Note
I know I have asked this before but please could you do five headcanons for the gaang age swap au?? if you don't mind
Universe tag: #Gaang age swap AU.
1. Let's talk about the Serpent's Pass and Ba Sing Se. I've been glossing over that until now, because it's a sad and tangled mess. Zuko and Iroh are traveling with the Gaang at this point, and when they meet a pair of peasants (be nice, Zuko) who are robbed of their tickets and passports, they too are dragooned into crossing the Serpent's Pass. Iroh however, knows exactly why the Serpent's Pass is named that, having lost quite a few ships on that lake that were meant to function as his supply lines during his six hundred day seige. He helpfully informs the Avatar of this fact.
2. The peasants lose what little wits they have (what did I say about being nice, Zuko? Besides, it's little wit or few wits, not little wits. Bad grammar makes you sound like a peasant.) and the situation is not improved when an old friend of the Avatar and his companions shows up, a young woman named Suki, who is working as part of the port security force. She grew up on Kyoshi Island, and has plenty of experience with big sneaky water monsters and she wants nothing to do with this one, and thanks going over the Serpent's Pass is a terrible idea. Not to worry, Iroh's troops figured out how to handle a serpent emergency. He buys for dirt cheap two elderly turtle-oxen from a refugee who wasn't allowed to bring them into the city, and was struggling to persuade the ferry cooks to buy them for meat. Then, when the lake monster starts getting too close for comfort, Iroh quick gives a shot of lightning to the first turtle-ox and Toph uses earthbending to launch it far into the lake. The serpent takes off after the splash, finds dinner, and is distracted. They keep going, and when the serpent is done, they do the same with the second turtle-ox. They get across safely, and Aang finds the whole experience a powerful reinforcement for his commitment to vegetarianism.
3. Once the peasants and their new bundle of joy are gone, finally, (Nephew, really!) and Suki has hitched a ferry ride back to the other side of the lake, Iroh quietly tells the group that they can't let anyone in Ba Sing Se know who he or his nephew really are. They're just friends of the Avatar. No names. That night, once Sokka and Zuko are asleep, he tells Aang, Katara, and Toph about the seige of Ba Sing Se. Toph tells him she already knows.
4. Zuko spends their entire time in Ba Sing Se being, as he sees it, disregarded, disrespected, and ignored. For example, after that Joo Dee lady leaves, Zuko helpfully informs the Avatar that he wouldn't have to wait if this were the Fire Nation. He would get to see the Firelord right away, and sure he'd be drugged and in chains, but at least he wouldn't have to wait six to eight weeks for some bureaucrat to decide to let him see the monarch. The Avatar laughs and ruffles his hair. See, such disrespect. His uncle and the Avatar have him right where they want him and now that they do, they just want to treat him like a helpless child!
5. Is it any wonder that when later, his sister asks for his help, and treats him as able to give help, he says yes?

Note
Your entries for the sokkla saturdays are always so good. It makes me wonder: which one is your favorite entry for each of the last three years you participated?
Haha, I was actually thinking about this for the last Fic-to-Art I did. I kind of picked my favorite stories in order to draw them as the representatives from each... anthology? Compendium? Whatever the right name for it might be xD
Anyway... here we go. The full list of Seyary's favorite stories of my Sokkla Saturday entries, starting in 2020:
Matching Heartbeats (2020)
It's difficult to really rank this one fairly because I admit, at the start I had no idea what I was doing. It was meant to be a week-to-week concept and I definitely started very lighthearted, but by week 3 I was going a little crazy with stories and I suddenly found myself building huge stuff I absolutely wasn't trying to go for at first x'D sooo... unfortunately the first two stories, which were the ones I was most easygoing with, wouldn't be at the top here even if I don't think they're bad, actually. They're just not as thoroughly fleshed out, I'd say. So anyway, ranking the whole thing now...
Yakuza AU (Azula and Sokka are in rival Yakuza clans)
"I melt in your hands" (Azula captured by the Gaang AU)
Making a deal (Azula and Sokka work together to stop an assassin in Ba Sing Se's Palace)
Loyalty (Dark Ursa AU)
Sokkla is painful for Zuko (Zuko is enlightened by a dream that convinces him that Sokka and Azula are the perfect match for each other)
Arranged Marriage-Touch (War ends 20-ish years earlier AU)
Lost in a forest and feelings (Sokka and Azula reconnect over a trip to find Space Sword)
"As if that would ever happen" (A scene of Azula and Sokka talking briefly before the birth of their second child)
"I lost my clothes and need to borrow yours" (Sokka and Azula start a somewhat-secret relationship in Republic City)
Boy that was not easy xD I actually feel like 5-7 are all tied, to a fault. They're all pretty fun to revisit whenever I want to, but I guess the four at the top win for me. Yakuza AU is definitely my absolute favorite from 2020, though. It just never gets old for me.
