what: period cdrama // 40 eps, roughly 45 mins each (we’re on ep 29 atm, paid subscription required for vip eps) where: iqiyi (you can also dl the app) // youtube // (ps - usual disclaimer that i do not use eng subs so i don’t speak to the quality of subs) why: do you enjoy jianghu mysteries?? double/hidden-identities??? the shifu-complex trope??? enemies to friends (with a v Divorced-Exes vibe)?? this is the show for you. would enjoy if you enjoyed the blood of youth.
Tumblr media
meet Li Lianhua, a somewhat famous jianghu doctor who is rumoured to be able to bring back the dead. this chill but odd man lives in a super cool caravan he built himself! spends his free time gardening and learning how to cook! he's got a cute pet dog as a companion! he is in his Zen Era, everything is going great for him*.
but i promised y'all hidden identities so, surprise surprise!! Li Lianhua is also known as Li Xiangyi, presumed dead master of the Top Jianghu Sect who has been MIA for the past decade
Tumblr media
Li Xiangyi was poisoned + seriously injured in battle ten years ago, and for a variety of reasons, decided to retreat from jianghu to live his life in relative peace (while also searching for the remains of his shixiong). the poison he suffers from is fatal, it is emphasised he doesn't have long to live. (*except for the dying bit)
ANYWAY. while going about his day to day, Li Lianhua meets:
Tumblr media
Fang Duobing, wannabe jianghu detective. this boy has a++ martial arts skills!! he's (relatively) smart!! he would make a good detective!! but his attempts to do so have been foiled by his Super Influential™ parents who do not want him in harm's way. all my boy wants to do is to successfully enrol in jianghu detective academy and travel the lands!! solve crimes!! he eventually weasels his way into a probationary position by telling the masters of the academy that his shifu is Li Xiangyi
cue extremely fun exchanges like:
FBD: if my shifu li xiangyi could see me now- LLH: your who???????????
Tumblr media
these two have a funny strangers to jokingly enemies (LLH made a fool out of FBD and like drugged him the first time they met) to begrudging partners solving crimes to friends dynamic going on, absolutely a+++. FBD goes from 😤 at LLH to must protect this weak man i have decided is my best friend really quickly. i love one (1) boy.
there is also another key character in this, which really just. is the cherry on top of everything that the show has given us so far.
Tumblr media
meet Di Feisheng. "villain" extraordinaire. has one (1) goal in life - beat LXY. "killed" LXY in battle ten years ago, but suffered severe injuries himself, so he's been recuperating for the past ten years.
imagine his goddamn surprise when he fucking meets LLH who he thought he defeated ten years ago. (side note: LLH is supposed to look nothing like LXY, but DFS recognised him p much instantly!!) he also learns that LXY was poisoned all those years ago, and was not in his best condition during their battle.
cue DFS going absolutely obsessed with curing LLH of his fatal poisoning so that they can go at it again, this time without any handicaps :)
SO ANYWAY these three go around solving cases together, while LLH/DFS also look into the inconsistencies of certain things that happened ten years ago. all the while the three of them are bickering the entire time.
tl;dr - this is the dynamic we've got going on:
FDB: this is LLH my boyfriend (but he doesn't know it yet) who is also my shifu (but i don't know it yet), and this is his extremely annoying ex-husband DFS who hangs around us and i absolutely HATE (and low-key want to throw in jianghu prison) because they are obviously hiding something from me, but also i would probably die for these two
if you need more convincing:
the cases have all been fun so far - the pacing of the show is quite good, and the cases don't really tend to drag on
the fight scenes are really cool - again, if you liked what they did in the blood of youth, you'll probably like this as well
frail and sickly Cheng Yi, always a bonus
i am going to, at some point, write fic about dfs railing fbd quiet while llh watches, someone hold me to this

Pretty please can you recommend some Spanish-language shows that are actually good? Everything I find on Netflix is meh
youtube
Por Ahora it's web series about a couple of 30 something years old argentinian bastards that are navigating adult life and kinda suck at it. Very funny. It's a dark comedy, kinda bizarre at times.
