i think people should talk more about the unique sense of hopelessness which stems from the realization that “help” in the form myth promised you does not exist; there is no help coming and you must create from scratch the tools that will dismantle (or at least diminish) your own suffering, and do this not once but every day for the rest of your life

The only Marvel show I care about is back and I do, regrettably, have Thoughts:
1. I would die for OB
2. I missed Casey
3. I missed B-15
4a. If I see one more person calling Loki x Sylvie a straight ship I will commit a murder, it smells like bi erasure in these goddamn tags
4b. Sylvie is a great character who is once again condemned to the fandom role of “woman gets between a favorite gay ship and is hated for it”, have your ships and headcannons but be chill about it ok???
5. Mobius my love you deserve to ride a jet ski asap
6. Y’all fighting over whether Loki should be with Sylvie or Mobius while I’m in the corner dreaming of a chaotic but tender polycule
7. The number of slutty hair flips from Loki so far has cleared my skin, watered my crops, etc.
8. Everybody is so hot and I’m so bi help
9. “Skin?”

Part four of my series on Rivendell's guards! Wherein I finally talk about why Hrivossa and Celecoll keep getting into arguments. You might want to read parts 1, 2, and 3 first for context.
So we pick up after the siege of Rivendell is broken by Gil-Galad's forces
Among those forces is Hrivossa and her Feanorian faction, who weren't in Eregion when it fell (they were supposed to go as reinforcements later, but never had a chance)
So Hrivossa is very relieved that her lord is alive, obviously, and fully approves of Elrond creating his own little haven in the valley
Anyway then she meets Celecoll
Let me be clear; it is absolute loathing from first sight for those two
Hrivossa is decked out in Feanorian stars, Celecoll is still wearing some old Iathrim armor, they know what they're dealing with, and they're not happy about it
They are both just sensitive enough not to start yelling obscenities at each other in the middle of Rivendell's main courtyard
Especially when Hrivossa finds out that Celecoll has been an impromptu guard for Elrond during the siege (and Celecoll finds out that Hrivossa is normally Elrond's guard)
As far as Hrivossa is concerned, Celecoll is a coward who hid behind the girdle and shamefully ran away when her kingdom needed her most, all while keeping the Silmarils from their rightful owners, and who has no business around Elrond, a good Feanorian lord
As far as Celecoll is concerned, Hrivossa is a remorseless murder who's probably still extremely dangerous, and definitely crass and improper, and who also maybe kept Elrond prisoner(?) and who has no business around Elrond, a good Sindar lord
(Sidenote: a lot of people had issues with Elrond's former jailers basically becoming the basis for his house as a lord but that's another post topic)
I want to be clear both of these people almost immediately made peace with the actual orcs they were now living with and they still hated each other
After a few loud arguments (because a few cups of elvish wine can easily overcome both their abilities to not start yelling at each other) Elrond decides he's had enough and separates them
Alternating schedules where they don't have to see each other, and now they live at opposite ends of the growing city
Problem solved, right?
Wrong!
Celecoll moves next to Hrivossa and they start fighting again
I feel like I should note that half the time they aren't even arguing in the same language
Subjects for discussion include: whether or not Thingol was bad, who the Silmarils rightfully belonged to, and most importantly, who gets to guard Elrond
Can you become a toxic divorced couple without ever being romantically involved? Local elves sure are trying
This cycle repeats several more times before Elrond decides that they clearly, like, need the enrichment from arguing or something
He gets their rooms soundproofed so that their fights don't wake anyone else up and just kind of lets it happen
For some ungodly reason yelling at each other a few times a month actually seems to help both of them be more calm and relaxed the rest of the time
Some things are unknowable, even to the wisest minds, and the reason why they're like this is one of them

Y'know what? In a dying world so cruel and bleak, I think loving is the most powerful thing you can do. In a world where capitalism wants us to break our backs, where peace is scarce, and where some of our brains decide to say mean things to us. It's so important, actually, to be kind and share joy and take care each other, and ourselves, in spite of the way the world is. To love is one of the most rebellious acts one can do

