I’m pushing out another one of my long-since-drafted things to the queue bc I’m trying to start keeping the queue active 24/7 and fill more asks but have this in the meantime

I'm really bad at judging what's mild versus severe when it comes to gore/blood bc I tend to underestimate, I think this is kinda severe? Let me know which it is actually pls so I have a better idea for the future ---------------------------------------- I mentioned a while back in the corpse disposal post and murder methods post that Razor can be... Brutal to say the least, but to expand more on the concept I feel like there's a big potential for a sort of gap moe with him, a duality that seems to contradict itself. Because in many ways he's a sweetheart, always trying to find things to make you happy, often smiling with those wide, excited eyes, physically affectionate with nuzzles and the like. But the other side of that, he's not actually aware of how... desensitized he is. You notice it early on and it catches you off guard a bit the first time it happens. Some poor little animal you two see struggling, like a bird stuck in a tree, and you urge him to go get it and he nods and says ok. Grabs it, and just as you're about to thank him and let it go you hear its little bones snap under the crush of his grip with a final pained chirp. There, he got it, see? Now you two can eat it together. That was why you wanted him to grab it right? To kill it? Why else? He looks down and realizes oh, it's still twitching, so he reached a hand up and twists its neck. There, now it's dead, he says with a beaming smile. But it falls and he tilts his head when he sees the shocked look on your face. What's wrong? Why are you so upset? You soon learn a lot of the animals don't... die immediately. The little things the wolves drag back are still kicking and struggling, still making noises as they tear into them to devour. It makes you sick to your stomach when you witness it, tears come to your eyes. He knows you don't like it and warns you, but... he doesn't understand why? Why does it upset you like that? He doesn't get it. It's a gnawing awareness in the back of your mind. You start to pick up on his... lack of reactions to certain things. You were once in the church getting healing for a minor wound of his when another group of adventurers came rushing through the doors, desperately begging for help for their friend they were carrying... some guy seriously injured, gored by a boar. The sight is burned in your mind forever, the organs spilling out of his split gut, the shivering and wide, bloodshot eyes, the blood bubbling out of his mouth with choked horrific groans and the way his body convulsed involuntarily. The most horrid thing you'd ever seen. And you were pretty certain it was that way for everyone. Everyone in the church was gasping, some people were retching and trying to hold back sickness, people ran out of the room as they were unable to handle the scene, tears were in everyone's eyes, and as the man wailed in agony from them setting his dislocated bones, you watched the bystanders cringe and wince. Every person in the vicinity was visibly horrified.... except for one. Razor's face was neutral. Curious. He leaned in closer to get a better look, eyebrows raised. He doesn't flinch at the sight of organs spilling onto the ground and the man starting to convulse and foam at the mouth as his eyes roll back into his head. And then, after a moment, he asks if you're ready to leave, says he feels better now and that man is really loud, he doesn't like it. His voice doesn't even have the slightest hint of a wavering or discomfort. When you come across a man in the woods caught in a bear trap, you can barely stand to look at it. Just hearing the cries for help had you shivering, and the sight of the pooling blood and utter agony on the man's face had you gasping, hand over your mouth as you tried to look away. ...Razor didn't seem to mind, though. He just undoes the trap and, without giving the man any warning, yanks it apart, pulling the spikes from his legs. As he does, blood shoots out and splatters on his face. He doesn't flinch, nor when the man screams. He does finally seem to react to the pained groans the man makes. But... It's not like your reactions. He's not flinching and grimacing, drawing in sharp breaths and tensing up, eyes watering in pity and shock like you. Instead, his eyes narrow and he puts his hands over his ears as you stoop down to help the poor man. His eyebrows furrow. He almost looks... Annoyed. He draws his foot back as if he's about to kick him, but freezes with realization when he looks at you, as if he forgot you were standing there, and puts his foot back down. You're certain he wasn't actually going to do that, of course. You're not sure why he did that, but... He wouldn't do something like that, even in a moment of dissociation from his human awareness. He does volunteer to be the one to go get help, though, getting away fast, but for some reason you sense it was more out of irritation at the noise rather than horror at the whole thing. Perhaps the worst was the decomposing body, that day you took a walk in the woods together. He smelled it first, nose wrinkling up in disgust at the putrid smell. But it was strong enough that you smelled it soon after. He says having dead animals this close to the residence of the pack is not good, they all hate the smell, so he can try to move the carcass of whatever animal it is... but it's not an animal, it turns out, once you finally find the source, collapsed at the bottom of a cliff from where they most likely fell to their death. Well, it's kind of a stretch to say it still resembles a human either, but you can tell from the general shape. It's more just like a glob, putrefied and rotting flesh falling off the bones. It shocks you so much you fall backwards, but he just moves closer. Ugh, too far rotted to move, he can't do anything about it, he realizes as he gives the decaying mass a kick and watches the blackened flesh slide off the bones. Oh well. ...In your shock, it takes you a moment to realize how... unbothered he seems. Mildly annoyed by the smell, but his expression is neutral as he looks at one of the most horrifying sights you've ever seen, he just yawns as he walks away from it and says you two should get away from the smell, it makes his head hurt.

The events all linger in the back of your head. A growing sense of wrongness, a dark, cold dread that settles in your stomach as the occurrences slowly grow in number, one after the other, each time you notice the complete lack of any sign of disturbance on his face, in his voice or body language. You ask him once, one time when you get the courage to ask such a... potentially offensive question. Don't you... feel anything when you see things dying? When they're in pain? He nods. He gets what you mean. The feeling when you watch something die. Hungry, right? Oh, no? Maybe you mean the irritation, a kind of angry feeling, what's the word... impatient...? Because the thing is taking too long to die and he wants it to go ahead and die already. Or maybe you mean like when that man was injured? When something is dying but it's not something you wanna eat? Yeah, he has a feeling then too. Um... kind of like anger... you taught him the word once... annoyed? They make so much noise, and he doesn't like loud things. When that man came into the church... he didn't like how loud it was. Why didn't they just kill him, since he was making so much noise...? He doesn't get it. When things annoy him, he kills them, like loud birds and biting bugs. He kinda had an urge to just... reach out and make the man stop screaming, just twist his neck like he does small animals when they make too much noise. But he's smart, he says, he knows the other people might get mad. Yes, he uses the word "might," not "would," as if it was a mere possibility. So it doesn't really come as a surprise when the same attitude applies to the people at his own mercy, the people that get too close to you and end up dragged out to the woods. It's that same knowing dread in your gut, and while it horrifies you as much as it always has, you wouldn't have expected anything else. Maybe some people would feel bad about what they're doing, they would want to go ahead and get it over with, they couldn't take the begging and agony the other party is in... but not only is he totally unbothered, but if he kills him now, he says, the blood will go all over the ground, and that's bad, his lupical like eating the blood in things. So he just snaps the man's bones, that way he won't run away. It's hard to describe the excruciated noises that come out of the other's throat when he does. It's unlike any noise you've ever heard a human make, that kind of pain. The sweat that pours from the other's skin from the agony, the way his mouth hangs open even when he can't scream anymore, the trembling and muffled begging as he moves to the next limb. You tremble and cry. You shiver uncontrollably, you whimper for him to stop. Your eyes widen when he grabs each limb and you close your eyes and sob and grimace and cringe with the snapping sound. Razor, on the other hand, stays just as neutral as before. Face blank and empty, as if performing any other mundane task. He doesn't flinch at the snapping. His expression is unchanging at the sound of screams and the groans as he drags the still-living figure behind him by his shattered ankle all the way back home. When he finally goes to look back at you, he tilts his head at the look on your face. Why do you still look upset? There's no blood yet... isn't it blood that makes you upset? Maybe not? Maybe it's the sound that bothers you? Yeah, you flinch whenever the man groans in pain, so it must be the sounds of the dying things that you don't like, it annoys him too really. Ok, that can be fixed... sound comes from the throat right? Well, he left his claymore a ways away so, it'll just take a second, the guy is thrashing a bit but eventually he holds him still enough to get his teeth latched around his throat and just... bites down. The sound is a squelching, crunching sound, one that you'll never forget, it makes every hair on your body stand on end and your skin crawl. He pulls back with the mass of bleeding flesh and tracheal tissue in his jaws and spits it out on the ground. There, see...? You can see the blood on his teeth reflecting the light as he smiles. He's not making noises anymore, so... why do you still have that look on your face? Is it because the body on the ground is all... spasming and convulsing like that? Well, uh... that'll stop soon, probably. At least it's nice and quiet now. He gets it, really, he doesn't like loud noises either.

ft. bakugou katsuki. midoriya izuku & todoroki shouto

Note: yes, I missed prime pun opportunity to write ‘the boyz’ in the title. Anyway, I’ll be general enough to not include any real-life names and music, but I’ll get specific about other details. (Besides, if you squint real close you can see where I got my references from.) I’m thinking of a follow-up part, but we’ll see. Hope you enjoy!

* These headcanons are detailing each of the boys as a member in a hypothetical idol group, and not that they’re all in the same group.

** For context: the difference between main and lead positions is that main is the position that gets majority of the activity e.g. song, dance, rap, etc. Lead is more of a supporting role, but still important nonetheless.

BAKUGOU KATSUKI

Obviously an all-rounder. He can sing, dance, and rap, though his forte is definitely dancing.

Bakugou obviously has some mad hand-eye coordination if he can play the drums, and I haven’t even brought in his utilizing it through his quirk and fighting talent. He’s also very flexible when twisting through the air and extremely precise with his explosions

Thus, I’d say that his moves are the most on-beat and precise. He’s got very solid moves when dancing; imagine his limbs cutting the air in sharp, refined movements, and his flexibility leads him to be an overall powerful dancer.

Bakugou is a HUGE stickler for technique. Sure, he’s not above improvisation, but technique’s where he excels the most. He’s looking far ahead enough to not want to jeopardize his health by doing some dangerous moves that could potentially hurt his body, so he always takes extra care when going about them, such as taking advanced dance classes.

He works wonderfully as a center, because not only does he have this charisma that makes people unable to look away from him, his perfected balance between his fierce dancing and his emphasis on technique lead him to be a picture of refined strength, and an absolute delight to watch on stage

His facial expressions are definitely the best when he’s performing powerful songs, probably because he’s naturally angry lol. His worst concept has got to be cute, but while he dreads doing it, it’s not like he can’t pull it off. He’s an idol, dammit.

Bakugou’s that one member who wears a headband or bandanna during cutesy performances and sticks with it, because that’s the closest the stylists are ever gonna get to his hair

God forbid if he ever has curly or straight hair

He’s not against dying it though, but he still cares about the repercussions it has on his body, so he tries to refrain from dying it too often. (Which could be inevitable if his managers require him to, I know that. But I’m going to give the boys a little more leeway here to showcase their personalities.)

