four eids and a funeral // faridah àbíké-íyímídé + adiba jaigirdar
first published: 2024 read: 31 march 2024 – 14 april 2024 pages: 384 format: e-book [ARC]
genres: fiction; young adult; romance (friends to enemies to lovers); islam/muslim characters favourite character(s): said least favourite character(s): tiwa, unfortunately. also kinda safiya
rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑 thoughts: i'm sad to be so underwhelmed by this book... i was really holding out hope that this would be a good one. to clarify, four eids and a funeral is not bad, it's just... fine.
i read adiba jaigirdar's work for the first time at the beginning of this year with the dos and donuts of love, which was fine but meh and a little half-baked (no pun intended), which honestly puts it almost entirely in line with how i feel about FEAAF. and then there's faridah, who, for a long time, was right near the top of my favourite authors list after reading the ARC of ace of spades. but... i don't know if she's falling off or what. because i also read the ARC of her most recent book earlier this year, where sleeping girls lie, and again i was a bit disappointed (although the reception to that book since its release has been quite positive, so i'm in the minority). and so, while a lot of what i disliked about this book is reminiscent of what i've disliked about adiba's work, i don't know that i can entirely blame it on her alone. and it makes me sad to think that i might be going off of faridah as an author too.
to get into the details of FEAAF, it's quite a typical friends-to-enemies-to-lovers YA romance. the writing falls more on the teen side of the YA scale, so it sometimes felt a little juvenile. the conflict between the two main characters, said and tiwa, felt petty and predictable, and the issues that they went through both together and with other characters felt like they resolved themselves fairly quickly. tiwa, i felt, came off as more hard-headed and less reasonable, and it was hard to get behind her character even though i really wanted to.
i liked that the story focused on two muslim characters, which we don't see enough of in literature, tv, or film. their faith and community forms a central part of the plot, and i liked that a lot of the islamic rituals were depicted as part of the characters' day-to-day lives, not just used as something to push the plot forward. i also liked the fact that tiwa was a black muslim character, which i feel is even more underrepresented. that said, there were a couple moments where it seemed like there might be some sort of discussion about the layers of racism that black muslims face within the islamic community and how they aren't always perceived as "true muslims"... but it was so surface-level and i wish it had been dug into more. i don't know why it was brought up in the first place if it was not actually going to be explored. it's not clear how the writing was split between the authors - if adiba wrote all of said's perspective and faridah tiwa's, or if there was some other method used. i might expect the lack of depth if adiba was heavily involved in the writing of tiwa, as a lot of the big topics in dos and donuts also stopped short of saying anything meaningful. i think faridah tries to say more in her books about the big issues. but again, i don't know how the writing of tiwa and her story was handled.
the romance itself was fine. the chemistry wasn't crazy, and i didn't find myself especially rooting for them to get together, but i suppose the relationship did as much as it needed to do for the story to work.
i wish there had been a slightly deeper look at tiwa's family. they go through something pretty traumatic that i feel isn't explored enough. tiwa also has a pretty major achievement as a direct result of that traumatic event that is just brushed aside and forgotten about, which is weird as i thought it was quite a big deal. something else that is also brushed aside after the first few chapters is the inciting incident for the whole book, the titular funeral for ms. barnes. she was painted as this person who was incredibly meaningful to both tiwa and said, and yet by the end of the book i still can't really figure out why she was so meaningful to them. i feel like she's just there as a plot device (and for the cat, of course).
i know this review has been a little negative, and again, it's not a bad book, it's just fine. i was just hoping for a little more. still, this is a good book to pick up if you want a quick, lighthearted friends-to-enemies-to-lovers romance. massive thanks to Usborne and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review!

SEPTEMBER, 2009
ANGUISH floods Ellie’s chest as she witnesses decorative rosewood being lowered into the sopping dirt. It’s cinematic; watching herself from a bird’s eye view, floating above her own body. Her brain cranks at an alarming rate. Churning in attempts to convince her that she’s not actually here, staring dead at her mother’s casket. The grass sludges beneath her shoes with every unsteady shuffle of her feet.
There aren't many people around. Three of her mother’s former work friends, a service dog, and the officiant. They’re hardly acknowledging Ellie; no one would be able to stop her from leaping head-first into the ground due to the lowering clouds. Buried and suffocated by grass and mud, a feast for the maggots, but loved eternally. Every cell in Ellie’s body thrums with anxiety. Just when she trusted that her mother’s health was improving, she woke up, shrouded in ice next to a limp body and an empty pill bottle on the nightstand. The same ones her mother took to sleep throughout the night.
That was three weeks ago. She doesn’t remember calling 911.
Her best friend — her only friend is gone. And it’s permanent. This isn’t like how her mother used to scavenge the streets until dawn searching for another job before Ellie woke up. She’s not coming back to crawl into their shared, warm bed, sleep for half an hour, then help her get ready for school. No more oatmeal in the mornings. No laughter. No joy. No symmetry. Ellie’s life is forever scattered. Beaten to death until she’s leaking venomous, black blood.
There’s a man that keeps staring at her with pity: familiarity crushes her every time they lock eyes. She kind of remembers him. Somewhat. She almost forgot her shoes before coming here. He seems more upset than her. At least externally; Ellie’s rotting from the inside.
Her mother’s chamber is completely submerged underneath dirt within the next few hours. The man from earlier is much closer now.
She jumps when he whispers,
I owed your mom a favor.

OCTOBER, 2009
Ellie hates Joel. Hates her mother for leaving her with him. Hates herself for not being able to save her from the claws of addiction.
Joel’s home is always silent during the day. He gave Ellie the grace of letting her stay home until the Spring, but it’s too quiet. Music never plays and they never talk, and it’s driving her to madness. The silence makes her itch.
Until the sun sets.
She already has trouble sleeping. Her insomnia combined with the thunderous clanking that blares from the garage every night is enough to get her sobbing into her pillow until the sun rises the next morning. One night, the noise had gotten so uncontrollably loud that Ellie barged into the garage to shout every curse she recalled her mom screaming into the phone before bedtime.
She didn't expect, however, to see Joel’s legs extended out from underneath her mom’s wrecked ‘57 Chevrolet. Ellie could hear him grunting as cranking and banging of metal took over the space.
… What are you doing?
Joel rolls out from beneath the car on a creeper, face confused and smeared with dark sludge.
Why’re you up?
It’s loud. She snaps. Why is her car here.
Joel sighs. Just trying to fix it up.
For what. Ellie eyes the cracked windshield. She somehow remembers how a rock hit it on the freeway when she was six. Her mom was livid. She can’t drive it anymore.
Joel’s face twists uncomfortably. It’s almost comical; the seemingly boiling child stands at a whopping four-foot-three with her fists clenched, burning holes through her bright yellow Spongebob pjs. Her glare sharpens when he mumbles,
Kid…
So you stole her freaking car? Her eyes swelter, brows hauled downward and hands in fists. He sits up straight, palms up in surrender, wrench in hand. How’d he even get back into their old house?
No, I — He rushes, She asked me to try n’ get it started again. That’s all. I… I shoulda asked you —
Ellie’s not sure why she’s so enraged, but she’s hollering with a pointed index in his direction, berating him, degrading him with sobbed vulgarities. Pushes him hard when he rises to comfort her. Eyes him with so much disdain that he flinches.
She hates him. She misses her mom.
The guest room door slammed shut with the click of a lock. She screamed for her mother for hours. Voice shrieking so loud that the neighbors came knocking after the first fifteen minutes. Cops pounded on Joel’s door and proceeded to conduct a wellness check on the household after an hour.
Their presence made Ellie swallow her scorn. Ellie’s already received a small taste of what it’s like to be in the system. She vowed to never reenter as if her life depended on it.

