poems in episode one of the story of kunning palace

in episode 1 of kunning palace, xuening grabs a book of poems in order to trick her maids into thinking she keeps a ledger. my knowledge of classical chinese isn't particularly high level, but it's good enough to at least identify which poems are on the page that she opens to, and i'm certain they were deliberately chosen because of their relevance to the characters and themes of the show 👀 so i thought i'd do a post about them :)

this page contains three poems by the tang dynasty poet wang changling (698–756): 芙蓉樓送辛漸 (farewell to xin jian at lotus tower); 閨怨 (boudoir lament); and 春宮曲 (spring palace song). detailed analyses under the cut:

1 - 芙蓉樓送辛漸 (farewell to xin jian at lotus tower):

my translation

poem summary: the poet's friend came to wu on a night when cold rain was pouring into the river, and departs again at dawn. the poet accompanies him on his journey as far as the chu mountains [but cannot carry on journeying with him because he must stay at his official post in wu]. as he bids goodbye, he asks his friend to tell his family back in luoyang that his heart is still pure and resolute.

key themes: loneliness and solitude; duty; having a pure heart and noble character

analysis: this one is a fairly famous poem about parting before setting off on a long journey. it's particularly notable for its final line, 一片冰心在玉壺, which roughly translates to "my heart is as pure as a piece of ice within a vessel of jade"... which could easily have been written as a summary of zhang zhe's character.

however! while there's a definite emphasis on having a pure and guiltless heart, when you combine with the previous line, the couplet as a whole also gives a sense that the speaker wishes to be remembered by those they love as someone pure and righteous ("tell my family back in luoyang that my heart is still pure etc"). this seems to be a theme of xuening's second life: wanting to correct her past wrongs and treat the people she cares for better, and to prove to zhang zhe that she can be a good person in future

in particular, this poem makes me think of xuening's last moments in her first life. the poet's final request before he bids farewell to his friend? for his companion to tell his family that he is still noble at heart. xuening's final request before she dies? for xie wei to take her life in exchange for that of zhang zhe, as her way of repenting for being dishonourable and ruining his life... 🤔🤔🤔

2 - 閨怨 (boudoir lament):

poem summary: the young wife in her boudoir knows nothing of sorrow, but as she completes her toilette and ascends the emerald tower, she suddenly sees the hue of poplars and willows on the roadside and regrets letting her husband leave home to pursue official position and power.

key themes: love and marriage; abandonment; ambition (and the effect that ambition has on love)

analysis: it's essentially about how the husband's ambition causes him to abandon his wife to grief and loneliness, which seems like a clear parallel with xuening's willingness to abandon her faithful lovers for the sake of her ambition; there's also the implication that political status is ultimately less meaningful than a loving marriage.

i think it's worth noting that the character 怨 (yuan) in the title is fairly hard to translate, as it implies a mixture of grief and anger/resentment, or even hatred. it's fairly common in boudoir poems about women left behind by their husbands, and in that context it's often translated as 'lament' or 'grief', but i think the ambivalence of the term is fairly important, particularly if you apply it to kunning palace and the mix of grief and anger that xuening inspires in her old lovers in her first life.

3 - 春宮曲 (spring palace song):

poem summary: the wind is mild, the flowers are in full bloom, the moon is full and bright. the emperor has fallen in love with one of his sister's singing serving women, and is showering her with imperial favour and bestowing brocade robes upon her to keep out the spring chill.

key themes: happiness, success, security. (however, with contextual knowledge, there's also the implication of future doom, and that nobody can stay on top of the world forever)

analysis: i didn't quite catch the full significance of this one until i googled it and realised it's a poem about a real historical figure: wei zifu, a song-and-dance girl serving the princess pingyang, who wins the favour of pingyang’s brother, emperor wu of the han dynasty, eventually becoming his second empress (the second-longest serving empress in chinese history!).

wei zifu's story is essentially about a young woman of humble origins who survives numerous palace intrigues and eventually manages to ascend to the position of empress, trusted by the emperor to the extent that she was allowed to rule in his absence. however, after maintaining her position for over three decades, she eventually fell afoul of a conspiracy against her and her son, and committed suicide rather than allowing herself to be deposed.

i mean… the way this links to jiang xuening's first life is so obvious i don't even feel the need to explain it.

Jie jie, what is The Double about?

hahahahahaha i was waiting for someone to ask!! mr r has bailed on me at work again and bossman has the man flu so it's just. me at the office today. working my ass off for partners who are trying to Kill Me™.

what: period cdrama // still airing, we're on ep 13 i believe? // 40 eps, roughly 45 mins each where: youku (standard disclaimer that i don’t watch with subs so i don’t speak to the quality of eng subs) // i think viki is picking this up?

this is xue fangfei. daughter of a small town magistrate. married a poor scholar for love against the wishes of her dad. this turns out to be a bad, bad, bad decision because he ends up burying her alive in the mountains sometime post-marriage. :)

this all happens in like ep 1, we're just getting started.

xff ends up being rescued by jiang li, who is the prime minister's kinda-sorta-exiled daughter. jl has been stuck in a kinda-sorta-nunnery in the mountains for the past 10 years because of her evil stepmother.

i'll skip past all the other bits because there is a bit of a backstory about what happened to jl, but long story short!! jl dies (kinda-sorta-because of xff). xff decides to get justice for both herself and jl. her plan is:

1. become jiang li 2. go back to the capital 3. ?????? 4. profit make everyone pay

this is xiao heng a.k.a. su-guogong (the translation is duke su but it sounds weird to me so i'm going to stick with su-guogong). he chances upon xff while he's trying to catch a criminal.

xff, who is in the process of executing her Escape Plan, decides eh, any way to escape will do and lets s-gg arrest her to take her back to the capital for interrogation.

(yes, this is wang xingyue who played zhang zhe in kunning palace. yes he looks a++++++ in this show. i am obsessed.)

side bar, counsels, for a bit of very important information -

su-guogong recognises xue fangfei!! he knows 100% that she is not jiang li and that she is going to cause some chaos. he is Committed™ to watching this drama play out.

