MY FAVE 23 MOVIES AND WHY (first version):

(context: i'm really bored rn and today went by so fast so i decided to post this before i forget i ever made it.)

ORDER IS FROM LEFT TO RIGHT:

1. Drive

WHY: It's my entire personality in one movie. I can't say that about any other movie in existence, ever.

2. Apocalypse Now

WHY: The perfect deluge of fantastical storytelling elements and masterful filmmaking. It also stars Martin Sheen who is my favorite living actor. And it was also shot in the Philippines which gives it plus points in my perspective.

3. The Passion of Joan of Arc

WHY: The true face of melancholia.

4. The Neon Demon

WHY: A modern fairytale in supreme neon Hollywood starring fellow Aries, Elle Fanning. What's not to like?

5. Rebel Without A Cause

WHY: Because James Dean is so cool, and I want to be like him so much.

6. Kung Fu Hustle

WHY: A literal perfect movie. I will forever defend Stephen Chow as one of the greatest auteurs of all time. Consider that he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in this behemoth of a movie. Also, this is my favorite superhero movie ever. If you know, you know.

7. Tokyo Drifter

WHY: Every minimalist's wet dream manifested into a yakuza B-movie.

8. East of Eden

WHY: More James Dean crying how I would cry in real life, perfect.

9. Badlands

WHY: Martin Sheen will always be the best, the coolest, and the most lost potential in my eyes. If he didn't do Apocalypse Now and it didn't mentally affect him as much as it did, he would probably have a legacy right now that you can compare to other seismic actors.

10. Pokemon: The First Movie

WHY: Because everybody loved this movie and everybody's probably only Pokemon movie they've seen. And Mewtwo.

11. Giant

WHY: A great American epic where you see what James Dean could have looked like if he got older.

12. One-Eyed Jacks

WHY: Magnetizing. My favorite Western.

13. The Tree of Life

WHY: To crave for a cosmic meaning to all things and receive it in such a trivial thing like film, it makes me cry every time.

14. Fallen Angels

WHY: The epitome of cool. Like sliding off Mount Everest using butter.

15. Blade Runner

WHY: Robots. Deep philosophy. An innate annoyance that all umbrellas don't have glow sticks in them. This movie is that noir movie you don't tell The Maltese Falcon or Chinatown about or they'll realize how bland and boring they are.

16. The Other Side of The Wind

WHY: The greatest Orson Welles film ever was made after he died. How tragic. How fitting.

17. The Dark Knight Rises

WHY: Such a sweet blockbuster thrill with a very underrated Bane portrayal. Also being stuck in a bottomless pit and having to crawl out of it yourself is very relatable, innit?

18. Sucker Punch

WHY: Do I really need to explain?

19. The Big Sleep

WHY: Don't judge me but I can rewatch this movie ten times in a row and never get bored. I love fast-talking, slick-talking, nowhere-going, nothing-understanding flicks.

20. Julius Caesar

WHY: I recite lines from this movie before I go to sleep at night. I shout the same lines when I wake up at the morning.

21. Barry Lyndon

WHY: I can't rewatch this without being prepared to feel existentially empty and cry endlessly. The only Kubrick film I can stomach without feeling completely hopeless about everything and anything.

22. Ghost In The Shell

WHY: Too cool for live action adaptation, man.

And there is the first version of my list. There is, more than a likely, a lot of movies I missed to include here but I'll save those for another time. It's just hard to sit down and think about things that have had an emotional affect on me.

1. What's the one thing they would save in a fire?

Cockroach the rat without question. There really aren’t many things that he keeps on him from place to place anyway, and most of his actual valuables are hidden and stashed away across the Badlands so he doesn’t have too much to lose anyway but he would absolutely make sure that Cockroach was safe before he worried about himself or anything else.

3. How would they fare in a zombie apocalypse?

He would absolutely thrive. Tbh he'd probably welcome it. He'd be the one with a group of cultish followers who do anything he asks because he's so in his element, he offers a false sense of security. It would suit him, seeing the world collapse around him and giving way for him to take more power. He's lived in a dog-eat-dog world his whole life, and has always prioritized survival and brutality so he really wouldn't see much difference besides the fact that he now has more things to kill on the daily and more people to look to him like god. He'd undoubtedly meet a bloody demise, probably at the hands of other humans. Alternatively...I'm thinking about the zombie king in Army of the Dead and I think that would be very sexy for him too...