Underneath Starlit Skies (2021)
Now, this time I was ambitious purposefully... and I paid for it through making even bigger stories than before :'D to be fair, I was already writing Gladiator Part 3 at the time and Underneath Starlit Skies really helped me regain my mojo so I could energize myself and keep going with my big fic. So! What shall my ranking look like now...?
Wounded (Yakuza AU sequel)
Happy Family (... Yeah, well, I'm just gonna whistle innocently now...)
Body Swap AU (... self explanatory?)
Each other's punishment (Antarctica AU)
Jealousy (Band AU)
Prince Sokka, Peasant Azula (Dragon Age: Origins AU)
TDOBS: Sokkla happens (Azula captured by the Gaang AU sequel)
Pregnancy (Dark Ursa AU sequel)
Meeting the in-laws (War ends 20-ish years earlier AU sequel)
I admit, the sequels from this year were a lot of fun to write but the new ideas I had for stories just took over me, big time...
... 'cept for Yakuza AU because that one just drives me crazy. I admit I think it's possibly the strongest AU in all of my Sokkla Saturdays entries, though I can't pretend to be objective enough to say for certain, haha. Anyway, I liked the sequel even more than I liked the original and that's saying a lot, considering the first entry for Yakuza AU is my favorite for 2020 :'D And yeah, the Happy Family situation was way too entertaining to write, all those family dynamics were a thrill to explore when I finally had a chance to. Then, the body swap AU was such a strange way to get out of my comfort zone, but it worked fairly well and I really enjoyed it because of that. Very introspective even in all its ridiculousness, haha.
Leap of Faith (2022)
Oh, boy. I really wanted to make more sequels this year. Which might look like a weird thing to say considering how I haven't ranked my sequels all that high, but I really did want to. It's kinda sad to me that I could only do it with two stories when there were so many that required them... but let's hope the prompts are better for sequels in the future, huh?
Alright, and so...
Toph matchmaking Sokkla (Sokka and Azula work together to stop a conspiracy to kill Zuko... in a rather unconventional way)
"Blue looks good on you" (Sokka and Azula are agents of the White Lotus)
College AU (D&D AU)
Each other's firsts (Childhood friends/basketball AU)
Caught off-guard (... ehem. Again, I'll just whistle innocently here...)
Academic rivals (Azula and Sokka attend Ba Sing Se University)
Sokka dresses Azula (Dragon Age: Inquisition AU, sequel to Dragon Age: Origins AU)
Falling in love (Ursa doesn't erase her memories but changes her face anyway and comes back to the Palace as a servant AU)
Flustered Azula (Antarctica AU sequel)
... I admit this one feels a little deceptive X'D some of the lower rated ones were actually pretty solid entries but I have no idea what the hell was going on with my emotional state at the time. Even upon revisiting them, I wound up thinking the story had turned out to be a looot better than I thought it was upon writing it, and yet something about how I felt while writing those chapters just didn't feel entirely smooth, somehow.
ANYWAY! Doesn't change the fact that Toph matchmaking Sokkla has ended up becoming one hell of a favorite for me. Even then, it's kind of difficult to argue that it's my absolute favorite because "Blue looks good on you" absolutely took over my life and ran away with me. And College AU makes me laugh like such an idiot every time I revisit it, too. So while I thought I might not have that much to offer this year because the prompts reeeeally didn't allow me to work with a lot of sequels, I ended up finding some ideas I wound up obsessed with X'D so I really can't complain about what I managed to make this year.