NOVEMBER, 2009
Joel made Ellie chocolate chip pancakes for her birthday.
Breakfast is silent, per usual. Light clinks of utensils on silverware and breathing are the only proof of life in the room. Ellie refuses to touch the squared slices of pineapple. It was her mother’s favorite, despite her complaints of an itchy mouth after every juicy piece.
Your mom and I…
Ellie pauses, skeptic eyes connecting with Joel’s. He’s treading light, she can tell. The nerves in his fingers are evident; The sorrow in his eyes suffocates her. Joel’s gaze drops onto his plate at the scrutiny he receives from across the table.
She’s a good friend of mine, He mutters before his lips turn downward. Was.
Ellie snorts humorlessly, Way to rub it in.
Joel’s eyes flutter shut as he sighs, I’m… Sorr—
Were you the one she told? Her tone is sharp. Unforgiving. I heard her on the phone a few days before she did it.
A storm flurries in the man’s gaze. A familiar one; It’s identical to when she would catch her mother in the middle of night talking to herself with a bottle in her hand. The winds in his pupils take her back to one of the darkest times of Ellie’s life. Maybe they were closer than she assumed. They look identical when they’re guilty.
I didn’t—
But he did. He’ll never forget being on the other line with Ellie’s mother as she attempted to keep her cries to a minimum. Her croaked wails terrified him. Left wounds in his chest as his heart raced. I can’t do this to her, She’d said, I can’t, I can’t, I can’t! … Please… You owe me…
Joel did what he could over the phone. Made promises to her that he couldn’t keep, reaffirmed how much Ellie loved her. How badly she needed her mother, and eventually eased her sobs into pained whimpers. He believed the calmness she exuded prior to ending the call was a sign of understanding of her importance, but it wasn’t. Her mind and body merely accepted her fate. She was dead two mornings after.
And Ellie was a witness to it all.
Ellie’s eyes roll and sickness floods her, so she stands, You’re a liar. When you’re ready to tell the truth… You know where I am. She doesn’t bother to push her chair in, clean her dishes, pause at his calls of her name. Her feet stomp through the hallway, marrow searing beneath her skin. The guest room door slams shut and she breaks, guarded by the plainness of the beige walls while tears flow.
She knows he knew. Why else would her mother leave her with him?
-
-
When Ellie got up to use the restroom hours later, she nearly tripped over a teddy bear holding a birthday cake. With candles. She’s never received a gift before.
She doesn’t tell him that she slept for an hour with it hugged to her chest.
Tumblr media
The noises in the garage halt for a week. Ellie still can’t fall asleep. Joel has the same problem, she’s discovered. She finds him sprawled out on the couch one night, burning holes through the roof with a picture frame in his arms. She watches him silently for some time, perched behind the main wall of the hallway.
Hey.
Joel’s acknowledgement earns a gasp followed by scuffling, and he snorts. He sits up and sets the dusty frame on the cushion in front of him, noting how awful Ellie is at hiding; It makes him smile. Barely, but he’s endeared; Her entire arm was exposed. He can even see her duck-shaped slippers from where she’s tucked behind the wall.
Ellie.
She doesn’t come out, and he sighs. His heart twists painfully when he hears a wet sniffle. He’s up and moving when a guttural sob echoes from the hallway, crouching down in front of Ellie with her knees squeezed into her heaving chest. Joel’s heart cracks at her flushed cheeks drenched in salt. Talking won’t calm her, he knows it, but he’s unsure of what else to do. Ellie… isn’t an emotional kid, but he hushes her, attempts to cradle, apologizes softly.
But when her wet eyes pinch open, she unravels and falls into him completely. Her arms squeeze around his neck in a deadly grip and she cries and coughs and whines for her mother. Joel holds her just as tightly as she hangs off him.
We're gonna be fine, sweetheart. He mumbles, and he feels her head shake in denial, tucked in the crook of his neck. His knees wobble, and a soothing hand rises to caress the back of her head; He's never seen a kid this hopeless. It makes him wonder.
What the hell did she witness in that house?
Tumblr media
Ellie’s always struggled to fall asleep alone.
Her need to be coddled to dreamland was always a mystery to her mother. Skin-to-skin was a normal trait for infants, toddlers, maybe even a little over, but at age ten? Eleven, and unable to fall asleep without the feeling or knowledge of a loved one present? There was only one time where she recalled her mother carrying her to her own room to rest, but the second the door clicked shut, she was up. Awake. Alert and exposed to harm. Or, at least that’s what she convinced herself.
She crawled into her mother’s bed minutes later and snoozed throughout the entire night. She didn’t hear the end of it when the sun rose.
Joel doesn’t berate her, though.
I can’t sleep by myself, she’d said to him after she calmed from her breakdown in the living room. They’d sat on the couch as he rubbed a comforting palm down her back, her small ones coming up to wipe her wet cheeks.
How come?
She scoffed, Scared of the dark, I guess? I dunno. I just can’t.
Joel hummed in understanding.
I’m like that, too. Sometimes.
Ellie snickered wetly, You’re old, though. It’s not the same.
Joel scoffed and snatched his hand away in mocked hurt. I’m not old!
The gray hairs say otherwise!
That night was the first time they ever laughed together. The first time Ellie laughed since her mother’s death, and it carried on until she knocked out beside him on the couch.
For Joel, though, he couldn’t rest. Not when Ellie favored his daughter that much. Whenever he feels as though he’s progressing, letting go of grief, something life changing — disastrous — forces him right back to square one. Meeting Ellie was one of those moments. He tried to keep his weeping to a minimum as he held her sleeping form, eyes glued to the picture of him hugging his baby after her first soccer win.

