Maggie Stiefvater~Rant YA edition pt.2

I know, I know that I had to make a part about world-building but I’m pissed, I failed my exam I am at my friend house and it’s Fourth of July so I must do this.

Joseph Kavinsky.

First of all I don’t condemn his actions and yes, you can like a character but don’t agree with their actions.

My journey with The Dream Thieves was rocky, like really rocky. It was worse than The Raven Boys, I felt psychical pain while reading this one but there was only one good thing that help get through it AND IT WAS KAVINSKY.

From the first scene I liked him, I was intrigued by him and I was curious why Gangsey hates him so much. I mean what M*ggie give us are just rumours, that's when I asked myself “Why such a hate? What did he do to them?”.

And then the yo mama jokes, priceless by the way. Okay, maybe my sense humour sucks but let me tell you in polish translation “twoja stara” is golden I laughed for several minutes.

But the thing went down pretty quickly, like my face went from a happy to grim in a second and stayed that way while reading this, just to cry at the end. After that it was just anger and to this day I’m angry at M*ggie for what she did.

Lets start from beginning.

1. Kavinsky-Description

The first time we see Kavinsky it’s in the chapter 3 where we got rumours about him:

“Of course it was Joseph Kavinsky, fellow Aglionby Academy student and Henrietta’s most notorious recreational forger. Kavinsky’s infamous Mitsubishi Evo was a thing of boyish beauty, moon-white with a voracious black mouth of a grille and an immense splattered graphic of a knife on either side of the body. The Mitsubishi had just been released from a month-long stint in the police impound. The judge had told him that if he was caught racing again, they’d crush the Mitsubishi and make him watch, like they did to the rich punks’ street racers out in California. Rumor had it Kavinsky had laughed and told the judge he’d never get pulled over again. He probably wouldn’t. Rumor had it Kavinsky’s father had bought off Henrietta’s sheriff. To celebrate the Mitsubishi’s release from impound, Kavinsky had just put three coats of anti-laser paint on the headlights and bought himself a new radar detector.“

Right from the bat, characters expressed disdain of him:

“I hate that prick,” Adam said.

Then we get the “description” of him: white sunglasses, golden chain, which already is kinda lacking but then we get the infamous “refugee face”

“He had a refugee’s face, hollow-eyed and innocent.“

Okay okay, so like it wasn't already offensive, we learn later that he’s Bulgarian and as a person also from Slavic group, this description just looks bad and leaves bad taste in my mouth, because I'm fed up with Americans view of Slavs like we are all simple people, still in communist era somewhere in the Europe, who came to America to steal low income jobs.

On the other hand, how does “refugee face” looks like? Yeah, we get the line “hollow-eyed and innocent“ but it still feels offensive to Slavic group.

Luckily, in my translation it was changed to “runaway’s face” which holds the same idea but it isn't offensive and fits Kavinsky’s character better.

“There was nothing about Kavinsky that wasn’t despicable”

Just... ugh why they hate him so much, I asked myself back then but I didn't know that from this point, all went down hill.

“He was unmistakable: the sort of raven boy who was clearly an import from elsewhere.“

Okay first of all, you can import things, not actual people Blue. Second of all, combining this with “refugee face” it made me so angry like M*ggie, why can’t you describe Kavinsky normally without possibly offending half of Europe. He is human, not your new brand German car.

After that we get the rest of description “Like many of the other raven boys, he sported massive sunglasses, spiked hair, a small earring, a chain around his neck, and a white tank top.“ and that’s it. It’s all we get. There might be some things missing, like hair colour but we can forgive that.

2. Backstory

In M*ggie’s now deleted tumblr, she once wrote:

"Kavinsky has a very logical backstory that leads him to this place.”

And what did we know about Kavinsky? Practically, nothing. He’s a son of a Bulgarian mobster from New Jersey, he’s rumoured to kill his father, he’s mother is a drug-addict, he’s rich, Prokopenko is his favourite forgery and he got away with replacing him and possibly his dad. It gives the idea to what shaped him as a person but it doesn’t explained everything, like if he killed his dad, why wasn’t it? How did it ended up with him replacing Prokopenko? Why he is his favourite forgery?

But okay M*ggie say what you want but I and my friend made better backstory for him in ten minutes (like it wasn’t hard really).

3. ”We matter”

“Closing his eyes, Gansey leaned his head back on his seat, chin tilted up, throat green in the dash lights. There was still an unsafe sort of smile about his mouth — what a torment the possibility in that smile was — and he said, “There was never a time when that could’ve been you and me. You know the difference between us and Kavinsky? We matter.“

That said Gansey, the character we are supposed to like, about the kid who is not only his age but also drug addicted and possibly abused. I was furious at him for saying that because who k*rwa he is to say things like that. Is he some frigging higher being to judge someone like that?

And he was smiling while saying that? What an.. and nobody called him out on that?! It only gives the reader the idea that people like Kavinsky don’t matter and to those who relate to him that they don’t matter.

And Blue, who again made me want to throw my phone, later in the book asked literal a hitman, who offered to go to “talk” with him to “make him feel worthless” while doing it.

It’s the next example when I felt the main characters are lacking a basic human empathy, like again he is just a kid not “H*tler” like Ronan compare him to.

4. That scene

That f*king scene, we all know about.”R*pe of Ronan” as stans like to call it.

I heard the reaction of the fans to this scene even before reading this books. Of course, I was anticipating this scene and when it came:

“After a moment, he heard the hood groan as Kavinsky leaned over him. Then he felt the ridged callus of a finger drag slowly over the skin on his back. A slow arc between his shoulder blades, drawing the pattern of his tattoo. Then sliding down his spine, tensing every muscle it moved over.

But when his eyes slitted, battling sleep, Kavinsky was just doing another line of coke off the roof, body stretched over the windshield. He might have imagined it. What was real?“

I was baffled, because its bad but its nothing like fans making to be. All Kavinsky does is drag his finger on Ronan’s back tattoo, while he is falling asleep but afterwards Ronan said he doesn’t know, if it was even real, so the reader can’t tell if it was. Somebody would argue, that is a molestation but once again, we don’t know if it was real. Maybe if we got K’s PoV we could get information about this situation but now we are left in the dark what really happened that night.

And then, there is “Consent is overrated” scene

This is one of the main argument of stans preaching that K is a r*pist. Yes, that sounds horrible, we don’t have to argue about that but people missed the context of situation in which it was said.

“Ronan replied, “Not such a thief tonight.”

“Some nights,” Kavinsky said, all teeth, “you just take it. Consent is overrated.”“

Ronan and Kavinsky are referring to pulling things out of dreams and how Kavinsky is doing it aka not asking permission to take them out, unlike Ronan. But without this context, the world “consent” is mainly associated with one thing. You know what...

The bottom line is that, if we got K’s PoV, it would shine a light on his intentions and motivations to say and possibly do all of this. We can only thanks the author for that.

5. Relationship with Ronan Lynch

Maybe that will sound scandalous but I don’t think Kavinsky loved Ronan. All of their interaction seem more like obsession to me and after the dreaming of Camaro, it seem desperate.

At the beginning, after main characters expressed disdain of K, only Ronan thought something different:

“Ronan knew he ought to hate him, too.“

And I thought “Okay maybe Ronan know more about him than the rest” but as the chapters went, I wanted the end of it all.

It was toxic. I know, I know but I was hoping for a least little glimpses of possible friendship. Instead of that, I got throwing over cars, punching and exploitation between them. With Kavinsky saving Ronan from the night horror (which fans forget about in their rants how bad K is) and helping Ronan dreaming a new Camaro, I expect at least some decency? gratefulness?? at Ronan side, because nobody forced Kavinsky to do this but when Ronan got what he wanted he just peace out?! Like Kavinsky was doing all of this as a favour?

“He rolled down the window. “I’m going.” For a moment, Kavinsky’s face was perfectly blank, and then Kavinsky flickered back onto it. He said, “You’re shitting me.” “I’ll send flowers.” Ronan revved the engine. Exhaust and dust swirled in a wild torment behind the Camaro. It coughed at twenty-eight-hundred rpm. Just like the Pig. Everything was back the way it was. “Running back to your master?” “This was fun,” Ronan said. “Time for big-boy games now, though.”

And

““I never lie,” Ronan said. He frowned disbelievingly. This felt like a more bizarre scenario than anything that had happened to this point. “Wait. You thought — it was never gonna be you and me. Is that what you thought?”“

And what was Kavinsky’s reaction after he was “used” by Ronan without even a thank you?

“Kavinsky made a gun of his thumb and finger and put it to Ronan’s temple. “Bang,” he said softly, withdrawing the fake gun. “See you on the streets.”“

Not anger but disbelief about what just happened and then the “he said softly“ just seems sad to me. He got used by the man he, de facto, wanted to befriend. He for sure felt cheated and used but the next thing what he does seems just OOC for me. He kidnapped Matthew, Ronan’s younger brother, to force him to come to the Fourth of July party. Before it looked like he wanted Ronan just to have a fun but after the Camaro something broke in him. But once again, it only my interpretation, because K is the only TRC antagonist that doesn’t get PoV, so I can wonder, what was going on in his head.

I’m tired of this, because most of the things could be explained, if we got his PoV, because without it his actions seems random.

After the text “bring something fun to fourth of july or we’ll see which pill works the best on your brother“, Ronan called K demanding where is Matthew and K responded:

“Ronan demanded, “Where is he?” “You know, I asked nice the first few times. Are you coming to Fourth? Are you coming? Are you coming? Here, have a motherfucking car. Are you coming? You made it ugly. Bring something impressive tonight.”“

It doesn’t sounds that evil to me more like desperate (repetition of “are you coming”) and hurting (”you made it ugly”). It made me feel more curious about what was going in his head and what lead him to kidnapping more than being angry at him for kidnapping Matthew.

Kavinsky was looking someone like Ronan, to share problems and to destroy themselves together. And Ronan was the closest thing to it, dreamer and all. He was looking for connection but in the end, Ronan didn’t want anything to do with him and that ended in tragedy.

6. Fourth of July

Ah yes, the main reason why I’m writing this post. We know how this goes. Gangsey arrives at party. Ronan demands where is his brother. Ronan follow K into a dream.

"Kavinsky laughed the word. "Reality! Reality's what other people dream for you."

"Reality's where other people are," Ronan replied. He stretched out his arms. "What's here, K? Nothing! No one!"

"Just us."

There was a heavy understanding in that statement, amplified by the dream. I know what you are, Kavinsky had said. "That's not enough," Ronan replied."

One again K got rejected and it was told to him he "wasn't enough" Okay, Ronan doesn't own him anything but what happened next is more fucked up

Kavinsky dreams fire dragon, Ronan night horror. They fight. Gangsey search for Matthew.

Ronan demands K to tell him where is Matthew and K just said “He’s all yours! You missed my point, man. All I wanted was this —”“ while gesturing at their creations and ONCE AGAIN I REPEAT ONCE AGAIN we are not sure what K meant: dreaming together? fighting? One chapter from his PoV couldn’t hurt Maggie you know?

Matthew got rescued, Ronan shielded him from upcoming dragon then this:

"He shouted to Kavinsky, ”Get down!”

But Kavinsky didn’t look away from the creatures. He said,”The world’s a nightmare”.

Ronan once again shouted to him but Kavinsky didn’t answered and let the dragon to kill him.

