divided between Sanchez and Sugar… basically perfectly in the middle.
So the entirety of the first half of the episode was boarded by Sanchez
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Until Ice King pushes Marceline and then leaves the room in shame.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, Sugar takes over.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, like, even if you don’t know anything about the Behind the Scenes of Adventure Time or who Cole Sanchez and Rebecca Sugar even are - the Shift is noticeable. The shift in tone, in narrative focus, in the subtleties in which the characters are drawn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The entire first half of the episode has this thin veneer of just being a Silly Goofy Ice King Episode. Sanchez’s talent for Adventure Time’s brand of comedy is on full display… but there is also this underlying feeling that Something is Happening just under the surface. And these hints of the Big Emotions of ‘IRY’ expressed via Sanchez’s kinda goofy style really create this balance between putting the audience into a false sense of security that this is just a Very Normal Episode about two characters hanging out and the Tension constantly brewing in the subtext.
And then it all comes to a blow.
Tumblr media
And then the Shift happens. And now we are in Sugar’s court.
Tumblr media
And this subtle shift in the artstyle and storytelling also coincide with Marceline finally openly expressing her feelings and the Reveal of Simon and Marcy's shared past. The episode changes focus from Ice King's silly antics to Marceline's feelings. Everything changes, everything in the first part of the episode gets recontextualized and... even on the most basic level, the episode is now Noticeably Different.
I would almost say that Sanchez’s half of the episode has Ice King define the tone, while Sugar’s half of the episode has Marceline define the tone. But more than anything it’s the catharsis. The reveal and release of those emotions that were building up so expertly through the Sanchez half of the episode. All of the Sugar-boarded scenes in this episode are really heartbreaking on their own, just through the tragedy of the story and Sugar’s expert knowledge of howto convey emotion in the visual medium - but it’s so enchanted by what came before it.
“I Remember You” is truly a great testament to how ‘Adventure Time’ could use every aspect of its medium to tell a great story in such a short time.

If there's one thing I've always been proud of Adventure Time for doing, it's connecting old events to new ones/flashbacks. For instance, in the newest episode of Fionna and Cake, remember the scene of Simon getting ready to debut the Enchiridion? Well, check out this scene in I Remember You.
Tumblr media
You can even see Betty in the passenger seat.

oh god i just remembered
i was just internally summarizing all the different worlds we see in Fionna and Cake, and how prominent Simon's/Ice King's relationship with Marceline was in them (IE, Winter King and his Ice Marcy, Farmworld Simon and Old Lady Marceline, Vampire World Marceline and her general lack of a Simon).
And then I got to the Jerry world.
Jerry world, we can assume, was identical to the Prime World in every way, until the Lich wished to end all life. That happened in "The Lich" and "Finn the Human" (because 2 parters be 2 parting).
Tell me, dear random Adventure Time fan on tumblr, what episode came out right before "The Lich?"
It was "I Remember You."
I don't think it's ever stated how much time passes between episodes, but one coming right after the other, it can't be much. A few weeks? Days? A month?
My point is, in that world Ice King/Simon and Marceline have that tearful reunion after so many years/centuries, and not long after it's ripped away (either they both die, or Marceline is spared cause she's undead, and is left alone).
The heartbreaking angst potential is outta this world.
I'm reminded, back when "I Remember You" first aired, the final shot cut abruptly to the Lich cackling in the promo for the next episode (this memory is confirmed by Adventure Time's "Nightmare Fuel" page on TV Tropes).
I doubt this was planned, but I can't help but feel a grim connection between that and this revelation.
Now please excuse me as I go shovel dirt in my mouth to cope with this.