39. What's one skill they wish they had?

Anything he really wants to know, he'll figure out. He does need brushing up on his gun skills though. He can hit a target dead center, but he's not used to the weight/the kickback/reload time/etc. He doesn't use them very often and doesn't necessarily Want to use them (prefers the proximity of blades), but he'd rather be prepared and proficient just in case.

45. What kind of movies do they like?

Horror! Of all kinds but the bloodier and gorier the better. He loves slashers and cheap, campy b-movies with over-the-top effects. He likes to laugh at the victims and criticize the killers because he knows he could (and has) done better. Anything that one might describe as torture porn is something he probably watches for a laugh. He also likes monster movies a lot, the classics you can’t find in 2077 because they don’t make them like that anymore.

But his big secret secret is that he also really likes those cheesy made-for-tv romances and holiday movies, which of course he only started watching to make fun of and that’s what he’ll tell anyone who dares question him on it (if he doesn’t outright kill them). But he’ll have them set to record and watch them when he’s sure he won’t get caught. He really can’t explain it himself but there’s something that draws him to them, a glimpse of a life that was simultaneously taken from him and one he refuses to let himself have.

Summary: Welcome to the Badlands of Montana! This will be the setting of our game. What’s the name of the game? Simple, make it out alive. In which you and Jaemin are kidnapped and forced to try and find your way out of the Badlands.

--Part Four

“What do we do if we don’t see a clear way to go?” you ask, taking heavy breaths as you place your hands on top of your head. I will never go mountain climbing after this.

“Then I say we just keep walking the way we were going, I mean there isn’t really a point in going back,” Jaemin comments, copying your posture.

You nod your head, taking one final deep breath, holding it for a few seconds, and letting it go.

The first hill you climbed had more of a flat top, making it so you could walk around the top somewhat easily. But this one isn’t as flat and you both have to lean slightly forward so as not to fall down the hill.

“Well this hill isn’t as big as the other one, so I guess we just stay here and look around. No use in trying to walk around it.”

You nod your head, trying to stand straighter to get a better look around. You sway slightly, leaning forward again to regain your balance.

“Careful,” Jaemin says, reaching his hand out to grab your elbow.

You try to straighten up again, standing up slower this time. Once you manage to straighten yourself, you shake his hand off. “You see anything?”

He sighs softly, straightening himself up.

As you both look around the surrounding landscape, you push the nervous feeling inside you away. Now isn’t the time to let your need to make people like you get in the way.

“I think there’s a building over there,” Jaemin says, excitement lacing his voice. “I’m not crazy right? That’s an actual building.”

Turning around slowly, you silently remind yourself that even if there is a building, you shouldn’t get your hopes up.

But once you’re turned in the direction he’s pointing, you feel your breath catch in your throat. “Oh my god.”

“Okay, now that we know I’m not crazy, how do we know this isn’t another joke or something? What if his whole plan is to lead us to that building and then kill us?”

“We don’t,” you whisper back.

With the reminder that there’s someone else controlling you and the last time you thought you found the way out was a lie, you feel the helplessness feeling start to creep in.

He knew we’d find that building, hell, he’s probably waiting for us there.

Blinking a few times, you nod your head. “Okay, do we still want to try?”

He doesn’t answer right away, and when you glance over at him, he’s staring at the distant building.

With another sigh, he nods his head.

“I want to apologize.”

You nod your head, not surprised at the sudden apology. Ever since you had made it back down the hill he’s been sending you nervous glances.

“Why? You’re not wrong. I married him for the plane ticket here, so technically, I did marry him for the money.”

“Um,” He pauses, bringing his hand up to rub his neck. “Still, it was wrong, and given I don’t know the full story, I had no right to say that to you. So I’m sorry.”

Nodding your head, you let silence fall between you two again. You normally didn’t let other people’s opinions affect you like this, not in front of them at least. But considering he’s the only person you have, you don’t have any other choice.

“Jaemin?”

He hums in response.

“You don’t know me, and you most certainly don’t know my life. Before you assume I did it only for the money, know I’ve basically been on my own since I was 15. It isn’t my fault Sam presented me with an opportunity.”

