[long deep exhale]
finally!!! i did it. i completed it. i feel like every time i finish an art piece i say that but i rly do feel it with this.
this is inspired HEAVILY by Pieta by William Adolphe Bouguereau, featuring azura, daedric prince of dawn and dusk, cradling the body indoril nerevar after his murder.
man what is it with shezzarines and dying horribly? (he is a shezzarine. to me.) history once again repeats itself: azura holds the body of someone she loves, heart stolen from him and body used. only this time it was her champion instead of her brother
i wanted to do an art nouveau spin on it rather than just recreating a classical painting in my style like i did with my fallen angel picture. and i love art nouveau but dont use the elements nearly as much as i should (its hard okay) but i'm really happy with how this came out!!
also scarabs included :) maybe they're a lorkhan reference. maybe it's house dagoth. maybe its just house redoran. maybe its all of them. you get to decide.

YES please pretty please talk about your historical life series au
So, the setting is roughly late 1900s to early 1910s. Pre-war era England. London to be specific, though I am looking for a specific year to set this in (partly for the sake of character design)
The au contains all members of the life series, but some don't have set roles yet and I'm open to input on those, as well as ideas for characters who already have roles
The central characters are Joel and Scar (and to an extent, Grian), though the story is more from Joel's perspective overall.
Joel is an artist, as a reference to his empires s1. He was raised by his aunt and uncle in Yorkshire, along with his cousin but moved to London at a young age to pursue his career in art.
Scar is an American nouveau riche car manufacturer (a reference to hermitcraft S8) who recently moved to England and is a new patron of Joel's art.
Ren is Scar's old money neighbour who has a suspiciously familiar manservant. Spoiler but Ren is also the legitimate brother of Joel.
Martyn was the second son of an Earl and highly respected officer in the British army, however he died recently. Another spoiler, he faked his death and is disguised as Ren's manservant.
Grian is another neighbour of Scar's, though his family's wealth goes back much less far. Grian grew up with Martyn and Ren but has a deep hatred for the two of them and is determined to find something to ruin their reputation, such as an illegitimate sibling or the truth about a suspicious death.
Gem is an officer in the British army who replaced Martyn after his death. She has been disguised as a man since joining the army and is widely disrespected due to her age, despite how strict she is with the troops, rivalling many other officers.
Etho is an older army officer and the only person who knows Gem's status as he was the one who helped her make her way into the army.
Cleo is Martyns so called widow, making her a dowager. Don't ask why there was so much alcohol at her husbands funeral, a woman may cope however she pleases.
Scott is Cleo's new fiancé after the death of Martyn. He is a bankrupt noble due to a series of bad investments at the hand of his older brother and has agreed to marrying a wealthy dowager (Cleo)
Lizzie is Joel's ex-fiance who went missing a few years ago. Yet another spoiler, she got heavily involved in the suffragette movement (theyre the violent ones, the suffragists were the more peaceful ones) and is on the run from the law and under Cleos protection.
The two with less fleshed out roles at the moment are Jimmy, Joel's cousin he was raised with in Yorkshire, and Mumbo, a mechanic who works for Scar, so they need to be further developed
Then there's Pearl, Impulse, Bdubs, Skizz, BigB are Tango who I honestly have no clue where to fit them in here so please give me ideas 🥺👉👈 i literally love using that sequence of emojis its so silly
Places I took inspiration from for this are: A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder (Musical), The Unexpected Heiress (Visual Novel) and The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue (Book Series)
The last one is set in a completely different time period (1700s), however I took inspiration from it's mystery aspects (this also only applies to the first two books in the series) (it also has no relation to GGLAM, ignore their similar names, and the fact both have main characters who go by Monty)
(By the way, don't expect perfect historical accuracy, this is not the time period I've studied the most extensively. The one I have studied is not really suitable for Minecraft fanfiction, however I am still a history lover.)

