Even More ASOUE Characters (Still The Adults)
And the Beatles Songs I Can't Help But Associate Them With, Part Two.
Montgomery 'Monty' Montgomery, Penny Lane (~Penny Lane there is a barber showing photographs/Of every head he's had the pleasure to know/And all the people that come and go/Stop and say, "Hello"~)
Josephine Anwhistle, Octopus's Garden (~We would be so happy you and me/No one there to tell us what to do/I'd like to be under the sea/In an octopus' garden with you~)
Isaac 'Ike' Anwhistle, Here Comes the Sun (~Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces/Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here~)
Gregor Anwhistle, Strawberry Fields Forever (~Let me take you down/'Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields/Nothing is real/And nothing to get hung about/Strawberry Fields Forever~)
Hector, Blackbird (~Blackbird singing in the dead of night/Take these broken wings and learn to fly/All your life/You were only waiting for this moment to arise~)
Madame Lulu, Tomorrow Never Knows (~Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream/It is not dying, it is not dying/Lay down all thoughts, surrender to the void/It is shining, it is shining~)
Olivia Caliban, I'm Only Sleeping (~Keeping an eye on the world going by my window/Taking my time/Lying there and staring at the ceiling/Waiting for a sleepy feeling~)
R the Duchess of Winnipeg, Boys^ as cover by The Beatles [~My girl says when I kiss her lips/Get a thrill through her fingertips] + I Want to Hold Your Hand* (~Oh please, say to me/You'll let me be your man/And please, say to me/You'll let me hold your hand/You'll let me hold your hand/I want to hold your hand~)
^Originally a song by The Shirelles about how a girl feels about boys, I picked the cover version for R because given the irony about a man (Ringo, who sings the cover) singing about boys, I feel there's more irony by associating the cover with R, an implied canon lesbian, by changing the context of the cover: a woman who loves women 'singing' about the boys her lover dated/kissed before.
*Given that a cover version of I Want to Hold Your Hand appears in the movie Across the Universe (2007) with change of context being about a female's singer unrequited love for her female friend who is straight, I couldn't help myself but associate the song with R.
Captain Widdershins, The Fool on the Hill (~Day after day/Alone on a hill/The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still/But nobody wants to know him/They can see that he's just a fool/And he never gives an answer~) + (~But the fool on the hill sees the sun going down/And the eyes in his head see the world spinning 'round~)
Fernald, Hey Jude (~And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain/Don't carry the world upon your shoulders/For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool/By making his world a little colder) + (~Hey Jude, don't make it bad/Take a sad song and make it better/Remember to let her under your skin/Then you'll begin to make it/Better, better, better, better, better, better, oh!~)

What would've happened if Gregor Anwhistle didn't make the Medusoid Mycelium and it's cures? (NCT)
Easy-peasy theory this time, not at all like a usual Snicket analysis.
NOTHING!
Nothing would've happened if Gregor Anwhistle didn't make the Medusoid Mycelium!:
If the Medusoid Mycelium doesn't exist, neither does it's cures - why cure something that doesn't exist? You don't need to be a marine researcher to know that one...
If:
The Medusoid Mycelium
The Hybrid
don't exist, NEITHER DOES THE CRUEL, THEORIST-VEXATING SUGAR BOWL!
And if the sugar bowl (grr...) doesn't exist, NEITHER DOES THE SCHISM! HURRAH!
So, what would've happened?
Everyone gets along.
Olaf and Kit (maybe) have a child.
Lemony doesn't need to go on the run, because Beatrice would never have thrown the poison dart at Olaf's father, intended for Esmé.
Lemony and Beatrice actually get married, and raise the Baudelaires Snickets in a quiet and safe world.
Georgina and Monty might've been a thing (?!), as the couples (except Larry and Lemony) pictured:
Tumblr media
6. (maybe at some point in the future of this alternate canon) The Quagmires and the Snickets become in-laws.