Anyway, this is my personal ranking for all my stories since 2020. I really don't think I was majorly dissatisfied with any entry because, if I had been, I outright wouldn't have posted them :'D I do think my first two entries for 2020 are the weakest of the lot since I really hadn't committed to coming up with major stories at the time, and I really thought I'd take this event easy... :'D oh, what a summer child I was. Fast forward a few weeks later and I was possessed by the wild need to tell the Yakuza AU as best as I could and mourning the fact that it had ended too soon x'D
If you have your own favorites, feel free to share too! It's always great fun to know about the impact my stories have had on readers, especially the rarer ones that seem to fly under the radar. I learned about two years ago that some readers reeeally loved my White Lotus International Games story, and I actually had thought that one had just gone completely unnoticed, and this year, a lot of people were thrilled to see an artwork depicting The Love Advisor's scene of Azula and Sokka reading their tragic romance book together xD so yeah, if you want to talk about the stories you liked, feel free to share your thoughts! :D

ATLA AU where everything is the same except the main characters are all in their 60's/70's.
Aang is an old, happy-go-lucky bachelor grandpa when he's unthawed from the iceberg and is scandalized that he missed 100 years of war when all he wanted to do was enjoy some penguin sledding during his unofficial retirement.
Katara and Sokka are the Elders of the Southern Tribe still. Katara is a purely self taught water bender who tales no crap from anyone. She's too old to care about gender roles anymore and if she wants to joyride on Aang's lit sky bison her grandkids can just TRY to stop her. Meanwhile, Sokka is the geezer who can't stop telling exaggerated stories of his world travels when he was younger, and starts most of them with "back in my day!"
Toph is chilling in Gaoling at the Beifong estate, having spent most of her life sowing chaos in the earth kingdom as the Blind Bandit guerilla warrior, but now her knees ache and she's sick of cooking in the morning so her folks will just have to deal with her crashing at their place until she gets bored. By the time Aang skips along looking for a new buddy, Poppy and her husband are practically begging him to take Toph with them.
As for Zuko and Azula.... over six decades of intense sibling rivalry would have to be legendary within the fire nation. By this point, they are technically both retired from the line of succession (either because the old fire Lord is ANCIENT or Zuko/Azula were deemed to old *cough eccentric* for the throne) and are dueling in a series of escalating bets to finally end their rivalry. Currently, whoever can catch the avatar first wins.
Bonus: Jet is still a 16 year old Punk and Katara refuses to see anything wrong with this "sweet young man." Sokka hates how she spoils the youngins. Back in his day it was eat or be eaten, none of this coddling nonsense!!!!

Some Modern AU ideas
(ships: Zukka, Bakoda, White Lotuses)
-Sokka and Zuko are theatre actors and are the lovers in love amongst dragons
-Dance AU
-Dance AU but zuko does ballet
-Hakoda and Bato do gay male covers of love songs for their youtube channel
-zuko gets paid by Aang to watch his pets, Momo the cat and Appa the dog, and when he goes over he ends up hanging out with Sokka, aang’s roommate who is apparently not to be trusted petsitting those two alone.
-the white lotuses own an orphanage together
-Modern But Still The ATLA World (any of the above and below can apply to this)
-aus where lu ten died in various ways or survived said ways
-king kuei x lu ten modern au
-this really doesnt make canonical sense but modern au where hakoda and bato meet while dropping off their kids at daycare (except bato’s “kid” is his friend’s who is busy)
-this works for either modern or canon-timeline au where their partner soulmark is the emotion they’ll feel when meeting their soulmate (zuko’s and sokka’s both say anger, hakoda’s says pain, bato says confusion/tiredness)
-aang is a demigod
-highschool au but gyatso and the white lotuses are the teachers
-age swap highschool au where gyatso and the white lotuses are the students and the gaang + friends are the teachers
-unexplained au where aang is the eldest of 5 siblings (roku, kyoshi, yangchen, and kuruk)
-the gaang are a rock band in a battle of the bands event, azula, mai, and ty lee are another band, and the white lotuses are another. its absolute chaos and zuko is trying to look like hes not related to iroh, who’s hideous fashion somehow translates to black punk clothes. (who wins is up to you but personally i find it hilarious if the white lotuses win)
-their just all furries

Electrons Fic Masterpost
Fight
My first AO3 fic, started long ago. Inconsistent quality. Frequently interrupted by unpleasant IRL events. Controversial ending. Complete.
Zuko makes the decision to join the GAang during CoD and the story goes completely AU after (and before) that. The fic is mostly about dealing with the trauma of childhood abuse and cultural differences.
Juxtaposition
In progress. Inconsistent tone. Funny and angsty in a way that could be intentional tonal dissonance or could be bad writing, for you to decide.
