Lets start the year off right, shall we?
Remember when action movies were about the action, badass characters, tough guys with a heart of gold, actual engaging action?
Watching "Hardboiled" with a modern perspective feels really weird, it's like looking into an alternate reality where movies used to be fun, and real. Remember fun? Remember real?
You may have noticed I'm not describing the plot, because it almost doesn't matter. What matters are the characters (Detective Tequila is my crush shut up), their personal arcs, and the relationships between each other. That's why the action is so good, because you care for everyone!
We need more movies like this.

Whenever I hardboil an egg now my mental voice says Hard…boiled! in the same tone of voice as the Hardboiled podcast. You don’t know about the Hardboiled podcast? Sit tight.
Butch/Femme noir detectives in old Edmonton btw. The femme takes a while to realize she loves women. There’s also a recurring hot evil lady.
My favorite episode is #4.
(Episode summary: When Jack is hired to track down a beautiful young Chinese immigrant, she discovers that not only is the woman missing, but that she apparently never existed.)
One thing I really love about this podcast is its coherence. It does “funny old time radio show” perfectly but also manages to tell stories about people that sincerely move my heart, and it never feels like either goal is ever in conflict.
The podcast also shows a lot of loving and sensitive research into the lives of Chinese, Métis, Black and other people living in the 1930s, and avoids the earnest-but-clumsy pitfalls that diverse shows by white writers sometimes fall into.
Hardboiled is a lot of fun, and the actors are grand. The guy who plays Primula Dell, the rich old unmarried larger-than-life society dame, is an absolute treasure and sounds like he’s having a BALL.
For the sake of full disclosure, a dear friend worked on Hardboiled, but it’s such a delight of a podcast that I’d recommend it equally as enthusiastically if she hadn’t.
Please give it a listen! It’s only one season.

Hunter Black Page 130 - I'll Be Damned
What I Said Back Then: "If it isn’t obvious, that is NOT the Cur. Hunter would not be holding himself back if it was the Cur."
What I'm Saying Now: You know, I've become aware that Hunter has mellowed out some over the years. Some of what we're doing in the comic now is kind of about that, actually.