Anyway, a bandanna suits him just fine, and now he’s the trademark member with the bandanna haha

Some things that don’t change from canon are obviously his schedule. Boy still wakes up at the crack of dawn, probably goes for runs or do sets in the gym, make himself a healthy breakfast, then get down to work

Now I’m conflicted as to what position he would take in a group; I’m leaning towards main dancer

Then again, he IS an all-rounder, so really you could get him to do anything and he’ll be just fine

It’s not in his nature to fail, after all

He can sing, but since his voice is kind of gravelly he’s not the first choice for a main vocal. Strong lead vocal material, I’ll bet, because his voice adds a lot of color and diversity. It’s not something you’d usually hear in a song, that’s why.

He can rap, but again, his voice is gravelly and hard to hear, so I don’t think it would be too good a fit for fast-paced raps. Though, throw him one or two iconic rap lines in his natural ‘I’ll punch you in the face’ tone and you’ve got yourself an icon (and a meme) for days.

I can also see Bakugou being leader of the group, since in canon he’s actually the oldest in class 1-A. One thing though is his outward persona isn’t all that pristine; he has trouble switching gears into idol mode. As we know Bakugou doesn’t lie, regardless of circumstances, and he’s not about to start doing that just to be liked better. If any of these extras are going to be his fans, they’re going to have to recognize real talent, without all the fake smiles.

But because he knows what it could do to the group’s reputation if he came out to look like a big bad bully, he usually keeps his mouth shut during publicity events

He’s probably one of the first idols to have a not-so-sunny media persona, but fans mostly see him as this brooding, sulky kid that’s prepared to put 100% into everything he does

Which is why they still like him

Suffice to say, his fan-base is very similar to the BNHA fandom lmao

Cue all the memes on him being a jerk and everyone liking him anyway, but they know he’s fully committed to the group and wouldn’t want to do anything to risk its image

But over the years, and with the amount of events he’s been involved in, Bakugou’s learnt to let out his true personality one step at a time

He’s considering things carefully because he doesn’t want his fans to be jarred by his personality change all of a sudden, and also because he’s tired keeping up appearances

Jokes on him because the fans already know how he is and are just waiting for him to be more comfortable around the group to showcase his true feelings

And you know what? It sells!

His members also see him as some inspirational figure because his determination and commitment is truly unparalleled

And while he isn’t the easiest to get along with, they know that he’ll do anything within his abilities to push the group to greater heights

While that’s cute and all, it also means they have to suffer at the hands of Bakugou’s tough love. Tough luck

Besides being leader, I could also see him having a hand in producing as well

Remember when I said he was a stickler for technicality? Well, yeah, exactly this

If he feels something isn’t up to par he’d rather do it himself. I think he’d dabble in mixing for a bit and realize he actually has an ear for it, to which he’d then go on to producing whole songs that just awe his members and they’d be like ‘yeah let’s go with this’

And one more thing. Bakugou’s actually got an eye for fashion

Yeah, gripe all you want because all this boy ever wears in the dorms is skull shirts and black tanks but seriously, when he gets down to it, he knows what looks perfect on each member and can make little adjustments to change up a whole style

Overall Bakugou is nothing if not capable. While it means he could definitely go solo at some point, he’s formed bonds with his members and knows he’s grown as a person as a result. And at this point he can only get better

In a leader position, he’s got the charisma, and is not afraid to push for changes if he thinks the status quo isn’t doing enough to ensure the members’ well-being

His weaknesses are obviously teamwork and perfectionism, but he’s been learning how to get along with others better, that it’s not all just a rat race for fame and influence, and he’s able to form some pretty lasting relationships (see: Kirishima)

Not perfectionism, though. He sees it as a strength and not for one second will he compromise. He wants nothing but the best quality, not just for himself, but for the fans

MIDORIYA IZUKU

Looks like the maknae but isn’t. That’s it, that’s the post

He has a really sweet voice so I can see him going for vocals. So imagine when he turns around, holds a mic in his hand and starts RAPPING

You got it, he’s a rapper. Look at the speed that kid goes when he’s mumbling and muttering to himself all the time

Cue Deku’s origin story where he’s mumbling to himself on the street and a talent scout hands him his business card asbfajgfsa

His enunciation is also clear, and his sweet voice makes for a very refreshing rap. That and he also writes his own rap, because if he’s going to be saying anything on that stage, he’s going to want it to mean something.

His raps are always soulful, with hard-hitting lyrics that serve to encourage and motivate anyone who hears and vibes with them.

Basically, his gap moe game is STRONG. Dude be spitting fire up there on stage but once he’s come down, he’s a timid, sweet, shy boi, with overreactions and exaggerations that just make him all the more endearing

He’s also a big fan favorite because he nails every concept well, and has a very down-to-earth personality which he doesn’t hide from the cameras

You want him to act cute and youthful? You’ve got it. You want him to go for something sexy? Um yeah, he’ll have his reservations, but he’ll still do well. You want him to be angry and powerful? The strength in his gaze has got you trembling from the pit.

He’s not just a fan favorite but also that of the staff. Seriously Deku deserves all the love in the world and in this world, he’s going to get it

He’s in the position for main rapper, but I could see him going for lead vocals as well. He’s got a sweet, clear voice that immediately tugs on anyone’s heartstrings the moment they hear it, and he’s usually given more lines in ballads. His vocal range isn’t bad, he can reach moderately high notes, but sometimes his voice undergoes strain. He’s training for that, though!

As for his dance style, Deku probably goes for freestyle! He’s got this easy-going, totally relaxed style going for him that’s full of swag (omg outdated word alert) that makes his movements very smooth. He’s also reasonably flexible, though not as flexible as Bakugou or Todoroki, so he still can pull off certain dance moves.

Unpopular opinion, but it’s Deku, not Todoroki, who looks good in EVERYTHING. Literally his stylist is squealing backstage because they can go ham on dressing him. You could put him in a gold chain and ripped jeans OR an oversized hoodie and rompers, and it’d just go. The only thing is his hair though; he’s thinking of selling it as his charm point (not his freckles!) so he’d prefer if it could stay green. He doesn’t mind if they style it different ways though

The fans would go ballistic if they saw Deku with an undercut, and chances are they’re going to get to see it

He’s definitely one for improvisation! He’s very flexible with these changes, much like how he considers his growth in canon. He’s always looking to try out new styles or moves and see if it fits for him

Besides, I also see him producing! It’s because he’s so immersed in his idol career that he’s always studying new trends on the scene and making them into formulas for the group. He’s also thinking of marketing strategies in his free time

Everyone better be afraid of businessman Deku because he’ll be stealing those bucks from right under your nose

He’s also got mean leadership skills, but I don’t see him in a leader position

Rather, he’s like the second-eldest-but-co-leader kind of guy! He assists the leader in any way he can, and always serves to inspire and motivate the younger ones to work harder together as a team

Deku’s still got that shounen-protagonist charm, even in this world

But for all his good points, Deku still worries he isn’t enough

He knows how cut-throat the industry can be, having studied it inside and out, and he doesn’t want to lag behind

Cue him getting up at odd hours of the morning to use the practice studio (without waking up the others, of course) and other instances

Whenever his members realize he’s been overworking, literally everyone turns on him

He used to be the mom figure, but the moment he’s ushered into bed, a cooling pad on his forehead and thermos at his bedside desk, and the members even station one person to be in the living room so if he tries to leave his room to practice by himself they’ll see him

Jokes on them because Deku practices in his room

He practically moves in his sleep as if trying to get the muscle memory down

Precious boy must protecc!

In sum, Deku’s a great teammate to have and a valuable asset to the team

He’s also the best of friends and is never one to let a fellow member down

Probably the first to burst into tears if the group ever disbands

With his talent and fan-base, he could definitely go solo. But more than that, he wants to cherish the time he has with his members and achieve greater milestones with them every day

TODOROKI SHOUTO

High-key a visual. I mean, everyone wants to look like him!

Like. Everyone stops to look at him whenever he enters the room. Staff, producers, backstage crew, everyone. Even his members, sometimes.

Man’s just too pretty not to stare at

That's not to say he isn't talented, oh no. He's much like Bakugou, an all-rounder, but he's gone through rigorous training from when he was young to get there

Definitely not because of genes, no offense to Rei

As much as Enji is a major shareholder in the industry, anyone who sees Todoroki strut his stuff and still says he got in because of his father has got to be blind. Or deaf. Or plain stupid.

Sure, he had all that training courtesy of his dad. But the moment he enters as a trainee, it's all him from there and no one else.

He's a lot withdrawn at first, still is, but he's improved a lot from when he first joined. It's because of the support he's gained from both his members and fans that he's able to push himself to be the best version of himself everyday

He definitely doesn't come out and say it, but he's probably the most grateful for his fans. As in his family isn't the only lifeline left for him anymore

Todoroki has an amazing voice; while his speaking voice is low, he can reach higher notes without much difficulty. His tone is deep, somber and perfect for ballads, but the training he's undergone has made his technique immaculate. He's got excellent control, he can do runs and riffs effortlessly and he's even perfected his growl. Fans won't even see it coming

His dancing on the other hand is a lot about technique; but unlike Bakugou, Todoroki probably did classical and contemporary dance training as opposed to hip-hop or popping. Because of that, his movements are smooth and elegant, and he always carries himself with the grace of a dancer

That's not to say he cannot be an absolute beast on stage, of course. He's just more in his element when it comes to melancholic ballads, and he's had a hand in choreographing contemporary routines before

That experience and knowledge easily make him a capable choreographer for the group

After all those years of not being able to properly express himself, Todoroki learnt to let his dance tell a story in itself

He's also a fast learner, so any hip-hop techniques he easily picks up and incorporates into the routine

This makes me think he’s going to be a main dancer and a lead vocal, maybe even main vocal

I don’t see him in a leader position because while he has the charisma for it, I think he’d lack in communication, like Bakugou. They’re both a bit too used to doing things on their own that they 1) can’t trust anyone else to do it right and 2) as a result have never consulted other people about how they do things

The difference is Bakugou is a little more observant and far-thinking enough to be a leader, but it doesn’t make Todoroki any less important

If anything, he’s the mom friend, and always makes sure that the members stay in line and out of trouble

Also, for some reason, he's got exceptional charisma on stage and he doesn't even know it

Like, a sexy song comes on and then there’s Todoroki's smoldering heterochromatic gaze

Fans: omgomgomg how is he so hot what the—

Him: ??? This is my normal face tho

It's a strange feeling. One moment, he can be humping the floor and another moment he's got dimples in his cheeks from smiling. It makes him look like a totally different person, even though he's the same guy

His fans don't know why either

As much as he has a creative outlet in dance, Todoroki thinks he has no talent for songwriting or producing. He doesn't consider them his areas of expertise and if he was asked to write lyrics he'd have a hard time because he rarely expresses himself with words. He'd fret on it and eventually not get much done, so why try?