You know what "Male-presenting Time Lord" reminds me of?
"Female-presenting nipples".
In both cases, progressive language is used in a gender essentialist statement. However, the language used inherently rejects gender essentialism - the only reason to say "male/female-PRESENTING" is to stress that the male/female categories are not clear-cut or not applicable/relevant:
The Doctor isn't a man or a women, is both and neither. A woman's nipple is the same as a man's nipple is the same as any other nipple and there is no way to tell them apart by gender.
Thus, in both cases, the statement becomes absolutely RIDICULOUS. In the same sentence you're saying the Doctor isn't a man AND "a man like the Doctor would never let go of power hurr durr". In the same sentence, you are saying that a nipple is the same regardless of the gender of the person it belongs to AND that you are arbitrarily banning one gender of nipple.
You can't just use anti-gender-essentialist language in a gender-essentialist sentence! That won't make your sentence less gender essentialist, it will just make it absolute gibberish!

[DE] musing abt the limits of superficial acab discourse and the way fandom deals with moral discomfort, I guess
“ACAB”, “the only happy ending should be leaving the RCM”, “you’re a terrible person if you draw/write these characters enjoying the sort of corrupt cop stuff that they canonically do in-game” discourse is killing meeee
God forbid you don’t performatively remind everyone that you do hate cops, actually; and god forbid that you don’t find that True Healing and Happiness for Disco Elysium’s characters can only be achieved by leaving the force.
Metas could be written about how Kim and Harry are actually deeply flawed people who enjoy wielding some form of authority in a way that they actually feel best working as cops
(is it healthy? no. is it Good™? no. Is it true to their character? this is where media interpretation comes in)
Metas could be written about how that doesn’t mean ACAB isn’t real, that just means they’re the kind of shitheads (that we, the players, still love) who enjoy being cops
Metas could be written questioning the amount they’d have to change to adapt to a life as civilians, how much and what kind of a push they’d need to go for it,  if it’s change they could even manage, if they could financially survive it, if they could find fulfillment in any other career, at their age
But no. Why waste time on that instead of easy slogans. I mean, we like them, these characters, and we don’t want to feel guilty for liking them, because what does it say about us, then, that we like flawed cops?
(nothing it says nothing it says we played a good nuanced extremely well-written game that skillfully made us like the sort of character whose past actions include sequestering some woman and beating a dude into disability. that’s what it says. i’d even argue that discomfort is part of the point)

Hey, so for the Human Au, how do think Julie would go about her life? Considering her personality in the website, I would think that he takes up different part-time jobs, but mainly likes working at the community center, mainly for the summer/after school programs where they can come up with and host fun activities for the kids!
no yeah that's pretty much what i was thinking! she bounces from job to job - she probably has a roster of seasonal ones that she rotates between. Julie really does seem like an every-gal yk? doing just one thing all the time would be soooo boring
i like the idea of summer / after school programs a lot actually! since canon Julie is big on games and fun, i'm sure she'd be a great choice for those sorts of things. i bet she works a seasonal summer camp in their county!
#also it would be a cute frank-julie bestie thing#cause frank is a university professor#so then julie being in the education system as a camp counselor / school programs person whatever brains not braining rn#I Just Think It Would Be Sweet! and Fitting!#part of me wants to change Frank from university professor to like a uhhh elementary school teacher#but nah. but lets just say the local schools will have field trips and uh. idk a 'bug day'#yk how kindergartens and elementary schools would sometimes have a giant snake brought in or whatever#well i imagine that in this au frank keeps insects as 'pets'#(not pets as in companion animal but. he has a lot of arthropod tanks in his house lol)#so maybe a couple times a year he gets to interact with kids and julie's probably there too!#ohhhh maybe sometimes he'll go to the summer camp for like. education day or whatever#to talk about insects and animal safety or somethn#he's out there with a tarantula chilling on his head...#most of the kids are disinterested but one or two are so Intrigued and its. adorable. anyway this is about julie#rambles from the bog#wh modern human au#i like to think that both julie and barnaby have seasonal jobs at the county fair#it just lasts a few weeks but they have a good time! barnaby can put his clowning degree to Use!#but im having a great time picturing julie coming up with games and stuff and putting it to good use!#i bet she'd be great at finding compromises and solutions to those Schoolyard Problems yk#i said schoolyard problems and flashbacked to the multiple bad injuries at my elementary. & the seizure in hs...#hm. i saw a lot of serious shit. anyhow not the point#i bet julie is that one guy where whenever someone brings up an odd job she's like 'yeah ive done that'#slingin ice cream? catering? florist delivery? doughnut baker? budtender? running bingo night? Yes To It All!#i bet that in a way... howdy is jealous...