ANYWAY. this is the loose premise of the show. it's been fun to watch, and i'm enjoying this a lot!! why should you watch the show?

wang xingyue looks so good in this!! the fans? the capes?? i am obsessed!! everyone in the costumes department deserves a raise.

the story moves quickly and doesn't really drag on. so far, it's been nothing complicated and interesting to watch - i wouldn't say this is a plot-heavy show, just a v good 宅斗 for now, but i'm only like 10 eps in.

the torture my ex-husband who murdered me by showing up in front of him and saying all the right things to remind him of me and the fact that he killed me is so good - normally when this happens, the person looks nothing like their former self, but!! xff's looks haven't changed!! so she's just out here going - hi i am jiang li now and oh btw do you know how cold it is in the mountains where you killed me :)

look i'm......intrigued by this whole shen yurong (ex-husband) and the zhang-gongzhu storyline. i want to see how this whole thing plays out!!

Colin Bridgerton needs to suffer meta.

Wait...wait...hear me out first!

I am one of those fans that want to see Colin Bridgerton SUFFER for Penelope yes. BUT with good reason I promise.

Because aside from the book material here in the show Colin had a different path in some stories. He believed himself to be in love and got heartbroken because of it.

He actually needs to feel that burn, that suffering to realize what being truly in love actually means. To actually feel there is no comparison to the real thing. To feel that what he believed being in love meant was not actually real or comparable in any form or way with what he is capable of feeling...for Penelope. (Book reference: This was Penelope...and this was love.)

No one can blame him for seeing Penelope as a friend so far. I think that is understandable but he also is a man who has had privilege in all his life, he has traveled the world from his secure place and is oblivious when it comes to certain things. He is a great guy, loving, devoted, honorable, a flirt and whatnot, but in order to mature he needs to go through some serious introspection. He does need to find his purpose and I would like to see that too in this season (himself as -book spoiler- an aspiring writer too).

I also want him to feel the pain and the struggle that comes with the LW reveal for him to realize that when we speak about a love of the magnitude he feels for Penelope not even what he deems as betrayal can make him give her up. It just does not matter. He will defend her no matter what, he will love her no matter what.

Let me quote Doctor Who for you (yes again):

"You betrayed me. You betrayed my trust, you betrayed our friendship, you betrayed everything I ever stood for. You let me down!.... Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?”

THIS is what and who Colin Bridgerton is for Penelope but to get there he first has to realize it and for that he needs a shock. HE NEEDS THE DRAMA. He is a Bridgerton guys if he is not a messy drama queen who suffers then what is the point? lol... Colin needs to have that maelstrom of emotion. The whirlwind. The pain, the jealousy, the YEARNING, the realization. He needs to be brought down on his knees (I do not oppose to the literal thing btw lol) before he rises again. Stronger than ever. And on the ready to protect his WIFE.

There is just no other way. And I will sure enjoy this because this...is what falling in love is and this season is about romance and Mr. Colin Bridgerton is our MALE LEAD HERO and as SUCH I want him to earn his position which means: HE IS OUR BELOVED IDIOT! YES HE IS GONNA SUFFER. YES I WILL CHEER FOR IT. YES I WILL BE HAPPY FOR MY GIRL PENELOPE AS THIS HAPPENS. YES TO ALL!

IT IS TIME!

I waited long enough! Now bring me season 3!

WHAT I’M CURRENTLY WATCHING

ONGOING:

TO BE CONTINUED (Thailand): I’m having the time of my life with this one due to the main characters’ lack of communication, fear of fessing up to their feelings toward each other, the drama of the past, and Poppy (I always love Poppy!).

LOVE IS BETTER THE SECOND TIME AROUND (Japan): I love mature QLs (mature as in adult characters that are complex, flawed, and feel real, and that deal with real-life problems). This is no exception. I also love stories with the possibility of getting a second chance (because everyone makes mistakes).

1000 YEARS OLD (Thailand): This one is way too cute for me (I have a hard time vibing with too much cuteness). You would think this is a series about vampires and aliens, but it’s actually about soup and umbrellas. The only reason I’m still watching this is because of said umbrellas. The umbrellas got me hooked! (Welcome to the real struggles of a visual artist.)

CLOSE FRIEND SEASON 3: SOJU BOMB! (Thailand): There are too few episodes for me to say something substantial about this one. The neon lights in the first episode got me good, though (and I’m a slut for neon lights). Also, I love drunken shenanigans (in fiction, btw) and it’s delivering on that front.

TWO WORLDS (Thailand): This is another series with too few episodes for me to say something substantial. I like the vibe so far, though. Also, I always have a sweet spot for artists so Khram has a special place in my heart.

DEEP NIGHT (Thailand): I love the club setting (again, neon lights are my thing) and the chemistry between the characters (especially between Seiji and Pan). There’s also the possibility of a poly relationship (which I and so many others are hoping for).

(I hope I don’t get as clowned about this poly relationship as I got clowned about Non showing up alive in DFF.) (Either way, I’m staying in this clown car because I need poly! Hope is said to be the last thing leaving a person...)

CITY OF STARS (Thailand): This is really sweet. The characters are sincere and have great communication skills. Fueang and Krom maturely solve every issue that shows up. It’s nice to see a great relationship like this for a change (even though I do love watching miscommunicating characters as well).

ANTI RESET (Taiwan): I’ve recently started watching this and easily got into it since I could binge several episodes. It has an interesting story (falling in love with a robot that seems very real and human). The chemistry between the main characters is great and the visuals are gorgeous (Yi Ping’s house is beautiful, even though the front door never seems to be properly closed, like, ever).

A SECRETLY LOVE (Thailand): Right now, the only reasons I’m watching this is because of Kimmon (the actor who plays Pluem), Kut (who plays Khonprot, since I haven’t moved on from his role as Din in Chains of Heart), the sapphic side-couple (even though it’s a fake relationship right now) with rhyming names (Soi and Froi), and the neon lights. Mostly because of the neon lights! (I’m such a slut for neon lights!)

UNKNOWN (Taiwan): When I say that I’m obsessed with this series, it’s because I am. These characters live in my mind rent-free 24/7. The chemistry, the palpable yearning, the dialogue, the emotions expressed through the acting when there is no dialogue, etc., etc., etc. It’s just soooo great.

(Unknown does cover a topic that’s generally seen as taboo (“adoptive” brothers falling in love), so, be aware of that. I don’t have any issues watching series with taboo topics because there’s very little stuff I get uncomfortable with when it comes to fiction. So, I’m in love with this series with my whole stone-cold heart.)