Whats Xanthus' opinion about different art movements? art nouveau, modern art and so on...
I think there would be some artistic movements he'd care for more than others.
He would be fascinated by any Medieval art; seeing as it's well before his time, digging into minds that no longer exist can only be done through what they left behind. Because of that, he would also have a deep respect for Gothic architecture.
With the Renaissance era, I think he would appreciate this particular movement due to its importance but would bear no real love for it. Xanthus would be drawn more towards Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism for its artistic meaning and what it can evoke for different people.
And with Art Nouveau, he would likely have pieces in his home. As it expanded to more than artwork, I think some architecture or furniture would be heavily inspired by this movement.
In terms of Contemporary Art, I believe he's simply along for the ride due to the dramatic shift in how smaller movements can be made, and the ability to be educated and expand on styles from history.

Hi, I thought I was following you months ago but apparently not? What is wrong with me?
Lol, that's not the question. No, my REAL question is more generally -- How did you develop your art style? Are there any artists or movements who especially influenced you?
And tied to that, is there anything about your art in particular that you want other people to especially admire?
Tumblr media
Hello! And no worries; I'm simply just here.
I've been doodling since I was a toddler! Hence, a lot about my art style just comes to me as I go. I pick up a few tips here and there, and I honestly can't remember where I got many of these tips from because of how closely they integrated with my process.
Here's a couple of what I think is my most important cornerstones:
Copying my sister's art, which was heavily inspired by 90s anime
Getting told I shouldn't be copying if I was so creative
Getting shading tips from an older kid
Influences of art nouveau, steampunk, and lolita fashion during my teenage years
Art school and Gaia Online providing info on colors, composition, and proportions
Getting told I am allowed to copy because mimicry is part of the natural process for learning and also humans invent things by copying from nature all the time
Grayscale/desaturate everything during the final rendering stage
Studying and using references for drawing stuff I do not know how to draw
As I ponder on your next question, I realize that this is maybe why it's challenging for me to advertise myself. I honestly don't have anything in particular about my art style that I want people to admire. I just want to make people happy to see my stuff. Celebrating the joy of making art, you know?

The 1920s - part 2
The Look
Typical underwear of the 1920s
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This advertisement for the new freedom corset helped women to achieve the flat shapes and less figure hugging look required to make the fashions of the 1920s look good on the every day woman.
The new stylish look of the 1920s
The Eaton crop was a revolution in hair styles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feathered headbands and turbans were the look of the era, they were often the image associated with the La Garconne / flapper look in which was inspired by the art nouveau style left over from the 1910′s and by the mid 1920′s. If you chose to wear one, you pushed it well back and lost the feathers. Sequined caps were also a big thing and heavily ornamented were also popular. Hat Fashion went side by side with hair styles. The big decision facing many women was to Bob or not to Bob, to Crop or not to Crop, or just play safe go with the Fingerwave style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Menswear
The Prince of Wales was the ambassador for British fashion and fabrics across the world.
In 1922, Fair Isle knits were made fashionable by the Prince of Wales when he wore one on the golf course at St Andrews.
The Prince’s support of the Fair Isle sweater probably helped to save the knitting industry that remains to this day on the small Scottish island.
Tumblr media
During 1925 the men wore ‘bum freezer’ length jackets. Here we see gentlemen at the races in the new relaxed jackets.
Tumblr media
Sporting wear in England consisted of white flannel trousers and blazers. This was a very relaxed and elegant look.
Tumblr media
The 1920s passion for dressing soft extended to fabrics as well as to patterns and colours, tweed was extremely popular. Often in gaudy checks and bright stripes.
1925 marks the year that Oxford bags were born, they replaced the slim trousers worn by most young men. For the next 30 years, loose fitting trousers would remain the fashionable fit. The image below shows the comfortable functional aspects of the original 28 inch grow to 40 inch.
Tumblr media
Day wear may have become more relaxed but when it came to evening wear men where still expected to wear black tie and tails. Below we see a typical evening scene with men dressed in black dickie-bows and evening suits. This was a universal style adopted by all men which we still see today.
Tumblr media
Rudolph Valentino was the heart throb of the silent movies and influenced the hairstyle shown below of American and English men. The look was achieved by soaking the hair and wrapping the head in linen bandages until it dried.
Tumblr media
Men’s shoes came in a variety of styles and patterns – perfect for ‘cutting a rug’ in the roaring twenties (1925)