He nods slowly, eyes wandering. “I mean it, I am sorry. And I’m not trying to make excuses, I just think the situation is finally getting to me. I should’ve watched my words better, it isn’t your fault we’re stuck out here.”

You sigh, stuffing your hands into your back pockets. “You’re right, you should’ve watched your words better. Maybe you aren’t as cool as you thought you were.”

He chuckles, smiling at you over his shoulder. “Would it help if I told you I’m going through caffeine withdrawal?”

“What?”

“Maybe this is the universe's way of telling me four shots of espresso in each cup was a bad idea.”

“Oh my god, Jaemin.” You slap his shoulder, whatever hurt you still have is pushed aside. “Why didn’t you tell me? You should be drinking way more water than what I’ve been suggesting. We can take more breaks if you need.”

He smiles, shaking his head. “I’m okay, thank you though. I can push through it, we shouldn’t have to sacrifice anything just because I have an addiction.”

“What kind of a person drinks that much caffeine?”

“The kind of person whose taste buds seem to be dead, so in order to get the desired food high, he has to go to the extremes.”

You laugh, happy he isn’t shying away from you. “That is the weirdest description and I don’t even know how you could’ve come up with something like that.”

“It’s a talent.”

“Night.”

Groaning, you rub your eyes as you sit up slowly. “You have to stop doing that, you’re going to make me lose all sense of time.”

“Well, you’re just now waking up, and it is,” he draws out the s as he looks down at his watch. “Six in the afternoon, so I’d say that saying night instead of morning is fitting.”

You wave your hand dismissively, still trying to fully wake up. “My point remains.”

“Deal with it I guess.”

You turn to glare at him, only to be met with a playful smile. You smile back, abandoning your glare, and pushing yourself up onto your feet.

“We should get going,” you say, extending your hand to him.

He grabs your hand, pulling himself up. “No breakfast?”

“We can eat while we walk.”

Grabbing the backpack from next to Jaemin, you open it to look at the food inside. “How does that orange sound?”

“Sounds delectable.”

You reach into the bag to grab the fruit, scrunching your nose at his wording. “I’m not even fully awake yet, spare me the gross words.”

He winks at you before turning his back to you and starting off in the direction of the house. “No can do, sweetheart.”

You snort, closing the bag and slinging it over your shoulder, and run the few steps to catch up with him. “So tell me about yourself, Mr. Coffee Addict,” you say, peeling the last orange and dropping the peels as you walk.

“What would you like to know?”

You shrug your shoulders. “Anything you want, what do you like to do in your spare time?”

“Well, me and my sister are big TV watchers, so after we’re both done with school for the day, we just sit and watch TV together. I’m also a popcorn addict, so you can imagine my life right now living without my two loves.”

You snort, smiling slightly at his humor. “I think you’ll be okay.” You break the orange in half, offering him his half. “Think of this as a detox.”

He smiles softly, mumbling a thank you before shakily breaking one piece off and putting it into his mouth.

You press your lips into a thin line at the sight, feeling bad there’s nothing either of you could do to make this easier for him.

“What about you, what do you like to do?”

You look down at your orange, sighing as you break a piece off. You struggle to think of anything vaguely interesting to tell him.

You chuckle as the realization comes to you. “I just work.”

“Huh?” He creases his eyebrows, frowning softly. “You don’t have a favorite movie or something?”

You laugh at the expression, smiling softly. “Oh, I do. I don’t really watch movies, but one of my favorite TV shows is Friends. I just haven’t sat down and watched TV in a while, I’m always taking extra shifts at work, studying for some test, etcetera etcetera.”

He nods his head, squinting his eyes at you as he eats another piece. “Well, then let me cordially invite you to a movie night with me and my sister.”

“Oh I couldn’t do that, I wouldn’t be any fun,” you decline immediately.

You’ve always dreamed of having a relationship like the one Jaemin has with his sister with someone in your family or even a close friend. One where you could sit and spend time together doing nothing. You and Sam never spent much time alone, the longest being five hours when you were getting married.

But your longingness mixed with the inexperience of being around someone new would surely bring disaster, you couldn’t bring that into something so perfect.

He clicks his tongue, breaking another piece off. “Don’t be silly, you’d fit right in. If you get along with me, you’ll get along with Emma.”

