I want the human/cybertronian life difference to be talked about more in canon

Cuz I mean. it’s RIGHT THERE.

Just a smidgen of true acknowledgment I BEG YOU HASBRO‼️

i mean come on all it takes is someone mentioning how long the wars been going for one of the humans to go “4 MILLION YEARS???? WHAT THE FUCK HOW OLD ARE YOU???”

And optimus or ratchet to be like “…5/7 million?” And all of the humans to have a break down CUZ WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOUVE BEEN ALIVE SINCE BEFORE THE HUMAN SPECIES EXISTED??? WE WERE MONKEYS WHEN YOU WERE BORN???

And the (woefully uniformed) cybertronians to be like “??? What do YOU mean your species was still evolving when I onlined, how long do you guys live?? A thousand?? A few hundred??”

And the gobsmacked humans to be like “??? NO WE HARDLY LIVE OVER A HUNDRED ITS CONSIDERED AN ACCOMPLISHMENT?? AVERAGE OLD AGE DEATH IS LIKE MID 80s!! TECHNICALLY THE AVERAGE LIFE SPAN IS 72 OR SOMETHING???”

Cue the autobots being like “😨 72??? THATS A CHILD WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT⁉️”

the more attached/emotional bots looking at their charges and realizing that not only are they sparklings compared to them but they’ll die as sparklings too in just a few decades, causing them to straight up have a mini meltdown.

Yeah they’re in a war and they’ve lost plenty of friends, but never to anything as predictable and inescapable as old age.

It’s the seeing-it-coming part that gets to them, the slow dread of knowing that even if they do everything right and keep them out of danger and they stay healthy there’s nothing they can do to stop them from withering away in a couple of decades.

Most versions of bumblebee looking at their charge/friend and realizing his assumptions about the fact that since they’re both still young that they’ll have plenty of time to just. Live together and have fun- are wrong?? Immediately tears. Even if cybertronians can’t cry tears he’s doing whatever the equivalent is and running away to cry in his room. And then running back to snatch them and take them with him cuz HE CANT WASTE A SECOND IF THEIR LIFESPANS ARE REALLY THAT SHORT HES GONNA JUST HAVE TO SPEND 24/7 WITH THEM

This whole concept ESPECIALLY applies to TFP since all of them got their own little human buddy and there’s only like 5 autobots to begin with (of the main season 1 crew) they’ve lost so many of their own so recently, their numbers are already dwindling down to nothing, they’re losing the war and the kids are what’s given them a major morale boost. To continue fighting they need hope, and the kids have kind of become their hope for the future- to know they’ll die off in under a century despite how young they still are is a shot to the spark.

Look me in the eye and tell me bee wouldnt panic hearing that Raf only has 70-80 years to live. LOOK ME IN THE EYE AND TELL ME HE WOULDNT HAVE SOME KIND OF FIT OVER BEING TOLD THAT HIS LITTLE BUDDY (from a cybertronian perspective) HAS A LIFESPAN EQUIVALENT TO A LATE STAGE TERMINAL ILLNESS DIAGNOSIS. Bee would start treating Raf like a kid with stage 4 cancer 😭

I just KNOW bulkhead would have the worst reaction other than bee, maybe even worse cuz he looks at miko and realizes she’s used up basically a fifth of her entire lifespan already and she’s Still So Little and straight up starts weeping. That’s his DAUGHTER you can’t take her from him so soon it’s not FAIR! He might have to go destroy a canyon wall or something to let some of the anger and grief out

Arcee is Not taking it well either.

She JUST got attached to this one, just got used to a new partner and your telling her that no matter what she does he’s never going to last as long as tailgate of cliff jumper did?? Even if both he and she do everything they’re supposed to do to protect him and extended his life?? Depression time baby

Optimus and ratchet don’t react as much outwardly to the news as the others but inside they’re both 💔💥

These kids have brought optimus a level of contentment he hasn’t felt in vorns, and he sees how bright their spirits shine- Only to now know those precious spirits will burn out in less than a century- it gnaws at him inside, yet another strike from the cruelty of fate

Ratchet is devastated but refuses to acknowledge it, these kids- yes even miko- have become his pseudo grandkids and he’s not ready, nor will he ever be ready, to outlive them. Jacks reminds him too much of a younger optimus, still learning and still hopeful. Miko is… well she has a fire to her that ratchet can appreciate (when she’s not actively annoying him) she’s determined enough to make anything happen which he does begrudgingly respect even if he wishes she wouldn’t just throw herself into any and every situation just for fun.

