Bucky unrolled the baking paper as Bing Crosby and the Andrews sisters finished singing. There was a pause before a chorus of voices sang oooohs and aaaaah, growing in intensity. He smiled, knowing what was about to come was going to be poppier than the previous song. Perfect to shape the cookies.

He grabbed his wooden spoon as the group sang ‘tabadabadabada’, cocked his hips and used the spoon as a mic to sing.

Bucky walked back to his tray, nodding along the music. Even though he sang the entire time, he managed to shape some cookies- a lot less efficiently than he should have, that was certain. When the singers started clapping, he totally abandoned the cookies and joined them instead. He sang until the track ended, then picked back his spoon to finish the last cookie.

“That was adorable.”

Bucky froze for a fraction of a second then turned around. “Steve! I didn’t hear you coming back!”

“I didn’t expect you to, you seemed very… occupied.” “I’m baking”, Bucky retorted.

“I shouldn’t have said anything. I should have recorded you then sent the video to Shuri”, he said with a smirk.

Bucky arched an eyebrow then waved his spoon in Steve’s direction. “Joke on you if you had done that, because I learned this recipe with her.”

“Really? What is it?”

“You’ll see.”

“Come on.” Bucky tutted. “Buck, why do you have pepper on the counter?”

“Wait, and see.”

Steve huffed then leaned against the doorframe.

“Are you almost done? I could use a hand getting the tree inside.” Bucky nodded, satisfied his lover asked for help instead of trying to get the tree inside on his own, consequences be damned. “This batch in a minute, I just need to finish that one. What do you need me for, exactly?”

“Not much, I can lift the tree easily, but I don’t want to bump it everywhere.”

“Alright”, Bucky said as he finished the cookie. “Settin’ the timer and I’ll join you.”

“Okay!” Steve came to peck his lips then went back outside.

Bucky set the timer - not really necessary as they both could keep track of time pretty accurately, but well, you never know - then followed Steve’s steps. He got out of the house, passed their nicely decorated courtyard - the reindeer was very nice, he really liked that one - and rounded the car.

Steve hadn’t taken the tree out yet, so Bucky looked around then watched the sky for a few seconds. Then his partner made a noise and Bucky turned to see what was going on.

Instead, he found himself… with his face full of pine needles. Ugh. Pine tree did not taste good.

“Steven Grant Rogers! Get that tree out of my fucking face!” he growled.

Strangely, it worked. At once, the tree was removed from his face. Alright, even if it didn’t taste good nor was edible, it smelt good - thankfully, because this was going to stay in their living room for weeks. It was… tall. Bucky blinked. Fuck, this was a huge tree.

“Steve. Baby, love of my life… You couldn’t find anything bigger?”

Steve, already walking towards the house, whipped around and almost hit him in the face -again. Bucky thanked his quick reflexes as he narrowly avoided a branch.

“They were selling those for a charity” he answered with his ‘don’t try me’ face.

Cute. But fair enough, Bucky supposed. They were both retired now and while Bucky was content to see others do the job, he knew it was hard for Steve to sit on the sidelines. He helped young people, gave classes, but the itch to do more was always there. The urge to fight had shifted to more peaceful options, at least.

“Alright doll, let’s put this huge tree in our living room”, Bucky conceded. “Somehow” They might need to either make up something or drive to a store to buy something else to put the tree in.

Bucky closed the car then walked to their front door to open it to Steve. After a quick look, this wouldn’t do, so Bucky told Steve to stop, then went to the living room and opened the french doors. They brought the tree inside, set it carefully on the floor then inspected their mount. It fit, so after some maneuvering on both of their parts, the tree was up in the living room.

Bucky let Steve start to put the lights on - after asking Steve if he felt up to it, to which his partner answered by pinching Bucky’s ass - and went back to his cookies.

The timer went off shortly after Bucky left Steve to his own devices, and he put the second batch in the oven. He tidied up the kitchen while the biscuits cooked, then joined Steve to decorate their tree.                                                      

Later, when all the garland, lights and baubles had been hung up, the two supersoldiers relaxed on the couch. Bucky was straddling Steve’s lap and they were exchanging lazy kisses, when suddenly he thought back to the way Steve had casually carried the tree on his shoulder earlier.

“Stevie?”

“Yes?”

“Was the tree heavier or lighter than Mjolnir?”

Steve groaned and Bucky never got his answer as his partner flipped them around and pressed him into the couch cushions. After that… Well, let’s say that particular hammer was the last of his concerns.

Summary: Cursed. Cursed until he can find a way to melt his closed off and frozen heart. Only given 8 years to find someone to love him despite half of his face being burned and deformed. With a withering tree on his bedside table held as a reminder of the time he had slipping by him. Time that would slip by and make him stay like this forever, until he meets her. Will she be able to melt that heart of his and restore him back to himself, or just break him further?