Yours assuredly, for once,

the anwhistles:
the beloved ike
And none of the Baudelaires would ever meet some of the organization's most beloved volunteers, including the mechanical instructor C. M. Kornbluth, and Dr. Isaac Anwhistle, whom everyone called Ike, and the brave volunteer who tossed the sugar bowl out the kitchen window so it would not be destroyed in the blaze, and watched it float away on one of the tributaries of the Stricken Stream.
-- lemony snicket’s narration
the volatile gregor
The poisonous fungus you insist on cultivating in the grotto will bring grim consequences for all of us. Our factory at Lousy Lane can provide some dilution of the mycelium's destructive respiratory capabilities, and you assure me that the mycelium grows best in small, enclosed spaces, but this is of little comfort. One mistake, Gregor, and your entire facility would have to be abandoned. Please, do not become the thing you dread most by adopting the destructive tactic of our most villainous enemies: playing with fire.
-- kit snicket’s letter in tgg
the mysterious H
[?]

one beloved volunteer, one volatile and considered a threat by the vfd, and one mysterious and unknown .................  does that remind anyone else of the denouements, one volunteer, the who belongs in the vfd, and one firestarter, the who turned against vfd and considered a threat by the vfd, and one mysterious and unknown urban legend

So this is really random, and no one asked for this, but have my nationality headcanons for a whole load of asoue/atwq characters.?? No real explanation for these hcs, it's just how I imagine the characters ! :) (might throw in some extra hcs along the way because why not.)
P.S I'm quite fascinated by the history of the colonisation of America and the patterns of immigration that occurred thereafter, which is partially why I'm making this post. However, I'm not American and have never received actual American education so I'm sorry if I am miseducated in any regard.
Tumblr media
Sugar bowl gen
Esmé Squalor is British/Syrian
HC: she is a first generation immigrant to the USA when the events of the books take place. Her mother was Syrian and her father British. She has a twin brother who disagreed with her involvement in VFD and left the USA to go back to England once they were of age. She hasn't seen him since they were teenagers.
Jerome Squalor is British-American
HC: His parents immigrated to the USA from England before he was born.
Bertrand Baudelaire is French
HC: He is a first-generation immigrant and went to the USA on his own after the death of his parents.
Beatrice Baudelaire is American
HC: By the time she was born, her family had been in the USA for many generations. Some British and Irish ancestry.
The Snicket siblings are Chinese-American
HC: the Snicket siblings are second-generation immigrants to the USA. Both of their parents were Chinese.
Mrs (headcanoned first name Marzia) Quagmire is Italian-American
HC: she is a second generation immigrant. She grew up in a household that primarily spoke Italian.
Mr (headcanoned first name William) Quagmire is American
HC: like Bea, his family had been in the USA for many generations before his birth. British and Dutch ancestry.
Count Olaf is German-American
HC: Olaf is a second or third generation immigrant. His family were very wealthy but went to ruin and ran away to the USA. He still insists on keeping his ancestral title despite this.
Montgomery Montgomery is Pakistani-American
HC: Monty is a second-gen immigrant. He had three siblings who all moved across the USA once of age, but he made an effort to keep in touch with them and their extended family in Pakistan.
Ellington Feint is Chinese-American
HC: Ellington is a second-gen immigrant. Her father was American with British ancestry and her mother was a first-gen Chinese immigrant.
Captain (headcanoned first name Rory) Widdershins is Irish-American
HC: a third-gen immigrant who grew up very disconnected from his heritage due to being in the foster system.
Fernald "Widdershins" is Moroccan/American
HC: him and his sister Fiona (and theorised sister Friday) had an American mother and Moroccan father. Their father left before they were born and mother left when Fiona was young, so they were raised by Widdershins. They know very little about their heritage.
Moxie Mallahan is American
HC: her family had been in the USA for many generations before her birth. Distant British and Dutch ancestry.
Arthur Poe is American
HC: Poe and his wife both had generations of family in the USA. He has some Dutch ancestry.
Josephine Anwhistle is American
HC: her family had also been in the USA for many generations. She had distant Irish ancestry. She made effort to reconnect with her ancestry in some regards.
