i am nearly to the end of season 7 in my rewatch, and i want to tell new fans something that they may not have known about the original run:

we had no idea, until basically the day the finale aired, that there was going to be a season 8. the actors didn't know even while they were filming it.

see, turnaround times for network tv shows used to be MUCH shorter. they would spend usually 8 days shooting, a couple days in editing and post, and then it would air. often they were still editing in the MINUTES before airtime.

gillian anderson did an interview with letterman on the late show (i had to tape it because my mom wouldn't let me stay up to watch!) on like the thursday before Requiem aired saying that she had no idea what was going to happen. they had filmed one ending for if the show would continue, and another if it wouldn't. she said there was "this thing that i say" and if she says it, that would give us our answer. (it was "i'm pregnant" and when i say i DIED... like if i still had my diary from age 13/14 i would scan it for you just so you could see how unhinged i was about this.) (she was completely adorable in this interview and if anyone can find it i would love to watch it again. it was in may 2000.)

fox was in negotiations with the xf team for weeks leading up to the finale. they had no idea if Requiem was going to be a season or SERIES finale. david duchovny didn't want to come back, they didn't know if they could continue without him, they had NO IDEA what the plot for 8 would be if he didn't come back.

(this is why i laugh when fans try to say they planted clues about the ivf arc in s6-7. no they didn't. they did not think that far ahead. i love that you're trying to make this make sense but please don't tie yourselves up in knots about this, because no one else involved did.)

the weeks leading up to the finale were some of the most nail-biting times i have ever experienced in a fandom.

What made the Sherlock finale even more hilarious at the time was that the episode got leaked a few days before - but in German, with no subtitles. And we all thought the BBC had put out some sort of fake leak because it was so insane to watch. So we all waited with baited breath for those going to the private screening if it was the real thing. And it was...But still people were not convinced, even after it aired....

Legend has it that, to this day, you can still find people who whisper that a secret real Sherlock finale is waiting to be revealed at any moment...

I joke a lot about it now but I wish there was a way for fandom history to be remembered. Not the drama or just a list of the popular tropes, but the intercultural stuff. The things you only get from being there, or close enough to it.

Like how in 2016, irondad basically started as a fandom by killing May Parker off and instituting Tony as thee dad of all time, ranging anything from best dad ever or struggling but either way— Tony even after Civil War immediately sees Peter like a son. Or how by 2017, Peter as an avenger or going on a field trip was the most popular thing for him to do, with Flash Thompson being an abusive jerk that beats Peter so much, he was scared of him (and Tony would come to save the day). Like how by 2018, fanon irondad took precedence of over anything, not just the movies but even the comic book history— skip westcott, a character from a PSA comic from the 80s, becoming such a known and understood character that he’s part of the “Spider-Man lore”, but only in so much as it gave Tony a platform to save the day, not Peter. How by 2019, in the scenarios and rewrites of infinity war had taken on a different lens into thousands of fix its after Endgame, ranging from making Peter jealous of Morgan or writing out that little girl entirely. Like how in 2020, quarantine and writing in Peter at marches was an active trend, to the point of cosmic irony.

It’s not just knowing the tropes, but knowing the vibes. The history. The things that now, don’t make any sense or just have different assumptions for what the reader believes to be true. I reread a fic recently and was so struck by the notes which poked fun at the trend of killing May off when you could just coparent, not just because it was funny (and a little disconcerting) to see all the defensiveness of irondad writers in the comments who made their names by killing May/writing the kind of codependency they passed off as found family— but also how it both fit into and deflected against established fanon, not canon. Of course Tony is going to speak Italian and be an active, engaged presence in Peter’s life that not only has lab time, but has dinner with him once a week and asks about his friends. Of course May is a nurse that works long hours that keeps her busy and away— because Tony can “babysit” a 15-year old New Yorker. Of course Peter is a teenager but acts more like a 12-year old in temperament and excitability, speaking like a walking meme.

This particular fic was so radical imo not just because May is 1) alive, 2) active in the plot, and 3) isn’t abusive or dating someone abusive, but because it ALSO presumed things as normal that weren’t common— like Rhodey being Tony’s actual best friend, Pepper being Tony’s fiancé who actually showed up, Peter being friends with MJ and Ned, having a crush on MJ— all things that still aren’t terribly popular in that subset of fandom, but now come with more canonical evidence that supersede the fanon.

