hi there, i'm trying to get into the coding community so to speak. what sites can i join to discuss/do coding related stuff? I know about stack overflow, github and leetcode but i'm sure there are more, do you have any advice on which spaces are worth joining? thanks!
Communities To Join For Coding/Programming
Yeah I can help! In terms of "which spaces are worth joining" would depend on you. What I see as a place worth joining is a place where I can teach others - I like giving knowledge back on what I learnt so some places that I listed don't work well for me to do that and some others I prefer the most like the discord servers I'll mention. So, you'll have to skim through these and see if they're something you like!
Anyhoo, here are some places I found:
Reddit: There are many subreddits dedicated to coding, such as r/learnprogramming, r/coding, and r/programming. You can also find subreddits dedicated to specific programming languages or technologies so you can get specific help or provide the help to those languages etc.
Codecademy Forum: They have a forum and a discord server where you can talk about the courses and get buddies to do projects together who are at the same level as you!
FreeCodeCamp Forum: This website offers free coding lessons and projects, and also has a community forum where you can ask for help and connect with other learners. I met 2 developers from there who helped me a lot.
Dev.to and Medium: Both a community where developers come to share their knowledge and experiences through blog posts and discussions. Developers sometimes gain good writing experience by writing these posts (great way to move towards being a technical writer). I've made a Dev.to account and I'm slowly adding my programming posts from here to there and I want to start using Medium too 🤔
Discord: There are many Discord servers dedicated to coding, where you can join discussions and get help with coding problems. I made a whole post with a list of discord servers I'm part of and would recommend it if you want to get into it! I made lots of developer friends from the discord servers. Intimidating at first but slowing you'll like it I think! I'm mostly there to help people with HTML and CSS problems and you can help people the same with whatever. you're strong in!
In the end, the websites and communities you choose to join will depend on your interests and goals. I recommend exploring a few different options and finding the ones that work best for you - I did that and I preferred the discord servers over the subreddits 😅

i think im gonna get back into freecodecamp! i havent relly had a lot of time to work on it recently because of school and stuff, but I'll try harder to make time haha.
that being said I don't think a step by step breakdown of each session i do is the most engaging thing to post. codeblr- do you guys have any thoughts about what you would want to read? just general observations about cs? keep with the freecodecamp stuff? other? please let me know.

Day 2/100
FreeCodeCamp
Today I only worked on the freecodecamp web design course. I’m getting through these lessons quickly, but I don’t want to zoom through each course section and just forget everything I learned so I want to pace myself. I’m also returning to college next week from spring break so I hope I can manage posting into my schedule too.
Finished lessons 69/69 of Learn HTML by Building a Cat Photo App.
Lessons 45/91 of Learn Basic CSS by Building a Cafe Menu.
Note: I’ve noticed I tend to forget the formatting for HTML but not for CSS so that's something for me to practice.
Extra
I tried matcha green tea for the first time today and I think I'm obsessed now.
I finished my first crochet project! A little flower coaster, it’s a little wonky but I am still very proud of it!
This has been my current go to playlist for everything and I love it <3. It is very 80s (ish) inspired.

Day 8 (10-16-23)
I really enjoyed coding today! I did a lot of little bits of coding for different things. My primary focus was the Tribute Page. I had forgotten that one of the requirements for the page is a link. Since the page is paying tribute to fictional character that I made, I decided to make a second page to link to. I spent some time yesterday coming up with ideas for a story that I will theme all of my freeCodeCamp certification projects around as I learn. I will also include additional personal projects to fill out my story as needed (like the secondary page I mentioned).
The purpose of this approach is to get me invested in learning to code. It's extremely difficult for me to be consistent, especially with self-managed learning. Learning is fun but it can be frustrating. Storytelling is also fun. So are secrets. I'm hoping that by slowly developing and revealing a secret story bit by bit in my projects, I can get myself invested in them enough to offset that frustration and keep myself coming back. As a bonus, having a central theme eliminates the problem of figuring out a theme or premise for each project individually, which is something I have struggled with in the past.
As an aside, I have thankfully improved my sleep schedule! I will keep working on that too.