DECEMBER, 2009
It’s New Year’s Eve, and Ellie’s trapped inside the garage with Joel.
Watching him tweak her mother’s vehicle has aided her raging boredom… To a certain degree. When he starts getting nerdy and raving about car parts, she tunes him out, despite the slight interest she’s taken with underneath the hood.
The connecting wires, the bolts, the valves and cranks and this manual makes absolutely zero sense—
Can you stop dillydallyin’ around n’ hand me that?
Ellie’s gobsmacked reading is paused when she passes Joel the manual, dark sludge-covered hands staining the fading paper. She cringes.
Ellie watches silently as Joel inspects the contents, nodding to himself as his eyes flicker from the vehicle to the booklet, mapping out his next moves of attack. His eyes sparkle and curiosity sparks in her.
Did you fix it?
Joel only murmurs to himself, and Ellie’s eyes roll. She inches closer to him and waves a hand in front of his eyes. Hellooo? Is it gonna start?
… I think so, kid. His head shakes in disbelief, If I can get that transmission replaced, it might be alright.
Ellie’s brows furrow… What on earth is a transmission?
I’ve been workin’ on cars for a while. I can tell you now that finding such an essential part for a model this old is gonna be tough. Might cost me an arm n’ leg.
Ellie shrugs, You’ll figure it out, old man.
He stares down at her blankly, Gee, thanks. Hand me that wrench, assistant.
Ellie mocks glee on her skip to the rolling cart, Gosh golly dang, does this mean I’m hired?
He jokingly snatches the tool from her extended hand. Little bugger. And just like that, you’re not gettin’ paid. How’s it feel to be outta funds?
WAAAAAAA—
Ellie’s fake wails earn her a deep holler.
Ellie oversees Joel until the clock strikes twelve, following his line of vision on every rusted compartment of the vehicle. Stood attentively at his side as he pointed out the carefully crafted machinery, listing their parts despite Ellie’s protest of forgetfulness. There are so many names for everything; Building cars seems so complicated, but curiosity sparks in her. She starts to think: maybe cars aren’t so boring.
Tumblr media
Another sleepless night for the both of them; Might as well commit to movie night. Fireworks are still going off in the small neighborhood hours later. The booming colors in the sky makes Joel's teeth grind. Reminds him of the time he took Sarah to Santa Monica Pier.
Joel?
Mhm?
… What favor did you owe my mom?
Thickness builds in his throat the second Ellie mentions her. He sets the large bowl of chocolate-doused popcorn onto the coffee table, reaching for the remote to turn the movie down. Not off, down. Ellie hates feeling like she’s being scolded.
Joel doesn’t look at her, but her eyes are glued on the side of his face.
Umm… He scratches his face, Did your mom ever mention me to you? Ellie denies with a hum.
Joel’s mind whirs back to the first time he met Anna: sophomore year. He was exhausted, drained, barely making it, but despite being miserable, he still cared deeply for his education. He studied until his eyes burned, jotted down notes until his hand cramped and the librarian was gently urging him to head home.
She… We were friends in college. He fonds, We met at an ice cream truck.
Weird. Ellie notes causally, She hates dairy.
… Yeah. She does. Joel coughs to mask the brokenness in his voice.
Tumblr media
Anna was… a genius, to put it lightly. Academically gifted to an intimidating degree. Her mind was a camera; She’d scan one excerpt from the thickest novel once and still manage to repeat it word for word years later. They had comms together; Her voice sounded like tweeting birds whenever she recited her prepared speech like it was nothing. She was an emotional speaker, entranced everyone in the room, and always ended with a question that forced students and professors to self-reflect. Joel wouldn’t call it a crush… Merely admiration. Envy. He was motivated whenever he left comms.
He’ll never forget the image of her, sweating and worn, carrying what seemed like a twenty-pound backpack — all stuffed with calculus books — while ordering a can of Sprite from the humming, beaten down truck. Anna didn’t leave after the vendor handed her the soft drink. She simply turned to Joel, inspected him from head to toe, and turned back to the vendor.
I’ll cover whatever he gets, too. With a thumb aimed at him. He nearly choked.
A free snow cone couldn’t halt the racing in his chest.
I know what you are.
What, He questioned without a stutter.
You fix cars? Anna quirked a brow at him. Joel’s brows pull downward. How did she know that? He’s fixed one car since he’s been enrolled. His buddy pulled up in front of his dorm asking for a windshield repair. But he shrugs, feigning nonchalance. I dunno.
The green-eyed girl scoffs and sips from her nearly emptied can.
You down to replace a tire? Some jackass thought it would be funny to leave a rusty nail in our parking lot.
Our. She must have roommates… or lives where he does, he thinks. For how much? Not a beat missed.
Her shoulders lift, I dunno. How much does a tire cost?
Depends on the model. What d’you drive?
A chevy. Don’t ask the year, I’m not sure. It was a hand-me-down.
A slight pause between them before Anna suggests with a sigh,
Come see ‘er.

Thar she blows.
Joel can’t help but snicker at the woman in front of him, posing right next to her teetered vehicle. It’s quite charismatic; the bright pink bumper stickers, the crisp turquoise paint job, the slight scratch on the trunk. It’s nice. Classically vintage; it suits her.
A beauty, he notes with his eyes locked onto Anna’s. She gives a hum in agreement.
Revive her, if ya don’t mind. I’m desperate and can’t sue, so. Joel nods and inspects the damage on her tire. The air is nearly fully gone, and it’s making her drive slump.
Tire shouldn’t be more than thirty-five… Gonna have to head home for some stuff. Willing to wait an hour? When he turns to her, they’re shoulder to shoulder.
Anna smirks, Whatever you need, mechanic.
My dad, Joel corrects, He taught me the basics when I was like… twelve.
Her voice lowers, Good on him… Earned me a discount, eh? A hand claps down on his shoulder and gives it an encouraging squeeze, and he revs to life.
He swears the tips of his ears are red hot, Sure… minus that deposit. I needa twenty for emotional damages.
Fuck off. Her eyes are soft, Might never go to the shop again. You’re officially my car fixer-upper. Fuck these grease-balls n’ their price spikes.
Joel snorts, You get into that many goddamn accidents?
She leans in closer, and his throat closes. Slams shut. Turns to dust.
You’ll find out, mechanic.
Tumblr media
That’s why you’re spending so much time on it, Ellie notes at Joel’s retelling before a harsh gasp escapes her. Dude, were you in love with my mom or somethin’?
The man stutters and coughs, No — what? I told you she was a frien—
Ellie snickers with a judgmental point, Yeaaah, yeaaah, I know how these things go. You sucker!
What the hell — I’m not a sucker… And what things—
Anna and Joeeel sitting in a tree! —
A pillow smacks Ellie dead in the face, and she topples over in cackles. Joel rubs deep in his temples. Ellie would’ve loved Sarah. Two little bullies who feast on his suffering.
No more storytelling. I’m going to bed.
You can’t! Remember? Ellie hollers as tears fall from her eyes. She coos at Joel when he lifts himself off the couch and down the hall, trying to mask his small smile.
Aww! C’mon, old man, it was a joke!
I can’t wait for you to go back to school, ya vermin!

