The Songcord
Tumblr media
Neteyam × female! Omaticaya! Reader
Some believe waiting is the strongest act of love one could ever do, for time is ever so ungrateful and cruel that it never hesitates to tear longing lovers apart. But when the pain of loss is too much to bear, perhaps one last glimpse at him could mend your broken heart.
Word count: 2.5k
Tags: angst, mentions of blood, mentions of death, soft Neteyam that dislikes killing and all that stuff.
A/n: Hello again! First of all, I'd like to thank you all for supporting the last post I made! I received a couple of requests, and I'll try to get to them as soon as possible! If any of you wish to make a request, I'd be glad to receive it! Anyway, remember reader's name is Zoraya, and also I would recommend you to listen to 'The songcord' by Zoe Saldana while reading this, it's a beautiful song :)
Tumblr media
It had been a while since you last saw Neteyam.
Perhaps such a turn of events was for the best. Not knowing about him, not speaking to him, not touching him, not seeing him, made the whole situation more bearable, if only a little. Yet your mind couldn't help but wander everywhere but on the tasks you had to get done. Wander back to when you would look at him and smile without this pain in your woeful chest, when the two of you would laugh over his pitiful attempt at braiding your hair, when he would carry you around on his back because he knew how much you enjoyed it, back when your heart didn't seem to burn whenever you laid eyes on him.
He used to swear you two would stay together forever. Back in your childhood days, on the most distant memories your tired brain can still fathom, Neteyam often mentioned how he wished to be your loyal knight, like those his father used to tell him about in fairytales. Only the best of knights is suited for a princess such as Zora, he would repeat, before taking your hand and running off towards the forest. And as little time went on, Neteyam pronounced, now with a smidge more of common sense, that, rather, he wished for you to be his bride. For you to be his.
Perhaps neither of you understood the weight of such claims all those years ago, however, you would always answer with an enthusiastic nod, and a big smile on your face.
Since those days you knew you were betrothed to Neteyam. At least you felt like you were, even after he grew up and, little by little, stopped bringing up the idea.
In time, his eyes darkened, tainted and forever stained with burden, with responsibility and a duty that, one day, would abruptly befall onto his shoulders. And his hands –before soft and tender– dripped blood since youth, blood of his enemies, carrying on his palm yet another burden; the burden of murder. Of spilling the blood of those weaker than him, unable to stand against a trained warrior such as himself.
You still remember the first time he killed. A memory ever so vivid that you still carry it within your skin. You awaited his return, expectant, scared, for he always expressed with adamant regret how he wished not to rip out someone's soul out of their body, a brutal, cruel act that, according to him and his soft heart, he never wished to commit unless necessary. Yet he was commanded to do so. And so he did. For he was expected to do it, because he is Neteyam Sully, the firstborn.
That day, he returned to you first –before even reporting to his father– in the middle of the night, crestfallen, regretful, woeful and empty, oh so empty he could only look at you with those dark eyes of lacking color. Covered in blood that wasn't even his.
No words were exchanged that night. He wasn't even able to muster the strength of cleaning himself up, which is why you did, and with a wet, warm cloth, you wished to cleanse both the stain of blood on his skin, and the stain of pain in his heart.
He was always so gentle, so kind hearted and benign, that it hurt your soul to see him so utterly shattered. So delved in his misery, in a weight so heavy upon his back that made him crack.
That cold night, Neteyam held you closer than he ever had, as if you would get snatched from him for eternity. He placed his trembling, bloodstained hands on your waist, clinging to your warmth with such desperation that had you cradling his head on your chest, the sound of your heartbeat being the sole anchor that refrained him from falling apart.
And such encounters continued for a long time, for Neteyam was strong at fights, yet weak at heart. A cursed man, so young yet so haunted. Burdened since birth, condemned since the day he opened his very eyes, all for being a Sully; for being the firstborn.
Thoughts about him swallowed you whole, flooded your brain and drove you mad, mad from love? Who knows. You were losing your mind, that's for sure. Maybe you wouldn't mind such a thing, if at least you had him by your side, if at least you knew he was still alive and well, and if at least you knew how his thoughts had been treating him as of late.
Little more could you do than to cling merely onto a hazy remembrance of him, promising the world to you once he returned.
Once he returned…
Then again… how long has it been…?
The Sully family had been away for more moons than you can count, perhaps even years, and with each passing day, the unbearable pain of getting left behind by your loved one left you dwindling. So much so that the image of Neteyam in your head started fading in time. The thought of forgetting his face terrified you, for it was tied to the idea of permanently losing him; of losing the hope of living the happy life he told you about before he left, a long time ago. It petrified you so much that you found it in yourself to try and draw him, draw what hazy details you remembered of him and of his kind features, to try and at the very least commit him into paper. Perhaps that way… you wouldn't forget. You attempted such portraits many times, yet upon glancing at the finished piece, you just knew something was missing, something was wrong, that is not Neteyam.
And then one day you finally realized. You forgot how he looked. Not only that, but the sound of his voice vanished from your memories. Finally, the only thing left of him you had was the songcord, which he promised would be the beginning of your story together just before leaving you behind.
Time never stopped, and as such, neither did your longing. Everyone knew this yet you were already of age, older, actually, for you were not betrothed out of respect to your decision and Neteyam's of waiting for his return to become his mate.
To your dismay, such an event never transpired, so you were soon to be betrothed to a good male of the tribe. A kind na'vi who knew beforehand that your heart already belonged elsewhere, in the hands of another man, despite the time that passed.
Yes. You hadn't seen Neteyam in a while. In years. Which perhaps made your betrothal more bearable. Yet, even then, you couldn't stop thinking about him. You started to believe you never could.
And one day, the sound of a foreign Ikran was heard.
"Zoraya!" A young girl approached you frantically and out of breath, tugging desperately at your hand with an unreadable expression on her face. "In the village, the Sullys, they…!" Your eyes widened. "They have returned!"
You left out an exasperated breath, feeling your heart quickly grow mad upon the news. Your chest started feeling terribly tight, as if concealed within iron claws, so much so that it felt as if you couldn't breathe properly.
Neteyam… he… he is back…!
You dropped the basket full of fruit you held without hesitation, to proceed to run desperately towards the village with little concern of your surroundings and without care of the cut and scratches you acquired while sprinting hectically through the forest.