División Palermo
Another comedy bc i am in that mood!! "The plot follows a group of people who represent a social minority and together they form a neighborhood protection guard."
Tumblr media
Los Simuladores
A group of people that dedicate themselves to solve people's problems thats it. thats the plot amazing showstopping 10/10 you HAVE to watch it. There are several versions of it but as an argie myself no one else could have done it like THEM the og's
Tumblr media
La casa de las flores
Loved this showwwww it's funny, it's messy, it has great musical moments. Paulina best character.
Forgot to add abt the plot aaaa; but basically a rich family has SECRETS deep secrets they hide from each other, and someone is ready to reveal them all 😈
Tumblr media
If anyone wants to add more please feel free to do so!!

Now that the writers and actors strike is about to begin being felt (and as we wait for those greedy billion dollar companies who are refusing to negotiate fair pay and conditions to give up) here's 10 of my favorite (all around best) fully finished older series you should definitely check out if you haven't watched.
I mean it, these are the shows with continuously great writing and a satisfying endings that manage to actually deliver on their promises.
-----
1. Leverage - (containing 5 seasons, or 77 episodes) - trailer here.
Tumblr media
Hitter, Hacker, Grifter, Thief and Mastermind. Heists and cons. Stealing from the rich and giving to their victims. They provide... leverage.
Meant for anyone who enjoys bad guys being the best good guys, who will burn down the lives of evil CEOs and then gloat in the background. Very satisfying.
Hands down the best example of a found family trope I've ever seen on screen. Barring none.
2. Killjoys - (containing 5 seasons, or 50 episodes) - trailer here.
Tumblr media
Space Bounty Hunters. Another case of found family trope. Bisexual space princess assassin. Quippy sentient ship. Green alien goo. Evil lesbians (but like... in a good way). The warrant is all.
More seriously though, it's a story about three killjoys and the bounties they go after. Initially. And then they have to save the entire Quad from some very terrifying... stuff.
Contains one of the best friendships I've ever seen on television.
3. Orphan Black - (containing 5 seasons, or 50 episodes) - trailer here.
Tumblr media
Found family trope but with clones.
Low level grifter sees a woman who looks exactly like her kill herself and plans to take over her identity long enough to cash out. Except then there's two other women who also look exactly like her. And apparently they're all clones and someone's killing them.
Enter a global conspiracy. Human experimentation. Lots of clone shenanigans. Some serial killings. And a few murders 💖.
4. Person of Interest - (containing 5 seasons, or 103 episodes) - trailer here.
Tumblr media
Okay I'm beginning to see how I might have a found family trope issue.
Former CIA agent gets recruited by a reclusive billionaire computer programmer who developed a... machine that can predict acts of terror before they happen. But it also predicts 'irrelevant' acts of violence that will result in someone's death.
Unless someone interferes.
I'd really like to spoil some stuff to get you all to watch this one. But I'm going to maintain self control and just mention that early on they get a dog named Bear. Bear is a very good boy. Watch it for Bear.
Also for excellent commentary on rights of privacy, government surveillance and what does 'greater good' even mean? But mostly Bear.
5. 12 Monkeys - (containing 4 seasons, or 47 episodes) - trailer here.
Tumblr media
The very best time travel show out there. What starts out as a confusing mess of causality basically exploding, by the end of the series all makes complete and total sense.
(when that final timey-whimey loop slid into place and revealed the entire pattern it was like a choir of angels started singing in the back of my head. It was freaking glorious).
Anyway, a man from a post apocalyptic future travels into the past to stop a plague from decimating nearly the entire world population.
He has the name of the man who released the virus and it's supposed to be a single trip. One trip. One bullet. Simple. Done.
