Hello! Looking for some help on a difference between the manga and anime in an earlier arc. In ch. 12 of the manga, Loid tells Yuri, "whether I had to take a bullet or a nuke, I'm prepared to give my life for her [Yor]." However in the anime it seems to be a little more dramatic, as Loid says something like "spears or meteors falling from the sky." I was just wondering if these translations were intentionally different or if the original Japanese in the manga and anime were more similar. (Writing a fic right now where this quote matters, haha) Thank you!
This is an interesting case of something getting altered in translation and altered in the anime adaptation. In the original Japanese version of the manga, he says "whether spears (槍/yari) or a nuclear bomb (核爆弾/kakubakudan) fall from the sky, he'll protect her with his life."
In the official English translation, he says "knives, bullets, or a nuclear bomb." Not sure why they changed "spears" to "knives and bullets."
In the anime however, they kept everything the same as the original version of the manga, but changed "nuclear bomb" to "meteors."
I can't find a screenshot with subtitles in Japanese, but if you watch the scene, you can hear him say "meteor" (隕石/inseki) instead. I can understand why they made that change, considering the sensitive subject matter of nuclear bombs, especially in Japan. You can get away with more potentially touchy things like that in manga, but not so much on TV with sponsors and a wider audience overall.
So yeah, if you want to base your fic on the translation that's most faithful to what Endo intended, it would be "spears and a nuclear bomb."

I think Spy x Family is the best anti-war story I've ever read. So many stories end up glorifying war, even when they don't mean to, just because of the nature of storytelling and conflict. But SxF bypasses all that by focusing on how the war affects everyone even outside of the fighting.
I agree with you on that. I suppose Endo managed to avoid the pitfalls by focusing not on the war itself, but on the people affected by it. When we saw Twilight's past it didn't started with him being a soldier, it began with him being a child that lost everything because of the conflict, when they showed him fighting it was to juxtapose how the make believe along his friends was a grin reality he wished to end, and when that's not the case, the story showed him suffering and questioning all the senseless killing.
I feel like it's a lot of what made Valiant Hearts so great. The War is not the focus, the people being dragged into it are. If you want to showcase the hell that is such a conflict you don't write about the hail of bullets and the tanks being blown up by artillery, no, you focus on the pair of bloodstained child shoes left on the side of the road, and from there you know everything that there is to know

One of the things I love about Spy x Family is that this story is full of strong, brave and interesting women. Girlbosses everywhere!
Martha was already a cool character before chapter 97 but seeing her willing to do everything in her power to protect what she holds dear is just too much for my poor lil fangirl heart.
Henry's heart is in a good place. In an ideal world, his vision of education to acheive peace would be viable. He might disagree with Martha's decision but he respects her and value her greatly.
He's most likely suffering from the same emotional constipation as Twillight's right now but I'm sure his feelings for Martha are probably just as grand.

Anime only watchers and people who aren't caught up with the Manga, BEWARE... Cuz I'm about to discuss Spy X Family Mission 98... You have been warned...! 👌
[SPOILERS AHEAD FROM THIS POINT ON]
This chapter literally broke me in more ways than one...
This chapter is a continuation of Martha and Henderson's backstory from Mission 97, so let's talk about it shall we...?
So when I opened this chapter and saw a radio...:
...I literally got PTSD from seeing it because it immediately made me think of the first part of Mission 62, Twilight's (or rather [REDACTED]'s) past, so I knew that things were about to take a turn for the worst...! 😔
On the same page, Martha asks Henderson what he's doing here and he tells her that there's a personnel shortage, so he got to graduate early. Then, Henderson turns off the radio and says this:
This is just... It's so sad, but true that things, like radios, that were once made for helping others can easily be used to spread hatred and cause harm... It's just not right... 😞
Moving on, after being separated for so long, Martha and Henderson were able to have another tea party like they used to have, but it wasn't long before things started to take a turn... During a school safety drill, Martha asks Henderson if he's excused from being drafted, and he tells her...:
"It may be that even education is powerless now."... 😟
Hearing Henderson say that hurts my soul... But nothing could prepare me for the next few pages...
Why... Why do things like this have to happen... 😣
No, things like this SHOULDN'T happen...! Innocent people dying because of senseless violence, because of war, it's just not right nor is it fair...! And I will always stand by that...!!
Continuing on, Henderson finds out that Martha is volunteering for The Women's Defense Auxiliary and he's upset by this. She tells him that the ballet company she was a part of is going to disband and her dream will go with it, so he scolds her again and she tells him this:
My heart hurts just seeing the anguish in face and in her words...!! 💔
And the heart break continues because Martha overhears that Henderson is going to be married off and she is devastated... But while in tears, she overhears that the dance is coming again, so this is her last chance to tell him how she feels...!
At the dance, Martha approaches Henderson:
Martha looks so cute here...!! 💗 I was so excited to see them dance together, that when I turned the page, something unexpected happened... I started to cry...:
Seeing them happy, even though just for this moment, it reminded me why I love Spy X Family so much... It's for these moments, the moments that most of S×F's cast is fighting for, the moments that we all should strive for...!! There are just so many bad things going on in the world that it makes wish that moments like these could be the norm for all instead of some...!! I just don't understand why must there be so much hatred and malice in the world... Why can't we all live in peace instead of conflict...
Gosh, I'm even crying now just writing all of that... I should probably start to wrap this up...!
So, just as Martha is about to confess to Henderson, this happens...:
...and the chapter ends... 💔😭💔
And that was Mission 98; truly such a heartwreching chapter to read, just like Mission 62 was...
I don't even know what else to say except thank you to Endo... Thank you for making this manga, for getting me feel all of these feelings, for giving me the opportunity to share these feelings with everyone that loves this series as much as I do...!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart...!! 💗