“I don’t know Jaemin, you-”

“One thing you’ll come to learn about me, y/n, I’m always right. The sooner you accept that, the better.”

You look away from the path in front of you, surprised at the sincerity in his voice. “Jaemin, really, as stupid as it sounds I wouldn’t know how to act. I’d probably make your sister uncomfortable, girls aren’t really my strong suit.” “Oh, and guys are?”

You scoff at the teasing tone, looking back over to glare at him. When he meets your eye, a playful smirk plastered on his face, he simply winks.

“Oh shut up,” you say, rolling your eyes. “I don’t know, talking to guys has always been somewhat easy to me. Maybe it’s because I grew up with two brothers, but girls have just never made sense to me.”

He nods his head, playful smile still present. “Well, then we can consider this training, you can’t live in fear of half the population for the rest of your life.”

“I’m not scared,” you defend, eating your last piece of orange.

“The whole reason you’re not accepting my invitation is that you’re scared of my sister.”

“Who said you’re not the one scared of? Someone who drinks four shots of espresso per drink is not to be trusted.”

He clicks his tongue. “Well I think people with that much snake knowledge shouldn’t be trusted, what do you have to say about that huh?”

You smile at his response, his teasing tone replaced with an offended one. “I say that because of our situation, I’m kind of glad I obtained this information. At least I’m not the one in pain.”

“Touché, my dude, touché.”

“Y/n,” he says, grabbing your arm to make you stop. “Is that a bag up there?”

Following the direction of his finger, you find a neon yellow backpack on the side of one of the hills a few feet in front of you.

“I guess so.” You start walking again, sighing as you see you’d have to climb up a little of the hill in order to reach it. “Did we find the other one this fast? I feel like we just got the other one.”

“I don’t honestly remember.”

Neither did you, if you were being honest, and the idea that time was beginning to blur together made you uncomfortable.

“Rock paper scissors on who has to climb to get it?” you ask as you both approach the base of the hill.

“I can do it,” he offers, pulling off his hoodie and handing it to you. “It isn’t that far up.”

“Oh, thank you.”

He smiles, turning away from you and pulling himself up the hill.

It only takes him a few pulls before he reaches where the backpack is wedged between two rocks.

He pulls out the bag and lightly tosses it your way, warning you beforehand with a “catch.”

“Jaemin, no!” you exclaim, dropping his sweater in surprise.

He laughs as he starts climbing his way down, looking over his shoulder at you. “You caught it, what’s the big deal?”

“The big deal is that I’m not a fan of people throwing stuff at me.”

He laughs again, pushing slightly off the hill and letting himself fall the rest of the way down. “You’re fine, you big baby.”

You huff, opening the bag and looking at the contents inside. Frowning, you reach into the bag to pull out an unfamiliar object.

“What’s that?” Jaemin asks as he walks over and picks up his sweatshirt.

“I think it’s a walkie talkie.”

As soon as the words leave your mouth, the device comes to life. “Numbers 24 and 25.”

Soft Alphabet - Dean-Charles Chapman

a/n: finally got around to writing one for dean :) enjoy!

A - Affection (how do they show affection)

dean shows his affection towards you with his words and gestures. he is always telling you he loves you and things like that, but he will also do small things that show he does. whether that’s getting you flowers, making you breakfast in bed, or getting you either inexpensive or expensive gifts. you beg him not to spend so much money on you, but he doesn’t care. if he sees something that he thinks you’ll like, he gets it because he knows it’ll make you happy.

B - Balance (how do they balance you, work/school/life?)

he tries to include you in his life as much as he can. with his hectic filming schedule, it gets tough being in his life, but when he has the time, he is with you. he sometimes invites you over with his family, just so he can spend time with both his sisters and you, knocking out two birds with one stone. he hates that he can’t be with you as much as he wants, even when you move in together, but you understand.

C - Cuddles (do they enjoy cuddling? what positions?)

dean is all for cuddles 24/7. he loves you sitting with your back against his chest and his arms around your waist. it’s the perfect position to lean down and give you neck and cheek kisses. he loves feeling you so close to him, with your head against his shoulder. he also loves when you cuddle up next to him because he can lean down and kiss you easily.

