I Just Watched: Society of the Snow (2023)
Tumblr media
I don’t think I’ll ever be boarding on an aeroplane again after watching this!!! 😰
This was the most stressful and the most terrifying film I have ever seen. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through! I spent a good chunk of the runtime hugging my legs close to my body in absolute terror! I’m not joking! 😧
The film is based on the harrowing true story of when Flight 571, while flying from Uruguay to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes Mountains, and the people who survived the accident work together to survive while trying to navigate their way home.
I wasn’t familiar with the story going into it. My parents have heard of it though, so I had to rely on them most of the time to know if what we were watching was accurate or not. I was also a little apprehensive upon reading the film’s synopsis because it sounded like your typical Hollywood blockbuster where they’re likely to glorify certain events and miscast actors who portrayed the real people involved in these events.
While watching the film however, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn’t feel blockbuster-y to me at all! Everything felt incredibly intimate, as if you’re watching a documentary with the way it was shot and acted. It felt grounded in reality thanks to the stunning cinematography and wonderful acting from the cast. The casting was excellent and the acting phenomenal. So much so, that I grew to care about the characters they portrayed and the perils they faced. Everyone was fully committed to their roles and shone like stars in the sky. I was admittedly close to tears by the end. It was so beautiful, I loved it! 🥲
I found out after doing some research that a lot of what happened in the film was accurate to the source material, including the scenes that involved c******lism. Having that bit of information in the film made my jaw drop. That was a very bold move on the film’s part! It was very disturbing to witness, but I enjoyed it regardless. Maybe a couple of minor details here and there were a little inaccurate, but that didn’t bother me in the slightest.
I’ve just learned that J. A. Bayona directed this. It’s a name you might not be familiar with, but he was the one who directed one of my favourite disaster films The Impossible (2012), which starred Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, and a very young Tom Holland. Funnily enough, that film was also based on a horrifying true event. Instead of a plane in the Andes, it’s a tsunami in Thailand in 2004; an event my parents also remember reading and hearing about on the news. I can imagine Bayona researching the hell out of these events to make sure the stories he tells are as close to accurate as possible, and he delivers to an insane degree every single time.
On another note, Michael Giacchino composed the score for this film. It’s not quite as memorable as his other work for, say, Pixar for example, but it suited the tone of the film exceptionally well. So if you’re a fan of his music, I recommend giving it a listen.
Overall, an utterly compelling and terrifying film to sit through. It filled its 2 1/2 hr long runtime very well. I cannot recommend this film enough! Give it a watch if you have the time.
(Now I need to watch it again in the original Spanish language. We watched the English dub and it was actually pretty good. English dubbed versions of foreign languages are notoriously awful (at least, by Netflix’s standard), so I was surprised by that. I’ll need to see how it compares with the original Spanish version though.)

No one asked, but I felt like sharing these little banners I made for all of my current and WIP fanfics using InShot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yep, they’re all Seb-centric fics! 😅
I’ve never used InShot before. I’ve used Photoshop numerous times at college, so this was a familiar experience for me. I had so much fun doing these and I loved how some of them came out. 😍🥰
I plan on making more of them in the future. I just need to figure out how to upload them all onto AO3. 🤔 For now, they’re sitting dormant in Google Drive because the storage space on my phone is nearly full and I needed to find a place for them so I could find them again.

It’s been a Bryan Adams kind of day today. No idea why, I just felt like listening to him. It’s not even summer yet! Ah well, I was craving some Bry and rules are meant to be broken! ❤️🇨🇦🎸
I asked my mum if she had any CD’s from him and she very kindly gave me some for me to listen to. One was his 7th studio album called 18 Til I Die (1996) and the other was a compilation album called So Far So Good (1993).

