Note
Aight, so this is a weird post, but before the final bracket even started, a friend of mine and I got together and made a few hypotheticals of how we thought the bracket would play out. We talked over how we thought the final vote would be set up and came up with 3 separate potential sets of matchups (one based on alphabetical order of fears, one based on opposites, and one based on what we thought would be interesting). Then, we went through each one and tried to figure out who would be the most likely to win the entire bracket.
At the end of our debating, we separated our predicted winners into 3 categories, all of which are found on page 2 of the poorly photographed document: Final Predictions for Top 4, Final Predictions for Top 8, and the “Bracket Breakers,” which was just a spot for avatars we thought would pull out an upset. After we talked through those, my friend formatted it and I did a bit of math on the side, and here’s the result.
When all is said and done, I think we did a pretty good job. We even predicted some of the matchups that actually happened in the final bracket. Even though we didn’t get everything right, we had House as a lock for Top 4, so we got that going for us. Also, the two of us predicted that Ahab would win the whole thing, but that didn’t really pan out 😢
Disclaimer: This is based solely off of the opinions of two silly lads and is in no way an objective form of prediction. We just did this on a whim because we were feelin’ cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interesting Facts:
- Cecil Palmer, House, Captain Ahab, and Mystery Inc. each showed up in our final four sets twice.
- Clairmonda, Medea, Grimora, and Bugsnax each showed up in our final four sets once.
- The average bracket winner garnered 62.4375% of the total votes in each of their matchups in their respective entity brackets.
- The highest average total vote percentage in an entity bracket is Joy Wang (Vast), with 72.34%.
- The lowest average total vote percentage in an entity bracket is John Gaius (Extinction), with 53.82%.
- The largest single poll margin of victory was in the Hunt brackets, Captain Ahab v. Colonel Ives, with Captain Ahab winning at 86%.
- The smallest single poll margin of victory is tied between Samuel Vimes’ 50.2% to 49.8% victory over the Vashta Nerada in the Dark poll finale (757 total votes), and The Substitute’s 50.2% to 49.8% win over the Toy Soldier in the Stranger poll quarterfinals (601 total votes).
- In our “Interest Matches” bracket, we predicted the initial matchups of House vs Flesh Pit, and Ahab Vs GPT.
It’s been a really fun few months. Thanks for everything!
And in case you are wondering: Yes, we both have way too much time on our hands.
Interesting! I did consider some similar layouts to these when I was planning the poll, although I actually calculated the number of total votes for each winner rather than the vote share, as some of the finals got way more participation than others (interestingly, under this metric, the House was actually at the bottom of the list with only 213 actual votes)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Your consideration of opposites actually differed widely from mine -- I think the only three matchups we had in common were Dark/Eye, Vast/Buried, and Extinction/Non-Avatar. The others I had were Lonely/Corruption, Web/Desolation, Flesh/Spiral, Hunt/End, and Slaughter/Stranger (though admittedly that last one was just pairing the spares)
The one construction I tried that you didn't was just basic poll order (Eye/Lonely, Vast/Buried... Web/Non-Avatar), but I thought that was a bit dull.
Ultimately, I went with my version of the Interest poll, which was just me sorting them into a list of who I personally felt would best serve their chosen entity. This was mainly because it allowed me to choose violence and pit Slugpelt against Cecil. On the whole, I'm pretty satisfied with how it all turned out!

i’ve been sitting on this shit for like two weeks since starting rottmnt and watching the movie before realizing there was a whole other season i accidentally skipped so it’s time to combine the hyperfixations
this is probably gonna have to be at least a couple more posts cause i a.) haven’t finished rottmnt (so hush hush please and thank) and b.) i haven’t reached a solid conclusion for all the characters. these are just my opinions and i’m just another loser on the internet but you’re getting my opinion anyway
on that note...
what TMA entity i think each member of the rottmnt cast would serve/vibe with!
(spoilers for ROTTMNT and TMA obv)
just for those unaware, there are 15 TMA fear entities. they are the embodiment of the fears of humanity and were created as humanity learned to fear shit, as one does. they aren’t really physical things, more ideas that influence the “real” world.
starting off with a banger
Tumblr media
ms. o’neil!
ngl, april was one i really wanted to hit hard but wasn’t sure where to start. while i do love her as a character, she isn’t quite my favorite, so initially i didn’t give her much thought. entities like the dark, corruption, flesh, buried, vast, end, desolation, extinction, web, lonely, spiral, and stranger were out the door pretty much immediately; none of them really fit her character (corruption maybe just a tiny bit cause of her interactions with mutants but like. that’s pretty much it).
personally, i was leaning towards an eye-marked/avatar april with a hint of slaughter and a dash of the hunt. april is someone who very obviously LOVES learning given how often her schooling/assignments come up in the show and how often she geeks out over science stuff with donnie. the hunt mostly comes from her determination to get to the bottom of things regardless of the outcome. i threw the slaughter in there too bc i feel like april really wants to get into a fight with someone(s) at all times.
raph!