           “You Min Yoongi, have no respect or love for others. You pushed away a little girl who needed your help to find her mother. She was a test, a test to see if what they say about you is true. If you really are as cold as they say.”

           “Well sweetheart, what can I tell you? Better believe it.”

           The enchantress laughed, knowing good and well that Yoongi had no idea what was going to be coming next for him. “Well” She said to him, now starting to reveal who she really was, “since you want to have nothing but ugliness in your heart, I might as well let what’s inside match the outside.”

           At this point, Yoongi stood there shocked and speechless at the sight in front of him. He began to grow confused as to what she was going on about, until he felt like his face was peeling off. The pain he was feeling was unbearably horrendous. He went into look at his reflection in the mirror of the car parked next to him, when he noticed the left half of his face was burning off. “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!”

           Choosing to ignore his cry for an explanation, she continued on by saying, “You have 8 years from now Min Yoongi. If you cannot find someone who you love more than yourself, you will stay this way forever so everyone can see the ugliness that you radiate through who you are.” And with that, she handed Yoongi a mini tree, symbolizing the Tree Of Life. “You have until this tree wither’s away. When the tree dies, you stay like this, forever.” She then disappeared into the night, leaving this beastly looking man shocked and angered.

           Violette was walking to her office after grabbing some briefings from her receptionist. Today she was preparing for a big meeting with a new composer from Big Hit Entertainment. He was going to be coming in to talk about legal issues as far as copyrights to his music and personal information about a living will, etc. Just as she was organizing herself together, the receptionist she had just seen called over the intercom, “Ms. Greene? Your 2 o’clock is here for you. I sent him upstairs, but he was wearing his hoodie and a baseball cap on-“

           “So why in the world did you let him up without checking if it was who he said he was?” Violette said angrily in the intercom.

           “He had the paperwork and identification/validation that he was in fact the man from Big Hit. He’s clear.”

            She was still not convinced, in fact, she was angered by the lack of security that she neglected. “If anything happens, you’re fired.”

           Just as she finished ranting, a knock came on her door. “Come in.” She replied. As Violette was getting the papers for the meeting, a man with a black hoodie and a matching baseball cap on with jeans came in. He was hiding his face and she could only make out the bottom portion of his face. She noticed a small burn scar on the left side of his face. Perhaps that’s why he’s hiding himself. He’s insecure about the scar. She started to feel bad for him, remembering how insecure she felt about how she looked in high school, and how she just wanted to hide so people wouldn’t stare at her either.But he can’t wear that in here. That’s my strict rule.

           “Hello Ms. Greene Violette. I’m Min Yoongi from Big Hit. It’s nice to meet you.” He said emotionless, sticking out his hand to greet her. She took his gesture and shook his hand replying, “The pleasure is all mine. Do you mind taking off the hoodie and hat, at least during the meeting? It’s company policy.”

           “Fuck company policy, I’m keeping this on.” He replied back to her.

           “Excuse me?”

           “I said, fuck your company rules. You’re beginning to irritate me, and you won’t like it when I’m irritated. Now, can we please get on with the meeting before I lose interest and find some place better?”

           She looked at him in disbelief, but still was not going to take this kind of disrespect. “With all do respect Mr. Min, you need to relax. It’s just me in here, so you should feel comfortable taking that off. It’ll be better if I can see you as well, so we can discuss things properly.”

           With a heavy sigh and an annoyed expression showing a hint of anger, he did what she asked and took off his hat and hoodie, now fully vulnerable and showing his hideous appearance all in the open for her to see. Holding his breath, and already prepared with a comeback for how she would react, he waited for her to say something or look at him a certain way, but she didn’t. She’s just sitting there, now smiling at me and gesturing to sit. He thought to himself. “Thank you. Now, please Mr. Min, have a seat and let’s get this started. I’m looking forward to working with you.”

           “You didn’t react…” He mumbled, not realizing he had said his thoughts out loud.

           “Are you referring to your scar? Why would I? By the way you came in here hiding, I assume you already feel insecure about it. Plus, it doesn’t bother me. You’re still Min Yoongi.” She said smiling.

           Yoongi was shocked to say the least. In the last 7 years, she is the first person to see him fully unraveled and NOT react horrified, surprised or disgusted. Wow. I wasn’t expecting that. She sees beyond this ugly mask that I’m still a human being.She was something different to him, something he hadn’t experienced in 7 years of having this damn scar, and it was catching his interest. She was catching his interest.