Neteyam… Neteyam came back to me…!
Just the thought had you increasing your speed, ignoring the fleeting pain of wounds, disregarding whatever it was that got in your path.
I want to see him…!
Upon your arrival, you quickly made your way through the crowd, squeezing between the people surrounding the family that just arrived, and letting out quick apologies to try and reach them. Reach him.
Neteyam… finally, I can tell you one more time…
You locked eyes with Neytiri.
How much I love you…!
She looked at you with misery.
Your smile quickly vanished.
The whole family was silent, staring at you with narrow eyes, gazes so pitiful that had you taking a step back, embracing yourself in nervousness.
You couldn't see Neteyam.
"Where is Neteyam?" Your voice wavered, dwindling under sad gazes and the cruel realization that he was not there.
Jake appeared crestfallen, unable to look at you in the eye once more; unable to bear your helpless expression which still tried to seek out his son.
A son that was no more.
Neytiri was the one to look at you, strong face yet weak heart –just like her son– as she locked eyes with you. She choked on her words, obvious rage and sorrow coming out of her expression.
She could only shake her head at you in regret.
Your heart shattered.
A pain like none you've ever felt in your chest got you falling expressionless to the ground, water pooling in your eyes as you grabbed your heart in misery, clinging to the songcord he gave you as you felt your heart get ripped out of your chest.
You couldn't remember more from that day. Memories faded, yet pain lived vivid within you.
You felt empty, even if he left a long time ago and you knew nothing about him, it felt as though a part of you was violently ripped out of you along with his departure.
You often wandered off alone to the spirit tree. It made you feel close to him, even though death cruelly interfered. He finally went to a place you couldn't reach, a realm so far that your feet could never touch, not as long as your lungs drew air. He left, and this time, you couldn't follow.
The tree of voices felt quiet. Awfully quiet and dreadful, as if sensing your loss and the pain dwelling in your chest.
You sat down, taking deep breaths, trying to remain calm. You couldn't stop thinking about him; your mind, stained with love, would not let you rest, would not let you go a moment without wishing to see him one last time, to finally mutter what remained untold, to tell him how much love you harbored for him ever since you were kids.
You closed your eyes, feeling the wind envelop you in its cold embrace, a surge of emotions flowing through your body and a sense of vertigo coursing through your flesh.
And then you opened your eyes.
And he was in front of you.
You were no longer under the spirit tree, rather, it seemed you were between his arms, a wet, warm cloth in your hand, while he gently placed his hand on your waist.
You still remembered that night, the night he seeked you out, covered in blood. The night he murdered for the first time.
You left out a choked sigh, looking down at him, being met with his head, gently placed on your chest.
The both of you shared a burning warmth, sitting on the floor, with you sitting on top of him, seeking the contact of skin so fervently it hurt.
Your sight wavered upon meeting his form, a striking sadness making your eyes wet with tears. You could feel him, finally, after all this time, the longing within your chest felt less heavy, yet the sense of not being able to see him again lurked deep in your head.
He held you close, strong arms surrounding you with ease, as his big palms caressed your waist with care.
"Neteyam…" you cried out in a whisper, your voice heavy with pain, which had him looking up at you, at your hurt expression.
And then you saw him, his face, and it was as if your memory never forgot about him in the slightest. You placed both hands on his cheeks, smiling weakly through your tears at him and his concerned features.
He was still as handsome as you remembered.
And he was there. He was with you, and you could feel his warmth, feel his skin against yours and, this time, it was not a distant dream.
"Why are you crying…?" He spoke so softly, so tenderly and loving and it made you shatter, realizing how deeply you missed his voice. He removed his hands from your waist, placing them below your eyes to wipe your tears with his thumb, as he worriedly scanned your face for answers.
"I'm just happy to see you." You said, unable to stop the relentless tears from falling off your face, as with your palms you held his cheeks, trying to get this last moment with him ingrained in your brain.
You would never allow yourself to forget. Not again.
"I'm happy to see you too." He said, weakly smiling at you as his forehead connected with yours.
You embraced him like you never had before, knowing this would be the last time you were ever permitted to do so, placing your head in the crook of his neck as he protectively hugged you with the same intensity.
"Neteyam?" Your voice was worn out, tired, as with your hands you clung to his back, wishing to stay inside this memory for as long as possible. He merely hummed questioningly at the call of his name, and you sighed with delight upon realizing that, finally, you could say what you wished to confess ever since he departed. "I think I'm in love with you." You faced him, a sad smile on your face. "I'm terrible, am I not?" You laughed, further attempts to wipe your tears remaining fruitless.
He looked at you tenderly, his dark eyes regaining the color they lacked, shining under your gaze.
"Hardly," He mumbled, kissing your eyes, soft lips upon your eyelids. It all felt so terribly real it made your heart stirr. "I feel the same." He all but whispered those words, and you felt your world regain a little color. "You just said it before I could." You furrowed your brows in sorrow. He loved you as well, yet a timeless force separated you both in such a cruel way, that fate would never let you stay by his side.
You sobbed at the thought, and, once more, Neteyam grabbed your cheeks between his palms in an attempt to understand the cause of your sorrow.
"Why do you cry still, my love? I'm right here. Right by your side." He exclaimed with sageness, as water flowed down your cheeks, staining his hands with your tears. You could never achieve a shared future with the man you love, he would slide from between your fingers ever so gently, and you would get left behind once more. "I'll never leave your side, yeah? I'll stay for as long as you wish. So please, don't shed tears for me."
You could only nod, clinging to him in desperation, as you felt him vanish from between your grasp. You tried to maniacally hang onto his memory, but before you knew it, he was gone. He was not by your side anymore.
You were left alone with your thoughts again.
A pained chuckle escaped your lips.
He lied.

Zoe Saldana stars in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3"SOURCE: MARVEL
That’s not to say Marvel — along with all studios and streamers — doesn’t face some hurdles going forward. But the nature of those obstacles for Marvel are frankly pretty obvious; it’s mostly things Marvel has overcome before; and regardless of those issues and the need to address them, Marvel is still actually doing pretty good right now even amid the problems they’ve had.
So let’s just unpack what’s really going wrong, and what it means for Marvel Studios.