He does help out though, in offering suggestions on how to proceed, but he won't take the lead for any of these. Only dancing

That and his growing up with a businessman father leads him to also know the industry rather well, so he can offer some insights as to what image they could go for and how to market their discography

When it comes to styling, Todoroki is an absolute Mess. The things he likes and wants to wear doesn't suit him all that much, and the stylists usually have a hard time picking out clothes that really accentuate his look and figure. The myriad of colors in his hair and face lead to color clashes, but they find that red and blue are usually the go-to colors.

Did I mention that Todoroki doesn't mind dying his hair as long as they don't dye the white part? Enough said

They've done rainbow on him before!

He also doesn't cover up his scar, and over the years he's learnt to make it his charm point

It serves to make him a noticeable figure in the industry (as if his heterochromia weren’t enough) but it also makes him easily recognisable to fans

It’s not like he doesn’t like interacting with his fans, but sometimes some of them get a little too close, or ask questions that are way too personal

During those times, he’s at least got his members to relate and support him through it

The cutest thing about this man has got to be when he interacts with fans

Like, he’s pretty expressionless most of the time, but he always makes sure that his fans know that he’s extremely happy to have them here, and that he’ll continue doing the best he can for them

If you’re lucky and catch a small smile from him when you’re at a fan sign, I guess you could die peacefully

To summarize, Todoroki is a sweet bean but hardly ever shows it

When people praise his looks, he’s humble about them (though it’s more because he doesn’t know or think he’s attractive… baby just doesn’t see it)

And to top it all off, he’s a charmer on and off stage with his quiet, sensitive nature and calm demeanor

He’s also the one that’s most likely to have a modeling career outside of his idol work

He can’t act for the life of him even though he’s got the expressions right on stage

Like Deku and Bakugou, he could always go solo, but his reason for not doing so is mainly because he’s found a new family, here with his members, and he doesn’t want to lose it

He doesn’t even mind if they don’t produce music anymore. As long as everyone sticks together and has a good time, he’s willing

here is a post of Why I Like Nanamaru Sanbatsu which may or may not also be a Reasons Why You Should Watch Nanamaru Sanbatsu but it’s not made with the intent of persuasion and more of me just gushing over things because this isn’t spoiler friendly

1) Niche Sport

I’m not a stranger to “Sport but it doesn’t involve Ball or Sweat”. That’s a lie, the players sweat a lot in Chihayafuru. The fact that Sasaijma (and then another character in the later chapters in the manga) refer to Karuta is a reason enough to pick up the series. Hikaru no Go was one of my earlier sports anime as well. It’s not like I was a fan of Go or Karuta either but the way the characters wholeheartedly loved what they were doing (and competitively), it made me love it as well. The same definitely goes for Quiz Bowl. While the two I listed were something I completely had no clue how the rules go, Quiz Bowl is a bit more obvious so it’s easier to get into.

2) Nerdy Protag in a Sports anime

Actually coming from YowaPeda, Crunchyroll recommended this amongst other things. YowaPeda did the trope a lot better, given that you’d never associate an Otaku with Biking while a Bookworm being associated with Quiz Bowl does not seem unheard of. But the idea of a nerdy protagonist in a competitive sport was still an allure.

And oops, I think Koshiyama is a cutie so there’s a huge bias towards that. The fact that Horie Shun who voices Enta Jinnai from Sarazanmai voices Koshiyama Shiki gave me a laugh and he actually fits his role very well. Further emphasizes his cuteness without Enta’s weird gay crush lol

3) Ishikawa Kaito

I’m not above watching anime for seiyuu reasons alone but I actually went in blind with this series and to my surprise one of my favs was in it. I’d known Kaito mostly for Kageyama Tobio first, but he’s gone through so many other roles that I enjoy (Kaki from Pokemon SM, Iida from BokuHero, Mimura Subaru from 2.43) and I’ve watched a lot of seiyuu events/radios with him so I’m just a big fan of him in general. Dunno if I should have just merged this point with the next but-

4) Mikuriya Chisato

Kaito has The Range and can do whatever role he wants (I’m most impressed by his role as Alan from BNA) but I think I have a weakness for when he’s slightly an asshole. Mikuriya gave off the generic rival trope, which he kind of is. I got some Subaru vibes from him as well. I don’t know if he’s canonically handsome, but yes I think he’s very good looking for an anime character. Plus the fact that he’s The Cool Guy but is participating in such a sport as Quiz Bowl. AND the moe gap that is his feminine sounding first name and the possibility that he might also actually be an otaku is 👌👌👌👌

My friend had tagged something with him as “Chazz Princeton with a haircut” and while Not Entirely, he is the “We are not friends, we are rivals but I interact and help you enough that we are practically friends but i will continue to deny it” and I love that trope. The way he’s so not interested in Gorls or Nonsense reminds me of Manga Manjoume, though nowhere as serious because he is not above nonsense himself.

5) Fukami Mari

The moment she was introduced, I had very low expectations for her. Of course she is the one that drags Koshiyama into the Quiz Bowl world BUT she doesn’t fall into the trope of “Female is very good at The Thing, BUT Newbie Male MC does it better than her almost immediately”. I’m so glad for that because as you go on with the series, she is very much an entire character and not just a female support cast.

She loves Quiz Bowl but she’s not the best or even very good at it. Her childhood friend from another school (which I was 75% betting that it was going to be a male and a potential love interest) turned out to be a female friend. Instead of “cat fight”, they are still very amicable towards each other and support each other but also acknowledge each other as rivals. The fact that Yuki had only started Quiz Bowl because of Mari but liked it enough to continue on by herself, I think that’s really great.

The anime doesn’t get to it, but she confronts her brother about why he quit Quiz Bowl and challenges him. She has her own goals and ambitions and you see her working on it. She also has her strengths and weaknesses and is a vital addition to the Buzou Quiz Team. Fukami Mari is A Good Girl and I won’t tolerate any slander towards her. The way the beginning of the series sexuallizes her via putting her and Koshiyama into generic anime situations is so uncomfortable but I’m glad they move past that later.

Also since their group isn’t technically a Club (?) Mari isn’t just Female Manager. A plus to Quiz Bowl being Co-Ed sport.

6) Quiz Questions

I like trivia. It’s a little harder to guess the questions along with the anime because you’d have to pause all the time and half the time the contestants are going to buzz in early before you hear the entire question. Unfortunately, unless you actually are a fan of random knowledge or a huge nerd, the questions might actually be hard as well. I literally only knew about 3 questions asked in the entire series and its the anime/manga related ones lol. Still, I enjoyed seeing the characters draw their conclusions and to know what each character’s strong and weak points were. (Mikuriya using Math to calculate the Day of the Week from the past was 😚👌)

7) Side Characters

The first one I’m thinking is obviously Sonohara Akira. The moment of his first appearance, I had a hunch that it wasn’t exactly as it looked. He’s a little schemer but he has his own code of ethics, so he’s not all that bad. (Also hes A Gamer, so Relatable.) The fact that he’s related to Sonohara of Asagaoka makes it all the more interesting because they're’ so different. The way everyone reacts to him is so interesting because he doesn’t take it seriously while everyone else does. My favorite interactions with him aside from the Akiba Squad are the ones with Ookura. (I actually prefer to ship them over Niina/Akira lol)

Sasajima, mysterious Quiz Master with a past related to Fukami’s brother, who used to go to the Prestigious Quiz King School. Character wise, he doesn’t seem interesting but I love his idea of what a Quiz Bowl should be. My favorite parts of a series is when they love the thing they do, and that having fun is what is the most important. Of course you have to be fairly good at the thing first to be able to enjoy yourself freely but he never brags and is a supportive senpai.

Jinko. She’s cute. That’s good enough for me lol. I guess her Electronics Thing is also pretty cool. I like seeing the Sasajimas interact.

8) Ship

Okay, well, its obvious where I fall here. I don’t remember the last time I’ve watched such a generic sport series with a one on one protag vs rival. I’m not above shipping the “obvious/main” ship, as SasuNaru and Edgewright are some of my ships. However I didn’t ship Akira/Hikaru and I don’t ship KageHina but I do ship something like Manjoume/Judai and if asked MakoHaru vs RinHaru, I’d pick the latter, so it might just be a matter of tastes and I won’t fall immediately into every “rival” ship.

So why would I ship Mikuriya/Koshiyama? Because I love it when the Cool Guy falls for the Nerd and EXTRA POINTS if the Cool Guy is also secretly a nerd too. When I mean secretly a nerd, I don’t mean Mikuriya being on quiz bowl but that he might be a closet Otaku. (ImaSaka is everything about this trope.)

Anyway, they are the main two rivals in the series, so of course they acknowledge each other. Koshiyama took it so dramatically but in the past, nobody cared about his presence, let alone think that he’s a Threat. Mikuriya is a Hot Shot and thinks he’s better than everyone but this newb with potential beat him one time (unofficially) so he’s automatically curious.

Even though it is Hot Blooded Competition, Mikuriya always seems to encourage and cheer Koshiyama on (in his own rival-y way of course) whenever he feels down about not being strong enough to compete with him. (When they were lining up for the Third round at Asagaoka) Even when Koshiyama lost, after Mikuriya had a huge handicap, Mikuriya tells him he’ll take him on anytime. The fact that he wants to do Quiz Bowl with (against) him, is practically Sports Anime confession. “I won’t wait for you, Git Gud” “Okay I will Git Gud so we can fight again” *Fist Bump* What are you guys doing.

It might just be the art style but there is a copious amount of blushing happening every time the two interact. Also that height difference!! Mikuriya is 172 while Koshiyama is 153, I fucking love it.

Uhhhh that’s about it. I would like to gush more but there’s only a few chapters of the manga that’s been fan translated and it’s not even half of what’s actually out there. (I think the manga is complete by now?) There’s only one anime season of the series, and I doubt there’s going to be more so RIP me.

Digimon Adventure Shipping Masterpost - Part 2

Part 1

Sora x Izzy (Kora)

Pros:They’re both the most level headed of the group and there’s relatively little drama between them. So if you want something sweet and cute that’s stress free, then this could do ya. There’s also the added bonus of breaking up the Tai/Sora/Matt triangle.

Cons: They’re also kind of boring. They don’t play off one another in any interesting way. They’re just generally nice to each other and can work together as a team, and that’s about it. They also rarely interact outside of the group.

Personal Ranking (5/10) Eh..I can see it working and I don’t mind it as a refreshing break from the drama, but there are more interesting ships out there for them.

