If you’re waiting for the next chapter...

... of The Hen in the Foxhouse, don’t worry! The fic isn’t abandoned. We’re coming up on a bit of the story that was already written but bothered me for reasons I couldn’t put my finger on, until a few weeks ago when I had a sudden revelation of what the whole fic needed. That led to a rewrite of a couple of upcoming chapters, which led to a rewrite of a few more down the line to fit the changes, and so on and so on. The end is in sight and it’s going to be so much better with the rewrites, so stay tuned! I expect Jessie’s shenanigans will continue in a week or two.

Album Review: Rhiannon Giddens - You’re the One

“Way Over Yonder” is a fiddle tune with handclaps and harmonies, but it ain’t no spiritual. The penultimate track on Rhiannon Giddens’ You’re the One is instead about an illicit bar where the women are nice and the men are pretty.

That Giddens isn’t singing about the hereafter, but the here and now, on such a song isn’t the only surprise on You’re the One. The singer, multi-instrumentalist, former Carolina Chocolate Drop, opera composer and singer, author, MacArthur Genius and Pulitzer Prize winner’s fifth solo album is also her first of all-original material. Better still, it’s nearly on par with 2017’s Freedom Highway, Giddens’ high-water mark to date.

This is despite the LP’s lack of musical or lyrical cohesion as Giddens dumps her philandering man on the soulful “Too Little, Too Late, Too Bad” and the country-tinged “If You Don’t Know How Sweet it Is;” embraces her man on the playfully ribald “You Put the Sugar in My Bowl;” and rejects men writ large on the grinding funk of “Hen in the Foxhouse.”

I really don’t care how big it is as long as you keep it out of my way, Giddens sings as strings and percussion accentuate the kiss-off of the century.

She sings about America’s promise with Jason Isbell on the rollicking celebration of good that is “Yet to Be” and fronts a jazz orchestra on the torchy ballad “Who are You Dreaming Of.”

And when the album goes out on the sub-60-second “Good Ol’ Cider” and Giddens’ banjo, the listener is left to go back to the beginning to puzzle over how she makes it hang together. Several spins later, it’s clear it doesn’t matter. That she did it is the greatest surprise of all.

Summary: AVALANCHE needs detailed blueprints of the reactors. They need train-system plans, ID cards for travel, intel on Shinra’s security measures. Jessie has figured out how to get them all in one swell swoop: make it an inside job. All she has to do is hack and lie her way into a job at Shinra HQ. Simple, right?

In a way, though, it doesn't matter that we once again face the epistemological conundrum of how many foxes have to be let into the henhouse before it is considered a foxhouse. The Republican plan for healthcare in this country will remain nothing, zip, bupkis. Scott will not produce anything because there's no constituency for an actual plan either in the White House or in the Republican Party. However, Nothing But The Best People will never not be funny.

Sneak preview of Prologue Page 1 of The FoxHouse. I’m really proud of the first panel so far. Upper left one looks the perfect amount of derpy for the character (name Derpy), but the bottom two panels look like they were drawn by a toddler, so im gonna redraw those tomorrow, ink it all, then if I have enough time, color it and upload the finished version here and to @thefoxhouse-official (which isn’t showing up in searches for some reason, if anybody knows why, that’d be a great help ^-^) by the end of the day tomorrow, otherwise it’ll have to wait until Saturday because of work