Tumblr media
(tiny boy. tiny. sobs loudly over him)
raph is one i didn’t want to go the obvious route for, but he kinda speaks for himself imo. he is very family-driven and cares deeply about his brothers; he serves as the leader (until leo takes his place anyway) and the powerhouse of the team and is very set on using his size and strength to protect his family.
raph is a corruption avatar with a pretty sizable helping of slaughter (most of if not all of the mutants are gonna be corruption avatars or corruption aligned but it probably won’t be the only thing for all of them). savage raph was honestly a big influence on the slaughter, but i also headcanon that baby raph had issues with his temper and had to learn to reign himself in cause he was built bigger and tougher than his brothers. he doesn’t let himself rage out often, but it’s fucking terrifying when he does.
mikey!
Tumblr media
(holds gently)
gotta love mikey!! he is so web aligned. i wasn’t sure about him for a while but then it hit me like a freight train. web. web 1000%. MAYBE a lil spiral if you wanna get a bit spicy. oh and he’s eye-touched.
in all seriousness, i fucking adore mikey (he’s not my fave either but still). his creativity and positive energy bring a whole kind of lively to the team and his family. he’s fun and upbeat and holy shit who was gonna tell me he’s 13 in the show. on top of all that, mikey is defo smarter than he seems, which fuels my web opinion. he has DEFINITELY used his youngest sibling status and his adorable face to manipulate anyone and everyone he has ever met to get what he wants. maybe not intentionally, but he’s done it. the spiral is honestly the closest thing i could think of that could relate to his ties to his mystic power. his eye ties come from the fact that he probably hears everything and everyone cause they assume he either doesn’t understand or he doesn’t really care. he does. he can and will use anything you say in a court of law. be scared.
splints!
Tumblr media
splinter was an interesting one to think about. i wanted to take his history into account while also keeping in mind the kind of person he is in the show and how he interacts with the people around him.
splinter is also a very family-oriented man after he picks up the tots, but i feel like he goes through major personality changes after his time in the battle nexus and his transformation. we can see hints of lou jitsu in splints every now and then, but it is painfully obvious that lou jitsu is gone and he’s not coming back. with that being said, i wanted to split splinter into two different avatars: lou jitsu and splinter (mostly cause i’m interested in exploring both of them).
lou jitsu is a slaughter avatar that is eye marked with sprinkled in lonely (cause what actor as popular as he was has many real connections. esp when he’s trapped with big mama). i feel like despite being blinded by stardom, lou jitsu was still a very smart tactician who could handle himself very well in a fight (hc that leo gets his quick battle analyses from splints/lou).
splinter is a lonely avatar with a healthy helping of corruption. splinter is less lonely in that he doesn’t have people around him and more that the toll that having his life falling apart in the span of like 10 minutes and being harshly cut off from everyone and everything he’s ever known is SO apparent. that kind of extreme isolation leaves its scars. i think that despite having his family around him, splinter still misses the people he used to know, even if he wasn’t as close with them as he thought. he misses the normalcy sometimes, even if he would never go back and lose his sons.
fuck it im splitting this into multiple posts. expect more bullshit in the future!

Here is a subjective ranking of the Magnus Archive's entities based on how well their imagery benefits their concept.
14. The Web
Part of the web's domain is the fear that you are having your strings pulled often in ways you are not aware of. Consequently often the web should be invisible with no imagery. None the less they usually use spiders and spider webs as a calling card for this entity. The reason this is the worst one is because spiders overlap with the corruption so heavily. And I find the spider imagery kind of distracting for some entities.
13. The Desolation
To start we should clarify that the desolation is the fear of loss and cruelty and is most commonly associated with fire. The main reason it is ranked so low is that pretty much every manifestation is related to fire, to the point that that landlord guy needs to point out that he can use cold too and it still works. They really need to diversify and have some manifestations that aren't fire based.
12. The Slaughter
This entity is similar to the desolation in that it has more to explore than just people at war. It is ranked a bit better because of its association with music. Grifter's bone kind of represents violence among civilians that is random like a freak accident which fits with the whole pain and danger could come from anywhere at any moment thing. I also think a good direction would be a highway and fears of car crashes.
11. The Flesh
From this point on the list most of these are solidly good. The next few entities are ranked here because they are a bit uninspiring because of how simple the concept is. Flesh is at the bottom because of how nebulous the concept is. Specifically the garbage truck episode stands out as having confusing imagery for a flesh entity. Otherwise the imagery of being eaten and altered is fantastic.
10. The Hunt
They really nailed this one. It's beasts and werewolves and blood. Straight forward, simple, uninspiring, the hunt.
9. The End
Death and the imagery around it is probably one of the most established ideas in human history. Success is as inevitable as the end itself.
8. The Dark
The dark is probably more real than any of the other entities. Then throw in some ambiguous monsters and you got it. Simple stuff
7. The Buried
At first the buried seems just as simple as the four below it, just throw someone underground and you're good, but I was on the magnus archives wiki and saw that this entity also includes being in debt. I suspect podcast didn't really develop this because writing about people in poverty can be depressing or punching down but I can totally imagine some shady business man saddling people with debt and making them feel like they are choking or the walls are creeping in.
6. The Eye
This one is also pretty simple but I rate it so high because I feel like they go above and beyond with it. Linking in glass buildings, cameras, obsession for knowledge. Good stuff
5. Corruption
I rank the corruption so highly because of how immediately recognizable it is despite how many concepts it tries to fill. A disease corruption avatar, an insect corruption avatar and a gross dog can all coexist and all feel like the corruption despite how different they are.