What would you wear to a ball at Lost Hope?
Ohhh boy this is a very exciting ask, thank you!
I thought about this a lot and it was tricky narrowing down which time period to draw inspiration from, especially with the temptation to take it from after the point at which Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is set. My first thought was a turn of the century tea gown, since they have those fantastic renaissance and medieval inspired details, and that art nouveau influence fits really well with the fantasy look:
Tumblr media
Liberty tea gown ca. 1897
I also considered an outfit that would take heavy inspiration from the costume Johnny Flynn wore as Viola in the Globe's all-male production of Twelfth Night, but with a single pearl earring:
Tumblr media
Viola (right). This production is great, I recommend watching the recording if you can!
But this early 17th century outfit finally led me on to Restoration-era gowns. They're not to everybody's taste, but personally I find the shape of their bodices and necklines very flattering. Many of the Lost Hope costumes draw inspiration from nature (such as the Gentleman's oak leaf coat or Arabella's gorgeous wheat-ear tiara), and I love the sea and wanted to incorporate that into a costume. There are a number of portraits of ladies wearing steely blue-grey silk or velvet that perfectly evoke the colour of the sea in different seasons in my part of the world (the west country, UK; none of the turquoise of hotter climates here!). Stiff, crisp silk also makes a lovely whispering noise when you walk, not unlike the sound of distant waves over shingle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many of these gowns let the lustrous fabric take centre-stage and are fairly plain, but I really liked the look of the embroidered or decorated stomachers some of them have:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pearls, swags of fabric, lace, and flowers adorn these bodices. I particularly like how the lady on the right has a matching floral arrangement in her hair.
My own bodice was inspired by the linen sailor collar I embroidered last year, with seaweed-esque vermicelli and oysters holding pearls.
Tumblr media
My collar, still not finished...
Tumblr media
'Rockpool', textile art by Marian Jazmik
A mixture of pearls, shells, and heavily textured embroidery in blues, greens and silver on my bodice and in my hair would mimic the textures and colours of rocks at low tide. At my cuffs and neckline would be quantities of frothy lace, evoking sea foam, and finally, since it wouldn't be Lost Hope without a little magic, the silk of my gown would sometimes appear to swirl just as the surface of the sea is ruffled by the wind, little wavelets moving over it before becoming calm and smooth again.
Thank you so much for this ask, I really enjoyed it! If anyone else reading this post is a fan of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, or just likes the idea of a fantasy ball, I'd love to hear about your ideal costumes!

Welcome to No. 28 Leicester Square, otherwise known as the home of the Good Doctor Jekyll himself.
About this Drawing:
- This design is heavily inspired by the historic home of Dr. John Hunter (who is said to be a major influence on Stevenson’s work)
- The front elevation is a combination of the historic No. 28 Leicester Sq. and the modern building at the same site which features art nouveau ornaments
- Jekyll’s own tastes being more romantic, the inside of the home is decorated in rich colors and rococo elements
More to come!

i have a methodology for morrowind clothes which is. my biggest influences on it are 1. ottoman empire 2. eastern europe (esp for ppl like the ashlanders) and 3. china, particularly the tang dynasty.
there are other influences too like w house hlaalu who is very imperial and i also like to mix in art nouveau influences with chimer clothes (art nouvaeu clothing was heavily inspired by things like the loose garments of ancient greece/rome along with some east asian influences along with light flowing fabrics and silks that remind me of the summerset isles) but i like the blend i have come up with