Except then things keep escalating, and escalating until time begins eating its own tail and it might start looking like the end of the world might be a better ending than erasing all of time and space from reality.
Because when our guys screw it up, they screw it up GOOD.
And oh yeah... found family.
6. The Good Place - (containing 4 seasons, or 53 episodes) - trailer here.
Tumblr media
A self-proclaimed Arizona dirtbag opens her eyes and finds out that she's dead and got accepted in the Good Place. Except that as soon as she arrives the Good Place starts glitching, and she really, REALLY needs to become a better person before she can be found out and kicked out to the Bad Place.
Luckily her assigned soulmate was a professor of ethics and moral philosophy.
One of the funniest, most thoughtful and clever comedies I've ever watched. Ever. The characters are delightful and by the time the final minute rolled around I had sobbed my heart out multiple times (which, as we all know, is a sign of the very best comedies out there).
As for the question of whether or not this too contains Found Fami- Yes! Obviously, yes.
7. Avatar: the Last Airbender - (containing 3 seasons, or 61 episodes) - intro here (couldn't locate the trailer but it's basically the same thing in this case).
Tumblr media
The four nations lived in harmony. Until the Fire Nation attacked.
It's been a hundred years since the beginning of the war when two kids from the Southern Water Tribe find a boy frozen in ice and wake him up. A boy who's able to bend all four elements... though not very well.
Enter multi-nation flying road trip (thank you Appa, we love you most of all) as they try to find teachers for the Avatar and save the world.
Includes found family (shut up), amazing fight scenes, the most heartfelt and vivid characters ever, and the best example of a redemption arc actually done well.
8. Love Between Fairy and Devil - (containing 1 season, or 36 episodes) - trailer here.
Tumblr media
This one gutted me. I'm saying this as a compliment. But it had to be said. Completely destroyed me. I just haven't been the same.
A love story between an Orchid Fairy and the leader of the Moon Tribe that starts out with her accidentally releasing him from millennia long imprisonment and then takes you through the caleidoscope of all possible human emotions (it's a body-swap comedy through the first part, then a romcom, then a dramatic romantic tale, and finally a tragic love story).
But it's such a satisfying slow burn.
And it carries this... humanity through the whole thing that makes it so visceral.
If you're a romantic who's very tired of instalove and characters dropping all their morals because 'ooh, attractive person' then you've got to watch this. Because this story does NOT take the easy road there.
(my more extensive rec for this series can be found here)
9. Star Wars: The Clone Wars - (containing 7 seasons, or 133 episodes) - fanmade trailer here (it was better than any of the official ones).
Tumblr media
This series did so much. Introduced Ahsoka Tano, and made us love her. Gave names and faces and souls to the Clone Troopers (okay, it's the same face but you know what I mean), to a point where their endings during Order 66 destroyed me just as much as the ending of the Jedi Order. And somehow made me both love Anakin AND be a million times more angry with him.
There are some arcs in this series that might be a bit weaker. But there were some... god, there's a reason I love Clone Wars more than any other series or trilogy in this universe. And I'm not even a little ashamed to say it.
Must watch for Disaster Lineage shenanigans; for the vod'e; AND for the Jedi (who did their best okay? They always did their best 😭💔).
(and on the subject of found family... do I even need to comment)
10. Nikita - (containing 4 seasons, or 73 episodes) - trailer here.
Tumblr media
A rogue assassin that escaped Division - covert government agency that takes recruits out of prison, fakes their deaths and then forces them to become spies and assassins - has come back to take it down. Brick by brick if she has to. With guns and explosives too when that works better.
Contains soooo many cool fight scenes. Is full of incredible characters you'll fall in love with (and hate with) very quickly. And most of all has an incredibly complex relationship of mentorship and friendship between two women that holds both great admiration and betrayal, real care and love as well as rage and hatred, forgiveness, mutual respect and an unbreakable kind of bond that so very rarely involves even one female character on TV, let alone two.