4. The Stranger
I will admit that this is my favorite entity so I might be biased. Clowns, taxidermy, and mannequins are all a bit obvious for the stranger but i feel like all of these concepts and their connection to the stranger have the room to breath and are diverse enough to warrant this placement.
3. The Lonely
The top three here get props for being creative for their concept. The lonely tends to rely on fog for a lot of its depictions but is by no means shackled to it. The suburb and the building that peter lukas tries to make and the faceless crowd stand out as great ways to depict the lonely.
2. The Vast
I think the vast is the ultimate encapsulation of filling out the entire concept. The vast encompasses things being too large to comprehend and falling. Entities that portray these somewhat different concepts don't feel the need to mark themselves with some kind of shared symbol the concept speaks for itself. The vast is rated so high because I feel like we have fully explored the concept in its range.
1. The Spiral
Some spiral entities have spirals or fractals thrown in so you know they are of the spiral but this isn't required. I rate this entity number one because the images compound on the idea. This entity isn't about lying it's about a fear that the truth is not the truth and obsessive delving into maddening logics like trying to follow a spiral or a fractal to the end.

Here it is: the TMA tribute I have been working on for ages, finally rendered in color.
[ID: a full color marker illustration of the 14 (+ the Extinction) and John and Martin from TMA. The page is split into fifteen even pizza slices, each with a different entity theme. On top, glued to the page, is a pen drawing of John and Martin on light grey paper.
John leads as they walk to the right, facing away from the viewer and holding up a hand, two floating eyes helping guide his way. A large backpack mirrors the one Martin is wearing, and John holds back a hand which Martin is holding. Martin faces the viewer as he walks forward, smiling slightly. From behind him, tendrils of fog encroach and curl around his foot.
On the pizza slices, starting from one o'clock and going clockwise:
The Vast shows an open sky with distant clouds, a rope ladder swinging across the expanse as a single occupant climbs upward. Below, clouds form into the heads of a massive crowd dissapearring into the distance, each head without a face. Underneath their chins, deep blue water stretches out.
The Lonely shows a ship in greyscale with the silhouette of Peter Lukas standing at the prow. Swirling fog fills the background, and in the distance a person's silhouette stands in a wide, empty street, where vacant buildings bend toward them, fog curling around their ankles.
The Web shows several objects suspended in tangled spiderwebs in front of the silhouette of Hilltop Road. In the web is the engraved web lighter, which is open but not lit, a cassette tape, and a bottle of wine. In the lower right, a large spider perches, its limbs testing the strings of the web.
The Corruption has a background reminiscent of worm tunnels, with shifting sickly yellows, greens, and browns. On the left, a woman in dark grey robes and a surgical mask shows green mold on her skin. A few flies rest on her face, and she stares at the viewer nervously. On her right, a green molding globe is stood upon by a large housefly, and a cheery green and yellow maypole stands. Further right, massive worms, about an inch long and with one silvery side, are obscured by Jane, who is wearing a large coat and facing away from the viewer, her skin full of holes.
The Dark is shown in mostly negative space. On the top, a lightbulb dangles next to a gaping mouth full of teeth and floating pair of eyes. Below, a darkened neighborhood of small houses is shown, in the darkness behind a large wolf and long, twisting tentacles hide. The front of the piece shows Manuela's anti-sun, producing a halo of darkness around itself.
The Hunt has a background of deep green pine trees, and shows a grey wolf with a dead rabbit clutched in its jaws, blood covering its teeth and staining that rabbit's fur. In front of it, there are two drawings of Daisy's wolf form. The first is a closeup on her face, where she tilts her head up, looking at the viewer and saying "RUN." The other is a full body of her hulking form, which is skinny and twisted, tufts of fur coming out of her torn shirt.
The Flesh has a pink and red background reminiscent of intestines. At the top, John's removed rib is haloed. Twisting bodies with extra joints, distorted skin, qnd incorrect proportions are piled below, and at the front, Jared smirks at the viewer, wearing a hoodie with a jarge letter "J", which shifts with strange growths that are barely hidden beneath it.
The Stranger had a red background filled with music notes. At the top, a mannequin has a face awkwardly pinned to it's own, the holes for the eye sockets showing the blank plastic below. A carosel is partially covered by Not!Sasha, who looks at the viewer, leaning in. In front of her, Breekon and Hope look at the viewer, wearing their work uniforms. At the very bottom, the apple from anatomy class grins, next to Nikola Orsinov, who is a mannequin with only a large toothy smile and painted on blush. She is wearing a red and yellow clown outfit with a large white neck ruffle.
The Spiral has a background of bright swirling colors. At the top, a smiling stick figure holds a steaming mug of coffee, a sign next to them reading "CAN'T SLEEP?". a vase, covered with patterns, is gripped on the edge by a greying hand. In the foreground, Michael Distortion waves, opening a large yellow door, within which another bright colorful pattern is swirling. The corridor continues behind, striped in various colors.
The Buried shows a silhouette of a person drowning, bubbles escaping their mouth. Behind them, rocks are scattered, obscured by a coffin wrapped in chains with a tag that reads "DO NOT OPEN". in the distance, tunnels in the ground weave.