And Raf…

Raf is his apprentice, the only one of the kids to understand him and listen intently to his stories of cybertron. To show appreciation for his work and his ideas, to Listen and Learn and Improve his inventions. He harbors the most fondness for Raf since he sees so much potential in him, and has taken him under his wing in teaching him cybertronian language and biology.

He feels almost like he’s training a student to take his place- only for the ground to be ripped out from under him to know that Raf will never have the chance to succeed him, will never even outlive him.

A parent should never have to bury their child, and ratchet already feels that he has.

TLDR the autobots find out humans have fruit fly lifespans next to them and become one big soggy mess of tears, optimus and ratchet included although they try to have a stiff upper lip about it (and fail to varying extents)

I swear this was supposed to be about any and all continuities but TFP took over completely😭 idk it just fits the best since they focus so much on how attached the bots get to the kids

Edit: btw this was inspired from the fact I found out that the cybertronian equivalent to a year (yes I know technically they have solar cycles which are roughly a human year but what they consider a year vs their lifespan/time perception is different) is a vorn. A vorn is 80 HUMAN YEARS. I saw that and went “oh wow a vorn is like a whole human lifespan!😃” and then I went “OH A VORN IS A WHOLE HUMAN LIFESPAN 😀“

After being subjected to the canyons utter dismissal of anything Izzy did in s1 I honestly started to feel like I’d been misinterpreting the show. The confrontation between Izzy and Ed in s1ep10 is boiled down to Izzy just “saying some mean things”. Izzy’s controlling and shitty behavior is just him being protective and in love with Ed and it’s actually so tragic that Ed would dismiss Iz like that, guys. Take after take, I began to wonder if maybe I’d blown things out of proportion. Maybe he wasn’t that bad.

But then the gears in the logical part of my brain start turning and I remember why framing Izzy in that light is so frustratingly shitty. Like, okay. We all get that Ed isn’t an evil monster for killing his dad. It was a direct response to feeling threatened after suffering and witnessing his fathers abuse. We can all agree on that. So why is it different when Ed has a similar reaction to Izzy threatening him? Why is it okay for Izzy to berate and mock and tell Ed he was better off dead? Izzy displayed controlling and honestly abusive behavior in season 1. Ed was fighting back against his abuser when he killed Father Teach, and we got that. But suddenly that isn’t the case when he fights back against Izzy? I’m so tired of people acting like mental abuse isn’t as valid as physical. That it was only mean words, and that Izzy did everything out of love.

Homophobic parents can be controlling and abusive “out of love”. They think they’re protecting you. That doesn’t absolve them of their shitty behavior. That doesn’t change the fact that their actions are harmful. The same should be said for Izzy. Ed was mentally tormented by that man‼️ For people to dismiss that and act like abuse can only ever be physical is so disheartening. I’ve suffered both. One is not necessarily worse than the other. It feels so invalidating…I want to engage with fans and talk about this because I feel like it’s important, but if I had anyone argue with me about it I think I’d explode into a pile of silly string. It sucks that this is the state of the fandom 😭

yep people will absolutely bend over backwards to view all of izzy's actions in the best possible light. they give him the benefit of the doubt, they full on make shit up that 'must have' happened offscreen, they rationalise his abuse of ed in a hundred different ways. 'it was for ed's own good' 'he was trying to protect the crew' 'ed was going to get everybody killed' etc

(and often when they post about this it's really telling about their attitudes to stede being femme/gnc - i've seen too many posts along the lines of 'izzy needed to stage an intervention for ed, the talent show was the last in a long line of batshit things he'd been doing because he was obsessed with some ponce')

as many people in this fandom have already pointed out, it's like the canyon thinks that a white guy can say whatever the fuck he wants regardless of how threatening or abusive it is, but the moment the brown guy he's saying it to dares to retaliate to protect himself, he's an abuser and he's completely unjustified and etc etc

i resent being called an abuse apologist by the same people on this website who will unironically post takes like 'izzy wasn't abusive to ed because he wasn't trying to hurt him, he was acting in ed's best interests, ed forced his hand' (sound familiar?) or 'if izzy is so abusive then how come he tried to get ed out before the navy got there' (idk bestie maybe he could've tried not selling the crew out at all? maybe if he really did care about ed he wouldn't try to get his partner killed?)