(as usual, found family tropes up the wazzoo).
-----
In conclusion. We all know there's going to be a large space between seasons of our favorite shows now (and some shows that aren't going to survive it). Let's fill that space with some excellent TV we haven't had a chance to see yet.
And direct the blame for the wait towards the right place (i.e. the studios).

hi dr fudge! What are some films/books or tvshows that you really really love but don't talk about enough? Also thank you so much for writing so many trashy fics with women of colour leads. There are really so few of them 😢
thank you for appreciating my work! more woc leads in delicious trash! <3
a tv series i don't talk enough about that played such a big part in my youngin days is daria (mtv). fourteen year-old me was living and breathing this show. i desperately wanted to be daria. i used to do rewatches almost every other year (i'm up for a rewatch soon, actually!). it meant the world to me and it still does in many ways. it was definitely ahead of its time, but i can see its flaws when i watch it now. and i no longer want to be daria in that aspirational sense, but i still admire her and think this was such an important show for ppl like me growing up.
a book & movie i should talk about more is i capture the castle. it's just such a lovely comfort read, but it also has this really interesting angle about language, art, and authority (the james-joyce-ian author father, for instance) and also this wonderful, layered sadness about things requited and unrequited. the movie is beautifully made as well. romola garai will always be the perfect cassandra. i need to rewatch it one of these days. also, if you want to break your heart and mend it again, listen to the soundtrack! it's so whimsical, melancholy and haunting <3

bestie, I was actually going to ask what you thought about 'the rise of pink ladies' because I want to watch it after finishing 'ted lasso' (I need to convince myself to watch the latest episode, ugh) as a huge fan of 'grease'.
so, I am glad I got your blessings, because the songs/edits I saw WERE FREAKING COOL!
only the first four episodes are out in the uk unfortunately so i have to wait until tomorrow to get episode five :( i love grease so much from the movie to the sequel to the theatre production (i've been lucky enough to see dirty dancing and hairspray since the pandemic too, i'm still waiting out on six to tour again and i'm getting wicked tickets for my bday because they're touring near my city on my actual bday) so as someone who is a massive musical lover i can say this tv show has my approval (or rather the episodes which have aired so far). i personally love the character nancy. it also has amazing representation along with the storyline consisting of the struggles they go through along with being teenagers. i think? there's a queer storyline between cynthia and another girl from what i've read but i can't be 100% sure. as for the music, it's catchy and the songs stay STUCK in my head for that week. if you like grease 2 you'll love this tv show (i say that because i think you'll know what you're in for because grease 2 wasn't well received but i actually prefer it to the first — is that a hot take?)
i haven't watched ted lasso but i've been told it's super good and it's on my list but right now i don't have apple tv :( *i'm sure i can find totally legal ways to watch this tv show wink wink.

what is war of faith about? is it worth a watch apart from just wang yibo(being gay?)? and where should i watch it?
you were all expecting me to do this so okay let's see how many others i can drag down this shenlai (i think this is the ship name we've settled on?? i have seen many 沈来之笔 tags on ao3 so i'm assuming that's what the chinese fandom has settled on) hole.
what: republican era communist spy drama (finance bros edition) // completed // 38 eps, roughly 40 mins each where: iqiyi (standard disclaimer that i don’t watch with subs so i don’t speak to the quality of eng subs) why: *chanting* yibo yibo yibo yibo yib- wang yang?? xiansheng???? i'll preface by saying i don't watch many republican era shows - it's really just not my thing, like even zhu yilong couldn't make me watch one and that's saying a lot, but i did finish and quite enjoy this one!! extremely strong cast on this show, and the story moved fast enough and had enough action in it that it kept my attention.
meet my boy wei ruolai:
Tumblr media
ruolai is from a v humble family, worked hard to put himself through night school but is having trouble stepping foot into the finance world because he has no money, no connections, no diploma (the school is holding off on issuing him one because he's from a communist-stronghold province 😪). he's working several jobs to make ends meet in shanghai when he decides to interview for a job at the central bank.