“A second later, the fire dragon exploded into Kavinsky. It went straight through him, around him, flame around an object. Kavinsky fell. Not as if he was struck, though. Just like when he’d taken the green pill. He crumpled to his knees and then slumped gracelessly off the car.“

And we know K is dead, because both the dragon and Prokopenko fall asleep.

And that’s all and what was all for? Because they thought he was draining the ley lines (but Adam fixing the lines seems to do the trick) and because Ronan didn't want to come to Fourth of July. After that comes nothing. No reaction from the cast and the dream pack who supposedly were his friends (In later book Jiang talks to Ronan like nothing happened) there is no funeral of which we know and the town is silent. Like K never existed.

What kind of message this sends to a reader? That if you are like Kavinsky in any way nobody will mind if you are gone. You are not even worthless to remember. On one podcast M*ggie said she don’t want to be educational in her books and that’s f*cked up because she is writing YA, young people who are easily influenced and after reading how K is treated the majority will close the book with belief that people like K don’t deserve help and they are goners not worthy of redemption.

While in the same book Gray Man, adult hitman who killed people on pages, was hunting down Ronan, relieved to be murderer behind a Niall's death, beat up and threaten Declan with a gun to tell him where the Greywaren was not only forgiven by everyone (including Ronan) but got redemption arc and love interest. Let me repeat adult man, literal a hitman gets redemption arc but not mentally ill kid. Okay Margaret what the f*ck was that. Where is the logic, where is the lamb sauce?! Does she knows how her writing can influence young people? And it seems most of the fans agree with her.

Conclusion

Joseph Kavinsky was handled terribly through the whole book. With main cast hating him from the get-go. Narration that tried to make him the great evil (with some fans of TRC calling him the worst villain) and after the book got published the fans and the author themself further demonised him, 17 year old boy with a drug addiction, mental illness and with possible history of abuse.

I can only shake my head every time, I see someone calling him the devil. What Kavisnky needed was rehab and therapy, not death! If she wanted to find solution to stop him from dreaming, why couldn't she just moved him outside of Henrietta or Virginia, not lead him to commit s*icide and public s*icide mind you. He was a bad person but nobody deserved to die like this.

To end this post (I wrote this post so long that in my country is no longer Fourth of July), I still to this day think about Kavinsky and what would happened, if the author didn't choose the easy way to "get rid of him". And do not tell me, it was impossible to end it differently, because it was possible. Ronan just grabbing him by the shirt and pulling him off the car. Sending him to a rehab or just talking with him, instead of assuming from the start, that he wouldn't listen. His only crimes were, he needed help and he wouldn't listen to Gangsey telling him what to do.

Ehhhhh, more redesigns/rewrites! The Hong Kong Gang up here. And yes, I added Circe because I see her as part of the squad.

-Cricket-

I tried to make her a little more bug like. Adding a couple more details to the body, adding those palps to her face and changing the white in her eyes to black. Her outfit is slightly different but I changed her hair to a pixie cut, because I thought she'd suit a shorter hair style.

Notes:

16 Years Old

5'5 (When she is half cured, she becomes 5'4)

Real name is ‘Chen Tsui’

Because of her strange bug legs, she had to wear very short shorts. She didn't feel comfortable walking around with them on, however. So she ended up also wearing her skirt.

Before she mutated, she lived with her parents. They weren't the greatest of people, both extremely rich and successful in their businesses, expecting the same with their daughter. They constantly put her down and emotional abused her. The moment she became EVO, they kicked her onto the streets.

Use to have long hair, but Skwydd helped her cut and style it to a much shorter length. It was mostly so it didn't get in the way with the amount of jumping she did, but also a little rebellion against her parents. They would never allow such a look.

Excellent chief, food is often a ten out of ten.

Was the only one in the gang, including Rex, who was already in Hong Kong before going EVO.

When she is incredibly happy, the palps on her face will wiggle.

Emotional sponge of the group.

Because of her up bringing, she sometimes just does insane or stupid stuff out of nowhere because things use to be so uptight and strict for her. It strangely relaxes her.

Took her weeks to figure out how to walk with those legs.

Loves candles, especially scented ones.

Has a thing for street boys with a heart of gold (*Cough* *Cough* Rex *Cough* Tuck *Cough*).

Many don't notice it, but her and Skwydd have a sibling like relationship.

-Tuck-

I changed him the least. His original design is very simple so I couldn't think of much to do. I did rough up his shirt a little more, adjust his build and give him a loose belt.

17 Years Old

6'0 (Later grows to be 6'3.)

Full name 'Tuck Byron Craig'

Leader of The Hong Kong Gang since Rex left.

Before he mutated, he lived with his single father, who was a car mechanic. They were happy together, but sadly, they weren't in the best financial situation. They ended up borrowing money from some dangerous people, and when they couldn't came back they came to their place. A fight broke out, Tuck's father was killed and he ran away, living on the streets ever since, eventually mutating.

When Rex vanished, he spent the longest time looking for him. Skwydd assumed the worst quickly and Cricket gave up after a few weeks, while Tuck looked for months.

No.1 Bro to all.

Quarry had made plans to give Tuck Rex's hold spot, but he trash the idea when he saw that he didn't have the same flare as Rex did.

Because of his father, he knows a lot about mechanics with cars or motorcycles.

The one most likely to want to talk things through than fight if there is a chance (Cricket is too quick on defense, Skwydd doesn't trust easily and Circe many issues.)

God awful at trying to speak another language. Cricket tried teaching him Cantonese, but his pronunciations were way off. He tries, he really does.

Would have gotten his ear pierces if he had ears.

He likes crappy high school films, they always just make him laugh.

He's had a thing for Cricket for a long time, but when it became apparent to him she liked Rex, he didn't make any attempt. But now, in the present, he's began trying since it's clear nothing will come between the two.

-Skwydd-

Small squish boy. Honestly my favorite out of the crew. But anyway, I made his tentacles a little longer, gave him little eyebrow things, a gradient on his hands and gave him a new jacket/jumper.

15 Years Old

5'6

Real name is ‘Walter Milo Martin’

Emo with a secret soft heart <3.

Before he mutated, he was the child of a young couple who died in an accident, so he was giving to his maternal Grandmother, who was happy to raise him. Bit of an odd child, but he loved his Grandma and had a lovely relationship with her. Even when he turned EVO, she accepted him. However, in her older years she started having heart problems and died one morning. He, of course, called for help, but fled before anyone arrived. He knew very well that being an EVO will get him into trouble. Since then, he's lived on the streets.

He loves art, his favorite form being ink stuff, ironically. Him and Rex like to share drawings, one of the few quiet moments they have with one another.

Has a dorky crush on Circe.

Has a very squishy body and it's honestly nice to hug him, if he allows it.

While his ink spray is his main defense, his does have one nasty bite.

Also, his ink stuff stains, badly.

Has suction cups on his hand/fingers. It's the only way he can hold stuff with them.

Probably listens to My Chemical Romance or piano music.

Knows how the play the flute, a skill learnt from his Grandma.

The one you could vent to for hours without him having to talk too.

Has a really strange bone structure. Like, some parts of him has bones, some don't.

Had to painfully watch the love situation between Rex, Cricket and Tuck on the sidelines.

His real hair is quite long and he learnt early on how to cut, brush and manage hair, even style it. Sadly, he can't really do that anymore, and Cricket hair is too short to style, while Tuck has none. However, sometime after Circe joined and was comfortable enough, she lets him style it for her.

-Circe Kleiss-

You read that right, in this rewrite/reboot/WHATEVER!? Circe is the daughter of Van Kleiss. It was an idea me and my friend came up with, as a way to explain some of her actions and motives, but also for more dramaaaaaa, along with adding onto Van Kleiss's character. Yes, this also means her and Rex knew each other before the Nanite Event. Again, adds more drama. Her outfit changes were to be more practical, especially because of where the Pack lives and sends her on missions. I also made her a little muscular, because this girl has quite the training. Still a bit of a goth girl though.

Notes:

16 Years Old

5'8 (Grows to be around 6'0 in her young adult years.)

Fear this girl, she knows how to fight.

She was young when her mother died, roughly four years old, so she doesn't remember her that well. However, her father has always openly talked about her to Circe, so she knows her mother was a lovely person, with a personality that somehow made the cruelest of people smile. Sadly, she died to an untreatable disease, though this is was resulting in Van Kleiss joining the Nanite Project, after learning that it was suppose to prevent illnesses.

Biowulf was her primary training, so they have some respect for each other, but can get snarky at one another.

Her and Breach however? Not that great of a relationship. Circe does feel a little bad, as she understands Breach is not all there, but that doesn't stop them from bickering.

Skalamander and her have a rather peaceful relationship. She appreciates all that he does, even if it's minimal compared to the other two.

You could imagine her shock when she saw Rex, her childhood friend, alive. Gave quite the yelling at her father when she learns he never told her this.

Her and Cricket like to have little make up session, even if Cricket doesn't keep hers on afterwards.

She's really good a writing, often making little poems or short stories here and there. Horror is a favorite of hers.

In the past, her and Rex were the only kids around the labs during the Nanite Project. You can imagine the trouble they caused.

She has trouble standing up for herself, but lord forbid you say something about her friend.

She likes to watch murder mysterious, often getting really into the story and making predictions all the time.

Has the least knowledge of online culture.

Has a giant EVO worm thing as a pet (This one is actually in the show).

TIME COPS [loki fanfic]

NOTES: sup my dudes. this idea for this fanfic has been on my mind since the pictures of Loki as TVA agent were shown. my grammar is not very good my first language is not english but spanish. so if you see a mistake i’m sorry i’ll keep learning as i go. SUMMERY: when a witch named sabina is partner with god of mischief to save what we call time. things can only get better or worse. in this case it can be the unknown.

**CHAPTER ONE - THE OFFICE **

the cup of coffee that warms my hands and take sips of it as i look around what this people calls office. this place is insane. its like Costco warehouse in drugs. what they do here its not sales or marketing. this is something you see out of a movie

in each desk there was a person with a computer on which they had a case on. you would see them typing like maniacs. In a normal thinking you thought they were working on reports or run downs. But no. they were in fact saving time and keeping it in order. you may ask, where were they when thanos snapped his fingers and half of the universe turned into ash. well same question i have. and i did ask when i was questioned as when i was brought in. the respond that i got was a simple “time will tell”. All this time related shit is staring to annoy me. real hard.