Ike Anwhistle is American
HC: Ike, too, had family for generations in the USA. Canonically in the books, he is the second cousin of one of the Baudelaire parents (I hc him on Bea's side of the family) so in my headcanon, his ancestry is British/Irish. His brother, Gregor, is obviously the same.
The Denouement triplets are American
HC: the triplets are third-generation immigrants with British and Dutch ancestry. Mother's side British and father's side Dutch. There had been plans to raise the triplets in England, but a mysterious friend of their mother convinced them to stay in the USA for reasons unknown...
Tumblr media
Unfortunate Gen
The Baudelaire children are French-American
HC: Bea is American and Bertrand French, as stated above. They grew up speaking both languages fluently.
The Quagmire triplets are Italian-American
HC: their mother is Italian and their father American. Their mother and her parents made sure they grew up speaking Italian.
Fiona Widdershins is American/Moroccan
HC: As stated with Fernald above, her biological father was Moroccan, although her and Fernald never knew him nor that they were Moroccan.
Carmelita Spats is Dutch-American
HC: Carmelita is a fourth-generation immigrant and she has little connection to her ancestry due to not being in contact with her family anymore.
Beatrice Baudelaire II is Chinese-American
HC: as Kit is her mother, she has her ancestry, of course. I am personally a fan of the theory that Olaf is her father, not Dewey, so in this post, we'll say that his ancestry plays here too...
Ben (Violet's friend) is American
HC: Ben is American with British and Native American ancestry.
Well, I've probably missed about a million characters, but there it is ! This is a super random post but I just felt like I might as well post some headcanons for the hell of it. Always love to hear other people's headcanons for Snicketverse characters. Thanks if you read all the way to the end, I love you

asoue au where gregor anwhistle is alive and the stepfather of fernald and fiona, part two:
all while hector and widdershins are living together in the hinterlands in peace (peaceful as it can be until a certain event), the organization is in disarray. a family is in disarray.
the organization knows ishmael is alive given gregor's testimony, but no one knows where he could be. all that they know from gregor is that he's out there in the ocean in a bathyscaphe. some speculate ishmael eventually died for one can't travel too far and too long in a bathyscaphe (it's not a submarine, after all), while other speculate given the man's character, found a way to survive.
gregor other's brother ike, and his wife josephine, are ridden with guilty for partly causing the death of frigga, and widdershins. never would they assume their warning would have lead to the frigga getting shot. they never thought gregor's volatility would have him killing widdershins without any hesitation. the two deaths had ike and josephine entering retirement in the organization, limiting their contact with gregor to letters, until they died by leeches. not together, but leeches did killed them both.
kit snicket, while not losing her reputation in the organization (as with the others involve), slowly loses her other relationships as a result of the fire, especially with regards to widdershins' death. she loses ike and josephine, for like the couple themselves, holds them partly responsible for widdershins' death. kit loses betrand and beatrice, for their involvement in the volatile fungus deportation project has her seeing them as accomplices. kit loses her twin, after he writes an article that blames the boy widdershins loved as his own, as the one who destroyed anwhistle aquatic, and as widdershins' killer.
gregor himself goes through the ringer. he is unable to regain funding for a second attempt of the volatile fungus deportation project. the organization doesn't want to deal with another schism within schism. while gregor was offered by the organization to work in other less deadly projects, he instead decided to take over as captain of the queequeg, for the organization plan to turn it into scrap metal.
gregor doesn't mourn the lost of his project. he only mourns his wife, and widdershins. especially widdershins. it's why gregor become a captain, to save the queequeg, the one thing left of widdershins.
everyone mourns over frigga, but not many mourn over widdershins. much of the organization pretends he never existed, partly due to his violent death is something they don't want to think about again, but mostly because they're finally able to remove the 'leech outsider' who 'wormed' his way into the organization.
and fernald is disguised by them all, especially by gregor.