Teenage Lu Ten finds Aang instead of Zuko. He's a bit more of an entitled dumbass than Zuko was and way less traumatized (for now). This fic is mostly about complicated family dynamics and becoming a better person.
Silence
Little mermaid AU! Just kidding, unless... In progress. Scary AF. The story many people have told me they tried to read and had to abandon because of the spooky elements.
The GAang battles spirit shenanigans of many different types while also struggling with their identities and trauma. This story is about self-expression and being/finding your authentic self.
The Avatar and the Doctor
First story is complete and works as a standalone. Will eventually (hopefully) have five stories, one for each modern Doctor (no, War isn't invited, sorry Mr. Hurt). Premise seems like crack, but actual story is weirdly very sincere and heartfelt.
The Doctor lands the TARDIS on the Avatar world and befriends the GAang. They go on adventures, both in the Avatar world, Earth and [redacted]. Time travel abounds! Suki gets to talk to Kyoshi. Fun is had. This story is about combining my two favorite completely dissimilar franchises and weirdly (IMHO) making it work.
After the Comet
Is this even still a thing? IDK. In progress (I guess). About the struggles of post-war reconstruction. I had lots of plans for this. They're unlikely to ever materialize. I had a whole thing about Katara's complicated relationship with motherhood, gender dynamics, the diaspora, etc... Anyway...
The GAang tries to heal the world while also coping with their own struggles. This story is about perception, ours of ourselves, others of us and ours of others. It's also about how impossible morality is sometimes. Oh, and birds; it's about birds.
Tag-along
The in progress story that started out as random musings and became the story I get asked to update the most. Is formated nonlinearly, wasn't a super popular choice. I'm in the process of rearranging the chapters to make it a linear story.
Aang and Zuko are age-swapped. That's it. That's the plot. I mean, there's more to it than that, but you get it.
Covenant
In progress. The fic I spend the most time thinking about. I have this plotted out all the way to the end. If I actually finish this, it will probably be the longest thing I ever write. I'm not even 2% through it though, so...
This is an "element" swap with a bit of a twist. Katara is a war child and a Firebender, while Zuko inherits waterbending from Avatar Roku. This story is about the many different types of love as well as self-acceptance.
When My Name Was Keoza
In progress. Probably. Odds are I will abandon this soon. This story is based on my favorite book from my childhood, When My Name Was Keoko, about the Japanese occupation of Korea during the second world war. I was a very fun kid.
Katara is discovered to be a Waterbender and taken away from her home to the Fire Nation, in a way similar to how Native American children were often forced into reservation schools. She is raised to be a loyal Fire Nation citizen, and this changes, well, everything. This story is about cultural genocide.
Other
A comedic Salvage spin-off where Zuko gives people The Talk.
An abandoned WIP where Yue finds Aang instead of Katara.
Two gift fics for an exchange event about Hama and Jetko.
Whatever the hell This is.

Would you ever do an age swap AU with Aang being the oldest/more mature (and no interest in Katara, he's basically babysitting the Gaang)
I have seen this done a couple of times (a fic I can't recall the name of right now, and a comic that's made the rounds on Tumblr a time or two), and I've liked it, but I don't know if I would do it though. I rarely say never on a fic idea, but I don't currently have any idea of what I would do with this scenario that would be much different from what I've already seen done. I guess my answer is I would if a good plot idea struck me.