Sora x Mimi (Mira)

Pros: These two were the only two girls on the team for a long while, so naturally they spent a lot of time together on screen. They’re best friends, and therefore a lesbian’s dream team of a pairing. They got that opposites attract vibe, they’re relatively drama free, and they’re still other girls on the team that they interact with so it’s not like we’re losing the only female friendship on the show if you ship them.

Cons: Mimi is largely absent in 02, so we get less interaction between them than other Adventure characters. Also, while there are other female friendships none are quite as close as these two and so you may prefer them as platonic.

Personal Ranking (6/10) Like with Kora, I can see them working, and I do indeed like Mimi-centric ships a lot, but I kind of prefer them as a friends since for the longest time they were the only female friendship on the show; back when I was first watching.

Sora x Joe (Joura)

Pros: These two spend a lot of time together in Adventure. There’s lot of one on one interaction for them up episodes for them. They work well as a team, while still being different enough to make for an interesting interactions. Also if you have the love triangle, Joe and Sora are seen suspiciously close together during the epilogue.

Cons: Sora is in a canon ship already, if that matters to you. Plus Joe may not be your favorite, as he’s pretty decisive. Then there’s the fact that he and Sora do bump heads more so than Sora does with anyone else. It’s like a tei between Tai and Joe over who can annoy Sora the most in season one.

Personal Ranking (7/10) This is my second favorite ship for Sora, but that’s probably because I just really like Joe a lot.

Sora x T.K. (Sokeru)

Pros: This ship is oddly popular in certain sections of the fandom. I’m guessing for the same reasons why Yamakari is liked. Sora is very protective of TK in season one. While their interactions do taper off after that point, they’re still seen hanging out together in 02 and Tri, at times.

Cons: Once again their interactions are limited to mostly group settingings. They also have the same age gap as all of the 02/Adventure pairings. Given how most of their moments are in season one where that age gap makes the most difference, there’s little to go on post Adventure.

Personal Ranking (4/10) Yeah, not enough interaction to sell this one for me.

Sora x Kari (Sokari)

Pros: More femslash options. They’re mostly drama free and are very similar in terms of personality. Also, when placed together they cancel out each other’s respective love triangles.

Cons: All of the same cons as Sokeru. Also they are very similar personality wise and so their dynamic may bore you.

Personal Ranking (3/10) Yeah, count me as one who finds them boring. Add in the age gap and lack of interaction and this ship is a no go for me.

Sora x Davis (Daiora)

Pros: It’s basically Taiora but without the triangle bullshit. Also Davis is very good for unrequited romance pairings.

Cons: Even less interaction than Sokeru or Sokari. The age gap is still present even though it doesn’t matter as much in 02.

Personal Ranking (5/10) I do really like Davis, and fanworks have shown that they make a cute pairing. But only as like a one sided crush thing, so their dynamic is limited.

Sora x Yolei (Soyako)

Pros: Much like with Taisuke and Yamasuke, Sora is in that mentor to friend role for Yolei, but with slightly less of an age gap. Also more femslash options, which are indeed rarer than the slash ones, just cause there are less girls than boys in this show, sadly.

Cons: They’re kind of Mimra light as yolie is very similar to Mimi in terms of personality. Also while they get some moments in 02, that ends as soon as we get to other seasons.

Personal Ranking (4/10) Meh...I’d rather just go with Mimra.

Sora x Cody (Sori)

Pros:On the one hand they so rarely interact that you can shape their relationship post Tri into being whatever you want it to be.

Cons: On the other hand they aren't ever seen together outside of the group and it’s only in 02 where their age difference would most matter.

Personal Ranking (2/10) I guess there’s a certain freedom in being able to take a relationship in any direction you want to without it being pure crack or non-canon. I just don't know why you would want to when there’s so many other options out there.

Sora x Ken (Kenora)

Pros: Uh... They both wind up in ridiculous careers that aren’t suited to them? They’re both shoved into canon relationships without proper build up for them? Wanna cause drama for drama sake with a cheating route?

Cons: Are these two even friends? Out of all of the 02 and Adventure characters these two probably get the least amount of interaction. At best I’d call them acquaintances who just so happen to have mutual friends.

Personal Ranking (3/10) All the same cons as all the other 02/Adventure ships but taken to the max. I only rank it higher Sori because there’s a slightly less age gap.

Sora x Jun (Junora)

Pros: With these two you can pull a Korra/Asami and cut Matt off at the knees. If you’re pissed at how 02 handled relationships this can be cathartic. It’s also a femslash option that winds up being very different in dynamics from the other yuri pairings in the show.

Cons: Jun knows of Sora’s existence, and they’ve shared scenes together. Yet they’ve never talked to one another, and I’m not sure if Sora even knows who she is. Then there’s the fact that Jun is very decisive in fandom.

Personal Ranking (7/10) I really like Jun. I also like the potential dynamic that her and Sora can have. I also like getting back at Matt after the way he treated Jun. So this ship is a win/win for me.

Sora x Meiko (Meiora)

Pros: Lots of interactions and shippy moments to work off of. It’s the ‘moe’ dynamic but made gay. Triangle drama free or increased triangle drama, take your pick.

Cons: Just like with Meichi and Meimato, how much you like this ship will depend on how much you like Meiko as a character. If you thought her annoying in Tri, you’ll no doubt be annoyed by this.

Personal Ranking (6/10) This is like Sokari but made good? Kari as she gets older becomes more Sora like and Sora as she gets older becomes more Kari like. But Mei remains the woobie/soft girl through out, so you get the protectiveness and lesbian interaction minus the awkward age gap.

Izzy x Mimi (Mishirou)

Pros: It’s ‘beauty and the geek’ but with an added twist. There’s some of those awkward crush moments in Tri if you like that, but mostly Izzy is very confident and assertive, just like Mimi. They tend to call out each other’s bullshit the most often. Also Mini is perhaps the second character Izzy hangs out with one on one the most besides Tai.

Cons: The crush in Tri comes out of almost nowhere and feels like pandering. Izzy never seemed to care for Mimi in that way before and indeed was annoyed with her more often than not. Then somewhere in the middle of Tri the crush was just completely dropped altogether without any resolvement one way or the other.

Personal Ranking (6/10) I’ve warmed up to it somewhat since Tri. There is a basis there, but it does feel very forced at times, and I don't get the overwhelming love for it. It’s merely ok at best.

Izzy x Joe (Jyoushirou)

Pros: Geek meets Nerd! That’s about it. If you really like these two characters then they work just about as well as any other ship in the show. There’s also the comedic elements to their interactions together to play off of. It also nips the Izzy/Mimi/Joe triangle in the bud.

Cons: They have more moments together than Sora and Izzy, but not more than say Joe and Matt. It’s brief comedic moments when we get them together and not many serious or deep interactions.

Personal Ranking (5/10) Eh..There’s a foundation there to build something off of, but for whatever reason it just doesn’t gel for me.

Izzy x T.K. (Takshirou)

Pros: They’re closer in age then some of the other 02/Adventure characters, and they do interact often in all three seasons.

Cons: Still most of those interactions are either plot related or group scenes. There’s not a whole lot to go off of.

Personal Ranking (4/10) I don't get why someone would ship these two, yet I wouldn’t be outright opposed to it if they did.

Izzy x Kari (Kokari)

Pros: Same pros as Takshirou

Cons: Same cons as Takshirou

Personal Ranking (4/10) for the same reasons as Takshirou.

Izzy x Davis (Daishiro)

Pros: I guess if you like the Taishiro dynamic, but not enough to break Tai up with one of his more popular ships then this could be an option.

Cons: It’s Taishiro lite with all the added problems that comes from shiping the 02/Adventure cast.

Personal Ranking (4/10) For the same reasons stated as for Takshirou and Kokari.

Izzy x Yolei (Koyako)

Pros: Of all the 02/Adventures ships this has the smallest age gap. The age difference between her and Izzy is the same a Izzy the rest of the adventure gang. As such they spend a lot of time together. They also have a similar dynamic to Mishirou, but with the added dimension of Yolei being a nerd as well. She can keep up with Izzy’s technobabble and often assists him in his projects.

Cons: Izzy does have a reduced role in 02 like the rest of the adventure gang, though not quite as bad as some. Meanwhile Yolei only appears in 02 except for like a cameo here and there. So while they do interact one on one on occasion it’s not a whole lot.

Personal Ranking (7/10) To me this has all the pros of Mishirou, but none of the cons. They’re both assertive and capable of calling out each other’s bs, but they also have a deeper understanding of one another can more in common to build off of.

Izzy x Cody (Kori)

Pros: It’s the mentor/friend dynamic again. They have a lot in common and are seen hanging out together a lot.

Cons: Same age difference as with the other mentor ships and like with Koyako they’re scenes are limited to only 02.

Personal Rankings (3/10) It’s got more of a basis then the other Cody ships thus far, but that’s not saying much.

Izzy x Ken (Kenshirou)

Pros: Uh.. It’s assertive nerd boy meets shy nerd boy, I guess? There’s also the whole former villain thing for some added angst if you want.

Cons: Not a whole lot of one on one interact and when we do get it it’s mostly plot exposition

Personal Ranking (4/10) I put this on the same level as Takshirou, Kokari, and Daishiro

Izzy x Jun (Junshirou)

Pros: It breaks all of the triangles involving both of them. They’re both fun characters. Pair the spares. They both went on that camping trip once. Comedy.

Cons: This ship is as close as crack as you can get without being full on crack. They’ve met, they know of each other’s existence, and they’ve been in the same scene together more than once. But they’ve never actually talked with one another on screen before.

Personal Ranking (7/10) I just like Jun. I don’t care who you pair her with, it’s entertaining because she’s enterianing.

Izzy x Meiko (Meishirou)

Pros: I guess if you like both characters then you’ll like this ship just fine. Can double as a pair the spares in order to resolve the Izzy/Mimi/Joe tringle.

Cons: Mei has less interaction with Izzy than some of the rest of the group. Also it’s dependent upon how much you like Mei as a character.

Personal Ranking (5/10) It’s not bad, but give me Junshirou, Koyako, or Taishirou over it any day of the week.

Quin’s type:

One the traits he’d like in someone is that they who won’t rush or cram too many things because to be frank, Quin is TIRED enough already in rushing too many things nearly everyday. He doesn’t want to also rush getting into a relationship. Though, just for them, he won’t complain in the slightest, not even in his head.

His type is someone who’s a lot more confident and positive-thinking than himself though not to the point of stupidity, although that too is charming in its own way a bit Quin also likes someone who will absolutely go for anything they want damned be the consequences since he used to be just like that when he was little though he then quickly panics a bit and tries to (failingly) persuade them to back out of it if it seems like too much trouble or they could get in danger.

