Here is the first comic of my surplus hashira au!
Tomioka, who isn't the water pillar, is accompanying the Kamado siblings to master Urokodaki. He saw potential in Nezuko like in canon and wrote to Kanae, who immediately left to meet up with them. Tomioka becomes an unofficial caretaker for them, spending much more time with them than in canon, due to not being as busy and feeling a need to personally ensure that nothing bad happens (like Nezuko eating a human).

Shinobu and Uzui in the hashira surplus au! Kanae is still alive, so Shinobu spends a while in her plain white haori, much to Uzui's disappointment. She'd been meaning to get a custom one for a while but it jumped up her priority list after this.

Here's a typical Giyu and Shinobu interaction in the hashira surplus au! They're waiting for the pillar meeting to end and Shinobu has her favourite source of entertainment: bothering the boring guy

Sanemi, somewhat reluctantly: they're not hashira but they're as strong as us
Tengen: what, these clowns?

How the various older siblings react to their younger sibling wanting to join the corps:
Tumblr media
Not shown: Rengoku, Kanae and Tsutako gaping at Shinazugawa in complete shock
Bonus Mitsuri: we don't know how she'd react in canon, but I like to think that she'd be excited to work with them in training and show them the ropes but be very protective on missions (with just a tocuh of showing off)
Bonus Yuichiro: over my dead body

In this fix it au, the main changes begin precanon as Sabito, Tsutako (Tomioka's sister) and Kanae don't die. Instead, Sabito and Kanae are hashira, so they take the place of Shinobu and Tomioka, leading to a "hashira surplus" and a ripple effect throughout canon events.

Giyu and Shinazugawa in canon vs in the hashira surplus au!! I find the difference in dynamic really funny.
Canon Shinazugawa: stop saying you're better than us, jackass
Hashira surplus Shinazugawa: stop saying you're not as good as us, idiot
Shinazugawa is one of the hashira who has gone on a mission with/ was sent as backup for Giyu, so he has seen first hand how strong he is. He respects him for not kicking up a fuss about his rank (unlike Shinobu) but cannot stand Giyu's tendency to dismiss his talents. He thinks it's rude.

The start of the mugen train arc in the hahsira surplus au!
They've only just gotten here and Tanjiro has already lost 5 years off his life from stress. The context for why Sabito hates Tanjiro can be found here.
When lower moon one attacks, Rengoku initially suggests the same roles as in the movie (him, Zenitsu and Nezuko saving people on the train while Tanjiro, Inosuke and Sabito deal with the demon) but Sabito cuts in and "suggests" that Nezuko should help him deal with the demon instead (effectively swapping Nezuko and Insokue's roles). Especially when there is the threat of a demon, as there might be blood shed, Sabito wants to keep them in his sight. He is taking no chances for Nezuko to attack a person, even if she resisted in the pillar meeting. The stakes are too high for that.
He gains some respect for her when she uses her blood demon art to protect him and Tanjiro from the eyes that put them to sleep. He gains a lot of respect for Tanjiro when he finds out how he escaped the dream land. Sabito on the other hand is able to wake up quite easily, as his peaceful dream feels so wrong because of Giyuu and Urokodaki's recent betrayal and his unease.
Between them, lower moon one isn't really a threat, but upper moon three might still be a problem...

The water + mist pillars in the surplus hashira au!!
In this au, Sabito suffered from memory loss after the demon attack which killed his parents. This was also when he got his scar. Due to a combination of head injury and trauma, his memories of his life before the injury are inaccessible to him. This didn't affect his ability to form new memories, but left him very disoritentated and on guard when he met Urokodaki. As the first person he encountered after the attack, he initially suspected Urokodaki but had to rely on him to treat his wounds. It took time for him to settle in and he only really started to trust Urokodaki when he found and took in Tomioka.
They start training a couple months later, when they've recovered and Tomioka asks about the unnatural "creature" that killed his sister. Urokodaki wasn't initially planning on telling them about demons (due to not wanting to send anyone else to die in final selection) but couldn't lie to them.
While some details return to him over time, mostly those from long before the attack, Sabito never fully recovers. He feels guilty for forgetting his biological family and overcompensates by loudly declaring that Urokodaki and Giyuu are his family. He doesn't remember how he got his scar at all. He's not self conscious about its appearance but hates when people try to ask what happened. When Muichiro regains his memories, Sabito is happy for him.
Sabito's memory loss is loosely based on focal retrograde amnesia, which is described by wikipedia as follows: "With focal RA, the details of a patient's life prior to amnesia onset can be reintroduced, but they are unable to recall how they perceived the experience."