Hello! I was just wondering which you find easier to write - Boromir or Éomer - and why?

Hope you're having a great week btw!

Ooh what a great question! :) I thought this would be hard one to answer, because often for me, the difficulty level of a fic depends more on the story/plot, rather than the featured character.

But then I realize that generally, Boromir is the easier one for me to write for, because his steady, stern, but also gentle demeanor is one I am very practiced at. I love creating and writing about that kind of character!

Éomer on the other hand, is more fiery in his passion. The tricky part for me is conveying that passion, especially in heated or stressful situations, without going overboard or turning caricature. I never want to make Éomer into some kind of Drama King, because he isn't some irrational brute in my eyes; I also want to show his intelligence. XD So I take care to be more thoughtful about his actions, reactions, and dialogue. So far I've gotten positive feedback about the voice I give him, so that's promising! It just takes some effort. :)

I hope you're doing well too, Ace! <3 I know you've been busy, but I'm so looking forward to your next published fic. (I still owe you a comment on that Boromir fic--I just have too many thoughts about all the goodness you packed into there! XD)

The Ink Demonth 2023 - Day 6. Machine

Day 6. Machine Crossover: Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? (and later series) "Scooby-Dooby-Doo, where are you? We got some work to do now. Scooby-Dooby-Doo, where are you? We need some help from you now." I cannot wait for the scene when they take Sammy's mask off :3 I'd watch an episode like that. Btw. in case anyone is wondering, Shaggy checks whether bacon soups are 20 or 50 years after expired, because it depends on whether he decides to heat them before eating or not :D

Am I a fan of Scooby-Doo? Well... yes and no. As a little kid, I loved the show, I even had VHS tapes of the episodes... But then my lil brother got hooked on it and watched it so obsessively that I hated the whole show (especially since his favourite was that damn Scrapy-Doo, so he was tormenting me episodes with him, and Scooby-Doom, the other son of the b*ch, which I hate). However, I still enjoyed the full-length movies, and to this day I still enjoy watching some of them (for example: "Scooby-Doo! and the Reluctant Werewolf" or "Scooby-Doo! in Where's My Mummy?..." by the way, the former was made in the year of my birth, so he's older than me, yay!) But then came the era of weird Scooby-Doo series that delighted me again and stole my heart, like "Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue!", "Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated" or crazy one "Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!" (I love self-ironical, self-parodying shows). So... yeah, I guess I'm a Scooby Doo fan now. What's more, I will now say something that will probably make some people hate me: I like the "scandalous" show "Velma". Uuuu! Everyone will stop following me now, what a drama.

I have to admit that I had fun - although it was probably one of the most difficult Ink Demonths so far (counting the future ones I've already drawn). Scooby-Doo is damn hard to draw, because he has very caricatured features while having quite a dog's build, and when broken down into simple shapes, he's... just plain ugly to draw. Shaggy was a bit of a challenge, but it was a real pleasure to draw Velma. By the way, these two are my favourite characters - and I ship them in their youth (in their mature life, I prefer Shaggy with that cool alien from one of the movies). I used, of course, the background from BATIM - and choosing the right one and then framing it the best took me a lot of time and frustration too. I originally wanted a setting from the first chapter, but nothing looked right with the characters on it. I finally made it to the second chapter - and I think it turned out really nice. However, I am extremely proud of how cans turned out, the expiration date of which is checked by Shaggy.

If anyone doesn't understand why this entry is for "machine" theme, let me remind you that the Gang drove a cool, colourful van called... that's right! The Mystery Machine! If you didn't know that, you can't consider yourself a Scooby-Doo fan :D

I'm a terrible person with words, but here I go. (using a translator, my English is a little shit when it comes to writing and a little bit when it comes to pronunciation, ha!)

I would like to say with ALL my heart that I love your work and the writing in "Sing to Me", my heartbeat even accelerates when I remember the existence of this work of art and how wonderful the sensation was, the euphoric feeling of read each chapter and see all the care and dedication put into it. I have immense affection for Raiden, Sam (and Monsoon :)). Seeing how complex they are in the story brings me immense satisfaction, and I just wish all the positive recognition for you, it's impeccable.

(There's a lot I'd like to express, like my hyperfocus- but hey, I'm a terrible person at showing appreciation and affection, I hope you got the message anyway :))

Thank you so much!! I am really happy to know that you enjoy my work 💕 Honestly, every time someone tells me that they enjoy Sing to Me so much, I am getting really happy. This fic means a lot to me and gives me lots of strength and stability, although on the outside it might look that I am not doing much for it for the past year (I do, it's just background work that I can't show T_T massive spoilers and so on). But I mean, I kept saying that each time somebody came to my inbox about it for the last months.

And I am so glad to know that you're feeling like this for each chapter you've read so far! This fic in itself is really complex and long, I could give you a rough estimate of around ~100 Chapters for the main story (Those would be just arc 1-3, the series, however, has 6 arcs in total excluding the 2 AUs). Sooo... let me say, you've got a lot to look forward to, I suppose :3

Also I hope that you'll be curious about the revisions too. Chapter 5 and 6 will have a darker tone than their current version that is on AO3 at the moment, but also will be much better in quality. Chapter 6 will have major changes I think, especially the second halve of it. I am all giddy and excited myself whenever I think about all the plans I have for this story. The drama, the comedy, the (bitter-) sweetness, but also the chaos, the pain and the darker parts of this fic. I wish I could go on a ramble but it's so many spoilers lmao And I don't want to take that away from my readers. If anything, I might drop a few essays about Raiden and Sam that I've got on my to-do list at some point, that in some cases will directly tie to Sing to Me as well.

The series also goes in great detail about Sam's past and who he is as a person because I was a bit dissatisfied with how most fics for this pairing at least that I've read didn't come up with much for his past (but I still liked all of them regardless), hence I went a little bit insane about him. To the point that Sam is technically my OC now (according to my beta reader) lmao

Jsyk, this is my current graph view of my Obsidian vault for Sing to Me and all the dots that connect to him:

My vault is an absolute mess still tbh because the program is a bit overwhelming when you don't know where to start, so this is far from how complex this fic actually even is.