If his S/O is a book lover/nerd/interested in magical beasts then you can bet this boy is instantly over the moon and is 101% thrilled to read books with them or tell them about all the various stories of yore, ancient magical creatures, etc. etc.

Sei’s type:

Someone cute, small, and soft is his preferred type. No, it’s not because he wants to easily monopolize them, rather, it’s because Sei is actually SCARED that he might end up losing them as well one day that this is the type of person he’s trying to find as his S/O since it’s easier to keep an eye out for someone with this description. Sure, while he loves a good game of hide and seek on the occasion, he doesn’t want his S/O out of sights for too long because he steadily gets anxious and fearful of potentially losing them.

An S/O with an aversion to conflict quickly pulls him in, and he doesn’t mind being their support all the time. He wants someone to always stay by his side no matter what may happen or whatever he says or does because he just wants reassurance that they won’t go anywhere and won’t leave him.

Sei feels drawn to people with a gentle heart while also being courageous but not stupid and knows what they’re doing. If they’re somewhat innocent then he feels inclined to keep them that way so that he doesn’t have to see them break down and lose themselves.

Lala’s type:

Someone strong. Like, physically strong. Someone who can hold their own in a fight will make her heart swell with pride, even more so if they win… which leads to her more often than not challenging them on occasion. They could also be someone who looks really tough on the outside, but v soft on the inside

Thoouuuggghhh—… her other type could also be someone who’s actually not physically strong but they’re incredibly nice and kindhearted. Sure, those types of people make her sick to the stomach due to how disgustingly nice they are, but she can’t help but be drawn to them all the same.

It’s fine too if they’re not particularly bright since she herself has braincells, even if she doesn’t use them all the time. Either way, she’d fight everyone if it meant protecting the one thing she wants to keep close.

Ophiou’s type:

He would like an angel. Please. Though because this isn’t a fairytale and he’s a monster, he doesn’t have high hopes at all hahaha—

The type of S/O Ophi is looking for is someone who’s very kindhearted and nice despite his initial harsh and distant words- they’d have to persistently try to get close to him because it won’t be easy to take down all his emotional walls and awkwardness. He doesn’t give a shit as to what race his S/O might be since all that matters to him is how the other person feels.

Because he is a soft guy at heart, he gets mushy if his S/O is the type of person who showers their lover with affection and is easily set flustered when they’re teasing him despite his usually quick recoil words.

Cirnu’s type:

THE DAD FIGURE TO HER MOM FIGURE- THE BIG BROTHER FIGURE TO HER BIG SISTER FIGURE—//shot

Okay in all seriousness, she only wants [a good man]. By that I mean, she wants someone who is kind to others but isn’t a total pushover and knows when to be strict when they need to be. Someone who doesn’t like violence or fighting, but will be the first to engage in it if it meant protecting others and those they care about. Of course, flaws are inevitable and thus when things are too much for them to handle then she’ll be there for them and support them through and through. Someone romantic, but keeps things simple and personal (except for the occasional grand gestures, but only rarely).

She doesn’t mind a height difference really, but if her S/O is shorter than her then she can’t help but feel like lightheartedly teasing them just a little bit.

Bel’s type:

He’s not really looking for romance though it doesn’t mean that he hasn’t given it a single thought at least once. Though the first thing he wants in a potential S/O is someone who doesn’t buy all the shit that he says and is quite persistent, that or someone whom he’s known for a long long while now preferably long ago in the past.

Bel’s type of S/O is someone who is very independent, truly sincere, and quiet but not too quiet since it would remind him too much of a doll, he doesn’t mind them speaking a lot just so long as they don’t constantly shout or yell- they’re completely honest about everything they say (though he’s still panicking on the inside about whether or not they’re lying and can’t help but try to analyze and use his natural internal skepticism out of paranoia). If they’re a bit shy or have gap moe then prepare yourself for being teased, Bel won’t stop until you’re completely red in the face.

He’d also like someone who doesn’t take shit from other people and WILL have a good comeback at the aggressor, though if he sees that it’s actually having an effect on his S/O then Bel himself will do something about it. No one hurts the only person whom he genuinely cares about in the entire world and gets away scot-free.

Fuyu’s type:

Due to her complete inexperience with emotions and feelings, she herself isn’t sure about what an “S/O” is, and considering that she’s never felt or experienced love, she herself doesn’t know what it means to WANT a lover/partner.

Although if pressed for details persistently, then she might reply with “Someone “humane”… a person who’s liked by others and knows what they want.” Essentially, the type of person she’s looking for is someone open with others, confident, has flaws but doesn’t let themselves be taken over or swallowed by it (tho if they’re actually just really good at hiding it then it’s fine; she’ll still stay by their side and hold their hand or hug them).

Fuyu finds herself attracted to those who are true to themselves while remaining nice to other people, and if it’s just an act then she finds herself all the more curious about what is up with them and why they’re acting like this.

Shir’s type:

The type of person that he would fall for is someone strong— no, they don’t have to be physically strong, but rather, someone who won’t let themselves get beaten down so easily by others and will get right back up if they do tumble. Shir respects those types of people and can’t help but be drawn in by them. If they’re a bit too feisty then he’ll act as their self-restraint and quickly try to pull them out of that situation before they get hurt.

He doesn’t mind them being independent, actually, he encourages their independence, though he does feel the need to protect and keep them safe every so often. If his S/O is prone to having problems with anything then he’ll sit down with them and have a personal but also deep talk with them in order to get the bottom of it, since he doesn’t want to see them hurting for any longer.

Are you short or tall? That’s okay because it doesn’t matter! If his S/O is short then he becomes all the more protective and clingy over them but won’t undermine their authority, and if his S/O is tall then he feels all the more reassured that they can handle themselves on their own (tho if they’re taller than him then he laughs about how knowing how Lala feels now)

Blue Lions Route

So I finished the Blue Lions Route!

Why I chose Blue Lions: Okay, so when the first trailer was dropped, I thought Edelgard would be my favorite. I liked her character design and I just thought she was really pretty, but Dimitri was on my radar because lol they named a FE character after my chinchilla, nice. I ended up picking Dimitri, because what I knew about his character arc appealed to my sensibilities and I thought he was the nicest during the House introductions, talking about his classmates.

Who Was My Dancer: Felix. I thought he looked cute in the outfit, had the potential for magic anyway as well as swords, and had the avoidance to not be nuked by enemies with his pitiful defense/resistance. He made a great dancer! From my understanding, it might’ve been a bit of a waste, because of gambits, but I didn’t really understand them or use them much in this playthrough

Who Did Byleth Marry: Dimitri... not so much because I ship them as characters as I just liked Dimitri the best. Don’t @ me

Which Dimitri Do I prefer?: Pre-timeskip! I wasn’t a super fan of either character design at first, but I just do not enjoy how self-loathing and mean Dimitri was for a good chunk of the timeskip. I feel like the fandom calling that “feral Dimitri” is a bit of a misnomer. When he returns to being is usual self, it was a welcome change

General Thoughts: I liked the route! It was a good-enough personal arc for Dimitri to keep me engaged, despite some of the mechanics getting in the way of the story. I wish Dedue had been more important to the post-timeskip portion. Mostly, though, I was surprised how short the route was; I’m used to 28ish chapters, so I’m a bit nervous to see how long Crimson Flowers is if that’s the shortest route. I liked all my house characters and had a good time.

The Blue Lions Characters:

Dimitri: I think he’s probably the most well-developed, consistently done character in the entire game. I love his character, his supports, and his empathy. There have been a lot of other people who’ve done a great job analyzing his character, so I won’t bother, but A+ boi

Dedue: I like Dedue and his role as Dimitri’s retainer, but he’s not particularly appealing to me. In general, I don’t like the gap moe that comes with strong, silent types that have a feminine side. I think he was a bit of an improvement from Benny (who I liked but didn’t pay much attention to), and I was so grateful to make him not a Fortress Knight (War Master or whatever Dedue did a lot of good punching) because that is probably my least favorite unit type.

Felix: I had a good idea I’d like Felix, because I tend to like tsunderes regardless of gender, but from how the fandom memes about him, I was surprised by the depths of my fondness. He often gets labelled as an asshole, but I would be more generous and say he’s merely got an abrasive side, like a sponge. He had some good, cute moments in his supports and I think his presence added to the story of Azure Moon. I also like that he’s like the only character that has different endings if you recruit him to a different route.

Sylvain: I know he can be a bit of a controversial character because of his playboy ways, but I like him! I like horse-mounted units and units that can use magic, so he was gonna be a winner for me. I also understand why some people don’t like him and find him to be sexist, but he didn’t particularly read that way to me. To be fair, I find Sylvain’s backstory to be relatable because I myself have a similar situation, of sorts, with my older brother, so I’m just inclined to be more lenient about his more negative traits. I think it hurts Sylvain’s likability that some (or maybe all) of his supports aren’t pre-timeskip locked to demonstrate he really does change his ways, but I think his supports are good and that he’s never irredeemably awful to anyone.

Ingrid: Another hot take: Ingrid is probably my favorite BL girl lol. I think she’s cute, she’s got some gap moe to her with being so stern but also a food-loving goober and super excitable about knight stuff. My friend said she never was able to get Ingrid to be usable, but my Ingrid rocked. I feel like she had the most connections to the story of BL of the girls, and I wish they had used her more.

Ashe: It’s a toss-up whether he’s my second fav or Felix is, but I love Ashe. I’m pretty pro archer characters (sans Bernadetta), but Ashe is also just so sweet and caring, despite some of the things he’s been through. I think he’s very cute and a great unit. I might end up marrying him to Byleth if I playthrough BL again (which I will to get DLC supports)

Annette: I like her, but I don’t think she really stands out. I feel sorry that she has to deal with Gilbert, but honestly you could erase Annette from the main story and it wouldn’t change a thing, sadly. I think she’s cute and quirky and I like her spunk, but there’s really not too much to say about her.

Mercedes: I love Mercedes, but similarly to Annette, she doesn’t add as much to the storyline as I’d like, outside of the thing with the Death Knight, which is almost a footnote tbh. I like her character design and her supports and she’s an all-around great unit and character.

Gilbert: Ugh, I spent a lot of my time complaining about what a whiner he is. As I mentioned, not a fan of Fortress Knights, and Gilbert not only had a base speed of 2 but would regularly miss with an 70-80% hit rate. As a character, I thought he had some good supports, but in general I hate that Dedue took a backseat to him, and that Gilbert is a horrible father. I view as Gilbert a good model for Dimitri, in that Dimitri should not follow Gilbert’s example in how to express and process grief and guilt. Another reason I dislike Gilbert is that I got locked out of his support chain with Catherine, and that’s just annoying

Technically, since I’ve recruited every character except Claude, Edelgard, and Hubert (and I guess the DLC, but now I’ve unlocked them) and almost every associated support, I could write out my thoughts on them, but I’ll save that for the appropriate routes.