The Extinction shows an expanding mushroom cloud blowing out the windows of crumpled buildings, a pile of indistinguishable debris and a rotting couch outlined in front a back sky that features a shattered moon.
The Slaughter has a dark brown background which has a floating tune of music overlayed. The Toy Soldier holds a gun to the left, grinning as it faces right, where the Piper stands. The Piper has three heads, connected at the neck. The one on the left blows into the bagpipes, blood running from beneath its green helmet. The center head faces the viewer, letting out a gutteral scream and staring. Hands, clasped in prayer, hover beneath the center head. The head on the right keeps its mouth closed, but blood and dirt leak from it and drip down its chin, a final hand brought to its brow in a salute.
The End pictures a stature of a weeping angel, obscured partially by a large skull. A book behind them reads "HIS CONSIOUSNESS FADED IN AND OUT LIKE THE TIDE. HE TRIED TO RESIST...". In the top of the slice, grey tendrils curl around a heart imbedded in a ribcage. The heart, which is red, is the only color in the slice.
The Desolation has a stripe of fire flicking across it. Beneath the stripe is a grey and smoky sky behind burned and blackened tree husks. Above the flames, a hand holds a cigarette casually, which smokes. Two candles burn, partially covered by a house whose windows belch flame.
The Eye shows a grinning silhouette with an illuminated eye. Three security cameras look in different directions, overlayed on top of a manilla folder that reads "CASE #I-SEE-YOU. STATEMENT OF..." A large tape recorder waits on the right, and a camera on the left. Words next to the human silhouette read "OUR EYES ARE NEVER CLOSED. WE ARE JUDGING YOU. WE SEE YOU, WATCH YOU..." At the top center, a staring green eye looks down at where John and Martin walk in the center.

I finally finished my Magnus Archives curio collection shadowbox piece! I imagine this as a piece Jonah Magnus or Smirke would have made when they were studying or classifying the Entities, or something Gertrude might have hung in her office. I've been collecting and making these items for a while waiting to get them just right.
Contents:
Top row left to right:
The Stranger: doll head with clown makeup, vial of human skin (real, and ethically sourced--it's my own, a callus that came off on its own. Yes gross, but it fits).
The Hunt: various carnivore teeth
The Eye: prosthetic eye, and representations of eyes from various cultures
The Web: A spider, and silk web extending over the others, I wanted to use red threads as a reference to the red string on a classic "conspiracy wall"
The Spiral: a door charm, an ammonite fossil with fibonacci spiral, and a clock spring arrayed overtop.
The Corruption: wasp nest piece and "worms" handmade from pieces of cicada shells and painted.
The Vast: fulgurite (stone made when lightning strikes sand), and bottle containing a small meteorite, plus some obsidian stars
Bottom Row:
The Slaughter: shell casings from types of bullets used in war and by police
The Dark: tiny dive helmet, the inside of the section is painted with the "blackest black"paint, hand sculpted polymer clay tentacles (also painted with the blackest black) emerge from the darkness to threaten the helmet.
The Desolation: spent matches burned to the base, when you let it go too long and burn your fingers trying to hold them. Dripped into the back is red sealing wax which caught fire instead of melting properly and smoked up my workspace (I probably should have done that part outside...I did not)
The Buried: doll hand emerging from soil that I collected from the woods near an old cemetery
The Flesh: Vial of meat (it's biltong, so it's dried but looks more meat-like than jerky does), several pathologic snake rib bones where the snake was injured but healed with the bones in a strange position-- one looks twisted.
The Lonely: old photo of a group all facing the viewer with their faces carefully scratched away
The End: clock faces, gaming die, bone chess piece, and a carved skull.

cats of the apocalypse mood board
[IMAGE ID: the image is a mood board of fifteen total square images organized into five rows of three. Each image has a different cat with the fear alignment written in the image, and each cat is in a pose that has a wholesome, tongue in cheek similarity to that fear. Going in order from left to right, then top to bottom the images are as followed. The Slaughter, a white cat is play biting a human shin. The Flesh, a brown cat is wearing a pink bunny ear hood. The Hunt, a white cat is mid air, pouncing on a human in bed. The Buried, a grey tabby is laying on a pile of dirt on its back, with dirt covering just its stomach. The Desolation, a brown tabby is pawing at a lit candle glass to knock it off the table. The Web, a calico kitten is being held by a human, it has no text but the image is from the Buttersquash is a master of psychological manipulation meme. The Stranger, a grey tabby has a post-it note stuck to its nose with a cat nose and mouth drawn on it. The End, a grey tabby is asleep in a cat bed designed with teeth to look like a cartoony monster's open mouth. The Eye, a black cat is looking straight up at the viewer and is so dark that its only visible features are its blue-green eyes. The Lonely, a wooden ledge covered lightly in snow has two cat paw prints. The Vast, a yellow cat is lounging precariously on a roof antenna while looking down at the viewer. The Corruption, a blue butterfly is landing on a tuxedo cat's up turned nose. The Spiral, a human hand has fingertip cover toys of four tuxedo cat paws and one tuxedo cat head. The Dark, a white cat in a dark room is illuminated by a small lamp at its feet which casts a large shadow. The Extinction, an i-cat music player toy from the aughts is pictured, it resembles a white robotic cat.