The more I listen to political discourse, the more it seems like the disagreements start with what problems people are willing to believe exist.
Like. The 'human trafficking isn't real' folks and the 'racism isn't prevalent in any significant aspect of our society' folks and the 'diseases can't kill you in a way that matters' folks and the 'abortion isn't eugenics' folks and just.
It seems like if you walk up to someone and say, 'hey I have a paper cut, can I get a bandaid' and their response is 'paper can't cut you, paper has never cut anyone ever, here is a statistical analysis about the safety of paper as compared to knives' then that's just not very helpful, is it.
We won't get anywhere until we start believing each other.

In which Lacuna is experiencing the wonder of a new body that doesn't feel like it's dying after five minutes of light exercise but is still easily distracted by her own wandering train of thought:
Lacuna’s run comes to a sudden stop as the realization hits her that she could have been getting the various outfits she’d wished she could wear over the past few years enchanted to fit, and probably even fit flatteringly.  Or even mundanely tailored.  It’s not like she didn’t have the money.
She has just enough time to mutter “Wow, I’m dumb,” to herself before the treadmill running at max speed flings her off and sends her tumbling across the floor of the gym.

I think what's very fascinating to me is that, along with the resounding denial many have that Rauru is a flawed character in his own right, that a new argument is starting to rise; that the main problem with Ganondorf is that he is coded as a person of color. If he was not a person of color, then people would be less inclined to argue on his behalf, people would not paint Rauru, Sonia, or the concept of Hyrule as anything other than good and righteous, and people would finally be able to fully embrace that Ganondorf is the only person with flaws, evil intent, imperialistic tendencies, and is literally the only problem that Hyrule has. This is because the game tells us this much, but because Ganondorf is coded as a person of color, it is problematic.

I really wish s6 had just been better. Because sometimes they did really clever things and it just got lost in the overall badness of the season.
Like Weekend at Bobby's and The Man Who Would Be King are in conversation with each other; bookending the season. Bobby and Cas are essentially having the same problem. They've got a Task that absolutely needs to get done (Bobby's soul and the war in heaven), but they're being pulled in a bunch of different directions and they can't focus on it. Bobby has Rufus and Dean and random police guy on top of his Crowley problems. Cas has missing weapons and Dean and his deal with Crowley on top of his Raphael problems. It's too much to juggle and something is going to drop and shatter.
Only before that happens with Bobby he finally tells Dean what's going on. He reaches out and asks for help and he gets it. Admitting that he couldn't do everything on his own allowed him to find a solution to the problem.
Cas does the exact opposite of that. No one knows the true extent of what he's juggling so no one can really help him. This leads to his friends dying and him losing his human family. (Also Leviathan, but that's s7.) Rachel and Balthazar die. Sam's wall get destroyed. He loses Dean's trust. He stopped Raphael, but the price was high.
Weekend at Bobby's lays out the correct path to take. Lean on your friends for support, ask for help, don't shoulder everything on your own, and you can find solutions to your problems. The Man Who Would Be King shows what happens when you don't do any of that.
They're two episodes that say a lot when taken together. But s6 is such a goddamn mess you pretty much miss it entirely.
