i think marco bucci on youtube ( im sure i've mentioned him before ) is much better at explaining these things than i am but basically when im rendering things i deviate a lot from the base tone and i use that base tone as more of a suggestion than a requirement ??? so i have an underpainting, the color of it is somewhere between the base and light source, and then i paint over that with a bunch of colors that are closer or further away from the base on the color wheel depending on how far from the light a plane ( physically ) is. color ( light ) reflects off surfaces and can bounce onto other ones and that gives me an excuse to put a bunch of tiny little hints of other colors all over the canvas

i think the main thing is thinking about color less as individual slices on the wheel and more as a continuum that can be pushed and pulled in certain directions. it also Super helps to have a good understanding of value because value and color are best friends of course