okay atla sibling roleswap au (zuko and azula swap, iroh and ozai swap, sokka and katara swap)
sokka is the only waterbender in the south pole, and he and katara both try to protect each other - after the death of their mother, katara vowed that she wouldn’t lose anyone else, and trained as a warrior. she’s still caring and fiercely protective, but it manifests as wariness: she’s seen what happens to benders, and doesn’t want sokka to get hurt. sokka doesn’t fully understand his powers, and doesn’t know if he wants to, but comes around when he realises that he really can help the world with them
the fire nation is supposedly moving into a new era of peace and harmony - azulon died at around the same time that ozai went mad and disappeared, when his two children were still very young, leaving iroh to take the throne. he has an excellent public image, as a wise and benevolent ruler, but is impossibly good at pulling strings and will put the well-being of his family above all else. he never got over the loss of his son at ba sing se, and intends to use the avatar as a weapon to take out ba sing se and bring peace for good, by ending the war
azula was ozai’s younger child, never a prodigy, and never her uncle’s favourite. her older brother was a firebending prodigy, and sweet and open in a way that appealed to iroh, reminding him of himself at that age. azula was always closed off and antisocial, and received little love from family or friends. she was told that her father burned her face when she was very small, when he lost his mind, but isn’t sure how much she believes that. when she heard of iroh’s plan to get the avatar on the side of the fire nation and use him to wipe out ba sing se, she ran away on a stolen ship, aiming to find and kill the avatar before her uncle can reach him, for the good of everyone. the fire nation encourages the idea that she was as mad as ozai, a danger to herself more than anything
she shaved her head and wears a hood to hide her identity, and is unrecognisable as the missing princess. she’s intensely paranoid and trusts nobody, especially if they come across as too nice. she constantly talks to herself, and hallucinates an idealised version of ozai, who cares about her more than zuko and always validates her worldview. in book 2, she joins the kyoshi warriors, growing her hair out to a pixie cut - initially, she’s with them just to blend in better, but as she spends more time with them, she begins to embrace the idea of fighting in a sisterhood, which is derailed by zuko infiltrating the city in the disguise of an upper-level tea server. in book 3, she finds out that iroh had her father killed, and joins the gaang to train aang to kill the firelord, not understanding that aang is a pacifist
zuko’s a people-pleaser who’s much more confident in himself as a result of being iroh’s favourite and protégé, and under iroh’s tutelage his diplomatic skills are very well developed - he’s calm and polite and extremely manipulative, with a warm smile and nothing behind the eyes. he emulates iroh’s way of dealing with problems, and looks up to iroh as his real father. iroh adopted him as crown prince after the death of lu ten, so zuko has been raised to rule like iroh does. he believes that his uncle would always do the right thing, and repeats iroh’s proverbs verbatim. he speculates on what iroh would do before making choices
his task is to persuade aang to help the fire nation, so he presents as azula’s good brother, who only wants the best for the world. he opens every encounter cordially, regardless of whether or not he just tried to kill someone. behind his careful diplomatic politeness, he does have strong, if skewed, morals, but would never believe the worst of his beloved uncle. he finds azula’s talking to herself embarrassing at best and disturbing at worst, and looks on her with contempt and pity; on one hand, she’s going against his uncle, but on the other, she can’t help being mad. he breaks down when he realises exactly how much iroh isn’t telling him, and that azula was right all along

Avatar Things I Still Wanna Write:
Toph And Aang Swap Elements: The Rocks Don’t Fly AU. Aang is still the Avatar, though born around the same time the rest of the Gaang are. Aang discovers he can bend fire (on top of already being a talented earthbender) when the orphanage he lives in goes up in flames, killing Gyatso and a bunch of the other orphans. He leaves Omashu with Bumi (his BFF) because the last two Avatars have tried and failed to stop the war and they both know that the Fire Nation is on the hunt for the Avatar (there were rumors about the WT Avatar dying years ago, but nobody knows anything for sure ... well, Aang and Bumo know now). Kuzon is a child from the colonies and a distant cousin of Bumi’s. They pick him up along the way (somehow) to teach Aang firebending. Airbenders have survived in this AU, obviously, but they live hidden in the mountains and most people believe they’re completely gone. The boys stumble over their settlement lead there by some visions and Toph saves them from execution and goes with them. She’s one of the youngest airbending masters (maybe the), and would have no reason to hide her bending prowess in front of her community, because obviously they’d train any bender properly; there’s so few left of them. Zuko is still tasked to find the Avatar (a quest not quite as hopeless as in canon bc the last reports of an Avatar sighting only lay back thirteen years, not over a hundred) and still rams into Sokka and Katara’s village. He takes Katara prisoner because she’s a waterbender (and he can’t bring himself to kill her). Sokka follows him (no bison, no nothing, he doesn’t even have a proper a ship, it’s a miracle he doesn’t die) and probably joins forces with the Kyoshi Warriors at some point (maybe all of them, but at least Suki). They all meet at some point, obviously. First Aang, Bumi and Kuzon meet Toph, then they meet Sokka and Suki, then they meet Zuko and Katara (and Uncle). And then they take down Ozai.