The situation with actor Jonathan Majors — the star of several Marvel films and streaming shows, as the MCU’s time-traveling villain Kang the Conqueror — is that he faces multiple accusations of abuse, and is scheduled to stand trial for one recent case. After that case was initially reported, other accusations surfaced, as did previous public statements from years ago by performers who asserted accusations of abuse were already circulating about Majors.
So yes, Marvel will almost certainly recast Kang. Lucky for Marvel, the character literally exists across a near-infinite number of alternate realities where he takes different forms and changes appearance. Likewise, Marvel has had to recast characters in the past, just like lots of other franchise or TV/streaming series. This isn’t brain surgery, and the framing of this issue as something that could sink Marvel’s whole future plans is frankly nonsense.
Just one great example, Marvel could offer the role to John Boyega (who I’d argue should’ve been the top candidate for the role in the first place). Or maybe Denzel Washington as an iteration of Kang who sat out the in-fighting and collective efforts of the rest of the Kangs and grew older and wiser as he made his plans to take over. Or maybe Ray Fisher could be offered the role, if Marvel wants to poke DC and WBD while scoring a great casting option.

Or perhaps Marvel could offer the role to Leslie Odom Jr., Lakeith Stanfield, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Daveed Diggs, Stephan James, or any number of other fantastic casting choices to take over the role of Kang in the MCU.

The point is, the worst part of the situation with John Majors is if the allegations are true and women suffered this abuse while Hollywood ignored it. The casting “problem” is small potatoes by comparison, and is easy to solve.
So let’s look at the financials now, since a central claim to the “Marvel is in trouble” narrative is that the studio is struggling at the box office while streaming is an unpopular mess.
At the box office, it’s true Marvel hit a high point with their back to back releases of the two-part Avengers conclusion to the Infinity Saga. The $2.79 billion from Endgame and $2 billion from Infinity War elevated the final global gross for all 22 films in that saga to more than $20 billion, for a per-film average of around $935 million.
In 2018 and 2019, the MCU put up the following numbers: Black Panther hit $1.34 billion, then Infinity War topped $2 billion, then Captain Marvel scored $1.1 billion, and then Endgame took $2.79 billion. Ant-Man and the Wasp at $622 is the only MCU film in those 24 months that failed to top $1 billion.
Since the Infinity Saga ended, Marvel’s releases have taken north of $8.1 billion across 10 movies so far, with a Multiverse Saga per film average of about $815 million. The difference between $815 million and $935 million is not insignificant, but nor is it disastrous, and it’s certainly not hard to understand why it’s happening.
The 2018 and 2019 slates for the Infinity Saga benefited from a decade of build-up, and it was those last four (out of five total) blockbusters topping $1-2 billion each that provided the final heft and resulted in an even higher per film average. We are only in the first half of the Multiverse Saga to date, and so far we haven’t had a single Avengers movie in this new saga, while as noted the Infinity Saga ended with a one-two Avengers punch good for more than $2 million per film.
And then the fact of the Covid pandemic alone accounts for most of the rest of the downturn in Marvel Studios’ average box office performance. Even during the Covid pandemic, when films were flopping or going straight to streaming/PVOD, Marvel’s three releases that performed “badly” due to the global health crisis still managed to finish between $379.7 million on the lowest end and $432 million. That’s better than the DCEU can perform even after theaters reopened and box office started its climb back toward something resembling “normal” — at least for the right films, since 2023 has been a roller coaster ride for theatrical.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania underperformed earlier this year and wound up the weakest performer of that franchise at $476 million, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 scored blockbuster results with $845.5 million.
Indeed, Vol. 3 is currently the fourth-highest grossing movie of 2023, both domestically and worldwide. And for the record, as disappointing as its box office was, 2023 has been so cruel to theatrical releases that Quantumania is still a top-10 box office performer.
We’ve seen one would-be blockbuster tentpole after another face-plant or otherwise disappoint, and often when a tentpole has managed a healthy box office performance it’s at a more moderate level than expected or typically enjoyed by the given franchise and/or its prior financial trajectory.
Other than Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Oppenheimer, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, nothing else truly put up top-tier results this year. Fast X topped $700 million, but is fourth film in a row from the series to suffer a decline from its predecessor’s box office gross, and the lowest box office for the franchise since 2011’s Fast Five, so it’s a mixed bag there.
Besides that, 2023 saw three films in the $500-600 millions range, four in $400 millions territory, and a couple of $300 millions.
The makeup of the top 10 this year looks like this: Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Oppenheimer, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Fast X, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Little Mermaid, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, Elemental, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Notice, there are three Marvel superhero movies in the top 10. Yes, one of them underperformed, but the point is that it seems silly to talk as if audience are in any widespread or large scale way turning away from superhero cinema, or that Marvel is somehow reeling from a downfall and have lost control.
The Marvels is currently tracking toward a shockingly low debut this weekend, with most projections pointing to a $130-$150 million global opening. Without at least average holds, the film could struggle to get past $300-400 million. On the other hand, I think tracking has proven pretty unreliable these days, and I believe a significant part of these disappointing numbers is the fact a lot of people are confusing this film with being another new Disney+ Marvel show, or think it is coming to Disney+ as a film soon. There’s also the general 2023 ongoing curse to consider.
But regardless, The Marvels should’ve been a home run sequel. While we can point to the unethical shenanigans and toxic behavior of fans and of certain organized hateful online voices obsessed with attacking women-driven movies or shows, if this film flops or underperforms rather than merely suffering a downward adjustment consistent with the genre overall (which would mean a box office for The Marvels in the $700 million range, I’d say), then it’s entirely fair to call it a big stumble for the studio.
The large-scale tainting of superhero cinema by the DCEU’s overarching failure the past several years (eight films in a row across five years, all failing to reach $400 million and averaging in the roughly $250 million range) coinciding with the Covid pandemic and theatrical downturn, coupled with a leveling off — not uncontrolled free-fall or any other hyperbolic situation — of Marvel’s must-see “event” status in the aftermath of their 11-year Infinity Saga’s conclusion (and lack of any Avengers team-ups for four years and counting) has no doubt reduced the dominance of the superhero genre and audience’s previous high-level anticipation.