he aces his entrance test! ofc he does! ruolai is a bit of a whiz with numbers, and is very very very determined to get the job - the place could be on goddamn fire for all he cares, he'll finish his goddamn test and get this goddamn job even if it kills him.
his performance gains him the attention of shen tunan:
Tumblr media
xiansheng!! 😍💖💕
chief of the central bank, The Guy™ of the finance and banking industry in shanghai. extremely attractive in a suit. 100% dilf certified.
xiansheng takes a shine on ruolai, but ends up not being able to hire ruolai despite his excellence because, again, ruolai is from a communist-stronghold province, and they don't want to take any chances with him possibly having communist ties.
does that set ruolai back?? no. my boy sneaks into a party that shen tunan is holding at his mansion, and convinces shen tunan to hire him by essentially picking apart shen tunan's ~secret strategies~ that he's uncovered just by following the finance news and making smart deductions 🥺💚
shen tunan caves and personally hires ruolai as his PA, and begins mentoring him and teaching him the ways of the banking industry.
Tumblr media
the show is mostly about ruolai's growth in the central bank and the shift of his political beliefs, centred around the kmt and communist party's conflict in that era. the premise of the show is fairly simple - most republican era dramas move in the same direction. this one was well-written, had a solid cast, and beautifully shot.
the development of stn and wrl's relationship in this show was good! it's v shippable, if that's something that is important to you. ngl, i did stay through till the end because these two were so interesting.
we have proud teacher shen tunan who is so so proud of his boy and takes ruolai suit-shopping and tells him how special he is :
Tumblr media
starry-eyed disciple wei ruolai who would literally do anything for shen tunan:
Tumblr media
he really does mean it when he says that. he gets tortured and thrown in goddamn jail for shen tunan, and he just bears it all and doesn't let himself react in any manner that could harm shen tunan.
i started this strictly for yibo, and had no expectations that i would enjoy it, but guys...........wang yang is 🥵🔥 in this as shen tunan, and this ship just.......sails itself. what else was i supposed to do except go three hundred different levels of ahhhhhhhhh over them.
ANYWAY. strong rec. like at least 8.5/10. even if you're just in it for yibo (who is EXCELLENT in this, the whump scenes are incredible), or if you just want to ship shenlai, the payoff is strong in this.

Reasons to watch Love Between Fairy and Devil.
A Chinese fantasy romantic drama with a dash of comedy in the beginning and a huge wallop of angst in the second half.
One, the romance.
Tumblr media
(take careful note of this gesture, please, it will break your hearts in the future)
Okay, so this is honestly one of the best told love stories I've watched in recent memory. And that is honestly very impressive when you consider how very easy it is to mess up this kind of love story.
She's Xiao Lanhua (or 'Little Orchid Fairy'), bright and innocent and kind. And in the beginning more than a bit naive and foolish. A fairy who is looked down on because of her damaged immortal root, who bends under the pressure of the bullying she's always known from the other fairies. Lonely in her home of Arbiter Hall where she looks after the destiny books alone by herself because her shifu left to wander the mortal realms.
He's Dongfang Qingcang. The Moon Supreme, the leader of the Moon Tribe who has been imprisoned following the last war between his people and the Heavenly Realm 30'000 years ago. He's cold and unfeeling and quite literally heartless (this involves fantasy reasons and some pretty horrible childhood trauma that gets slowly unraveled through the story).
And in the beginning the only reason he doesn't kill her as soon as he's free is that there's an accidental curse that ties his life to hers. If she dies so does he. If she's cut, so is he. And whatever emotion she feels, he will feel too. Whatever order she gives, he must follow. And sometimes, under certain conditions, they switch bodies.
Tumblr media
(the actors have great fun with it, warning of huge amounts of second-hand embarrassment in two out of 36 episodes, I nearly died, it was worth it)
He keeps her safe because he has no choice.