fernald always respected gregor, but never liked him. gregor never did anything to earn the teenager's ire though, which is why he didn't make complaints or objected to his mother's decision to date him. but now though, fernald has every reason to spite the man.
gregor allowed mom to transform into a different woman, and let her die. she became a woman who cared for work, and only work. not her family, her two children. gregor killed widdershins, the man who took care of fernald as a child, who tutored fernald like a chaperone. fernald lost the man he saw as a brother, as family.
the lost of his mother and widdershins has fernald one night lashing out at gregor. fernald yells at gregor for everything, and without any interruptions. fernald was able to let his feelings out at long last. and at the end...gregor told fernald to get out. that to take his things, and to never come back. and fernald does so without hesitation, crying his eyes out a week later, realizing he doomed fiona, and himself. he cries in anger as he read a newspaper article that brought back widdershins into the world, at the cost of everything he holds dear.
and it's fernald's anger at gregor does he make the decision to switch sides. it came to be after kit went to fernald in hopes to calm him down from reading her brother's article. and she did so, sort of. fernald stop his crying, but he was still angry, and told kit he wanted to get back at gregor by doing the one thing that would make him upset.
kit in horror, reminded fernald that he ought to be careful in how to spite his stepfather, for the one person who would be disappointed by fernald's actions, would be widdershins. and fernald told kit that he's doing it because of widdershins, that if the man was alive, fernald wouldn't thinking it in the first place.
and kit, despite knowing it's the wrong decision, lets fernald go. kit recognizes she is unable to change the path he's going, but accepts it. all she can do is wish him good luck and tells him that the next time they meet, they will be enemies. and fernald tells kit thank you, and makes her promise to watch his sister, if she can. fernald fears fiona's life will not be easy under gregor's care.
fernald's fears while not correct, also isn't wrong. gregor takes care of fiona; he feeds her, provides her clothes, and make sure she gets the best education possible, but he makes no attempts to emotionally connect with her. gregor refers to fiona as his daughter, but one can tell he doesn't view her as such. they can tell by his voice, how hollow it is, how dull his eyes are as he speaks the word.
once fiona gets old enough, she learns of her mother. she learns from her father that her mother died in a fire, and he failed to save here. it was a fire that her brother fernald blames gregor for, and ran away from home because the grief overtook him, for seeing fiona had the boy being painfully reminded of that night.
fiona also learns, all by herself, that her father is hiding something. some things are more obvious than others. her father's attempt to hide his...disconnection with her, is one she noticed at five, after he didn't appear on her birthday, only sending a gift from the mail. from that day onward, fiona knows her father is a father in everything but spirit, acting the motions of a father, but not letting himself be one. fiona wishes he could call him anything but that, but she feels oblige. he is the only family she has left. she doesn't want to lose him.
another thing fiona learns over time, is that her father is lying about being a submarine captain. fiona after visiting a few submarines with kit snicket -kit is the only volunteer willing to take fiona to other organization submarines- sees how her father isn't as skilled at the controls, which has fiona deciding to learn how to be a captain. it's something fiona can see kit is happy about, knowing the queequeg is in good hands at long last.
fiona learns how her father was very likely a scientist, after one day at the bookstore, when he buys three expensive trace fossils books, and she buys her first mycology book. her father upon seeing her book, has a light in his eyes, and spirit in his voice as he tells fiona about mycology, and how it's a dangerous field to study in, and to take caution, almost as if he was speaking from experience.
most importantly, fiona after some digging of the library, learns of the person who was very likely, the true captain of the queequeg. she finds the hidden poetry books, improper and proper dieting books, and the works of herman melville. one work in particular, moby dick, looks like it was read many times. pages are ready to fall out, and there are light pencil underlines in certain passages and of certain names.
one name in particular stands out to fiona. queequeg. fiona, after finally finishing her reading of moby dick, sees why the reader like queequeg, enough to name a submarine after him.