But that sort of heightened “event” status is impossible for any franchise or genre to maintain, and no serious person expected the genre or any one studio’s piece of it to be some perpetual ever-increasing profit machine
Neither Marvel nor the genre in general need to treat the usual ebb and flow of primacy in entertainment as if it’s some major crisis threatening the existence and profitability of the studio or genre. That’s just the natural clickbait mentality driving entertainment journalism. We should be able to report on and assess such situations without resort to exaggerated portrayals for melodramatic purposes, nor parrot claims from those with obvious incentives and ulterior motives behind any of that sort of hyperbolic claims. We know better, but that doesn’t mean the profession behaves better, and so we get clickbait and studio drama delivered up like silly reality TV, and everyone pretends not to recognize it as the nonsense it usually is.
Marvel has to recast a major lead actor, something we’ve seen plenty of times by studios and projects, including literally by Marvel themselves on more than one occasion. Marvel’s first two films of 2023 grossed a combined $1.3 billion in box office. Even if The Marvels only does about half the box office of Captain Marvel — a vastly bigger drop than the Ant-Man franchise experienced, but let’s just use a 50% dramatic decrease to make the larger point — the MCU will have grossed a total of about $2.45 billion for 2023, an average of $815 million per film.
If that figure sounds familiar, it’s because I mentioned it earlier since it’s the per-film average for the MCU ever since the end of the Infinity Saga. Marvel settled back a bit from the high per-film average of $935 million, and for four years we’ve consistently seen this same new average level of performance for their films. Again, not insignificant as a drop, but in context it’s easier to understand and recognize as not a sudden emergency situation, and I suspect most studios would be happy if they could average north of $800 million per film on average every year.
And let’s face it, once the latest Avengers movies hit the radar, we’ll see the average per film gross go up during those years, just like always, and in the long run if the two scheduled Avengers movies play at the $2 billion level, that will actually result in an increase in the final average per-film gross for the Multiverse Saga, just as those huge Avengers box office grosses at the end of Infinity Saga seriously raised the saga’s per-film average.
This is all fairly predictable, within an obvious margin of error but not frankly too far of deviation. Which doesn’t negate the fact of the downturn in average performances, but rather puts it into less histrionic perspective as solvable problems for a still overwhelmingly successful studio that’s seeing per film averages still far superior to what any other studio can claim.
On streaming, where audience trends and preferences have likewise evolved during the Covid era, Marvel
First we got the ABC broadcast series: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, and Inhumans. Want to take a moment to recall how did those all fair with audiences and critics?
Then came Netflix's slate, with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher — half of those got mostly good or great reviews, a couple got mixed to negative reviews, and along the way different seasons of a given show had their ups and downs. Many fans and reviewers bemoaned the general lack of tie-in to the cinematic releases, a point that's amusing in light of how the same reviewers and fans completely reversed course a few years later to bemoan the fact the newer MCU shows often try to tie in to the MCU.
So next up are The Runaways and Cloak and Dagger, shows with younger casts and less direct connection to the rest of the MCU, but both were short lived and appeared on two different streaming services.
Which brings us to the MCU shows on Disney+, overseen by Marvel Studios itself and consisting of WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If...?, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Secret Invasion.
While The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and What If...? received mixed reactions, WandaVision and Loki got generally good to great reviews, as did Hawkeye and Moon Knight.
Ms. Marvel likewise received strong positive reviews, aside from resentful fans mostly motivated by racism or sexism who bashed the show (the same way angry bigoted fans harassed Brie Larson and tried to manipulate online reviews for Captain Marvel, and to this day engage in bizarre conspiracy theories pretending movies with women leads are secretly propped up by studios buying up tickets), and the same mob of boys and men perpetually upset that everything isn’t just a mirror reflecting themselves were incensed that She-Hulk dared make fun of them for being immature, bigoted, and all-around goofy.
Granted, She-Hulk did often have what looked like rushed and unfinished CGI, but it was also still miles ahead of most TV CGI and it didn’t detract from the entertainment value of the show and was generally fine. (Yes, plenty of folks just didn’t enjoy these shows, and I’m sure it’s entirely a coincidence that for many of them it always happens to be women-led shows that bother them or are declared “meh”).
Secret Wars is the most recent new MCU show (besides a new season of Loki), and it got mixed reviews that lean mostly positive but still point to trouble in the decision-making to develop the series, questions about
The point of all of this is, Marvel’s had a lot of superhero shows for a long time during the reign of the MCU, and the shows have tended to mostly get good or great reviews, while often suffering complaints of inconsistency in tie-ins vs stand-alone abilities, or iffy VFX, or questions about who is in charge and why certain decisions were made. Sound familiar? It should, because it’s a broken record of reality at this point, the sort that gets mentioned as if it’s a new development any time someone is pushing the latest version of the “sky is falling” narrative.
Not that there aren’t issues needing solutions. The budgets are too high, and Marvel — like many streamers — is discovering it’s simply not sustainable to spend $20 million or more per episode with rushed production schedules and increasingly unreasonable demands on VFX workers.
But the shows themselves are so far working and working pretty well, if you aren’t focused entirely on social media debates and media exaggerations. Most every MCU show on Disney+ has enjoyed positive reception from critics and viewers, enjoying good (and sometimes record-setting) viewership. Fixing the problems for the Marvel streaming plans is not really any more difficult than fixing the theatrical issues, because it’s easy to identify the problems, easy to see where the problems arose, and easy to see what is necessary to end those problems.
Nobody foresaw the Covid pandemic (or at least the extent of it) or the utterly shameful, failed public health response it elicited from governments and organizations that are paid and entrusted to prevent or deal with such crises. Marvel was caught off guard like every studio, Marvel suffered the same box office downturn as every studio, Marvel leaned into streaming like every studio, and Marvel is now having to make adjustments to adapt to the still-evolving environment theatrically and in streaming.
So media and fans and others in Hollywood pretending this is some shocking, Marvel-specific situation are making disingenuous claims, and they should know better. Most probably do, but the truth is more boring than doomsaying — and with everything else in the world falling apart, clickbait and hyperbole are the best way to get attention for entertainment news during a drought (caused by few new films/shows releasing, and the likelihood of strikes dragging into next year because studios put money toward bonuses, yachts, and private jets rather than pay artists, writers, and performers living wages from a fair share of the revenue they generate).
