How to Pay Hospital Bills When You’re Flat Broke

It’s a fucking travesty that the leading cause of bankruptcy in these United States is medical bills. Not credit card bills nor risky investments. Not even student loans, but hospital bills. Invoices racked up through freak accidents and diseases the patient certainly didn’t ask for and would probably prefer to live without.

To our readers in other, more civilized countries, you’re dismissed. This week we’re going to be dissecting a uniquely American problem: exorbitant medical bills and how to pay them.

The CEO of GoFundMe, an online crowd-funding platform, never dreamed that his company would become synonymous with “I’m broke and need $300,000 to pay for my child’s cancer treatment.” What he envisioned as a way for entrepreneurs and artists to raise money for their passion projects has become the last desperate hope of sick and injured Americans on the verge of total financial ruin.

i generally don't post about my personal life on here, but i went to high school with ariel and watching her cystic fibrosis progress so rapidly in recent years has been devastating. she's entering hospice today and is raising money to pay for her care, as her insurance won't cover all of her medical bills and as we all know healthcare in the united states is unbelievably expensive.

And then things got worse

Which means missing a week of work, and an ER bill. I'll be asking family for some help with my credit card, but with my regular bills still needing to be paid, I'm rapidly outpacing myself in spending versus paying.

Mom is Home!

Since the middle of last month, my mom has been in the hospital with blood clots in her legs and lungs as well as a severe case of covid. We finally got her back home to my dad today. It's a long road of physical and mental recovery now.

She now needs to take some meds for the rest of her life but her insurance won't fully cover it.

Once I finish making my new commission list, I'll post it and would love to help pay her bills.

I uhm hate to do this but i have hospital and doctors visit bills to pay. My check was only 425 because I was sick, and that isnt enough for me to pay off those bills and to be able to feed myself and my cat. I also think my parents are about to start demanding rent from me. Any amount of spare money is appreciated.

Raising money for Mom's Medical bills.

My Mom recently suffered a minor stroke leaving her unable to walk or move around at all without my help.

She was my caretaker as I'm physically disabled as well so it's been an insane amount of pressure (and pain) on me though I would do anything for her.

Unfortunately we are running pretty low on funds because she has four new medications she has to take monthly on top of the 4 she's already taking. We also have the hospital/ambulance bill and we also need to purchase some tools for her to use around the house that her insurance doesn't cover such as a blood pressure cuff and other things to help her get around more easily.

I have a ko-fi and as much as I hate asking for donations; this would be a good time to do so.

If you donate and leave a reference to a character I'll do a little doodle for you in exchange. It might take a good while as I'm VERY EXTREMELY busy and taking my free time for me but I will get around to it.

If you are an American who is lucky enough to have health insurance, you almost certainly have free medical care coming your way.

Several annual and semi-annual services are available to you with no copay—and you have absolutely no reason not to use them. Technically, you have already bought them, as their cost is built into the premiums you’ve already paid. And your body will thank you for it! Even if you feel perfectly healthy, establishing a baseline of health will help your medical professionals detect problems early.

Pro-tip: don’t wait until the end of the year to do all this stuff! Every medical office I’ve ever been to is slammed during November and December as everyone tries to use up their benefits. Schedule it now to avoid the crush.

I Need Help

I have been billed for an aircast boot/crutches from the hospital for fractured metatarsals, and my toes are so infected that I may require debridement. I have also been diagnosed with a new eating disorder on top of my Atypical Anorexia, and Binge Eating Disorder. It is called “Anorexia Athletic”. Apparently it’s not even in the DSM-5 ‘yet’ according the doctor I spoke to. I am in desperate need of new shoes as I have been using hand-me-downs. However, I am more concerned about the hospital bill at the moment. Every donation, no matter how small, makes a difference. I am on disability and fasting for 72 to 240hrs at a time helps me be able to pay the bills when I can’t even afford food.