What made you ship it? Honestly, I think it was the half-a-witch parallels they have, plus the hands in ASIAS! Also I saw Hunter blush at her in LR and immediately got attached, along with how happy Willow was when Hunter helped Gus 😭

What are your favorite things about the ship? A LOT OF THINGS, tbh, but mostly how protective they are of each other and how much they mean to each other (hence the speech in FTF) plus I just REALLY love how they were shown in FTF, like they definitely have crushes on each other and are willing to maybe get into a romantic relationship with each other in the future BUT they can also be friends at the same time and don't pull that "more than friends" BS!

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I am some flavor of aspec (don't know where but probably not allo) but yet I don't consider it "a waste of representation" that they're both into each other, like I saw Willow as demiromantic/sexual but it might not be true yet I'm not getting all pissy about it or bothering the crew to confirm my headcanons like SOME PEOPLE ARE, ugh. ALSO, I personally think they did their relationship justice in season 3, especially FTF! It was a little fast paced, but it didn't come out of nowhere and I don't consider it rushed! Though we could've gotten a lot more if we had gotten a full season 3 :/ What made you ship it? I think it was the picture that Gus has on his bedroom wall and seeing that Matt joined the illusion track because he most likely saw Gus making them, plus these idiots have THE CUTEST FANART

What are your favorite things about the ship? Mostly their dynamic and parallels to Luz and Amity, ESPECIALLY in season 1 and then in TTLGR, it's so cute how many parallels they have to the girlfriends! (intentional or not, we don't know) Plus the way that Matt was basically flirting SUPER CONFIDENT AND SHOWING OFF with Gus in FTF was too funny, plus he mentioned that Gus taught him illusion tricks🥺

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on the ship? I really like them a lot, but because of the shortening of the show and all the stuff they have to resolve in "Watching and Dreaming" I don't think they should be OFFICIALLY canon or dating or anything at the end, but ONLY because we weren't able to see alot of their bond in canon, and I don't want them to be rushed or anything :( BUT that doesn't mean I don't want more crumbs of them, especially in the end. I just have a feeling that had we gotten the full season 3, they could've been EVEN CUTER than they already are, PLUS with the parallels they have to Luz and Amity, we could've gotten other interracial MLM rep besides Gilbert and Harvey (no hate tho, I love them!) to go along with the interracial sapphic rep we have.

SEASON FINALE SPOILERS

we were robbed.

you could tell they had to cram 3 episodes into the season finale. I thought maybe they would throw us a bone and make it at least an hour long but when I saw it was only 30 minutes I knew it was going to be rushed to shit.

they've also written it in a way that if it doesn't get renewed for another season then it still had an ending that made sense.

it hurts my heart that we didnt get three full episodes.

one exploring stede and eds separation.

one where Ed comes back and realizes how in love he is with stede- how much he regrets leaving on a whim. how badly he needs to find and rescue stede. (the look on his face when he sees the Republic on fire and he realizes that he wasn't there to protect stede like he has been doing since the beginning)

finally tying it up with the final episode where they are reunited and have to go through escaping the English, saving their family, losing izzy and finding themselves as a couple again.

it was so rushed when we were told it was supposed to be taken slow. I wanted to watch them fall in love again. Stede still doesn't feel like Stede where as Ed seems to finally have found himself as Edward instead of blackbeard. Stede hasn't hit that part where he realizes he can just be Stede as well. he's still trying too hard to be a pirate instead of his own brand of gentleman pirate as he saw it before. I mean we hear Ed say he loves him (for the first time out loud unless I'm forgetting somewhere before) and Stede says I know instead of i love you too (although I did read a good take on how that wasn't what Ed needed to hear in the moment, but by not saying it-- he doesn't feel like Stede if that makes sense) he's not the man from the beginning of the season. killing ned really set him into this manic episode and I don't think he's over it yet or that Ed realizes he's still going through it.

don't get me wrong the good parts were good. they gave us a lot of closure it just didn't do it the justice it deserved. I'm going to have to rewatch this episode a few times just to try and process everything happening so fast.

i really hope that we get another season and its slow and domestic and Stede is able to find himself again with Ed.