Marvel will recast Kang, they’ll reduce the number of shows and films in production at a given time, they’ll get budgets under control and allow more time for VFX work, and they’ll refocus on the approaches and measures that worked so well in the past to determine which projects to greenlight and how to return to the sense of a big shared world the Avengers have to team up to save.
Luckily, with the X-Men and Fantastic Four reboots around the corner, Marvel has a couple of big teams with lots of potential for precisely the sort of storytelling Marvel does best at the blockbuster level. They could even simply move toward a post-Secret Wars setup that lets Fantastic Four, X-Men, and a handful of other existing popular franchises carry the Marvel brand forward for a while.
We will also probably see the temporary return of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson reprise their popular MCU roles for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and/or Avengers: Secret Wars.
And looking at the upcoming slate, it’s not hard to see there’s plenty of reason to feel confident Marvel will continue to enjoy success, even if it’s at a slightly moderated level due to the myriad factors we’ve discussed, including the idea that superhero genre films are settling into a more consistent long-term level of popularity and performance from now on.
The next four years brings Deadpool 3, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, Blade, Fantastic Four, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars, and at some point thereafter Armor Wars and the X-Men. Of these films, the two Avengers movies are likely to be blockbuster hits, as is Deadpool 3. Captain America: Brave New World is an established franchise, lacking the original series lead but with a continuing cast and brand that I think are enough to avoid any significant downturn in box office, even if we see some drop from the peak levels of the Infinity Saga.
Blade and Thunderbolts are the riskier properties here, but the former is a previously successful cinematic brand and the latter is a team-up movie including some recognizable characters and stars. Still, this is where we might see more underperformances. Fantastic Four could likewise either perform at a blockbuster levels, or might wind up in the $700 million range, but as a key property getting lots of attention and must-work oversight, I think it’ll avoid being a problem.
Armor Wars as an extension of the Iron Man movies — and possibly/probably coming after we see Robert Downey Jr. again in some Avengers action — should perform well, and X-Men is a known successful brand getting an MCU reboot and polish as a big team franchise including younger cast members, so I think it’ll at least be capable of playing at the Guardians of the Galaxy level, if done right.
This isn’t a debacle, it’s not doomsday, and Marvel isn’t in disarray. The internal difficulties they’ve faced are frankly typical and easy to identify and solve, as much as everything else we’ve discussed here. The bottom line is this: we’ve seen Marvel Studios kick off with a big hit in Iron Man and an outright flop with The Incredible Hulk, after which Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor performed at okay levels but didn’t set the box office on fire by any stretch.
We got the original Avengers movie off the strength of Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and to really help put this into perspective I’ll point out the average per film box office of Phase One was $634 million. Phase Two’s per film average was $876 million.
Marvel worked hard to build what they created, and it’s a tremendous historic success full of ups and downs that so far have ultimately maintained an impressive level of successful across a large slate of films and series. To look at this history, this math, and think Marvel Studios is in deep trouble, struggling, or never really was very good to begin with, is unreasonable and contrary to the data and any serious considerations.

Avatar Films Have Always Been A Gross Reimagining Of Colonialism
Tumblr media
After 13 years, the sequel to Avatar(2009) has finally arrived. The original science fiction epic, written and directed by James Cameron, broke multiple box office records in its theatrical run and became the highest-grossing film of all time for a decade. Many will remember accompanying their families to sold-out theatres mere days before Christmas for a film that employed the use of groundbreaking technology which would change the art of filmmaking forever. However, Avatar (and its sequel Avatar: The Way Of The Water), is in fact a problematic analogy of indigenous oppression.
To recap, Avatar follows disabled ex-marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) as he learns the ways of the Omaticaya clan of the Na’vi people in an avatar body that looks and functions just like theirs. Along with their culture, he falls in love with one of the Na’vi, a fierce warrior named Neytiri (From Scratch’s Zoe Saldana), and switches sides against the humans, subsequently leading the Omaticaya people in their war against Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and the Resources Development Association (RDA).
Many will remember the blue alien species facing adversity, but not many will remember (or have even noticed) that the central conflict in Avatar is an allegory for colonialism. An ignorant, aggressive, money-hungry corporation supported by military enforcement wishes to destroy the sacred homeland of indigenous communities in order to obtain valuable resources — sounds a little familiar to me. In fact, James Cameron has admitted that Avatar is based on the colonisation of Native Americans. In court documents from a 2015 plagiarism case where visual effects artist Gerald Morawski claims Cameron stole the idea from him, Cameron produced a sworn declaration detailing how he came up with the idea for the film. “Avatar is a science fiction retelling of the history of North and South America in the early colonial period,” read the statement. “Avatar very pointedly made reference to the colonial period in the Americas, with all its conflict and bloodshed between the military aggressors from Europe and the indigenous peoples. Europe equals Earth. The native Americans are the Na’vi. It’s not meant to be subtle.”
Indeed, Quaritch and the RDA are very obvious symbols of colonial whiteness; they even use a slew of derogatory, colonial verbiage, referring to the Na’vi as “savages” on multiple occasions. Sadly, this focal conflict follows into the sequel, with previously deceased Colonel Quaritch returning as the story’s villain via an avatar body that had all his memories stored in the event of his death. This time, he has one mission: getting revenge on Jake Sully. Colonel Quaritch is now even more bloodthirsty and dangerous, eager to destroy Jake and his new family, and he is willing to go as far as becoming the very beings he hates the most in order to exact vengeance. With the RDA and their weapons backing him, Quaritch lays waste to several Na’vi communities, burning down their homes and killing them in cold blood.
“The truth is, reimagining colonial violence and the suffering of indigenous people through the eyes of an alien species isn’t the epic story Cameron thinks it is.”
Indigenous people have taken issue with the themes in Avatar for years, but it’s only now with the increasing visibility of social media that there is a wider platform for them to share their opinions and continue a discourse about the problematic nature of this story. Now that indigenous people are being heard, some are calling for a boycott of the film’s highly anticipated sequel.
Much of the recent criticisms got louder following the resurfacing of a 2010 article by the Guardian that details the involvement of Cameron and Avatar’s Sigourney Weaver and Joel Moore in the Brazilian Xingu peoples’ campaign against the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam project. Acknowledging that the Avatar had created “a bit of a spotlight on [them] right now to raise awareness in certain key areas”, Cameron expressed his desire to make a 3D “experiential” documentary on the Xingu’s battle.