An exhausted Ellie creeps into Joel’s room half an hour later. She sighs in relief when she doesn’t hear snoring. Her mom was the worst when she was tired. She tiptoes across the carpeted floors until she’s in front of the unoccupied side of the mattress, stealthily adjusting the blankets and pulling back the sheets.
She slowly manages to tuck herself in, fixing the pillows so her head rests on the cold side of the case, exhaling happily at the warmth defrosting her limbs.
The second she dozed off, she yanked to consciousness by raspy sarcasm. Her eyes roll underneath her lids.
You can’t, either. Joel croaks, Remember?
Tumblr media
JANUARY, 2010
Five days until school. Five days until misery. Five days until… strangers. Ellie’s skin crawls whenever she thinks about being an enclosed space with snot-nosed boys and soggy lunches.
And math… Gross.
Joel has been more than willing to postpone Ellie’s enrollment whenever she becomes anxious, but she always denies his requests. She’s grown to like Joel, but… he’s not the best teacher, especially social studies. Reviewing one of her old packets nearly gave him an aneurysm. She can’t afford to be homeschooled by him.
What's been the best distraction from her impending doom?
Binge watching Cars for the billionth time… And helping Joel patch up that blue Chevy.
They celebrated their first victory last night for repairs, at least: Joel stuck and twisted the key to start up the engine, and it managed to stutter to life. For less than five seconds. The headlights barely came on and an old Foreigner record broke through the crackly speaker. They rejoiced with the brightest smiles as their hands slapped the dashboard before the vehicle crashed out once more.
A glimmer of hope. A chance for reconnection. Anna’s sending them messages. The joy in that car shifted to grievance; Joel had to cradle Ellie in his lap as she wept into his shoulder.
But there’s hope. Ellie wanted nothing more than to get this car working after that. Duty calls, though, and the alarm’s coming from a backpack.
Tumblr media
You got this, kid. Stop stressin’.
Ellie, without a doubt in her mind, does not got this.
Screaming children, muddy slides, bloody band aids; they’re all on the other side of that office door. Her worst nightmare has come to life, and she desires nothing more than to hide out in her mom’s car forever. The bag strapped around her shoulders matches the weight of a body. She refuses to let go of Joel’s hand as he speaks with the giggly receptionist who’s too happy to see him (what the hell), but it's okay; he’s holding hers just as tightly. Just as paranoid, apparently.
She’ll be with Mrs. Lawson for the remainder of the year. Ellie hears the receptionist say over her pounding heart, She’s incredible! I’m sure they'll develop an amazing bond.
Ellie’s palms are sweltering. Joel must feel it because his thumb nuzzles into her wrist. She’s not built for this. Maybe returning so soon wasn’t a great idea. She can’t do this without her mom.
Cool backpack, Spidey, is said from behind her, and she stiffens instantly.
She has a Spider-man backpack.
Hush. An older man’s voice replies. Sounds strained. Stressed, but he only receives a light snicker from her in return.
Ellie watches with squinted eyes as a young girl gets escorted towards the front of the office by… the principal, she assumes? He seems fancy in his suit slacks.
You stay right here until I get your uncle on the phone, The suited man is stern towards the girl, who plops down on one of the waiting chairs. Backpack and all, You can explain to him how you swore at a teacher. I’m not dealing with this from you today.
M’kay, Mr. Harris.
Ellie observes the entire scene indiscreetly. Her stares are obvious, glued to the clearly agitated dean who stomps into his office.
Where’d you get your backpack?
Ellie’s stunned at your sudden whisper. She shocks herself when she quietly stutters,
Um… Walmart?
You smile, I like it. I want one.
Ellie simply nods, but gets paused before she can redirect her attention to Joel.
Are you new? Your voice grows quieter when you look over your shoulder. Right at the principal’s door. I am, too. I just moved schools.
This shocks the brunette. The new year just started, and you're already locked in the office with evidently angry staff.
Yeah… I’m new.
Something in your grin shifts. Ellie’s nails lock into Joel’s hand. … Interesting—
Young lady! Did Mr. Harris give you permission to speak?
You audibly ponder like the attendance clerk asked you to solve a riddle.
No, ma’am. I apologize.
Then hush. Not another word.
Ellie watches you fold your hands politely, twiddling your thumbs. Your eyes don’t leave her backpack.
Ready, kiddo?
Her eyes finally reconnect with Joel’s, encouraging and chocolate, and she nods. He guides her to the office exit where her new life resides. Before their departure, she can’t help but take one last respectful glance over her shoulder. She finds you staring with a quirked lip and your wrist outstretched like your shooting spider webs at her. Ellie jerks her head forward and releases the breath she’s been holding.
What a weirdo.

Hi 🍋
I know you're busy with your rewatch but I was wondering cause I miss your rec lists: do you have a rec list for fics that heavily feature the 126's different religions? Them celebrating different holidays or discussing stuff or such?
Would love to see such a list, I feel like the fandom should have a general list where these fics are featured 💙
Hi anon!! Thank you so much for this lovely ask! Perfect timing, actually, because the fic I’m writing now, which I’ve affectionately been calling Eid Fic, centers around Marjan’s relationship with her faith and her family. It will heavily feature Marjan & TK discussing their own faiths, and sharing memories of holidays, fasting and family. And also how they grow together over the years and form their own found family.
I’m sorry my rec lists have fallen to the side lately! You are not the only person who’s asked me about them, and I promise they’re coming back! I’ve just been feeling a little overwhelmed lately (can you just be whelmed?). But I love any excuse to rec some of the amazing fics in this fandom. And this theme in particular is really exciting to me because we don’t have nearly enough of it! I have scoured by memory and my bookmarks for you, and here’s what I’ve found. Unsurprisingly, it mostly focuses on Carlos and TK’s faiths.
Disclaimer: this is by no means a comprehensive list, it is just what I remembered and what I found. If you know of other fics that feature religion, especially other characters, please reply/reblog with the links!
Carlos - Catholicism
The Line I'd Walk (For You) by TearsThisSideofHeaven Carlos lights a candle and says a prayer to St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters when TK returns to work after being shot. TK asks him where he goes, so Carlos brings him to church one morning.

I'm Not A Fortress, But I Will Try To Protect You TK & Marjan get together for pie after Marj breaks up with Salim and before TK goes back to Carlos. Marjan voices her fear of disappointing her parents with the news of the breakup, and TK offers to be there for her when she makes the phone call. Marjan also gives TK some perspective on what it was probably like for Carlos growing up in a conservative religious home.

a case of cruel to be kind by @maxbegone This is a really lovely AU based on the movie About Time. The plot is that TK discovers he can travel back in time to events in his past, and that he inherited the gift from Gwyn. But at the heart of the story is a really beautiful examination of Gwyn and TK’s relationship. This includes a look at some traditional Jewish funeral and grieving practices, through the eyes of TK after Gwyn’s passing.
The last day of Hanukkah by @ladytessa74 A very sweet little Hanukkah fic set in Tessa’s Elijah verse, in the future where Tarlos has a four-year-old named Elijah. This story gives us a glimpse of Hanukkah in the Strand-Reyes house, the little traditions and the food.
Looking at it now, it all seems so simple by @liminalmemories21 Enzo and Jonah come to town, set between seasons 3 & 4 (though S4 kinda makes it an AU now 😖). Explores TK’s relationship with his faith through Carlos’s eyes, they celebrate Hanukkah and have a Shabbos dinner, and there are a few conversations about what parts of their own cultures and religions they want to bring into the family they’re forming, and how they want to raise any future kids.
Rosa Mundi by fiddlersgreen TK, Carlos and Owen go to New York for Gwyneth's funeral. I must admit it’s been a minute since I read this, but this author gives a really lovely perspective of what Gwyn’s funeral might have been like with the Jewish traditions and customs.