And the thing is that he doesn't actually ever try to seduce her. The normal formula of this kind of story is 'he lies, seduces her, then falls in love, but still breaks her heart, she forgives him' right? This show though? It plays with the formula, yeah, but it twists it in a very interesting (in my opinion) way.
There's a misunderstanding between them. And here's some of the comedy of the show. She thinks he's fallen in love with her and she's trying to gently let him down. Meanwhile he's not actually pretending that he's in love with her, he's just not telling her exactly why he can't let her out of his sight.
And the development in both their characters is incredibly detailed and intricate. They both grow immensely through the story. As Dongfang Qingcang first experiences emotions through her and then as his own emotions begin to wake up following that. As Xiao Lanhua starts out wanting to return to her normal life and then falls in love not only with him but also his land and his people.
They're very Hades and Persephone (minor kidnappings including). And very Romeo and Juliet (though more mature about it, she isn't actually willing to compromise her own morality just because she's fallen in love with him).
And their love story isn't at all rushed. It takes nearly three quarters of the story for them both to fall in love, it is gradual and believable and mutual. And then once they have fallen in love despite the fact that there are all kinds of very familiar angsty plots thrown at them, none of them get dragged out to annoying lengths and many of them get resolved in very refreshing ways.
Tumblr media
(angst, there will be such big whallops of angst, my friends)
But the romance is not the ONLY thing this show has going for it. It is what changes the fate of all three realms, yes, but there are other relationships that deserve to be mentioned.
And other characters, because this is actually a pretty beautifully built ensemble show.
One character is Dongfang Qingcang's brother Xun Feng, the character that in a different show would be the malicious underhanded brother who wants to steal his brother's throne and cares only of power.
Here though, after an old secret is revealed and he finds out the truth behind the reason (a good one) he's hated his brother for thousands of years his wish to rebuild his relationship with his brother is genuine. And though there are things he does after that which could have been because of cruelty in a different show, here they are simply misguided.
Tumblr media
(there are lots of awkward Dongfang Qingcang trying to show affection for the first time since childhood scenes, they're adorable, and hilarious)
Then there's the false friendship between Xiao Lanhua and Jie Li which slowly develops into a real one through the power of Xiao Lanhua being simply too stubborn and too good and too genuine for Jie Li to remain stone against.
Tumblr media
(here portrayed scene of Jie Li flinching under horror that is Dongfang Qingcang doing his very best to make Xiao Lanhua as ugly and unattractive as possible)
Jie Li is an orphan of the Moon Tribe from Haishi City who has spent her entire life scrapping for survival by lying and cheating. Including by selling to Xiao Lanhua fake cures for her damaged immortal root.
Again, there are certain ways you'd expect her story to go. You'd be wrong.
And then the relationship between Dongfang Qingcang and his most loyal guard, the Black Dragon Shang Que.
Tumblr media
(here shown the reaction to the miracle of his lord patting his brother on the shoulder).
Poor dragon needs to deal with a lot and deserves a raise. He's also just as dumb as the rest of them. And FYI falls in love with Jie Li.
And then of course is the very healthy way this show portrays unrequited love too.
There are two characters who this is shown through. One is fairy Dan Yin who is in love with the God of War Chang Heng and is introduced as a spoiled bully but very quickly is shown being capable of fairness and ultimately gets developed into a character that you want to see gaining happiness.
The other character is Chang Heng himself who is secretly in love with Xiao Lanhua (who actually does have a crush on him bourne from gratefulness and a little hero-worship at the start of the story), but he ultimately loses his chance through inaction and silence that he abandons too late. But I want to make clear that he is not an unlikable character. In a different show he would have been the other lead. Just... not in this one.
Tumblr media
Anyway, the two characters experience unrequited affection and though both go through stages of denial and unwillingness to abandon hope, neither do either one of them ever turns into something despicable - and when the time where they must choose between selfishness that would hurt the ones they love, and selflessness that would save them comes around both do the right thing.