D - Date (what was your first date?)

your first date is to a fancy-ish restaurant, since dean wants to treat you nice. he encourages you to order whatever you want, even if it’s pricey. you can’t believe that he’s serious, but you order what you want. dean assures you that it’s fine, that you deserve a good time and he wants you to be happy. afterwards, you two take a walk in the park nearby, chatting even more. at the end of the date, he gives you a sweet kiss and promises to call you to set up another date.

E - Excited (how excited do they get when they see you/are with you?)

he always has a huge smile on his face when he sees you. you know that smile, where his eyes crinkle and he shows all of his teeth. he pulls you into a hug and can’t help but sway side to side happily, rubbing your back with his hands. when he pulls away, he grabs your cheeks and kisses you deeply, whispering how he’s happy to see you.

F - Fighting (what happens when you fight)

fights usually break out when you’re stressed. you haven a bad habit of picking on things that don’t matter. if you come home from a stressful day of school or work, anything can set you off. dean is a little messy, so when you come home to find dishes all over and clothes strewn your room, you blow up and go off on dean. and he can’t help but fight back, not seeing why you were yelling at him.

G - Gorgeous (pet names. what do they like to call you? what do they like to be called?)

he has so much. love, sweetheart, darling, my love, baby, babe. any cheesy name you can think of, he loves to call you by. he also has a fun nickname that he made up that he uses sometimes. you call him by nicknames as well, like DC, deano, deanie (he doesn’t like those so you usually use them when you’re teasing and messing with him).

H - Hi (first time meeting)

the first time you met was during filming for into the badlands. you were an extra on set and he ran into you. he wasn’t sure who you were, so you two chatted while there was a break in filming. he was so smitten with you and asked for your number when the cast was called back to set. after that, you two met up a lot more, which started a perfect relationship.

I - Insecure (what they do when you’re feeling insecure/vice versa)

dean gets insecure way too much for your liking. he sometimes sees hateful messages and comments from people online and it gets to him, so when that happens, you force him to turn his phone off and spend time with you. you watch movies, do a puzzle, just take his mind off things. after he’s better, he thanks you and rewards you with so many kisses and cuddles, smiling widely as he realizes how lucky he is.

J - Jealousy (do they get jealous? how do they react to you being jealous)

he is super jealous when you first meet george. you two seem to hit it off really well, and you two talk for an hour or so while george has a break. dean is of course happy that you’re getting along with his close friend and co-star, but he can’t help but feel a bit jealous, seeing you laugh and smile with george like you do with him. and you notice his saddened mood, so you reassure him that you love him and only him, george is just a new friend, and you could never see yourself being with anyone else but dean.

K - Kisses (where do they like to kiss you/how often?)

he is almost addicted to your lips. he kisses you in the morning when you wake up, when you two leave each other for the day, when you see each other again, and before you go to bed. kisses on your lips are his favorite, but when either of you are sick, he’ll settle for forehead and cheek kisses.

L - Love (when was the first time they said i love you or realized it?)

dean says it about four months into your relationship. he’s never felt something like this before, so he knows right away that he feels strongly for you and that you are very special. he takes you out for a fancy dinner and gives you a beautiful necklace, then once you arrive home with your dessert, he says it. as he begins saying it, you shove a forkful of chocolate cake into your mouth and pause when he says it, taken aback. he can’t help but laugh and smile widely, only proving his love for you in that moment.

M- Moving in (when do you decide to move in together)

you two decide to move in together about a year and a half after you start dating. dean was busy with filming and being away at the start of your relationship, so he knew it would be a while before things settled down, with the press tours and screenings. so finally, when everything is over and settled, he asks you to move into an apartment with him in london. and you agree right away. that night, you two spend hours looking through listings and trying to find a perfect place.

N - Newborn (their reaction to starting a family)

you both are still pretty young, so starting a family is out of the cards for now. but years later, after you’re married, you talk about having kids. and dean is all for it, ready to start a family with the most beautiful girl that he loves so much. the thing is, you don’t even have to try getting pregnant, because unbeknownst to you, you were already pregnant during the time of that talk. dean is so so happy. during the entire pregnancy, his hands never leave your bump, and he loves kissing it over and over when you’re chilling in bed.

