AdA, Kapitel 77: Konkretere Pläne
Jacob wusste es in der Sekunde, in der seine Freunde durch die Tür traten. Es war völlig unverkennbar an Tinas Strahlen, Newts aufrechter Haltung und der Tatsache, dass die beiden sich ansahen, als seien sie allein auf der Welt – mehr noch als sonst. Ein kurzer Blick auf Tinas Ringfinger genügte, um seinen Verdacht zu bestätigen – aber er sagte nichts. Er wollte ihnen den Spaß nicht verderben, also bat er sie nur herein, und drehte sich eilig um, um sein Grinsen zu verbergen. „Ich habe Kekse gebacken!“, verkündete er laut, und sogar für seine Verhältnisse klang es extrem enthusiastisch. Er freute sich so sehr für die beiden.

Summary: In 1968, Eris Vanserra is leading a double life. In West Berlin, he is a promising new doctor who frequents queer clubs, fucking his way through his friend circle. In his parents’ village, though, he walks the thin line between success and failure under his father’s brutal repression. Eventually, he realizes there can be no way forward unless he takes matters into his own hands.

Please heed the warnings and the dead dove tag, as this fic is chock full of possible triggers. I will put warnings at the beginning of each chapter, too, but…you know, this fic is about killing Nazis. However, there will be no onscreen violence against Jewish people. For chapter 1, there are no warnings.
chapter one
The first vivid memory he has of his father is wreathed in flame. Beron’s face, hollowed by war and nearly obscured by plumes of billowing, acrid smoke, peers down into the heart of the bonfire.
He looks sick, Eris thinks. His small hand is nearly crushed in Beron’s bigger one, but he knows better than to pull away.
“People like us,” Beron begins, his voice grey and smoky too, “we have to hide who we are. What we’ve been.”
The flames are licking at the pile of fabric in front of them; their vicious fingers claw into the growing night.

On the evasive Basque accent
We all know by now that the legend saying Basque is almost an impossible language to learn is nothing but Basquephobic propaganda. Euskara, just like any other language, may have tricky parts but all languages can be learnt.
One of the silent, trickiest sides of Basque though is its accent and intonation. It flows naturally for Basque people - even the ones that grew up speaking only in Spanish and then learn Basque - but is pretty tough to understand for students from outside EH.
Most languages have a single dominant syllabe and fixed rules for stress but this does not happen in Basque. Linguist Antonio Tovar figured this out already in the 50s: "The Indo-European and Semitic idea that every word has an accent does not seem to apply to Basque."
In fact, Basque accent looks quite different from Indo-European and Semitic languages. According to the Hyman classification, these are the locations of stress:
[+1] dominant inital stress (~114 of the studied languages) or prototone, include Chechen, Gegorgian, Czech, Latvian, Serbo-Croatian, Irish, German, Dutch, Suomi, Estonian or Hungarian.
[-1] dominant final stress (97 of the studied languages) or oxitone, include Armenian, Kurdish, Farsi, French, Hebrew or Ainu.
[-2] dominant penultimate stress (77 of the studied languages) or paroxitone, include Quechua, Aimara, Breton, Polish, Romanian, Protuguese or Spanish.
[+2] second syllabe dominant stress (12 of the studied languages) include Dakota, Tsakhur or Mongolian. Following Basque linguist Koldo Mitxelena's theories, Basque belongs to this group, the only European language!
For example:
Beriain = be-riAin, while Spanish-speaking students tend to say be-ria-In.
debekatuta = de-bE-katu-tA, while Spanish-speaking students tend to read de-be-ka-TU-ta.
aireportua = ai-rE-por-tu-A, and not ai-re-por-TU-a.
zitzaidalako = zi-tzAI-dalako, and not zi-tzai-da-lA-ko.
Although debatable, many linguists agree that even though phonology changes over time, in words of linguist Steve Peter "there is no, at present, any theory of accentual change in the way there's a theory of phonological change". Accent may be even a part of an ancient substrate, like linguist Navarro Tomás wrote: "On my side I noticed the possibility of assuming the same kinship among the most peculiar characteristics of Aragonese and Basque intonation."
Linguist Álvarez Enparantza "Txillardegi" thought that if ancient Basque followed the stressed and non-stressed syllabe pattern our vowel system would be different, and that this very simple vowel system is better explained assuming that ancient Basque was a tonal language. This theory may also explain the dancing accent - and even double-accented words - of Euskara.

listens to Linkin Park for sure, fav song is probably no more sorrow or in the end (he likes the basic songs i’m telling u) also DEFINITELY listens to Three Days Grace, doesn’t have a fav song tho
he was obsessed with guitar hero for a little bit and he got really good at it when it came out but then stopped playing and now can’t even fc a song on easy mode
sleeps on his stomach with his face to the right side
if you like a movie he doesn’t like he will act like you’re a swine and bring it up all the time to make fun of you
doesn’t have a bed frame, sleeps on two mattresses stacked on top of each other
he is so bland and probably has like one thing on his wall, the rest of his room is bright white with stains on it
doesn’t like sour candy
never talked much in high school, probably only had like 3 friends each year
terrible hearing, absolutely awful (from all the guns he’s shot INDOORS)
used to LOVE zombie movies as a kid and obviously he is not a big fan of them anymore

