Can you do more of the Lu Ten back from the dead AU?
That describes more than one AU of mine, so I have chosen the one where Zuko is brainwashed by the Dai Li, and while under Lake Laogai, finds his cousin. Continued from: [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], and [Link].
Aang wakes up, with, what must be said, is perfect, and perfectly awful, timing. Lu Ten is just about to make his escape, when the Avatar opens his eyes and starts having a freak out about being on a Fire Nation ship, and about how he failed to save Ba Sing Se from being conquered by Azula (Azula? His little cousin, Azula? That Azula? Conquered Ba Sing Se?) So of course Lu Ten does what all good little Fire Princes do, and tries to follow him, because that's the Avatar! He should capture him and take him home to the Fire Nation, and come out of his captivity covered in glory! His father and grandfather will be so proud.
So of course when Aang ends up stuck on some driftwood and washed ashore by the kindly Moon Spirit, Lu Ten ends up washed up, half drowned, on the beach with him. And he's still half drowned and wondering if he really saw the Moon Spirit, or just hallucinated that bit, when the Avatar's friends show up. After the hugs and reassurances, the question quickly becomes what to do with Lu Ten. The problem of course is several fold. 1) he is a danger, because he just tried to pull a Zuko and kidnap Aang. 2) He was pretty useless about it. Zuko could have done better in his sleep. This shows that Lu Ten is still kind if not fully with it, and kind of needs to be taken care of. 3) And Lu Ten's dad is in prison for helping them-
Wait what? His dad is in prison for helping the Avatar and a bunch of teenage enemies of the Fire Nation? His cousin Azula, who last he checked was eight, conquered Ba Sing Se? His cousin Zuko, who is ten, which is, he supposes, not much younger than the twelve year old Avatar, but still ("I'm pretty sure I'm thirteen now, actually, I mean dates are weird with the whole being frozen for a hundred years thing, but...") is not only trying to kidnap the Avatar on the regular, but is apparently doing pretty well at it ("uh, we wouldn't go that far... Also Zuko's sixteen, and Azula's like, fourteen, we think? It's not like she told us.") Oh okay, Zuko is sixteen. He was captive for six years? Six years? Oh. Oh okay. Okay. Wait, who had his dad imprisoned? What do you mean Firelord Ozai? How did Uncle Ozai become firelord if his dad is still alive?
What the Avatar and his companions tell him is confused and disjointed, but what what explaination he does get paints a bleak picture, especially when they tell him that both his father and his cousin said that Ozai, and/or Azula would probably kill him if they found out he was alive. Lu Ten has no idea what to do, and finds himself trailing along after a bunch of teenagers ("Toph's twelve") by default. And when one of those teenagers ends up being dragged off to school, and then getting in trouble at said school, and having to have a parent teacher conference, Lu Ten is the only adult in reach. He works out in his head how much older he would be than his supposed son. If the Avatar is thirteen, and Zuko is sixteen, and Zuko was born when LunTen was ten, he would have been a father at thirteen himself.
Fortunately for everyone involved, six (it's six, right? Wow.) years of captivity have aged Lu Ten beyond what is expected, and he looks far beyond his twenty-six years, old enough to pass as Aang's father. He does his best with stolen clothes and his reflection in a pool of water in the cave they've been hiding in. The Dai Li kept his head shaved, and it's only had a little time to grow out into a spiky fuzz all over his head. He looks like a disgrace, his topknot shorn, the delinquent father of a delinquent son. But it's the best he can do. He isn't exactly surprised when the principal threatens his "son" with being sent to the coal mines. He also doesn't believe a word of it.
After Aang holds his little dance party, amd they all have to run out of town, he finds himself on the road with a pack of children, and is baffled by how many "adventures they find themselves in, impersonating spirits (a Fire Nation town shouldn't be in this kind of squallor!), getting taught by Piandao (who Lu Ten stays well away from, since Piandao could recognize him), dodging assassins, and running into secret waterbending blood witches. That last one was horrifying in so many different ways. She wanted... She tried to kill him. She tried to force the others to kill him. She... Was, at least on some level, a captive like him.
And at the end of it all, when they meet up with the ragtag "army" heading to storm the Fire Nation capital, he hears about the eclipse. And he decides that while the rest of them are trying to take on Ozai, he's going to spring his father. So, he slips away during the fighting and heads for the capital prison tower. Hopefully that's where his father is being kept. And Lu Ten might not have Zuko's ability to break into and out of almost anything, but it hardly matters, because he has barely made it inside when his father, having broken himself out, runs into him, and they leave together.
All this means is that when Zuko (who never did tell anybody about his cousin being alive, which is going to make his tearful reunion with his uncle and cousin a little less awful) shows up to the Western Air Temple, the Gaang is short one Fire Prince. And now they have a new one. Yay! And once he starts to become friends with them, they've got a whole bunch of questions about just what exactly is going on with his family. And yeah, the answers he gives are, well, they are... Wow, Zuko, no wonder you're so messed up!

