Imagine you're an ex-evangelical high schooler who's been out for all of one year and is living with your girlfriend's family because you got kicked out of your homophobic parents' house. This girlfriend is the one who helped you realize you're gay - she held your hand as you cut ties with your church.

As well as being gay, you're also a forgetful, impulsive kid who has a really hard time getting your mouth to agree with your brain. You have ADHD, but you aren't diagnosed and you'd probably deny the idea of it were brought up. Nonetheless, these traits have historically given you a hard time not just in school, but in terms of making and keeping friends, too.

Sophomore year, you go on a huge trip with your girlfriend, and after a lot of miscommunication, conflict, and reconciliation, she dumps you. It's on as good of terms as you could hope for; you know you'll be heartbroken for months, but it isn't a fight, and she doesn't hold anything against you. She tells you that it's because she needs a bit more stability in a partner; someone who's going to be better able to center her needs when the situation calls for it. This stings - you know you weren't the best partner on this trip. Like always, you said the wrong thing, and the stressful situations you found yourselves in exacerbated your fights. She's telling you the same thing everyone does; you don't try hard enough. You don't care.

You move on. You have a super busy summer with your best friends and they help you work through it, as best you can. Things get better, and you decide to start taking better care of yourself. You're still living with ex-gf's family, but ex-gf is out of the country getting into politics. She's trying to build a grassroots movement to help the members of her religion start divesting from their involvement with that evangelical church that raised you. It's a noble calling.

When junior year starts, you and your friends start getting bullied & harassed by this girl. There's a lot going on there, but whenever you confront her, all she does is talk about how little you care; how easy you have it; you lazy you are. All the worst versions of the things everyone always tells you, spar in your face. The nice teachers pity you, thinking of you like You're not a full person. The mean ones call you a slacker and a class clown. This girl combines the two; she snipe's at you about how easy your life must be because you've managed to trick your friends into thinking you give a shit. All this while you're in danger of being expelled, and tanking your friends' grades on your way down. All this while you attend school *solely* for their sake. All this while you're trying harder than you ever have before, and it's only barely working.

Over winter break your junior year, you decide to visit ex-gf with your friends. You feel better about things with her, and even though school and that bully are stressing you out, you think it'll be a nice time. When you get off the bus to the small town where she lives now, you're led to the center of her political movement - a megachurch.

Not an abandoned building. Not some old rundown thing they've commandeered, or a repurposed space they rent for their own ends. No; a brand new evangelical megachurch, that your ex gf had a hand in designing.

You question her about it, and she gets snippy with you. She asks what do you mean this is wrong? What do you mean she's clearly becoming the exact thing she set out trying to overthrow? This isn't a megachurch! It's just a sign that their movement is popular!

Then you meet her girlfriend. And you know something? She seems nice enough. She's a lot like you, actually - she's kind of forgetful, and impulsive. She has a hard time with words, like you. Thing is though - she's also the daughter of a famous evangelical minister. And guess who paid for this church.

Yeah, so it turns out your GF left you, citing your forgetfulness and lack of ability to demonstrate care to her satisfaction as reasons why. She then turned around and got together with someone who can be generously described as "you but rich," and then set about becoming a spokesperson for the same homophobic church she told you to become homeless running from.

Tracker is a hypocrite and a bootlicker, is what I'm saying.

I really want to know what precisely was going through the Doctor’s head when the Master was refusing to regenerate. Like, he was the Master. He had escaped death time and time again, even jumping from body to body of other species, going to the Cheetah World, using a Deathworm Morphant, and trying repeatedly to steal the Doctor's body.

This guy clung to life like a cockroach. He survived the Time War, execution, the end of his natural regeneration cycle, and so much more, and here he was, refusing to regenerate...out of spite.