Monsun oder Der weiße Tiger: This is one of my favourite books. It takes place in India and tells the story of Gopu and Bapti, one of whom comes from a very poor family, the other of whom is the son of a rich textile merchant (I think he was). Bapti meets Gopu when he’s in Bombay with his family to meet his older sister’s future fiance and, because he is desperate for friendship, convinces his father to hire the other boy. And it goes from there, it really is an awesome book (in my opinion). This would be an AU very heavily inspired by the book (just like the Charlie Bone AU I’m writing right now). Aang would be Gopu and Zuko would be Bapti (bending ages a fair bit). Azula is Zuko’s older sister. Katara is Rissa, one of the maids, and Sokka is Bip, Rissa’s father and the cook (though Sokka gets to stay Katara’s brother). I might make Toph and the Duke the Mäuseriche who live in a hole and survive by catching and selling mice. Haru’s Shangji, who helps Aang/Gopu on the streets, and Guru Pathik is Mangar, who teaches him to be a snake charmer. I don’t know what I’ll do with Suki, yet, though, because I’ve given away most of the important roles. Maybe she’d just be a friend of Haru’s. Bending’s still a thing, but I don’t know yet if Aang’s still the Avatar or if there ever was a war.
Kummi/Taang/Koh: I’m still busy planning this, and at this point, I figure maybe I should just start to write or I’ll never do it. This would be my take on the Kummi/Taang theory, obviously, and in case somebody doesn’t know what that is: The gist of it is that Toph is the re-incarnation of Ummi, Avatar Kuruk’s lover who he lost to Koh the Face Stealer. It’ll feature Sleep Deprived Aang, amongst a lot of A(a)ngst and also Group Hugs, so that’s gonna be fun. Currently runs under “More Than One Lifetime” (though I think that’s a bit cheesy, but then, I’m super bad with titles anyway).
More Taang Fluff: That’s it. No specific ideas. There’s just never enough of it. The trouble with rarepairs.

I was thinking about your Azula-Zuko age swap au (cause adorable XD) and I couldn't help thinking that little bby Zuko would think Mai and Ty Lee were just as amazing as his big sister, and that just like he'd be asking Azula for firebending lessons he'd be asking for knife throwing and chi blocking lessons too~ Azula is both proud her littlest minion is making himself as useful as possible, and jealous he's giving others as much attention as he gives her~
The Gaang's initial impression of Age Swap Zuko: This precious child is too naive to live.
Two weeks later: This precious child could kill us all.
Aang is just quietly having a panic attack, because Toph says Zuko is not lying at all when he says he's the weakest member of his family. And Zuko is some kind of crazy ninja chi-blocking swordmaster who deliberately tried to get struck by lightning in that storm last night "because Uncle never lets me practice", WHAT KIND OF UNTOUCHABLE MONSTER IS OZAI IF THIS IS HIS SON?
Friggin OP end bosses this isn't fair--

Hi! For your Gaang Age Swap Au: does Toph still leave the Gaang for a bit in the Search? Does she meet Iroh before he gets Azula's fire blast to the chest?
Universe tag: #Gaang age swap AU
She does indeed. But in a universe where she shares with Aang the distinction of being the eldest rather than of being he youngest, it takes on a different flavor. Because Aang and Katara see her as one of them, almost a grown up, someobe who should help look out for Sokka and set a good example for him. And Toph's like, whoa, wait a second, I'm not his older sister. I did not join up to nanny a snot nosed twelve year old.
Sokka is like, I am not snot nosed! But he is ignored.
Her meeting with Iroh is very different, however, since his nephew has only just given him the slip to go haring off after Toph's erstwhile travel companions. So when she meets him, he's all, hey, an you help me look for my twelve year old nephew? And Toph's like, you got to be kidding me.

Azula and Aang (not necessary as a ship but as a potential friendship - in canon or an AU)
oh I really really like the friendship potential here. in canon, i think it would take a long while – I imagine Aang might be quite wary/sheepish around Azula for a bit, at least until he’s older, simply because she tried to kill him & his friends a number of times, and would need time to process that, but I like to think that as an adult I can imagine him wanting to reconcile and help her on the path towards redemption after she’s taken a few positive steps (e.g. apologising to people, rebuilding a relationship/reconciling with Zuko) and be a supportive figure there. In the show, I think Aang really *needs* to believe that the Fire Nation aren’t inherently evil, because that’s core to the worldview the Air Nomads taught him & his friendship with Zuko is very important in that regard, and I like to imagine that he’d equally want to offer an olive branch to Azula once she shows signs of being receptive to one. I imagine for Aang he’d hope it’d help him process those events (whereas I imagine other characters, e.g. Katara, might prefer to have limited to no contact) & I think he gets genuine fulfilment out of helping set Azula on the right path.