It's hard being the responsible adult. But at the end of the day, when all the little brats are safe and asleep around him, it's pretty wonderful.

I need more fics of Zuko working at a teashop with Iroh (be it Pao's (iirc) or the Jasmine Dragon) but he's just really fucking short. Because can you imagine, be it Jet, Katara, anyone who's met Zuko (either as Zuko or as Li) stumbles into the teashop, makes a scene and comes off as a bad guy because they bullied this little boy?
I think I've read just one fanfic where this was a thing and I need more people to adopt the idea.
I just think it'd be funny if Katara tried to do what Jet did (let's say this happened a few days prior to Azula capturing Ba Sing Se), left because she realized no one believed her, returned later with the rest of the Gaang, Sokka tried backing her claim, he ALSO gets reprimanded for making stuff up about a little boy, and meanwhile this is all happening Aang and Toph are having a delightful time with their new friend "Li." Should they do something? Maybe. Will they? Nah, anyways Li what tea would you recommend?

YES YOU WRITE FOR ATLAAAAA could you please write a fic where Katara is tickling Sokka, and like Sokka calls Toph for help, but Toph just raspberries him and walks away lol, she would not even have a shred of empathy lol
Instructions Unclear
Birds absolutely don’t shed like this and if they do it’s unhealthy, but go with me here. Based in and around the fire nation shenanigans in book 4.
“You are the most annoying little—“ Katara cuts herself off with a grunt of frustration.
“I’m a businessman, Katara. You gotta let me do business.” Sokka picks at his nails.
“You could’ve attracted unwanted attention!”
“Ah, but I didn’t. And now we’ve got a way to listen in on Fire Nation communications!” Sokka gestures enthusiastically at Hawky, preening and absolutely disinterested in his new ownership.
“Your bird is shedding everywhere!” Katara’s voice cracks in irritation.
“Relax, it’s just a couple of feathers! It means he’s healthy! Isn’t that right, my sweet prince?” Sokka pets the hawk and coos at it. It tries to nip his fingers.
“Just a couple?” Katara’s eyebrow twitches. She scoops a handful of feathers off the ground and shoves them down his shirt. It’s childish, but that’s the only way to deal with Sokka sometimes--stooping to his level.
“Katara!” Sokka screeches, trying his hardest to shove her away.
“Your actions have consequences!” She screeches right back. He manages to get his knee between them, but Katara has better leverage. On the next clump of feathers, Sokka giggles and flinches away.
Katara’s grin is positively wicked.
“No, nonono, hold on—“ Sokka scrambles to his feet and makes a run for it. Katara flicks out her hand and a tendril of water snags his ankle. He trips and she reels him in like an unruly fish.
Sokka’s always been a decent fighter--he’s an even better one now--but this is where Katara will always have him beat. She drops unceremoniously onto his back and starts tickling the living daylights out of him.
“Aang! Toph! H-Help!” Sokka giggles wildly, endlessly, and flops around like a beached manatee whale.
“Mmm…Nah!” Toph kicks her feet up on a rock stool. Sokka squawks in offense.
“H-Hawky! Attack!” Sokka points at Katara. Hawky flies away. For a moment, there’s nothing but the beating of wings and Toph’s impish little snickers. Sokka opens his mouth to defend himself, but Katara’s already spluttering in that high-pitched outraged tone of hers.
“Did you just try and sic your bird on me?” Katara gasps, drilling her fingers into Sokka’s stomach from underneath him. Sokka chokes on his own laughter and pounds his fists on the ground.
“I think Katara’s actually gonna kill him…we gotta help.” Aang tugs on Toph’s arm. She throws her head back with a giant groan.
“You’re killin’ me, Twinkle Toes,” Toph sighs, but she does eventually amble over to the massacre-in-progress.
“Toph, please, we’re partners in crime.” Sokka clutches at her ankle. Katara viciously tickles the backs of his ribs until he goes limp. He cackles and curls up tight on his side like a tigerdillo. It gives him enough leverage to roll over fully, but that doesn’t help him much. Katara worms her hands under his arms and Sokka squeals at an earth-shattering pitch, kicking his legs as if his life depends on it.
“Yeah, alright.” Toph sits down next to Sokka, her face alight with devilish intent.
Sokka and Katara both freeze. An electric silence hangs in the air. Katara really should’ve considered her escape plan, she realizes--
“You want help? Fine, I’ll help.” Toph’s grin is as wide and evil as Katara’s. She cracks her knuckles and Sokka sinks into the ground a bit, just enough for his elbows and ankles to be immobilized. Katara sighs in quiet relief.
“Help me! You’re supposed to help me! Toph!” Sokka shrieks, his eyes as wide as his nervous smile.
“Hm, should’ve been more specific.” Toph shrugs. She sweeps up a discarded feather and brushes it along his neck, pulling forth a string of hiccupy giggles that shake his chest. It’s a sweet sight, Sokka’s smile, and while Katara is fond of it…
“I think he’s had enough, Toph.” Katara hums.
“Oh, you wanna chicken out now? What about my fun, princess?” Toph scowls.
“I think you’ll survive without bullying me, Toph--” Sokka cuts himself off with a squeak, flinching away from Toph’s hands. She skitters her fingers over his sides, surprisingly gentle, and giggles bubble out of him without any hope of containment.
“Debatable.”
“That’s a good point. We wouldn’t want Toph to feel left out…would we, Sokka?” Katara makes a show of stroking her chin. Sokka’s whole face pinches in irritation, but every time he speaks, Toph squeezes his sides.
“Oi, Twinkle Toes! Get over here! Sokka needs help!” Toph yells, snickering all the while.
“I thought you’d never ask.” Aang materializes out of nowhere, a legion of feathers floating behind him. Sokka screams.
“Guys, guys wait, ohoho nohoho--”