It’s Ramadan Again
Ramadan has started. It feels different for me this time around.
For a lot of my life I felt like praying to Allah was dumb. I was never someone who relied on people to help me and the thought of asking some…thing in the sky that I couldn’t see, touch, or hear to help me out felt unrealistic. Sure I’d do the thing that everyone has probably done at one point or another, said a silent prayer in a moment of crisis as a shield. Beyond that I was never interested in the “Alhamdulilah” “Subhanallah” “Ya Allah” said on a daily basis. Or the prayers for myself or family or community. Trusting another being to handle what I couldn’t handle myself. Could never bring myself to supplicate to something that wouldn’t always give me what I wanted anyway.
My faith had less to do with Allah and more to do with the comfort in the ritual. Feeling naked going out without the hijab I had started wearing when I was five years old.  Eating with my right hand. Washing myself after the toilet. The triumph of getting through another long day without food or drink, shared at the table with family. Coming together for Eid salah. All of it was devoid of the context of Allah, done more for the sake of community and less for the soul. Which is why I never prayed, didn’t care for reading the Quran when Hooyo wasn’t breathing down my neck about it, never particularly interested in going to Hajj.
I remember conversations with other Muslims, never the ones I’d consider my best friends, about Allah and his existence and growing up Muslim without faith.
Then, my sister ended up in the hospital, complaining about chest pains and stomach problems. Then, my mom called me from the hospital while I was at work the Friday after the Thanksgiving long weekend to let me know she was doing extremely poorly. Then she died four days after we had traveled to visit her in the hospital she had been in for the past month.
Then I took a flight the next morning with my siblings to go to the funeral of the girl whose messages I’d always taken for granted. Who loved me so dearly and whose attention I’d slightly resented.
Then I entered the room Mama, Hooyo, and our sisters were washing her body in, having to see with my own eyes otherwise I’d never believe it.
Then I prayed the funeral prayer for this girl who should’ve turned 16 in a month, so excited to learn how to drive.
Then we visited her grave that day, and every Saturday we could, feeling like absolute shit that every visit meant another time she’d be left alone.
Then we took our three days of mourning and went back into motion.
I still text her number every now and then, stay up at night reading past conversations between us. I never quite got past the anger stage of grief. Don’t think I ever will.
I think it was a year later that I noticed my relationship with Allah had changed. That I realised I’m comfortable with asking some unseen being for ease, for the safety of my family, for the chance to thrive.
I realised that being able to put my worries and hopes onto someone not human who was always looking out for me one way or another felt more satisfying.
That moving through this world and believing that when we die it’s done wasn’t good enough for me anymore.
That doing all the rituals and believing in Allah meant I would get another chance to see her.
All the practices that I had understood as and that felt cultural to me had deeper meaning with the right intention. The beauty of our religion is that every moment and every movement is an opportunity for worship. For remembrance. An opportunity to draw nearer.
So this Ramadan feels different. It’s not as if my sister had died this past year. I certainly wouldn’t have been possible for me to write those words so frankly a year or even two years after she passed. I guess it took three years for me to reach a point where I would be practicing my religion in a more meaningful way. Not perfect and maybe for the wrong reasons.

Slaughtering for one's father and grandfather every year تصفح برقم المجلد > Volume 13 > Book on funerals > Dedicating good deeds to the deceased > Slaughtering for one's father and grandfather every year Slaughtering for one's father and grandfather every year Q: I have a cousin who slaughters an animal on behalf of his father and grandfather every year. I advised him many times but he said that (Part No. 13; Page No. 256)  he inquired about this issue and came to know that there is no sin in doing so. Please guide me. Is what he says correct or not? [This was previously published in this collection, vol. 6, p. 385.')] A: If this person slaughters an animal throughout the four days of `Eid-ul-Adha (the Festival of Sacrifice) on behalf of his father or grandfather with the intention to offer sacrifice, then there is no harm in doing so. If he slaughters an animal at any time intending to give charity to the poor on their behalf, then there is no harm in doing so, because charity benefits both the living and the dead, whether it is meat or something other than meat, i.e., money, food, and the like. All these things benefit the living and the dead. It is authentically narrated from Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) that he ...was asked about giving charity on behalf of one's mother after her death and whether she will receive a reward for that. He (peace be upon him) said: Yes. [Narrated by Al-Bukhari, Book on funerals, Chapter on sudden death, no. 1388; and Muslim, Book on Zakah, Chapter on the dead getting reward for the Sadaqah given on their behalf, no. 1004.')] Furthermore, it is related in Sahih Muslim (may Allah be merciful to him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When a person dies, their acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, knowledge by which people benefit, or a pious son (or daughter), who prays for them (for the deceased). [Narrated by Imam Ahmad, Rest of the section on the Hadiths narrated by the Companions who narrated a large number of Hadiths, no. 8627; and Muslim, Book on bequest, no. 1631, both narrations read: "When a person dies, their works (righteous acts) come to an end, apart from three:.."')] In conclusion, giving charity on behalf of the deceased is beneficial to them according to the consensus of Muslim scholars. The same applies to supplicating Allah (Exalted be He) for them. Thus, a person can slaughter an animal on behalf of his father, grandfather, or anyone else, whether intending to offer it as charity or as a sacrifice to be slaughtered throughout the four days of `Eid-ul-Adha (the Festival of the Sacrifice) to draw nearer to Allah (Exalted and Glorified be He). But, it is not allowed for him to appoint a fixed day or month other than the four days of `Eid-ul-Adha, for this sacrifice, except when focusing on the honored times (Part No. 13; Page No. 257)  like Ramadan and the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah. There is a reward for the dead as well as the person offering the sacrifice according to the degree of their sincerity to Allah (Exalted be He) and the lawfulness of their earnings. On the contrary, if such a person does so intending to draw nearer to the dead as done by those sacrificing for the dead, the sun, the moon, or Jinn (creatures created from fire), then this will be considered an act of major Shirk (associating others in worship with Allah in His Divinity or worship), because it is not permissible for any one to draw close to any person through slaughtering, vowing, or any other act of worship that is due to Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) because He (Glorified and Exalted be He) says: Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "Verily, my Salât (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allâh, the Lord of the ‘Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists). [Surah Al-An`am, 6: 162] "He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims." [Surah Al-An`am, 6: 163] And: Verily, We have granted you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) Al-Kauthar (a river in Paradise). [Surah Al-Kawthar, 108: 1] Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only). [Surah Al-Kawthar, 108: 2] In addition, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Allah curses whomever slaughters (a sacrifice) to other than Allah… [Narrated by Muslim, Book on sacrifices, Chapter on it is forbidden to sacrifice the animal for other than Allah..., no. 1978.')] (Related by Muslim in his Sahih) Thus, slaughtering for the Jinn, the dead, or other creatures, such as idols, planets, and so on, whether the slaughterer hopes for their intercession or believes that they benefit them or save them from an illness or such like, this is Munkar (that which is unacceptable or disapproved of by Islamic law and Muslims of sound intellect) and Shirk. Consequently, whoever slaughters on behalf of his father or grandfather believing that he an benefit him, cure a patient, or draw him closer to Allah is the same as the person who slaughters for the sun, the moon, or the stars. All such acts are types of Shirk. We supplicate to Allah to grant us safety.            https://www.alifta.gov.sa/En/IftaContents/IbnBaz/Pages/FatawaDetails.aspx?cultStr=en&View=Page&PageID=2390&PageNo=1&BookID=14 https://shamela.org/src/files/contents_url.php?id=9527b6a19f54dc46d9770b96dd7898cd #Islam #Quran #Hadith #Sunnah #Fatwa