Today's new chapter continues the Henderson x Martha angst 😭 In just a couple chapters Endo has done an amazing job conveying how much Martha loves Henry, how volatile the war-torn world they live in is, and how Henry's ideals about education shaped who he became...but also led to regret. If Endo can weave this much of an engrossing side story about minor characters, I can't wait to see what he'll do with the main characters!
A lot of people have pointed out parallels between Henry and Martha's relationship with that of both future Twiyor and Damianya. They definitely have similarities, and while there's no guarantee that Henry and Martha's story has any bearing on the outcome of the other two relationships, my interpretation of it, at least right now, is that it's a cautionary tale...it's showing that this is what could happen to Loid/Yor, Damian/Anya, and honestly any future couples, if things don't change for the better. What we're seeing from Henry and Martha's story is how relationships can get so easily torn apart from war, as well as how clinging so hard to one's ideals - like what Henry has been doing - is also a recipe for tragedy. I mentioned in my last chapter review that I see this as a parallel to Twilight holding on so hard to his spy persona and ideals that he could be doomed to lose out on potential happiness if he doesn't realize his true feelings.
Also, if Twilight fails his mission and another war does break out, the consequences would be extreme both on a worldly and personal level. We saw in this chapter that Martha's path in life was greatly altered as a result of the war (she changed from wanting to be a ballerina to joining the army) and thus she and Henry were torn apart further. What would happen to the characters in the current generation if Desmond does do something to entice war again?
I also really liked the below panel showing what's probably the last scene of where Henry and Martha spent their most pleasant times - now it's empty, one chair has fallen, and a bird chips while war planes fly overhead. Such a great use of subtle symbolism to hammer in the tragic mood.
The chapter ends with mention of Henry potentially getting married due to pressure from his parents than because he wants to. I'm really curious how that turned out, plus how Martha ended up working for the Blackbells. Looks like their sad story will continue for at least one more chapter 😢

These "non main plot" related arcs do hit me in the chest. The anti-war sentiment is conveyed poignantly and consistently throughout the series. I think it is important to dedicate chapters to one of the key messages of SxF. The stark juxtaposition between the (mostly) wholesome and funny daily lives of the Forgers and the suffering the adults experienced in the past. These chapters serve to shows us the history we (and characters) shouldn't repeat. It adds to why we and the characters should be invested in the lofty mission of "world peace", because war / conflict is a horror that affects everyone and permeates through basically the entire cast. From our leads to side characters like Millie. Yes, the tone of SxF is generally cheerful, but it sobers up appropriately to remind us of the traumas these characters have experienced, and yet kindness persists in a post-war world (or inter-war period).
Regarding the theme of education and its affect on the young, I liked how Endo showed Eden during wartime in contrast to the period of relative peace we've always seen at Eden (with underlying tensions, of course). Staff and students receiving unfortunate news about their family and having to continue with their day. Hiding in shelters. Henry trying to teach young kids who sleep in his lessons. Martha's despair over her dreams being shattered by the war and her resolve to protect. Henry and Martha aren't kids anymore, but they're still young, fresh graduates from a privileged school who jump into society (and are forced to participate in the war). It gives us a haunting vision of what life could be, and makes us appreciate that Anya and the kids don't have to deal with this at the moment.

I love how S x F shows the horrors of war less in a gory or gruesoma manner, it focuses on the tragedy of war on a personal level.
How it destroys families, robs children of their childhood and innocence, leads to lost dreams and love, and creates trauma impacting generations.
It is heartbreaking and touching to explore this theme on such a personal level.

Spy x Family is not just a cutesy story about a girl being adopted by a loving, fake family. It is a heartbreaking story about the effects of war, and this plot line about Henry and Martha is just destroying me. I thought Loid’s childhood was bad enough, but reading how the war affected people on the other side shows how everyone suffers in war.