I’m doing what we call in earth community service. i didn’t commit any type of crime whats so ever. i’m here cause the dick bag of my dad decided he was some type of thanos wanna be and tried to mess with dark power and messed up time. now, they couldn’t get there hands on him since he clothed himself so they got the next big thing, me. yay. iv’e never met the man, he left mom and me when i was three years old. not even a photograph i have. yet they think that i can be a tool on bringing him in. i personally don’t know were the accusing me of his crimes fits in you’re going to help us bring him in. but when you see the things they can do with just a wave of their hand. you will comply.

so i sit in my sad desk. my computer is shut down, they yet given me a case. it’s been over a month since been here. all i do is sip my coffee and see my surrounding, i can’t use my magic, the silver bracelet in my right wrist is the cause of that. well here i can’t use it. but in the ‘apartment’ they gave me i can. its the only time i’m bored to death. i only sleep 2 hours if i’m being honest, if i can find my dad faster than they can, then the faster i can get out here and forget all of this. I tried every location spell i know of memory and none were successful. the scars in my hand of the many times i had to cut my hand for blood its stupid. but you are forced out in the way i was and put here to listen and comply like a dog then you will too do anything you can to get out of here. what ever spell he used to hide is a really damn good one. but without my book of shadows theres not many things i can do.

right now it was 12 of clock. in which indicates lunch time. theres a cafeteria were all the employe’s go to eat lunch. i for one enjoy going to lunch. its the onetime where i’m not bored. plus in the month that i have been here i have made a friend. Carlos is a tan guy with brown eyes and hair with glasses. he is funny and occasionally a little paranoid. he was the only one who sat with me in my fist day here. now we laugh about the stupid things people do here and all. the good gossip about who had sex with who.

i sit down on my usual table and Carlos comes with his tray of food. “hey sab, how was you’re day is going”

I sigh and start playing the jello i had in my cup. “same old same old. bored to death and no case it all. you know i’m starting to think that all of this community service is a bunch of bullshit. how can you not made me do anything but drink coffee for a whole month.”

Carlo nods “it is fishy. did you ask commander about it?”

“i did and he said. that soon he will have a task for me and that for now enjoy my free time. whatever that means.”

commander was like the manager here. he orders us around and set the missions or cases. he was the one who questioned me when i got here. blue eyes blonde hair and pedo mustache. the boss, is unknown. no ones knows who he is, or has ever seen them only commander.

Carlos looks to his sides and leans over the table “ I wasn’t going to tell you until i confirmed it was official. but what you just said confirmed it. that soon can be as early as tomorrow. I heard from special forces they have a big mission two hours from now. the orders is to maintain and obtain. and according to my friend what ever they obtain there going to give it to you. its something about you have some same abilities like the thing there were going to obtain”

i lick my lips “ are you sure about that”

he nods. whatever they were going to obtain was magical for sure. something that has same abilities as me? what that could possibly be.

“then i guess i have to prepare” i say as i take of spoonful of the jello and eat it.

“sab please promise me that you will actually sleep more than two hours. you will need you’re strength for whatever this is.” carlo pleads.

i shake my head. “I can’t promise you that. I’m going to do one last location spell with a combination of a reverse cloaking spell. I think this time will work”

“can’t you do that the day after tomorrow. you need to sleep sab and to top all you will need use you’re magic for whatever their going to give you. if you don’t have strength you could die of that over using power” he worries

“don’t you think i know that. I have studied this since i can talk. i know what i’m doing. I need to do this tonight, i don’t if i’m going to be able after they give the task. I promise after this no more.” i take his hand and squeeze it. he cares for me and i for him. he’s the only person who has helped me here. Carlos is like brother to me people like him don’t come often.

“you better sab. I worry for you and you know that” he says with still worries in his eyes.

I smile and let of his hand. “ I know”

**At the apartment **

i sit down at the floor with candle’s around me and map of the world infront of me. i take a knife and slide it across my palm as i let the blood drip on the map, i close my eyes and start my chant. Phasmatos Tribum Nas Ex Veras, Sequita Saguine, Ementas Asten Mihan Ega Petous .

i open my eyes and i see that my blood has not moved it all. I shake my head and try again but the form with of the cloaking spell. I close my eyes once again i take a deep breath and start to chant once again _Phasmatos Tribum Nas Transmata Evo Notus Victus, Pellis Tinctura, Invidium Cala Mactus Sequita Saguine, Ementas Asten Mihan Ega Petous _

once again i open my eyes and i see nothing has happen. “AHH” I yell as i trow one of the candles against the wall. i have tried everything i know by memory. if i can’t find him with my own blood how in the hell they are going to find him. I’m tired of being here. its sad and dark. No windows, only a tv and two rooms a bathroom and a kitchen. i miss my grandma, i miss my life. i’m being used like pawn until they find use of me. I hate it. I hate it so much.

i get up from the floor to walk over to bathroom and clean the new wound i have in my palm. as i clean the cut i start to think what they could have in store of me in just of couple of hours. if carlos was right and this thing was magical it could help me locate my dead beat of a dad. maybe. i take a towel and dry my hands. I look over to the clock on the wall and it reads 1am. at least i will get five hours of sleep this time...

in the morning

when i woke up, I sit up my bed and looked my self in the mirror. I am tired, but so tired. Carlos was right. I couldn’t have done that spell i’m way too tired. I walk over to closet and i start putting on the ugly ass uniform they made us wear. who ever told this people that a tie and cream shirt was formal needs to choke on their own spit. I brush my hair and clean my teeth. I move over to the kitchen were i make my self some coffee.

I hear a knock on my door. I sigh and i walk over to open the door. that knock means that it was time to go to “work”. every morning a suit up guards comes here and escorts me over to the office. honestly i don’t mind it. kinda feels like i’m beyonce or something.

i open the door. “ hey Greg. what’s up” i say taking a sip of my coffee

greg smiles and “come on, the commander has a task for you”

I tilt my head. “really?” he nods. “yea, so hurry up.”

I nod my head and close the door behind me. Greg was cool. he’s like the bodyguard type like in the princess diaries that kinds feels like a dad figure. also on Fridays he lets me sleep in an hour extra so he’s tight.

when we arrive to the office and escorted to the commanders office. I open up the door and walk in. the commander looks up to me and smiles.”good morning Sabina. I want you to meet you’re new partner. Mr. Odinson”

I look over to the chair infront of the desk to see a man stand up and turn around to great me and when i saw that man give that smile, i knew.

it was the bitch who destroyed mahattan.

Time to leave the nest.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that, regardless of how you view Eureka 7: AO or Hi-Evolution, the community is not what it once was. I’m not going to make this a diatribe about what’s wrong with Hi-Evo (since my friends and I dissected it quite thoroughly in the podcast) or AO or even PFOR, but I will say that the lackluster reception of Hi-Evo has doused a lot of the passion this community once had, or at least it played a role.

As I’ve said in the podcast and elsewhere, I’ve been a part of the Eureka 7 fan community really ever since it first aired in the US in 2006. I’m what you would call an OG. I’ve been here since the very beginning, and I’ve seen so much happen to this beloved IP and this community, not all of it good.

When I joined the tumblr scene in 2012 when AO was airing, there was still a high level of enthusiasm and energy in the community. Even if AO wasn’t well-received by many, we still had the motivation to do some great things. The passion people had was really inspiring, and it was a major factor in me continuing my historical fanfiction series. Knowing people still cared about what I wrote kept me going. I’ve said this a million times, but to all those people who followed me and kept up with my historical series, thank you so very much. I wouldn’t have finished it without you.

As I was writing my historical series, other people made great contributions as well. Artists on tumblr made fanart that is still well-loved to this day. Users made and shared remixes of classic E7 songs. We organized weekly chats and Secret Santa events each Christmas. Some of us even tried to make a visual novel based on Eureka 7. To me, that is nothing short of remarkable.

As time went on, interest died down. It’s only natural that people would fall away from it. By the time 2017 rolled around, I was well aware that enthusiasm was waning and, as I’ve said before, were it not for Hi-Evolution being announced, I would have quietly made my exit from the community upon completion of my fanfiction series. That’s not to say I was bitter about it, either; I figured it was the best course of action since I made it clear in past anonymous asks that I wasn’t going to add more to the fandom once it was done.

When Hi-Evolution was announced, I was initially excited. The community went through a brief resurgence as hopes ran high. There was a genuine belief that this would be the franchise’s saving grace. I thought this was a chance to rekindle interest and learn from past mistakes.

Boy, was I wrong.

All the hopes I had were shattered at Otakon, and while I can only speak from my own perspective, it seems like Hi-Evo 2 as well as the delay of Hi-Evo 3 killed any remaining interest in the fandom. Instead, it’s left a splintered community, one where people no longer have the enthusiasm to write fanfics, make fanart, or even do special collaborative projects like the visual novel.

Many of the friends I made in the community tell me point blank that they are either fed up with the franchise entirely or are done after Hi-Evolution 3. If people are saying that, then I genuinely fear we are facing the death of a once-proud, tightly-knit community. And that makes me beyond sad.

I know I come off as abrasive and some people sling the word “hater” at me for my opinions, but people who know me will tell you that I’m only speaking from a place of love for Eureka 7. For all the problems I have with Hi-Evolution and the franchise writ large, I don’t want to live in a world where this anime doesn’t exist. It made me into an anime fan. I have made some of my closest friends through this, some of whom I still keep in contact with to this day.

I believe the bonds we make are stronger than whatever Bones throws our way, but I can’t help feeling saddened that the thing which united us is now turning us against each other. If the sometimes vitriolic asks I’ve received and the horror stories we shared in the podcast are any indication, the fandom is split, possibly beyond repair. We’ve reached the stage where you can’t have a conflicting opinion and be treated with respect anymore; instead, you’re viewed as the enemy. A hater. A troll whose views should be discounted.

If you voice anything other than a positive opinion about anything E7-related, be it AO, the manga, the games, or Hi-Evolution, you’re shut down and cast out. It’s not enough to just like E7; now, we all have to be comfortable and build a hugbox. That’s not the message E7 originally imparted.

Eureka 7 is a show about accepting reality in all its ugliness. Anyone who has watched the anime knows it can be very uncomfortable at times. Some moments are hard to sit through, but that’s the whole point. Renton had to learn the hard way that the life he dreamed of was just that: a dream. The people he looked up to weren’t the idealized heroes he thought they were. The world is ugly, and he had to accept that. I think we need to take the same approach when looking at this franchise.

It’s okay to dislike Hi-Evolution, AO, or anything else that’s come after the original. Fuck, the original isn’t perfect by any stretch. What anime is? What’s not okay is to disrespect others for a differing opinion or (in my case) harassing them. I hardly think that’s the message Eureka 7 wanted to leave its viewers.

What makes me sad is that it was never like this before. Even in the AO days, people were willing to let it all go. We still had fun together because we thought that the bonds we made were more important than a show that didn’t turn out well. But something changed between then and now. I don’t even know what, but the community and how it dealt with differing views changed. And I don’t like what it’s become.

Now, our community is all but dead. Not just on Tumblr, but everywhere I go, the story is the same. When Hi-Evo was announced, the Subreddit was abuzz with activity and excitement. Now, it’s practically a ghost town. The Discord server, which I left some time ago, has gone the way of disco according to all my friends. I think it’s because many of us are just bitter about what’s happened or are fed up. I’m not surprised people have gotten bored with Eureka 7; I have too.

To be perfectly honest, I wish Hi-Evo was never made. It would have been better if our fandom just slowly faded away from inactivity instead of splitting into ever smaller, squabbling camps. At least then it would have ended on a positive, happy note. Now, based on everything I’ve seen, heard, and read, it’s ending on a note of bitterness. It’s doubly sad, because Eureka 7 is optimism: the anime.

So where am I going with all of this? I don’t know. Honestly, I just wanted to vent because I needed to get this off my chest. It’s been a drain to watch something I loved and cherished for so long slowly fall to pieces and the friends I once had in this fandom turn against each other.

Eureka 7 has been such a touchstone in my life for so long that to see it crumble away like this is heartbreaking. Revisiting this franchise’s fall from grace just leaves me depressed. It’s like a blood-sucking vampire, and I can’t fucking take it anymore.

That’s why this is my last post about Eureka 7.