and it's moby dick does fiona sees how her father was once truly happy. inside the book is a photograph tuck away. it's a photograph of her father smiling, alongside her uncle ike and aunt josephine, and two men she doesn't recognized. one man had the luck of being in the middle, and the photo was crease so many times, his face is now gone. the other man's face is clear as day, but there's nothing that gives away who he is. the only standout is that the man has a mustache, and it curls upward almost like a parenthesis.
fiona keeps that photograph on her, knowing well that her father will never look through the book again. it's hiding away for a reason, like another photograph that is of her family at lake lachrymose. fiona would like to give the photo to kit in hopes the woman would identity the unknown men, but kit was soon assigned to libraries, taxis, and the hotel denouement.
fiona never told anyone about the photo. not even as the baudelaires came aboard the queequeg, fiona couldn't find it in herself to tell her third cousins of it. third cousins who didn't know of her existence until now, and of her father. and fiona isn't shock that aunt josephine never talked about her extended family (uncle ike and aunt josephine stop communicating with her father when fiona was a toddler, for reasons she still doesn't understand).
fiona kept it to herself as they were in the grotto, discussing a letter by kit to her father, who is now confirm a scientist, and not a submarine captain at all. fiona kept it to herself as the children came back aboard to an empty submarine, with only a note from her father, her stepfather, that he must depart on a vfd escort mission, entrusting fiona to be the new captain.
fiona kept it to herself as she struggles between trying to get the queequeg moving or to go find a cure for sunny, who when inside the grotto, got infected by the mycelium. fiona kept the photograph hidden as she and the baudelaires were thrown into the brig by count olaf, and as fiona reunited with her brother. fiona didn't dare show fernald the photo right then and there, even after learning of the deceased captain widdershins, the true owner of the queequeg who fernald was blame for killing upon setting the anwhistle aquatic fire, even though fernald wasn't there at all.
everything she learned in the brig was too much to show the photo. fiona eventually showed the photo to the baudelaires, after they showed her the photo of her family. seeing that photo had fiona snapping, telling them that her stepfather never cared about her and her brother, that he was never happy with her, that he was happy when single, when the true captain of the queequeg was alive.
and showing the photo at last to the baudelaires gave a reaction fiona wasn't expecting. the baudelaires told her the man in the photograph, the one with the mustache, is still alive. that his name is veasna heng, and that he's in a self-sustaining hot air mobile home with hector, the village of fowl devotee's handyman, taking care of duncan and isadora quagmire.
hearing those words gave fiona pause. it was a pause that granted the baudelaires the chance to convince fiona to let them go, as well as giving her the fungus inside sunny's helmet. and fiona agreed, thanking them for everything, the good and the bad.
fiona, upon reuniting with fernald, shows him the photograph, and what the baudelaires told her. and with a smile on his face, fernald asked her if she would be okay with a change of plan; instead of finding gregor, they should find the man in the photo, widdershins.
and fiona, without any hesitation, agrees to the change. while the change plan still oddly enough, lead to them finding gregor, it was not him who they ran towards though.
they instead ran towards widdershins.
(funny thing is, fiona feel it's how it's supposed to be)

Family Tree Headcanons
I’m the kind of person who often holds multiple contradictory headcanons because I like exploring possibilities. Within the space of this blog, I use headcanons for some internal consistency, but even so, I treat threads as independent and may play with different headcanons thread to thread. That being said, I wanted to lay out a ‘default’ for this blog/my own writing regarding the Snicket family tree.
ABC Generation The family tree starts here. This could mean C was the first Snicket to join VFD, much as R was the latest in a long line of duchesses, but was the first VFD member. But Lemony mentions in EE that he learned the code from his grandfather, who learned it in turn for at least four generations (two grandfathers) back. And the map of the city which includes “sketches of costumes” and VFD tunnels, has had “twelve previous owners”. Whether or not it was formally VFD, Snickets have been involved in codes and conspiracies for way before ABC.