Hello! Welcome to OCTAfan's sideblog for a little story/ worldbuilding project of mine; Solarclock Lepigriffs and Moonmoth Clockworks!
What is Solarclock Lepigriffs and Moonmoth Clockworks?
Solarclock Lepigriffs is a fantasy worldbuilding project that's basically a heavily solarpunk and clockwork inspired world where moth/ bird like creatures called Lepigriffs are the sapient beings. It'll have a lot of stained glass, art deco and nouveau and plants, but also slight biopunk and microbiology/ virology motifs.
Moonmoth Clockworks is a potential short story (?) set in this world where we follow Sula, an anxious and somewhat introverted lepigriff artist, as well as Ashworth, her partner, as they both get into silly daily shenanigans.
Can we make stuff based in this setting?
Sure thing! Just make sure to credit me... in fact, if you made any fanart or even fan character, please tag me so I can see them!
Where can we follow you besides here?
I run several other blogs! My main being @octahedral-chaos.
I also have a YouTube channel, and a spacehey... although that's pretty dead (Maybe I'll revive it into a Solarclock Lepigriffs-themed blog where I post stuff relating to it, as well as other fun stuff?
Anyways, I hope you enjoy your visit here, don't forget to ask questions and stuff! Have fun!
Oh! And tag list under the cut:
OCTAfan says stuff - General tag for whenever I talk about stuff
OCTAfan's art - Art tag
OCTAfan's writing - Writing tag
OCTAfan answers - For asks/ inbox stuff
Lepigriff aesthetics - Aesthetic for the general world of Solarclock Lepigriffs