but also excuse me while I WEEP over izzy calling him Eddie and dying knowing he found his family 😭

anyone else just fucking sobbing when Ed is reading the letter from Stede and then just bursting out laughing at the "YOU WROTE ME A LOVELY LETTER"

and excuse me they TATTOOED EACH OTHERS NAMES ON THEMSELVES???? AND THEY'RE NOT EVEN GOING TO SHOW IT???? Bruh (edit: I have been informed that the line could be referring to the act of grace contract and not literal tattoos but I REALLY HOPE IT'S LITERAL TATTOOS)

also the part where zheng is listing off their titles and she barely pauses between her title and Ed still makes me giggle because it sounded like "The Great Pirate Queen Blackbeard" which is totally accurate.

when they rest of the crew left after izzy told Ed they were his family and they loved him 🥺 just for Ed to stay back with Stede and Izzy on shore

he's not ready to be with that family just yet. just the two people he considered to have actually known him

A big ray of sunshine, I hope. I mean, Tank would insist I am anyways. I’ve been told I’m a gentle soul who helps people feel at home and it’s all I can ever hope to help the people I care about most feel. I can see most of my fan tributes be either really sweet, me being badass and slaying zombies (albeit with a scared expression) or maybe give hinted light at my own Great War inside myself. Those angsty works unfortunately is to be expected in the CoD Zombies storyline.

💌: How do people perceive your dynamic? What might people focus on most? Any misconceptions?

Based on the friends and fans who’ve been supporting my ship these few years, I’d say they do an accurate job! The best I can describe us is a protective jock and a bubbly nerd. We are usually focused on our sweetest moments, especially between us teaching each other new things (cooking together, Tank teaching me combat practice, etc.) or the mushy gush kissy stuff. Just thinking about it has me kicking my feet right now IRJTNSNFJSJDBS 💕💕(>\\\\<)

GOSH I honestly kind of feel curious about this. We’ll name this ship Pearls and Peonies

📝: How would your story in canon go? How would you influence the events of the original story?

I accidentally fell into the Deep 13 underground laboratory during a hike. Dr Clayton Forrester WAS going to kill me, but I talked my way into not dying because of his Mystery Science Theatre experiment. I have experience being traumatized with Z movies at a young age, which is a huge notch above cheesy B movies. I tell him I could work as an independent variable to use in the experiment and compare the results to his test subjects. He agrees and sends me up to the Satellite of Love with my backpack and a few belongings. I become apart of the crew and ever since have been making the most of myself up there with my found family. I wonder if Dr. Forrester’s secretary will join me up on the SOL…

So Stede boarding the revenge is like the most heartbreaking scene so far, change my mind. The place Stede loved and was proud of and was a home for his sea family and a safe space and where he met Ed is all destroyed and also a clue to Ed’s mindset. God that must hurt so much. And to top it all off he’s worried about Ed

I was getting really mad thinking that Vegas died, I was like "What? Really? Don't do this to me production crew. Please don't...", but, after that post credits scene... I forgive you for everything 🤣🤣🤣

IT WAS SO FREAKING CUTE. OMG... I can't even talk about how much I loved that scene. Macau being cute with his brother, oh my God. And I can't stop thinking about the conversations that Macau and Pete had while Vegas was sleeping. That "That was fast" from Macau, got me thinking they plotted making Vegas act cute AND I LOVED IT 😭😭😭😭

Also, so sad we didn't get a proper ending to KimChay🥺🥺🥺

Biggest disappointment.

Enchanté. The first episode was really cute, but then, I don't know what happened. I loved the whole "Find the Enchanté" thing just to be the own Theo who wrote it because he wanted Akk's attention... And that last episode, what was that? Out of nowhere, after doing all that book scene to get Akk, he's leaving just like that?! And Akk's sister saying those things to him??? That's her way of helping?? Really disappointed.

And I have to mention Cutie Pie. It's not bad, but I guess I waited too much for too long. Since the first announcement that Zee was going to be in a new BL, I was sooo hyped, but when I finally watched it, it didn't get me. Still going to watch it anyway because I love the actors and I loved the other couples, but I got really lazy, unfortunately🥺🥺

My #1 post of 2022

Okay, I just want to put it out what I'm feeling right now after EP13, but I'm going to focus only on PeteVegas because, too much happened in this episode.

First of all, I just need to leave something very clear here: I didn't knew anything about the novel before watching the series so, I was really blind and didn't know what to expect. That being said, let's move on.