@sightofthesun53 asked:
More stuff for the au where Zuko accidentally kills Ozai on the day of the black sun?🥹 I'm especially curious about his shaky relationship with the gaang.
Continued from [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], and [Link].
Okay, so I talked this a little bit in previous posts, but what's going on is that Zuko killed his father and then took the throne without ever joining up with the Gaang. So he never had the chance to form individual positive relationships with them, they never became friends, they never built trust, and the gaang never came to see Zuko as one of their own.
Cast your mind back to the Book Two finale. This is where Zuko's relationship with the gaang ended. Katara still smarts from what she views as a profound betrayel, when Zuko sided with his sister, after sharing a moment of understanding and commiseration over the losses of theit mothers. She views him as untrustworthy, and a danger to the people she cares about, and consequentally, to the fragile peace Zuko himself helped bring about. And Zuko does not exactly have a ready way to build trust with her. Or, as Zuko would think of it, get her not to hate him.
Sokka and Zuko likewise have a lot of baggage, not least of which is the fact that Sokka killed Zuko's sister, something both Zuko and Sokka feel differently about moment by moment. And of course, Zuko also killed his father, and if you think he doesn't have large and complicated emotions about this that he struggles to process or understand, well he does.
Aang wants to think the best of Zuko, and to trust him, and he's working on it, but that trust is still fragile, built as it is on a foundation of Aang's deliberate and self-chosen optimism. And Toph never really had to deal with Zuko at his worst, and she likes his uncle, so she's more or less willing to play nice. And Suki only knows him as the guy who burned down her village and released her from prison, so she's willing to see where this goes.
Basically, they are not friends. They aren't enemies, but they don't really like or trust Zuko, and there is nothing he can do about that, other than keep doing the right thing as Firelord. And half the time he has no idea what the right thing is. And with his uncle gone, because he has to be, and with only Mai and Ty Lee there that he can rely on, well, it's lonely at the top.

Also the way you write Jet like ooooh buddy that inner monolog is gonna be the death of you probably (most likely) Ngl I definitely have joined the Rasu fan club why is he so sweet help tbh I'd fall for his charms also thinking about what if he became friends with Reho I'd give our precious blabbermouth 2 minutes tops before Jee wants to murder him but Rasu takes him under his wing- introducing Smooth Talker 2.0 the tea shop couldnt handle all the new business. Ahhhhh there is so much more I could scream about this fic and probably will this is my first comment okayyyy ily byeeeeeee
(Still crying over Shen r.i.p. baby boy)
Omg please for Jee’s sanity do NOT put Reho in the teashop with him omg Jee would be on the first tram out of the city! Rasu is already on his nerves and the poor guy isn’t half as chatty as our man Reho lol.
Oh & not to mention Zuko is back so I’m sure Jees already gray hair will turn white from stress lol.

