I don't know how much people know about filipino culture, and I admit I am still learning so much, but there is a concept called hiya that I wish wasn't so demonized.
In filipino culture we don't talk back to our parents. There is an idea of family harmony that is super important. Keeping the peace. It was ingrained in me to find ways to keep peace since I was a child. I was performing hiya before I even knew what the word meant.
Hiya can be translated to shame. Basically the idea that you don't do actions to shame your family. You don't air out dirty laundry. You don't do things to embarrass them on purpose. I do admit there are problems in our culture where we enable abuse because we prioritize harmony but not always a positive harmony. We sometimes are asked to internalize discomforts we shouldn't have to to 'keep the peace.'
But there is another concept about the virtue of hiya that I don't think westerners understand. Filipinos at heart are peaceful people. Colonization has damaged us and our culture deeply. But hiya remains. Hiya is putting yourself in the other's shoes to understand. It is empathizing with your enemy to know why they do the things they do. It is understanding we are all human and hurting and growing. Filipinos don't give up on people that easily, and sometimes it's to a detriment to ourselves, but I don't think that's necessarily an evil of our culture.
There are people who hate me on this website but I understand that they are judging me for a tiny sliver of what they see. They don't know who I really am. They see me as an enemy and attack.
But I refuse to attack back. I refuse to participate in lateral aggression and contribute to the cycle of the problem. I will not tolerate abuse, but that doesn't mean I have to become an abuser. I can understand that the people who hate me are hurting and are just trying to protect themselves how they see fit.
I think westerners can learn from filipinos and I think filipinos can be proud of that part of our culture. Yes we should call out the problems with the concept, but I don't think throwing it out is the answer either.

Hello, I'm back from ...wherever I was and I come bearing new artwork and announcements!
I'm in the mists of starting my online shop and these are in the first sticker line up to be sold! I got more designs in the works but I wanted to flex some traditional skills with gouache and I'm real happy with how these turned out.
Stay tuned for more updates.