Which is something I found refreshing and a relief.
And this show has so many relationships that get fully developed and explored. Not simply between the main couple and those around them. But between the secondary characters themselves. Other than the relationships I've already mentioned, other ones that have their chance in the sun are Xiao Lanhua and Dan Yin, Dan Yin and Jie Li, Dongfang Qingcang and Chang Heng, Xun Feng and Xiao Lanhua. And more besides.
And then there's the villain of the story who is both monstrous and utterly unforgivable and yet also has a very sad story and motivations for what they do. I can't really say anything more though.
Basically I just really recommend this show to fans of fantasy and people with a weakness for a very compelling, well developed love story.
For those interested, the first five episodes are available to be watched free on the official streaming site here (at which point you can decide if it's worth subscribing for a single month to finish watching).
I think it's also going to be available on Netflix on September 18, 2022 update: September 9, 2022.
That's of course for the... official sites. There are of course other options available 🏴‍☠️.
P.S. I finished the entire show with all its 36 episodes in three days (despite it being my first time watching a live action Chinese TV series) am now going into withdrawal. Seriously, this show is SO GOOD, I PROMISE.
P.P.S. It's got a happy ending. I will not tell you anything other than that. But yes, it's got a happy ending.

oh sam clafin is so so pretty in djats. tbh i wasn't the biggest fan of the book & the show is a tad too corny/tropey for me so far, but still an entertaining easy watch with pretty people & fun music. it is very funny seeing them try to pass off sam claflin as like a 21 year old though lmao very how do you do fellow kids. i also have so many Thoughts i will keep to myself about him as an actor and about him repeatedly being miscast as a romantic/slutty/funny lead when he should be a dramatic villain evil character actor, which leads to him way overacting in a show like djats, but overall it's still fun to see him on screen if only for my finnick nostalgia. please do share your thoughts if you end up watching!
an entertaining easy watch with pretty people and fun music sounds good to me! right now i'm looking for things to watch that i won't want to write fic about. my "ooh i wanna write this" list is getting unmanageably long. my next major self writing lesson is going to be mastering the <10k story while still hitting all the emotional beats i'm interested in.
hard agree, sam claflin is definitely a character actor who is often miscast, but while i think he does evil villains really well, i think he's best at morally complex characters with a lot of layers. i know thg is probably his most commercial role but his portrayal of finnick is just startlingly good (and also "the hunger games movies are great, actually" is a hill on which i will perish). he was also phenomenal as hawkins in the nightingale where, to your point, he's absolutely the evil villain, but even though he has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, somehow his performance doesn't completely eject the viewer. (well, it definitely ejected some viewers during the awards circuit. the beginning of that film is one of the most brutal first acts of any movie i've ever seen.) my ideal role for him is one where he plays a villain whose character arc is redemption and self-actualization. but unfortunately that character trope is all but dead in american media.
i do feel bad for character actors who are hot. i remember a few years ago when sam rockwell won an award for three billboards outside ebbing missouri, he said something like [sic] "this is the worst thing that can happen to a character actor." so actors like cillian murphy and ben whishaw were serially miscast early in their careers.
(my go to example of the hypocrisy of acting awards is the florida project. willem dafoe got all this acclaim for his performance as a hotel maintenance guy, when the main characters seriously seemed like they were plucked up from a floridian walmart and filmed for a reality show. i mean, those performances were so seamlessly real that nobody even remembers them. fish tank is another example. i've seen that movie half a dozen times, and it's remembered for michael fassbender as the hot fucky step dad character, but katie jarvis as mia is just such an emotionally agonizing and vulnerable performance which deserved far more praise than it got.)
anyway! having watched nearly all of sam claflin's filmography, i do hope he never has to do another me before you or love, rosie again.
looking forward to watching daisy jones and the six once the season is out in full!