After watching indigenous ceremonies and meetings Cameron made extremely disparaging comments about the Lakota. “I felt like I was 130 years back in time watching what the Lakota Sioux might have been saying at a point when they were being pushed and they were being killed and they were being asked to displace and they were being given some form of compensation,” said Cameron. “This was a driving force for me in the writing of Avatar – I couldn't help but think that if [the Lakota Sioux] had had a time-window and they could see the future… and they could see their kids committing suicide at the highest suicide rates in the nation… because they were hopeless and they were a dead-end society – which is what is happening now – they would have fought a lot harder.”
Cameron has since addressed the subsequent accusations of racism in a UNILAD article, noting that he wanted to “listen and to be sensitive to issues that people have.” However, Cameron has not apologised directly to the Lakota people for his degrading comments.
Simply acknowledging people's feelings as “valid” is not enough. The truth is, reimagining colonial violence and the suffering of indigenous people through the eyes of an alien species isn’t the epic story Cameron thinks it is. It’s an appropriative and tasteless virtue-signalling of a traumatic issue that still affects millions of native people today.
Despite Cameron claiming that he wishes to move away from the white saviour trope, the backstory of Avatar’s central white character says otherwise. By positioning Jake as the Na’vi’s saviour, the film’s “fuck white people” metanarrative conveniently disavows whiteness as inherently bad. Even in Avatar: The Way of Water, despite bringing even more death and destruction to the beautiful land of the indigenous Metkayina tribe who provide a safe haven for his family, Jake pretty much remains the hero of the story.
This representation of Jake as one of the “good” whites implores people to view whiteness as an institution and a system, rather than individuals who can be complicit in a system of violence and oppression. In doing this, Cameron suggests that sometimes, whiteness can save us. It feels like some weird colonial wet dream that appoints certain well-meaning white people as the saviours of native people in the perpetual struggle against other white people. Both Avatar films’ metanarratives are framed as counter-hegemonic, but they ultimately end up reproducing hegemony by positioning white people as heroes — thus supporting and legitimising white supremacy.
The franchise props up whiteness as something special and unique that enrichens and sets you apart from everyone else. In Avatar: The Way of Water, Jake and Neytiri’s kids are seen as outcasts, similar to Jake, because they were born with five fingers like humans instead of four like other indigenous Na’vi. Because of this, they are teased by other Na’vi. However, throughout the course of the film, the Sully kids are revealed to have special abilities; Kiri (Weaver) the daughter of the late Grace Augustine’s (also Weaver) avatar body, has a particularly special connection with Ewya, the Na’vi’s omniscient deity. It’s interesting that in both films, the characters that are connected to whiteness (apart from the RDA) are treated as different and special among the indigenous communities they make a home in.
Ultimately, colonialism is a real-life monster that has and continues to affect indigenous people globally for generations. Though the story of Avatar is fictional; its themes aren’t, and it’s imperative that we think critically about the on-screen representation of certain issues and groups because the media largely informs our understanding of the subjects depicted. It also informs our application of these issues — from individual to collective praxis. It’s even more important when you consider the global visibility of this film.
James Cameron most likely thought that this film would implore pro-colonialists and Western imperials to think about their empire’s history differently. But if he really wanted to fight for the rights of indigenous people, he could have directly provided aid, reparations, or any kind of tangible support to these communities instead of producing a multi-billion dollar franchise that emblematizes their trauma. His net worth is literally $700 million. But do the people whose struggle inspired filmmakers like Cameron and line his millionaire pockets see even a cent of those profits? No. Of course not.
It’s true: Western colonialism begets a debt that cannot ever be repaid. But white Westerners, at the very least, can make a start — and putting a spin on indigenous trauma for profit isn’t it.

Gentle Anon here! I saw your face claim for Quoren! I honestly love Oscar Isaac and found it funny since Quoren’s descendant, Oberyn, is played by Pedro Pascal (Oscar and Pedro are friends).
For Quoren’s wife, maybe Zoe Saldana or Rosario Dawson?!
Lol, I know right - I thought it'd be fitting to have Oscar as Pedro's ancestor in this fanfic world. I love the idea of Zoe Saldana or Rosario Dawson too! A previous anon mentioned Salma Hayek or Eva Green I believe; these are all such good ideas! I do wonder if George Martin is ever going to give us an actual name for Qoren Martell's wife, and maybe some idea as to where in Dorne she comes from; there's a lot of variation in Dorne and it'd be nice to stay as true to the text as possible!

CHAPTER 1. MA'ITAN
CHAPTER 2 : RETURN OF A GHOST, HIS DREAMS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
that fateful day on pandora, the baby boy was sought out by the young navi woman has become the talk and whisper among the humans and village.
hearing the story from herself of how the seed from the tree of souls led her towards the young boy, abandoned by his parents during the war, created conflict among them of letting her take in a human child of the very demon that caused pain and destruction. but her mother, mo'at, confirmed the story that the human baby is hers.
with confirmation, the navi didn't question anymore as their great mother has spoken about the child's fate. one is clearly not on board with the baby being one of them when not being born navi, her older sister neytiri.
to ingyen, this boy was her everything she could ever pray for. in her first few days with her baby, she immediately organized beads of variety for a special song cord and thought of a melody suited for him.
this was the first time the navi woman had smiled in such a long time since the sky people came. she has watched young mothers prepare the birth of their children including neytiri when she birthed neteyam and took in kiri, making song cords of their beginnings to remember each milestone. the glow of motherhood overflowed each and every navi woman except ingyen.
she had to face the fact she wouldn't move on and get her own little family. watching from a far as a desiring moment that was impossible to the real experience.
she didn't care how her sister held anger for her son from the actions of his deceased father. constantly asking the scientist, a friend of toruk makto, norm about human babies as they call it at their planet.
during her first days, she didn't hesitate to collaborate with the humans. whatever they advised her on how to hold a baby and feed him a bottle is something she never expected such difference between them.
thus she began his song and crafted his song cord of this moment.