As for how it’d turn out, I like to imagine actually it’d progress beyond ‘helping Azula’, beyond shared meditation sessions and rather profound discussions about differences between Fire Nation and Air Nomad outlooks, to a friendship that is actually full of fun and mischief? I think Aang serves a similar role here that he does to Sokka (who in S1 is always complaining about goofing off too much and wants them to stay on track) in that he introduces a lot of levity. Azula puts a lot of value in formalities and titles imo, and around Aang she can let go of that in a way that is rather liberating? They tease each other. They goof off a little. She gets to laugh. But also, so does he. I think as a fellow prodigy with a title and responsibilities of an adult, I think Azula would empathise a lot with what Aang has to handle, even if at first she thinks he should perhaps use his authority/titles more to push his way through situations, she comes to respect his approach despite the differences, and ends up being someone Aang comes to for advice regarding certain matters eventually. I also imagine Azula being a fiercely loyal friend and defender of Aang.
I imagine in a role-swap AU (i.e. Zuko takes Azula’s role as s2-3 antagonist, and Azula gets a fleshed out redemption arc instead) it’d probably turn out very similarly! Azula accompanies the gaang because she believes ‘it is practical’ but might not believe in the main mission or see herself as part of the group (at first) and Aang tries to convince her to really commit, so there’s this intellectual element to it at first, but as they become closer, I think Aang helps her relax/be less ‘uptight’ (as the others would see it), act her age for once instead of a little soldier. Again, I think they’d be quite mischievous actually, and maybe mess around a little (in a non-destructive way for once) or go on adventures. This is just a personal headcanon, but I like to imagine Azula, who insisted on being the hero whenever she and Zuko would play-act together, once always dreamed of going on big adventures and being a hero, but buried that aspiration as ‘a childish dream’ when she began to take more responsibility, and that Aang allows her to realise what she thought was just a foolish little idea.
Anyway I think they have good friendship potential! I very much see Azula as a lesbian tbh so I don’t ship it personally but I wouldn’t necessarily hate reading a well-written romance in an AU situation (e.g. a roleswap situation) where Azula doesn’t hurt Aang or his friends in the same way she does in canon. I think it would need to be handled carefully though

Gender swap au for atla?
i didn’t change names so it would make more sense. also only swapped the gaang, iroh, and azula
first off, aang is raised in the western air temple by the monks and in addition to taking a special interest in flying bison (as that’s where they’re raised), she also is repeatedly told that she takes after avatar yangchen. it isn’t until the monks tell her she’s the avatar that these comments finally make sense.
for the record, i personally hc aang as not giving a shit about gender but i figured i’d add some fem!aang anyway
aang is flying appa down to the southern air temple on a routine trip when the storm hits and she is forced into the avatar state
sokka is a non-bender and the eldest child of the southern water tribe’s chief. a natural fighter, she’s majorly pissed off when her father refuses to let her come with the other troops, both because of her age and her gender. she tries to act like the big sister to all the young kids left behind, but secretly she wants more than this.
katara, unlike his brother, doesn’t care much about fighting, even though he’s a waterbender. as the oldest boy in the tribe, sokka pours all her efforts into trying to shape him into the warrior that she isn’t allowed to be. it’s pretty futile.
zuko’s story is mostly the same, though with some added misogyny from ozai. she’s the eldest, so it’s expected that the crown will go to her, but her firebending is weaker and ozai prefers her brother, azula. it’s only a matter of time until she steps out of line, which leads to the agni kai and her banishment. rumors circle that she was disgraced solely so her brother could have a clearer path to the throne.
aunt iroh experienced the same thing after losing her son. she tries hard to teach zuko that she is not weak because of her gender or how others perceive her
suki is kickass no matter what. he’s the first person to treat sokka like a true warrior, which is MAJOR heart eyes
the series happens pretty regularly, with the exception that katara isn’t treated poorly because of his gender, but rather because he dares to support sokka as a warrior in her own right. pakku doesn’t like this.
toph has the added pressure of being the only son of the beifongs and still being treated like he’s helpless. otherwise, he’s pretty much the same as in canon.