Uncensored version under the cut! Me and @pocketsizedquasar did some brainstorming together on what it would be like if Jon was physically marked by all the entities, not just the Desolation and the Corruption! And I decided to draw it! This was super fun but also very time consuming and kinda hard, needless to say this isn’t how I’ll draw them all the time, but it was super fun to explore regardless!
[ID: This is a drawing of Jonathan Sims from the Magnus Archives, depicting what it would be like if he received physical ‘marks’ from the 14 fears. Jon is a thin person with medium brown skin, with black wavy hair with streaks of gray. He is wearing a pale, desaturated green shirt and jeans and has a neutral expression on his face.  He looks as if he is walking forward, and his palms are outstretched. The marks shown are as follows, and all are labelled with text of the fear and a line pointing to the mark itself. There is a large streak of white in his hair, labelled as being the mark of the Lonely. A square on the top left corner shows his bare back with black tendrils and is labelled as the mark of the End. There is another square showing his shoulder, with a bleeding stab wound and pointing to a red stain on his shirt as the mark of the Slaughter. On his right, or our left, palm is a large red burn scar that covers the whole palm, and is labelled as the mark of the Desolation. On the bottom left is a square showing a close up of his face. There are three extra eyes above his eyebrows as the mark of the Eye. His eyes have black smudges coming from the outside corners, as the mark of the Dark. The whites of his eyes are green instead, and have rings inside, as the mark of the Spiral. There are small worm scars on his face labelled as the mark of the Corruption, and there are small worm scars all over his body as well. He is barefoot, and there are marks all over the tops of his feet in the shape of lightning, labelled as the mark of the Vast. There is a final separate square on the right showing his left half (our right) of his chest, and a large scar where a rib was removed, as the mark of the Flesh. On his left, or our right, palm is a web where the lines of his hand would be, labelled as the mark of the Web. There are also dark, jagged scars from an explosion all over his body, labelled on his arm as the mark of the Stranger. There is dust on his shirt, mainly on the shoulders, labelled as the mark of the Buried. Lastly, there is a scar across his throat labelled as the mark of the Hunt. On the top right is text in lime green font that says ‘You are marked.’ The background is a foggy gradient of very pale red on the bottom to gray. End description.]

174, The Vast, The Great Beast!! I love idea of the Vast very very much?? i've been looking forward to getting to this one for a bit, so i guess it’s not a surprise that my choices here were sort of…………indulgent. I looked at a couple excerpts to get the most out of that first word set in this huge, dramatic font—world looks extremely cool too—but with the bookended its and the decorated finial t and the content in between, i feel good about this compromise between all the factors. also indulgently, i have used every available special ligature in Garamond, both sts and the ct, and i am sort of sorry about it but won’t apologize!! they're not in obtrusive positions on the page and they’re all thematically important words. those are excuses, the fact is they are very pretty and i love them.
printed on Stonehenge; handset in Garamond and Wilhelm Klingspor Schrift.
the Buried : the Corruption : the Dark : the Desolation : the End : the Flesh : the Hunt : the Lonely : the Slaughter : the Spiral : the Stranger : the Vast : the Web : the Extinction

1: a picture of the entire broadside. it’s a 4.5 x 10 inch sheet with a deckle edge at the bottom. the first word of the excerpt, it, is in a large blackletter font; the rest is a much smaller book font. The line length varies, starting long at the top and roughly shortening as it goes on until the final line only has room for it. The overall shape is like the ragged edge of a cliff face.
2: a close-up of the top part of the broadside, to show the decorative first It.
3: a close-up of the bottom part, showing details like the special st ligature in understand, the two letters connected by an extra curl.
4: a close-up of the handset printing form, assembled from individual characters, focusing again on the bottom half and the word understand.
5: a close-up of the top part of the form, with the longer line lengths and other special characters like the ct ligature.
6: a picture of the blackletter It locked up in the printing chase.

aesthetics for the entities, part i + ii.   bold what applies to your muse, italics what applies situationally or only in certain verses.  this is based on a horror podcast;  potentially triggering and / or upsetting content ahead!
Carla von Closen
i.  the buried.   weighed blankets.  drowning.  the comfort of a loved one’s weight.  soil and sand piling on top of you.  hugging so hard it hurts a little.  cramped hiding spots.  letting out air underwater to sink to the bottom of the pool.  walls pressing in on you.  not moving from a position even though you’re cramping a little.  dragging the last second before you have to inhale.  lonely subways.  feeling like one with the earth.  a layer of dirt on you.  looking for something below.  cardboard boxes and tiny pillow forts.  hands calloused from digging.  knowing that your purpose is just below the surface.  entering your final resting place before it kills you.  a storm drowning you out.  dust and sand speaking to you.
ii.  the corruption.   insects.  a close imitation of the natural course of life.  an illness in a community.  a rag that dirties more than it cleans.  an untreated wound.  containment.  breaching containment.  unbreathable air.  fungi.  one with that you love.  one with what loves you.  a corpse unfit for a glass case.  hearing a song in the sound of tiny wings and legs.  honeycomb patterns.  an ecosystem within a person.  a curse passed on.  the hubris of a scientist.  an ugly death where a glorious one is owed.  blood on a handkerchief.  parasites.  something pushing up the sewer.  a mask to keep something out.  trypophobia.  knowing you belong.  death weeks after impact.  fever.  food that’s gone off.  pandora’s box.  death behind a glass.