surplus hashira question so if giyuu is not sabito’s tsuguko then who is?
Tumblr media
Someone: Do you have a tsuguko?
Sabito, laughing: Who needs a tsuguko when you have him?
Thank you for the ask anon!! Basically, in the hashira surplus au, Giyuu is not Sabito's tsuguko because they grew in parallel to each other. I headcannon that Urokodaki found Sabito first and in a better state (mentally, physically, emotionally) so he had a head start if you will on Giyuu. As a result, even if they both increased in the ranks at more or less a similar pace (I do think Sabito improved faster, but not by thaaat much) so there was never a huge gap in skill for them. Sabito was established consistently as better, but never enough that he felt like he could actively teach or mentor Giyuu. As a result, when he became a pillar, he didn't take on Giyuu as a tsuguko.
Sabito does often train young water breath users. He finds it fun and loves their awestruck expressions. He doesn't look down on anyone in the corps and rarely turns people down when he has time, so lots of young slayers seek him out. When they ask about being a tsukugo, this is his response.
Giyuu isn't his tsuguko because (despite what Giyuu believes), Sabito doesn't have much he could even teach him. They have both made water breathing their own and while they sometimes try to mimic each other's styles, it is ineffective at making them stronger. However, Giyuu is unmistakeably the next strongest water breath user, so everyone knows that if Sabito were to fall, Giyuu would be his replacement.

Here is how Sabito views the other pillars in the hashira surplus au!! Click here for how Kanae views the other pillars and here for the au masterpost
Sabito enjoys the company of Rengoku and Mitsuri the most, as they are both very kind and genuine. For him, how people treat those in the ranks below is vital in judgement of character. They're good people and he doesn't mind their eccentric natures at all. If he were able to spend time with her and get to know her, he would like Kanae as well as she shares this trait, even if she is less outgoing than the others.
On the flip side, Iguro, Uzui and Sanemi urk him due to their flippant disregard for those in the ranks below. To him, anyone just in the corps is fighting the fight and should be respected. As he is familiar with Giyu's hashira level technique, he also knows very well that the ranks aren't a perfect system for comparing slayers in the first place. Precanon, this doesn't come up very often though. It mostly led to his eye twitching in a meeting when someone phrases something too harshly. This is a point of tension in the meeting after spider mountain (as in canon, Murata notices that the hashira are unimpressed with the decline in quality of slayers) but this is overshadowed by the arguments about Nezuko and what to do with Giyu, who let a demon live (so should be executed?) but killed a moon effortlessly (so should be promoted? can they even do that with nine pillars already?).

In the Hashira surplus au what is kanae’s relationship like with the other pillars we know she got along with sanemi in canon but i am interested in how she interacts with the others
Hello!! Thank you so much for this ask - I love talking about the hashira surplus au and making a pillar opinion sheet was really fun :D
Tumblr media
Kanae's probably closest with Sanemi and Mitsuri and seeks out their company when she can. As a doctor and a hashira, she is one of the busiest characters, so she doesn't hang out with everyone much. She also spends a lot of her free time with Shinobu and Nezuko (and by extension, Tanjirou and Giyuu).
I'll also make a pillar opinion sheet for Sabito soon!!

Hashira Surplus Au Question- We know that in canon Sanemi would check up on Shinobu because she was Kanae’s little sister(he said this on his opinion on the other hashira page) but does he do it in this Au since Kanae is still alive or does he just get updates about her through Kanae?
ooh anon thank you for such an interesting question!
I think sanemi is still invested in her wellbeing (and discretely checks in when he can), but they have a different dynamic. For one, Shinobu acts differently as Kanae is still alive. This also means they actually have a reason to interact sometimes (other than when he's in the hospital). But I think it would be quite awkward because Shinobu wants to be a pillar and Sanemi is one of the most vocal when it comes to arguing against it. More on that here.
However, I think they both respect each others' skills enormously and want to get along for Kanae's sake. Kanae notices this and is always very happy when they do, so they have a mutual begrudging tolerance.