Assorted Bulleted Thoughts:

Hubert: Man, he just popped up as a cartoonish villain to defeat all the time, and I digged it haha. It became tradition to have Ingrid fly in and to kill him in one hit without taking any damage. It was great. I felt bad that Edelgard had Not A Word to say about Hubert’s death.

Edelgard: She was built-up so much as the person that had to be defeated to end the war, but there was a lot of dicking around (and all the time we had to go back to homebase for long periods of time) that Edelgard didn’t really get the time to flesh her out as an antagonist or make me, the player, feel particularly motivated to defeat her. Especially when you learn she apparently had nothing to do with the Tragedy of Duscur, and Dimitri is pretty lukewarm about having to kill his stepsister, once he clears his head. Though, that final animated cutscene was top tier

Rhea: I think there should have been one chapter either before or after fighting Edelgard where you rescue Rhea, because as it is, the way her return is handled is incredibly sloppy and emotionally dead. Not even a scene where Flayn and Seteth greet her. Lame

Marianne: She was my favorite and first recruited unit. Love her. That’s all

I wish all the Blue Lions had been able to reach A-support with each other, especially Sylvain. I think there woul’ve been a lot he could have gained as a character especially.

It is dumb as hell male Byleth can’t S-support Dimitri, or any of the male Blue Lions, for that matter. If you could add one male student from GD and BL to be bi, I would’ve picked Dimitri or Ashe from BL. Everyone in GD is pretty hetero, so I will arbitrarily choose Ignatz

Hello! What would you say are your top 5 favorite relationships (not necessarily ships) in Snk as presented in canon?

Hi, and sorry for being so late in replying to this! Considering how messed up all the relationships are in the current timeline I had a hard time trying to remember what I liked best once upon a time.

Anyways, in no particular order:

Mikasa and Sasha

The 104 in general

Eren and Zeke

Levi and Levi Squad(s)

Eren and Mikasa

1. I feel like Mikasa was closest to Sasha, if you exclude Armin and Eren. Sasha is the only girl that was left in their squad since Uprising, as Historia was kidnapped or busy being a Queen, but Mikasa has always had more chemistry with Sasha, anyway, because her best, cutest qualities (such as her playfulness) came forth, imo. Mikasa and Sasha were also stated to share a room, and Mikasa is the only one that doesn’t mind Sasha’s snoring. Most of all, I love that we can see Mikasa being a normal girl around Sasha, while still worrying.

I mean, worrying about her friends is in her nature, but somehow I really appreciate how close they were, considering that Sasha is a friend she made when she was older, in a totally different environment from her childhood and the trauma from those days. They always had a nice and fun dynamic, since the very beginning. And I think Sasha felt quite comfortable around Mikasa, compared to how nervous she was shown to be around Ymir (and Krista).

Mikasa screaming and crying over a dying Sasha, and later crying by herself at her grave just…hurt me so bad. Her best girl friend had died.

2. The 104th. We have been following them since the very beginning and I’ve grown to love them and how much they love each other so much. They are survivors, they would protect each other with their life, they are just inseparable. So canon events really hurt. But their love is still there, and strong.

They are hurting so bad because of their love. It’s really tragic but I can’t get enough of it.

3. Eren and Zeke. We still don’t know how Eren feels about Zeke, but I’m floored by how Zeke treats Eren. He opened up to him completely, without reserve, bared himself and his life goal to him. And I can safely say that Eren gave him hope, even if it might have been only fake. Zeke felt uplifted by Eren’s words, to keep moving forward to reach your dreams and goals. It’s something lots of people are inspired by, when it comes to Eren, but Zeke had all the reasons to believe Eren was brainwashed by Grisha.

And yet, he still wants to help, save and protect his half-brother, simply because he is scared he might have been suffering just like he did.

He may be projecting, but he also came to care about Eren for real.

Also, I sort of think Eren might have been so forgiving of Reiner when he met him again, because he has seen the harsh treatment Zeke himself has been put through, so, even if he may show no mercy like with Reiner in the end, I expect him to still feel very bad for Zeke. It would be nice if he gave him some words of comfort in the end, and not just what Zeke wants to hear. In any case, that’s the relationship I’m most invested in at the moment!

4. I feel like the best parts of Levi (and the ones I prefer) really shine through when he mentors or just interacts with his subordinates, and in particular with the 104th.

I started liking Levi not because of how badass or rude he is (I rarely like characters like this), but because of how deeply he cared for his comrades. As a powerful soldier, and a person that isn’t really that good at expressing himself, I really loved how he still took time to mentor, and guide the new soldiers in his squad, conscious of how young and inexperienced they were and helped them overcome their insecurities, without beating around the bush or lying to them.

That way, even the most skeptical (Jean and Mikasa) developed great trust in him as someone that can help them and whose leadership they willingly want to follow. And he is obviously very fond of them, and trusts them in return.

This moment was also really cute.

In general, I like that his cute, softer side comes through when he’s with them. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 104th fondly make fun of his moe gap when he’s not around.

5. Eren & Mikasa as presented in canon, so not as a ship (though I’m not opposed to it, in fanon). I am so curious about how their relationship will evolve. My feelings for their interactions changed a lot during these years, but I’ve reached a point where I have a mega soft spot for them. Eren saved Mikasa by showing her kindness after a very traumatic event. Saved her during that traumatic event by giving her strength and a reason to stand up for herself against injustice, when the world had taken everything away from her, her life and freedom included. And Eren’s existence has later on given her strength to continue living even without him. Because of how immature they both were, she couldn’t really be there for him like she would’ve wanted and he would have perhaps needed. She ended up being suffocating and demeaning and he rejected her fussing quite strongly. But they mutually cared a lot about each other even then and I’m glad they grew up - on their own and together -, and their relationship changed with it. It became one of my favorites.

The whole Ackerbond thing has always had weird and potentially problematic undertones so I’m glad it was finally addressed in canon. This way, there’s a big chance that their relationship will be clarified as one that most of all is based on love and the “magical” bonding stuff will finally disappear from their bond. Anyway, I’m digressing… I’m looking forward to their future interactions, in particular to Mikasa’s internal struggles. I hope she’ll realise that the scarf was a symbol of love, home and protection, and not of duty and control, so she doesn’t have to give it up.

Wanna be the Strongest in the World - Episode 12

Holy shit, last time. Just, holy shit. Let’s see if they can stick the landing. It’s the big finish, in Wanna be the Strongest in the World, episode 12! Here we GO!

-Start right where we left off, with Sakura in a vicious sleeper hold and trying to keep awake, when she goes unresponsive…!

-Opening!

-Episode Twelve: To the World!

-Elena keeps on the hold, as Sakura goes utterly limp…When Misaki slapping the mat snaps her awake! You’re not through yet, kid! A flash of adrenaline hits her and she’s up like a rocket, standing with Elena still hanging off her neck and shoulders! One hard drop manages to put them both flat on the mat and get Sakura free of the Spider’s Web…

-But with both of them so exhausted, the match just turns to big, messy throws, Elena managing to get a pin…A pin that Sakura forces her way out of, countering Elena in a move that she barely escapes…Only for Sakura to flip it back against her, slamming her into one of the corner posts and then giving her a ferocious jump-kick that sends her right over the ropes and to the ground! She hits hard, and finds Sakura looming above her, perched like some vicious predator atop the post…

-And she comes down on her hard, both of them left sprawled out just outside of the ring as everyone watches! The hype is unreal, the drama is overwhelming, and Jackal is eating this shit up. These two have an instinct for this, their story is for real…God, it makes you wish Elena hadn’t put her career on the line, because this rivalry could’ve put asses in seats for a generation…

-So they get back into the ring, where they’re both just exhausted enough that they’re too easy to get open, as Sakura eats a vicious series of throws, and gets her left leg put into another agonizing hold! Elena’s reading her, now, she can see the fire in Sakura, that core yearning to win that drove her here in the first place…It’s overwhelming, it’s awe-inspiring, but it’s that fire she has to snuff out!

-Sakura manages to get the rope, but Elena’s right back on her, picking her up to do a drop right onto her head! Sakura’s left upside down, forced to flail her way out of a pin…But with her left on the mat, Elena races for a corner post, going for an amazing leap…

-One that Sakura reads, and brings her legs up so Elena hits them hard. But not just Elena…The sheer force that it puts through Sakura’s legs puts her knee into agony. At this rate, there’s a very real chance she’ll cost herself both her careers by trying to protect this one… (Well, look on the bright side, Kanae could totally use an assistant and then we could do a season all about sports reporting and cute girls with cameras! …Okay that’s only really a bright side for me. Shut up.)

-So instead of it being a perfect counter, both of them end up actually rising at the same time…Elena eats a pin and escapes it, and both have to stop to recover…But it’s Sakura who rises up first from that one and starts pulling on her influences! She puts Elena through one of Rio’s specials, the Northern Lights Bomb! And she does it so smoothly that even Rio is fucking impressed, and do you have any idea how hard it is to impress a Rio type?

-Somehow, Elena manages to get out of it, but the moves keep coming, back and forth, back and forth…The crowd is going nuts, the cheers are wild, idol fans are being turned into wrestling fans live here on this stage…

-And then Sakura ducks down hard for the Somersault. One that she puts it ALL into…But it’s not done yet, either! Elena doesn’t take enough force to flip and eat the mat, so Sakura springs herself up onto the corner post, and while Elena’s still flat, Sakura comes down with a whirling, corkscrew drop into the PIN! One, two…

-THREE!!!!

-It’s OVER! The bell rings, and Sakura claims victory! She comboed out of her Somersault into a triple-twist press that put Elena down for the COUNT! It’s done, it’s decided, and the audience explodes into cheers, Kanae just has her camera shooting on full-auto bursts like a goddamned machine gun so she doesn’t lose a second of this…And off on the sidelines, Ryo is the only one seeing these two have some shit they need to sort out, and just the ring isn’t gonna be enough.

-But back in that ring, Sakura manages to rise, and helps Elena up in turn…But an honorable defeat, a failure of everything she was striving for, leaves Elena standing there quietly sobbing, unwilling to lose Sakura after everything…She’s left just begging, despite the terms put out, begging her longtime partner to come back to the stage, to come back to her! She’s only half a soul without Sakura there to fight with and against, she doesn’t know how to achieve her dreams without Sakura there…She NEEDS her!

-Everyone goes utterly silent…And then, the cheers start, as this heartfelt display of emotion has people taking Elena’s side…Especially when the rest of the core Sweet Diva crew show up…!