Day 4 of our Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Featured Author Interviews, continuing with Jinx!
Jinx author of Elsinore: After Hamlet
Once upon a time, a prince avenged his father’s death. If only he could have foreseen his own.
The year is 2021—or maybe 1602? Hamlet the Younger has just tragically died and Fortinbras the Younger, King of Norway and newly-conquered Denmark, has a lot of cleaning up to do. Elsinore: After Hamlet is a text-based interactive fiction exploration of William Shakespeare's Hamlet as a plague text and a reckoning of Asian American identity during these trying times. Also contains bad puns and glowing text.
Read more about Elsinore: After Hamlet here.
Play the Game Here.
Tags: Fantasy.
Jinx is also the author of The Harrowed and the Hushed and Rougi.
[INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT UNDER THE CUT!]
Q1. Hello! Could you tell us a little bit about to yourself and your project?
Hi! I’m Jinx (she/her), longtime listener and first time caller, writer, and lover of the cute and the gothic.
I’ve always loved writing and first got into interactive fiction during the first lockdowns in 2020. I fell in love with the medium and it’s been such a wonderful adventure since. My first project, Elsinore: After Hamlet, deals with a lot of the frustration and uncertainty I felt during that time as an Asian American with the rug pulled from under all of us. I’m currently working on The Harrowed and the Hushed, a low fantasy murder mystery set in Victorian London, and Rougi, a social intrigue mystery about a cursed ballet in Belle Époque Paris. I really enjoy working with illusions, intrigue, and how we can find ourselves in the strange and monstrous.
Q2. What inspired your current project?
My current projects, The Harrowed and the Hushed and Rougi, are rooted in my undying love of the late 19th century and gothic literature – I love me a good dramatic mystery too, which I’m sure comes as a surprise to absolutely no one. H&H draws a lot from the genre of sensation fiction, which aims to elicit physical reactions in its readers with sensationalized, page-turner plots. The genre traditionally deals very heavily with metaphors of social and identity anxieties, which also made it a very natural source of inspiration for me since those are themes that I really love exploring with my writing. H&H is essentially a love letter to a lot of things I adore, garnished with references to Gothic, Romantic, and Decadent literature, plus my own cultural spin on things. (If you were wondering if some of my characters were named in homage…the answer is probably yes.)
Rougi, which was my entry to interact-if’s January game jam, really came from me looking at color theory and running with it. Based on the “red herring” theme, I knew I wanted to do something with a very strong aesthetic component, so I went back to my bunhead roots and turned it up to the max. I love ballet and as a former dancer, I felt like drama backstage and onstage was the perfect backdrop for a mix of possibly supernatural, definitely interpersonal intrigue. Also, Art Nouveau is so gorgeous and I wanted to write about pretty things (possibly with ugly insides wink-wonk).
Elsinore: After Hamlet is my very first IF project and a real testament to the tangled state of mind I experienced for the bulk of 2021. That spring was so chaotic – lots of sleepless nights and worries gnawing at me from the inside out. E:AH originally started as a final project for a class on medicine and literature, and very quickly became a surprisingly intimate way for me to create some kind of catharsis while the world seemed to fall apart. (Shoutout to the professor who was very chill with me submitting literal plague doctor memes for class discussion, she made Zoom U much better.) I am a self-professed Shakespeare nerd, and looking at one of my favorite plays through a very personal, emotional lens was such an intense experience. I didn’t expect that the development process would break me out of the apathy I’d fallen into at all, let alone so fiercely, but it was a welcome change from feeling scared and dissociated almost constantly.
Q3. Do you pull from your own identity for inspiration? How has that been reflected in your work?
My identity definitely influences how I approach narratives. E:AH was a direct product of the stress I felt juggling my responsibilities as a student, pressure from the pandemic, and my fears as an Asian American woman in a space that became incredibly hostile and unstable. It’s really a slice of how I was experiencing life at the time, and I hope that resonates with players and gets them thinking. For Asian players, I hope that E:AH is a cathartic experience; for non-Asian players, I hope that it shares a different, impactful perspective.
As a kid, I really fixated on the few instances of Asian representation I found in media, so as a creator now, it’s incredibly empowering to be able to include characters who reflect my own experiences and hopefully connect with my audience too. Decentralizing whiteness, particularly in traditionally eurocentric narratives, is very hard-baked into what I create. On a lighter note, food as a love language is also a big cultural influence on my writing and that definitely shows, haha. I’m a huge foodie IRL as well, so coupled with my synesthesia, my writing definitely falls heavily on the sensory side.
Q4. What are you most excited about your project?
E:AH is deeply personal and combines two of my greatest passions (Shakespeare and ~ being melodramatic ~), so while it’s a little scary to have something so near and dear to me out on the internet, I’m absolutely blown away by the response it’s received so far. I’m super excited to see how the playing experience changes (for me personally and in general) over time – I can already foresee it becoming a little like a diary entry preserved online.
As for the two projects I’m currently working on, I am so excited to see how players react to the twists and turns I’m writing into Rougi. I was a little overambitious when planning it out for the January game jam I crafted it for, so I can’t wait to flesh it out fully. Rougi is also my first project written in Sugarcube, so the transition has definitely been a learning journey and I’m excited to show off what I’ve learned.
With The Harrowed and the Hushed, I think I’m most excited about sharing all the lore I’ve built up. Fantasy is the first genre I fell in love with, so getting to create and share my own magical vision is really, really cool.
Q5. What has your experience writing an IF and with the IF community been like?
My introduction to IF came during a lot of turmoil, and the community has been so friendly and supportive. It’s been a blast diving into all these amazing projects and meeting lots of wonderful people! Learning to code has been fun frustrating a very unique and rewarding journey, and it’s seriously such a fantastic feeling to see all the pieces – drafting, Twine-wrangling, writing, UI building – fit together to make a final product. I’m so thankful that my experience with the community so far has led me to make very dear friends and interact with kind and thoughtful readers.
Q7. What piece of advice would you give to fellow creators?
*Shia Laboeuf voice* JUST DO IT. No, but seriously: your story is uniquely yours and there is no one better to tell it. Storytelling is such an intrinsic part of human history and I think it’s one of the most beautiful records of our presence and our world. Despite the obstacles and frustration that comes with being a creator, there’s nothing like the satisfaction of fulfilling that scene you’ve been dying to write, or finally nailing the code you’ve been struggling with. Take care of yourself, and always remember the excitement and passion that led you to where you are now. I’m rooting for you!
That, and don’t code or debug when you’re sleepy. The bug will still be there (unfortunately) after you sleep, and you run far less risk of falling asleep at your computer and waking up to several pages of random characters in the middle of your stylesheet or having to hunt down every time you misspelled a variable…I may or may not be speaking from personal experience.