O - Open (how open you are with one another)

dean is a very easy person to be open with. he doesn’t judge, he doesn’t put you down, so whenever you need to talk, he’s there for you, actually listening. he offers ways to help if there’s a problem, or if you just need to vent, he’s there, mad with you. he’s also very open with you, telling you if something is bothering him or if he needs to get some stuff off his mind.

P - Photos (what kind of photos you take of them/they take of you)

he has photos of basically every moment between the two of you. from holidays, to movie nights that you two have occasionally, and photos of each other sleeping. he just loves you so much, he never wants a moment to go unnoticed. he loves them for when he goes away and you can’t come along, he’ll lay in bed at night after a long day of filming, scrolling through photos of you to cheer him up. and, there’s even a few naughty photos for...other reasons *wink wink*.

Q - Quiet (what they do when you’re unusually quiet/vice versa)

he can always tell when you’re unusually quiet. in the beginning, he tries to get you to tell him what’s wrong, but when he realizes that you need some time, he allows it and gives you cuddles. he’ll fill the silence with stories of his, or just words of encouragement to try and get you to feel better. he hates not hearing your voice so he’s willing to do anything he can to try and get you to talk.

R - Recovery (how they/you help them after an injury)

he is by your side the entire time you are recovering from whatever. whether it’s a surgery, a broken bone, or even a sickness, he wants to make sure you have whatever you need, whenever you want it. when he’s injured, he’s like a baby. begging for kisses and cuddles and refusing to let you help him.

S - Solution (how they resolve fights)

solving fights with dean is easy. both of you take some time apart from one another to cool down and sort your thoughts out before you get together and talk things over in a rational and calm way. you express your own thoughts and dean does whatever he can to assure you that he’ll change what needs to be changed, and vice versa. both of you apologize, even if it’s not your fault, because you can’t stay mad at him for long.

T- Touch (when they need/want your touch, what will they do? how often?)

he needs your touch after a long day of filming. especially if it’s a tough film. so you go to france with him while he films 1917, and after every single day, he comes back to the hotel, falling into your arms, after showering, of course. he begs you to play with his hair and hold his hand as he talks about his day, or asks you about yours.

U - Up ( waking up with them)

since he’s a cuddler, if you need to be up before him, getting out of his grip is tough. he never wants to let you go, so you have to basically pry his arms away from you and replace the space with your pillow, which smells like you. dean is always grumpy when he has to get up, wanting to stay in bed with you all day. as you wake up, he’ll give you soft kisses all over your face, even your eyelashes, oddly enough. he just loves the way the sun shines on your face, making you look even more beautiful.

V - Vacation (where they travel with you)

since dean is always traveling because of filming, he takes you with him when you are able to get off work and school. he never wants to be away from you for long periods of time, so he tries to bring you along if he knows he’s going to be gone for months on end. when he has a break between projects, he’ll take you to wherever in the world that you want to go. he knows that being away from you is tough, and he hates it, so he makes it up with vacations.

W - Wedding (how they propose/where you get married/honeymoon)

dean proposes in a really sweet and sentimental way. he sets up this cozy setting in the backyard of his home, equipped with tons of blankets, pillows, and snacks. he also set up a large inflatable movie screen to watch your favorite movies. but after the first one, he stops it and plays a video he made. it’s a slideshow of a bunch of photos and videos over the course of your relationship. from videos of you singing in the car, to pictures of you asleep on his chest, and you spending time with his sisters. after the video is over, he pops the question with a beautiful ring, and you of course say yes. and since dean is a family man, you get married right on his family’s farm, having a little ceremony and reception with a few close friends and family.

X - X-factor (what about you captivated them?)

you connecting and being so nice towards his family. the way you immediately bonded with his sisters and mother had him from the get-go. he knew that if his family loved you, you were perfect. the first time you met his family, he watched in awe and adoration as you chatted with dolly, smiles on both of your faces. he knew from that moment that you were the one.

Y - Yawning (how they act when they’re tired)

his mood can differ when he’s tired. if it’s after a long day of filming, he’s usually not in a good mood, knowing that he has to get up early tomorrow to film again. he can be grumpy during those times, groaning and complaining about how tired he is and how he doesn’t want to go to work tomorrow; this usually means he doesn’t want to be bothered, meaning no cuddles. but if he’s tired in general, when he’s on a break from filming, he’s very cuddly and clingy, whispering into your neck and clinging to you like a koala.