8 tv shows to get to know me! Tagged by @gustingirl graciass <3 <3
Derry Girls: forever my favourite series and comfort show to watch
Anne With an E: another comfort show, and it was netflix's biggest betrayal to cancel it, it's visually beautiful, the story is very heartwarming, and the music is the most relaxing thing ever!
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries: fashionable lady detective solves crimes in the 1920s, it’s frankly hilarious and a really good watch 👌🏼👌🏼
Black Sails: my new hyperfixation, it’s got gay pirates and violent deaths, what's not to like?
The Great British Bake Off: yes, I am counting this as a tv show. I may not know how to bake una puta Exquisita, but by the third episode I’m watching, I can judge whether Paul and Prue will accept the contestants’ frosting.. also everybody’s very friendly, not like most cooking/baking shows, so I love it
Agent Carter: Peggy, Jarvis, and occasionally Tony Stark, against the evil forces of random MCU villains in the late 40s? Iconic, what’s not to like? The fact that it got cancelled is to dislike actually but eh
Downton Abbey: the story is very telenovelesca but the setting is done so nicely, and the clothes had a lot of research and they even used actual vintage dresses and accessories!!
La Catedral del Mar: a retelling of the construction of a cathedral in Barcelona.. the actors are very good, and the series is very similar to the book!
(Lo que me costó pensar en 8 series que hubiese visto pahr favaaaaahr)
Tagging, no pressure: @ailec-12, @victas-art, @paddooo, @chaoticconstellation, @faroresson, @hakkiest, @thalias-pine-tree, and anybody who wants to recommend series to me!

Ty so much for yout ALOTO rec. I'm obsessed. Gonna rewatch again. Its really help me to distract myself from my depression. Really need some escapism that I can't get from currently disappointing PP bubble. More shows recs to binge from you would be very much appreciated 😁
OMG! I'm so happy you enjoyed it. Definitely rewatch again and let me know what you think about a Bechloe au because it's all I've been able to think about. I know people have already done ALOTO (1992) x Bechloe but this new series does soooo much more for those headcanons. Like it's real!! it's about queer people!! women!! ahhhhhh!!
i'm definitely going to rewatch again soon, but I'm catching up on my current show rotation, which are:
american horror story/stories (hulu) - american horror stories is particularly good for one-offs because each episode is kind of its own isolated thing if you don't want to do the seasons. if you do want to watch a season of American horror story though, then I recommend Coven (S3), Apocalypse (S8), and 1984 (S9).
paper girls (prime) - sci-fi, exploration of growing up, queerness, drama...this was honestly such a great series. i admit i haven't read the comics this show is based on but i have seen indications that the show is a good adaptation
never have i ever (netflix) - the latest season just came out. i used to watch this with my mom but she doesn't have netflix so it's kind of hard to watch with her now. but we both really enjoy it. this show touches on cultural identities, growing up, teen drama, and is quite witty and funny :)
yellowjackets (showtime) - this might be a bit heavy if you're feeling like you need escapism because there are a lot of heavy topics, but the acting and storytelling are phenomenal.
here are a few other shows which i am awaiting the return of/future seasons:
the boys (prime) - this one is definitely a bit heavy, particularly in the violence/drama side. and the villains are truly horrible so maybe this is not what you're looking for. but i genuinely enjoy this show and find it such an interesting take on superheroes in popular culture. it ties in cultural identities, politics, and social issues all against the backdrop of a humans v superheroes conflict.
arcane (netflix) - this is the animated series based on the lore of league of legends. hailee steinfeld voices one of the main characters. this show is phenomenal - stunning animation, great voice acting!
the sex lives of college girls (hbo max) - another mindy kaling helmed show. i particularly like this series because i feel like it's a great take on the college experience for women. it explores cultural and sexual identities and the friendship between the main 4 is such a great one. good acting and good writing!!
it should be noted that all of these shows feature wlw storylines :3c