welcome, seykxel
i bring you to the family
i experience the light
a miracle arrives, a birth that comes within me
great joy that is in the heart
great joy that is in the heart of the people
we thank you
for the nights of life
we thank you
for the days of life
i thank the great mother for your birth
for i am yours and you are mine
o eywa, o eywa
the first bead eywa guided her to him and his birth.
the second is claiming him as her son, gifting him a name of that their people will remember when he grows in a wonderful man.
the third is his announcement to her people. it was a grand ceremony taken a few days later.
and so on and so forth for the days to come to add to his cord. ingyen can't hold in her excitement for what he'll experience and watch his song cord grow.
ingyen hopes for her boy to have a long, lasting life even when he passes first before her.
one year old spider
her baby was growing. with all the nutrients and care she has put in for him, she learns new things of what humans did back on earth. ingyen visited the scientists frequently if any other results that can impact him later.
if any fruit, teylu, meats and any sort of medicine would harm the boy in his body. she asked to be tested if she can breast feed normally for him not to consume such things from a weird bottle.
some came out fine but others weren't possible for the baby to be able to consume.
spider's little blonde curls grew in which gave her ideas on what style he'd take on. his soft, blue eyes staring anything that catches his eyes. spider started to swing his arms and legs around when he was excited. he had the cutest little laugh that pulled the heart strings of his mother as she tickled him gently and blows on his tummy.
she told stories of when she grew up in the forest where he'll soon be with his momma. stories about his grandfather and who he was. the ways of the omatikaya. the story of the mighty toruk makto that lead the clans to victory against sky people.
teaching him na'vi at a young age is such an experience for the scientist to witness when she helps him pronounce certain objects or animals with the help of pictures. but to ingyen, it was mandatory because her son is omatikaya and their language comes first through visual learning with babies.
everytime someone tries taking her son to play and has a little lively experience, ingyen becomes protective and max would tease her but she hiss at him and takes her baby. she loves to add her little ma'itan, my son.
norm and max have felt more at ease that the young woman has a less threatening glare thrown their way since she was wary and reluctant on receiving help from them.
the baby impacted her attitude.
three year old spider
the kid learned how to walk and ran everywhere in the building. he was either playing with a toy that his mother crafted and gifted to him or looking for his mother. spider never stayed still meanwhile everyone was chasing after him for the sake of his safety to not suffer the rath of ingyen since she goes hunting for herself or has duties to help olo'eyktan.
he began talking- well only small words that his mother helped him to pronounce like the first time he called her sa'nok. ingyen started to cry, hugging her little boy close to reassure that she is his mother. she tossed her little son in air only minimal to not hurt him. his adorable giggles and smile when he looks at his mom.
norm and max have wanted to keep it a surprise but with spider's birthday coming up, they couldn't so it was a early gift and gave it to her.
as she was still confused about their traditions, she accepted it and opened it and inside was a miniature oxygen mask.
her confusion went towards the scientists when they explained how she wanted to show him the way of the people's way and how can she without taking her son in his new mask. her bewilderment a sight to see filled their day, she immediately grabbed her boy to test it out.
holding the delicate device she soothes her seykxel, "ma wey ma'itan. ma wey. oe mong."
be calm my son. be calm. trust me.
spider was a little fussy but cooperated with her by the reassurance on her face and breathes. norm suggests testing it by stepping a little outside the lab to see how it was working.
their first steps outside were cautiously nerve-racking because there is no telling what could happen if a few seconds late, spider would suffocate.
he was doing well, cooing as he watches the nature for the first time outside other than a window. the rich colors illuminating above them, he reaches towards the sky at feeling the warmth of his mother's embrace and sun.
her smile told them he was going to be raised well even if he lived somewhere close.
five year old spider
both successfully moved near the tribe where they'll be close so she can teach her son how to hold an arrow for the time, pick which fruits are good nutrition for him, make his own blade. the way of the na'vi.
first was how their days together would be like. in the mornings was to organize their home in a way it'll be easy for spider to reach certain things. the first topic is talking to her baby about his mask staying on his face at all times and when he checks how it runs out of air and that he should carry an extra set when out to explore or with the sully's.
she taught him how norm and max showed her in working the contraption. by taking it slow, she takes him on new adventures he only saw in books and the stories his mother tells. the river near their home, different creatures of a variety of color, herbs in cases of emergencies, practices of prayers and many more.
ingyen saw how the environment looked at seykxel so she helps her son look na'vi. she made blue paint out of spartan-fruit to draw stripes to mimick and showed him what it will be used, explaining how eywa chose him. brought him into her life upon a dark age as her child and took on the role to become a faithful and loving mother as much as she can.
after finishing displaying his stripes onto his little body, spider excitedly jumps around the kelku repeatedly telling her that he looks like her. she instantly smiles with her heart full of love and admiration over her boy. she playfully attacks and growls at her son pretending fighting off a strong beast to protect his people as the great omatikayan warrior.
at this point she introduced spider to jake's and neytiri's children. neteyam, kiri, and lo'ak. despite her sister's scowls and displays of dislike towards her son, she knew eywa accepted this child as omatikaya and she will respect it.
all children were curious how they're going to play when three of them are taller than spider but he just pounces onto them not caring of the height differences. poor ingyen gets frighten whenever he climbed a tree, tugs a tail or ends up being splashed into the water where the kids were playing.
but with patience and trust, she knew her son had to withstand any kind of obstacle he may endure.
his physic for a child improves by time when he trust his body into the environment where he was born on. it helps him improve more and build the strength over time.
spider has shown ingyen that she is a mother to an active child.
ten year old spider
spider definitely grew tall at his age as to what norm states because normally kids on earth were still the same height until a certain age. his mask was still in perfect conditions when the scientist make modifications to it so he'll be comfortable and be able to last longer along with spare batteries in emergencies. his na'vi improved drastically when he communicates within the clan when he needed herbs, an extra set of arrows, or just looking for his mother.
this kid definitely began adventuring out in the forest with the sully kids on finding their own treasures and be children. but one time spider slipped from a steep hill that prevented him from climbing back up. as any child would, he panicked but he remained calm when his mother taught him survival skills in any case of dangers he will encounter.
spider would tell one of the sully kids to stay with him not to close to the edge while the other two search for their parents. he looked over his body if he had any scratches or a possible wound and potential creatures that can hurt him and got out his tools that his mother gifted him for his safety.