Doc and Grian hate each other. well..
Dog hates Grian, he's always messing with his stuff, breaking it, vandalizing it, covering it in dirt. The whole nine yards with this guy, and the worst part is that doc can't do anything to get him back! Every retaliation Doc sends Grian's way is disregarded with a laugh, like water off the back of a duck. Makes sense, pesky bird.
Eventually, after Doc manages to uncover his beloved perimeter and Grian just comes back with more dirt, more stupid live laugh love signs, Doc snaps. He's never really shouted at anyone on hermicraft, never had a reason to. This is too far, Doc can only take so much, even if he didn't have the creeper side of his brain yelling about how his territory was being threatened.
To Doc, the perimeter is his home, his nest, where he eats and sleeps, where he's comfortable and able to mess around with redstone. Grian constantly coming in and messing with it is upsetting on an instinctual level but until now Doc has ignored it, telling himself that Grian was his friend and surely he wouldn't take it too far.
He was proven wrong and now he was screaming, screaming at Grian because he just couldn't take it anymore. It doesn't matter that Grian doesn't know German, it doesnt matter that Grian looks afraid, all that matters is getting the point across that the perimeter is Doc's space, Doc's nest. It is not a place to do whatever you wish.
After he's done, Grian is stunned and silent. Doc runs away to the deepest, darkest, safest, corner and covers himself in moss. He doesn't speak to anyone for a while, exactly how long he doesn't know. The rest of the nho bring him food and water, leaving it a respectful distance away.
He's nearly ready to come back up, back to socializing, when he hears talons clack on the deepstone in front of him. He starts hissing immediately but Grian is not well known for taking the hint.
"I cleaned it up, it's all back to normal. And I- well, I got Mumbo and Tango to help me with the tunnel bore. Me n' Scar got it all back to how you had it."
It doesn't feel great to know that grian had been running around when he wasn't up, but the sentiment is appreciated. He sighs and raises his head, the usual glow of his eye gone because he hasn't charged it in probably weeks.
"can you lead me out. can't see." Creeper vision on its own is nearly blind, he's gotta fix that.
It's trust. Doc is still fuming, angry and vile, but Grian showed that he realized his mistake, he righted his mistake, and Doc trusts him not to be malicious again.
Grian holds his hand the whole way out of the cave, warning him of lips and ledges that he can't see. Doc knows he's closer than necessary, knows he's sorry. He accepts the apology and leans back.
It's not forgiveness, but it is something.

It isn't hard, though, to notice the way Grian avoids him afterwards. He gets the occasional nod if they pass by each other in the shopping district, but the dumb bird is hard to find otherwise. Even in the shopping district, Doc has seen him maybe once or twice.
He knows he should be pleased. Finally, he's got what he wanted. His nest has been left alone, everything is fixed and he can continue working on his projects.
So, damn it, why does he miss the stupid guy?
Grian pushed too far, sure, but Doc still enjoyed his company. He enjoyed the game of cat and mouse they had together, if only it hasn't escalated so far. The Civil War and Area 77 worked because it just wasn't happening at Doc's own nest. He had a place to retreat to at the end of it all to curl up and feel safe.
He hates being the one to give, but he's growing tired of Grian avoiding him. It seems like Doc needs to think of his own play - just with some ground rules this time.

All in all, I love this chapter. Much better than the previous one (chp.77) for sure. Can't wait to see what will happen next!