-And thus is their heartfelt plea, begging Sakura to return to them…And Sakura finds herself at a crossroads. There are two core groups of fans in this audience. The set that want Sakura to return to being an idol, and the set that have fallen in love with her as a wrestler. There are not enough hours in the day to do both, not if she wants to achieve either dream. No matter what she does, she breaks someone’s heart. Her friends from Berserk cry out to her in turn, wanting her to stay in the ring, to chase her dream of reaching the top…And through it all, the only one to really know what’s going through Sakura’s head, Misaki, stays silent…

-Up in the stands, Sakura’s longest-time core fans ask themselves what to do, looking to their most dedicated leader…And all he can say is that it has to be her decision. He won’t try to sway this girl who inspired him so much, because the only right answer is the one that comes from her heart!

-And that’s when the doors open…And Jackal Tojo steps down into the arena, a microphone in hand!

-The audience goes silent, and Jackal throws more shit into this, because she thinks Sakura proved herself…You don’t belong in the Japanese women’s wrestling circuit, Sakura, you belong in Shangri-La, wrestling women from all around the world! Come with her when she leaves this place, and make your world debut!

-God dammit Jackal.

-I know what you’re doing but god dammit Jackal.

-So yeah the audience is losing their fucking minds because now there’s three factions. The ones who want Sakura to go back to Sweet Diva. The ones who want to see Sakura rise up through Berserk and top the Japanese women’s wrestling circuit. And the ones who want to see her skip a grade and go up to the big leagues of Shangri-La.

-And through it all, Sakura is frozen…Because…She, she can’t just abandon everyone. No matter what she chooses, she hurts someone, and she can’t allow that. The one choice she can’t make right now, is Shangri-La. No matter how tempting it is, that means abandoning Sweet Diva and Berserk, and nothing is worth that. But, to wrestle or to sing…

-Jackal, thus, decides there’s only one answer…Stand at that center, Hagiwara Sakura! You’re an entertainer, a star, your heart is already fully devoted to putting on a grand show…So live it, breathe it, squeeze yourself dry to have enough to fill both vessels! She knows you, Sakura, and knows who and what you are. The choice was made the moment you fell in love with wrestling…There was no path for you but to find a way to stand atop two worlds, to become an ICON! The strongest wrestler, the most heartfelt idol, the queen of Japan’s culture is your fate…If you can become great enough to grasp it in your hand!

-And the audience goes WILD at the idea, cheering for her, chanting her name…And Elena, Elena wants to see Sakura do it. If anyone can, it’s her…

-Who the hell said anything about you getting out of this?

-Cue Juri, who’s made a decision. The Blue Panther retired this day…Not Miyazawa Elena. You’re nearly as good as Sakura, and your gap is entirely because of lack of time in the ring. You have the potential to both be world-class, and you proved yourself able to live the double-life. Represent Miyabi to the world! You would never have gotten this far here if you didn’t have the fire, the love for the ring…! You’re a pro in your heart!

-The only way they can do this, is together…Rivals and comrades across two worlds, each able to help the balance of the other…And Elena once again breaks into tears, as the audience chants her name, and Jackal whips them up into a frenzy…!

-So, they both face that impossibility…And grasp it with both hands! Two souls who love nothing more than to inspire those before them. Two who have fallen in love with the stage and the ring. Two who will live both lives, for as long as they possibly can…To become legends.

-And when Juri goes to take her leave…Misaki and Kanae are there. Three who once stood together, who have some long-standing issues to clear up themselves…

-But before that, Jackal brings in the Sweet Diva group, and they do the credits song and dance live right there for Sakura and Elena’s incredibly hype fanbase! Oh, and Moe’s pretty hype too, seeing how amazing her mentor truly is.

-Aftercredits! So several months later, it’s a brief shot of their life a few months later…Literally seconds after the curtains drop on a Sweet Diva show, Sakura and Elena are sprinting off to the arena a few blocks away, having a big match…And then their encore concert after that good god. But they’re somehow, making it work!

Well, I suppose there was only one way it could end…I don’t know how long Sakura and Elena can maintain that kind of lifestyle, but that’s bringing perhaps too much realism to a feel-good tatty-wrestling anime.

And in the end, this was definitely really fun. While of course it had to present wrestling as unscripted, because a story about scripted wrestling would be very different, it still got a lot of the…Heart, I guess, of that world across. Even if it perhaps sometimes spent too much time on women screaming while we zoom in on chests and groins.

But is it all over? Not quite yet! Tomorrow I’m gonna try and track down all the OVAs and burn through those…And then after that, well, I’ve got some big shows planned! Just you wait!

Tsumugi: Aah! So you've already heard about that. I think there should be some onesie straps this time, and after seeing them, Tsunashi-san told me he wanted a set of King Pudding onesies for all three of you.

Tsumugi: Then, he remembered that he has a picture of when he lent you shisa pajamas...

Gaku: I don't remember anything like that... Why's there a picture like that on Ryu's phone...

Tsumugi: I hear that you stayed over at his house, got drunk, and excitedly put them on ><

Gaku: The power of alcohol, huh. Booze is seriously scary. You should watch yourself once you're old enough to drink too, Tsumugi.

Tsumugi: Y-yes! I'll be careful. Um, I'm perfectly fine without seeing that picture, so >< I'm sorry for having disturbed you...

Gaku: No, it's fine... I just got it from Ryu, so I'll send it to you.

Gaku: Tenn's going to reject that as much as he can, but... Ryu can be overbearing sometimes, so he might actually buy them (lol) Since he already wears that omurice t-shirt a lot, I don't think it'll make that big of a difference, though.

3. I didn't know you could even be this cute!

Gaku: Ah, I'm glad I sent that to you, but it's seriously embarrassing... I want you to think I'm cool.

Gaku: It's pretty weird for a guy to own onesie pajamas.

Tsumugi: That's not true! Tamaki-san wore a crocodile costume for work once (2), and he liked it so much he bought some onesies to use as pajamas.

Gaku: Maybe it's fine for Yotsuba. It suits his personality. But I'm no good, right?

Tsumugi: I think it has great potential! lol

Gaku: You sure are strong (lol)

Tsumugi: Really? We girls are weak against gap moe..!

Gaku: IDOLiSH7 is a real goldmine of gaps.

Gaku: I saw Tenn and Nanase's clear file, and that King Pudding that's drawn on the tanzaku paper (3) was done by Osaka, right? I thought he'd be good at drawing.

Tsumugi: I also noticed it afterwards, but... it's Sogo-san's style ><

Tsumugi: Tamaki-san told him he was worried that some higher-ups might get mad at Sogo-san, so he's a bit nervous...

Gaku: I'm sure it'll be fine (lol) If I was the one in charge of these, it'd just make me happy.

Gaku: Whether it's good or bad, as long as it's got love, the person receiving it will understand.

Tsumugi: When you put it like that, I think so too ><

The 2019 Summer League Standouts

Summer League is finally coming to a close. Just because many didn’t watch lackluster doesn’t mean that *I* didn’t. Yes, I got my fair share of live ball turnovers, travels, and bricks, but I do enjoy watching journeymen fight for one more chance and young players dipping their toes into the shark-infested NBA waters. With that being the case, there were a few players who caught my eyes and stood out during Summer League. Here’s who did and how they did it.

Lonnie Walker IV SG SA: Surprise surprise. The Spurs’ player development program has paid dividends. Lonnie Walker IV is just the latest example. It feels like he made it his personal mission to serve buckets to anybody who tried to defend both in the Utah and Vegas Summer League, and that he has. In 4 games, Walker IV averaged 24.75 points per game shooting 55% from the field. The 4-to-9 negative assist-turnover ratio can be improved upon, but he flashed three-level scoring ability (especially in the midrange game), fulfilling some of the Donovan Mitchell comparisons he got coming out of Miami. The Spurs suddenly have a deep backcourt with Dejounte Murray returning alongside Derrick White and DeMar DeRozan, and Lonnie looks ready to contribute alongside them.

Anfernee Simons PG/SG POR: You like buckets? Well, get a load of Anfernee Simons, because he got a lot of them in Vegas. He showed an ability to score efficiently at all three levels and flashed fancy yet lethal footwork and handle in the process, averaging 22 points per game in the desert while shooting 55% from the field and 64.7% from three-point range. After trading Evan Turner to Atlanta, the Blazers believe Simons is ready to step into their backup point guard spot off the bench. While a 5-12 assist-turnover ratio does not exactly exude confidence running a team, he clearly can help a team keep up on second units, something Portland could use to give Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum longer spells of rest.

Mfiondu Kabengele C LAC / Terance Mann SG LAC: Until another Canadian rookie dominated in consecutive games, I thought Mfiondu Kabengele was the best rookie that played in Summer League. But it wasn’t just him. His former Florida State teammate Terance Mann looked very sharp as well. Kabengele showed his versatility as a brute in the paint routinely stuffing bigs like Moe Wagner right in their path then running the floor, splashing 3s (he shot 7-16 from deep in Summer League) and playing hard all the time. Mann, on the other hand, showed he’s more than just a ‘3-and-D’ guy. He is a more than able creator with the ball in his hands, whether through the pass or looking to score, to go along with his defense. Both of these guys are perfect fits within the Clippers culture of toughness and versatility. For a team that gave up 5(!!!!!) first round picks in the deal for Paul George to land both him and Kawhi Leonard, they’ll need more young players to help sustain this run they’re about to embark upon. These two look like they can contribute right away.

Zach Norvell Jr. SG LAL: Norvell does not have a very sexy game. He isn’t going to routinely break a defense down off the dribble but has shown he can do it, whether it be via drive and kick potential assists or buckets for himself. He has a quick release to get shots off from deep before contests come his way, as evidenced by his game-winner against the Warriors in Sacramento. He’s a willing defender who does well at fighting through screens and using his length to get deflections. He is a very solid, willing passer who routinely makes the extra pass to get his team great shots rather than take good shots Though he is only on a 2-way contract, he looks like the prototypical kind of role player to surround stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis. I had him ranked 44th overall on my big board. That the Lakers got him as an undrafted free agent is a steal.

Tyler Herro SG MIA: Kudos to Tyler Herro for being amongst the few lotteries picks to actually play. Not only did Herro play, but he played very well. Obviously, his range is limitless, but that hasn’t been all he’s shown. While not great at playing through contact, his playmaking in space really impressed me during his time playing in Sacramento and Vegas. He is way more than just a shooter; he can score or playmake off the dribble as well. Miami used him as a de facto point guard during Summer League to help let Herro work on his off the dribble game. While he probably won’t be asked to bring the ball up with the big club, these skills can really come in handy if he gets ran off the three-point line. He fits in well with Jimmy Butler and the other young players Miami has, who knows how to use shooters like Herro (just ask Ray Allen or Wayne Ellington). I thought Miami reached a little to take Herro. I stand corrected, for now at least.