I’m not sure if there’s a point to this, maybe this is a thought that should’ve stayed in the drafts. But this kind of fandom lore™️ is too good to let go.

Especially since I know irondad isn’t the only kind of fandom with a shared history that’s changed over time.

Imagine listening to Hook saying "Down with King George" and asking "which one?"

You know, I’ve wondered if Barrie made this purposefully ambiguous, as he often tends to do with Hook’s backstory info. If Hook was indeed Blackbeard’s bosun and lived during the Golden Age of Piracy, he very likely would have only really known about King George I of England. It also totally makes sense for him to say, “Down with King George” if you want to go with the theory that he’s actually related to Charles II (and perhaps possibly was meant to be either James Scott, Duke of Monmouth or James Francis Edward Stuart “The Old Pretender”) because the first “King George” essentially stole the throne from the Stuart line as far as they were concerned. On the other hand, Hook could just as easily be speaking about King George V, who would have been in power during the Darlings’ era. “Hook at Eton” would place him much later and closer to the Darlings’ era… Barrie tells us things about him in the novel and “Hook at Eton” that cannot possibly both be true at the same time. And this just seems to be a fun, sneaky way of him going, “Yeah, Hook could be from either time period. Pick your own headcanon. I’m not going to actually come out and tell you which one is REALLY true.”

What the heck happened with the Byler Script/Scriptgate?

This is probably the last I'm gonna talk about it unless there are more developments because I know we're all sick of it, but here's a rundown for those fortunate to have been off the internet for the last week.

Anyway, the whole saga is basically documented in my ST4 Scripts tag if you want the full context; I posted just about every update he gave as I got them since donating.

8Flix, GoFundMe & Dear Billy

Meet 8Flix, previously considered to be a very legitimate database for film and TV scripts as a reference for screenwriters.

8Flix previously posted all of the S3 scripts as well as some from seasons 1 and 2 and all have been accepted as canon by fandom for some time. Season 3 scripts were even altered after originally posting, thought to be pulled by Netflix to avoid spoilers.

8Flix started a GoFundMe to support the maintenance of the site, and as a reward for donors, promised "production drafts" of the official script for Dear Billy, Papa, and The Piggyback.

Dear Billy was released to a fair bit of hype from the Byler fandom specifically, leading to a surge in donations and a surge in hype for the script releases.

PAPA

The release of the Papa script is delayed by Nick, first from Aug. 1 to Aug. 5, but the script doesn't actually get sent out until Aug. 7.

In the week it took for him to post it, Nick is tweeting to hype up the release and sending vague messages as updates.

Meanwhile, #BylerScript trends on Twitter for about three days, Aug. 5-7. Cast members even acknowledge the hashtag and associated memes.

The script releases on Aug. 7 and the internet immediately goes insane sharing it and analyzing it.

SCRIPTGATE

On Aug. 9, the Stranger Writers twitter posts that any "leaked" scripts are "FAKE" and warn not to pay for scripts. (They don't specifically mention Nick or 8Flix, don't provide proof, and don't offer support for their fans who have been scammed.)

After that announcement, fans start shaming fans who purchased scripts for believing its legitimacy, because it turns out that Nick has been scrubbing his website and GoFundMe updates for any mention of A) scripts being a donation reward or B) s4 scripts being legitimate.

Nick is not authorized to sell scripts, regardless of whether they're real or not - so most of his updates since the Stranger Writers' tweet have been saying that 8flix is a free service and that he's not selling scripts.

Most of the fandom have dismissed the scripts as fake and just assume Nick wrote them himself, but a lot still isn't adding up about why Nick would risk ruining his life, career, and passion project with a fake script.

SO WHAT?

Here's where you can request a refund if you donated.

Here are all the 8Flix scripts because if they're fake then fuck it.

I don't fully believe Netflix or 8Flix at this point and am waiting to see if either make a more official statement about it.

Now the Stranger Writers are gonna post Real snippets on Twitter "once a week" so go vote for the van scene in this poll or Bylers will never recover

🥰🥰🥰🥰 I'm really self conscious about my writing but I'm glad I was sent this. Maybe this will help me get back into writing again.