Z - Zzzz (how you fall asleep together)

dean always kisses your lips before falling asleep. if he doesn’t, he gets very upset. it becomes a routine, even if you go to bed mad at one another, you always kiss before dozing off; when he’s away, he always blows you a kiss through the phone screen when you facetime. he holds you close to him, nuzzling his nose into your hair and breathing your scent in, calming him.

FEATURE: Wanna Feel Old? Here's 10 Anime That Turned 10 This Year!

Time flies when you're having fun, and in what seems like the blink of an eye a decade can come and go before you know it. At the time of this writing, the year 2010 was ten years ago. It was a great year for anime in many respects, but with the blazing speed with which new seasonal anime offerings pass through fandom's public consciousness, it can be difficult to realize that some of our favorite modern anime may now be considered “vintage” or “retro” by the younger fans.

Presented in alphabetical order, here's a short list of ten anime from the far-flung, formerly future year of 2010, compiled and curated with the express purpose of making you feel old.

Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail

Aw, geez. It's really been a decade since we last got an animated version of the adventures of Rock, Revy, Dutch, Benny, and the rest of the criminals and crazies that populate the gritty city of Roanapur? Is Rei Hiroe ever going to finish the original manga? Is it still on hiatus? This set of OAVs was super dark, even by Black Lagoon standards. Maybe it's best to leave things well enough alone ...

Durarara

My interest in this show dropped off when it began focusing more on the rivalries between Dollars and other gang organizations rather than the scythe-wielding, motorcycle-riding dullahan and the bouncer guy who's so angry that he can lob vending machines at people. But to realize Durarara is a decade old (and by extension, Baccano! is even older) makes me feel like that dude who withers up when he sips from the wrong Grail in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.

Occult Academy

A cool, original anime full of ghosts, psychics, aliens, time travel, and a protagonist with a sneering distaste for all of the paranormal nonsense she has to deal with on a daily basis, Occult Academy is now in the double-digits category in terms of age. It's a fun and smart little show, but realizing it's been around for a decade makes my bones ache.

Oreimo

A light novel adaptation with a rather specific interpretation of the phrase “keeping it in the family,” I never watched Oreimo, but I remember it being both extremely popular and extremely controversial when it was initially being streamed and broadcast. To think the flame wars this show ignited on internet message boards have now been burning for a decade or more ...

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

In the time since Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt premiered, most of the creative talent that put Gainax on the map has moved on to form their own studios (TRIGGER, Khara, etc.) and left that once-proud company as a shell of its former self, or two shells if you count Gaina (formerly Fukushima Gainax). After ten years, there's likely no longer any hope for a sequel, but I still love the rude, crude, and lewd adventures of this pair of fallen angels. I even love the notoriously trollish ending.

Princess Jellyfish

I love Princess Jellyfish to death, but the thought of the Sisterhood trapped in a full decade of awkwardness and isolation thanks to their poor social skills and weird hobbies is a terrifying one indeed. Will any of them ever get a real job? Will Tsukimi find happiness despite her romantic struggles? I really ought to finish the manga to find out ...

The Secret World of Arrietty

Wait a minute, I saw this in the theater during its first international run. That was back when Disney was still releasing Studio Ghibli's catalog, not GKIDS. Do movie theaters even exist any more? How many more films have they released since then? Does anyone remember The Secret World of Arrietty as a perfectly decent, non-Miyazaki, non-Takata Ghibli film?

The Tatami Galaxy

Unlike some other entries in this list, The Tatami Galaxy has managed several spin-offs and sequels in the ten years since Tomihiko Morimi's novel was adapted into an anime by Masaaki Yuasa and MADHOUSE. A show that can be enjoyed on its own or as a complement to The Night is Short, Walk on Girl — The Tatami Galaxy is still great fun, even if you have to imagine that after a decade or more, the main character and the Raven-Haired Girl have probably each long-since graduated from college and may well be on their second or third divorce.

Yamada's First Time: B Gata H Kei

After a decade of effort, I wonder how well Yamada is doing in her quest to seduce 100 handsome members of the opposite sex? Judging by her level of success in the 2010 TV anime, she's probably still working on the first vertical line in that particular tally.