Parey Hut Love won't be a frothy entertainer says director during KT cast visit
Tumblr media
STANDING OUT FROM the crowd; it is an advertiser's mantra, although when applied to the general public's passions such as food and, in this case, film, sticking your head above the parapet can be fraught with difficulty. Just as when a Dubai restaurant attempts to zhuzh up a tried and tested dish - we can't help but think of the 'ruined' biryani accusations we have received in response to a favourable review of an avant-garde eatery - tampering with a South Asian rom-com often prompts similar outcry. Although not strictly humorous, who can forget the laughable reaction Bollywood's Love Story 2050 (2008) provoked when the film dabbled in a bit of time travel to tell the, well... love story? It is this delicate tightrope walk Pakistani director Asim Raza has hoped to successfully navigate with his latest offering, the 'big fat desi' spectacular, Parey Hut Love, opening in time for Eid Al Adha on August 8. Visiting the Khaleej Times office on Sunday he and cast members: Sheheryar Munawar, Maya Ali, Zara Noor Abbas and Ahmad Ali Butt, were in a more ebullient mood than the movie stars who normally breeze through, perhaps a result of the family atmosphere created on set to which they alluded. Diving into love Despite being only his second feature (Ho Mann Jahaan came out in 2016) Raza's directorial cachet has been curated through 25 years in the business, beginning with commercials before graduating to music videos and TV series. The commitment to making Parey Hut Love a success, however, was immediately clear as the 52-year-old took an assured lead on the questions from the start. A stance supported by his, at all times, adoring actors. "The more traditional looking the film is the more difficult it is to get heard," Raza began when asked about penetrating the saturated rom-com market. "We have tried to add some substance to it. It won't just be a frothy entertainer. It would have layers and values. It would have all the right ingredients. Once you get home you will be carrying something with you." While not explicitly stating what those components could be, principal actor and one of the movie's producers, Munawar, let us in on some of the picture's less than traditional elements. First his character, also called Sheheryar, is a 'commitment-phobe' - totally against love. Then there's the choice of the protagonists' professions. The three friends to which we are primarily introduced: Sheheryar, Arshad (Butt) and Shabbo (Abbas), all co-habit and dream of entering the film industry. "Life is going well before he runs into the beautiful Saniya (Ali). He has to choose between staying a commitment-phobe or fall madly in love," Munawar said. "I'm playing a typical Karachi wannabe director," Butt added, before going on to highlight Arshad's quirkier and almost nefarious traits. "He knows his best friend wants to be an actor, so he's always exploiting his situation. He's always maneuvering him into some odd places. In a way when a new character enters their lives, he's a bit on the defensive. He doesn't want to share his friends. It's all about his insecurity." The female roles may be not as unconventional with Abbas revealing Shabbo is somewhat naïve and, "in love with someone but cannot say it to their face," and Ali drawing on the similarities between herself and Saniya: "It wasn't too difficult for me to play her. Saniya is beautiful and mature," though considering the latter's acting credentials on popular Pakistani television serials and relative newcomer Abbas' raw magnetism even during our brief meeting, the two will no doubt stand out. On the difference in scale between television and film work, Ali said: "In the cinema, things are larger than life and you have to act accordingly. Credit goes to Asim. He always said, 'you have to act like a star'. He was very confident in all of us." Four weddings and a... Written by actor and film author, Imran Aslam, Raza credits the script for inspiring over six locations for scenes in Parey Hut Love including many around Pakistan and items in Istanbul, Turkey. He made clear it is somewhat unfair, however, to draw the comparison between this plot and that of British romantic comedy Four Weddings And A Funeral (1994) as has been reported. "Inspirations had to be taken," Raza said. "A lot of classic films were in Imran's head. This movie has four weddings, so it ended up sounding similar. When you watch the film you realise that is the only similarity. The character arcs are different. The story is very different." One aspect viewers will certainly find distinctive is the number of cameos Parey Hut Love boasts. Mahira Khan, Meera, Fawad Khan and Sonya Jehan are just a few names we can expect to pop up. "Within the same film I got to romance Maya Ali and Mahira Khan and share screen space with Meera. It was both scary and entertaining," Munawar said. "It was very important those small scenes should be done by people who make the most of them. Every sentence in the film should make sense and that's why having big names in small scenes works," Raza added. A leap forward After touching on the issue of how the Pakistan film industry is faring in today's climate, Raza returned to the issue of balance. Just as he has to counter audience expectations with his creative vision, so too financial issues must be taken into account. "It can be a struggle between commercial and substantive cinema," he said. "You are always reminded about the commercial aspect because film is expensive. A lot of investment goes into it. We have such little outlets for our cinema, we are not always able to do our things our way and break even." Our outlook for Parey Hut Love: they have done it their way and will more than recoup their outlay. Asim's take on the Pakistani cinema landscape "There are constant hiccups, but it is pretty steady. We are lucky that every few months a new person comes in and it is their turn. If we keep supporting each other instead of cutting each other down, this is how an industry is created." Which famous actor turned down a part? "Only one," was the answer director Asim Raza gave when asked if anyone had ever declined a role in any of his projects. Such is the filmmaker's draw it was assumed Raza only had to pick up the phone to have actors queuing round the block to appear in his movie. "Humayun Saeed. I asked him to do a small part in this film," he elaborated, eliciting cries of disbelief. A message from Sheheryar "It's a present for Eid. Big thank you to Khaleej Times and Suhail Galadari for always supporting Pakistani cinema." Read the full article

where sleeping girls lie // faridah àbíké-íyímídé
first published: 2024 [to be released 14 march] read: 17 january 2024 – 24 january 2024 pages: 576 format: ebook [ARC]
genres: fiction, young adult, mystery, light romance (lesbian) favourite character(s): elizabeth least favourite character(s): baz (sorry!)
rating: 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑 thoughts: so. i read ace of spades as an ARC back in 2021 and i can't really explain the way i was truly obsessed with this book (you can read my original review here). i read it in four days, bought a physical copy when it came out, talked about it to other people, etc. it was one of my favourite reads that year and it put faridah very firmly on my list of authors to watch. imagine my excitement when i was offered a chance to read her sophomore book early.
well. where sleeping girls lie just didn't hit the same. it's hard not to compare to her debut because there are a lot of shared elements and themes between the two, but i couldn't help noticing that WSGL lacked the spark, the excitement, and the punch of AOS.
one of the major faults is just how uneventful it was. the pacing felt so slow and only by around 80% in did i find myself thinking "oh, something's actually happening now". threads are picked up and then dropped for so long that by the time they came back around, i didn't care anymore. or things went unexplained for so long that i feel they became largely irrelevant to the plot. i wasn't necessarily bored but i did feel like i was in a perpetual state of waiting for the story to pick up. the overall plot was not as groundbreaking or exciting as the one in AOS, but i appreciated what it wanted to say.
the characters were also a little lacklustre. chiamaka and devon from AOS felt well-written, they were relatable in ways, and they had personality. sade, as the main character in WSIG, didn't really have much personality outside of her trauma. who was she, as a person? i don't really know. the side characters were okay, although i will say that i really liked the sense of intrigue and duplicity written into the male characters like august and jude. this will probably be an unpopular opinion but i didn't care for baz as the best friend at all; his manic pixie dream boy schtick got tired real quick.
i'm not so sure about how good the writing was in general. the whole book felt like it could have done with another thorough edit, and definitely a cut down in length by at least 100 pages. some of the dialogue also felt stilted and clunky. the story ultimately had an interesting and relevant message but i struggled to feel much depth from the writing.
i didn't dislike this book, i think i just had very high expectations following AOS and with the similarities between the two i wasn't expecting quite so many differences in quality. i would absolutely still go ahead and read more books by faridah (i've still got four eids and a funeral on my reading list) and would love to see her branch out to stories perhaps with an older cast, set outside of high school, or not focused on elite teens.
massive thanks to Usborne Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review!