I personally headcanon ABC as brothers, possibly identical triplets (similar to the Denouements. Twins/triplets skips a generation and re-appears in Jacques and Kit). Charles’ name is canonically known. In previous threads I’ve used Aaron as E’s uncle and I might stick with that. Though I also like Abraham for its literal meaning (”father of many” as the eldest of this massive Snicket clan) and for the VFD parallels of the story of Abraham and Isaac, as a father willing to sacrifice his son on faith. B I headcanon as Benjamin. The reason his whereabouts are uninteresting is he never joined VFD. He was just never interested. Benjamin Snicket lived out his life having a normal, mundane job like being a florist or something and never got caught up in the codes and plots his brothers were into.
DEF Generation I’ve personally established F as Fiona in a thread before and I’m sticking to that. I like the idea of Fiona Widdershins being named after someone two generations earlier. E, is of course, the Snicket mother. I’ve been personally calling her Esther in my head but I’m not locked in on that. I do accept the common fanon that D is the parent of the Anwhistle brothers (see below) with one eyebrow and ear. However, I will typically not be following the other common theory that this is also Ishmael’s student. Ishmael’s student was orphaned, and C lived long enough to meet and teach Lemony and Kit. Personal headcanon name: Delilah.
GHI Trio I will be following common fanon that  G and I are Gregor and Ike Anwhistle, taking their last name from their (unnamed) father. This does mean that Gregor and Ike are first cousins to Jacques, Kit and Lemony. VFD families are often interconnected. Some people theorize H is Hector, who is a VFD member. But Hector’s interactions with the Snickets in both VV and WCTBATH? don’t really fit a ‘first cousins’ vibe for me. There are enough repeated initials in VFD to go around. No locked in name (Heather? Hailey?). Tempted to say H is named Helvella after a family of mushrooms.
Connection to Beatrice It’s mentioned in the Wide Window that Ike is also Beatrice’s cousin, and whistling is a family trait. There is a way for this to be true without Lemony and Beatrice being related, if Beatrice is Ike’s cousin on his father’s side of the family. This, again, gives a neat way for the Baudelaire family to get involved in VFD and repeates the motif of layered VFD families. Betrand (as stated by Poe in TPP) was an orphan, so might have taken on the Baudelaire family name, as Jacob did for the Snickets. This does mean Lemony and Beatrice, while themselves unrelated, would share cousins. (It makes me think of stories where sets of sisters marry sets of brothers).
JKL Jacques, Kit and Lemony. The classic Snickets. Firmly established in canon.
MNO I do not think O is Olaf, it does not make sense given how the characters interact and talk about one another for him to be cousins with JKL. M and O being Miranda and Olivia Caliban is more plausible (definitely not in TV-based threads where J and O are a couple) but even in book verse I don’t think there’s any indication Lemony and Jacques interact with O in a familial way. This is something I might use in a thread-by-thread basis, but as a rule of thumb MNO will be different characters.

random ishmael headcanon back when he was a chemistry teacher (warning of a child’s death at beginning and abuse/corporal punishment at the end):
at the high school ishmael once taught chemistry at, there are six groups students are sorted into. these groups were not made or name by ishmael, but by the students themselves.
the first group is known as the favorites or teacher’s pets. they’re students who pass ishmael’s classes with flying colors. these students likes ishmael (or tolerate him), and ishmael likes them back. he talks of these students as the brightest and most intelligent of their generation. he calls them in class and is happy to hear them answer correctly, or gently tells them how they answer wrong. ishmael is proud to be their teacher, and will always do something for them, sometimes without even being ask.
[one such favorite student, d snicket, later known as d anwhistle, got ishmael to help her long after graduation. d got ishmael to help her and her husband into blackmailing vfd to return gregor back into their care after he and his younger sister helen recruitment gone wrong. helen, like lemony, was drop out of the car and fell. unlikely lemony, helen didn’t survive.]
the second group is known as the suck-ups. they’re students who also pass ishmael’s classes with flying colors too, and like (or tolerate) ishmael. however, ishmael doesn’t like them back. he talks of them as fine, hard working students, but nothing more (he won’t do anything for them). they’re students who speak out without permission to get praise, which annoys ishmael (and other students) very much. in short, they’re wannabes favorites/teacher’s pets, always jealous of those who do get ishmael’s good graces.