I still don't know what I feel when I think about them. I started watching KinnPorsche BECAUSE of VegasPete, I wanted to see them together. Them Pete got captured and I realized the road that they would go.

I'm completely biased by Bible, so I didn't imagine that I would HATE his character. And I did. For a moment. Now I'm... Confused cause at the same time I want to kill him, I want to protect him ("At the same time I wanna hug you, I wanna wrap my hands around your neck - P!nk")

Something I'm really enjoying is to see how everyone interpret their relationship differently, that's amazing. So I want to leave here what I think they have.

I don't think it Love. I don't think it's anything really rational. I think they developed a toxic emotional support that they crave above anything else. I genuinely think they can't live without each other anymore because of this bounding. Vegas gets better because of Pete, but also he can reach his peak of destruction for Pete too. The same for Pete. He has a pure heart even after everything he did and have been through, but he fakes smiles and happiness too much. With Vegas, he can show the evil part of himself without being judged of anything. They are literally like Yin and Yang. They need each other for balance. Pete needs Vegas to be mean, and Vegas needs Pete to be good.

It's not love, it's balance. They both know what they are doing it's wrong, but still want it ("Mama, I'm in love with a criminal and this type of love, it's not rational, it's phisical - Britney")

Also, the scene where Pete was "eating" the ramyeon and breaks down crying, wow. I also saw a lot of people saying different things about it and, one of the things people said was that his friends and people o cares about him are around him but he is still left alone. I don't think the others left him alone just like that. He's visible hurt, both, inside and out, holding tears all the time... I would give him some time too. And, he may have asked to be alone for a while cause, Khul would talk to much, ask too much, and he's not in a good shape for all Khul's presence at that moment, you know?

And when he touches where the handcuffs were, his chest and neck where Vegas touched, I really think he was missing him, but his crying because he don't want to miss Vegas. Crying because because he knows it's wrong and unhealthy, but he's still worried, maybe even not for himself but for what Vegas may do without him. He can't control him if he's not near him. I guess it's obvious now that Vegas don't control Pete, Pete controls him.

And one last thing, yes, they can't kill each other because, like I said, they balance one another. If one of them dies, the other will crumble. If they hurt each other, they hurt themselves. That's why I think Pete couldn't pull the trigger and Vegas couldn't stab Pete.

All of this is just how I feel about them, how I read them myself.

I love seeing the other ways they are being read so, if you want to talk more about them or other couple, even other series, I will gladly talk to you. 🥰🥰

And I need to say, shout out to the whole KinnPorsche's crew cause I'm really impressed by this series 😍😍

Okay. Luz. She looks like she's seen some shit (which she absolutely has...) and is no longer the kid we met in season 1. I don't know if I can handle her being emotionally and mentally unstable from her trauma for much longer, it's just so fucking heartbreaking to watch her go through everything that's happening to her. Hell, she doesn't even know if Eda is okay!!!! From the looks of it, she hasn't been sleeping well either. She's got eye bags that can rival Hunter's at this point, which really isn't good. (Unless that's the dramatic lighting with weird shadowing, so I could be wrong.) And if I'm not mistaken, Luz is turning into her beta design!

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about there being a new episode coming soon. I'm so fucking excited that the story is going to continue, and that it didn't flat out get cancelled after season 2. But I'm also super worried that the shortage of time that they're getting is going to affect the effectiveness of how the story is told. It was rough watching season 2B, since every single episode mattered. There was no chance for the show to be light and happy. It was all moving the story along, trauma heavy, and very clearly there was no time to mix in anything else. Don't get me wrong; it was still enjoyable to watch. I love this show so much. But, it was still not quite as enjoyable as it could have been.

And with the art, there seems to be a time skip, which means they probably had to cut out any filler content. Which means we won't get to see any of the crew exploring the human realm and trying to earn their bearings. We won't get to see Luz and Amity go on their date. (probably. Dana might find a way to get that in there, cause there was the kiss in the midst of everything else last season) We won't get all the fun filler. I have a feeling that this episode is going to kick right off in the middle of something, and that's just where it's gonna go, instead of easing us into the story, which they could have done with a full length season.