i also hc toph as nb but i’m going with canon here
ty lee and mai are still girls because i like badass girls. also because someone needs to make sure azula drinks his respect women juice
zuko’s redemption arc is mostly the same, but also includes overcoming internalized misogyny with the help of sokka
kataang can still be endgame? idk i’m a zukka/zukki shipper

THE POSITIVE & NEGATIVE
Mun & Muse - Meme.
fill out & repost ♥
My muse is:
canon / oc / au / canon-divergent / fandomless
Is your character popular in the fandom?  YES / NO / N/A
Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom?  YES / NO / i guess? he’s a thin prettyboy anyway
Is your character considered strong in the fandom?  YES / NO
Are they underrated?  YES / NO / N/A
Were they relevant to the main story?  YES / NO
Were they relevant to the main character?  YES / NO / THEY’RE THE PROTAG. / In theory, if they meet during the events of the game
Are they widely known in their world?  YES / NO.
How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL.
How strictly do you follow canon?
While I believe it’s entirely possible for OCs to be canon compliant, I do make Lanh a different kind of SOLDIER than the ones most others do. This is partly due to Lanh being a transplanted OC; he was originally from Avatar: the Last Airbender before I revamped him (and his two best friends) for Final Fantasy VII. The other reason is because it’s only logical that not everyone would react to the SOLDIER treatments in the same way.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutual.
Lanh is a former pickpocket who grew up homeless in Midgar before being picked up for SOLDIER
He was literally picked up for SOLDIER; one of the Project Boys* caught him pickpocketing and went “hey that could be useful.” * My heacanon is that it was Angeal but that part’s flexible.
Lanh stands out in SOLDIER because while he’s nowhere near as tanky as most others, his speed and reflexes are well into the First Class category, making him something of an outlier.
He’s ethnically Wutaian but was born in Midgar and has never left.
He’s a skilled mimic, specialising in Behemoths and Guard Hounds.
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).
While Lanh’s not necessarily ride or die for Shinra, he remains loyal to the company because-- what else is he going to do?
He’s really not interested in fighting -- if he has to actually fight, he prefers ambush attacks where he can be in, out, and gone before anyone figures out what happened. He’s best utilized as a sighthound, sent to flush out or chase down prey.
Most of his interests include making it to the next day; one of his biggest fears is dying.
What inspired you to rp your muse?
Originally?  Well, waaaaay back when, in 2009, I needed some background OCs the same age as the Gaang, to provide more points of view into what kind of people go into the Dai Li. Lanh and his buddies developed from there. come about.... nnnn.... 2013, I feel back into FF fandom. It was pretty easy to alter Lanh’s backstory for FF7 while still keeping true to his original background. Swap Ba Sing Se for Midgar and Dai Li for SOLDIER. Perhaps a Turk would’ve worked better but I liked him in SOLDIER.
What keeps your inspiration going?
Man, who even knows? lol. Some days are better than others.
Some more personal questions for the mun.
Give your mutuals some insight about the way you are in some matters, which could lead them to get more comfortable with you or perhaps not.
Do you think you give your character justice?  YES / NO.
Do you frequently write headcanons?  YES / NO.
Do you sometimes write drabbles?  YES / NO.
Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day? YES / NO.
Are you confident in your portrayal?   YES / NO
Are you confident in your writing?  YES / NO
Are you a sensitive person?  YES / NO.
Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?
To a degree? Like, come at me about his background/stuff i get wrng about SOLDIER, but don’t tell me his personality is wrong. You don’t know him, I do. I made him.
Do you like questions which help you explore your character?
YES
If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?
Given that Lanh is my OC, damn straight I do.
If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?
The only one with any right to disagree is my friend Bex, who has written him in AtLA just like I’ve written their OCs. They were crucial to Lanh’s initial development and in fact helped me name him. Nobody else is allowed.
If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?
If you find ‘em, please do!
Do you think you are easy going as a mun?
I hope that I am, anyway....
That’s about it, congrats for filling out!
Tagged by: @stingslikeabee to spread the OC love! Tagging: i mean if we’re doing OCs then technically speaking @ancientblxde and @lovelessblade count. ✌️🏽 love you guys~

In reverse age au, is jet 12 or 16?
12yo!Jet would be. Bad. He would have even less impulse control
I think for the sake of the AU, we can say only the gaang has been age swapped, because otherwise things will get Messy