Bill Buckner 1949-2019

It is very sad to hear about the passing of Bill Buckner. He was one of my all-time favorite Cubs players. In the early 80’s, while playing in a softball league in Chicago, I wore number 22 on my jersey in honor of Buckner. He played for the Cubs for 8 years of his 22-year Major League career (1977-1984), appearing in 974 games, about 40% of his career total. He started his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers as an outfielder. He was traded to the Cubs in 1977 and was shifted to first base due to chronic ankle problems. His hitting style was not atypical of a first baseman as he was not a power hitter. He was a contact hitter with a consistently high batting average. With the Cubs, he won the National League batting title in 1980 with a .324 average. He didn’t walk a lot, but he was an excellent doubles hitter, leading the NL in doubles in two of his seasons with the Cubs. He was also a good situational hitter which gave him the ability to drive in runs. He had more than 100 RBI’s in three seasons.  Early in the 1984 season, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox for future Hall-of-Famer Dennis Eckersley.

Unfortunately, he is most remembered for a ground ball that got under his glove and went through his legs, leading to a loss in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. I hesitated to bring that up in this post, but I decided to mention it for purposes of trying to set the record straight. The Red Sox had taken a 5-3 lead in the top of 10th inning. Yes, they needed just three outs in the bottom of the 10th to win the World Series. However, here are a few points to consider:

·         Bad pitching: Buckner would have never been put in that situation if the Red Sox bullpen had not imploded. Calvin Shiraldi came in to close the game as a relief pitcher in the bottom of the 10th. After getting the first two outs, he fell apart. He gave up three consecutive singles, allowing a run to score. He was replaced by Bob Stanley. Stanley throws a wild pitch, allowing another run to score. Now the game is tied 5-5, and the batter, Mookie Wilson, hits a grounder that goes between Buckner’s legs for an error and the winning run scores. Three hits and a wild pitch does not put the onus of the loss solely on Buckner.

·         Bad managing: Why was Buckner in the game at this point? John McNamara’s team scores two runs in the top of the tenth to take the lead. It’s time for defensive replacements! Buckner’s ankles were so bad at that point, he could barely walk let alone field. If you watch the replay of the error, it is clear he had trouble getting his body squared up to make the play because he could hardly move his feet. His ankles were so bad, he couldn’t wear baseball spikes. He played with shoes that, if I remember correctly, were more like high-top wrestling shoes. At that point in the game, McNamara had only used nine position players. There is no way Buckner should have been playing first base in that situation when McNamara could have inserted a replacement.

·         The Red Sox had another shot: Over the years, I have sometimes heard people erroneously refer to that loss as Game 7 of the Word Series. It was, in fact, Game 6. The team loss deprived the Red Sox of winning the WS that night, but they still had another shot at it in Game 7. They did not get the job done in Game 7, losing to the Mets 8-5.

·         The Curse of The Bambino: The Red Sox had one of the longest WS droughts in history at that time (1986). They had not won a WS since 1918. Many blamed the drought on the Curse of The Bambino; the infamous “trade” at the end of the 1919 season where Red Sox owner Harry Frazee shipped Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in exchange for cash, allegedly to finance a Broadway musical. Whether or not one believes in the curse, that fact is the drought continued and that served to magnify the Game 6 loss and unjustly, Buckner’s error. (The curse was finally broken in 2004 after 86 years.)

Unfortunately, Buckner’s life was rather miserable after that. Nobody would ever let him forget that error. The media and the fans continued to perpetuate it. For several years, Buckner wanted nothing to do with Boston, but ownership eventually reached out to him and he returned to Fenway after he retired to make peace with the fans.

While his career was not quite Hall of Fame caliber, he was still an outstanding ballplayer who played hard every day. Rest in peace Bill Buckner.

New Year’s Eve

“What time is it?” you mumbled from your place against Tyler’s chest.

“Eleven.”

“Eleven?” you groaned. “That means there’s still an hour until midnight.”

Tyler laughed and pressed a kiss to your forehead, “Yes, love. That’s how time works.”

“I want to go to bed.”

He brushed a hand through your hair, “It’s New Year’s Eve. That’s not allowed.”

You sighed and buried your face further into his chest. Even though you and Tyler had done nothing but lounge around the house all day, you were still tired and ready to curl up in bed with him.

“Fine,” you mumbled.

Tyler started to shift, but you merely whined and wrapped yourself tighter around him.

“Love,” he laughed lightly. “I just want to be able to look at you.”

You slowly rolled off of Tyler and pushed yourself into a sitting position. He was sitting cross-legged in front of you with the slightest hint of a smile on his face. His hair was still messy from the nap that you two had taken earlier that day, so you reached out and fixed a couple strands.

“Why did you want to look at me?” you asked.

“I just like looking at you,” he said as his smile grew even wider. “I’m glad that I got to spend this year with you.”

“I’m glad that I got to spend this year with you too.”

He smiled and rested a hand on your knee. You leaned forward and gently pressed your lips to his. It only took a few seconds for him to start smiling, only causing you to start giggling.