vi.  the end.   the last page of a book.  nightmares that don’t feel like nightmares.  a skeletal hand.  the grip of the grim reaper around your throat.  existential pain.  ivory dice.  flatlining in a hospital.  gambling with death.  as old as the universe.  soul and spirit tied to an object.  a dream where you die.  closing your eyes for the last time.  the plead of a dying one.  knowing the fate of someone you know and being unable to prevent it.  a thousand cords tugging you towards your end.  skin that’s freezing to the touch.  an act of desperation.  someone’s life for yours.  an eternity spent alive.  the cost of your selfishness.  watching your own burial.  causing your own burial.  the smell of death.  numbness to fear.  words from someone gone.  meaninglessness of the actions or lives of single people in the universe.  multiple near-death experiences you refuse to die from.
vii.  the eye.   googling something you shouldn’t have.  eureka moments.  the unforgiving lens of a camera.  witness reports.  hidden libraries.  eyes of different colours.  feeling of being watched.  a death recorded in tape.  a tragedy you can’t watch away from.  endangering yourself for knowledge.  truth.  analog records.  a symbol of an eye.  a watch tower.  compulsion to document.  turning on recording devices without thinking about it.  saving the evidence before the person.  extracting information.  truth or dare, without the dare.  a thirst for knowledge.  books that speak to you.  coordinated shelves.  cataloguing systems.  voyeurism.  police report you can’t put down.  reasoning your way out.  smell of old papers.  books that read you back.
viii.  the hunt.   sharp canines.  sore calves after a run.  the scent of blood.  an adventure for the journey’s sake.  the adrenaline right before the kill.   a whistle’s echo.  the woods.  the doe eyes of a prey animal.  your own breath in the air.  sharpened claws.  being tracked.  fear of someone knowing your every movement.  hunting down monsters.  hide and seek.  running away only to end up where you started.  staying alive purely because the enemy enjoys seeing you run.  a set of footsteps behind you.  blood dripping from bare hands.  barks and growls.  focused eyes.  a victim going limp under your hands.  a mouth full of fresh blood.  catching the scent of something monstrous.  perfecting your craft.  peering into the dark and running after it.
ix.  the lonely.   an apartment too small for a double bed.  completely vacant streets.  waking up to see everyone gone.  fog.  point nemo.  a house too big to hear your family members in.  alone in a faceless crowd.  a mask with nothing behind it.  separated cubicles.  a deafening silence where joy should be.  a blinding spotlight.  the least missed in your friend group.  streets without lights in the windows.  isolation.  not truly knowing your friends.  your friends not truly knowing you.  need for silence.  fear of crowds.  staring into space knowing nothing is looking back at you.  a ship alone at sea.  depression.  knowing your friends are better off without you.  talking to someone only to realise they’re gone.  a family too large to notice you there.  safety in being alone.
x.  the slaughter.    a game of tag.   senseless violence.  a true crime hobby.  improvised weapons.  blinding rage.  intent to kill.  a horrific day in a quiet community.  a medal of bravery.  holding on to what validates your anger.  history books that spare no details.  an injury you want revenge for.  war.  counting kills.  songs of soldiers.  a knifeblock on the counter.  a pool of blood.  shellshock.  unspeakable horrors.  anger pushing you forward.  unimaginable pain.  not seeing who will hurt you but knowing the pain is coming.  a fully human monster.  an authority sending its lessers to their deaths.  kill or be killed.  unedited wartime memoirs.  a weapons collection.  not knowing the names of who you kill.  too many to remember.  loss of hope.  there’s no heroes in war.
xi.  the spiral.   sleep deprivation.  corridors you can get lost in.  maze puzzles that loop back on themselves.  losing possessions.  losing people.  losing your sanity.  corkscrew curls.  rows of funhouse mirrors.  optical illusions.  a separate reality.  walking through the wrong door.  delusions.  not knowing what your hands are doing.  blank spaces in documents.  hallucinations.  wrong proportions.  a nameless thing.  a place that has never existed.  doubting your own mind.  blind faith.  losing track of names, labels, categories.  distorted sound.  an imperfection in a glass that twists the view.  loss of time.  a garish colour.  doors that open to nowhere.  lies.  an unnatural laugh.  jokes and tricks.  illusions.  a doorway.  a sculptor with a wild imagination.  limbs in impossible angles.  doing what’s fun, not what’s sensible.  fractals you can get lost in.
xii.  the stranger.   wax figures.  a close approximation of a human face.  a borrowed appearance.  a strange smell.  glass eyes.  furs and pelts.  a dance.  a song of a choir.  the uncanny valley.  stitching yourself together.  the colours of a circus.  a puppet with no strings.  mannequins.  glitter and sequin.  a stranger you’ve always known.  someone strange in the place of someone you knew.  stolen identities.  stolen skins.  a machine imitating humanity.  the anonymity of a service worker.  hiding in plain sight.  uncomfortable to look at.  a faked accent.  concealing.  forgetting who you are.  forgetting who others are.  a replacement no one notices.  images that look posed.  the only one seeing the false face of someone.