day 7/100
for the seventh day i decided to try out a course on freecodecamp called the scientific computing with python certificate. i'm already doing a beginner's programming class in uni where we're learning python but i figured it couldn't hurt to get a second perspective. you can see i've done five or so lessons so far. :)
i'll have to do more to really get an opinion on it but i think I like how the teacher explains it. there was even a thing or two he cleared up that my own teacher glossed over (... or maybe i just didn't understand it the first time haha?)
i've used freecodecamp before but not since the pandemic started. it was with the old responsive web design certificate (i did a little with it, but my progress seems to have been erased since they replaced that certificate with a new one around a year (?) ago), so it'll be good to get back to it!
aaand with that the first week is done!

A little update
Still working on CS50 python course.
After that, I'll move to their course on AI.
In the meantime, I've been thinking about personal projects as a thing to work on. It's said to be the best way of learning and it's my cheat in regards to what to do when I'm procrastinating.
Might not always work of course but worth to try.
In regards to that, I'm looking in Godot of course. Gamedev has been my approach to learning programming and I'm trying to figure out how to help teach others in that direction as well.
I've been thinking for a while to create a volunteer teaching project for free and now that idea has gone online as well so that other can contribute in volunteer teaching.
I've found some websites like that but it feels intimidating to choose someone. Maybe it doesn't have to be a volunteer teaching but something like free code camp but for game development.
Also in the meanwhile, I found something to learn godot myself

I'm really not sure where I'm going to go with this volunteer project idea but will see and update when possible.
To summarise, I'm currently a freelance instructor teaching kids from age 6 to 18 programming stuff and I wish to further teach in this direction for older adults who wants to start but unsure of where to start or how.
I've thought of being a programming coach of sorts and have tried contacting non-profit orgs but nothing so far. Might need to start my own things but also unsure where to start and what to do. May need to develop a curriculum, etc.

Course: Data Analysis with Python - freeCodeCamp
Over the past few months, I have been searching for free courses in the field of data analysis and data science, and have discovered a multitude of online resources, among them FreeCodeCamp.
For the next few weeks, I will be posting my learnings from the Data Analysis with Python course. I decided to take inspiration from the content of @xiacodes .
I'll do my best to post something every day, but I can't promise anything for sure. Fingers crossed for me!
The course aims to provide an introduction to data analysis with Python, specifically through the exploration of key libraries such as Numpy, Pandas, Matplotlib, and Seaborn. Students will also learn how to read and save data from various sources, such as CSV files and SQL, while utilizing Jupyter Notebook as the development environment.
Five hands-on projects are included at the end of the course:

Medical Data Visualizer
Page View Time Series Visualizer
Sea Level Predictor

Spook's Coding Diary Entry 2
In my last entry post I talked about trying Codecademy.com and wanted to try freecodecamp.org instead. well, for the past couple days I have been doing just that. Here are my thoughts so far.
Pros:
Freecodecamp is completely free. It runs on donations, and you are encouraged to donate if you can, but if you can't you're not expected to and there are no consequences to not donating. You get all the features either way.
They offer free certifications. From what I understand, certifications are useless and unnecessary when it comes to getting a job. But if you want or need one for whatever reason, you can get them here for free at the end of the courses.
They offer free interview prep and career prep including projects, interview questions, etc.
Its self paced and goes one step at a time. Each little piece of the lesson is one step and it saves each one so if you want to leave and come back you can just click the last step highlighted and pick up where you left off.
They offer a larger selection of lessons and more projects than you can get from codecademy for free.
Cons:
The lessons are explained a little bit less. You have to go out of your way to look up why you need to do things sometimes and what the purpose of different steps are. The lessons also don't include a "frequently asked q&a" at the bottom like codecadmy. This can also be see as a pro though as it challenges you a little bit more and forces you to be a little more independent in your learning.
I might update this list as I use the site more. This is just my first impression but so far I do like freecodecamp and I believe it is a good option if you need a very structured lesson plan and can't afford to purchase or subscribe to anything :)