What I can tell you pretty much spoiler free is that the series is complex because timeline wise, it starts in the year of 2001 and ends (technically) in the year of 2026. I say technically because ARC3.5: The War in Heaven goes a bit crazy with science fiction elements and time is... let's say, "relative". The main fic spans from 2019 until 2023 btw.

The prequel (ARC0: I Come with Knives) is entirely about Sam's past, from his POV entirely, and a collaboration with @thatthereneverwas since he originally requested me to write it. Basically adding more Sam lore that we definitely need :3

Please don't hesitate to come to my inbox or DMs if you want to chat about Sing to Me, samuraiden or just Sam or Raiden with me! I don't bite :] Monsoon is also my favourite from the Winds of Destruction aside from Sam, so I get you! Hey I got an idea maybe you could try to write if you want. I know it’s looks EXTREMELY long. Sorry im just really detailed and awful at using words to describe it shortly. Javi Gutierrez and fem reader (or whatever you prefer) are already in a relationship. Reader knows how big of a fan Javi is about Nicolas Cage so she’s used to it. But this time Nicolas has some new film and Javi is so hyper focused about it. Like he’s watching all the interviews, rewatching the film, and looking at all the pictures. Like every fan girl would do with their beloved actor ( literally me). The reader eventually gets sad cuz he hasn’t been as affectionate as he usually would and is basically ignoring her since he’s been glued to the tv. He’s not trying to do it on purpose in a mean way btw. So as a distraction reader goes to binge watch a show (on a different tv) she hasn’t watched yet. That show being Narcos 👀. As she’s watching it she becomes obsessed with a character named Javier Pena the more she watches. Now she’s a little fan girl of her own and the Javi G situation isn’t as big of a deal as of right now. Some time has past as in however long it took reader to get to the middle of season 3 of Narcos. Javi’s infatuation has finally died down (as if it was like a sugar high) and now he’s yearning for reader. Looking for her and finds her giggling at the screen. Asking her what the cute giggles were about. She now spews her new infatuation. About Javier Peña’s personality, looks, storyline, and his mannerisms. Maybe she even starts calling Javier, Javi for short since she’s repeating his name constantly. As Javi G now watches with her (but not really paying attention). He tries to give affection and talks to her but just gives quick responses, absently ignoring him (what he was doing to her before but not realizing it). Now Javi gets jealous (the cute kind cuz that Javier Pena based on the show is obviously not real). He doesn’t understand why she likes Javier more than her own boyfriend/husband (ofc she actually loves Javi G way more but that’s what he thinks as of right now). I mean they basically got the same name, he almost looks like him, and he speaks Spanish as well. Javi just does not get it. Hours later when reader finishes the show she finds Javi acting odd and dressed…. differently. ( he’s now dressed like Pena and trying to act “cool”. Reader is hysterically laughing after realizing what Javi is trying to do. And he’s just standing like: 🥺. To cut things short cuz i realized this is already really long (sorry). She just light heartedly explained (still laughing and not being serious at all) how she felt when he was ignoring her after he tried to make an argument about her pushing him away. They make up and Javi gives her all the affection she could ever have in a lifetime (maybe manhandling her a bit 👀). But the whole situation was never really that serious like they weren’t gonna break up or anything. It’s just Javi being a drama queen. The whole story is just fluffy and goofy but i think it’s sweet.

I absolutely love this. I will start writing it today and will try to have something posted tomorrow. Thank you for the very cute and fluffy idea.

Here is goes:

Again. It is happening again. Javi is stuck in front of the TV watching every movie with that Nicholas Cage person. His obsession is going a little far.

‘Javi, can you come help me with something?” I asked him. I am dressed in his favorite lingerie set and I am hoping that I can pull his attention back to me.

“I am sorry. I am busy watching this. Come watch this with me.” He said patting the spot on the couch next to him without his eyes leaving the screen in front of him.

“Javi, can you pause it please.” I tried again, now standing a little closer to the TV again attempting to get his attention.

“I will help you later, okay? I promise.” He said now turning the volume on the TV up.

This is ridiculous. If Nicholas Cage appeared in front of him right now in his favorite lingerie set, I am pretty sure that would have him jumping up and down and ready to get after it.

“Whatever Javi.” I said and walked away. Well fine if he wants to focus on this man again then I guess I will have to humor myself with something else. Maybe I can find something to watch too. But first, I need to put some real clothes on. I thought for sure offering him myself would have worked.

I made my way upstairs and into my room. I walked over to my closet and pulled out some shorts and a t-shirt. I took off the lingerie set and threw it into the hamper to be cleaned and put on the outfit I pulled out. Maybe I can find something on Netflix or Hulu to watch.

I jumped onto the bed and pulled myself to the middle and sat up. I reached for the remote control from the end table on my side and turned the TV on. I opened Hulu first and started to go through the movies and TV shows that were on it. Blah I feel like I have already watched everything on this. Maybe Netflix then.

I opened Netflix and started to go through the movies. I have seen most of the romance movies on here. Jeeze Javi has messed up my likes on here. I have all these documentaries and action movies on here. Let’s look at shows. I can’t believe he just flat out refuses to switch to his profile. Come on. More action shows, documentaries and then well, wait, hold on, what is that?

Narcos.

It looks interesting. It says it's about drug cartels. Maybe this won’t be too bad after all. I wonder if he has watched it yet. I selected the show and the annoying ding that happens when the Netflix logo appears came on. Right away it starts with the screen that lets everyone know that this is based on real events but, names have been changed and I felt myself getting a little excited.

Only a few minutes into the show I spotted a character that strangely looked like Javi. They have a lot of similarities. His Spanish is impeccable. The cigarette he is holding looks odd. Almost like he hasn’t smoked before the show. Who knows. Maybe he is a chain smoker behind the scenes, but he is just holding it weird.

I surprisingly made it to the end of the episode without changing it. The white guy seems kind of crazy. Almost like maybe he shouldn’t be allowed to have a weapon. I don’t know. He did call that one guy what’s his name? I think it was Javier Pena, an asshole.

I managed to get into the middle of the second episode where one of the women is getting fucked and I started to hear some shuffling outside of the bedroom.

“Javi?” I called out.

“Yes?” He called back in response.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“I just went and grabbed a blanket from the hall closet. I got a little cold.” Javi called back. I didn’t bother responding. I thought maybe he was going to come in here. I guess I was wrong.