[one suck up, c baudelaire, wasn’t happy to learn his daughter beatrice earned ishmael’s ire. c got more upset at beatrice gaining ishmael’s ire when discovering how d’s eldest son gregor, got into ishmael’s good graces. history repeats itself in the strangest of ways.]
the third group is known as the lucky bunch. they’re students who pass ishmael’s classes with ease of usually the average grade or slightly above average grade. ishmael has some minor problems with them, but they’re good enough students to not complain about. he’ll also do something for them on their behalf if they ask very politely. these students tend to have issues with ishmael (mainly his strictness), they but keep these complaints only to those who are in the same group as them.
[one student, dorothea s. markson, later known as the woman with hair but no beard, got ishmael to give a good word to the v.f.d teacher running the mock trial program to allow her in after asking ishmael politely before school started. dorothea thinks the teacup she got for him helped.]
the fourth group is known as the troublemakers. it doesn’t matter if they have failing grades, average grades, or even pass with flying colors. these students dislike ishmael, and ishmael dislikes them back, though he says it through creative means sometimes disguise as praise. battle of wits and pranks will occur in class. if it doesn’t end in a stalemate (which it usually does), the student(s) gets sent to detention (seen as an escape) or gets sent to the principal (seen as a fate on par with death).
[e snicket is one of these troublemakers. e can’t figure out how could d like ishmael as a teacher, and ishmael can’t figure out how d and e are vastly different from another. e is one of the few to never get sent to the principal, for she plays it safe in her battles.]
the fifth group is known as the ignored ones. it too, doesn’t matter if they have failing grades, average grades, or even pass with flying colors. these students live to their name: ignore. ishmael never calls them in class, and the few interactions given are brief, like ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye’. ishamael has to think a bit of the student before giving an opinion on them if a fellow teacher ask for his thoughts. the students don’t mind being ignore. granted, it depends if ishmael can recall their names.
[s. theodora markson is one such ignored student. ishmael remembers her more than other ignored students though because her wild hair is even wilder than her sister’s hair, and the fact her first name has ishmael always thinking of one particular duke ellington song.]
the sixth and final group is known as ‘the favs’. these failing or almost failing students or slightly below average students dislike ishmael, but ishmael “likes” them. ishmael calls on them in class, praising them if they answer right, but humiliates them if they answer wrong. he worries over them, but rarely acts on it. ishmael is affectionate to them -sometimes giving them gentle pat on the back or ruffles their hair- as well as physically abusive to them -sometimes slapping across the face or canes their hands. in short, hell.
[this group has many non-vfd affiliated students here. one student was a quiet boy who loves nature and jazz. said student eventually grows up and joins an organization that was later falsely accused of a bombing suspected to be done by vfd themselves.]

HEADCANON: VFD
Tumblr media
BASICS. VFD is a secret organization throughout the series. It stands for Volunteer Fire Department and it’s members are dedicated to extinguishing both literal and figurative fires. They represent the “true human tradition; the best chance of extinguishing chaos and cruelty throughout the world.” (Jaques Snicket, season 2 episode 5)
VOLUNTEERS. The Baudelaire parents were the leaders of VFD, and other volunteer members included Josephine Anwhistle, Esme Squalor, Monty Montgomery, and even Count Olaf. Jaques Snicket states that he and Olaf did some “noble work” in the Village of Fowl Devotees once.
THE SCHISM. Before Violet was born, VFD had split apart into two groups. One side started fires while the other put them out. The catalyst for the schism, according to my own observations, is the death of Olaf’s father. He was shot with a poison dart by Beatrice Baudelaire and Lemony Snicket by mistake; her original target being Esme Squalor. Olaf wanted revenge for his father’s death, so he burned the Baudelaire home. His hatred towards Beatrice extended to her children.