“Sorry,” he muttered as you pulled away. “You still make me nervous.”

“Shouldn’t it be the other way around?” you raised an eyebrow at him.

He shook his head, “I don’t think so.”

Tyler took hold of your hands and laced his fingers through yours. His smile slowly faded as he stared down at the plain fabric of the couch.

“Are you alright, love?” you asked.

His eyes locked to yours as if he had just been pulled from a daydream, “Yeah. I’m just thinking about everything that happened this year.”

“It was a big year for us,” you smiled. “A new album, shooting music videos, the tour...”

“The engagement,” Tyler said, his dorky smile once again returning.

“Of course, how could I forget?”

You looked down at the ring on your finger. Tyler had proposed while you were in Iceland to shoot the first of the music videos. It had come as a total surprise, despite the fact that you and Tyler had been discussing marriage for quite some time.

“I think that’s my favorite moment from this year.”

“Mine too,” you said, leaning forward to give him another quick kiss.

“This year would have been a lot different without you.”

“I can’t even imagine not having you in my life this year,” you sighed.

Tyler gave your hands a light squeeze, “Now I’m going to be in your life every year.”

“I don’t have a problem with that.”

“What time is it?” you called from the kitchen.

“11:59! Get in here!” Tyler answered.

You quickly dried off the mug that you had been cleaning and ran into the living room. Tyler had set up a clock on the TV so that you could countdown the exact number of seconds until the new year started. He wrapped an arm around your shoulder as you stood next to him.

“This feels weird,” you said as the seconds ticked down.

“It’s kind of a weird tradition, if you think about it.”

“Yeah.”

You both went quiet then, too mesmerized by the clock to say much else.

“This is it,” Tyler said when there were five seconds left.

“Goodbye, 2018,” you added.

Tyler pulled you into a kiss as soon as the clock hit midnight. You wrapped your arms around him and held him as close to you as you humanly could. It still amazed you every day that you were with someone as wonderful as Tyler. He finally ended the kiss and pressed his forehead to yours. Outside, you could hear people yelling in the streets and banging pots and pans together.

“Happy New Year,” you whispered.

“Happy New Year.”

“Now do we get to go to bed?” you grinned.

“If you want.”

“Yes!”

You quickly slid out of Tyler’s arms and ran upstairs. He stayed behind to double check that all the lights were off and the doors and windows were locked.

“I’m surprised you’re not asleep already,” Tyler laughed as he shuffled into the bedroom.

You smiled over the pile of blankets that was on top of you, “I was waiting for you.”

“I’ll be there in a second.”

You kicked your feet absentmindedly as you waited for Tyler to get ready for bed. It couldn’t have been more than five minutes before he was sliding under the covers with you, prompting you to immediately curl up into his side.

“What a good start to 2019,” you smiled.

“I agree.”

“I love you, Ty.”

“I love you too,” he said before pressing a kiss to the top of your head. “Thanks for sticking with me throughout this year.”

“I wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

“Now you should get some rest. We have a big year ahead of us.”

“Same goes for you.”

You turned so that you could give Tyler one final, proper kiss. It wasn’t the best of kisses since both of you were half asleep, but you didn’t mind.

By the time that you had finally made yourself comfortable on Tyler’s chest, he was already beginning to snore lightly. You were in pretty much the same position; as soon as your eyes closed, you were already beginning to drift off.

You couldn’t have asked for a better end to the year.

Melissa, I must say that I have heard many odd phrases in my lifetime both directly and in passing but never something akin to ‘I got burned with Holy Water once while at the Vatican' even with faulty translations at best. I would assume their would be a good story in correlation with that statement? I find it refreshing that you can take rejection so well despite stating that this is a regular occurrence for you. It takes a lot of time and practice for something like that not to effect you anymore and in the few times that I have been on the brunt end it does still carry a sting for me. But in private mind you as I cannot have my competitors or coworkers see me in a state of disarray. While I cannot say with any true glee that I have always been for the sciences ( my heart has always been on external things that tend to change more rapidly and could be controlled at a faster rate) than what concerns the inner workings of the human body much less than that of an animal however, I do have some know how about avian species and reptiles as Sherlock was wont to play with them. I am quite pleased that you attempted the puzzle and even more so that it is correct. My only issue is that if I took you up on a partnership is that you cannot be vindictive toward clients in a direct way. As a partnership with me would include dealing with some rather self-centered diplomats or government officials I'm afraid that in any instance of 'wrong doing' we would simply grin and bear it until the proper time comes to exploit it for personal gain. You can't exactly run the world if you burn too many bridges and make far too many enemies and you can see that with Mr. Moriarty's circles as well.  You may not be too fond of the partnership considering on how  big these meetings tend to run but rest assured we do need more  Esperanto speakers.