#au idea mumbling in the tags bc i refuse to post like a normal individual#saw some dweebs on twitter arguing abt aang vs korra and started thinking abt an a:tla au (vaguely and unseriously)#also ik this is already a prompt in the piarles server so i KNOW its been discussed already. but i think if i were to assign them bending#i would say firebender charles (obv) but i imagine pierre might be a great earthbender? like i get the appeal of giving him#waterbending bc literally who doesnt want to be a waterbender amirite. but earthbending feels SO underrated conceptually#pierre totally could have the grace to be a waterbender but he feels more ragged around the edges (To Me) thinking abt him bending#like very physical. toph-like in his ability to sense the world through his feet (not to her extent bc he's got his vision but you get it)#he's a steel worker (using normal abilities. not his metal bending) by trade and works with charles in the shop#(charles does use his bending there but he didn't want to enlist in the fire nation's reformed army)#they get along well enough. charles is a skilled fighter even if he hates it but he loves to spar with pierre with the blades they make#and pierre loves to hone his bending abilities through these little events. tries to learn to fight AND bend the blade at once#they also teach each other the bending footwork for each other's abilities. so charles can firebend like an earthbender#and pierre can earthbend like a firebender. something something soulmateism#anyway. thats my two cents! thanks for reading this nightmare paragraph.#AU tag

SRS 8/14/22
Alright, it's Self Rec Sunday!
For my first week, I'm going to start with a classic: nobody wants to pay the asking price.1
It's part one of my Toko (Toph x Zuko) canon-adjacent arranged marriage series, we all want love/we all want honor. It follows six-year-old Toph from Gaoling to the Fire Nation, explores her budding friendship with Zuko and her first few years in the palace, watches as she's shuttled out of the way once Ozai's rise to power makes her presence obsolete, shows how Iroh reaches out to her, and explains her choice to follow Zuko into exile.
I really love this fic. But it almost never existed.
As some of you may know, I didn't start out as a Toko shipper. And even once I did start shipping them, I wasn't thinking at all about writing fic for them-- I was working on too many other fics, I didn't have any story ideas, and even if I did, who would read it?
But then, right around the time I started Tumblr, I had an idea. And it would not let me go. So, reluctantly, I sat down and said, "well, it can't hurt to write one part, right? It's not like anyone's going to read it, so I may as well just put down whatever I want, right?"
And I wrote the entire chapter in one sitting.
I've always been fascinated by arranged marriage storylines, so it was really fun to set up one for myself. I had so much fun with the worldbuilding.
More importantly, though, was my development of Toph. The Toph in this series is not the same as the Toph we see in canon-- she occassionally behaves in a manner that could be viewed as rather OOC, and that is intentional. A big part of what makes Toph who she is is her history, and in this universe, her history is different. A Toph who's spent her whole life in Gaoling, competed in Earth Rumbles, and has never really had much freedom or friends is going to be different from a Toph who spent half her childhood in the Fire Nation, is friends with Zuko and Iroh, and has been given a little more freedom than she knows what to do with. This fic gave me a chance to really play with that concept and get a feel for what kind of character this Toph would be.
I love canon-verse Toph, but I've also got a special fondness for this version of her. I hope y'all will too.
1. "But LJ," you're saying, "isn't SRS supposed to be for fics that you think deserve more love? Why are you recommending your most popular fic?" The answer is that a) I never expected it to blow up the way it has and part of me still thinks of it as niche self-indulgence, b) if anyone here hasn't read any of my fics, it's a good place to start, and c) it's so close to a thousand kudos and I'd love it if we could get there by its second anniversary next month.

Would Sokka, Suki and Zuko form a band? And would they call it boiling rock (but Zuko still gets on stage with like... a grand piano or a violin or smth to make it more emo) ?
zuko plays the tsungi horn, sokka plays …
Tumblr media
this thing . and suki probably plays the pipa.
sokka writes the lyrics (they just flow out of him, he has a gift!), zuko edits the lyrics to be more poetical by employing more allusions and using more symbolic language, and suki sings (she’s the only one who can sing while she plays, but also, i genuinely doubt zuko or sokka would have nice singing voices anyway).
the idea of them calling their band the boiling rock is so funny it’s like the ultimate fuck you.
and most importantly, iroh gets to see his dream of zuko playing the tsungi horn during music night finally realized.