The FreeCodeCamp Study Challenge!
I literally just completed this challenge and I thought why not share the challenge on here for other people to take part in if they wanted to!
FreeCodeCamp is an open-source platform that offers various coding courses and certifications for web developers. The goal of this challenge is to choose one of the available courses on the FreeCodeCamp platform, complete the course, and earn the certificate at the end.
The challenge is self-paced, so the duration is entirely up to you. The challenge is there to motivate people into coding and/or continue their coding studies! Especially people in the Codeblr community!
FreeCodeCamp [LINK] offers the following courses:

JavaScript Algorithms and Data Structures Certification (I am going to do this one next)
Front End Libraries Certification
Data Visualization Certification

Each course is broken down into multiple sections, and completing all the sections in a course will earn you a certification for that course.
To start the FreeCodeCamp Challenge, follow the steps below:
Choose a course on the FreeCodeCamp platform that you would like to complete.
Complete the course and earn the certificate.
Post about your progress every day that you study using the #freecodecampchallenge hashtag. You can post about what you have done towards the challenge, what you have learned, and any challenges you faced and how you overcame them.
The FreeCodeCamp Challenge is an excellent opportunity to improve your coding skills and earn a valuable certification!!!! Even add that to your resume/CV! I completed this challenge and you can see me posting about it - LINK.

day 1
Not entirely sure why I'm calling this day 1, considering the fact that is by no means my first day of coding, but it's my first day of updating the blog about what I'm upto re: compsci, so I guess I'll take it.
Unsure whether I mentioned this in my intro post or not, but I'm currently making my way through FreeCodeCamp's courses. I'm still on the first one ("Responsive Web Design"), which is basically just HTML and CSS for beginners. I've done three of their practice-project things for that course so far, and today I did steps 1-11 of "Learn HTML Forms by Building a Registration Form," which is exactly what it sounds like. I'm trying to do at least 10 steps a day so I can stay consistent, and I'm really excited about this project, because after this I can do my first certification project.
I think the level of scaffolding that the Registration Form project provides is significantly less than previous projects, but I think that's good because it's allowed me to develop confidence in the knowledge that I've acquired throughout the past few weeks.

Day 4/100
Okokok so I had a bit of personal stuff to handle that took longer than I would have liked it to, but it has been taken care of and hopefully, I will be back to posting consistently. I also have my finals next week so I’ll be studying this weekend and next week mostly! I’m still planning to post about my class studies as I mentioned in my last post before this semester is over. I’m glad to be back and ready to get to coding! NOW TIME TO GET BACK TO BUSINESS >:)
FreeCodeCamp
FreeCodeCamp was easy to get back into, I didn’t have any trouble resuming where I left off. I’m happy that I’m retaining information instead of it going in one ear and out the other! If that’s one problem I have it’s not practicing so I end up forgetting what I have learned! I’m hoping to pick up the pace and do lessons every other day.
Finished Lessons 91/91 of Learn Basic CSS by Building a Cafe Menu.
Started Lessons 3/94 of CSS Colored Markers.
Extra
I made a Banana Rum cake with Brown Butter Frosting!! 10/10 It was one of my best yet I’m so proud!
My professor said that computer science students might have to go to grad school because of all the ai stuff. I'm very worried about it and plan to do LOTS of research to confirm if it’s true.

Day 4 (10-11-23)
Today I wasn't sure I wanted to code. More accurately, I had a great idea for a dinner I could make with pantry stuff and frozen leftovers and wanted to do that instead. I decided I would code for 10 or 15 minutes, then make dinner. It has been about an hour.
I started back on the accessibility lesson, and so much of what I was learning seemed applicable to the color palette page I started on yesterday. I started writing down more and more properties and tags to remember, until eventually I just had to make some adjustments to the page.
It took a little time, but overall I feel that the structure of the page makes much more sense and I am happy with that. I will finish the accessibility lesson later but I won't force myself to focus in a purely linear fashion. I think allowing myself to fixate on my side project will help me feel enthusiastic about coding in general. I figure if I can feel the same way about coding as I feel about Stardew Valley, cooking, and paleontology, then I'll end up absorbing every bit of information I can find and actually retain it. Working with my brain instead of against it seems like a good idea.
The pantry-freezer dinner, if anyone was wondering, will be carnitas taquitos with a creamy dipping sauce, mexican rice cooked in bone broth made from scraps, and iced tea :)