I focused my attention back on the show. Of course, when I looked back over, I saw Javier Pena nailing someone on the couch. Well don’t mind if I do. He is very attractive. She is beautiful. Wow they would make a great couple. That scene did not last long enough in my opinion. Granted if the whole show was just that then I don’t think it would be ono Netflix. It would be on a different website.

I just sat in the bed devouring the show episode after episode. I felt my stomach rumble and realized I have been in this room for six hours. It’s the middle of the night and Javi still has not come up to go to bed. What the hell. Nor did he come and tell me if he was hungry. I paused the show and got off the bed and made my way downstairs into the living room. He was still propped up on the couch now watching interviews of Nicolas Cage.

“Javi.” I said.

“Shh he is talking.” He said. Did he really shush me for this? I walked closer to him and noticed he had a take-out container in front of him and a drink.

“Did you get food delivered?” I asked.

“Yes.” He said quickly and took another bite of his food. Unbelievable.

“I am starving what did you get?” I asked.

“Oh, I am sorry, I thought you went to bed. I just got something for me.” He said keeping his attention on the TV.

“You know what fine. You can sleep out here then until this fixation is done with.” I said rolling my eyes and dismissing myself and walking into the kitchen. I think I still have some leftover meat for some burritos in here. I opened the fridge and grabbed out the leftovers and grabbed some tortillas and cheese. I made myself some food and took it up to the room and sat back down on the bed. Since he wants to suck right now, I am eating on his side of the bed. If anything spills then it’s on him. I grabbed the remote and hit play. I sat in silence watching a couple more episodes and finishing my food. I grabbed my water bottle from the nightstand that I leave there so I can have it if I get thirsty in the middle of the night and take a sip of water. I put it back and started to yawn. I turned the TV off and put the plate beside me on the nightstand and got under the blankets. I looked to the empty side where Javi normally is and went to sleep irritated with him.

I woke up to the sound of laughter coming from the living room. It better be the morning. No, I take that back. It better have only been half an hour and he is on his way into this room. Nope. I opened my eyes and was greeted by the sun. Damn it, Javi.

I got off the bed and grabbed my now empty water bottle and plate. I made my way to the kitchen and set it down on the counter and headed to the bathroom. I peed and washed my hands and made my way out with my freshly cleaned hands that were still wet and walked to the living room.

I reached out and wiped my hands on Javi’s face expecting him to laugh or be playful too, but he shrugged me off and pointed to the TV. “He is just so funny. I love this man.” Javi said.

“Why are you still watching this? Can we go out and do something today? Anything? Did you even sleep?” I asked.

“Of course I slept. I am busy sweetie. If you want to go out, you can go without me. I want to catch up on the stuff I missed.” Javi said.

“Javi, you haven’t even looked at me and this is now day two.” I said. He waved me off and again as I became even more annoyed, I looked at Javi one last time before going back to the kitchen. I grabbed my plate and set it in the sink and filled my water bottle up with water and went back upstairs to the room. This sucks. I just want him to hug me and give me kisses again. This has been going on for too long. I wanted to feel his arms around me last night, but he didn’t come to bed. I miss his affection.

I turned the TV back on and started to watch Narcos again. I was somewhere in season two when Javi came up the stairs and into the room.

“Hey baby.” He said. He sat behind me and moved my hair to one side of my head and planted a small kiss on my shoulder. I shrugged him off as I was watching Javier rough someone up. The muscles on him were amazing.

“Baby, I finished getting caught up. Did you still want to do something?” He said, leaving more kisses on my shoulder.

“Baby shh. I am watching something right now.” I said. I felt him get off the bed and he sighed.

“Okay then. I am going to jump in the shower.” He said looking at me. I waved my hand dismissively and he went to the bathroom and closed the door. A few minutes went by when Javi reappeared, and I was giggling at one of the scenes where Javier was being funny.

“What’s funny?” He asked sitting on the bed in his towel.

“This man Javi is just the best. He cracks me up. He is this bad ass who beats people up and kills them. He is so attractive too. The way he walks. His style. Everything is so cool.” I said.

“Oh really?” He said. I never stopped to look at his face but, had I then I would have noticed he looked a bit mad. He sat there and watched a couple of episodes with me before getting up and getting dressed.

“I am going into town do you want to come?” Javi asked.

“No, I am good.” I said and brushed him off. I heard him sigh a bit too loud but ignored it. He did it to me with Nicolas Cage. I can watch the show if I want.

He was gone for a long time. I managed to get halfway into the third season before I stepped out of the room. I am hungry. I made my way to my phone that I left in the kitchen and called Javi.

“Hey.” He said on the phone.

“Hey Javi, can you bring home some food? I am starving.” I asked

“Oh, the new Javi can’t get some food for you?” he asked and laughed a little.

“You are being silly. Please I am really hungry.” I said again.

“Of course, beautiful. I will grab something and bring it to you. I will be home shortly.” He said. I hung the phone up and ran back up the stairs. I put the show back on and after another episode passed and the finale played. I was officially out of a show to watch again.

“Javi?” I called out from the room. He didn’t answer.

“Javi? Are you here?” He was supposed to bring me food. I heard the door open, and I got off the bed and made my way down the stairs. I bumped into him and the first thing I noticed were the brown leather looking pants that were tight on Javi. Oh my gosh. This is too good.

“Javi, what are you wearing?” I asked and he turned around and that’s when I noticed the fresh haircut and the sunglasses. The pack of cigarettes in his shirt pocket.

“Oh Javi. What are you doing?” I asked with a big smile on my face.

“What? You said you liked Javi’s style. You think he is so cool. I just want to keep up with the look you like.” He said.

“Don’t you like it Princesa?” He asked his eyes were getting soft.

“Oh Javi, I liked how you looked before. You are incredibly handsome on your own. You don’t need to look like Javier Pena.” I said and smiled up at him.

“Are you sure? Because you basically had drool coming out of your mouth.” He said.

“Baby, I am sure. I love you for who you are.” I said.

He smiled at me and set the food on the table. He walked over to me.

“Can I kiss you now Princesa or are you going to brush me away again?” He asked. I smiled at him and before I responded to him, he pushed me against the door and grabbed my throat and kissed me. Oh wow. That is exactly what I have been missing. He pulled away from me and let his hand slowly fall down the front of me.