Starting Over Verse- this will always be a favorite because it was the first fic/verse I've ever done. It's a J2 fic that I never would have written if @j2-are-eternal hadn't been my hyped man through it all.

This one starts off in the early 2000s when J2 first meet and goes on until current ish times. I don't wanna give too much away but this one has the right amount of fluff angst and everything.

From here on out we're getting into what I call bestie fic lol I wrote these as gifts for the bestie @fandom-hoarder because we are hive minded and she's extremely amazing and i love her.

What a father wouldn't do- this one is a pre series fic, do heed the warnings on this one and the others if you or anyone scrolls through them.

This one is pre series, it's got teenchesters, weirdchesters, Sam whump, protective Dean, protective/bamf John. I love it.

Bruised and Broken- READ THE WARNINGS ON THIS ONE!!! It's wincest. It's underage Sam whump, bamf John, hurt Dean, hurt family and it's so Sammy feels. Idk if that makes sense but it does to me lol

Sam and His Techicolor Fingernails- this one is so cute and totally gen. It's pre series Sammy and Dean, it's got supportive big brother Dean, baby brother Sammy who is into nail polish and being his true self. It's cute as hell and one of my favorites.

And last but not least is a samjess fic that was something different because I've never written samjess but me and bestie had thoughts and feelings about Stanford era Sam and this was the end product for her birthday🖤

Anything But Ordinary- Stanford era Sam, samjess. All the away from home adjusting feels, Sam knowing how he doesn't fit in, domestic fluff, lots of feels and I had so much fun writing samjess.

Well aren't you sweet. Not sure about knowledgeable and lovely, but I am quite susceptible to flattery!

Off the top of my head, I can think of 3 fics that have remained key pieces in the fandom since their publication:

Arizona Highways by Fialka Fialka's entire body of work is astonishing, but AH remains not only a staple for the XF fandom, but is widely regarded as one of the classics of fanfiction itself. It made an impressive showing at the 2000 Spooky Awards (fanfic awards within the fandom), winning the outstanding novel, x-file (casefile), angst, Scully characterization, and "other" character categories, and second place for outstanding Mulder characterization.

The story provides a resolution to the Emily arc that both fans and characters were otherwise denied in show canon. It follows Scully, Mulder, and Kresge (from the Christmas Carol/Emily episodes) as they discover that Emily - like the Samanthas and other clones - was but one of a series of children produced from Scully's ova to be test subjects in the wider hybridization conspiracy.

Iolokus by RivkaT and MustangSally A grim alternate universe take on the show's mytharc, this fic is highly controversial due to its bleak takes on Mulder and Scully's characterization, and the horrible things they endure throughout. Clones, rape, human experiments... I must admit that I have not finished this one - it got too dark for me quite early on - but it remains bookmarked for a time I feel ready to get into it.

This fic is both famous and infamous, and has been sparking controversy since its first publication in 1998. Proceed at your own risk.

Incrementum by Lepusarcticus A far more recent entry into the fandom (2017), this work is a series of canon-compliant alternate-universe vignettes which explore what would have happened if Mulder and Scully's romantic and sexual relationship had begun much, much earlier than in canon.

Honorable mention goes to Parabiosis by Penumbra which explores Mulder and Scully's shifting relationship throughout season seven. Penumbra is another author whose entire body of work is worthy of a deep-dive; Fathoms Five is a stunning piece concerning Scully's struggle to understand her own immortality as the world around her marches inexorably onward, and Upsidaisium is a heart-breaking story set in the long grim night of Gethsemane.

Also of note is the series Life During Wartime, a years-long collaboration between four of the fandom's best writers (Maria Nicole, cofax7, finisterre/Marasmus, and Fialka) exploring the colonization apocalypse that never came. Sweet, heart-wrenching, poignant, and fearless.

Do also check out the fics listed under the various categories of the Spooky Awards (linked above) - some are enduring classics, some are great stories that have merely been buried in the sands of time. Many of the fics listed there can be found on Gossamer (one of the few surviving archives from the show's original run and a fandom archaeologist's wet dream) or X-Libris (one person's effort to save older fics and their art from the Wayback Machine in epub and pdf format for posterity and personal use).

Also dig through the XF Book Club's archive on Livejournal for some interesting pieces you can browse by category - and as an added bonus, you can watch fellow fans debate, critique, and generally lose their minds in the comments section!