Kyle Guy SG SAC: Basically, anything I said about Herro applies to Kyle Guy, just a lesser version. I thought Guy should’ve been drafted, at the very least. His play in Sacramento and Vegas backed that up for me.

Kendrick Nunn SG MIA / Duncan Robinson SF MIA: Two former undrafted free agents with drastically different games proved that they belong. Kendrick Nunn is a long, athletic, scoring wing who uses his length defensively as well. He gets busy offensively with his long strides, ability to play through contact and flashed an ability to score at all levels. Duncan Robinson may look nothing like an NBA player, yet he looks like exactly like an NBA player. Again, he is more than just a shooter. He repeatedly looked very comfortable putting the ball on the floor and finishing plays after getting run off the three-point line, whether on catch and shoot situations or running off screens or running the offense himself. He is comfortable shooting on the move and hitting contested shots, including this absurd shot on the move *over* the backboard. These two proved they belong in the league. The Heat guaranteed Duncan Robinson’s $1 million for next season, basically securing a roster spot for him on the team next season. We’ll see if Nunn gets the same guarantee as well.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker PG NOLA / Jaxson Hayes C NOLA: Remember when I said Kabengele was the best rookie in Summer League until another Canadian came in and swooped that title away? Well, I wasn’t talking about RJ Barrett. No, I was referring to Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Since all we saw from Zion Williamson was him snatching the soul of Kevin Knox before injuring his knee, his teammate Nickeil stepped up and assured us a Pelican would dominate Summer League. We already knew his ability to and his feel was his best attribute coming out of Virginia Tech. While I knew he could score, I didn’t know he had advanced footwork and scoring ability like this lethal stepback. He has three-point range, but also can get inside the paint and either finish himself or find shooters scattered along the three-point line. He even has flashed some post game as well. He put everything together against the Miami Heat, bringing his team back and dominating in the process. He has the length to guard just about any guard or wing. He’s also the Pelicans’ third guard in line behind Jrue Holiday and Lonzo Ball. Good look scoring on them. We’re going to really look back at how Nickeil fell all the way to 17. He was dominant in Vegas.

Jaxson Hayes, the eighth pick in the draft, played well in Summer League as well. He looked every bit the part of a Clint Capela/Jarrett Allen type of rim running, rim-protecting big. He also caught a body, the first of many. David Griffin looks to have nailed his first draft running the Pelicans, getting these two after trading the 4th pick acquired from the Lakers in the Anthony Davis trade.

Daniel Gafford C CHI: What I said about Hayes applies to Gafford as well. Gafford’s numbers at Arkansas after inexplicably being used improperly compared very well to that of Jaxson Hayes’ during his time at Texas. The gap between the two should not have been 30 spots. Gafford has been a monster on the glass and putbacks and done a good job protecting the rim. He was a steal and a great backup for the Bulls behind Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr.

Bruce Brown PG/SG DET: Bruce Brown made his hay defensively his rookie year for the Detroit Pistons. He worked on his offensive repertoire during Summer League, repeatedly showing plus playmaking working as the point guard. He even messed around and dropped a triple-double. He earned himself an even bigger role heading into his sophomore season.

Zhaire Smith SG PHI / Matisse Thybulle SF PHI: I’m lumping these two together because they both will likely have the same role next season for the gigantic Sixers. Any concern regarding whether Matisse Thybulle can defend in a man-to-man defense should be quelled. His defense translates. Zhaire Smith showed a scoring ability that will help him not be typecast as a one-dimensional offensive threat like Thybulle, who isn’t much of a threat with the ball in his hands. He is going to fly like Carol Danvers running with Ben Simmons in transition. Both Smith and Thybulle are long, tenacious defenders. Philly repeatedly got lit up by point guards last year. They now have three big guards to throw at them in these two and Josh Richardson, all likely having a size advantage. They also ran out of capable players in last year’s playoff run. These two should and likely will get minutes all throughout the year to prove they belong on that stage. Philadelphia is my favorite to boast the league’s best defense with Joel Embiid AND Al Horford protecting the middle. These guys will help on the outside. Good luck scoring against Philly next year.

Summary: Storybrooke has no library, and neither does Belle, not since the library where she worked in Boston discovered her past as an inpatient at a mental hospital. Taking her future into her own hands, Belle travels to Storybrooke where her intention is to open up the town library, but all does not go according to her plan. Obstacles and false starts, and diversion along very wrong pathways interrupt her journey toward fulfilling her dream, as well as taking her rightful place and becoming a part of the Storybrooke community.

Chapter 5 - Storybrook Calling

It had been a few weeks since ‘bookgate’ as both she and Ruby had taken to calling that moment of truth that both made and broke, and then remade their friendship, and still Belle had yet to find anything that even in the slightest of ways fulfilled her yearnings for all that she’d hoped for. She had attended several interviews, and endured as many ‘training’ seminars in modern library techniques in an attempt to make herself more desirable and appealing to potential employers. However, lurking in the back of her mind was the knowledge of her past, and even if other people weren’t taking much notice of it - for she was always honest on her applications - her confidence did, and in the worst of ways.

Then, late one morning, a foul day by all reckonings of the weather, as she was trying to dodge the rain on her way to meet Ruby for coffee, her phone rang. She ducked into the nearest store doorway so as not to get her phone waterlogged, and looked at the number. She didn’t recognise it at all.

Ordinarily, she would ignore any number she didn’t know, assuming that if it were important, the caller would leave a message, but something made her accept this one.

“Hello?” she said, her voice tentative.

“Hello. Is this Belle?”

“Yes,” she said cautiously. There was something about the man’s voice that she recognised, but she couldn’t quite place it. It was gruff, but also had a warm edge to it, and she knew she should know it.

“It’s Leroy… From Storybrooke? I don’t know if you--”

“Leroy!” Belle exclaimed, feeling so many different emotions at once that she wasn’t quite sure which to address first, so in the end she said, “I remember, yes of course. Is everything all right?”

“Well, see…” She could almost imagine Leroy running his hand up and down the back of his head as he spoke to her. The image made her smile in spite of the rain, and her dour mood to match. “...after you left, me and the boys got to thinking, and it seemed to us like you had your heart set opening up a library here, and this place needs a library, so we did a little digging.”

“Leroy,” Belle began, glancing at her watch, and realizing she was going to be late if she stayed in the doorway talking, Not wanting to be rude, she tried to find a way to end the call politely so she wouldn’t keep Ruby waiting. “You really didn’t have to do that just for me.”

“Hear me out, okay?” Leroy said, and Belle pursed her lips, having little choice but to head out in the rain and at least try to keep under the shop awnings.

“All right,” she said, “Go on.”

“I don’t know how much you had your heart set on it being a mobile library, but… it turns out that the actual library itself isn’t a municipal building after all.”

“It’s not?” Belle frowned in confusion, because one of the reasons that Mayor Mills had given her for not being able to open the library was because of the state of the building. Surely if it didn’t belong to the town, why would that be a bother to her?

“Surprised us too,” confessed Leroy.

“So, wha--” Belle began to ask, but Leroy wasn’t yet done with his explanation so, while Belle hurriedly side stepped to avoid getting suddenly soaked by a curtain of water streaming from the broken canopy of a baker’s shop, he continued.

“So we did a little more digging, and it took us a couple of weeks, but,” he said, and Belle pressed her phone to her ear a little more so that she could be sure to hear him as she neared the edge of the sidewalk, and saw Ruby waving to her from the Starbucks across the road. She tried to concentrate on Leroy’s words and on crossing safely both at the same time but it wasn’t easy so she lost some of the string of words coming from the gruff voice on her phone as she waited for a gap in the traffic, so that she could dash across and finally get out of the rain once and for all. She spied an opening in the steady stream of cars and started to half walk, half trot, finally able to tune back in to what Leroy was saying. “...got to the bottom of it, and with a little pushing the right buttons, and a few politely spoken words in the right ears, well… we pooled our cash together and... you got yourself a library, sister!”

Leroy’s words came crashing over her and stopped her in her tracks, just as if a heavy truck had driven at speed through a puddle and sprayed her with freezing water.

“Wait, what?!” she said, not quite believing what she’d just heard, and completely oblivious to the fact that she’d stopped walking right in the middle of the road, or that the rain was now coming down faster than ever, right on her exposed head.

“Yep,” Leroy said, his surprising happiness - as he’d always struck Belle as such a surly man - bubbling over even down the phone. “Deposit and first month’s rent is all paid up, and we figure once you’re in there, and get everything up and running, the mayor will have no choice but to pay your salary, given that it was the building costs she was objecting to.”

“Wait,” Belle said again, and at the sound of a car horn, far too close for comfort, raised an apologetic hand to the driver she was delaying and as soon as she could, hurried to the other side of the street asking, “You guys did this?”

“Of course we did,” Leroy said, “and we’d do it again, twice over, if we had to. We know you’re good for it.”

“Leroy, that’s…” Belle broke off with a joyful laugh, no longer caring about the rain or what people might think of her sudden outpouring a celebratory laughter. “That’s wonderful… oh, my God, I could kiss you!”

She could almost hear Leroy blush on the other end of the phone. “Just get yourself up here, Sister.” he told her. “You have a library to reopen.”

Belle quickly said her goodbyes, promising to head to Storybrooke as soon as she could and then slipped the phone into her pocket, still laughing half in merriment and half in disbelief. Reaching Ruby, she threw her arms around her friend and practically pulled her down to the ground, so fierce and sudden was her hug.

“Belle, what the fuck?!” Ruby said, pushing her away. “You’re soaking wet, and what’s with stopping in the middle of the street like that. You’ll go and get yourself killed and--”

“I did it!” she exclaimed, and then rapidly correcting herself, but speaking so quickly she doubted anyone would follow her anyway, added, “Well, technically they did it, but they did it for me, and they need me, and now I have somewhere to go, and a job and… and a library!”

“What are you talking about?” Ruby asked, frowning and almost pushing Belle inside the Starbucks and ahead of her to order coffee before she caught her death of cold.

“Leroy, and the other guys… in Storybrooke,” she said and as they waited their turn in line for the ordering counter, Belle explained to Ruby what was going on. They had their coffee and were moving to find a place to sit and drink by the time Belle finished her excited retelling of it all.

“So, you’re telling me,” Ruby said as she slipped into a seat opposite Belle, “that a bunch of strange guys in a place you’ve visited once paid for the lease of a library building… for you… and you don’t see anything wrong with this scenario?”

“Well, I’ll pay them back,” Belle said, with a frown, not at all sure what Ruby was getting at, “Of course, I will.”

“Fuck, Belle,” Ruby shook her head, and sighed out a breath. “You’re a total lunatic!”

“No,” Belle said firmly as she lifted her coffee cup to her lips, which for the first time in a long time were upturned in a smile. “I am a librarian.”