xiii.  the vast.   open spaces.  carnival rides going up and down.  fear of heights.  endless infinity around you.  your insignificance in an universe.  stomach turning at a drop.  fear of not the crash down but the moment you slip.  the sway of a cable car.  an adventure holiday.  losing track of where the surface is.  miles and miles of nothing around you.  staring at the sky and feeling like you may fall into it.  loss of control.  a fall that doesn’t end in death.  glass floor to the view below.  terminal velocity.  the sound of wind in your ears.  a reach over the railing.  a jump from the top of the building.  falling into nothing.  feeling your feet let go of the ground.  a leap of faith.  motion sickness.
xiv.  the web.   undecipherable code.  a puppeteer holding the strings.  power over the weak-willed.  strings of fate.  manipulation.  an arranged accident.  a hundred minions doing your bidding.  cobwebs.  spiders.  a laid trap.  never voicing discomfort.  outwitting a cheater.  doing things without realising it.  red string across a corkboard.  finding something lost where you were sure you checked.  power over the unreliability of chance.  watching others dance for you.  an entangled death.  a thousand tiny legs and fangs.  shady forum threads.  something important gone missing.  suspiciously disregarded case.  a missing witness.  connections.  the world wide web.  power of victimhood.  gullibility.  no control over your own decisions.  an invisible leash.  mass psychology.  a horror film in the making.  scapegoat.  never remembering to ask for a name.
+  the extinction.   the end of an era.  apocalypse movies.  the alarms of warning systems.  a desolate landscape.  end of the world cults.  nihilism.  the last written history.  a changed world.  no survivours.  old prophecies.  a thousand predicted ends.  a new chapter.  an end with no escape.  catastrophes.  a calendar counting down.  breaking point.  overindulgence.

[Image Description: There is a circle with a black and white gradient surrounded by symbols in both images. Starting from the top and going clockwise, the symbols are: The Fibonacci spiral representing the Spiral, a spider representing the Web, a coffin with a black bottom for the Buried, a skull for the End, a gnarled tree with a flame pattern for the Desolation, crossed bloody knives for the Slaughter, a rabbit head with crosshairs on the forehead for the Hunt, a hanging carcass for the Flesh, a stylized analogue to the biohazard symbol for the Corruption, an eyeless, disproportioned, smiling, dancing mannequin for the Stranger, a closed eye for the Dark, a single dot for the Lonely, an open eye with multiple pupils for the Watcher and a stylized infinity sign for the Vast. A simple, large X representing the Extinction is in the center of the circle. The leftmost image has a black and white gradient in the opposite direction as the circle for a background. The right image has a solid white background.]
I always think it helps to imagine them like colours. The edges bleed together, and you can talk about little differences: “oh, that’s indigo, that’s more lilac”, but they’re both purple. - Gerry, The Magnus Archives episode 111
Here’s a little fear color wheel to show my love of The Magnus Archives. Couldn’t decide which version I liked better, so have both.

The entities based on how sexy I, a repulsed aroace, find them
Eye: being perceived is gross but being known and anticipated is dope so points for that 6/10
Buried: hrrrg.... pressure stim....... we are stuck together in a closet with little room to navigate and thus cuddles are required.. there was only one bed..... never let me go..... 10/10
Corruption: it’s literally sickness wtf gross 0/10
Stranger: ???? I guess if you’re into one night stands? 2/10
Web: as my dear friend said, your views on the web determine if you’re a top bottom or switch... I am but a simple bottom with parentification issues and love web Martin with all my heart. Take the wheel bitch I’m trusting you. Also many eyes is good 15/10
Desolation: arson is hot and so is the idea of jumping headfirst into a relationship when both of you know it won’t last more than maybe a month bc right now you need each other. 9/10
Flesh: bad. Gross. I’m made of meat. YOURE made of meat. This is the worst thing I’ve ever heard disgusting stop it release me from this flesh prison I’m gonna barf. One of my limbs feel heavy reminding me it is in fact meat and I immediately want to chop it off. -100000000000000/10
Slaughter: is blood sexy? Killing people together? I suppose it is a very active activity that will make you hot and sleepy after? Idk I am but a simple ace. 4/10???
Hunt: rivals to lovers. Swords to throats I am chasing you down and conveniently giving you a moment to escape and slip away. Oh what’s this??? You left a clue for me to keep trying to find you? 🤭 hmmmm 8/10
Lonely: I mean you’re literally alone. Who could you be sexy with???? I guess you get that mysterious loner vibe bc of the fog. You ride a motorcycle and leather jacket and are always alone or you’re a sailor both of which are inherently a little sexy. 5/10 in part bc I’m ace and you can’t have sex if there’s no one there
Vast: one night stand thing again but also consider: everything is temporary and nothing matters so we might as well have each other. 7/10
End: ever read Shakespeare? If you’re in love with someone you have to die tragically in their arms and be willing to start wars for them it’s a FACT. 7/10
Spiral: feelings are confusing enough without adding the literal definition of madness in but also: distortion gives off fae vibes and they only want to have fun. You get drunk and have a crazy night on the town you can only half remember 8/10
Dark: oh thank goodness we can’t see that we both have bodies. Suspense and anticipation are good I guess maybe? Gets points for that I guess 3/10

[ID: A circle divided into fourteen equal parts.  Starting from just right of the top and going clockwise, these are labelled: Beholding, Lonely, Vast, Dark, End, Spiral, Desolation, Stranger, Corruption, Buried, Flesh, Slaughter, Hunt, and Web.  An arrow points between Desolation and Spiral at the bottom of the image, labelled “Exctinction?” End ID]
So between Old Passage and Family Business, I've been obsessed with trying to figure out the balance of the Powers, and how the passages Smirke built might have been arranged.  After a lot of thought, this version of the arrangement is what I've settled on. Thanks to @statementends for posting their version of this last week and motivating me to post mine.  Thoughts under the cut.