You can see the desperation on the Doctor’s face and hear it in their voice as they realize that no, the Master's not going to save themself. And I will never be over this scene.

it's heartbreaking listening to ben talk about how much he identifies with outsiders, people who are different, people who are othered and don't fit in with who other people think they should be.

it's heartbreaking to hear him talk about how badly his childhood fucked him up. how he has abandonment and trust issues. how he went to therapy because how he was treated as a kid fucked him up so badly, he literally cannot remember huge chunks of his past because his brain, trying to preserve some sense of self, shut down and blocked it out.

but it's empowering and heartening to hear him take institutions like private schools and the armed forces and their ilk to task. to call out the classism and the snobbery and the grown men who bullied and belittled him. they are archaic. they are ridiculous. they are abusive. they are staffed by elitists who train and groom impressionable kids to become the next generation of out-of-touch elitist to keep that "good old boys" club going. molding kids into government drones, yes-men or politicians to keep anyone who wasn't born with a silver spoon in their mouth down.

it's empowering to hear him talk as someone who was forced inside the ivory tower, hated everything it stood for, and is ready to raze it to the ground.

he wasn't made for that. you watch anything he's written and you know he has compassion and feels deeply and has some fucking humanity about him. giving a voice to stories that we never got to hear. i'm glad he walked away from what it seems like every adult in his life was trying to push him into. i'm glad he gets to be himself.

i think the thing that bothers me the most about the.... "resolution" of naoto's character arc in persona 4 is not simply that they "aren't really trans," but the way they weakly attempt to explain this. They really brush it away as "ohhh guys they really did want to be a woman this whole time!" when instead if you read it closely, it feels a lot more like them feeling like "i really do wish i was born a man, but that's just not the case, so i have to swallow my pride, accept my circumstances and deal with how it is." which... sucks, and is probably why they try to explain it away in a way that doesn't feel right or connected well.

we've seen stories be able to execute just fine the sort of plot where a character has to pretend to be a man for a certain reason and in the meantime is also struggling with gender roles, while still very likely being a cis woman, like mulan. the thing about naoto that's different is that being a different gender than the one they were assigned at birth ties heavily into their life... they connect it very emotionally to the characters in fiction that they looked up to, and i mean come on, the true feelings their shadow said in the TV really say it all... naoto is willing to go to extreme lengths to present as a man, permanently, and it's weird to think they'd have all these feelings and desires just simply because their working field is misogynistic and they just had to do it to get far in their field, or whatever.

Whenever I go back to the Murderbot Diaries book series it’s very comforting. Part of this is because I’ve listened to the books so many times and I know what is going to happen. But the familiarity isn’t just ‘I know these words,’ I also feel very seen in the text.

SecUnit isn’t like the people around it, the people it cares about. And it doesn’t want to be. The crux of the series is navigating an array of challenges that stem from the fact that SecUnit doesn’t want to be human, but it still deserves rights and autonomy and it isn’t wrong to feel these things. 

In one of the books we get the line

“I don’t want to be human.”

Dr. Mensah said, “That’s not an attitude a lot of humans are going to understand. We tend to think that because a bot or a construct looks human, its ultimate goal would be to become human.”

“That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.”

The fight for personhood has to do with rights, not for being person-like. The point is not to change SecUnit, the point is that the system has been abusing SecUnit.

This is part of what makes me feel seen (the rest of the being seen is all in the autistic coding of our lovely SecUnit). Because I don’t want to be different than I am, at least not in most ways. 

I want to be met where I am at. 

Other neurodiverse and disabled folks **EDIT** *AND QUEER FOLKS I CAN’T BELIEVE I DIDN’T THINK OF THAT UNTIL PEOPLE POINTED IT OUT!!* have voiced this same idea I don’t need to be like you to have personhood, my personhood should not hinge on whether you ‘get’ me.

Through the book we SEE people, humans and bots, meeting SecUnit where it is at. When it tells the Preservation crew or ART that it dislikes eye contact they don’t try to make eye contact with SecUnit, they give it drones to look through so it can continue to AVOID eye contact. We also see SecUnit meeting other bots where they are at, communicating in the languages native to their processing systems. It’s so lovely.