As much as you guys think it’s interesting, I can’t keep doing this. I don’t have the patience to wait until 2021 for the final film, and I don’t suspect many others do, either. I don’t care if it will be all hand-drawn; I’m sick and tired of even talking about it. It’s like I’m beating up a disabled person; nothing I say is going to change what we’ve already gotten or alter the reality of where the fanbase is now. It’s really sad, but I just need to move on from this.

Almost 15 years have passed since I first watched Eureka 7. Back then, I was just a lonely 16 year old kid trying to find out where to go in life. I will be 30 in January, I have a full-time job, my life is much more hectic now than it ever was, and it’s turned out better than I ever dreamed. Eureka 7 Hi-Evolution didn’t turn out too well, but there will be more disappointments to come, no question. Life is full of them. Why focus on them forever?

I don’t think that harping on the past is productive. Time only moves forward and it waits for no one. I have limited time on this earth, and I don’t want to spend it kicking this turd around forever. Life is too short to waste it on small things like an anime franchise that didn’t end well. I want to start the new decade fresh, and that means letting go of the things that have weighed me down.

I’m going to grab my future with my own hands. Because I learned from Eureka 7 a seminal lesson that’s guided me through life:

Don’t beg for things. Do it yourself, or else you won’t get anything.

Western Gun Rig.

Hi, I’ve been busy doing all the bags and pouches, book covers etc that I have previously posted all of which can be located on my Blog ‘Beginners Journey into LeatherCraft’ in the archive. So, what’s this about a Western Gun Rig I hear you ask, Well, the Big Kid inside me has come out after watching some of the fast draw videos on YT. and I’ve made me a ‘Cowboy Belt’. Unfortunately I’m making it in the UK, one of the most strict places on the planet against firearms so I have had to make it ‘very’ clear that what you see are ‘Props’, nothing more than replicas with zero chance of anything going Bang because basically..it’s a Toy used to help me in the build. So lets get on, hope you enjoy.

The first thing I needed was a Replica of a Pistol that I fancied making the holster for. I looked online and settled on the ‘Single Action’ Colt ‘Army’ .45 (Short barrel) and a handful of Dummy rounds for the belt.. Not cheap but it was needed..as an actual ‘toy’ pistol wouldn’t have the weight or the bulk of this.

I also needed a pattern so I purchased the Holster and Gun belt pattern pack from Tandy leather. As you can see..it looks a bit complicated, but we have a saying in the UK..’Give it a coat of Looking at’...and after 3 cups of tea and many coats of looking at I finally realised how simple it really was. So I chose which belt I wanted to make from the ‘several’ that are here and started cutting.

Following the pattern guides I used a sheet of paper laid the gun as shown along the fold line

Then I dropped it down to the Right side and drew around the Pistol as seen here, to the ‘right’ allows for a Right handed draw. if for a left hander...just go to the left, all other instructions are the same.

The basic holster pattern is done.

I use anything to hand that will give me the curves I want on the holster and after getting the basic shape you can use a bit of artistic licence to get it how you want it, but there has to be enough to actually hold the pistol in so don’t cut too much away. there is a quite slim looking piece to the pattern on the front, top left...I worried it was too thin but as the project progresses it looks less of a weak spot.

I chose to use the same 3.5-4mm leather for the Holster as well as the belt. next time I would definately choose maybe 2.5-3mm as..although it came out beautiful It is quite a heavy holster and when you consider the weight of leather in the belt plus a Solid Brass Buckle plus a Pistol ‘and’ 24 Dummy rounds...it makes for quite a weight so next time I will ‘save’ weight where I can without giving away quality or looks though.

I used the template / pattern I made to cut out the leather as seen here. A quick tip: When I forst started I was going through Stanley blades really fast...now I ‘Use jewellers rouge and strop’ them and one blade is lasting me at least a month and its so easy to do.

Here I’m ‘dampening’ the Leather ready to Burnish the edges. Don’t soak it or it will go to mush when you burnish. if you over wet it by mistake just wait for it to dry out a bit and carry on.

I did use my machine to Burnish most of the edges but had to revert back to the old wooden burnisher for the harder to reach places.

I cut a ‘Welt’ as I would for a knife sheath, it does protect the stitching but in this case it also helps to create space for the pistol. See here I have used 528 contact cement from EVO STICK and have put glue on both pieces...waited for it to get ‘tacky’ before sticking in place.

I glued it one side at a time, don’t try to glue and stick both sides at the same time, I was reliably informed by a very experienced gunbelt maker that if you do...it can cause all kinds of problems...if you get it out of line and the contact cement touched...it sticks fast.

Also, as I was sticking it along one edge I left it ‘proud’ of the edge as seen in this pic’ by an 1/8th or so...for sanding later.

Transferring a pic of some Oak leaves and acorns to the holster after dampening it. You can do any design you please or leave it plain. more on this later.

Cut out the pattern for the Belt part of the build. I used 3.5 - 4mm thick veg tan leather, By the end of this I found that this is ideal for the Belt itself and with all the manipulation during the build by the finish it was very supple, far different to what I began with.

After drawing the outline with a Paint pen refil, (which comes of easily ) I wet / dampened the leather and used a ball point tracing tool to go over the design lines pressing to leave the imprint in the leather. I chose to do everything as it came on the pattern but you can choose sections...it’s your choice. I then put on the soft cotton glove and started the carving with the swivel knife. Some of you know but for those who don’t, I wear the glove to prevent my nails dragging on the leather leaving marks, it’s a tiny detail but adds a little extra professionalism not having nail ‘dents’ everywhere.

Next I used the beveler to make the design more pronounced from the leather.

A good Tip...I made a ‘shot’ bag from suede..filled with lead shot, it’s great for holding the leather still whilst tooling.

don’t forget to cover the back in the decorators paper tape before tooling to minimise stretching.

I chose for myself, to ‘stipple’ the background. When doing leather crafting, you start with an idea but that idea swaps and changes as you go along and in my mind I felt it would look good once all the dying and polishing was done.

The outline beveling is done and the back ground stippling is well under way.

The long blank area at the bottom of the belt is the area I will put the Dummy rounds.

These next few pics show the detailing going on, making the leaves and flowers etc stand out more.

Next I punched the holes I need to put the strap through to hold the ‘Rounds’ then I threaded them to see which particular style of threading I wanted. This way looks good but only allows me to put twelve rounds on the belt.

Here you can see the pattern piece I used to trace and then cut these belt end pieces.

here you see the Buckle strap cut out edged and burnished with a decorative line added around the edge and a Solid Brass Buckle I had made for this project from some guys who make them by hand.

Notice here how I have changed the strapping style to a much tighter closer look, this allowed me to put 24 rounds on instead of only twelve and I feel it’s a much nicer look.

Ok so now we’re back to the holster. The tracing and transfer of the design is the same as with the belt design and a very easy thing to pick up, takes a little practice as with anything but beginners will soon get better with practice on old scraps, I developed my technique by carving coasters for friends and family.

A good view here of the swivel knife cutting, almost finished cutting the oak leaves and acorns in. you can also see a decorative / stitch line around the edge. looking back I discovered it would be better to leave the decorative / stitch line until I’m done sanding edges as I took off so much it left the line slightly closer to some of the edges, luckily this was on the back of the holster out of sight...lesson learned.

The Welt, used for a couple of things, one ...to protect the stitching and two..to give more space for the Pistol.

Here the Welt is glued to one side, better I’m told by a very experienced gun belt maker because if you try to stick both sides at the same time it can go very wrong as the contact cement...once it touches..sticks. You can also see the very soft 1mm leather I chose for the liner, I’m told the liner is to prevent the tougher veg tan flesh side taking the coating off the gun over time.

Here I’m gluing the backing to the holster and trimming. I glued the holster to an oversized piece to make it easier not to have to line up the edges. easier to cut later.

Here you can see that I have left the Welt sticking slightly proud of the edge to make the sanding easier later.

I had to carefully use a sharp blade to get the welt off so that i could put the liner on and roll it down, but it was simple enough toglue back on. Some of you may notice that the actual holster changes half way through the pics, that’s because I got tired and made a left hand holster instead of the right and had to change it.....it’s such an addictive craft that you fail to notice the time sometimes, it gets late and mistakes start to happen.

Ok, so here ‘s the first fitting. I loaded up some dummy rounds in the strap ( I still have no idea what that bit’s called lol.) to see if I was getting the fit right. very pleased by this point. I will say that this is a lot of work, so maybe not for a complete novice to try right away but after a few months of learning the basics you (anyone) should be ok to give it a go. I like how the color looks too but ultimately I’m looking to make it more ‘worn’ and antiqued looking. also, if you have a leather stitching machine you can do your stitching quicker, but I like the look of hand stitched so thats what I did.

The dummy rounds strap is missing a few here, I was waiting on a delivery of more rounds.

here are a few of the tools I used, Dividers, stitch groover and two sizes of bevellers.

I used Fiebings Walnut Pro dye on the inner liner to help it match the rest later.

note how much thicker the holster is after gluing the Welt in. I used my sanding machine to smooth down the excess over hang I left earlier.

Note the left handed holster ..I’ll use that on another belt. Here I’m Walnut dying the bullet strap, the buckle strap and the belt extension strap.

Time to dye the Holster, using Walnut and following it with a coat of eco flo dark brown antique dye.

Once dyed the belt and holster need to be darkened off so that it ages the look of the belt. I used Eco Flo Dark Brown antique dye.

Note how much darker the holster is now after the antique dye has been added compared to the belt.

I decided to add line 27 snap studs to the back of the holster to be able to change it out for bigger holsters / pistols if required. The dye came out great and after the antique it polished up very well. Also..though it’s not intended for it...it turns out the antique works great for darkening and polishing the edges. I didn’t use edge kote as I personally don’t like the look. Just a personal choice, maybe you’ll like it...try it on scrap first.

The straps were then dyed to match and burnished, ready to fit to the main belt.

I was advised to use an oval hole punch as it doesn’t get mishapen as quickly as a round hole. I now use this on all my belts and straps.

I always use the Evo Stick 528 contact cement if possible, be warned though this stuff..once cured..will really stick and if you are not lined up..you have a problem, it’s good stuff. Not necessary as I only need to attach the strap long enough to hold it in place whilst I Hand stitch it, but I always think..”Why not”..it just makes the whole thing that bit stronger.

Again with 528 glue for the Buckle strap. I used a leather ‘rougher’ to create grip for the glue but you can do it with a scratch awl or other sharpish object.

The straps are glued, here I’m making the stitch holes I used a 4mm.

On to the Hand stitching using a Saddle stitch and a Dark Brown waxed thread.

What follows from this point is a lot of extra pics showing off the almost finished belt, You can see I’ve added the Brass buckle, very simple, if you are more than a novice you will be aware how this is done, if you are new to leather craft you will find lots of pics in the archive showing how to do this.

All that’s left to do now are fiddly bits. To burnish the edges of the main belt, very easy to do as I decided ‘not’ to add a ‘Liner’ to the main belt...the reason?...well the holes I cut for the ‘Rounds’ strap were a tiny bit close to the edge of the belt and I didn’t feel there would be enough material stuck in that area, hence my decision. lesson learned for my next one. I said four and a half years ago when I began my ‘journey’ that I would mention any issues or mistakes I make in the hopes that you might avoid doing the same thing...that was not so much a mistake...as I followed the pattern..but I learned that not all patterns are exact and I will adjust this area next time.