THE SUGAR BOWL. The cause for this accidental murder is because of the contents in a particular sugar bowl. We learn in The Grim Grotto that Gregor Anwhisle of Anwhisle Aquatics had developed a deadly fungus: the Medusoid Mycelium, which could kill a person in an hour if the spores are inhaled. It was developed with the intent to use as a weapon against the fire starting side of VFD. The contents of the sugar bowl contained a cure that made the consumer completely immune to the fungus (series canon, not book canon). Beatrice Baudelaire stole the sugar bowl from Esme, for reasons unknown, but I am guessing that it was because she thought it would be safer in her possession and she didn’t want such an important thing to fall in the wrong hands.

The R - Part 1:
What is the connection between Mr Remora and Duchess R [of Winnipeg]?
One of the many mysteries that Lemony Snicket has left behind for readers (and viewers, to a certain extent) is 'What does the R stand for, in "Duchess R" ?' I am going to attempt to answer this question using any resources available, under the title 'The R'. This will be over a series of unfortunate posts, in this format.
Firstly, we must look for any and all clues that can give us even the slightest hint as to what R might stand for.
For this, I have gone through every character in ASOUE and this is produced: (after the cut, but feel free to skip ahead)

Yeah. Every single one.
Now, let's rule out everyone who does not have a name beginning with R, or is unclear: (again, feel free to skip ahead)
Bald Man with the Long Nose
Mrs. Bass
Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender
Incredibly Deadly Viper
Kind Editor
Man with a Beard but No Hair
Mr. Remora
White-Faced Women
Woman with Hair but No Beard

Duchess R
R's Mother
R's Father
Young Rölf
Mr. Spats
Mrs. Spats
Town Fathers
As the title states, we'll keep some focus on Remora, but we'll eliminate all other minor characters:
Bald Man with the Long Nose
Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender
Incredibly Deadly Viper
Kind Editor
Man with a Beard but No Hair
Mr. Remora
White-Faced Women
Woman with Hair but No Beard
Wart-Faced Man
Madame diLustro
Monty Montgomery's Sister
Bertrand Baudelaire's Cousin
Robinson
Duchess R
R's Mother
R's Father
Young Rölf
According to Various Fan Deductions:
TMWABBNH & TWWHBNB are Gifford & Ghede
The White-Faced Women are Zada and Zora
Lemony's Kind Editor is Moxie Mallahan
Madame diLustro is Sunny Baudelaire
This rules out the 4 of them.
Bald Man with the Long Nose
Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender
Incredibly Deadly Viper
Mr. Remora
Wart-Faced Man
Monty Montgomery's Sister
Bertrand Baudelaire's Cousin
Robinson
Duchess R
R's Mother
R's Father
Young Rölf
Logically speaking, why would there be a connection between Ink and Duchess R? Let's eliminate unlikely possibilities:
Mr. Remora
Monty Montgomery's Sister
Bertrand Baudelaire's Cousin
Robinson
Duchess R
R's Mother
R's Father
Young Rölf
Monty Montgomery's sister would be (_insert name here_) Montgomery. This, to me, rules her out too... and the same logic applies to Bertrand's cousin.
Mr. Remora
Robinson
(Duchess R)
(R's Mother)
(R's Father)
Young Rölf
Obviously her family are related:
Mr. Remora
Robinson - Islander
Young Rölf
So, the above names are generated. I will, henceforth, analyse a link between each character and R, starting with Remora.
POINTS:
a. It's known that a few characters in the Snicket-verse have alliterating names, such as Quigley Quagmire, Beatrice Baudelaire.
b. It's also known that some characters have WEIRD connections to others, such as Quigley's 'relation' to Mr Poe.
THEORY: Given a. and b. to be true, Mr R _______ Remora, has some abstract connection to the Duchess.
This connection can only really be established if one goes by Netflix canon and assumes Nero's surname to be Feint, and combines this with ATWQ:
Duchess R is Remora's boss' ancestor's murderer's friend.
R's friend is Lemony, who murdered Hangfire, who is the ancestor of Nero, Remora's boss.
Part 2 Still to Come...
