My boy is gonna be 4 years old this fall. He is currently obsessed with the Transformers and Ben10. We watch either property every fucking day. The concepts of both have, shockingly, begun to wear a tad thin for me.
Watching Ben10 with him the other day, I noticed an episode that was written by Duncan Rouleau. He’s apparently part of the Man of Action studio of artists. The same artist’s studio that Dave Johnson is from.
Anyways. Metal Men. 1960s DC is my JAM. Science heroes, the atomic knights, challengers, etc. That shit rocks. DC is weirdly at its best when it’s… weird. The best Superman books are when he’s the straight man in a humor book. The silver age. The best Shazam books are when it’s like, Billy versus the evil caterpillar wizards from Mars.
Metal Men is the kind of book that a dorky chemistry teacher from Nowhere, Wisconsin in 1957 would write to teach his students the periodic table. And it works. It fucking works. But even weirder, it only really clicks when the writer and artist are the same guy. No joke. The artist has to be the writer for that book. It’s almost unique in that sense. Plastic Man is very similar. The visuals and the narrative have to be perfectly in sync, or they have to be created by the same person. I cannot explain it beyond that. You kind of need to read multiple versions to get what I’m saying.
I am gonna go ahead and recommend this run. It was a lot of fun. Duncan wrote and drew the whole thing, and it was a natural fit for him.