Nope.
2. when was the last time you cried?
I think while watching Conversations with Friends, not too long ago. I was crying like a river lol.
3. do you have kids?
I don't even have a partner, so yeah, that's pretty much out of my plans for now haha.
4. do you use sarcasm a lot?
Not really. Only with the people I trust.
5. what sports do you play/have you played?
A little bit of soccer when I was a kid. I've never been an athletic person.
6. what’s the first thing you notice about other people?
Their gestures, the way they express themselves. Can say a lot about their vibes and personalities with that.
7. scary movies or happy endings?
I don't hate scary movies buuut yeah, I'd rather watch something else.
Tumblr media
8. any special talents?
Drawing! I've been on a big hiatus for a few years now, but I spent quite a lot of years studying arts and Illustration. Absolutely loved it. Here's a character I did for my studies back in 2019, which happens to be the one on my pfp here in Tumblr. Some sort of cyborg, heavily inspired by GUNNM (Battle Angel Alita):
Unfortunately the current state of the art industry is kinda brutal. Totally drained all my motivation and inspiration to draw, so for now I just take it as a hobby.
9. where were you born?
Spain! 🇪🇦 Arsa arsa taconeo 💃
10. what are your hobbies?
Play videogames and spend time on the internet in general, watching youtube, that kind of stuff.
11. do you have any pets?
I wish, but nope.
12. how tall are you?
Hmmm somewhere around 1,75m. I'm not tall at all.
13. fave subject in school?
Art History! Always found super interesting all the periods and movements, and I particularly loved the greek art, gothic and art nouveau (chef kiss).
14. dream job?
Probably something related to videogames, concept art, character design, that stuff on the artsy side.
I think pretty much everyone I know here has already done this? If you didn’t, well, consider yourself tagged!
15. eye colour?
Very dark poopy brown.

inspirations for ur art or art style
Inspirations in general: literally just whatever I happen to be into. Currently, it's Tron -- but in the past it's been Naruto, Pokemon, Star Wars, Star Trek, Tolkien, etc. While most ideas just come from prompts or "I think this would be neat," I do also really enjoy drawing art for fanfic. Whether it be for my own or for others, it's always delightful. I love the echo chamber they can create where you just keep inspiring each other to create more.
Inspirations on my art style: What a complex question! I struggle a ton with identifying my own particular style, but I can definitely pinpoint certain artists/art styles that have left an impression.
Back when I was in highschool, I was in AP Studio Art. We had to create a portfolio based around a specific theme, and I chose to do one heavily based on the style Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Particularly, Tamara de Lempicka (Deco) and Alphonse Mucha (nouveau). The symmetry and intricate lineart of Deco especially stuck with me, and I think I just naturally lean towards stuff that reminds me of it (dwarves from Tolkien, and Tron especially).
I also love animation! I grew up with stuff like ATLA, Generator Rex, those sort of cartoons made for kids but with appeal that goes far beyond them. Not to mention anime; I was a preteen and teen during the height of Naruto/Naruto Shippuden. You can't even comprehend the chokehold it had on pretty much everyone at its height (also, on my list of Best Animated Episodes Ever that includes Scars Pt1 and 2, there's the episodes of Shippuden when Shikamaru has to deal with his grief regarding losing Asuma. Not only are they gorgeously animated, but the story behind it is absolutely phenomenal. I'm going on a tangent though, moving on), and I'd be lying if I didn't see echoes of its influence in my own work sometimes. And don't even get me started on animated movies, stuff like Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Treasure Planet, on and on and on I could go.
I also really like graphic novels/webcomics. Saga by Brian K Vaughn and Fiona Staples is a massive one, so are Hellblazer, literally anything by Alan Moore, Unsounded by Ashley Cope, and Ava's Demon by Michelle Fus. There are others, ofc, but I don't wanna be here all night! tl;dr I get art style inspiration from a lot of different things. It can sometimes be frustrating when my taste doesn't match up to my skill level, but each drawing brings me a step closer to find my happy middle ground between all of them.
Almost forgot to add him, but I’ve definitely fallen in love with the style of Robert Valley (the guy who designed Tron Uprising). If I can ever come close to that level of stylish I’ll have made it fr!
