The hint of a shape emerges. Kas closes their eyes, left hand on the lowest keyboard as their right pulls the switch. Upstairs, the crowd has fallen silent. Gilbert and Rae finally stop sniping at each other, and Kas feels more than hears Gilbert come up to stand behind them. “There,” they say. “Look.” They move to the next switch, and the shape in the pool, almost human now, falters. It turns liquid again, then gas, then solid, dripping light from its aethereal body. Kas presses a key, then another. The shape rises. The connection has been made. Another switch. A flicker. The quintessence collapses in a wave; occluding light briefly obscures the glass wall. It leaves streaks of luminescent liquid behind, snaking their way down to the pool as it starts to swirl once more. “Stop!” Gilbert shouts. “Turn it off!”

(Leandro)Thème:Le thème que nous avons choisi est l'horreur de leur situation tragique. Nous l'avons choisi car nous croyons que le besoin de migrer clandestinement en raison de la situation du pays où les gens migrent les pousse à abandonner tout ce qui leur est cher : leur culture, leur maison, leur famille, leurs amis, et bien d'autres éléments. De plus, ils entreprennent ce voyage dans des conditions pénibles et dangereuses, en compagnie de personnes qui se soucient peu de leur santé ou de leur survie. Cette réalité constitue véritablement une situation tragique, et il est essentiel de la considérer et de la mettre en lumière.

(Louis)Fulguration:Il y a plusieurs moments très marquants dans le récit, mais celui que nous avons choisi est probablement le plus choquant.

Le moment se situe au début du récit. On a le point de vue d’une femme avec un bébé qui veut immigrer en Europe. Elle va payer des passeurs pour monter dans un bateau rempli d'autres migrants à destination de l’Europe. Mais les passeurs quittent le bateau avec toute la nourriture et laissent donc le bateau à la dérive avec tous les migrants. Les plus faibles meurent de faim et ils doivent donc les jeter par-dessus bord. Parmi les gens qui meurs le bébé de cette femme vas mourir de faim et elle vas devoir le jeter par-dessus bord.

an interesting thing i learned from reading (ghislain casas, “language without voice: locutio angelica as a political issue,” in voice and voicelessness in medieval europe, ed. irit ruth kleiman) is that the word ‘hierarchy’ is from hieros, sacred, and archè, power, and was coined by pseudo-dionysius the areopagite to describe the mode of organization of angelic life.

casas quotes william of auvergne on the fundamental paradox of angelic life: that the angelic hierarchy is a city-state without government, as “where any citizen can spontaneously and honorably govern himself, there is no need of another government […] what more would such dominions […] bring to these citizens, if they led them? They would not command or do anything else than what they already do” (william of auvergne, de universo creaturarum). this in conjunction with william’s description of angelic language as a non-language, a communication without medium by beings which are “like material and visible mirrors” of divine knowledge, “luminous images, exhaling, that is reflecting […] so that one can only see in them as much as they want”*. casas describes this as the opposite of speech, a language for hiding things rather than sharing them. pseudo-dionysius’s hierarchy of angels is not only an order, but knowledge and activity; the way angels illuminate each other—that is, the extent to which they share their portion of divine knowledge—determines their places respective to each other in the order. knowledge = power, literally.

yet: “The parallel between William’s description of angelic linguistic activity and angelic political organization is both striking and subtle. In the one case, no meaning is ever truly communicated, just as in the other, no power is ever really exercised. […] Language and politics each seem to function in absolutely circular ways. The main function of language is the hierarchization of the angelic city-state, whose main activity is communicating and spreading the light of the illuminations. Put sharply: the angelic form of life consists of a series of empty gestures.”

(casas is locating this paradox within a medieval christian theological/scholastic tradition dedicated to hypothesizing about angelic language (locutio angelica) in an attempt to outline the connection between spoken language and voice, and the aristotelian connection between spoken language and political existence. angelology, like much of the minutiae of medieval theology and scholasticism, looks very, very silly until you start poking it.)

(*there is a connection to be made here—i’m not the one to make it, at least not right now—between this image of angelic communication/existence-as-reflected-light, and medieval theories of optics; somebody could look at this in conjunction with, e.g., grosseteste’s de luce.)

Intro

Hi! I'm Flore Picard (any pronouns), I'm a French author and artist and linguist.

Under other names I'm a fanfiction devourer and writer but here I'm going to talk about original writing and art, linguistics, and anything else that catches my fancy outside of fandom. Expect dragons, tall ships, queerness, disability representation and octopuses, probably.

I'm finally opening a blog in my name in honour of my first original short story coming out in an anthology published by @duckprintspress, Aether Beyond the Binary! The story is titled The Light Organ and it's about a magical storytelling organ, a nonbinary musician and a small broken family finding each other and themselves. The kickstarter campaign is open, please go check it out!