I also need to add some lace in these two holes to pull over the Pistol ‘Hammer’ to prevent the gun falling out of the holster whilst the ‘Cowboy’ / ‘Cowgirl’ is running or rolling around and to add a longer lace to the back bottom edge to use as a leg tie.

Excuse ken, he’s a slim kinda guy and it’s falling off him...oh well. lol. But I’m Loving this thick strap with the hand made solid brass buckle.

Annnnd..that’s a Wrap folks, What a great project this was, I would recommend having a go, maybe not for a complete beginner.....not that you couldn’t do it if you took it slow but it’s expensive to make, especially if you need to buy the replica and the dummy rounds and to make mistakes on expensive leather can ruin your day. I’ve learned a lot making this and I will improve again on the next one but I am more than happy with my first ever attempt, I’m looking forward to the next one. I hope this might encourage some of you to try your hand at leather craft. The Three Body Problem: Chapter 9

Elytra weren’t allowed during war-related activities, but Grian always kept one in his inventory anyway. It was this Elytra that the Watcher equipped midair. Had they been any less of a talented flier, they probably would have plummeted to their death anyway.

Watcher, stop, tell me what’s wrong, let me help you -

But Grian’s shouts did nothing. The Watcher was completely on autopilot, flying determinedly to some location unbeknownst to Grian. They veered sharply to the left as the beach came into view, and as they flew over the ocean, Grian’s base came into view.

Watcher flew all the way up to the top of the base, the wind drying their tears and burning their skin, then dived down the centre. They pulled up a second too late and tumbled across the floor. Team STAR’s flag tangled up in their limbs.

Watcher, please…

Again, the Watcher ignored them. They untangled themself and made their way over to the entrance to the infinity room. They crawled inside and wrapped their arms around their knees, hiding their face and sobbing.

Grian was at a complete loss for what to do. The Watcher wouldn’t listen to anything he said - didn’t recognize him, even. How was he supposed to help them like this?

But maybe…. The Watcher didn’t recognize Grian, but they might recognize Poultry Man. Did he want to risk going AFK, though? What if the Watcher came back to themself while he was AFK and needed help? He didn’t have any other ideas, though, so AFK it was.

Poult? Can you hear me?

grian? hey! is the war over?

No, but I need your help. Watcher needs help, something’s happened to them. I think they might be having a flashback or something; they don’t even know who I am.

oh my goodness. what can i do?

“But… no, no, it wasn’t that. It was us versus them. Me versus… me versus them.”

“No. Yes. Not on purpose.” They hunched over again and wrapped Team STAR’s flag around their hand.. “∴ᔑℸ ᓵ⍑ᒷ ∷ said it wasn’t real. That it was just a game.”

Oh, no, Grian realised. And I told you the same thing.

“Don’t worry,” the Watcher reassured him, “I’m smarter now. I know you were just trying to make me feel better.”

If Grian had been in control of the body, the heart might legitimately have broken. Watcher, I swear to you on all my Elytra that no one is taking the war that seriously. I mean, it’s not even a war, it’s, it’s just a bunch of silly pranks that escalated.

The Watcher’s brow furrowed. “But - but back home it started the same way. Just silly little things. And ∴ᔑℸ ᓵ⍑ᒷ ∷ told me we were going to play a game and we were going to win. But we lost instead and they were all so angry.”

“Both.”

it’s not like that this time. Rarely was Poultry Man6 serious, but if ever there was a time he needed to be, it was now. all the hermits are still friends, and they all love each other just as much now as they did before the war.

He’s right. Remember when Ren tried to help us on the roof when he realised something was wrong? He wouldn’t have done that if he didn’t care.

The Watcher unwound the flag and stared at it. “I do remember. I - I think -” Their eyes went wide. “I told everyone I’m not you!”

what?!

It’s okay, Grian said quickly, I’ll talk to them about it. I’ll tell them whatever you want me to. If you want me to tell them the truth, if you want me to tell them the truth but make sure they don’t interact with you, if you want me to lie - whatever. I don’t want to force you to do anything you aren’t comfortable with.

The Watcher swallowed. “They’re our friends. I think they deserve the truth.”

you up to it? you don’t want to rest first?

“If I don’t do it now, I’ll chicken out.” They stood up and dusted off their pants. “Can I ask everyone to meet in here?”

can you meet in the main room instead? sorry, it’s just…

“Oh my goodness, I completely forgot! Poult, I’m so sorry. Here, let me -” They closed their eyes and fumbled blindly for the exit. “Okay, I’m going to message everyone.”

Almost instantly, Ren messaged them back: [are you okay????]

[we’re fine. Can you meet us here? It’s important.]

The Watcher pocketed the communicator and exhaled shakily.

Watcher?

“M’fine.”

In hardly any time at all, every single hermit was gathered on the bottom floor of Grian’s base, waiting for an explanation.

“So…” the Watcher began awkwardly. “I think most of you heard me say that I’m not Grian.”

There was an assortment of nods and mumbles.

“My name is Watcher, and I’m from Evo.”

That elicited some curious whispers. Impulse said, “Evo? Isn’t that Grian’s old world?”

The Watcher nodded. “Yes. I’m one of the Watchers who, well, watched it. Some… some bad things happened, and I was lonely, so I tried to talk to Grian, and now. Well. Now we’re stuck in the same body.”

“Wait a second,” said False. “If you and Grian started sharing a body in Evo, then that means you’ve been in Hermitcraft for as long as Grian has. Why didn’t you tell us you were here?”

Grian’s voice in the back of their mind was soothing. You’ve got this.

“I was afraid something like this would happen - something like the war. I didn’t want any of you to know I was here in case… in case something else bad happened.” The Watcher stood up straighter. “But Grian and Poultry Man helped me understand that this war isn’t really a war, so here I am.”

“Whoa, back up; Grian and Poultry Man?”

“Ah, right. Poultry Man is actually a separate entity from Grian and I. He also shares the body. It’s… a bit crowded.”

“How does that work? Are all three of you in charge at the same time? Or do you have, like, shifts?”

“Only one of us can be in control at once, but the other two can see and hear everything the body sees and hears.”

“Can Grian and Poultry Man hear us now, then?” asked Stress.

“Yes.”

She waved. “Hullo, Grian! Hullo, Poultry Man!”

Hello.

hi!

“They say hello back.”

tell her i like her adopt-a-chick program.

“Poult says he likes your adopt-a-chick program.”

“Aw, thank you.”

The Watcher looked at the flag in their hand and held it out to Doc. “I believe this is yours.”

But Doc shook his head. “You worked hard to earn that flag.”

“But it’s Team STAR’s last flag.”

Doc shrugged. “Guess G-Team won, then.”

“But… you’re not upset that you lost?”

“Why should I be? You said it yourself: this isn’t even a war, really.” He gently pushed the flag away. “Congratulations on your win, G-Team.”

“Who got the flag, anyway?” asked Stress. “Was it you, Grian, or Poultry Man?”

“It was me. I was… a bit overzealous.” They scuffed the floor with their foot and looked down. “It’s lovely to finally talk to all of you, but today has been kind of exhausting, so I’m just going to let Grian take things from here.”

As the Watcher gave Grian control of the body, Grian whispered, Well done, Watcher. I’m proud of you.

Aww thank you! Getting this ask cheered me up. It took me all that evening to do my elearning, but I feel hinoured to answer your questions now. I thought I’d leave them til I could do them justice :D From this meme. 16. Do you play online or in person? Which do you prefer?DnD? Online, sadly. It doesn’t stop me from buying way too many dice because they are small, relatively cheap, shiny and make me happy. My friends and I do play in person from time to time - we spent almost a week doing nothing but play games when we went to the expo earlier this summer. But we haven’t played DnD when we meet up. So I’ve never - technically - rolled for initiative XDI love playing online with them because we all live geograpgically scattered in or around London; close enough to meet occasionally, but not close enough to play on weeknights. This way, we get to play more often because we don’t have to worry about travelling to each other, or the other realities of in-person gaming. Which means playing more often, and moreBut when we play games IRL it’s much nicer, because people get more into the roleplay and you just get to spend time with your friends. There’s an atmosphere about being in the same room that you can’t quite get from skype.

24. How much planning/preparation do you do for a game?

When I started, I made a spreadsheet of spells I was considering for my wizard, having looked at lots of discussions of which ones work well and which don’t. I basically picked all the spells I thought I’d want. But, each time I level up, I re-examine it and change my mind. Oh, I’m also in charge of the group loot and finances. Mostly cos I like making colourful spreadsheets. Interestingly, my friends decided that meant my character should be the one carrying the Bag of Holding in game. They just all started assuming that. I let them roll with it cos why not? My wizard would probably think it was pretty cool. At first, I did a lot of reading to make sure I could understand the rules. Now, I open up my spreadsheets and word docs (I chronicle what happens as we game), and I’m good to go. Oh, and when I’m not in an art block desert, I sometimes try to set the mood for games by posting art to our whatsapp group before the game to get my friends excited. 31. What is your favorite class? Favorite race?Hmm, I’m not sure I could pick one! I’ve gotten furthest with my level 8 elven wizard, but I found my bard/sorc tiefling to be such a fun dynamic. I didn’t enjoy being very squishy as an early level wizard, but it really helped shape her character. And I enjoyed how my group (made up of 3-4 elves) played that snootiness and social drama to its full effect. I quite liked another game in which I had a cleric halfling (or was it gnome?) sort-of-pirate, in part because our entire party was coincidentally made of little people - dwarves, gnomes, halflings and a kobold. I’m looking forward to playing something different at some point - I’’d like to create characters for most of them. There are so many races and classes I haven’t yet made characters for, or played, so I couldn’t say for sure, until I played more of them. 32. What role do you like to play the most? (Tank/healer/etc?)I deliberarely chose a wizard at first because I didn’t want to be a healer; enough of that at work, thanks. I just wanted to do cool things. It’s pretty fun playing the glass cannon; you get to be an under-estimated character who then turns around and does something frighteningly awesome. Even if you fail all your strength rolls and nearly die if an opponent touches you. But of course, you don’t let them touch you because your intellgence is 20. Mwahaha But really, I like being able to cast spells that change battle for my friends; blinding an opponent, for example. I try to avoid fireballing everything because I don’t want to dominate play or deprive my friends of things to do. So that remains a potent nuclear option for when the situaiton is desperate, and I avoid it losing its effect. For my tiefling, I was guest-starring in my friends’ long-running game and didn’t want them to die. So I picked a chacacter which was partly a bard for the healing spells and musical flair. And healing people is surprisingly nice. I like making sure my friends don’t die. That’s the one thing wizards suck at. 33. How do you write your backstory, or do you even write a backstory?Oh, I write so much of a backstory. First, I pick a race and class and have a rough idea of what they might be. Then I roll up some stats and create them as per the book. Once the basics are out of the way, I get to work making a story behind them. I have to know what their childhood was like, how they got on with family and friends. If they’ve ever fallen in love, and if it worked out (usually not, cos why would they leave their sweetheart to kill rats in sewers?). I need to know what motivates them. Not only why they are adventuring, but what they want out of life. What they fear. What they think of their party. 34. Do you tend pick weapons/spells for being useful or for flavor?Both. Also, what I think my character will pick as a person. So my barely-of-age evoker wizard wants to prove to her overbearing family that she’s good enough to be a wizard and take on her mother’s family legacy, despiite her father’s humble (and shh! not entirely high elven) heritage. She’s young and naive and a little angry and her idea of learning to be powerful is big spells that go BOOM! She wants to defend herself and her friends, and defeat the bad guys, and she believes that just immolating them is a viable tactic if they are evil and out to kill her. She doesn’t have to find a clever solution when that will do. So I pick spells with that evocation feel whenever I can. But she’s also sensible and recognises that we don’t just need boom spells, we need to hold enemies, or help our friends, so she’s begun to diversify as she got more mature. And out of character, whilst I try to pick things I think she wold want to learn, i’m not just going to pick every evo spell going for the flair. I know that I also don’t want to be useless to the team. But, whenever I can, I try to retain a bit of that flair by reverting to her style of magic so she’s still herself. 35. How much roleplay do you like to do?I love roleplay. I’m also quite shy, and sometimes tired, so there will be sessions when I don’t say much; my character would never volunteer herself as the first to talk ot strangers - not with the Lady High Elf or the talkative bard or the thief/paladin charmer all in the party. But I do love our roleplay heavy sessions, and when I’m relaxed and when it feels in-character, I do love to get into it sometimes. I’m lucky that my friends are a mix; some people love roleplay, others like it but are more shy, so there’s no pressure to ham it up, but also no judgement if we do. It’s easier if the character is like you; a reserved wizard (or my librarian in our CoC game) is not far removed from a nerdy doctor introvert. My more loquacious and flambouyant tiefling bard is alittle harder for me to get into the mood to play, but I think I’m getting more into it with time. I’d like to get better at diving into roleplay because I feel it adds something to the game.