“Let’s get some food in you Princesa. I know I kept you waiting and for that I am sorry. I am back. I will pay attention to you beautiful. I missed cuddling you last night.” He said planting a kiss on my forehead.

“I can’t stand it when you fixate on him. It takes you away from me Javi. I missed you over the last couple of days. You let it completely take you away from me. I had to go off and find something for me to fixate on just so I didn’t get too mad at you.” I said looking at him.

‘I know I am sorry love. I will try and be better about it next time, okay?” He said and smiled grabbing my hand and helped me into the chair at the table.

“That’s what you said last time Javi.” I smiled at him and giggled. I grabbed the food and drink he got me and started to eat. We both ate in silence and continued to hold hands. I’m glad to have him back.

Friends, family! Some updates and questions on the Old GMMTV Challenge -- if anyone catches this post, I would love your input! (AND THANK YOU for all the input on this watch journey so far, I LOVE YOU, FAM!)

1) Love Sick. Oh my gosh, I am TOTALLY enjoying this show. Yes, lots of problems, LOTS of issues, and I get to enjoy the BL cuts, so I’m missing all the messy het context (thank GAWD).

But seriously -- oh my god, oh my god. Noh and Phun are like, a canon Thai BL couple? They’re SO PERFECT FOR THE JOB. It’s so amazing, they’re so amazing. Noh is so insane and WISE. Phun is SO CRAZY IN LUV. I love that Phun just CANNOT HOLD BACK! THOSE EYES! (This guy is my TUL?! TUL?!)

So watching Love Sick now makes me regret, by quite a lot, not watching these shows chronologically. I think it would have helped me a lot to watch Love Sick before SOTUS, but alas, I let my curiosity about Singto get the best of me. More on this in a second.

2) @absolutebl, @clairificusrex, @nieves-de-sugui, and anyone else who wants to chime in! Question for y’all: I found this playlist on YouTube for BL cuts of Love Sick season 2. Do these edits look reliable to you? I unfortunately have to multitask at all times when I’m watching dramas, so I can’t fast-forward -- I think I might need to rely on this playlist to finish out LS2. Gah. I hope these work for the task at hand!

3) Okay, chronology. I would love advice, thoughts, feedback on the following questions! (I’m sorry I’m asking all these questions, btw: I have a huge trip coming up, and may run into rights issues where I’m going, so I want to get a good watch plan solidified before I leave. Because... I’m a list person, oh god.)

Like I said, I think I messed myself up by watching SOTUS before Love Sick. I think it would have really helped me to understand SOTUS even more if I had watching LS first, to catch on some tropes that were clearly borne out of LS.

@absolutebl recommended, as the third drama of the OGMMTVC, 2gether. But, in a separate comment thread, @shortpplfedup also mentioned that Love Sick and Make It Right kind go together (@shortpplfedup, let me know if I’m stating this reliably) as two of the early high school pulp BLs.

I don’t know if Make It Right is as referenced, trope- or script-wise, as an early BL as Love Sick or SOTUS. But it does have Ohm Pawat, who is one of the actors I permanently rabbithole, and I do really appreciate watching Love Sick now to see all the high school tropes being built.

So I’m wondering: for chronology’s sake, would it make sense to watch Make It Right/MIR2 next, after Love Sick, if this is a side-path I want to take to learn about canon regarding high school settings?

Or... is Make It Right not worth it? I know @absolutebl has said before that the heat of MIR may be wiggly for the youth of the actors. I’d love input! If MIR gives by way of education, I may want to dig into it while I’m on the road.

4) And then after that, closing out the OGMMTVC would be 2gether. However!

a) My other side commitment is to understand Aof’s oeuvre. And He’s Coming to Me and Dark Blue Kiss both aired BEFORE 2gether. So I’m kinda wondering if I should watch those first, before 2gether.

b) And then there’s his involvement with the 2gether franchise, which -- I had no idea about until I perused MDL. And I’m totally not quite following what all the sequels mean and maybe, why he got involved in the franchise?

Was 2gether so bad, in a way, that Aof and Fon Kannitha had to come in and, like, rescue the franchise for Still 2gether and 2gether: The Movie?

And, what the heck is this MDL description of the movie? Is it, like... a summary of the two previous series?

(Is all of this messy-mess indicative of why 2gether landed on the OGMMTVC list? Ha.)

I’m a little confused by what the whole deal is with 2gether, and if the sequels are worth watching. For me, the priority would be to watch Aof’s work as it progresses over time, which makes me think I should interrupt the OGMMTVC to watch He’s Coming To Me and Dark Blue Kiss first. Because, again, I’m wondering if he or GMMTV felt that he needed to come in and, like, save the 2gether franchise. When I was digging into all of this in MDL, I was totally surprised to see his name there.

Whew. I know this was a lot, but I appreciate ANY crumbs from the experts. (2gether, on paper, looks like a hot mess, but I know BrightWin are beloved, so...what’s up with that, ha.) If anyone’s reading and commenting this -- thanks, y’all, in advance, for your input!

More golden wind band au things. Btw I am incredibly high, so please excuse any spelling or pacing mistakes.

I wanted to clarify, I think I did in a prev post, but this band au is more of a subgenre??? I think??? And is actually a Guitar Hero 3 au >:) Kinda... It has it's own spin on it for sure, like I'm not trying to completely rip GH3... just take lil ideas from it. BUT i think what sets it apart is that I would like this to be more of a "Battle of the Bands" situation. This will also include the other groups on stage going against each other in awesome music battles. I'm still trying to think some parts out, especially with Doppio and Diavolo, because I kind of want to make it where Team Bucci has to go into a rock battle with Diavolo in order to save their souls or whatever... But idk how to actually Get There?

ANYWAYS!!! There's ofc lil super cute moments between the bandmates ofc. Gotta have that. Also band drama. You cannot have a band without a little (a lot) of drama. Like tf. I'll get more into their personal interactions in a different post.

UHM BUT YEAH this is something I want to talk about with other people and maybe even like roleplay out because how cuteness would that be??? Anyways. Peace and love on planet earth and 100000 kisses for people who read this far

Once again I participate in the "get to know your mutuals" chain mail meme (I'm 100% this is not the correct term but my brain is really fried atm), this time I was tagged by @stripedroseandsketchpads :D I feel like I do this every two months at least so I'm kind of out of people to tag who haven't done it recently, and I've also been kind of dissociated from Tumblr due to work stress so I don't remember if I added anyone new recently :/ So whoever wants to do it, let's pretend I tagged you :D

Last song I listened to: Them Crooked Vultures - No One Loves Me & Neither Do I - I just discovered this band! Even though it's made up of really famous people from other more famous bands! And I really like it!