The universal tragedy is that Karuna is very intelligent in four languages.
The universal tragedy is that Karuna is very intelligent in four languages.
Karuna is a global conspiracy. If not a global conspiracy, why doesn't Karuna attack the Jews? They are just going back and forth. Karuna is very sensible only going to Masjids. In the crowds of utility stores in government houses in the Assembly Halls in the Corona offices, Shi'ite mourners in the houses of these Islamist elements have family systems and where ten and fifteen men and women live in factories and in factories. Work from at least 20 workers to over 500 workers. Doing nothing during work hours does not affect them. All the above persons do not perform wudoo 'or smiling when entering the factory and houses. It doesn't affect them.On the contrary, when the worshipers come to the Masjid, they take all the necessary precautions for physical cleanliness. First go to the washroom, then wash hands and then do wudoo '. Muslims wash both hands first while performing wudoo, then wash their mouths, then wash their mouths, then wash both hands to the elbows, then wipe the head, then wipe the ears, then wipe the neck and then both feet. Wash to the ankle. The arrangement of wudoo 'is such that wherever any kind of virus or virus can hold something, it is thoroughly cleaned. Muslims gather in the Masjid during the five-time prayers, Friday, Eid-ul-Fitr and funeral prayers. The one who opposes it is the denial of the Qur'an, the denial of the hadith and the consensus of the Ummah. These religious researchers have not been handcuffed by these rulers and supporters of these rulers, but by Islamic slogans.Similarly, the founder of the Akbari religion, the Mughal emperor Akbar, created a new religion and ordered the abolition of Islamic rituals. Hazrat Mujaddid Alf-Sani Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi Farooqi opposed the order of King Akbar. Then King Akbar died like a dog due to the curse of Hazrat Mujaddid Alf-Sani Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi Farooqi. The same will happen to the Pakistani rulers and their supporters. Islamic rituals, especially the performance of prayers with the congregation, are not postponed even when fighting against the infidels. You also claim to be a Muslim and you have been talking nonsense against Islam before and now you are acting against the Islamic rites for fear of coronation. What will you do when the Antichrist comes? The fact is that you opposed the order of jihad. Allah has imposed on your hearts the fear of the Infidels and the plots of the Infidels.
Here is the Qur'anic order.
O Faith full People obey Allah and the Prophet ,also those who are in Authority. If dispute arises refer to Allah and the Prophet If you believe in Allah and the Day of Judgement . The result is always good and befitting.
4: 59 Al- Nisa
If the rule of those who enforce it is against Allah and His Prophet, then obedience is not obligatory, nor can any punishment be imposed on it. Remember that wherever the Infidels rule, the true Muslims do not disobey Allah and His Prophet. It is Pakistan and this Country has been acquired in the name of Islam and its acquisition means that Islamic slogan will be implemented here. These rulers are using handcuffs in the Masjids for those who offer prayers, teachings and invite people to prayer. These are not Muslims who scold religious researchers, but they are infidels and those who support these rulers are also Infidels. Whether it is the public or the Infidels rulers of Pakistan.
Note: If the Imam Masjid can be demolished due to the gathering of worshipers by speaking the appointed speeches and listening to its voice, why the Pakistani Prime Minister cannot be handcuffed because of the ministers's corruption. If the Pakistani rulers and the supporters of these rulers have the answer, answer with the argument that otherwise they should be drowned in shame and die in shame.

LGUs urged to report funeral homes rejecting Covid-19 remains
#PHnews: LGUs urged to report funeral homes rejecting Covid-19 remains
MANILA – Local government units (LGUs) must report to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) the funeral parlors that would refuse to provide services to persons who died of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said on Tuesday.
“Sa LGU, kung medyo matigas talaga at ayaw talaga (To LGUs, if funeral homes are defying the government’s directives), then report to the DILG. DILG knows what to do,” Nograles, spokesperson of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID), said in a virtual press conference aired on state-run PTV-4.
Nograles made the call following the admission of the East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) in Quezon City, one of the hospitals involved in the fight against Covid-19, that bodies of Covid-19 patients have piled up in the hallway of its morgue facility.
In an interview with CNN Philippines, EAMC spokesperson, Dr. Dennis Ordoña admitted that the hospital has insufficient equipment to store additional cadavers.
Ordoña said EAMC’s morgue could only accommodate up to five bodies, but the hospital recorded 20 corpses last week.
He added that some of the bodies have started to smell because these have been in the morgue for at least four days.
Nograles called on LGUs to use their “convincing power” to make sure that proper funeral services would be given to deceased Covid-19 patients.
“LGUs, please monitor the funeral homes that are in your locality. Please coordinate with them. Ask them to cooperate,” he said.
The IATF-EID has passed a resolution which seeks to penalize funeral parlors that refuse to handle the bodies of Covid-19 patients.
LGUs have been tasked to designate funeral service facilities that can handle the remains of Covid-19 fatalities.
The DILG has also been directed to monitor and penalize funeral homes that refuse to provide logistics and transport of Covid-19 remains.
Covid-19 remains should be cremated within 12 hours from the time of death, according to the guidelines set by IATF-EID.
A PHP25,000 funeral support fund will be given to indigents who died due to Covid-19.
Nograles ensured that the government, upon the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte, will make proper intervention, in case funeral parlors continue to defy the guidelines.
“It’s DILG who is on top of all of this. At sinabi na nga rin ni Pangulo na (The President already said) the government will come in already. We have to honor the 12-hour rule or regulation,” he said.
Nograles, nevertheless, expressed confidence that LGUs would be able to handle the situation.
“At para sa mga nasa negosyo nitong funeral, sundin na lang po ninyo ‘yung sinasabi ng DILG pati ng LGU (And for the funeral parlors, just follow the orders of the DILG and LGUs),” he said.
Covid-19 infections in the Philippines already climbed to 4,932.
Some 315 Covid-19 patients already died, while 242 persons recovered from the new coronavirus. (PNA)

Bukhari laid to rest: J-K forms SIT to probe editor’s killing, releases CCTV images of three suspects
As hundreds turned out for the funeral of Rising Kashmir editor Shujaat Bukhari who was laid to rest Friday in his ancestral home Kreeri in Baramulla, J&K police formed a special investigation team to probe the killing of the journalist a day earlier in Srinagar. IG Kashmir S P Pani told reporters that Bukhari’s killing was a “terror attack” and the identity of three suspects astride a motorcycle, captured in surveillance cameras, was being ascertained.A fourth person, Zubair Qayoom, had been arrested and a pistol of one of the two PSOs killed with Bukhari had been recovered.
The PSOs were identified as Constable Abdul Hameed and Constable Mumtaz Ahmad. Pani said a video showed Zubair removing the pistol. “The pistol has since been recovered and he is being questioned about his presence at the scene of the crime. So far, he has not been able to give any convincing answers,” he said. A SIT led by DIG (Central Kashmir) V K Virdi had been formed to probe the killings.
According to police, three-four gunmen were involved and fired at Bukhari’s car from two sides. Police released three photographs of the suspected assailants. These were acquired from CCTV cameras installed at several places in the city.
Kashmiri men participate in the funeral services of Shujaat Bukhari at Kreeri, Srinagar.
In two of these photographs, the suspects can be seen on a motorcycle. The rider in the front is wearing a helmet while another has a face mask. The person in the middle appears to be a teenager. “General public is requested to identify the suspects in pictures involved in terror attack at Press Enclave,” J&K Police said while posting photographs on Twitter.
Bukhari was laid to rest in Kreeri, his ancestral home in Baramulla. People from all walks of life turned out for the funeral as Kreeri village observed a complete shutdown on the eve of Eid. Amid a downpour, prayers were offered at 11 am and Bukhari was laid to rest. The large crowd at the funeral included most ministers of the J&K government, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, Congress leaders Ghulam Ahmad Mir and Saifuddin Soz and BJP leaders Abdul Ghani Kohli and Sukhnandan Kumar. Separatist leaders Yasin Malik and Zafar Akbar Bhat were also there.