Hi! I absolutely love all your creations and I was wondering what program you used to make your models? You've really inspired me to try my own hand at this type of stuff, but it's alllll new to me, so help would be appreciated!!

Hi there, and I’m so glad you like them! I use a program called Daz3D. It is a free piece of software that can be used to render rigged models, most often Daz proprietary models, props, and clothing. The software itself is free, but unfortunately, pretty much nothing to use with it is.

I would never try to caution someone against getting into rendering because it is fun once you get the hang of it and have a decent library of resources to play with, but there are a few things that folks often don’t realize (and I didn’t at first either). So, here’s the skinny…

1 - Cost. CostCostCost. As I said above, the software itself is free. However, the models and clothing and props and lights to go with it are not. I have a library of…maybe about ten different Daz-Branded models (a mix of male and female). Each model can range from about $30 on sale, to over $100. And if you want the model to be anatomically correct, you have to buy the ‘Pro’ version, which is over $100. Sometimes you can snag them on sale - I just bought two new ones (one male and one female) for 60% off, but it still adds up. Then there are the various characters you can buy for those models…each one ranging from about $10 or more depending on level of complexity (the most expensive I’ve seen was I think like $45, but she came with hair and an outfit). These base characters, along with purchasable ‘morphs’ are what allow you to create your own special faces and customized body shapes. Clothes. Shoes. Props. Lights. Backgrounds. Poses. You -do not- want to know how much money I’ve invested in this stuff. Too much. So much so that I won’t even tell my bf how much I’ve spent because I know he’d blow a gasket (we’re supposed to be saving up for a house). It’s an addiction, one that can be hard to stop. At this point, I really only try to buy stuff when it’s on sale for a deep discount.

2 - Hardware. Daz3D utilizes two different rendering engines, 3Delight, which is old and less resource-hungry (but also results in less-than-realistic images), and NVIDIA IRAY. As you might suspect, because I included the word ‘NVIDIA’, IRAY is a NVIDIA resource. Which means that if you have an AMD graphics card, too bad, so sad….you’re s.o.l. However, even you do have a NVIDIA card, rendering with the IRAY system is hardcore. Like…ultra hardcore. You need the horsepower to back it. Here are my system specs - AMD RYZEN 7 1800X Octa-Core w/ NZXT X62 AIO Cooler MSI Gaming Pro-Carbon Mobo 32GB 3200 Corsair Vengeance RAM EVGA GTX 1080TI FTW3 11GB GPU EVGA SuperNOVA 850 P2 Platinum PSU Corsair Crystal 570X Tempered Glass Case (all fans upgraded) Samsung 960 EVO 250GB M.2 (operating system) Samsung 960 EVO 1TB M.2 (games and rendering which is almost full) Samsung 850 EVO 500GB (games) Western Digital Black 3TB (storage) Western Digital Black 4TB (backup) Western Digital 3TB External (backup) Carbonite (online backup) Acronis True Image 2018 (local backup software)

Don’t ask how much all that cost (like srsly…don’t, lol). And with all that…some renders have still taken several hours to finish. And sometimes, I have to do several passes to blend them all together in Photoshop.

3 - Learning Curve. Yes, you can render out of the box. But, as with any art, you want to make things your own. That leads to customization. Make your own lights. Make your own backdrops. Customize those textures. I’m playing constantly with stuff in Photoshop. That leads to other things, like learning what a bump map is…what a normal map does…what subsurface scattering is for. Learning the basics of photography and composition is also a ginormous help.

4 - Additional Software. Just like above, you -can- make renders with only using DAZ3D. But, if you want to take it to that next level, that means learning things like Photoshop, which adds to the cost. There are free options, such as GIMP, but I never could get a handle on its rat’s nest of a UI…probably because I learned with Photoshop from Day 1 (I have a background of photography and modding other video games). There’s also 3D modeling software. A free option is Blender, but I just couldn’t get a grip on it (seriously, I tried, lol). I ended up dropping entirely too much money on Zbrush. I also use Mudbox to paint the tattoos I make directly onto the model. The tattoos are designed in Photoshop, but arranged in Mudbox.

All this adds up to time and money and patience and practice. Practice.Practice.Practice. I’d imagine it’s like that with any type of art.

Again, I’m not trying to chase anybody away. It really is fun. And I love being able to show people how I’ve always envisioned these characters in my head. Folks especially seem to like my version of Theron, lol. But, it’s also a cautionary tale…because I got in over my head with the money. Thankfully, it’s the one hobby I’ve been spending money on at the moment, so I’ll be okay, lol. But, when I started this journey, I had no idea. None. You see this advertisement for FREE software and then you find out that it’s really not free, lol. Like, at all. It’s also why I’d love for there to be interest in adopting some of my peeps...because it would be hella-nice to make back some of my crazy investment, if only a drop in the giant-ass bucket, lol.

Allen’s Rambling: Playing a Fighting Game for Story (Under Night In-Birth)

Recently, I got my hands on Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st], or UNIEST for short, a fighting game I’ve been looking forward to playing for almost half a year now. I know Dragonball Fighter Z is the fighting game that everyone cares about at the moment, but this is a game I’ve been wanting a little more... and DBFZ has too many problems with its... everything as a fighting game (a lacking tutorial, a tragically basic challenge mode, not explaining tools for high-level play within the game, etc.). So, I feel like talking about UNIEST for a bit while I’m taking a break from its Chronicle Mode, give my first impressions and all that now that I’ve only got about 7 prologues left to get through. Hopefully I won’t Ramble on about this, but... we’ll see. Yeah too late, I rambled, as usual... jeez, saying that phrase tends screws me over way to much and gives me a butt load of editing to do. But anyway, here goes.

Expanding and Explain the Lore

I like how Chronicle Mode gives us much more context to the arcade mode. It’s sort of the reverse of how Guilty Gear Xrd did it’s arcade and story modes. Rather than the Arcade mode being the prologue to the story mode, the story mode explains what is going on in everyone’s arcade mode, with each new prologue giving more and more context to each character and the setting overall. Every character has their own little prologue selection that goes on for about 3 to 4 chapters that explains their motives and past, with each prologue in itself being about 1 to 2 hours long depending on your reading speed. The only exception at this point seems to be Vatista, who is moreso giving exposition to the lore of the world in her prologue chapters. That’s harmless overall given her role in the story is more of an observer than an actual character moving the plot, and her own Arcade mode being her finally going out and observing things.

While the game was coming out I often found myself jokingly thinking that the world of UNIEST was going to be some extension of the Nasuverse given the inclusion of Sion as a character. Though I was joking at the time it really feels like Nasu had his hand in this series in terms of writing, as I see some of the same issues I had when playing Fate/Extella.

I have two major issues with the game as far as its story mode and writing is concerned: the pacing, and the localization.

Pacing

This is where most of the Nasuverse comparisons come from. Now to be fair to UNIEST, “bad pacing” is kind of a subjective critique nowadays due to it being thrown out far too much for its own good (my own posts and critiques not helping), so I’ll say that the pacing just feels slow to me personally. I feel like there’s too much idle chatter going on with people talking about things that aren’t important to the plot. For an example, in Orie’s prologue she’s talking to her friend/partner Lex about moving to Kanzakai, the location of the game. They discuss a bit about the mission, Orie goes into thought about her opinions of it, we learn a lot about Orie’s personality and nature when she isn’t in Licht Kreis Mode and slaying Voids, and so on. This is fine, but sometimes it felt like their friendly conversations about sweets, fashion, what restaurant to eat at, and adjusting to Japanese customs felt more like padding at times than characterization. This is all fine on paper, as it expands on both Orie and Lex’s personality, and it does lead to some interested interactions with Wagner when she appears, but for me it just feel like it drags. The main takeaways from Orie’s prologue is that she’s going to Kanzakai on an undercover/infiltration mission to learn about Amnesia and Paradox, work as something close to Wagner’s probation officer and make sure she doesn’t go to wild, and show off her personality when she isn’t in Licht Kreis Mode. The extra bits just feel unneeded to an extent. You could just skip to the restaurant scene after Orie and Lex get to Kanzakai, cut out half the dialogue about cakes and uniforms, and things would flow a little better. Though... that’s just my own opinion.

I think a better prologue that did this sort of small talk/tangent thing well was Yuzuriha’s and Wagner’s. In Yurzuriha’s prologue we learn that she’s reluctantly the In-Birth Guardian of Kanzakai due to her older sister losing her powers on her first day of the job, and that while she knows that big things are going down in the city and is knowledgeable the Hallow Night, she’d rather just do nothing to draw attention to herself and keeps the peace by slowly crushing any rising powers making a ruckus. We also learn about the formation of Bankikai and #BestBoy Ogre. The writing goes into its usual smaller conversations and small talk, but it works a lot better in this case. Yuzuriha going on and explaining the Hallow Night in depth to Ogre makes since due to her wanting to make sure he understands that forming organizations will only worsen the situation as rising powers clash and only give rise to more Voids and more In-Births to create an endless cycle. It also shows that as knowledgeable as she is about it, Yuzuriha doesn’t give a damn about what goes on in the Hallow Night outside of keeping the peace and is only explaining things to Ogre because she doesn’t want to deal with him later... and she only had a broom to fight with at the time. On Ogre’s end, he was the type of character to make small talk, flirt, and go on long, hammy spiels about his goals, which constantly annoyed Yuzuriha, but it played well with the tone of the scenes and honestly made Ogre very endearing.