it began to become dark as eclipse rose upon the sky he heard his name. "seykxel! where are you 'itan!?" when the two sully kids got home, they separated to find each parent. jake sent out a search party for them as for neytiri immediately got up to get kiri. lo'ak tried his best telling his auntie ingyen the details on how it happened when he saw her weaving material, she quickly picked up her nephew and started calling her pa'li to go rescue her son.
her anguish cries heard through the forest then catches a glimpse of kiri looking down. she got off with lo'ak calling out to her and she points down where spider fell.
ingyen peeks down seeing seykxel hugging his legs close, she yells, "ma'itan! i'm here! sa'nok is here!" at the right time jake sully and other clan men arrived at the accident with a rope to rescue the boy. seeing in the state that she is in, jake took it upon himself in tying it around himself to go down.
the olo'eyktan instructed the others on how his plan was gonna be so it'd go smoothly without a problem of where the kid sat wouldn't break.
it was a steady and risky mission until jake and spider successful made it, spider limps fast into his mother's arms where she sobbed in thanks of her son's safety. "thank you great mother for protecting my son. thank you olo'eyktan!" her weeps moved the people on how protective and attached she is to her child.
ingyen felt cautious where her son goes after that but she's aware that seykxel is tough like a real navi and in his coming age, he will become a great warrior.
fifteen year old spider
"ma sa'nok i know how my blade works, i have been taught by the best." he states proudly showing his mother his sharpened weapon.
ingyen, who was cutting the meat and fruits for their separate dinner of her and her mother, who wanted to make a visit, and her son's. seeing the displayed weapon in front of her, she hums knowing the skills and wits of her child influenced her to know he'll become a strong navi warrior in the future. she never doubted the man he'll become.
his growth was different since he is taller and more broader for a fifteen year old boy. the humans think it would be luck from the genetics of his deceased father but ingyen declines to re correct them that it is the works of her raising him in his physic from training, in daily physical activities and the right nutrients of her child.
as she prepares the last bit of their meals she looks at her son waving the blade around, "i'm making sure because if there are kids in the clan out casting you in a disrespectful manner, i will personally send them back to eywa and sort it out with her or i will-!" he stops his mother from rambling on promising anyone regret making her son feel unwelcomed. the kids among the omatikaya seen spider strangely and chose not to involve themselves with them which resulted in becoming rude towards him.
spider stares at his mother knowing she would do it but remembers a funny memory, "i remember when a na'vi man came to court you but you declined because he questioned about me and you scared him off. now he greets me everyday without approaching you- ouch! sa'nok?!" ingyen flicks her son's forehead slightly with her strong finger at him.
she pouts at the memory and sighs, "i just do not want a mate who is a stupid child thinking highly of themselves from my son and who won't love and cherish you as i do. see you. you deserve a sempul who will teach you new hunting skills and lead you on the right path. to be your father." this is what she says everytime.
spider has these talks with his mom about her and him is nothing but love because he is her child and none will change that. her love for him shouldn't be questioned when he was chosen by eywa and she accepted him as omatikaya and a son.
ingyen faces in front of her son, grabbing each side of his face, creasing his cheeks, "ma'itan. you are very important to me to simply mate with someone who doesn't see what i see in front of me. who i raised. you and me have been through and will continue. we stick together. we're fine on our own."
spider sheds a tear smiling at her reassurance and the love of a loving mother that'll do anything to make her child be apart of something.
he is proud being raised by her as his mother and he will make her proud.
they all began dinner when his grandmother arrived from her late duties to talk about their day and stories.
night time has fallen when the ground began to shaken the kelkus around the clan. the echos and whispers of the omatikayans awoken ingyen which she told her mother to stay with seykxel.
since jake sully and neytiri were on their date night, she took upon herself to investigate the problem. calling her ikran she began the search.
the noise began to become clear when she saw fire up ahead and a light came above. there were falling stars.
falling stars from the sky.
it could mean only one thing..
the sky demons have returned.
she searched the environment where animals were fleeing their homes and the demon ships destroying the forest, the home of many innocent creatures.
she wails upon the destruction and memories flooded back of the events from fifteen years ago. she began to return to the clan to warn the olo'eyktan and her people.
the closer she got, she saw jake sully and neytiri who was crying, barely landed, announcing to the omatikayans the threats has returned and they don't know what they brought back with them from earth.
her anger seethed her entire body and her eyes soften upon her son waking from the news he has heard.
seykxel appears afraid and confused about the bad sky people returning to their home with their terrorizing actions from the stories he heard.
ingyen promises to defend her homeland. to keep her home alive and well where seykxel can grow to become a fine, strong omatikayan warrior. where he can live his entire life and pass onto the ancestors without a tragic reoccurring again.
to protect her son from the rda, the sky demons.
for seykxel.
- - ┈┈∘┈˃̶༒˂̶┈∘┈┈ - -
at the arrival of the rda, they've brought more danger to what happened before. more weapons, more machines, and more fear. they are so determine to submit the navi their home and resources because of their greediness. take over that was their home forever.
but they have new recruits being shipped to pandora in hopes of building their strength back at the navis.
new recruits.
recombinants they call them. with the memories of their predecessors who've fought and died in the battle of the hallelujah mountains have returned.
one was none other than.. colonel miles quaritch.

Name: Up to Player Species:  Fury, Kitsune, Siren, Selkie, Balam Occupation: Veterinarian  Age: 25+ Years Old Played By: OPEN Suggested Face Claims: Lisa Edelstein, Gemma Chan, Olivia Munn, Ryan Reynolds, Zoe Saldana
“Quote up to player.”
Plenty of people love animals and care for them. You’re one of those people, even more so than most. You became a veterinarian to try and help out as many creatures as you could, supernatural or otherwise. You did everything you could and then some, but sometimes pets would come in that couldn't be saved. Sometimes it was an accident or a cruel twist of fate, but sometimes, more often than you liked, it was at the hands of humans. The rage you feel towards those vile people can't be contained. So you take matters into your own hands, making them feel the pain they inflict on animals so they learn their lesson. But the more you see, the more your rage spills over to the rest of humanity, and soon you may start taking preventative action rather than simply enacting vengeance.