So yeah. I'm really really excited!! And my hopes are up, hoping that they're gonna be able to pull off the quality of show that they were able to do these past two seasons. But I'm also worried, and that makes me a little hesitant to get so excited.

well, with one piece i love all the straw hats dynamics together, because of how they all take care of each other, but i'm a big zoro x sanji shipper. despite shipping them romantically, i also love the brother vibes they give to their crew. zosan always fight and argue with each other, but people forget that they both acknowledge each other's strengths as well. they are very much in sync when it comes to protecting the crew, and it's been shown many times that they trust the other to take care of their friends, so they're never worried when their crew is split because when those two know the other is with their friends they know everything will be fine <3 they trust each other so much, my babies 🥺

with black clover, as much as i love the black bulls dynamics like i love the straw hats, my favorite between them is asta and yami. i think it's so cute when asta looks up to yami and is in awe of everything that he does. its not a one sided thing either, because yami saw this kid who was basically an outcast and ridiculed for being different (just like he was) and still chose him to be in his squad with his other misfits. he teaches asta many things and helps him grow. they really are my top favorite mentor and student, father and son and big brother and little brother relationships.

fairy tail is pretty much similar with one piece and black clover. the guild is basically a whole family. natsu's team pretty much formed randomly, but they're dynamics all work and they make me smile and laugh.

sk8 the infinity episode 6 hooked me on their little skater family. the beach episode was so cute and wholesome. despite me shipping reki and langa, it's actually reki and miya's relationship i love the most. they are very much grumpy little brother and sunshine older brother. the way miya was very :/ when he first appeared, he chose to keep people at a distance because of what happened with his friends, but then reki came in like the sunshine boy he is and offered him friendship and a promise to never leave him. it hurt when reki pushed miya away, because reki made a promise and basically broke it and miya was so sad about it 😭 (i'm still bitter the show didn't have any kind of apology scene about that 😒) but their brother relationship means so much to me. i hope season 2 or the ova has at least some reki and miya brotherly scenes 🥺🙏

the promised neverland is just as you said. i love how everybody was just trying to survive, but all the kids came together and created a family with each other. emma, ray and norman's friendship and love for each other made me emotional. when the three of them reunited i was ugly crying.

Disco 4.07: ...But to Connect

Well, that was a terrible episode... JUST KIDDING LOL, I LOVED THIS ONE TOO.

Look, there’s plenty of bad-faith criticism of Discovery out there, and sadly too many good-faith bad takes, and way too much boring pissbaby whining—but there are also plenty of valid complaints to make about this show, and I’ve been making plenty of them myself, on this very blog, for three-and-a-half seasons.

The—let’s say “uneven”—quality to date isn’t exactly a surprise, given its clusterfuck of a production history; the well-documented turmoil and turnover in the writer’s room has had an obvious and undeniable impact on the quality of the narrative. (You could even say they’ve had a long road, getting from there to here.)

Everything about this show—the direction, production design, performances, editing, VFX, music—has always been better than the scripts, but it’s not like the scripts were entirely without potential. In fact, the sheer amount of unrealized potential has always been the most frustrating thing to me about Star Trek: Discovery.

Well, I guess I have to find a new most-frustrating thing (and experto credite, I will), because holy fucking shit, y’all… this is what I’ve been saying Disco could be. It’s still not flawless—and they’ve apparently ditched subtlety as thoroughly as they ditched the 23rd century—but I do. not. care. I’m getting one thousand percent more of what I want from this season than I got from the last three seasons combined, and don’t get me wrong—I liked Season 2, and I really liked Season 3—but Season 4 feels like a completely different show. A much, much, much better show.

Buckle up for mid-season spoilers:

Sorry Michael, but my cat Nora wouldn’t fuck with that little holo-toy either—based on her reaction to laser pointers, she needs something she can sink her teeth into—literally—once she catches it. If she can’t pretend to sever its spinal cord, my picky little princess is not interested.

I guess “The Measure of a Woman” would have been too on-the-nose as a title for this episode? Jokes aside, I like how they seem to be positioning Zora as a Data-esque character: the AI who’s a sweet, well-meaning nerd, who’s also still learning organic social graces. Also, the problem with her attaining sentience isn’t that she’ll turn malicious, or pursue her own inscrutable cyber-agenda, but that she loves the crew so much she’s making irrational choices to protect them? AAAAAAAAA 😭😭😭

It figures that Dr. Kovich—who wears glasses and a tie in the 32nd century like a full-time Ren Faire weirdo—also uses a QWERTY-ass-looking keyboard on his holo-computer.