On this day, 15 January 1934, the popular UK tabloid the Daily Mail published an article called “Hurrah for the Blackshirts!” in support of Oswald Mosley's fascist movement. The article was written by Viscount Rothermere, who was an avid supporter of Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini, as well as Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party. Rothermere declared in the paper that the election of Nazi MPs "represent[ed] the rebirth of Germany as a nation". After the Nazi seizure of power, when democracy was abolished and many socialists and communists were sent to the concentration camps, Rothermere praised how "Under Herr Hitler’s control, the youth of Germany is effectively organised against the corruption of Communism.” Rothermere corresponded personally with Hitler, and met with him several times, and wrote approvingly of how the Nazis had dealt with Jewish people: “Israelites of international attachments were insinuating themselves into key positions in the German administrative machine… It is from such abuses that Hitler has freed Germany.” Rothermere's family still own the Mail, which today continues to advocate far right politics. For example in recent years they have attacked the National Health Service for distributing HIV medication, falsely claimed that a terrorist bomber was an LGBT+ activist, falsely claimed that most people trying to claim sickness benefits were faking it, criticised the National Trust for acknowledging the existence of gay people, falsely claimed that 10,000 people were trying to claim sickness benefits because they were "too fat", mocked gay marriage, made countless false claims about Muslim immigrants and much more. Daily Mail columnist Melanie Phillips was repeatedly quoted in the manifesto of Norwegian neo-Nazi terrorist Anders Brevik who murdered 77 people. Today, the Mail is the top-selling newspaper in the UK. On This Day - 16th Oct 1946
Marks 77 years since the Nuremberg executions. (This is gonna be one of my longer posts guys).
At the Nuremberg trials, 12 Nazi war criminals were sentenced to death by hanging: Hermann Göring, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Hans Frank, Wilhelm Frick, Alfred Jodl, Ernst Kaltenbrunner, Wilhelm Keitel, Alfred Rosenberg, Fritz Sauckel, Arthur Seyss-Inquart, Julius Streicher and Martin Bormann (whom was sentenced to death in absentia - as his whereabouts at the time were unknown. It is now believed he died trying to escape Berlin in 1945).
I'll go through each of the executions in order of scheduling:
Hermann Göring.
Hermann Göring was the first scheduled to be hung. However, after being denied his request to be shot by firing squad Göring committed suicide in his cell via a cyanide capsule two hours before the scheduled executions were to be carried out. It's unknown how he acquired the cyanide, as cells were checked thoroughly and regularly as well as body searches. There are some rumours however, including one that suggests that the capsule was brought to him by his wife through their departing kiss. Because of his suicide in his cell, no last words were recorded. He was aged 53.
2. Joachim von Ribbentrop
Joachim von Ribbentrop was the first to actually be executed. Upon reaching the dock his last words were: "God protect Germany. God have mercy on my soul. My final wish is that Germany should recover her unity and that, for the sake of peace, there should be an understanding between East and West. I wish peace to the world." It was later recalled that before the hood was placed over his head, he looked over at the Lutheran chaplain and said "I'll see you again." His time of death was recorded at 1:30AM. He was aged 53.
3. Wilhelm Keitel
Wilhelm Keitel's last words were: "I call on God Almighty to have mercy on the German people. More than two million German soldiers went to their death for the fatherland before me. I follow now my sons - all for Germany." His time of death was recorded at 1:44AM. He was aged 64.
4. Ernst Kaltenbrunner
(couldn't find his detention report, frustratingly. So have this image instead.)
Ernst Kaltenbrunner's last words were: "I have loved my German people and my fatherland with a warm heart. I have done my duty by the laws of my people and I am sorry my people were led this time by men who were not soldiers and crimes were committed of which I had no knowledge." His time of death was recorded at 1:52AM. He was aged 43.
5. Alfred Rosenberg
Alfred Rosenberg's last words were: "No." He was the only one who refused to make a final statement. His time of death was recorded at 1:59AM. He was aged 53.
6. Hans Frank
Hans Frank was recorded to be the only one who walked into the chamber with a "smile on his countenance." His last words were: "I am thankful for the kind treatment during my captivity and I ask God to accept me with mercy." His time of death was recorded at 2:08AM. He was aged 46.
7. Wilhelm Frick
Wilhelm Frick's last words were: "Long live eternal Germany." His time was recorded at 2:20AM. He was aged 69.
8. Julius Streicher
Julius Stretcher's execution was described as melodramatic, and cried out "Heil Hitler" and "The Bolsheviks will hang you one day" before the hood was placed over his head. Julius Streicher's last words were: "Adele, my dear wife." His time of death is unknown. He was aged 61.
9. Fritz Sauckel
(Couldn't find his detention report either, so have this image instead.)
Fritz Sauckel's sentence was considered controversial, considering this his superior, Albert Speer, was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment - just barely avoiding the hangman's noose. His last words were: "I am dying innocent. The sentence is wrong. God protect Germany and make Germany great again. Long live Germany. God protect my family." His time of death was recorded at 2:40AM. He was aged 51.
10. Alfred Jodl
Alfred Jodl's last words were: "I greet you, my eternal Germany." His time of death was recorded at 2:50AM. He was aged 56.
11. Arthur Seyss-Inquart
Arthur Seyss-Inquart's last words were: "I hope this execution is the last act of the tragedy of the Second World War and that the lesson taken from this world war will be that peace and understanding should exist between people. I believe in Germany." His time of death was recorded at 2:59AM. He was aged 54.
The executions were botched. Many of the condemned had slowly strangled to death (such as Joachim von Ribbentrop), and many had hit their heads on the trapdoor as they went down as the trapdoor was too small. One of the condemned took 28 minutes to die.
After the executions, the bodies were taken to a crematorium in Munich (all under false names) and their ashes scattered in the river Isar. The majority of the condemned's war medals were either destroyed or denazified before being handed over to the US finance director for sale to offset the cost of the executions.