Speaking of endearing characters, the writing style of the prologues also helped Wagner’s character well too. She’s the newest playable character that I was personally interested in learning about. Wagner’s name actually came up several times in the the arcade modes of the previous game. From what we knew she was a mix of a merciless Templar that slaughtered anyone and everyone under the name of Licht Kreis, a wildcard that was Licht Kreis’s ace in the hole, and someone that Orie either feared, despised, or saw as a rival of some kind. The main takeaways from her prologue is that she is on probation after “overdoing it” in a past mission and has to live in Japan to cool her head with two attendants managing/confiscating her sword and shield, and while she personally views Orie as a rival Orie herself just sees her as a dangerous person that’s a pain to deal with. Those were the takeways, but the prologue does a lot to humanize Wagner and make her an interesting character. When not in Licht Kreis Mode she’s actually very endearing, being someone that knows little about society outside of battle. She struggles with academics due to her not liking the structure of Japanese schools, but slowly loving the more social aspect of it. She has a slight dependence on her attendants for more social activities. She’s a horrible actor to the point that her undercover backstory was that of being a shelter rich girl so she didn’t have to force herself to act in anyway and blow her cover. It’s all humanizing stuff from someone that was hyped up as a fiery, brutal killer of Voids throughout the series. She’s just... a socially awkward rich girl outside of battle, and it’s pretty enduring.

And just before I move on to talk about the localization I’ll just say that Carmine and Enkidu’s prologues could had easily been two chapters instead of three. The long conversations and small talk were just... out of character for those two, Carmine especially, though he is a lot more likable to me now, and Enkidu might just be my favorite character story-wise for his simplicity and how he bounces off Chaos and Hilda in Amnesia.

Now then...

The Localization

The localization... is terrible.

No, I’m not kidding, this is some godawful localizing. Spell check apparently didn’t even exist when translating this script. Seriously, take a shot everytime you see a spelling or grammar error. Actually, don’t do that, you’ll die before you finish the first prologue. I mean... jeez, I know mistakes happen, and my own writings tend to be riddled with grammar issues here and there, but the amount I’m seeing here is just inexcusable. The misspellings especially. Serious, was spell check a thing when they translated this? Especially since there’s no dub every moment of grammar errors and misspellings seems more egregious. Reading these cutscenes and visual novel moments are a pain when I have to figure out what a character is actually saying. Which brings me to another issue.

There’s no dub, and that rustles my jimmies something fierce.

I don’t care how controversial it is for me to talk about this anymore. I don’t care how little the FGC cares for dubs and stories in fighting games. I don’t care about EVO, NorCal, SoCal, or anything other bull excuse used for a proper lacking localization. I kept my mouth shut about this when it came to Blazblue and Guilty Gear outside of some grumbles and general reactive whining, but now I’m actually pissed. There was no excuse this time for lacking a dub here, especially with the large window of time between the JP and NA release dates.

For those that are curious, it was about 6 months. I remember Arc System saying something to the effect of having to delay Blazblue Central Fiction by about 6 month if they were to dub it. Six months... and this game has much less story stuff going on than in Blazblue. I remember people saying that BBCF needed to come out sooner so people outside of Japan could train for EVO. Folks, anyone that gives a damn about fighting games on a competitive level will import unless the time gap is a week’s difference or less. Period. Everyone else will either just do local tournaments, or is playing casually by extension of the more series side of the FGC. And frankly, EVO tends to be dominated by Japanese players anyway, so... I’m narrowing my eyes when I hear things like that. When this game had such a large time gap I think most of us figured it was for a dub, especially with Dragonball Fighter Z coming out just barely a month beforehand. However... no such luck, this game was basically delayed, had a poor release time, and I’m willing to bet money it was so this game could flop and they’d have an excuse to probably not dub Cross Tag Battle due to low interest in what would be one fourth of that game’s rooster (technically one eighth, but that’s a Rambling for another day).

Ugh, but I won’t whine about that any further, continuing to type this is only making me angrier... moving on.

Themes of Under Night

Now what kind of writer would I be if I didn’t at least try to talk about the narrative themes of UNIEST’s story? I’ll be honest. I’m having a hard time thinking of its themes. Not that it doesn’t have any mind you, but... I can’t really place my finger on it yet. Maybe it’s because I haven’t completed Chronicle Mode yet, but there is a theme in this game’s story.

And it’s probably something really Japanese.

I’m not just saying that because this is a Japanese Anime Fighting Game, but... the story is constantly drilling in how peaceful Japan is despite how combative the Hallow Night is by nature. Wald and Enkidu are constantly going on about how they feel out of play being warriors in such peaceful times. Carmine talks about how hard it is to be a street punk picking fights in modern times. Orie and Wagner are bring up how peaceful and different Japan is compared to the warzones they’ve been in while in Licht Kreis. The list goes on, but the fact that this story takes place in a peaceful country like Japan is drilled into you. I still have quite a few characters to finish in terms of prologues, but... there’s something, some kind of commentary on peace and violence. Chaos heavily stresses that Amnesia never goes too far to kill people in these modern times in Enkidu’s prologue, Gordeu remarks how fights aren’t to the death despite the tension between warring groups.

There’s... something here, but I can’t put my finger on it, probably due to my Western origins and beliefs. I’m sure if I talked about this with my Xenny might be able to piece together something since he’s learning the language and I get the feeling the theme might be lost in translation somewhere, but... for now, it’s all speculation until I finish the prologues.

As a game overall, this is a huge improvement to the original Under Night. There’s an in depth tutorial mode, there’s a Mission Mode to learn combos, there’s an network mode that’s leagues better than DBFZ at this point in terms of structure and netcode. If anyone in the FGC felt a little burnt by how Dragonball Fighter Z handled things like the tutorial and challenge mode and just generally not providing things for high-level play, I highly recommend giving UNIEST a shot, especially if you’re interested in Blazblue Cross Tag Battle.

Lastly, I would a moment of silence for Ogre, who has a great character design, interesting personality, had the coolest name for a special ability (Gate of Hades), but will never be playable due to... plot reasons. Farewell playboy fedora man, I would had definitely subbed you if you were playable.

Okay well, idk if this discussion draft is as satisfying for anyone else as it is for me, because with a whole semester of this bullshit the hatred I now have for evolutionary psychology, this class, and this professor knows no bounds, but this response I’ve written to the ‘evaluate what you’ve learned in this class’ type question is definitely satisfying and I want Eugenics Scrooge to read it. As long as I don’t fail the final Monday I should be able to post anything I want with no grade repercussions. The only problem is that I’ve lost any grasp of reality in this class and I truly can’t tell whether this is too much, or honestly if it’s not enough and I should bash evo psych even more.

Discussion: Please answer the following four (4) questions:

1. How convinced are you of the tenets of evolutionary psychology? 2. Do you think you will use the information you learned from this class personally in your lives? 3. Does knowing about our ultimate motivations allow us to become untethered from them or override them? 4. If we adopted these tenets fully (in other words if it was all common knowledge for everyone), how would life as we know it change?

1. I am not at all convinced of the tenets of evolutionary psychology. To be entirely honest, I think the vast majority of the discipline is extremely misdirected. I like science because I seek to understand the way the world is. I feel it is important to examine phenomena in an objective, empirical way that is based on attempting to understand the the way things are, not the way the scientist thinks they should be. This is a common criticism of evolutionary psychology; that conclusions are drawn first and data is often bent to match the biases the researcher wants to be true. This can look like real science, until one digs into statistical data, confounding variables, sociocultural influences, etc., and then it becomes clear that often studies that do this are simply fictions the author is trying to pass as fact. I have found this criticism to be valid based on my experience with the tenets of evolutionary psychology. Nothing presented in this class or in my outside readings on evolutionary psychology has convinced me that this is not what evolutionary psychology does. In the future I will stick with disciplines that avoid post-hoc reasoning and do follow more evidence based methods to explain human behavior using evolutionary theory, such as evolutionary biology, behavioral ecology, and anthropology.

2. No. Except that I now know to avoid most evo psych, because while the discipline in principle sounds like the perfect science for me and my scientific interests, the lack of verifiable fact and the infusion of bigotry into the discipline as a whole has completely put me off the subject. I have become very disappointed in evolutionary psychology. Before taking this class I thought that criticisms of evolutionary psychology were similar to criticisms of other evolutionary sciences- that many people do not like evolutionary theory, for various reasons such as religion or misunderstandings about genetic determinism. Now, I have learned that while some people often have problems with the "evolution" in evolutionary psychology, at least as much if not more of the criticism comes from scientists who agree with the "evolution" part, but are against things more along the lines of evolutionary psychology's tendency to embrace negative biases about human nature, and to ignore relevant information from other disciplines such as proximal explanations for behavior and anthropological evidence of what the EEA was like. I do like that in this class we emphasized that it takes environment and genetics to determine traits, that genetic determinism isn't everything, so I will continue to use that information to explain phenomena. But I already had adopted that into my world view, before this semester as I've already learned this in anthropology and other psychology classes previously.

3. Not entirely, but it can help, as long as the facts regarding such motivations are solid in the first place. Also, often environment needs to change, and this isn't always possible in everyday life.

I also think that it is easy to misapply explanations of negative behavior, and this is done far too often. Social Darwinism applies evolutionary theory to behavior, but is almost always agreed by social scientists to be a horrible idea because of the negative effects it can have on marginalized groups and the "weak" members of society. Social Darwinists are often supporters both of direct eugenics and of less direct eugenics, by removing all social support so that those who are not "fittest" (such as sick, disabled, or poor people) will die off as they "naturally should." I can not and will not accept theories based on bad science when they advocate for members of society, such as disabled people, LGBT+ people, poor people, people of color, etc. to die due to misinterpretations and misapplications of evolution to society.

4. Well frankly that would be terrifying, going off what we've learned in class. When evolutionary psychology borders on or actually supports and tries to justify eugenics, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, and racism, I have to question my previous assumption that creationists were the more dangerous of the two. People who deny evolutionary theory may be less dangerous than people who misinterpret and misuse it.

1. What’s your biggest pet peeve?

Not a lot of things really deeply bother me. But I feel helpless soul crushing despair and annoyance whenever capitalism/corporate attitudes lead to certain behaviors.

Mostly in the world of software and business. There’s so much wasted potential and inefficiency because we need to maintain intellectual property and turn a profit.

The same sort of thing happens in the pharmaceutical sector. You see huge premiums paid for products that, for the good of our species, should be accessible to anyone, not privatized to line someone’s pockets.

That just really fucking bothers me.

2. What one fear would you like to conquer?

Probably going outside or talking to strangers or something mundane like that.

3. What’s your favourite song lyric and why?

This changes on a near monthly basis but these AJJ lyrics are currently my favourite:

It’d be really cool to be a well known open source developer. Someone famous for giving up the ability to turn a profit in favour of making the world a better place. Like the vision that Tim Berners-Lee had for a freely accessible internet, or what Tesla wanted for electricity.

About a year ago I told my hairdresser I’d be good with anything and she gave me a hitler youth style undercut. I didn’t mind it but it was not a good idea at all.

Go out there and fucking lose. Try a lot and fail a lot. Don’t be ashamed of it.

I also cope with getting rid of physical things by taking and storing a lot of pictures of them.

Nobody. That would be cruel. Someone would have to pick up my life without knowing what I know. They wouldn’t be able to have meaningful interactions with my friends or family. They wouldn’t be able to do my job. It’d be lonely and they’d be destroying my life as I do the same to theirs.

37. What’s the story behind your first name?

It’s the long-form version of my grandfather’s name. Kurt is apparently short for Konrad.

I got to talking about it with a friend of mine one night, and we came up with a story that, frankly, I think most of us wanted to see at the beginning, but I will post them here anyway. First, a bit of an explanation.

