Cover art for the D&D Fanmade manual “Autumn Twilight” by the “Dragonlance Nexus”: a conversion from AD&D to D&D 5th edition of the original game module. Coming soon on DMGuild. This painting was commissioned by the Dragonlance Nexus: a fanart about the very beginning of Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman: Tanis Helf-Elven, Tasslehoff Burrfoot, and Flint are about to return to the Inn of the Last Home in Solace.Of course, the rock under the tree on the right, near Flint, is “that” rock. Fans will know.

“Where’s the kender?” Flint grumbled as they plunged through the forest.
“Tas is meeting us at the lake,” Tanis replied.
“Lake?” Flint’s eyes grew wide in alarm. “What lake?”
“There’s only one lake around here, Flint” Tanis said, trying hard not to smile at Sturm. “Come on. We’d better keep going. His elvensight showed him the broad red outline of Caramon and the slighter red shape of his brother disappearing into the thick woods ahead.
“I thought we were just going lie low in the woods for a while.” Flint shoved his way past Sturm to complain to Tanis.
“We’re going by boat.” Tanis moved forward.
“Nope!” Flint growled. “I’m not getting in any boat!”
“That accident happened ten years ago!” Tanis said, exasperated. “Look, i’ll make Caramon sit still.”
“Absolutely not,” the dwarf said flatly. “No boats. I took a vow.”
–Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman, Dragons of Autumn Twilight
This is such a good bit of writing. We get several pages of hinting that Flint really doesn’t like boats, and then this – nothing specific, just that one time Caramon upset a boat one time and Flint hasn’t gone near one since. Most writers i read today would give the details of what exactly happened, if not go into a full-on flashback, but this book just hints at it. Even if my memory’s right and a later book shows the scene, this is how you want to introduce something like that. It shows their long-standing camaraderie so well.

Tips on How to Write an Original Plot
Tip #1: What does your genre mean to you?
The written word is an expression of the writer, their experiences, their personality, and the like, and when you choose a genre for your novel or piece of work, you have to consider before even making a plot: what does it mean to me and why do I like it so much? And when you figure this out, you can utilize tropes (because, let's be honest, everything is a trope now, and good writers can make these stereotypes very interesting) for that genre to begin crafting your plot and storyline.
Tip #2: What message do you want to relay?
When I was beginning to write my current work, I knew I wanted to make a story about someone struggling through something that very few of their disposition could survive, and being able to make it. And, speaking from reading experience, those themes plucked my heart strings, played me like a fiddle as some would say. In the section, it is very similar to Tip #1, because feeling is so important in literature. Books can influence people's lives, and the messages that come from the heart mean the most.
Tip #3: Character flaws
While this is a different post in general, when making a plot, you have to consider your characters and how their flaws will result in the story moving, which is why it's so much more fun to make characters, your world, and then your plot. For instance, here's a minor thing, but in the first book of the Dragonlance Chronicals, Flint Fireforge in the first book had to overcome his fear of water, and in turn drowning, to help his friends escape from an attacking party of goblins. This not only gives characters depth, but it also remarks how dangerous things can get if things go awry.
Tip #4: You are your worst enemy
Yes, it's corny, even cliché, but it's some of the best advice I can give. You are what's stopping you from stepping out of your comfort zone (and believe me, I know all about that) and making a gem of a story. Just remember, there is no such thing as, "bad," and, "good," stories and books, the only thing they fall under is, "a work of someone's heart," and we all relay that work in different ways.

Quote
"I'll get it for you," Tanis offered, preparing to roll the body over. "No." Tas made a face. "I don't want it back. You can never get rid of the smell, you know." Tanis nodded. Flint fastened his axe in its carrier again, and the three continued on down the path. The lights of Solace grew brighter as darkness deepened. The smell of the wood smoke on the chill night air brought thoughts of food and warmth–and safety. The companions hurried their steps. They did not speak for a long time, each hearing Flint's words echo in his mind: Goblins. In Solace. Finally, however, the irrepressible kender giggled.  "Besides," he said, "that dagger was Flint's."

Unlikely New Friends
This is all going to be bullet points, but I hope people will still enjoy it.
It starts with Tas finding 7 strange little orbs. Their was an evil wizard and other things as well, but they don't really matter here.
Anyway, he pockets them. Into a pouch, forgotten about aside from when he occasionally digs through his pouch.
Here is the thing. Forgetting is not being forgotten. So their inhabitants wait and watch.
Years pass. Tas makes friends, goes on all sorts of adventures. But even the most skilled make mistakes. Even kender luck runs out.
He is wondering what death will be like as a goblin sword swings down. Then there a flash of red light and a strange squirrel is between him and the blade. Another flash.
Swords are great and conducting electricity.
Well, Pachirisu showed herself. Let herself out of her pokeball. They others may as come out too. They were getting bored anyway.
Pachirisu sticks with Tas. They fit. Through war and dragons and time.
(One day there will be a dwarf and a kender and a tree. In the branches of that tree will play an electric rodent who has felled dragons.)
Honedge chooses the warrior woman. They see inside her an ambition and skills to complement theirs.
(It is said the Blue Lady is so skilled her sword doesn't even need her hand to guide it. Lord Soth is perhaps not as surprised as he should be to find he is not the first ghost in Kitiara's service.)
Flint would like to be left out of this, thank you very much. Unfortunately for him, squirtle in no way agrees.
(There is a boat and a splash. There is a sinking dwarf. The bright white light. A larger turtle surfaces, pulling his dwarf along with him.)
Caramon wishes he had gotten the dog. Or the fox or honestly anything but this tiny pink thing. Happiny thinks her new loud trainer is funny but knows he is kind.
(Years later, as he sits and watches his brother burn with fever, Caramon is grateful. So grateful.)
Togepi chooses Tanis as the second least likely to drop him. Tanis takes the egg because no one else wants it.
(Years from now, Togekiss will fly through the sky. He will have a power to rival dragons and a prince to protect.)
Eevee picks Raistlin because he has steady hands and does not rush into fights. Raistlin supposes there are worse companions to have.
(One day, there will be a ghost. Eevee is not a fighter, never has been. But Raistlin has been a good friend to her. And she will keep him. Her fur turns black as her teeth snap. She can't drive him away completely, but Fistandantilus never planned on an umbreon.)
Sturm gets a puppy. Knight have worked with hounds before, even in this one is odd. Houndour chose him for many reasons, none of which are ever known.
(Sturm always wanted to slay a dragon. Houndoom throws himself at reds fearlessly, a shield for his friends. After all, he does not burn.)
How all this changes things is a story too big for me to write. Also, pokemon are stupidly overpowered outside of their own universe so they probably destroy the story completely.

Tasslehoff: In times like these, I really wish I'd listened to what Tanis told me
Flint: What did he tell you?
Tasslehoff: I don't know, I didn't listen
