On Sunday, the 4th of October, 1936, The British Union of Fascists lead by Oswald Mosley marched through the East End of London, then the home of the large majority of London's Jewish Population. The Met Police, expecting violence, escorted the 3,000 fascists with over 6,000 policemen, many of them mounted on horseback, as well as multiple vans and a spotter plane.
The largely working class locals of the East End took issue with this, and the counter-protestors (mostly anti-fascists, socialists, communists, trade unionists, and Jews, as well as locals of all stripes) overwhelmed the fascists and policemen by 10-to-1, fielding over 100,000 people (this is a conservative number).
The fascists marched in four columns, and all of them met resistance, but the majority of the action took place on Cable Street, a narrow road that the counter-protestors barricaded at multiple points.
The resulting fray went down in history as the Battle of Cable Street, and it's been the setting of lots of great storytelling since.
Notable in most stories of the Battle of Cable Street is the use of the slogan "They Shall Not Pass," or "No Pasaran," which remain anti-fascist rallying cries to this day.
I know the political horseshoe isn’t something new but it’s quite something to see how each end even talks using the same terms: “axis of exil” referring to washington, brussels, and tel-aviv (how they didn’t bat an eye at adopting it unironically from george bush underlines how insane it is); “zionist,” (regardless of their actual feelings toward jews) “globalist,” and “elites” as snarl words; an alarming insistence on assigning the origin of the world’s ills to a shadowy cabal (regardless if they’re antisemitic the word still fits) controlling everything behind the scenes; larp fantasies of becoming a foot soldier for their cause and enacting righteous violence against villains who deserve no compassion, only the guillotine
I sometimes fear that
people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress
worn by grotesques and monsters
as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.
Fascism arrives as your friend.
It will restore your honour,
make you feel proud,
protect your house,
give you a job,
clean up the neighbourhood,
remind you of how great you once were,
clear out the venal and the corrupt,
remove anything you feel is unlike you...
It doesn't walk in saying,
"Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution."
Its gotten to the point where 'big strong men' need to protect the 'poor vulnerable white women' from the 'evil transes and gays and people of colour' and if this sounds misogynistic its because it is
Could y'all please report that bitch Bob Cactaur and that bitch Csonka Dávid? I'm sick and tired of conservative bitches running around saying fascist shit while trying to play the victim.
Today I'm devastated. A post-fascist party has won the elections in my country.
As a non binary, bi woman I am angry and afraid. A party that wants us at home, cooking for our men, a party that has openly declared that they will try their very best to limitate my access and my right to abortion will now have power over my body.
A party that hates the poor, hates the lgbtqia+ community, hates the immigrants, hates people of colour, hates minorities will now have the power to give them hell.
I mourn for my country. I mourn for the poor, angry people who decided that voting these fascists will make their lives better. Guess what: it won't. They don't care about your life, which has been made miserable by their constant political action dedicated to enrich the already rich and make an obedient hate army of the others. It will only get worse.
And now that the fight against global warming and climate change will disappear from their political agenda, we'll see how our land will revolt against has. It already does, with floods and drought and water bombs and so on.
Hard times will come. I am devastated. I don't know what to say anymore.