What do the other pillars think of Kanae?
Tumblr media
In an unsurprising turn of events, this took me a while to answer, but thank you for the ask!! I really liked making this one :3
Like in canon, Kanae is much admired and liked by the rest in the corps, including her fellow hashira. She isn't able to spend much time with them due to her missions and responsibilities as a doctor (and head of the butterfly mansion), but she has made a positive impression over the years.
Obanai was both skeptical when they first met, as he was suspicious of how nice she seemed. With time, he learnt that it was genuine, but still found her presence slightly uncomfortable for a while, due to his background.
Similarly, Muichiro was initially offended with being treated gently, as he thought she was treating him like a child due to his age and injury (memory loss, that she diagnosed). He also realised that her gentle and kind manner was genuine.
She truly doesn't understand why you would ever want to act differently. This principle is something she shares with Rengoku, and they get along quite well despite differing temperaments. He, Uzui, Misturi and Sabito have been trying to convince her to join their sparring events for a while, but she hasn't been able to make it yet. Uzui really wants her to join because he secretly wants to see what she's like when backed into a corner (like when losing a match).

Sabito and Rengoku in the mungen train arc in the hashira surplus au!! Even with two hashira, upper moon three is quite the threat...
Not wanting Sabito to also have to commit seppuku if Nezuko eats someone, Giyuu and Urokodaki agree to not tell him about Tanjiro and Nezuko, who have had to hide more than once. As a result, Sabito doesn't know about Nezuko until the pillar meeting after Tanjiro visits spider mountain. He is not taking it well that those closest to him a) lied to him and hid something so important for 2 years and b) are willing to commit seppuku if Nezuko eats a human (which he worries is very likely).
So he asigns himself to their mission to be able to observe the demon who may ruin his life. Rengoku is perfectly fine with this, but Tanjiro feels like he's walking on eggshells. While it's great to have two hashira on this mission, but Sabito's had the rug pulled out from under him and is horribly off his game...

Question about Hashira surplus au: Is Makomo still alive? If Sabito survived she could also live.
It would be nice for her to live if you want t have Tanjiro get a revenge kill on Hands Demon (aside from killing 10 other students) maybe have Makomo lose an arm and/or leg, and live with Urodoraki. Also, the idea of Makomo using Tanjiro as a punching bag with only one hand is hilarious.
Hello!! Thank you so much for the ask :D
Unfortunately, Makomo is not alive in this au. She does lose her life to the hand demon BUT she is also the reason Sabito survives in this au in the first place:
Tumblr media
Makomo has caught glimpses of Sabito and Giyu before when she visits the mountain. She hasn't been able to speak to either of them before (they didn't find the clearing) but she is able to recognise them. In the hashira surplus au, Makomo manages to find Giyu in final selection. He initially thinks he's hallucinating from a combination of the blood loss + head injury, but the fear of losing Sabito is enough for him to get back clumsily on his feet. To look for Sabito, he leaves Murata, who is unable to follow him due to looking after other injured people.
This leads to Giyu finding Sabito in the middle of fighting the hand demon, just before his sword breaks. His sudden appearance shocked both Sabito and the hand demon enough that Sabito misses its neck and instead slices down its torso. Between the two of them, they are just able to defeat the hand demon. As it's turning to ashes, Giyu spots Makomo again, who says "thank you" before vanishing, though he couldn't hear her and had to read her lips. Before he can ask if Sabito also saw her, he passes out and only wakes up after final selection has ended, convinced that she was some sort of dream.
This means that from all of Urokodaki's students, only Giyu, Sabito and Tanjiro survive. Urokodaki believes that the reason Giyu and Sabito survived is because they had each other, which is not untrue, but Makomo's intervention was also a key factor.
So as the hand demon is already dead, Tanjiro doesn't end up fighting it and has a much easier final selection than everyone else. This confuses both him and Urokodaki, but they are pleasantly surprised. He also doesn't get to train with any ghosts but receives pointers from Giyu instead. As a result, Makomo doesn't get to meet Tanjiro in this au, but the image of her gently bullying him into proper form without being able to use forms herself is funny :P. I actually really recommend this post by @demonslayedher for a Makomo lives au!