Currently watching: The Borgias. So far it's... okay? I'm enjoying the character beats but the actual plotty plot (i.e. the politics and wars) is so slowly paced and overly linear. They seem really scared of the audience not getting it so they only allow one plotty thing to be happening at any given time, and they make sure to spell everything out at least once per episode. Which is... not what I'm used to in my historical political drama (quite the opposite in fact!). Perhaps I could have benefited from this approach if it were a fantasy world or a country I don't have much to do with (I remember having to open up a map of Scotland so many times while reading the first Lymond because they kept going from one city to the other and I didn't know where they were in relation to each other), but it's set in my own country and half of the "as you know" recaps are just basic Italian geography for the anglophone audiences lol. After the fifth time one well-educated character explains to another well-educated character that Florence is in the north-west and Naples is south of Rome, I kind of want to scream. The pronounciations are also all over the place - three guys are sitting at a table looking each other in the eyes and pronouncing "Medici" 3 incorrect ways, at least they could have streamlined it between the actors. Like far be it from me to demand proper pronounciation with the way Italians butcher English words constantly, but at least make it consistent! Luke Pasqualino is the only one pronouncing anything as it should be pronounced, and I really felt bad for him in that scene where Lucrezia keeps asking him to say her name and they're both repeating it over and over, because he's the only one pronouncing it correctly while she's saying it as if she had a mouth full of rocks. Btw my favourite Holliday Grainger fucking up the Italian scene so far is when she needs to ride breathlessly up to the French king and say a long line about her brother Juan the Gonfaloniere and basically she's supposed to repeat "Gonfaloniere" several times and you can literally see her going "my brother is the gonfalonsajkdnajsdsbaj" and making a "fuck it, whatever" expression when she gets to the complicated part. Anyway I am enjoying the show, the pronounciations make me laugh they don't make me mad. And the costumes are gorgeous!

Sweet/spicy/savory: Savory or spicy, depending on the mood. I dislike sweet things.

Current Obsession: Nothing really, I've been really tangled up with RL things and am feeling vaguely anhedonic because I keep thinking about work, so it's hard to get into something haha. This is actually why I'm able to focus on the Borgias, because they have quite low bandwidth requirements (i tried to watch it before and found it slow-ish). This too shall pass I suppose :)

The 7th chapter is beyond better than my imagination could come up with, and I have been thinking about this a lot! The tension building is impeccable, I was at the edge of my seat the whole 3 times I reread it))). Btw, what is the best way to comment on the story? I like writing about every single detail I loved in the work/chapter and asks don't provide a lot of space for it. I also see that not a lot of people generally comment on tumblr posts. What is the correct commenting etiquette?)))

hey!! :D so happy to hear that you liked it!! There was sooo much tension building in this chapter which was really fun for me to write but I thought could be very frustrating for readers who just want obi-wan and anakin to kiss and make up (“kit why is there a senate hearing why am I reading about this made up planet” the space opera drama of it all baby!! the tension!! obi-wan being unable to think of anything but anakin even when he has much more important things to think about!!)

so glad to hear the tension paid off….going to begin to work on the next chapter asap (I put all my other wips on hold so I could focus on foolproof foolhardy, I can see myself continuing that until the last chapter is posted) so hopefully it won’t be another month before the last update!!

As far as comments go, I love getting comments via ao3 where people go through and list what they liked most what lines were effective what their reactions were ….. it’s a labor of love I totally understand and I absolutely enjoy them so much if that’s your commenting style!! But I love all comments <3 I think I’m most responsive to tumblr asks over ao3 comments but I read all the ao3 comments (multiple times!! Probably as many times as people reread the fic itself!!) and appreciate any means of commenting you want to leave me!

coming back/moving blogs

hey, been a while, hasn't it? i hope you're all doing well! this is my official coming-back-to-tumblr post, but it's a little different than i had originally planned.

i've decided it would be in my best interests to move blogs after a bit of thinking. i feel like coming back here would just feel too awkward for both me and you guys, especially with my now deleted drama post. i just wanna move on from all this bullshit, especially since i've had do deal with a lot of other shit, including college.

it's still @/evrydaygets-darkr, just moved to a different account. i still like the name, so i'm keeping it for now. this account will still be up for archival purposes, but it will never be active again. i hope you understand. (EDIT: changed to @henriiiii-1001 bc of shit that happened w ak recently. see this for more info and this for my official statement on it)

as a general life update, i'm done with my first semester of college!! it's been kinda fun so far! i've made a couple friends here and there, and classes (except for math) were super cool!!! i loved most of my professors, and i am honestly excited for the upcoming semester! ive been artblocked to hell and back though, so i don't have much in terms of new art or writing, but i've been trying my best to get out of it. i also gained a new hyperfixation, which is project sekai: colorful stage (abbreviated as pjsk), so i'll probably be posting abt that quite a bit (btw my fav group is wxs and my fav character is tsukasa :3 ), specifically abt stats and achievements w like song completions, maybe some pulls too!

im also gonna put a few updates on aus and oc stories rq:

for my tmc aus: the big ones i'm working on are getting new masterposts and infodumps for the new blog. i would rb posts from this blog to the new one, but due to some personal stuff i don't feel very comfortable doing that. i havent been able to cook much lore-wise for any of them, but i'll probably get back into the swing of things once i start interacting w you guys again. - for specifically father's duty: i'll hopefully have chapter 3 done soon. it's actually been almost done for a while now, i just need to think of the ending. thank you to those who've stuck with me this far <3 (EDIT: all my tmc aus are discontinued. read above for more info)

for murder files: i'm gonna change up the pacing a bit because i feel like i was going a bit too fast with it. i wanna take my time with it and make it feel as real as possible. it might take me a bit to get fully set up bc im probably gonna have to plan a few steps ahead, which i've barely done. i just need time to plan everything out and draw some shit

i will try to post as often as i can to get back into using tumblr like a true tumblrina (even though i see theyve made some more disgusting changes so yay </3 ), though it'll probably take some getting used to.

i really missed you guys. i'll see you on the flipside.

