I've gotten into audio books mostly, given my migraines, but am excited to reported I'm healing well enough to read physical books again.

I Am Malala: A Review

I must admit that I have a terrible habit of waiting to enjoy media until long after it's stopped trending. This isn't on purpose; I just take a while to get around to things.

I Am Malala, the autobiography of the famous girl's education activist Malala Yousafzai, is now over ten years old. You may remember Yousafzai as the girl who got shot by the Taliban for going to school. While that event made her world famous, it was not the catalist that turned her into the leader and speaker she is today. This book not only explains her story, but it also teaches readers so much about the culture and history of Pakistan.

Now, I am an American, and the American media tends to depict the many countries and cultures in the Middle East in a homogenous, unflattering light, to say the least. Yousafzai's book painted a whole new picture of a country I'd known very little about. She is a woman who clearly loves Pakistan. She makes a point to describe everything from the mountains, the cultural traditions, the people, and even the little details of everyday life. It is as wonderful as it is heartbreaking, as this was a place she eventually had to leave.

And we also have Yousafzai herself. Her story, and the story of Pakistan's struggles with the Taliban are not just well explained, but well told. This book is a compelling read. She clearly has a knack for speaking and storytelling. Through her words we get to see exactly how and why a country gets taken over by religious extremists. It is a topic that remains chillingly relevant and important even to this day.

I highly recommend this book. While I do have a love for fiction, it's very important to read true stories. Read this book. Malala is teaching.

A driving force for change, she co-founded the esteemed non-profit organization, Malala Fund, alongside Shiza Shahid. Through the fund, she has supported initiatives in Pakistan, Nigeria, Jordan, and other countries, ensuring that girls have access to quality education.