First, some assumptions: as part of balancing the powers, those most opposite each other ideologically are opposite each other on the circle.  Similarly, those adjacent to each other are generally close allies, and if a power were to complete a ritual, the adjacent powers are those that could “come through” with it.  Any power not adjacent would be willing to disrupt another's ritual, since it wouldn't help them any.
Things we know “for sure,” or that I can at least quote from the show:
*Stranger and Beholding are directly opposed.  I can't remember the episode number, but I know the word “antithetical” has been used to describe their relationship.
*Vast and Buried are opposed.  This is given as the example of opposed powers in 111.
*Lonely and Web are allied with Beholding.  The Lukases are patrons of the Magnus Institute, and even ignoring Jon and Martin's personal spider-y affiliations, the Web has been helping out a lot in the Archives.
*Lonely and Dark are allied with the Vast.  Given that the Daedalus station is a joint project of the Lukases, Fairchilds, and a company based out of Ny-Alesund (which we know is a place of power for the Dark) this seems extremely likely.
Things I'm making some assumptions about:
*The Hunt is opposed to the Spiral. Based on 133, several of the Hunt's avatars who are involved in the Everchase were hunting for places that do not exist, including Sannikov Land, which we know was the location of the Spiral's ritual. It makes sense that those obsessed with finding would be diametrically opposed to those who cannot be found.
*Desolation is allied with the Stranger.   Gertrude comments in MAG 87 that it makes sense the Jude Perry would work with the Stranger after the Desolation's ritual failed.  It wouldn't make sense if the Desolation couldn't squeeze into a world affected by the Unknowing.
*Desolation is opposed to the Web. Based on the various statements from Hilltop Road, as well as the apparent destruction of spiders as part of the Desolation's ritual, from MAG 67
*The Spiral is not allied to either Beholding or the Stranger.  Based on various comments by Michael, who mentions that he doesn't want either power to win.
*Flesh and Buried are allied.  This isn't based on anything directly stated in the show so far, but their rituals are eerily similar (endless pits and throwing things into them)
These assumptions lead to a few more oppositions just based on what spaces in the circle are left.
*The Corruption is opposed to the Lonely.  Looking at MAG 102 and 32, those that embrace the Corruption, particularly the insect portion, have a strong bond, sometimes even familial, with their charges, so this makes some sense.
*The Slaughter is opposed to the End. This sounds off at first, because  both deal in death, but the methods of causing/generating fear are so vastly difference that there has to be a clash.  In a war, The Slaughter is feeding off the fear of bullets and bayonets whizzing around you, while the End is feeding from the fever in the trenches.
*The Flesh is opposed to the Dark. This is the one I'm least happy with, as we don't have any solid evidence of this, but the powers allied to each (End and Vast for the Dark, Buried and Slaughter for the Flesh) fit well enough for me.
Before 134, my pet theory was that the new power was going to be allied to Beholding (possibly as a technology based fear) and that was why the Web and Lonely have been jockeying for position in the Archives so hard - if the new power rose before the Watcher’s Crown went off, Beholding would pull through the new power and only one of the other two - by manipulating Beholding, the Web and Lonely were trying to set themselves up to benefit from the Eye succeeding.
Now that theory is admittedly pretty much shot, so I’ve gotta put the Extinction somewhere.  I’ve seen a decent amount of discussion about Desolation being the most likely ally to Extinction, as both deal in destruction more than death.  Of the options on my wheel, I preferred the Spiral as its second ally, both flavor-wise (climate change deniers, flat-earthers, and Fake News in general sort of straddle the line of Extinction and Distortion) and narratively, because imagine if Helen suddenly turned her back on the Archives because kind of likes this new power, actually.  I will say that I also like the theory of Extinction as a circle in the center of the wheel, part of all and none, and without a clear opposition.

Smirke’s 14 Broadsides:
the Buried : the Corruption : the Dark : the Desolation : the End : the Flesh : the Hunt : the Lonely : the Slaughter : the Spiral : the Stranger : the Vast : the Web : the Extinction
blue Stonehenge & Palatino for The Sick Village—
not going to lie, struggled a bit on this one! didn’t end up using any of the vertical typesetting i started with, for one thing, but that’s fine, it’s good for the ego probably. i had a more complicated idea that just wasn’t necessary, so it’s really very straightforward typesetting in the end, but the lockup was sort of a nightmare for some reason? and i will never get to know why i had to compensate 1/2 pt. in the leading of the right side to make them align properly. my math was GOOD >:(
But! i like it very much now, so worth even the time i didn’t use at my most efficient. stonehenge is SO nice to print on, im glad wedding season last year left me with a whole bunch of offcuts.