I am glad your like my commentaries on Souji's route. I like making them too so at least two of us are having a nice time with them.

It is true that I must have said 3 or 4 times now that for me Kodo emotionally isolated Chizuru while raising her, without ever explaining what exactly I was referring to. So thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about this.

(However, please be aware that I haven't play the game in its entirety yet and I am playing Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi which is a ten-years-old game and far from the newest iteration that might explore the subject a bit more. So this is informed by the anime, the movies and the part of the game I have played as of today. Plus by some of the discussions I have seen in the fandom.)

Also, I am so very sorry for the long post.

When I say Kodo emotionally isolated Chizuru am I referring to him lying to her about who she is or to something else? The answer is both, or rather I think the lying and other things were tools he used to isolate her (emotionally and also physically to an extent) in order to control her easily.

First the lying. Kodo lied to Chizuru, and he lied to her constantly including on things that cannot be reframed as a safety issue for her. Let's list the extent of his lies:

Not telling Chizuru she is an oni: This could potentially be reframed as a way to protect her from a world that would hunt her down. However, Chizuru still knows she is not like other people because of her healing. She has to hide it from ´outside’ people. This means Kodo only gave her half of the truth so she can't have a full picture of herself while also being convinced the only person she can trust entirely is him.

Not telling Chizuru she is not his biological daughter: Kodo is not Chizuru's biological dad. Biologically I am not even sure who Kodo is supposed to be for her. He is part of the Yukimura clan but he is not a pure blood oni. This means that the closest he could be to her is her uncle as the half-brother of one her parents. In the movies Kaoru calls him "Kodo-ojisan" (meaning uncle Kodo) but in Japanese as a younger person you can call middle-aged man ojisan as a mark of respect that is less formal than san (Mister/Sir). The official French subtitles translate this as "M'sieur Kodo", an informal version of Mister Kodo. In the game I am pretty sure Kaoru only calls him "Kodo-san". Which would mean that Kodo is not extremely closely related to the Yukimura twins (personally in my fic I made him the (half-)uncle of their mother who was born only a few years before her so they were raised as siblings more than uncle-niece, which meant that while Kodo is Chizuru's great-uncle he actually served as an uncle figure, I love family drama and complicated family tree). What does any of this matter? Well this lie does not serve any safety or cultural properness purpose. Adoption was extremely common in Japan at the time. Kondo Isami was adopted, Inoue (Okita) Rintaro (Okita Souji's brother-in-law) was adopted by the Okita family, Ito Kashitaro was adopted, Iemochi the Shogun at the beginning of the Hakuouki game was adopted, twice!, apparently Okita Mitsu was adopted by the Kondo family too so she could marry Inoue (now Okita) Rintaro... It would not have been shocking for Kodo to present himself as Chizuru adoptive father. What he actually is, btw. Yet he preferred to lie to her and say that he is her father, period.

Not telling her she ever had a sibling: as a follow-up to lying to her about being her bio dad, Kodo never mentioned to Chizuru that she had a brother. Reminder that Chizuru was 7 when her village was destroyed which meant she could have memories of her previous life (I can't remember if this is a popular headcanon or something backed by canon but it was Kodo who altered her memory right?). Hypothetically Kodo could have told her she had a brother (without mentioning the twin thing considering the negative superstitions surrounding them) adding that he died/disappeared. This could have match with snippets of memory she might have. It might also have salvaged Kaoru and Chizuru's relationship if they ever met again (something I believe Kodo was planning) because I personally thing that what definitely broke Kaoru was his sister not recognizing nor remembering him at all.

All of this accumulate to create a picture of "it was always just me and my dad and no one else" (why would she ever think she might need anyone else?) and "my father is the only person I can really trust". This is plain bad for Chizuru's development as a person and an absolute lie.

To this, one must add other ways Kodo used to make Chizuru dependent on him alone:

While Chizuru is well-educated and has attended a dojo for a short while, she has no (let alone close) friend. She never mentioned anyone back in Edo. I know some of this come from otome protagonists being some sort of a blank page so you can project on them but if we compare her to Hoshino Ichika for exemple (from Collar x Malice), Ichika does have friends and relations outside of the main cast that date back before the plot kicks in. Chizuru does not, besides Kodo.

The inclusion of Iba Hachiro in the new games might mitigate that but from my understanding Kodo did put some distance between the two at some point.

Chizuru had no prospect of her own, no goal with her future life despite being on the brink of adult life. Was the plan for her to live with her father forever?

While Kodo seems to be well-integrated in the medical/scientific community, no one seems to really care about Chizuru. No one seemed to have actually looked for her after she disappeared from the family home and went missing. Chizuru was 16 when she left Edo! She must have more or less run her father's household (which must have make her interact with people), maybe she helped him in the clinic and her father must have been a known figure in the neighborhood at least (as a doctor)... I understand that were more than troubled times but no one cared about the missing 16 years old girl they must have interacted with regularly? Really?

As a result we see a Chizuru that is an extremely strong-willed (she travelled alone from Edo to Kyoto by foot at sixteen years old disguising her gender in the middle of a deeply trouble political time! That takes guts!) and rather intelligent girl, yet she is also quite timid and does not seem to have a point of reference on how people should treat her.

The Shinsengumi kidnaps her and holds her captive for months for being at the wrong place at the wrong time and she is not deeply resentful to them? She thinks they are "nice men" deep down?

It takes her being physically put in danger in the place she is forced to live in to go:

She has no basis for what a sane relationship with someone should look like. She take being controlled as normal. Ironically, it is with the political militia who kidnapped her that she starts learning how to interact relatively normally with people. Because for what I think is the first time in her life since Kodo adopted her, she is allowed to interact with a multitude of people who have different opinion and act as if disagreeing with each other from time to time is normal (which it is). Hijikata gave the order for her to stay in her room? Well it is stupid order and we are not following it. Etc etc.

My thoughts about Kodo's behavior is that he raised Chizuru so she would be able to nominally be the head of Yukimura clan and his future oni/rasetsu kingdom (giving her Shotsuren, making sure she is passable with it, making sure she is educated, etc.) while making sure she could never really escape his clutches and would never even think about trying to do so.