If I ever seem disproportionately angry about the direction of Hi-Evo, it’s because a lot of the problems in this trilogy are the fault of bad writing and a poor development phase. Being an aspiring author myself, I have a tendency to pick apart story lines and can spot what does and doesn’t make sense. I do this in my own writing all the time, which is why I’m still editing my historicals for publication. If I reuploaded them now, they would read very differently.

This trilogy could easily be fixed if Dai Sato just had an editor to rein him in or tell him what works and what doesn’t. I’ll be honest: part of me doesn’t want to believe Sato is really behind this since he makes so much other good content otherwise. And if his Otaquest interview is to be believed, I think he was bent over a desk to work on this. It’s clear from his tone that he’s on this project because he has to be, not because he wants to be.

In addition, given the really schizophrenic advertising this movie trilogy has gotten and the sometimes laughably dissonant tones of the two films so far, I think this trilogy went through development hell. I will talk about this a little more later, but suffice it to say that I suspect one or both films’ plots were changed at the last minute (which would also explain the really shoddy writing) and the animation and art direction in both films make that painfully obvious.

If you’re interested to see how I would have structured this, read on below the cut (some spoilers follow).

Before, we get to my dream trilogy, we need to talk about why I think the current trilogy doesn’t work from a storytelling perspective. Don’t worry, I’ll keep this short.

Of course, HE 3 hasn’t been made yet, so I can’t say for sure how it will all tie together, but at the moment, nothing in this trilogy feels truly connected. The two entries we’ve seen feel like completely different films and one of them comes off as an original film that was changed to fit into E7 at the last minute. The first one is a rushed recap film that tells a new version of old events in the TV series, and the second one effectively renders the first one null to resurrect dead characters in the sequel as well as bringing in the lazy plot device of dimension-hopping, clearly aping from AO.

So, to remedy the problem, here is how I would have structured this trilogy, with a short explanation for each.

Hi-Evolution 1: A full “prequel,” detailing Eureka’s origins and her time in the Federation military with both Adrock Thurston and Holland Novak. The movie would climax with the First Summer of Love and Adrock’s death and end near Renton’s desertion of the Gekkostate (episode 21-22).

The first film should have followed Eureka’s perspective, not Renton’s. I mean, hell, Eureka’s face was on the fucking poster for the first film, so the fact it was almost solely about Renton is just baffling. The way the film was originally billed and marketed, this is what I and I think many others were expecting to see. Instead, we have a recap film that uses the first 20 minutes for an event that should really be used for a climax. This would also fall more in line with Renton’s supposed obsession about finding out about his father, as Kyoda once hinted at in the runup to the film.

Hi-Evolution 2: A “recap” of most of the OG series with some updated and streamlined parts, told from Anemone’s perspective. Some plot points may change such as Anemone chasing after Eureka in the skyfall scene from episode 26, and both she and Dominic deserting to Gekkostate after learning Dewey’s intentions. Chronologically, the film would end at or near the 45-47 episode mark of the original series.

Okay, now I know people will jump down my throat for this since I have criticized clipshows/recap films, but hear me out.

Recap films can work, but HE 1 doesn’t. It comes out clunky, disorganized, and rushed. But if a recap film followed a true “prequel,” it would make much more sense and be easier for the audience to accept. This particular structure would not only make use of stock footage (hopefully remastered and reformatted into 16:9) but it would also be interspersed with new footage showing Dominic and Anemone, as the rest of the anime would play out from her perspective. The “playback” motif would make more sense here as well, since it can be told post-series in the form of recollections from Anemone, Dominic, or both.

HE 2 as is just does not work. The only way it could work is if it or the first film is told from Eureka’s perspective because that way we can more easily empathize with her when she is revealed to be the villain. How it plays out originally gives the audience no reason to care about her since she is barely on-screen in HE 1 and is with Renton even less. Developing their romance is important, else it will not feel genuine to the viewer.

In addition, this film would actually build and add more to Anemone’s character, which HE 2 completely fails to do. I had some hopes for HE 2 since Anemone was always a character I thought could use more exploration. The film could have easily used its time to give Anemone a proper backstory, explain how she came to the Federation military and show us the experiments to which she was subjected. Instead, HE 2 gives us a completely different Anemone, a cutesy, peppy Japanese girl joining the military to avenge her father’s death. In other words, a generic moeblob heroine.

Hi-Evolution 3: The real “sequel,” showing events of the final leg of the OG series and events post-series, wrapping up the story for good. All characters’ fates would be resolved or explained, giving them the necessary development. Gekkostate is disbanded, Dominic and Anemone work to restructure the military, and Eureka and Renton start a new life together, maybe having a child.

This has the most flexibility, depending on how long the film would be. It would focus not only on Renton and Eureka but on Anemone and Dominic as well if the “recap” film doesn’t add any enough information regarding them. The sequel can even be told from a different character’s perspective (like Holland’s) if need be.

This would do the one thing that is holding this trilogy back: cut out all the unnecessary timelines and start from a clean slate, which is frankly what it should have done to begin with. Hi-Evolution should have just built from what worked before and what people actually liked, forgetting everything else.

I will go into more detail about why Hi-Evolution failed in a separate post once the third film drops, but for now, those are my thoughts on how this trilogy should have played out.

Top Twelve Favorite Uranium Pokemon

After I posted my review of Uranium, I felt bad because I don’t think I highlighted the good fakemon enough and spent a lot of time discussing the bad ones. So I wanted to show off some of the coolest ones I ran across in the game. This favorites list is based on the design and concept of the pokemon and not necessarily their stats or abilities.

Apologies for a few of these pics looking a bit janky and weird, I need to still evolve/catch those in my save game before taking proper screencaps.

1.) Linkite

Pretty sure this is my favorite fakemon of the whole game. It has simple, striking imagery. It’s clearly a ghost-type based on the Substitute doll; the idea behind it is that it is the spirit of a pokemon that died while in its pokeball. It’s a dark idea without going too overboard, and it’s quite creepy and disturbing and just darn clever. Wanted to use in my playthrough but stats are super-bad and only way it can evolve is via trading, which I couldn’t do with my copy of the game at the time.

2.) Metalynx

While I do not care for the look of the Water and Fire starters, nor do I think much of Metalynx’s pre-evolution, I feel Metalynx itself is an excellent design. It’s unqiue and creative, and looks quite badass, and it served me well in my playthrough. I have noted elsewhere I think the floral pattern on his back looks a bit out-of-place and silly (I assume it was an attempt to tie in the whole ‘he’s a grass type, really!’ thing) but that’s my only little nitpick. The Mega form is quite nice too.

3.) Nucleon

The pokemon itself is very overpowered with its ability (Atomizate, like Pixelate but with Nuclear typing) + Hyper Voice, especially with a choice scarf, so it can actually be pretty boring to use. I’m also a bit miffed I didn’t teach my Eevee Shadow Ball before it evolved into Nucleon, because in terms of non-Normal/Nuclear Special moves, Shadow Ball really is the best. But Nucleon can’t learn it, only Eevee can. I had to stick with flippin’ Hidden Power.

Anyway! Point is, the design is very beautiful.

4.) Gargryph

l really love the concept behind this poke. When you visit the town you get one from, there are these statues all over the place and only later do you discover they’re alive. They’re obviously based on gargoyles, (or a ‘grotesque’ if you wanna be pedantic) specifically one that looks like a griffin. It’s actually really surprising Pokemon has never had anything resembling a griffin before. That’s a shame, because they’re really cool mythical beasts. This pokemon has a cool Ability called Rebuild, which restores a little HP if it wasn’t hit by an attack that turn. It complements a walling-pokemon style very nicely, especially one with Protect that carries Leftovers to maximize that recovery.

Unfortunately, this guy’s only good stat is its physical defense. Being a pure Rock type, it’s weak to so many special attacks it’s pretty damn difficult to use it effectively. But I still like the idea behind it as a walling/support poke, even if I could never get it to work. The sprite looks surprisingly really nice, too! One of the best in the game.

5.) Navighast

This is a Ghost/Fighting type, based on undead/cursed pirates. My first impression (its pre-evos are Swabone and Skelerogue) was that it looked too similar to Cubone/Marowak. And there are indeed strong similarities. But as it evolves it becomes more and more unique from that, and the idea behind it is different and really cool. The game features a rivalry between sea-faring ninjas and pirates, so some of the pokemon reflect that theme, this being the pirate-side of things. And who couldn’t love a pirate-themed pokemon? Besides, the typing combo is admittedly very fun.

6.) Firoke

This game has three lines of bug types that are closely related and become entwined in a truly awesome subplot. Obviously you can guess this is right up my alley-- that subplot was my favorite part of the game. Of the three elemental bug lines, I would say Smore/Firoke ended up with the best design. It’s also quite exciting to have a Fire/Bug type (only one of those in real pokemon), and a red ant is perfect for that. Its sprite is also the least weird-looking of the bugs and actually quite decent.

7.) Stenowatt

It be an electric raptor. What more do I need to say? :P I love the color combination and the design. Also feathered dinos make me happy.

8.) Empirilla

This game includes some fan-made evolutions of real pokemon. This ‘lil fellah is actually pretty neat, and prob. my favorite of the evolutions from real pokes. I never much liked Primeape, and Empirilla looks way neater to me, so it’s an improvement in my mind. It also relates back to the original designs well.

9.) Baaschaf

This black sheep is perhaps understated in its strength, as the design is nothing extreme or dramatic. Rather, it’s just a very solid design. It fits into the pokemon universe well, and differentiates itself just fine from Mareep’s line.

10.) Raffiti

So, yes, this is absolutely a Smeargle clone. But that’s OK because it’s BETTER than Smeargle’s design, which I never liked, haha. Also its stats are better than Smeargle’s, too. Plus it’s pure Dark type! That’s pretty neat.

11.) Geigeroach

Obviously my bug bias is clear here. But, c’mon. Nuclear cockroach. I would have been gravely disappointed if such a thing wasn’t included in the game. I should point out the thing is nigh impossible to actually use in battle; dual Something/Nuclear types always carry a buttload of x2 and x4 weaknesses, due to the nature of Nuclear typing, and if you combine that with a type that already has a lot of weaknesses, it’s only making it worse. Its stats are also poopy. So, yeah, you ain’t using this guy. But DANG DUDE the design is cool.

12.) Lavent

The stats are underwhelming, but I appreciate that this one’s based off geothermal vents and giant tube worms. An area that was just begging for a pokemon, honestly!

Honorable Mentions:

These are pokemon you can receive as eggs, either from an NPC or from the local Pokemon Professor for dex progress. I’m only placing them as HMs because I didn’t know about them until post-game, but they really are among the coolest designs.

Gellin

This thing reminds me so much of an Ultra Beast. (I’m pretty sure these were designed well before Sun/Moon was a thing.) After all, Ultra Beasts look . . . super weird and not like typical pokemon at all. It’s really damn hard to define exactly what an Ultra Beast looks like. But that *point* that thing does. It also has a weird unexpected type combo the way a lot of Ultra Beasts do-- this one is Grass/Electric.

Luxelong & Oblivicorn

The Dragon/Fairy Luxelong and the Fairy unicorn line that can lead to the Normal Kiricorn or the Dark Oblivicorn are both damn cool, and it’s kind of a shame I didn’t know about them until it was too late. I guess it’s motivation for the post-game, if I get around to it!