I Just Watched: High Fidelity (2000)
Tumblr media
(Originally posted to Letterboxd on 17th August 2023)
Rob Gordon is the most likeable unlikeable protagonist to ever exist. I hate this man’s guts but I love him at the same time. Get me?
The sole premise of this entire film is essentially focused on this man moping around, talking about his eclectic knowledge and taste in music and his past relationships for roughly 2 hours. Sure, it might sound boring on the surface, but it’s actually quite engaging and entertaining and occasionally very funny.
Our protagonist likes to narrate his thoughts and feelings to the audience through the old-fashioned art of fourth wall breaking, as if he were Ferris Bueller. And like Ferris Bueller, the narrations were very organic and didn’t feel out of place. John Cusack really hooks you in to what he’s talking about and he makes you listen to every word. I could imagine him taking me to the pub and having these conversations with me. What a night that would be! 🥰😘
Seeing as everyone who saw this film is doing this, I’m going to list my Top 5 Favourite Things to come out of this film:
#1: The soundtrack! One of the best I’ve ever heard. I’m going straight on Spotify and hunt it down after I’ve finished writing this up.
#2: John Cusack’s acting! His best performance by a mile.
#3: Jack Black. Just…Jack Black.
#4: HOW DID THEY GET THE REAL BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN ON HERE? WHAT THE HELL?! THAT’S CRAZY!!! 🤯
Oh, I’m not joking! The Boss himself actually makes a 10 second appearance in this film.
Tumblr media
Look, there he is! Strumming away on his guitar and saying a single line of dialogue! I’d love to know why he was in it. 🤩
#5: There is no #5. I just like the #5, that’s all.
Definitely a film I will come back to in the future. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go and brush up on my music knowledge. Aaaand go and read the book it was adapted from. Apparently everything in the film, except the Chicago setting (The book is actually set in London), is all lifted straight from the book. I’m really looking forward to reading it one day! 😍😍😍

I Just Watched: The Father (2020)
Tumblr media
(Originally posted to Letterboxd on 12th May 2023)
Wow! What. A. Film.
THIS is Anthony Hopkins at his peak. I might have been disturbed by his skin-crawling turn as Hannibal Lecter, but this…! This was even more disturbing! Oh my god! 😳
I was unexpectedly moved to tears by Hopkins’s role as a father (called Anthony, funnily enough!), who was diagnosed with dementia. His depiction of the illness was scarily authentic. In all honesty, it made me feel uncomfortable BECAUSE of how authentically he portrayed it. His behavioural patterns and mannerisms mirrored how a real dementia sufferer would act, and I know this because my granny and my mor-mor (mum’s mum in Danish. My mum’s side of the family is Danish) both struggle with dementia. A lot of experience meeting dementia patients must’ve helped Hopkins create a realistic portrait for him to take with him. Let’s just say he stole that portrait and ran with it and didn’t stop running until the very end. That’s astonishing given he’s now 85 years old! What a legend!
Acclaimed French playwright Florian Zeller wrote and directed this film. Not only that, it was adapted from his own play La Père back in 2012. I had an inkling it was based on a play as the cinematography certainly reflected that. Through his use of symmetry and a mixture of soft and harsh lighting and minimal locations, Zeller presented his story like a live theatre show. His experience as a theatre director must’ve helped massively when planning out his little passion project.
Choosing actors who’ve had experience with performing in theatre was the right call to make. Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman are absolute naturals at the craft and performed well beyond what they were used to in front of a camera. It’s an entirely different experience for them yet very familiar at the same time. They, of course, stole the show. Apparently, Zeller already had Hopkins in mind when writing the play and wanted him in his film for years. Now, it’s finally happened. It’s a match made in heaven! 🥰🥰🥰
Usually, it can be very risky adapting films based on plays; they tend to take away elements of what makes a play stand out, in a way that almost makes it unadaptable. Watching a live show provides a unique experience compared to watching it onscreen as it makes you feel more involved somewhat, like you’re there, living and breathing in that moment. Here, it works simply because of the way it was shot and acted. I felt like I was there with these characters, feeling the same emotions as they are feeling. It’s scary and I love it.
I loved everything about this film: the acting, the cinematography, and…this will be a very weird thing to comment on…but I loved the pacing. It’s on the slow side, but I didn’t mind. I was too engaged to even notice. I liked the unique way dementia was presented in the film. It’s something no one wants to live through in any stage of their lives. It is left, right, and centre, the most brutal and heartbreaking depiction of dementia I have ever seen put into a film. It’s startlingly accurate to the real thing.
Everyone involved in this deserves every single award given to them, especially to Florian Zeller who created this masterpiece in the first place. Impressive given it’s his directorial debut!
10/10! ❤️