And then he dropped his whole CV in that scene like Michelle Paradise is literally reading this blog? (Ha ha, but also… 🥺👉👈)

Cleveland Booker, I love you like only a lesbian can love a fictional man created by another lesbian, but could you please at least skim The Art of War like, once? If Species 10-C can harness the power of hypergiant stars to—I’m guessing here, based on the themes of this season—accidentally slap entire planets to pieces, there probably isn’t much you can accomplish against them with sheer brute force, my guy. I’m also thinking about the wasp nest on my garage 15 years ago that I was going to ignore until winter (out of laziness), and then one of them stung me on the ear while I was putting my bike away and those fuckers were gone by the weekend. If it’s really a five-minute solution, what’s to lose by asking “Why did you blow up my planet” real quick before trying to kick them in the nuts through subspace?

A real delight to have Phumzile Sitole back as Adira’s old boss, General Ndoye, and in a nifty little hat too! Jonathan Frakes, who directed her previous episode, said in an interview that she’d been planning to quit acting when she booked the gig, but she had such a great time on Disco that she decided to stick with it. So it’s extra wholesome to see her again! I especially loved every time someone proposed violence at the forum and the camera just cut to Ndoye silently nodding like “fuck yeah, blow stuff up.” 😂

President Rillak evaded my expectations once again when Michael suggested she had a personal stake in Earth rejoining the Federation, and instead of hiding behind a bland talking point, Rillak said quite candidly that she was both personally and politically invested. (And it turns out she’s got mommy issues too—take a drink!)

I frickin’ loved how Kovich insisted on… uh-oh, here it comes again… absolute candor when sorting out the issues between Zora and the crew. Emotional honesty: it’s not just a good idea, it’s an overarching narrative theme! (Plus: “We always mean well to ourselves, Captain. The problem is what that means for others.” Ooooof.)

I’m pretty sure that they mentioned Control more times in this episode than in the entirety of Season 3.

Gray and Adira standing up for Zora made me cry happy tears. Say what you will, but I think we’re in good hands with Gen ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha here.

The writers are lucky I don’t mind a little massive amount of didactic speechifying in my science fiction, because for real, I’ve read Peter Watts books that were less transparent about giving every single character an entire TED Talk about every relevant philosophical viewpoint on the table. (Blindsight is still my favourite vampire novel, btw.)

I’m glad nobody except Stamets in full Writer’s Devil’s Advocate mode really entertained Zora’s failsafe solution. “If you stop trusting me, just go ahead and summarily execute me” is uhhhh not really how we treat each other around here, Zora!

Just as I was starting to get sick of Tarka’s shit, he dropped his motive for attacking the DMA—stealing its power source to leave this universe entirely and find his “““friend”””—and Jesus did I ever pivot fast from “this chaotic-neutral mad scientist isn’t quite as endearing as he thinks he is” to just, like, sobbing in my kitchen. I’d say it hit me out of nowhere, but (a) the score reminded me of Jerry Goldsmith’s Star Trek: First Contact theme, one of my favourite pieces of Star Trek music, and (b) I’ve been 1,000 miles from the love of my life for 18 months now because of this fucking pandemic. Tarka might be the most relatable character on this show for me right now. If he’s telling the truth, I hope he gets what he wants—and if he was lying to manipulate Book, I hope Grudge eats his eyeballs.

Speaking of music, I’m pretty sure the theme that played during Paul and Michael’s overlapping speeches has appeared in this season already—I remember finding it unusual to hear so much non-diagetic piano in Star Trek—and maybe even where it changes into the main Disco theme and the woodwinds come in—but combined with the dialogue (or double monologue or whatever) this time around, it really, really hit me.

I did feel like Michael (and/or Rillak?) could have leaned harder on the point that, if first contact with Species 10-C did go awry, they could immediately deploy Tarka’s destructive solution anyway. I’m sure a lot of the pro-violence faction would have agreed that approaching 10-C with a carrot and a stick that big in their back pocket would be a logical move, right? (I know, I know, that’s not what this episode is about, but it was nagging at me the entire time.)

I guess the conflict over leaving Felix at the prison the other week was foreshadowing for Michael and Book being on opposite sides of the vote here. And once again, I’m pretty firmly on one of the sides—Michael’s, this time—but I also feel like I understand the other side, and how they got to their position both intellectually and emotionally, and even though I don’t agree with those conclusions, even though they make my heart feel heavy and sad… I can’t not respect it.

