obsessed with your latest steddie au! steve’s relationship with his parents is so emotionally abusive and manipulative and my heart is breaking that nobody seems to recognise that
Thank you!!
I really wanted to focus on how Steve's parents are abusive in a way that is a lot harder to clock.
They're not out there screaming and kicking him out of the house. These people want you to like them, and they lie like they breath.
These are the adults who downplay serious issues, who make you doubt yourself, who smooth things over or even apologize on your behalf as a way to control and isolate you.
If everyone thinks you're terrible, and your amazing, doting, angelic parents are once again swooping in to save you, then your escape routes close up rapidly--which is of course, the whole point. They want their victims to rely on them and them alone.
For a lot of the Party, that's just not an evil they've encountered yet.
Throw in the fact that Steve does in fact, have a head injury, and things get muddy FAST.
It makes for delicious, angst-ridden scenarios and I am delighted everyone's happy to come along for the ride.

okay, inspired by @dragon-spaghetti's chronic pain Husk headcanons, I present Angel with atypical migraines
Angel getting knocked off balance after a few grueling weeks at the studio (because stress makes them worse), but like with the kind of vertigo that makes you feel like you're floating and untethered, but not spinning
Husk notices when something's off because Angel will stand up from the bar and pause with a hand outstretched before he starts walking, like he needs to recalibrate real quick
he lays on top of Husk with his face in Husk's chest because it's dark and then he'll forbid Husk from moving because that makes it worse, so Husk just kinda rests a hand on his back while they cuddle

jumping off the back of the post about genres of song lyrics, another thing about tmbg's lyrics in particular is that even when they write about pleasant themes, they still manage to frequently do so through a sinister lens:
the experience of having children and looking after them:
a nice little nightlight protecting a child muses on the shortcomings it would have outside its assigned responsibility:
fantasising about getting high in the park with your crush:

Mikhail and Vitali were inseparable; when they weren’t studying or getting into fights, they would hang out at Mikhail’s place to smoke and get drunk on cheap rum and vodka, to then pass out in each other’s arms and sleep most of the next day away.
They promised each other— no matter what would happen— they would never leave each other’s side. Yet after starting university and college respectively, they did not see each other for a little over six years, leaving them both heartbroken and wondering what went wrong.

I would say that Troj has spent Christmas learning the concept of stealing, except it's not so much stealing as it is helping herself to things she doesn't realize aren't hers?
Got up one morning, let the dogs into my mother's living room, came in a few minutes later to find Troj snuffling on the couch. The other dogs casually dispersed. Cookie tray on the table noticeably thinner than the night before. I realize belatedly that Troj is CHEWING and confiscate the soggy end of a krumkake, at which point my mother comes in, and we begin to discuss possible culprits, as the only known thief in the household is Sparta and Sparta is, for once, looking fairly innocent.
As we go through our options (Sparty but sneakier than usual, Melis but a bit short to reach the table, not Luna as she wouldn't eat it if you fed it to her, Troj has never taken anyting off my plate ever) Troj looks at me. And my mother. And the cookie tray.
And she very, very slowly she puts her paw on the table.
I tell her NO.TROJA.DOWN. and she backs off. And looks at me. Flicks her ears. And then she slowly. Deliberately. Tries one more time.