And there you have it, a nowhere near exhaustive list of 10-year-old anime to make you feel old. 2010 was a big year, and other honorable mentions include titles like Gintama: The Movie, Sound of the Sky, and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, all of which are now old-school, whether we want them to be or not.

I have a question about the SSCU page! What would you say are the genres of each film/series? And what would you compare them to?

ooh yay another fun question thank you anon! the sscu page can be found here also and it’s basically a breakdown of what the films/tv shows/etc. would be like if i was in charge of the mcu . god bless anyway without further ado!

the avengers: canon so it’s basically the same BUT i think a little more tender...a little move loving...it’s a movie about an evil demigod and his army of robot aliens...but it’s also about friendship <3

the long haul: this is just a 10 minute oneshot set in a bar but it’s about audrey and steve getting to know each other! it’s also very tender and just family-oriented and i want to say it’s almost like the scene in schitt’s creek where the whole family is laughing and dancing together

lady liberty: legacy: this starts off as a heist movie but it eventually morphs into a real Spy movie. it’s got action, conspiracies, kidnapping, etc. very fun and cool

the tower (season 1/season 2): this limited series is filmed like a sitcom. there are talking heads, it’s very parks and rec meets veep but there’s also like the chaotic energy of new girl.....tony is schmidt audrey is nick idk anything else but i know THAT is true

black widow: opus: this is kind of dark? it’s like killing eve but less graphic in its violence; there’s a psychological horror element to it as well. i’m gonna call it killing eve meets black swan meets atomic blonde meets something to water it down and make it a pg-13 rating

thor: the dark world: it’s basically the same but the b plot now also features audrey reckoning with the fact that darcy is dating her dad so there’s awkwardness there. i think i’d like to write it so it’s a bit more funny and emblematic of taika’s direction? so kind of like the witcher?

agent 13: this is another oneshot that’s about 10 minutes long and is about audrey and sharon meeting to exchange information on the winter soldier. i’m gonna go ahead and say it’s got spy energies, it’s serious, and tonally it’s very similar to tws

captain america: tws: conspiracy theory, pretty much the same, though there’s a more tender element to it because of the familial connections and the fact that i’m really into making all the avengers be friends with each other lmfao

hawkeye(s): this is like burn notice and veronica mars. there’s an la noir element but also a comedic aspect to it; clint takes himself too seriously but also not seriously at all, they’re always at the beach, etc.

the falcon: this show has very neo-noir vibes to it. i think it has moments of extraordinary gentleness but also some violence, probably tv-14 but pushing it, kind of a mob story rom-com

avengers: age of ultron: there’s like a frankenstein something here but this time the creature is the monster. generally i think it’s similar to how it was in the movie but there’s something a lot more horrifying about ultron in the way i want to write him. i really want to emphasize how dangerous he is and have him be extraordinarily malicious and inhumane and cruel

quicksilver and the scarlet witch: very lighthearted !! i see this being like arrested development meets community in terms of comedy. it’s chaotic and has the same murphy’s law type thing as arrested development, but the characters aren’t quite so horrible.

thorn: this corresponds to phantasmagoria/juliette fury’s fic and is technically set early 2014 but it’s released on netflix the february before ca:cw. it’s quantico but also got like . weird halsey badlands energy? from dusk til dawn without the vampires. supernatural without the ghosts or the sexism. it’s a tv-ma road trip series about the things human beings invent when we are scared and want to be saved

captain america: civil war: basically the same but with more anguish lol

lady liberty and the angels of mercy: this is definitely birds of prey. 100%

thor: ragnarok: the same; this movie was perfect. chef’s kiss i love u taika

avengers: infinity war: okay also kind of the same but hopefully emphasizing the apocalyptic nature of it all a bit more just so it’s even more miserable to watch

the real hawkeye: THIS is old-fashioned noir. it’s shot in black and white and created by rob thomas. everyone smokes with cigarette holders and talks in mid-atlantic acents. they lean in

lady liberty: resurrection: this has the tone of those rescue mission movies? think castaway, that one where the lady from gossip girl is on the island with the shark, that kind of thing. it’s a lot of pressure but ultimately hopeful

avengers endgame: the same, but less stupid and more closure