Also, shoutout to the realism of finding yourself on the other side of that kind of ideological gulf from someone you love. There are no good solutions there; the best you can do, I think, is be completely honest with each other and yourselves. And the worst part about Michael and Book’s situation is that they’re already doing that, and I think it’s already done everything it can. 💔 Additional shoutout to the face journeys of both Sonequa Martin-Green and David Ajala for making me feel like my heart got kicked in the stomach.

Anyway. It cracked me up when they established Zora’s personhood by locating her inner clip show device—so we know she’s at least as sentient as Riker, that’s a start. AND SHE’S JOINING STARFLEET??? THIS IS LIT-ER-AL-LY EVERYTHING I’VE EVER WANTED, OMFGGGG 😭😭😭😭😭😭

…though I guess that means Zora doesn’t need Gray as a permanent therapist, awwww. I can’t say I didn’t see it coming, and it’s a storyline that makes sense for him and Adira, but ohhhhh, that goodbye scene was bittersweet. (I’m glad they’ve figured out a way to write queer characters off this show without killing them, lmao.) And Adira knowing, before Gray even had to break it to them, what he wanted to do, and being whole-heartedly supportive and encouraging, was just unspeakably sweet. I’m like twice Adira’s age; how are they such a role model for me?

Another thing I wanted, never thought I’d get, and appear to be actually getting in spades? A genuine romance storyline with T’Rina and Saru! And according to his Ready Room interview, it was Doug Jones’s own idea? He picked up on some Sa’Rina ~vibes~ when he read the script—vibes that the writers apparently hadn’t put there on purpose—and mentioned them to Tara Rosling, who saw them too, and they played a little bit of tension in their Season 3 scenes… and then the writers picked it up for Season 4! I love that so, so much.

I seriously can’t stop laughing at the parallels between Book’s decision to go off with Tarka to destroy the DMA and—spoilers for the Netflix reboot of She-Ra, I guess?—Glimmer choosing to activate the Heart of Etheria at the end of that show’s Season 4. In both cases you have a good-hearted but impulsive character who’s suffered a profound loss and feels a responsibility to stop that from happening again… and tries to do so by unleashing a horrific and destructive power that they don’t understand and can’t control, endangering everyone’s lives and alienating their loved ones. (Also, in both cases, you have me yelling at my TV at 6:30 in the morning.)

Honestly, continuing to parallel Glimmer might be the best outcome for Book: spending the first half of Season 5 in a redemption arc apologizing to Michael (and Grudge) would be better than what feels much more likely for him right now: getting swatted out of space by Species 10-C like—well, like a wasp.

Sparkly princess feelings aside, the “installation” of the spore drive into Book’s programmable-matter interface was by far one of the coolest “oh shit, we’re in the future-future” moments that Disco 2.0 has done yet. More of that too, please. (Finally, my last @ for Book: if you don’t want people calling your ship a “floating bachelor pad,” the very least you could do is give it a NAME they could use instead.)

I wrote this about last year’s finale:

A lot of people were worried Vance was going to turn out to be evil, but I was more worried he was going to end up making a heroic sacrifice for (and/or inspired by) the Disco crew—and he sort of does, but it’s not his life he sacrifices, it’s peace with the Emerald Chain. If the only path to “survival” is as the fraudulently legitimizing façade of benevolence over a corrupt, capitalistic criminal empire, well… that’s the destruction of everything the Federation has ever stood for anyway.

And that’s, by my count, Star Trek: Discovery’s third consecutive season-ending reminder that our principles and ideals, our better natures, must inform every decision we make—every single one, in war and in peace—because a victory that costs you the ability to look at yourself in the mirror isn’t going to feel like a victory at all.

Well. Not only do they seem to be going 4-for-4 on this (profoundly important and perennially relevant) theme, this year they didn’t even wait for the season finale to have Michael Burnham make a big speech about it.

Does that put the back half of this season in uncharted thematic territory? I guess we have to wait five weeks (ughhhhh) to find out. But according to the trailer I saw after the credits, we’ll at least get to see Michael Burnham in some kind of civilian setting tossing around gambling chips like a total fucking badass… so who knows, it might even be worth the wait.