School shooting victims remembered as sweet, hardworking
SANTA FE, Texas (AP) — An outgoing and “really funny” student who blocked the door to try to prevent the gunman from entering the classroom, an exchange student who aspired to work in civil service and a substitute teacher who frequently hosted gatherings were among the 10 people killed at a Texas high school.
Family members and friends of the eight students and two teachers fatally shot Friday fondly remembered their loved ones. They used such words as sweet, hardworking and loving.
Eight of the 10 were students: Kimberly Vaughan, Shana Fisher, Angelique Ramirez, Christian Riley Garcia, Jared Black, Sabika Sheikh, Christopher Jake Stone and Aaron Kyle McLeod. The other two, Glenda Perkins and Cynthia Tisdale, were substitute teachers.
At least 13 others were injured in the attack at the high school in Santa Fe, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) southeast of Houston. A 17-year-old student, Dimitrios Pagourtzis, is being held on capital murder charges.
Here are some of the victims’ stories:
GLENDA PERKINS
Perkins for years had been a substitute teacher at Santa Fe High School, where her grandchildren are students.
Student Jay Mann, a junior, tells the Houston Chronicle she always had a smile on her face, took the time to learn students’ names and became part of the fabric of the school.
Mann says she had a great attitude and “never got mad at anybody for doing something stupid.”
An all-female Galveston Mardi Gras krewe, Tutu Live Krewe, has posted on Facebook that Perkins, along with her daughter, was a member of their marching group.
ANGELIQUE RAMIREZ
The senior pastor at Dayspring Church says Ramirez was a member of the Santa Fe church’s youth ministry.
Pastor Brad Drake says she had occasionally accompanied a younger brother to the ministry at the church where her parents are among the some 150 people to attend Sunday services.
Drake on Sunday described the 15-year-old as “a sweet young lady, had a style all of her own.” He says she “almost always had a new hairstyle.”
An aunt, Sylvia Pritchett, said in a Facebook post she has “a broken heart and a soul that just can’t process all this right now.”
JARED BLACK
Black turned 17 on Wednesday and was looking forward to a party this weekend at his family’s just-purchased, above-ground swimming pool.
An older brother, Anthony, from Odessa, Texas, was planning to visit with his wife and kids. Jared also had a younger brother, Houston, 13.
The Houston Chronicle reports his family now is planning for his funeral.
His stepfather, Travis Stanich, tells the newspaper Black took daily medication for attention deficit disorder and was quiet and kind and loved art, video games and sci-fi, wrestling and wolves.
Stanich called him “a great kid” who was creative, drew cartoons and loved people.
SHANA FISHER
The mother of 16-year-old Shana Fisher believes that her daughter was intentionally targeted by Pagourtzis.
Sadie Rodriguez said Pagourtzis repeatedly made advances toward Fisher in the four months leading up to the shooting. Pagourtzis was an ex-boyfriend of Fisher’s best friend, she said.
“He kept making advances on her and she repeatedly told him no,” said Rodriguez over Facebook Messenger. “He continued to get more aggressive.”
Rodriguez said that the week before the shooting, Fisher “stood up to him” by “embarrass(ing) him in class.” Rodriguez gave no other details.
Rodriguez described her daughter as “shy and sweet” with a passion for video games. Rodriguez shared a video of Fisher from 2015, in which the teen contemplates whether or not she’ll continue making gaming videos because her computer keeps crashing.
The day of the shooting, Rodriguez wrote in a Facebook status to “love like (you’re) getting one more day with them.”
“Anything can happen,” she wrote. “I will no longer get to see my baby my 1st born anymore.”
CHRIS STONE
Stone was among a group of students who blocked the door to try to prevent the gunman from entering their art classroom, freshman Abel San Miguel, who was in the class, told The Associated Press. The shooter fired his shotgun through the door, though, striking Stone in the chest, he said.
Stone was outgoing, “really funny” and had a lot of friends, said Branden Auzston, a 17-year-old junior at Santa Fe High. He said he knew Stone for about three years, and Stone was one of his best friends.
Auzston’s mother, Nicole Auzston, described Stone as a part of her family.
“We would have done anything for him,” she said. “He’s just a great kid.”
Robert Stone told the AP by phone Saturday that his family was grieving his nephew’s death and requested privacy.
SABIKA SHEIKH
Abdul Aziz Sheikh was expecting his daughter Sabika to return home to Pakistan in a few weeks for Eid al-Fitr, the three-day holiday marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Instead, he learned that his oldest child was among those killed in the mass shooting at Santa Fe High School, where Sabika arrived as an exchange student last August.
Surrounded by mourning friends and family at his home in Karachi on Saturday, Abdul Aziz Sheikh fought back tears as he relived his frantic efforts to check whether his daughter was safe half a world away. She wasn’t returning his calls and neither were her friends. He eventually learned from the exchange program that she was among the dead.
“We are still in a state of denial. We can’t believe it. It’s like a nightmare,” Sheikh told The Associated Press.
He said his daughter was a hardworking and accomplished student who aspired to work in civil service, hoping one day to join Pakistan’s Foreign Office.
“One should not lose his heart by such kind of incidents,” he said. “One should not stop going for education to the U.S. or U.K., or China, or anywhere. One must go for education undeterred. But controlling such incidents is the responsibility of the respective governments.”
CYNTHIA TISDALE
Leia Olinde said Tisdale, her aunt and a substitute teacher at the school, was like a mother to her and helped her shop for wedding dresses last year.
“She helped me put it on, she helped fix my hair,” Olinde said through tears.
“She was wonderful. She was just so loving,” said Olinde, 25. “I’ve never met a woman who loved her family so much.”
She said Tisdale was married to her husband for close to 40 years and that they had three children and eight grandchildren.
Tisdale’s house was the center of family gatherings and she loved cooking Thanksgiving dinner and decorating her house, Olinde said.
Olinde’s fiance, Eric Sanders, said of Tisdale that “words don’t explain her lust for life and the joy she got from helping people.”
AARON KYLE MCLEOD
McLeod, a freshman who went by Kyle, could always be counted on to make light of any situation, said close friend Kali Reeves, who added she wouldn’t have been surprised if the 15-year-old “made a joke about getting shot” if he were still alive.
Reeves, 15, said she knew McLeod for years and became close friends with him in the eighth grade. She said he always had a smile on his face and loved to hang out with his friends.
“He was never one to be a sad or down person, he always had to joke or laugh about things,” she said. “He was just outgoing and super sweet. He definitely didn’t deserve this.”
Reeves heard that her friend had been shot as she was evacuating Santa Fe High School. She joked to her boyfriend that if she FaceTimed McLeod, he would have “made a joke about him getting shot,” adding that “he just always looked on the bright side of things.”
Reeves said she texted McLeod throughout the day to check up on him. She sent him one final text, saying she hopes he “gets better.” Shortly after, she checked Facebook and learned he was one of the 10 killed.
